Valgus bending and shearing of the knee have been identified as primary mechanisms of injuries in a lateral loading environment applicable to pedestrian-car collisions. Previous studies have reported on the structural response of the knee joint to pure valgus bending and lateral shearing, as well as the estimated injury thresholds for the knee bending angle and shear displacement based on experimental tests. However, epidemiological studies indicate that most knee injuries are due to the combined effects of bending and shear loading. Therefore, characterization of knee stiffness for combined loading and the associated injury tolerances is necessary for developing vehicle countermeasures to mitigate pedestrian injuries. Isolated knee joint specimens (n=40) from postmortem human subjects were tested in valgus bending at a loading rate representative of a pedestrian-car impact. The effect of lateral shear force combined with the bending moment on the stiffness response and the injury tolerances of the knee was concurrently evaluated. In addition to the knee moment-angle response, the bending angle and shear displacement corresponding to the first instance of primary ligament failure were determined in each test. The failure displacements were subsequently used to estimate an injury threshold function based on a simplified analytical model of the knee. The validity of the determined injury threshold function was subsequently verified using a finite element model. Post-test necropsy of the knees indicated medial collateral ligament injury consistent with the clinical injuries observed in pedestrian victims. The moment-angle response in valgus bending was determined at quasistatic and dynamic loading rates and compared to previously published test data. The peak bending moment values scaled to an average adult male showed no significant change with variation in the superimposed shear load. An injury threshold function for the knee in terms of bending angle and shear displacement was determined by performing regression analysis on the experimental data. The threshold values of the bending angle (16.2 deg) and shear displacement (25.2 mm) estimated from the injury threshold function were in agreement with previously published knee injury threshold data. The continuous knee injury function expressed in terms of bending angle and shear displacement enabled injury prediction for combined loading conditions such as those observed in pedestrian-car collisions.  相似文献

Detailed cervical spine models are necessary to better understand cervical spine response to loading, improve our understanding of injury mechanisms, and specifically for predicting occupant response and injury in auto crash scenarios. The focus of this study was to develop a C4–C5 finite element model with accurate representations of each tissue within the segment. This model incorporates more than double the number of elements of existing models, required for accurate prediction of response. The most advanced material data available were then incorporated using appropriate nonlinear constitutive models to provide accurate predictions of response at physiological levels of loading. This tissue-scale segment model was validated against a wide variety of experimental data including different modes of loading (axial rotation, flexion, extension, lateral bending, and translation), and different load levels. In general, the predicted response of the model was within the single standard deviation response corridors for both low and high load levels. Importantly, this model demonstrates that appropriate refinement of the finite element mesh, representation at the tissue level, and sufficiently detailed material properties and constitutive models provide excellent response predictions without calibration of the model to experimental data. Load sharing between the disc, ligaments, and facet joints was investigated for various modes of loading, and the dominant load-bearing structure was found to correlate with typical anatomical injury sites for these modes of loading. The C4–C5 model forms the basis for the development of a full cervical spine model. Future studies will focus on tissue-level injury prediction and dynamic response.  相似文献

How animals cope with increases in body size is a key issue in biology. Here, we consider scaling of xenarthrans, particularly how femoral form and function varies to accommodate the size range between the 3 kg armadillo and its giant relative the 300 kg glyptodont. It has already been noted that femoral morphology differs between these animals and suggested that this reflects a novel adaptation to size increase in glyptodont. We test this idea by applying a finite element analysis of coronal plane forces to femoral models of these animals, simulating the stance phase in the hind limb; where the femur is subject to bending owing to longitudinal compressive as well as abduction loads on the greater trochanter. We use these models to examine the hypothesis that muscles attaching on the third trochanter (T3) can reduce this bending in the loaded femur and that the T3 forces are more effective at reducing bending in glyptodont where the T3 is situated at the level of the knee. The analysis uses traditional finite element methods to produce strain maps and examine strains at 200 points on the femur. The coordinates of these points before and after loading are also used to carry out geometric morphometric (GM) analyses of the gross deformation of the model in different loading scenarios. The results show that longitudinal compressive and abductor muscle loading increases bending in the coronal plane, and that loads applied to the T3 reduce that bending. In the glyptodont model, the T3 loads are more effective and can more readily compensate for the bending owing to longitudinal and abductor loads. This study also demonstrates the usefulness of GM methods in interpreting the results of finite element analyses.  相似文献

Clavicle injuries were frequently observed in automotive side and frontal crashes. Finite element (FE) models have been developed to understand the injury mechanism, although no clavicle loading response corridors yet exist in the literature to ensure the model response biofidelity. Moreover, the typically developed structural level (e.g., force–deflection) response corridors were shown to be insufficient for verifying the injury prediction capacity of FE model, which usually is based on strain related injury criteria. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop both the structural (force vs deflection) and material level (strain vs force) clavicle response corridors for validating FE models for injury risk modeling. 20 Clavicles were loaded to failure under loading conditions representative of side and frontal crashes respectively, half of which in axial compression, and the other half in three point bending. Both structural and material response corridors were developed for each loading condition. FE model that can accurately predict structural response and strain level provides a more useful tool in injury risk modeling and prediction. The corridor development method in this study could also be extended to develop corridors for other components of the human body.  相似文献

Large variations in axial ulnar load strain calibration results suggest that animal-specific calibrations may be necessary. However, the optimal set of geometric measures for performing an animal-specific calibration are not known, potentially as a result of confounding effects associated with experimentally introduced variation. The purpose of this study was to characterize the inherent variability of ulnar geometric measures known to influence periosteal midshaft strain during axial ulnar exogenous loading, and to further quantify the relationship between the variance of those geometric measures and periosteal strain during axial loading. Thirty-nine right mouse forelimbs were scanned with microCT. Seven geometric measures that influence periosteal strain resulting from a combined axial and bending loading were computed and used to estimate animal-specific strains on the periosteal midshaft. Animal specific strains were estimated using a theoretical model based on the generalized flexure formula. The predicted mean and standard deviation of the simulated midshaft strain gauge measurement resulting from the inter-animal geometric differences was −985±148 με/N. The complete beam bending term associated with bending about the Imin axis accounted for 89% of the variance and reduced the residual RMSE to 50.4 με. Eccentricity associated with the axial loading contributed a substantial portion of variation to the computed strain suggesting that calibration procedures to account for animal differences should incorporate that variable. The method developed in this study provides a relatively simple procedure for computing animal-specific strains using microCT scan data, without the need of a load/strain calibration study or computationally intensive finite element models.  相似文献

Hip loading affects the development of hip osteoarthritis, bone remodelling and osseointegration of implants. In this study, we analyzed the effect of subject-specific modelling of hip geometry and hip joint centre (HJC) location on the quantification of hip joint moments, muscle moments and hip contact forces during gait, using musculoskeletal modelling, inverse dynamic analysis and static optimization. For 10 subjects, hip joint moments, muscle moments and hip loading in terms of magnitude and orientation were quantified using three different model types, each including a different amount of subject-specific detail: (1) a generic scaled musculoskeletal model, (2) a generic scaled musculoskeletal model with subject-specific hip geometry (femoral anteversion, neck-length and neck-shaft angle) and (3) a generic scaled musculoskeletal model with subject-specific hip geometry including HJC location. Subject-specific geometry and HJC location were derived from CT. Significant differences were found between the three model types in HJC location, hip flexion–extension moment and inclination angle of the total contact force in the frontal plane. No model agreement was found between the three model types for the calculation of contact forces in terms of magnitude and orientations, and muscle moments. Therefore, we suggest that personalized models with individualized hip joint geometry and HJC location should be used for the quantification of hip loading. For biomechanical analyses aiming to understand modified hip joint loading, and planning hip surgery in patients with osteoarthritis, the amount of subject-specific detail, related to bone geometry and joint centre location in the musculoskeletal models used, needs to be considered.  相似文献

Subject-specific musculoskeletal models are essential to biomedical research and clinical applications, such as customized joint replacement, computer-aided surgical planning, gait analysis and automated segmentation. Generating these models from CT or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is time and resource intensive, requiring special skills. Therefore, in many studies individual bone models are approximated by scaling a generic template. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to determine a set of clinically available parameters (palpable measures and demographic data) that could improve the prediction of femoral dimensions, as compared to predicting these variables using uniform scaling based on palpable length. Similar to previous non-homogenous anthropometric scaling methods, the non-homogenous scaling method proposed in this study improved the prediction over uniform scaling of five key femoral measures. Homogenous scaling forces all dimensions of an object to be scaled equally, whereas non-homogenous scaling allows the dimensions to be scaled independently. The largest improvement was in femoral depth, where the coefficient of determination (r2) improved from 0.22 (homogenous) to 0.60 (non-homogeneous). In general, the major advantage of this non-homogenous scaling method is its ability to support the accurate and rapid generation of subject-specific femoral models since all parameters can be collected clinically, without imaging or invasive methods.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the force-time and force-displacement response of the human mandible under direct loading at the chin. Sub-fracture response of the mandible and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) were analyzed from 10 cadavers that were impacted at the chin with a 2.8-kg mass at drop heights of 300, 400 and 500 mm and a 5.2-kg mass at 500 mm. Motion of radio-opaque markers adhered to the surface of the bone was recorded at 1000 Hz by a bi-planar X-ray and converted to three-dimensional coordinates. Peak force ranged from 0.90 to 4.54 kN causing chin displacement of 1.2-4.4 mm. A bi-linear response was observed with stiffness of 475.1+/-199.8 kN/m for chin displacement resulting from loading up to 0.6 kN and 2381.6+/-495.7 kN/m for loads from 0.6 to 3.25 kN. This defines the biomechanical response of the mandible for chin motion under impact loading. The response of different segments of the mandible and TMJ are also documented. Force-time and force-displacement response corridors for the mandible can be used for finite element model and/or the development and validation of a biomechanical surrogate.  相似文献

Patient specific quantitative CT (QCT) imaging data together with the finite element (FE) method may provide an accurate prediction of a patient's femoral strength and fracture risk. Although numerous FE models investigating femoral fracture strength have been published, there is little consent on the effect of boundary conditions, dynamic loading and hydraulic strengthening due to intra-medullary pressure on the predicted fracture strength. We developed a QCT-derived FE model of a proximal femur that included node-specific modulus assigned based on the local bone density. The effect of three commonly used boundary conditions published in literature were investigated by comparing the resulting strain field due to an applied fracture load. The models were also augmented with viscoelastic material properties and subject to a realistic impact load profile to determine the effect of dynamic loads on the strain field. Finally, the effect of hydraulic strengthening was investigated by including node specific permeability and performing a coupled pore diffusion and stress analysis of the FE model. Results showed that all boundary conditions yield the same strain field patterns, but peak strains were 22% lower and fracture load was 18% higher when loaded at the greater trochanter than when loaded at the femoral head. Comparison of the dynamic models showed that material viscoelasticity was important, but inertial effects (vibration and shock) were not. Finally, pore pressure changes did not cause significant hydraulic strengthening of bone under fall impact loading.  相似文献

Rib fracture is one of the most common thoracic injuries in vehicle traffic accidents that can result in fatalities associated with seriously injured internal organs. A failure model is critical when modelling rib fracture to predict such injuries. Different rib failure models have been proposed in prediction of thorax injuries. However, the biofidelity of the fracture failure models when varying the loading conditions and the effects of a rib fracture failure model on prediction of thoracic injuries have been studied only to a limited extent. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of three rib failure models on prediction of thoracic injuries using a previously validated finite element model of the human thorax. The performance and biofidelity of each rib failure model were first evaluated by modelling rib responses to different loading conditions in two experimental configurations: (1) the three-point bending on the specimen taken from rib and (2) the anterior–posterior dynamic loading to an entire bony part of the rib. Furthermore, the simulation of the rib failure behaviour in the frontal impact to an entire thorax was conducted at varying velocities and the effects of the failure models were analysed with respect to the severity of rib cage damages. Simulation results demonstrated that the responses of the thorax model are similar to the general trends of the rib fracture responses reported in the experimental literature. However, they also indicated that the accuracy of the rib fracture prediction using a given failure model varies for different loading conditions.  相似文献

Variations in yield strains for trabecular bone within a specific anatomic site are only a small fraction of the substantial variations that exist for elastic modulus and strength, and yet the source of this uniformity is not known. Our goal was to investigate the underlying mechanisms by using high-resolution, materially nonlinear finite element models of 12 human femoral neck trabecular bone specimens. The finite element models, used to obtain apparent yield strains in both tension and compression, assumed that the tissue-level yield strains were the same across all specimens. Comparison of the model predictions with the experimental data therefore enabled us to isolate the combined roles of volume fraction and architecture from the role of tissue material properties. Results indicated that, for both tensile and compressive loading, natural variations in volume fraction and architecture produced a negligible coefficient of variation (less than 3%) in apparent yield strains. Analysis of tissue-level strains showed that while bending of individual trabeculae played only a minor role in the apparent elastic behavior, the combined effects of this bending and tissue-level strength asymmetry produced apparent-level failure strains in compression that were 14% lower than those at the tissue level. By contrast, tissue and apparent-level yield strains were equivalent for tensile loading. We conclude that the uniformity of apparent yield strains is primarily the result of the highly oriented architecture that minimizes bending. Most of the variation that does occur is the result of the non-uniformity of the tissue-level yield strains.  相似文献

Contiguous high resolution computed tomography images were obtained at a 1.5 mm slice thickness perpendicular to the neck axis from the base of the femoral head to the trochanteric line in a sample of 10 specimens each of Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, and Gorilla gorilla, plus five specimens of Pan paniscus. Superior, inferior, anterior, and posterior cortical thicknesses were automatically measured directly from these digital images. Throughout the femoral neck H. sapiens displays thin superior cortical bone and inferior cortical bone that thickens distally. In marked contrast, cortical bone in the femoral neck of African apes is more uniformly thick in all directions, with even greater thickening of the superior cortical bone distally. Because the femoral neck acts as a cantilevered beam, its anchorage at the neck-shaft junction is subjected to the highest bending stresses and is the most biomechanically relevant region to inspect for response to strain. As evinced by A.L. 128-1, A.L. 211-1 and MAK-VP-1/1, Australopithecus afarensis is indistinguishable from H. sapiens, but markedly different from African apes in cortical bone distribution at the femoral neck-shaft junction. Cortical distribution in the African ape indicates much greater variation in loading conditions consistent with their more varied locomotor repertoire. Cortical distribution in hominids is a response to the more stereotypic loading pattern imposed by habitual bipedality, and thin superior cortex in A. afarensis confirms the absence of a significant arboreal component in its locomotor repertoire. Understanding how the skull transmits and dissipates forces during feeding provides insights into the selective pressures that may have driven the evolution of primate skull morphology. Traditionally, researchers have interpreted masticatory biomechanics in terms of simple global loading regimes applied to simple shapes (i.e., bending in sagittal and frontal planes, dorsoventral shear, and torsion of beams and cylinders). This study uses finite element analysis to examine the extent to which these geometric models provide accurate strain predictions in the face and evaluate whether simple global loading regimes predict strains that approximate the craniofacial deformation pattern observed during mastication. Loading regimes, including those simulating peak loads during molar chewing and those approximating the global loading regimes, were applied to a previously validated finite element model (FEM) of a macaque (Macaca fascicularis) skull, and the resulting strain patterns were compared. When simple global loading regimes are applied to the FEM, the resulting strains do not match those predicted by simple geometric models, suggesting that these models fail to generate accurate predictions of facial strain. Of the four loading regimes tested, bending in the frontal plane most closely approximates strain patterns in the circumorbital region and lateral face, apparently due to masseter muscle forces acting on the zygomatic arches. However, these results indicate that no single simple global loading regime satisfactorily accounts for the strain pattern found in the validated FEM. Instead, we propose that FE models replace simple cranial models when interpreting bone strain data and formulating hypotheses about craniofacial biomechanics.  相似文献

The modal analysis of a human tibia consisted of characterizing its dynamic behavior by determining natural frequency, damping ratio and mode shapes. Two methods were used to perform the modal analysis: (1) a finite element method (structural model); (2) an experimental modal analysis (modal model). The experimental modal model was used to optimize the structural model. After optimization, differences in results between the two models were found to be due only to mechanical properties and mass distribution. The influences of boundary conditions and geometric properties (such as inertia and length) were eliminated by the finite element model itself. The percent relative error between the two methods was approximately 3%, corresponding to the standard deviation of the measured frequencies. For the frequency range considered, the mode shapes were bending modes in two different vibration planes (latero-medial and sagittal), with a slight torsion effect due to the twisted geometry of the tibia.  相似文献

Interpatient variability is often overlooked in orthopaedic computational studies due to the substantial challenges involved in sourcing and generating large numbers of bone models. A statistical model of the whole femur incorporating both geometric and material property variation was developed as a potential solution to this problem. The statistical model was constructed using principal component analysis, applied to 21 individual computer tomography scans. To test the ability of the statistical model to generate realistic, unique, finite element (FE) femur models it was used as a source of 1000 femurs to drive a study on femoral neck fracture risk. The study simulated the impact of an oblique fall to the side, a scenario known to account for a large proportion of hip fractures in the elderly and have a lower fracture load than alternative loading approaches. FE model generation, application of subject specific loading and boundary conditions, FE processing and post processing of the solutions were completed automatically. The generated models were within the bounds of the training data used to create the statistical model with a high mesh quality, able to be used directly by the FE solver without remeshing. The results indicated that 28 of the 1000 femurs were at highest risk of fracture. Closer analysis revealed the percentage of cortical bone in the proximal femur to be a crucial differentiator between the failed and non-failed groups. The likely fracture location was indicated to be intertrochantic. Comparison to previous computational, clinical and experimental work revealed support for these findings.  相似文献

Hip replacement constructs are paradigms of uncertain systems, and as such are suited to the application of probabilistic methods to assess their structural integrity. In order to gain confidence in a probabilistic model, it would be useful to verify the findings with experimental data; however, this is difficult to achieve in practice because of the exhaustive number of parameter combinations that need to be tested. As an alternative to experimental testing, benchmarking can be carried out provided a known analytical solution is available. To this end, a simplified 2D two-beam model of the femoral part of a total hip replacement construct was utilised to analyse uncertainties and variability in the construct as it is subjected to load. The use of a simplified model enabled geometric parameters to be investigated; these are commonly not considered in probabilistic models due to the increased complexity involved. Analytical and finite element representations of the model were developed and compared. The probabilistic study used the Monte Carlo simulation technique and the first-order reliability method to look at the inducible displacement of a hip implant, a phenomenon that has been linked to the most common cause of hip implant failure, aseptic loosening. Excellent correlation was observed between the analytical and probabilistic solutions, and it was shown that probabilistic approaches could efficiently predict the response of the simplified beam model while readily identifying the parameters most likely to compromise the structural integrity of the construct.  相似文献

Both genetic and environmental factors are known to influence the structure of bone, contributing to its mechanical behavior during, and adaptive response to, loading. We introduce a novel approach to simultaneously address the genetically mediated, exercise-related effects on bone morphometrics and strength, using mice that had been selectively bred for high levels of voluntary wheel running (16 generations). Female mice from high running and control lines were either allowed (n=12, 12, respectively) or denied (n=11, 12, respectively) access to wheels for 20 months. Femoral shaft, neck, and head were measured with calipers and via micro-computed tomography. Fracture characteristics of the femoral head were assessed in cantilever bending. After adjusting for variation in body mass by two-way analysis of covariance, distal width of the femur increased as a result of selective breeding, and mediolateral femoral diameter was reduced by wheel access. Cross-sectional area of the femoral mid-shaft showed a significant linetype x activity effect, increasing with wheel access in high-running lines but decreasing in control lines. Body mass was significantly positively correlated with many of the morphometric traits studied. Fracture load of the femoral neck was strongly positively predicted by morphometric traits of the femoral neck (r2>0.30), but no significant effects of selective breeding or wheel access were found. The significant correlations of body mass with femoral morphometric traits underscore the importance of controlling for body size when analyzing the response of bone size and shape to experimental treatments. After controlling for body mass, measures of the femoral neck remain significant predictors of femoral neck strength.  相似文献

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a common cause of back pain, and attempts to develop therapies are frustrated by lack of model systems that mimic the human condition. Human IVD organ culture models can address this gap, yet current models are limited since vertebral endplates are removed to maintain cell viability, physiological loading is not applied, and mechanical behaviors are not measured. This study aimed to (i) establish a method for isolating human IVDs from autopsy with intact vertebral endplates, and (ii) develop and validate an organ culture loading system for human or bovine IVDs. Human IVDs with intact endplates were isolated from cadavers within 48 h of death and cultured for up to 21 days. IVDs remained viable with ~80% cell viability in nucleus and annulus regions. A dynamic loading system was designed and built with the capacity to culture 9 bovine or 6 human IVDs simultaneously while applying simulated physiologic loads (maximum force: 4 kN) and measuring IVD mechanical behaviors. The loading system accurately applied dynamic loading regimes (RMS error <2.5 N and total harmonic distortion <2.45%), and precisely evaluated mechanical behavior of rubber and bovine IVDs. Bovine IVDs maintained their mechanical behavior and retained >85% viable cells throughout the 3 week culture period. This organ culture loading system can closely mimic physiological conditions and be used to investigate response of living human and bovine IVDs to mechanical and chemical challenges and to screen therapeutic repair techniques.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop and validate a finite element (FE) model of a human clavicle which can predict the structural response and bone fractures under both axial compression and anterior–posterior three-point bending loads. Quasi-static non-injurious axial compression and three-point bending tests were first conducted on a male clavicle followed by a dynamic three-point bending test to fracture. Then, two types of FE models of the clavicle were developed using bone material properties which were set to vary with the computed tomography image density of the bone. A volumetric solid FE model comprised solely of hexahedral elements was first developed. A solid-shell FE model was then created which modelled the trabecular bone as hexahedral elements and the cortical bone as quadrilateral shell elements. Finally, simulations were carried out using these models to evaluate the influence of variations in cortical thickness, mesh density, bone material properties and modelling approach on the biomechanical responses of the clavicle, compared with experimental data. The FE results indicate that the inclusion of density-based bone material properties can provide a more accurate reproduction of the force–displacement response and bone fracture timing than a model with uniform bone material properties. Inclusion of a variable cortical thickness distribution also slightly improves the ability of the model to predict the experimental response. The methods developed in this study will be useful for creating subject-specific FE models to better understand the biomechanics and injury mechanism of the clavicle.  相似文献
