1. The main focus of this study was to investigate the effects of single and multiple moderate doses of lime (slaked lime, Ca(OH)2, and/or calcite, CaCO3) on eutrophic hardwater lakes. This information would contribute to strategies to manage phytoplankton and macrophyte biomass in eutrophic lakes.
2. Water chemistry and biota were monitored for up to 7 years after initial lime treatment and results were compared with reference systems.
3. Complementary studies investigated the effect of lime on macrophytes in ponds, irrigation canals and microcosm experiments.
4. When water pH was kept within its natural range (≤ 10), single and multiple lime applications to lakes and ponds controlled macrophyte biomass, without negatively affecting invertebrate communities.
5. Single lime treatments at moderate dosages of lakes and ponds resulted in variable and mostly temporary changes in chlorophyll a (chl a ) and phosphorus (P) concentration. Although sediment P release was reduced in single-dose lakes during the first winter following treatment, reductions appeared temporary.
6. Multiple treatments of lakes and ponds were effective at reducing both chl a and P concentrations over longer periods. Mean winter P release rate was also reduced after initial treatment.
7. In laboratory studies, sediment cores were incubated with eight different treatments to assess P release. Redox-sensitive treatments were no more effective at lowering total P concentration in overlying water than some redox-insensitive treatments. Lime reduced total P concentrations, but was not as effective as treatments with alum.
8. The use of lime in managing macrophyte and phytoplankton biomass in shallow, hardwater lakes and ponds may be preferable over other treatments, because lime is economical and non-toxic as long as pH is kept within a natural range.  相似文献

1. Two hardwater eutrophic lakes of central Alberta were subjected to single doses of Ca(OH)2 (74 or 107 mg L–1). The effects of lime treatment on phosphorus (P) precipitation, sediment P release, and macrophyte biomass were assessed for up to 2 years.
2. In both lakes, sediment P release was reduced to 16 and 27%, respectively, of pre-treatment values by the first winter following treatment. However, sediment P release returned to pre-treatment values during the following year.
3. In contrast to these short-term effects, macrophyte biomass decreased by as much as 80% after lime application and remained there for at least 2 years.
4. Our results indicate that a single dose of Ca(OH)2 may give short-term (< 1 year) control of P and long-term control (> 1 year) of macrophytes in hardwater eutrophic lakes of Alberta.  相似文献

1. Whole-lake experiments were conducted in two hardwater lakes (Halfmoon and Figure Eight) in Alberta, Canada, to investigate the effectiveness of repeated lime (slaked lime: Ca(OH)2 and/or calcite: CaCO3) treatments (5–78 mg L–1) for up to 7 years.
2. Randomized intervention analysis of intersystem differences between the experimental and three reference lakes demonstrated a decline in euphotic total phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations in the experimental lakes after repeated lime treatments.
3. After the second lime application to Halfmoon Lake, mean winter total phosphorus release rates (TPRR) decreased to < 1 mg m–2 day–1 compared with 3.6 mg m–2 day–1 during the winter after initial treatment. In the final year of lime application, mean summer TPRR decreased to 4.5 mg m–2 day–1 compared with 7.6 mg m–2 day–1 in the pre-treatment year.
4. Mean macrophyte biomass declined and species composition was altered at 1 and 2 m depths in Figure Eight Lake during lime application. Over the first 6 years of treatment, macrophyte biomass at 2 m declined by 95% compared with concentrations recorded during the initial treatment year. In the last year of the study, macrophyte biomass at 2 m reached initial treatment concentrations, which coincided with the greatest water transparency. Over the treatment period, macrophyte species shifted from floating to rooted plants.
5. Multiple lime applications can improve water quality in eutrophic hardwater lakes for periods of up to 7 years.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Vertical profiles of pH were measured at nine shallow water (<5m) locations in Esthwaite Water. These indicate strong gradients of pH near the sediment water interface suggesting a marked buffering capacity of the sediments.
2. Thirteen littoral sediment cores were horizontally sectioned and sequentially extracted (0.5 M NaHCO3, 0.1 M NaOH, 1 M HCI) and analysed for soluble reactive phosphorus. The core sections were also analysed for total phosphorus and per cent organic content to determine the vertical and areal variability of phosphorus within the littoral sediments of Esthwaite Water.
3. The rate of release of phosphorus from intact sediment cores was measured in the laboratory as a function of the pH of overlying water, yielding the relationship log K=0.54 pH−3.94, K=mg Pm−2day−1. The maximum release rate measured was 75 mg P m−2 day−2 at pH = 10.5.
4. Experiments on sediment slurries indicate that the release of phosphorus at pH 10 is rapid with approximately 50% of the total NaHCO3+ NaOH extractable phosphorus being released within 3 h.
5. Phosphorus release from the littoral sediments may equal or exceed external sources plus hypolimnetic inputs during periods of high pH associated with times of maximum algal biomass.  相似文献

1. The impact of whole-lake lime (slaked lime, Ca(OH)2, and/or calcite, CaCO3) addition on plankton communities was evaluated in eutrophic hardwater lakes on the North American Boreal Plain.
2. Two lakes received a single treatment of lime (Ca(OH)2 at 74 or 107 mg L–1), two lakes received multiple treatments with Ca(OH)2 and/or CaCO3 (5–78 mg L–1), and four lakes were untreated and served as reference systems.
3. Over the long-term (> 1 year), phytoplankton biomass was reduced in multiple-dose lakes, but not in single-dose lakes. Cyanobacteria typically dominated the algal community in the years before, during and after lime treatment in both single- and multiple-dose lakes.

Aims:  To evaluate the impact of modified atmosphere packaging on in vitro growth of Aspergillus carbonarius and Aspergillus niger , and possible effects on ochratoxin A (OTA) biosynthesis.
Methods and Results:  Ochratoxigenic isolates belonging to the species A. carbonarius and A. niger were grown on a synthetic grapejuice medium (SNM) and packaged in combinations of controlled O2 (1% and 5%) and CO2 levels (0% and 15%), and in air as a control. Colony diameters were recorded every 3 days up to 21 days, and OTA was analysed after 7, 14 and 21 days. The greatest reductions in mycelial growth rate were observed at 1% O2 followed by 1% O2/15% CO2, whereas 5% O2 stimulated the growth of all isolates. OTA production by A. carbonarius and A. niger isolates was minimized at 1% O2/15% CO2 and 1% O2, respectively, after 7 days of incubation. Maximal OTA accumulation after 7 days was observed for all isolates in the control pack and at 5% O2.
Conclusions:  Of the atmospheres tested, only 1% O2 combined with 15% CO2 consistently reduced fungal growth and OTA synthesis by A. carbonarius and A. niger .
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Storage under modified atmospheres is unlikely to be suitable as the sole method for OTA minimization and grape preservation; other inhibitory factors are necessary.  相似文献

1. Whitemere, a kettle-hole lake in north-west England (zm,14 m, area 22.5 ha) has extremely high maximal concentrations (around 1 mg L−1) of total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and comparatively low maximal concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (<0.5 mg N L−1). Bioassays indicate that its phytoplankton is nitrogen limited, and it has surface blue-green algal blooms in summer. Palaeoecological investigations have shown that high populations of cyanophytes occurred more than 6000 years ago, even before human settlement of the catchment.
2. The reasons for this combination of features are not immediately clear. This paper attempts to distinguish between two hypotheses: that the high phosphorus concentrations arise from input of phosphate-rich groundwater; and that the high phosphorus concentrations arise from concentration and recycling mechanisms within the lake.
3. The lake is entirely fed by ground water, direct rainfall and surface sheet flow. The concentrations of phosphorus in the ground water are much lower than in the lake water. The lake is stratified and has high phosphorus concentrations in the anaerobic hypolimnion in summer as a result of substantial release from the sediment. Vertical turbulence in the relatively weakly stratified water column may transfer substantial amounts to the epilimnion.There is also substantial phosphorus release from the sediments under the aerobic epilimnion.
4. There is little outflow of water and phosphorus. Most of the phosphorus is returned to the sediment under winter isothermal conditions, to be released again the following summer. The lake has probably maintained these mechanisms for millennia. Recent eutrophication is likely to have been driven by nitrogen inputs from greater intensification of agriculture in the catchment.  相似文献

Aims:  Optimization of medium components for extracellular protease production by Halobacterium sp. SP1(1) using statistical approach.
Methods and Results:  The significant factors influencing the protease production as screened by Plackett–Burman method were identified as soybean flour and FeCl3. Response surface methodology such as central composite design was applied for further optimization studies. The concentrations of medium components for higher protease production as optimized using this approach were (g l−1): NaCl, 250; KCl, 2; MgSO4, 10; tri-Na-citrate, 1·5; soybean flour, 10 and FeCl3, 0·16. This statistical optimization approach led to production of 69·44 ± 0·811 U ml−1 of protease.
Conclusions:  Soybean flour and FeCl3 were identified as important factors controlling the production of extracellular protease by Halobacterium sp. SP1(1). The statistical approach was found to be very effective in optimizing the medium components in manageable number of experimental runs with overall 3·9-fold increase in extracellular protease production.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The present study is the first report on statistical optimization of medium components for production of haloarchaeal protease. The study also explored the possibility of using extracellular protease produced by Halobacterium sp. SP1(1) for various applications like antifouling coatings and fish sauce preparation using cheaper raw material.  相似文献

1. A 1-year intensive study of nutrient flows in Airthrey Loch, central Scotland, a small eutrophic [mean total phosphorus (TP) = 61.1 μg P l–1] well-flushed freshwater body (area, 6.9 ha; mean depth, 1.85 m; volume, 1.274 × 105 m3; retention time, 0.44 yr), was undertaken.
2. The nutrient budget was dominated by large allochthonous P inputs, equivalent to an areal load to the loch of 8.56 kg P ha–1 yr–1, which occurred predominantly during winter. In the summer, when TP inputs were low, water column levels of TP still increased, as a result of aerobic P release from sediments.
3. Sorption experiments indicated potential for sediment P release at water P concentrations of up to 200 μg P l–1.
4. Aerobic release rate of P from sediments to the water column of Airthrey Loch was estimated to be of the order of 1 mg P m–2 day–1, and occurred during periods of elevated water column pH.

SUMMARY. 1. The exchange of phosphorus between the epilimnetic (shallow zone) sediment and water column in Lough Ennell was investigated in laboratory experiments using five intact cores.
2. Variations in water mixing, sediment suspension and aerobic–anaerobic oxygen status in the water column and its effects on sediment phosphorus release rates were determined.
3. Experimental results indicated that phosphorus release is possible under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Aerobic release (0.025 mg P l−1 over 5 days) was possible up to the point when mass resuspension of sediment occurred. Anaerobic release for the same period and mixing conditions was 0.183 mg Pl−1.
4. The release rate under aerobic conditions at 10°C equates to an internal areal loading of 0.134 g P m−2 yr−1, which is approximately 17% and 30% of the average total phosphorus and orthophosphate loadings respectively for the period 1974–79.
5. The results clearly implicate aerobic inorganic phosphorus release from the epilimnetic sediments as a significant source of this nutrient to the overlying water column and is likely a major factor in the continuing eutrophic status in the lake.  相似文献

Python egg brooding typifies parental care because it consists of multiple behaviours that provide for multiple developmental needs. For example, tightly coiling around the eggs benefits embryonic water balance, but periodic female postural adjustments improve embryonic gas exchange. Regardless of these postural adjustments, egg brooding creates a hypoxic intra-clutch environment that constrains embryonic metabolism. We further examined this novel and useful parental care model to determine: (1) any fitness-related costs of egg brooding to offspring; (2) whether any long-term costs are alleviated by postural adjustments. We artificially incubated Children's python ( Antaresia childreni ) clutches and modulated oxygen partial pressure ( P O2) to create three treatments: normoxic (NRM, 20.3 kPa O2), brooding [BRD, P O2 profile typical of clutch P O2 ( P O2clutch) in maternally brooded clutches, 15.8–19.3 kPa O2] and low (LOW, predicted P O2 profile of maternally brooded P O2clutch if females did not make postural adjustments, 14.4–18.6 kPa O2). Using various metrics from ∼12 days pre-hatching to 14 days post-hatching, we demonstrated that NRM offspring were larger, faster and stronger than BRD offspring. As only hatchling heart mass differed between BRD and LOW treatments (LOW > BRD), postural adjustments may not alleviate hypoxia-related costs to embryos. Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum L. var. Bel W3) plants exposed to ozone (O3) were investigated using proton-transfer-reaction mass-spectrometry (PTR-MS) and gas chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) to find a quantitative reference for plants' responses to O3 stress. O3 exposures to illuminated plants induced post-exposure VOC emission bursts. The lag time for the onset of volatile C6 emissions produced within the octadecanoid pathway was found to be inversely proportional to O3 uptake, or more precisely, to the O3 flux density into the plants. In cases of short O3 pulses of identical duration the total amount of these emitted C6 VOC was related to the O3 flux density into the plants, and not to ozone concentrations or dose–response relationships such as AOT 40 values. Approximately one C6 product was emitted per five O3 molecules taken up by the plant. A threshold flux density of O3 inducing emissions of C6 products was found to be (1.6 ± 0.7) × 10−8 mol m−2 s−1.  相似文献

1. Sediment resuspension dynamics were investigated in relation to changes in water column nutrients (TP, TN, PO4-P, NO3-N and NH4-N), chlorophyll a and phaeopigment in seven shallow ( Z m < 1.5 m) lakes in South Island, New Zealand, ranging in area from 0.1 to 180 km2.
2. Benthic shear stress, calculated from wind speed, effective fetch and depth, was a considerably better predictor of nutrient and pigment concentrations than wind speed.
3. For TP, TN, chlorophyll a and phaeopigment, sixteen of the possible twenty-eight linear correlations with benthic shear stress were significant at P < 0.05, with 16–87% of the variation being explained by shear stress.
4. Wind decreased the ratios of TN : TP, with ratios exponentially approaching those of the sediments as shear stress increased in four of the lakes.
5. Relationships of dissolved inorganic nutrients to shear stress were considerably weaker than those for total nutrients and showed no consistent trend over the seven lakes.
6. Estimated annual mean TP inclusive of resuspension was over four times higher than that derived from measured calm samples in two lakes.
7. The number of nutrient and pigment parameters that were significantly correlated with shear stress and the strengths of the relationships varied widely from lake to lake. We could establish no simple relationships between these effects and any single characteristic of the lake, sediment, or water.
8. A function is developed to predict the rate of entrainment of TN and TP in response to an applied shear stress, where the independent variables are sediment nutrient content and particle size, and the macrophyte density in the lake.  相似文献

Abstract Denitrification was measured in intact sediment cores and in homogenised slurries using membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Dissolved concentrations of O2, N2, N2O and CO2 were simultaneously monitored. Using a 0.8 mm diameter needle probe, a comparison was made of the gas profiles of intact cores obtained under different conditions, i.e. with air or argon as the headspace gas and after the addition of nitrate and/or a carbon source to the sediment surface. O2 was detectable to a depth of 1 cm under a headspace of air and the depth at which the maxima of denitrification products occurred was 1.5–2 cm. Denitrification products (N2O, N2) occurred in the surface layers where O2 was above the minimum level of detectability (> 0.25 μM): diffusion of N2 and N2O upwards from the anoxic zone, local anaerobic microenvironments or aerobic denitrification are alternative explanations for this observation. The addition of nitrate and/or acetate increased the concentrations of N2, N2O and CO2 in the sediment core. In sediment slurries, the pH, nitrate concentration, carbon source and the depth from which the sample was taken affected the rate of denitrification. Nitrogen was the sole detectable end product. Maximum denitrification occurred at pH 7.5 and at 20 mM nitrate. Denitrification was at a maximum in those slurries prepared from sections of core at 1–2 cm depth.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of organic additions on nitrification and dentrification were examined in sediment microcosms. The organic material, heat killed yeast, had a C/N ratio of 7.5 and was added to sieved, homogenized sediments. Four treatments were compared: no addition (control), 30 g dry weight (dw) m−2 mixed throughout the 10 cm sediment column (30M), 100 g dw m−2 mixed throughout sediments (100M), and 100 g dw m−2 mixed into top 1 cm (100S). After the microcosms had been established for 7–11 days, depth of O2 penetration, sediment-water fluxes and nitrification rates were measured. Nitrification rates were measured using three different techniques: N-serve and acetylene inhibition in intact cores, and nitrification potentials in slurris. Increased organic additions decreased O2 penetration from 2.7 to 0.2 mm while increasing both O2 consumption, from 30 to 70 mmol O2 m−2 d−1, and NO3 flux into sediments. Nitrification rates in intact cores were similar for the two methods. Highest rates occurred in the 30M treatment, while the lowest rate was measured in the 100S treatment. Total denitrification rates (estimated from nitrification and nitrate fluxes) increased with increased organic addition, because of the high concentrations of NO3 (40 μM) in the overlaying water. The ratio of nitrification: denitrification was used as an indication of the importance of nitrification as the NO3 supply for denitrificaion. SUMMARY 1. Metabolic and biogeochemical processes in hyporheic zones may depend on inputs of coarse particulate organic matter. Our research focused on how differing quantity and quality of organic matter affects metabolism and nutrient retention in the hyporheic zone of a first-order Appalachian stream.
2. Sixteen plots were established on a tributary of Hugh White Creek, NC, U.S.A. Sediment was extracted and treated with leaves, wood, plastic strips or remained unamended. Following treatment, sediment was returned to the stream and, approximately 3 months later, samples were removed from each plot.
3. Aerobic and anaerobic metabolism were measured as the change in O2 and CO2 in recirculating microcosms. At the same time, we monitored other possible terminal electron accepting processes and changes in nutrient concentrations. Aerobic metabolism was low in all treatments and respiratory quotients calculated for all treatments indicated that metabolism was dominated by anaerobic processes.
4. Rates of anaerobic respiration and total (combined aerobic and anaerobic) respiration were significantly greater ( P  < 0.05) in plots treated with leaf organic matter compared to controls.
5. Addition of leaves, which had a low C:N ratio, stimulated respiration in hyporheic sediments. Anaerobic processes dominated metabolism in both control and amended sediments. Enhanced metabolic rates increased retention of many solutes, indicating that energy flow and nutrient dynamics in the subsurface of streams may depend upon the quantity and quality of imported carbon.  相似文献

The ratio of dissolved fixed inorganic nitrogen to soluble inorganic phosphate (N:P) in the ocean interior is relatively constant, averaging ~16 : 1 by atoms. In contrast, the ratio of these two elements spans more than six orders of magnitude in lakes and other aquatic environments. To understand the factors influencing N:P ratios in aquatic environments, we analyzed 111 observational datasets derived from 35 water bodies, ranging from small lakes to ocean basins. Our results reveal that N:P ratios are highly correlated with the concentration of dissolved O2 below ~100 µmol L−1. At higher concentrations of O2, N:P ratios are highly variable and not correlated with O2; however, the coefficient of variation in N:P ratios is strongly related to the size of the water body. Hence, classical Redfield ratios observed in the ocean are anomalous; this specific elemental stoichiometry emerges not only as a consequence of the elemental ratio of the sinking flux of organic matter, but also as a result of the size of the basins and their ventilation. We propose that the link between N:P ratios, basin size and oxygen levels, along with the previously determined relationship between sedimentary δ15N and oxygen, can be used to infer historical N:P ratios for any water body.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Sephadex gel filtration of filtered water from small, Finnish forest lakes demonstrated abiotic movement of 33P from added PO4 to two higher molecular weight fractions. This movement was most pronounced in waters with high humic content which also had high iron content. The two fractions which took up 13P had nominal molecular weights of > 100,000 and 10,000-20,000.
2. An equilibrium existed between free PO4 and the two fractions. However, one fraction, at least, appeared to exist in two phases, with one phase in rapid equilibrium with free PO4 but the other in only slow equilibrium.
3. Additions of ferric iron up to 1 mg Fe l−1 to the filtered lake water stimulated movement from free PO4, provided high concentrations of humic materials were present. In the absence of humic materials even 0.1 mg Fe 1−1 would precipitate all added 33PO4.
4. The high molecular weight P was only partially reactive with standard molybdate reagents. Exposure of the high molecular weight P to sunlight caused a small release of PO4 under the experimental conditions employed.
5. Possible implications for biological phosphorus demand of such sequestration of free PO4 by humic materials in combination with iron are discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. A model relating log chlorophyll a concentration to log epilimnetic total phosphorus (TP) concentration was re-examined based on: (a) comparative and temporal studies of four stratifying Wisconsin and other highly eutrophic temperate lakes; (b) comparative summer lake surveys from Iowa and Alberta.
2. Although P-limited, deeper lakes with long hydraulic residence times and low external and internal nutrient loading in summer had summer chlorophyll a yields below model predictions based on spring and summer epilimnetic TP concentrations.
3. For lakes with summer epilimnetic TP between 30 and 80 mg m−3, chlorophyll a concentrations exceeded model predictions based on summer TP. This relationship held even for Lake Delavan, Wisconsin, where the ratio of available N to P was unfavourably low during spring turnover, and where the trans-thermocline N:P flux ratio was sub-optimal for algal needs in early summer.
4. With increasing summer TP concentrations and/or increasing epilimnetic circulation depth (>5m), chlorophyll a concentrations fell below model predictions—independent of the potential for N-limitation. This plateauing in chlorophyll a response occurred at lower epilimnetic TP content (−2) in lakes with elevated non-algal light extinction coefficients. Using Tailing's algorithm for the'column compensation point' (algal photosynthesis = algal respiration over diel cycle), light limitation best explains this fall-off in chlorophyll a yield.
5. The failure of the Dillon & Rigler (1974) spring TP v . summer chlorophyll a model for these Wisconsin lakes is unrelated to N-limitation. Instead, it reflects internal adjustment in take TP in response to stratification and seasonal external P loading.  相似文献
