Abstract In the United States, Mormons have been shown to have lower incidence and mortality rates of cancer and other diseases than the general population, a fact which has been attributed to the life style prescribed by the Mormon Church, including abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and tea. This study examines Mormon cause‐specific mortality rates in Alberta, Canada, compared to rates for the general population of Alberta and of all Canada. Mormon death rates for most causes were lower than those for Alberta, which are themselves lower than Canadian rates. Mormon death rates for males were higher than for females for most causes, but male and female death rates were more similar among Mormons than in the general population. Causes of death for which Mormons have an average or higher than average risk are either less frequent causes or are less clearly related to dietary habits. Mormons have disproportionately low death rates for many causes which are not clearly related to the use of tobacco, alcohol, coffee, or tea. Further research is needed on the specific effects of different life‐style components and on the possible biological selectivity of the group. 相似文献

Early theories of aging suggested that organisms with relatively high metabolic rates would live shorter lives. Despite widespread tests of this 'rate of living' theory of aging, there is little empirical evidence to support the idea. A more fine-grained approach that examined age-related changes in metabolic rate over the life span could provide valuable insight into the relationship between metabolic rate and aging. Here we compare age-related metabolic rate (measured as CO2 production per hour) and age-related mortality rate among five species in the genus Drosophila. We find no evidence that longer-lived species have lower metabolic rates. In all five species, there is no clear evidence of an age-related metabolic decline. Metabolic rates are strikingly constant throughout the life course, with the exception of females of D. hydei, in which metabolic rates show an increase over the first third of the life span and then decline. We argue that some physiological traits may have been shaped by such strong selection over evolutionary time that they are relatively resistant to the decline in the force of selection that occurs within the life time of a single individual. We suggest that comparisons of specific traits that do not show signs of aging with those traits that do decline with age could provide insight into the aging process. 相似文献

Dynamics and responses to mortality rates of competing predators undergoing predator-prey cycles 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two or more competing predators can coexist using a single homogeneous prey species if the system containing all three undergoes internally generated fluctuations in density. However, the dynamics of species that coexist via this mechanism have not been extensively explored. Here, we examine both the nature of the dynamics and the responses of the mean densities of each predator to mortality imposed upon it or its competitor. The analysis of dynamics uncovers several previously undescribed behaviors for this model, including chaotic fluctuations, and long-term transients that differ significantly from the ultimate patterns of fluctuations. The limiting dynamics of the system can be loosely classified as synchronous cycles, asynchronous cycles, and chaotic dynamics. Synchronous cycles are simple limit cycles with highly positively correlated densities of the two predator species. Asynchronous cycles are limit cycles, frequently of complex form, including a significant period during which prey density is nearly constant while one predator gradually, monotonically replaces the other. Chaotic dynamics are aperiodic and generally have intermediate correlations between predator densities. Continuous changes in density-independent mortality rates often lead to abrupt transitions in mean population sizes, and increases in the mortality rate of one predator may decrease the population size of the competing predator. Similarly, increases in the immigration rate of one predator may decrease its own density and increase the density of the other predator. Proportional changes in one predator's birth and death rate functions can have significant effects on the dynamics and mean densities of both predator species. All of these responses to environmental change differ from those observed when competitors coexist stably as the result of resource (prey) partitioning. The patterns described here occur in many other competition models in which there are cycles and differences in the linearity of the responses of consumers to their resources. 相似文献
