A study of intraspecific variation in one of the most widespread and abundant terrestrial isopods in Europe, Oniscus asellus , is presented. It is concluded that previous attempts to describe intraspecific taxa in this species are invalid, but that the species is clearly divisible into two subspecies which differ in a number of features, including male sexual modifications. The nominal subspecies, Oniscus asellus asellus Linnaeus, 1758, is described in detail, and a neotype, collected from Uppsala, Sweden, where Linnaeus lived and worked, is designated. Oniscus asellus occidentalis ssp. nov . is also described, and reported as occurring in the far west of the species' range, in the British Isles, Ireland and France. Characters useful in distinguishing these two taxa are indicated and figured. Differences in the ecology of the two taxa are also noted, occidentalis appearing to be a relict Atlantic taxon, largely restricted to damp woodland. The existence of populations intermediate between asellus and occidentalis is noted, and the features of these populations discussed in detail. A combination of geographical, environmental and laboratory breeding data suggest that these intermediates arise through hybridization between the two subspecies, this process of hybridization being accelerated by human activity, which brings the two taxa into frequent contact. It is suggested that Oniscus asellus may provide an excellent model system for the study of the dynamics of hybrid zones.  相似文献

An ultrastructural study of the sinus gland of the terrestrial isopod, Oniscus asellus, reveals that this structure consists of two regions: the bulb, which is attached by a narrow stalk to the optic lobe, and the lateral extension, which extends from the bulb along the optic tract to the compound eye. The bulb has a distal region containing only neurosecretory terminals, and a proximal region containing terminals, glial cells, and axons that give rise to the distally located terminals. In total, the sinus gland contains five types of terminals which can be distinguished by their location and the appearance of their neurosecretory granules. Three terminal types are located in the bulb and two in the lateral extension. The size of the terminals in the bulb varies among the three types, but the number of terminals is approximately the same for each type. Conversely, the two terminal types in the lateral extension are similar in size, but differ in number. Axons of two terminal types in the bulb can be traced to the central region of the protocerebrum; axons of one terminal type in the bulb and of terminals in the lateral extension can be traced to the optic lobe.  相似文献

Summary The concentrations of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper have been determined in the hepatopancreas, hindgut and rest of the body tissues of Oniscus asellus collected from eight sites in the U.K. The hepatopancreas is by far the most important storage organ of heavy metals, particularly cadmium, and at each site, contains a mean of at least 89% of the total body load of this element. Specimens of Oniscus asellus from contaminated sites may contain concentrations of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper in the hepatopancreas of about 1%, 0.5%, 2.5% and 3% of the dry weight respectively, which are among the highest so far recorded in the soft tissues of any animal. There is a significant positive correlation between the mean relative dry weight of the hepatopancreas of Oniscus asellus and the concentrations of zinc or cadmium in leaf litter from all eight sites. It is suggested that animals from sites which are contaminated heavily with zinc or cadmium have a large hepatopancreas because this enables them to de-toxify a greater amount of the metal.  相似文献

The effect of differences in food composition on growth, body composition and cold tolerance of the isopods Porcellio scaber (Latreille) and Oniscus asellus (L.) has been studied. The effect on reproduction of P. scaber was included. Total lipid and protein content remained the same in O. asellus, given food with a nitrogen content of 2.4, 2.5, 2.8 or 3.1% for 8 weeks. Those fed on 3.1% N gained significantly more weight than those fed on 2.4, 2.5 or 2.8% N. Cold tolerance after a period of low temperature acclimation could not be tested, due to high mortality at the subzero treatment. Haemolymph osmolality increased after the winter acclimation for all food treatments. Juvenile P. scaber, given food of 1.8, 2.5 or 3.1% N, showed no difference in growth over 18 weeks, nor in body composition over 14 weeks. Diet did not influence cold tolerance ability and haemolymph osmolality remained the same with changing cold tolerance of the animals. Gravid females of P. scaber were separated to examine the effect of diet on reproduction. Diet did not influence the number of juveniles, nor their weight. In all food treatments, a significant correlation was found between the weight of the female and the number and weight of her offspring.  相似文献

Summary Under conditions of food deprivation, the hindgut epithelium of the experimental animals (Mesidotea entomon, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber) undergoes ultrastructural changes. After the application of different diets it was demonstrated that this part of the alimentary canal contains nutrients, though it is lined by a cuticle. Experimental evidence for the formation of glycogen from glucose offered as the only diet comes from autoradiographic experiments. Amino acids, too, were detected in the hindgut cells soon after refeeding. Lipids, on the other hand, which are first absorbed by the large cells of the midgut glands, were not found in the hindgut epithelium. The existence of lipid inclusions in the hindgut epithelium some weeks after refeeding, however, supports the hypothesis that lipids reach the epithelial cells of the hindgutvia midgut glands and hemolymph.  相似文献

Summary Developing spermatids and mature spermatozoa from the isopod, Oniscus asellus and the amphipod, Orchestoidea sp. have been examined with the light microscope and the electron microscope and have been found to have similar morphologies. As spermiogenesis proceeds the nucleus migrates to one pole of the spermatid at which point an acrosome, contiguous rod, and cross-striated tail develop. The acrosomal vesicle elongates to a cone-shaped, mature acrosome lying at the apex of a cross-striated tail and nucleus which are situated at approximate forty-five degrees to each other. The cross-striated tail originates as an evagination of the spermatid plasma membrane near the acrosomal vesicle. The tail eventually grows to lengths of four to five hundred microns. The mature, tail-like appendage is cross-striated at major 750 to 800 Å, and minor 125 to 150 Å, periodicities. When observed in vitro, mature sperm of both species appear non-motile.Possible homologies of this unusual spermatozoon with other types of spermatozoa are made and it is concluded that: 1) isopod and amphipod spermatozoa should be classified as non-flagellate; 2) the cross-striated tail, previously thought to be a flagellum, is a non-motile structure associated in development and possible function with the acrosome; and 3) the rodlike structure contiguous with the acrosome is similar to perforatoria described in some vertebrate sperm.Supported by U.S.P.H.S. In order to clarify the cause of ommochrome deficiency in an albino strain of the terrestrial isopod, Armadillidium vulgare, levels of xanthom-matin, 3-hydroxykynurenine, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid and tryptophan in whole body extracts of the albino and the wild type individuals were determined together with enzyme activities of kynurenine-3-hydroxylase, kynureninase and tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase. Xanthommatin could not be detected in the albinos. The levels of 3-hydroxykynurenine and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid were determined by high-performance liquid chro-matography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection and were markedly low in the albinos compared with the wild type individuals. In contrast to those, the tryptophan levels determined by HPLC with fluorescence detection did not differ significantly between the two phenotypes. In the albino A. vulgare, kynurenine-3-hydroxylase activity was lower and kynureninase activity was higher than in the wild type, although the differences were not statistically significant. Tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase activity in the albinos was less than 10% that in the wild type. Thus, ommochrome deficiency in the albino A. vulgare is considered to be caused by the extremely low activity of tryptophan-2,3-dioxygenase.  相似文献

Summary The endocardium of Oniscus asellus L. and Asellus aquaticus L. consists of lipid cells. The epicardium consists of a layer of cells with a vesiculated cytoplasm covered by a thick extracellular fibrous sheet. The myocardium is a single layer of cells, the sarcolemma invaginates at Z disc level forming transverse tubules, and longitudinal tubules branch off from these. At the A-I level' longitudinal tubules form transverse systems, which form couplings with the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The sarcoplasmic reticulum appears as perforated sheets enveloping the myofibrils. Two types of nerve terminal are found: one is embedded in a myocardial cell process, the other lies in a myocardial cell depression. They contain clear and dense-cored synaptic vesicles. This work was supported by grants from the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities  相似文献

Mean magnesium concentrations in intermoult Oniscus asellus, caged at 20 degrees C for 10 days, ranged from 1,059.15 +/- 51.9 ppm on diets containing 10 ppm nickel, to 6,827.6 +/- 314.1 ppm on a mixture of 500 ppm magnesium + 10 ppm nickel. Mean nickel concentrations ranged from 89.4 +/- 4.3 ppm on diets containing 500 ppm magnesium, to 314.0 +/- 14.8 ppm on a mixture of 500 ppm magnesium + 10 ppm nickel. At 30 degrees C, magnesium tissue concentrations ranged from 4,149.8 +/- 153.5 ppm on diets with 10 ppm nickel to 12,602.6 +/- 529.3 ppm on 500 ppm magnesium. Nickel concentrations at 30 degrees C varied from 156.8 +/- 6.7 in isopods in the control to 490.5 +/- 23.5 ppm on those on 500 ppm magnesium + 10 ppm nickel. Magnesium in intermoult isopods was mainly stored in other tissues, including the exoskeleton, and nickel in the hepatopancreas. Differences in both magnesium and nickel concentrations between males and females were not significant. Magnesium and nickel concentrations in postmoult isopods, on the average, amounted to 367.6 +/- 16.5 ppm and 18.7 +/- 0.7 ppm, respectively, at 20 degrees C, and 369.9 +/- 16.3 ppm and 30.9 +/- 1.3 ppm, respectively, at 30 degrees C. Differences between males and females, and between various treatments were not significant at P greater than 0.01. It is suggested that both hepatopancreas and other tissues, including the exoskeleton, are used as sinks to get rid of excessive tissue magnesium and nickel during the moult-cycle.  相似文献

Genetic studies and quantitative determination of levels of 3-hydroxykynurenine and kynurenine were performed in an albino strain of a terrestrial isopod Armadillidium vulgare. From the results of matings between the albino and the albino, the red, the dark red, or the wild type individuals, the albino A. vulgare seems to be regulated by an autosomal gene(s) recessive to its wild allele. Litter mating of F1 progenies obtained by crossing the albino and the red mutant or the albino and the dark red mutant yielded progenies at a ratio of 3:6:3:4 for the red, the dark red, the wild, and the albino phenotypes, respectively. The albino gene(s) seems not to be allelic but to be epistatic to the red gene(s) with respect to ommochrome biosynthesis. Quantitative determination of 3-hydroxykynurenine carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection revealed that the 3-hydroxykynurenine content in the albino was significantly lower than that in the wild or the red type. The whole content of 3-hydroxykynurenine after enzymatic conversion of kynurenine to 3-hydroxykynurenine was still considerably lower than that found in the wild type, even though it increased after the conversion. The albino gene(s) seems to be associated with a blockage at distinct level(s) of ommochrome biosynthesis.  相似文献

Maternally inherited Wolbachia (α-Proteobacteria) are widespread parasitic reproductive manipulators. A growing number of studies have described the presence of different Wolbachia strains within a same host. To date, no naturally occurring multiple infections have been recorded in terrestrial isopods. This is true for Armadillidium vulgare which is known to harbor non simultaneously three Wolbachia strains. Traditionally, such Wolbachia are detected by PCR amplification of the wsp gene and strains are characterized by sequencing. The presence of nucleotide deletions or insertions within the wsp gene, among these three different strains, provides the opportunity to test a novel genotyping method. Herein, we designed a new primer pair able to amplify products whose lengths are specific to each Wolbachia strain so as to detect the presence of multi-infections in A. vulgare. Experimental injections of Wolbachia strains in Wolbachia-free females were used to validate the methodology. We re-investigated, using this novel method, the infection status of 40 females sampled in 2003 and previously described as mono-infected based on the classical sequencing method. Among these females, 29 were identified as bi-infected. It is the first time that naturally occuring multiple infections of Wolbachia are detected within an individual A. vulgare host. Additionally, we resampled 6 of these populations in 2010 to check the infection status of females.  相似文献

Armadillidium vulgare is a terrestrial isopod (Crustacea, Oniscidea) which harbors Wolbachia bacterial endosymbionts. A. vulgare is the major model for the study of Wolbachia-mediated feminization of genetic males in crustaceans. As a consequence of their impact on host sex determination mechanisms, Wolbachia endosymbionts are thought to significantly influence A. vulgare evolution on various grounds, including population genetic structure, diversity and reproduction strategies. To provide molecular tools for examining these questions, we isolated microsatellite loci through 454 pyrosequencing of a repeat-enriched A. vulgare genomic library. We selected 14 markers and developed three polymorphic microsatellite multiplex kits. We tested the kits on two A. vulgare natural populations and found high genetic variation, thereby making it possible to investigate the impact of Wolbachia endosymbionts on A. vulgare nuclear variation at unprecedented resolution. In addition, we tested the transferability of these kits by cross-species amplification in five other terrestrial isopod species harboring Wolbachia endosymbionts. The microsatellite loci showed good transferability in particular in Armadillidium nasatum and Chaetophiloscia elongata, for which these markers represent promising tools for future genetic studies.  相似文献

Female sex determination in the pill bug Armadillidium vulgare is frequently under the control of feminizing parasitic sex factors (PSF). One of these PSF is an intracytoplasmic Wolbachia-like bacterium (F), while the other (f) is suspected of being an F-bacterial DNA sequence unstably integrated into the host genome. In most wild populations harboring PSF, all individuals are genetic males (ZZ), and female phenotypes occur only due to the presence of PSF which overrides the male determinant carried by the Z chromosome (females are thus ZZ +F or ZZ +f neo-females). Here we report the effects of the conflict between these PSF and a dominant autosomal masculinizing gene (M) on phenotypes. The M gene is able to override the feminizing effect of the f sex factor and, consequently, male sex may be restored. However, M is unable to restore male sex when competing with the F bacteria. It seems that the main effect of M is to delay the expression of F bacteria slightly, inducing intersex phenotypes. Most of these intersexes are functional females, able to transmit the masculinizing gene. The frequency of M and its effects on the sex ratio in wild populations are discussed.  相似文献

The chitin structures of two common European species belonging to Insecta (Melolontha melolontha) and Crustacea (Oniscus asellus) were isolated. The same procedure is followed for chitin isolations for both the species. First, HCl was used for removing of minerals in the organisms, and then, the protein structure was removed by using NaOH. Chitins obtained from these two species were characterized physicochemically. Physicochemical properties of chitins isolated from the insect and the crustacean were compared to each other. The chitin content for dry weights of M. melolontha and O. asellus were recorded as 13–14 and 6–7 %, respectively. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis were found to be more or less similar. The surface morphologies of chitins were examined via environmental scanning electron microscopy and nanofibers, and pore structures were observed. While the chitin nanofibers of O. asellus were adherent to each other, nanofibers of M. melolontha were non-adherent. On the other hand, the number of pores was much higher in the chitin from M. melolontha than in the chitin from O. asellus. Looking at the elemental analysis results, the M. melolontha chitin was found to be more pure than the O. asellus chitin. For this reason, M. melolontha has been considered more attractive source for chitin than O. asellus.  相似文献
