This paper describes and then analyzes the decision-making arrangements that prevail among the Raikas—nomadic shepherds from Western India. The paper suggests, using a simple analytical framework, that the existing distribution of decision-making during migration helps the Raikasto utilize available economies of scale, represent the different interest groups in their collectives, and control their decision-makers. At the same time, the ordinary shepherds in the camp are able to extract a comfortable subsistence from a complex and harsh environment by delegating much of their decision-making responsibilities to the leaders in the camp. To the extent shepherds in other parts of the world migrate over long distances and must confront similar issues of delegation of responsibilities and control over decision-makers, the analysis holds general relevance. 相似文献

以城市生态系统的格局一过程一功能等相关概念的辨析为基础,重点分析了城市景观格局的基本特征,以及城市格局对生态系统过程和功能的影响。结果表明,高度人工化、高度的时空异质特性、破碎性、不稳定性是城市景观格局最为显著的特征。城市所在区域的自然环境条件,历史文化传统,城市格局的基本骨架——交通系统和城市职能是影响城市格局形成和演变的重要驱动因素。城市景观结构决定了其生态过程。综合研究城市景观格局-过程-功能的关系,认识城市的发展演变过程,可为城市规划、建设和管理提供重要的科学基础。 相似文献

在RS与GIS技术支持下,以上海市外环以内城市中心区为区域背景,研究城市景观格局空间自相关与分形结构在不同粒度下的变化特征,揭示其对粒度的响应特征和敏感程度。结果表明,城市景观格局的空间自相关性和自相似性依赖于粒度的选择,MoranⅠ与各种景观类型的分维数均存在尺度效应;城市景观格局空间自相关性与自相似性在一定尺度范围内具有尺度依赖性,但二者对尺度的依赖程度不同。空间自相关性具有较高的尺度依赖性;而不同景观类型的自相似性随尺度的变化没有统一规律;城市景观格局的空间自相关性和自相似性对尺度变化的敏感点不同。居住景观的MoranⅠ对尺度变化的敏感点为50m,其他景观类型无明显的敏感点;分维数对尺度的敏感点因景观类型不同而异。 相似文献

The prevalence of head louse (Pediculus hamanus var. capitis) infestation in preschool and school children in 9 urban and 8 rural areas of Korea, was investigated. Of 11,865 children who were examined for head lice and nits, 2,900(24.4%) were found infested. The over-all infestation rate of rural children, 58.9%, was higher than that of urban children, 14.4%. There also existed significant differences in the infestation rate among various regions of urban as well as rural areas. Females were more infested than males. But there was no differences in infestation rate in either sex of preschool age. The infestation rate increased gradually from the age of 6, reached a plateau between 9-12 years of age and thereafter slowly decreased. The infestation rate of an orphanage children was higher than that of general childhood population. Health education and mass-delousing attempt are urgently required to lower such a high prevalence of head louse infestation in Korea. 相似文献

The neuropeptide Oxytocin (OT) has been implicated in many aspects of mammalian social behavior. This study investigates how OT interacts with two well-studied determinants of cooperative behavior: incentives and social information. Participants received OT or a placebo and played two economic games: a Coordination Game (with strong incentives to cooperate) and a Prisoner's Dilemma (with weak cooperative incentives). OT enhanced cooperation only when social information was present, and this effect was significantly more pronounced in the Coordination Game. When social information was lacking, OT surprisingly decreased cooperation. Consistent with the well-established role of OT in trust-building and in social cognition, social information appears to be crucial for OT to boost cooperative expectations in an interdependent social interaction that provides incentives to cooperate. When these cues are absent, OT appears to instead elicit a risk-averse strategy. 相似文献

The ability to attach to host cells is one of the main determinants of the host range of influenza A viruses. By using virus histochemistry, we investigate the pattern of virus attachment of both a human and an avian influenza virus in colon and trachea sections from 12 wild bird species. We show that significant variations exist, even between closely related avian species, which suggests that the ability of wild birds to serve as hosts for influenza viruses strongly varies among species. These results will prove valuable to assess the possibilities of interspecies transmission of influenza viruses in natural environments and better understand the ecology of influenza. 相似文献

In nature, most bacteria live in surface-attached sedentary communities known as biofilms. Biofilms are often studied with respect to bacterial interactions. Many cells inhabiting biofilms are assumed to express ‘cooperative traits'', like the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS). These traits can enhance biofilm-related properties, such as stress resilience or colony expansion, while being costly to the cells that express them. In well-mixed populations cooperation is difficult to achieve, because non-cooperative individuals can reap the benefits of cooperation without having to pay the costs. The physical process of biofilm growth can, however, result in the spatial segregation of cooperative from non-cooperative individuals. This segregation can prevent non-cooperative cells from exploiting cooperative neighbors. Here we examine the interaction between spatial pattern formation and cooperation in Bacillus subtilis biofilms. We show, experimentally and by mathematical modeling, that the density of cells at the onset of biofilm growth affects pattern formation during biofilm growth. At low initial cell densities, co-cultured strains strongly segregate in space, whereas spatial segregation does not occur at high initial cell densities. As a consequence, EPS-producing cells have a competitive advantage over non-cooperative mutants when biofilms are initiated at a low density of founder cells, whereas EPS-deficient cells have an advantage at high cell densities. These results underline the importance of spatial pattern formation for competition among bacterial strains and the evolution of microbial cooperation. 相似文献

The spatial version of Prisoners Dilemma (PD) is studied, which incorporates habitat decay through change in the mortality parameter and habitat isolation through change in the colonization coefficient. We found four kinds of evolutionary results, which are affected profoundly by the elements of the payoff matrix and the ratio of the colonization coefficient to the mortality parameter: population extinction, a pure cooperator population, coexistence of cooperators and defectors, and a pure defector population. First, the parameter region of cooperation (pure cooperator and coexistence region) shrinks with an increase in the cooperative cost, and that of defection extends. The increase in cooperative reward makes the cooperative region extend and the defector region become small. Second, the cooperative reward can compensate for the extinction risk due to habitat destruction and allow a population to survive even if the colonization coefficient is smaller than the mortality parameter. Third, although habitat destruction (including decay and isolation) increase the extinction risk of a population, moderate external power can push the evolution of cooperation ahead of population extinction, and even make a completely cooperative world come into being. Finally, for certain values of elements of the payoff matrix, the population suffering habitat destruction can maintain a stable population size by regulating the frequencies of cooperators and defectors. This implies that the multi-behavior strategy within a population may be a mechanism to defend against the influences of a changing environment. 相似文献

Cooperation often involves behaviours that reduce immediate payoffs for actors. Delayed benefits have often been argued to pose problems for the evolution of cooperation because learning such contingencies may be difficult as partners may cheat in return. Therefore, the ability to achieve stable cooperation has often been linked to a species'' cognitive abilities, which is in turn linked to the evolution of increasingly complex central nervous systems. However, in their famous 1981 paper, Axelrod and Hamilton stated that in principle even bacteria could play a tit-for-tat strategy in an iterated Prisoner''s Dilemma. While to our knowledge this has not been documented, interspecific mutualisms are present in bacteria, plants and fungi. Moreover, many species which have evolved large brains in complex social environments lack convincing evidence in favour of reciprocity. What conditions must be fulfilled so that organisms with little to no brainpower, including plants and single-celled organisms, can, on average, gain benefits from interactions with partner species? On the other hand, what conditions favour the evolution of large brains and flexible behaviour, which includes the use of misinformation and so on? These questions are critical, as they begin to address why cognitive complexity would emerge when ‘simple’ cooperation is clearly sufficient in some cases. This paper spans the literature from bacteria to humans in our search for the key variables that link cooperation and deception to cognition. 相似文献

In the recently described simple model of dynamic receptor pattern generation we used a two-dimensional hexagonal area of a regular triangular network, formed by a statistically constant distribution of unit electrostatic charges in a dynamic equilibrium. A set of 16 transition rules was applied to all units simultaneously; the next state of each unit depended only on the previous state of its six nearest neighbours, and the transition of the total pattern into the new one occurred in a single jump. Hence we designated the initial simple model as jump model. In this paper we describe an advanced version of the model, in which simplified rules are applied to one unit after the other in a sequential order, from left to right, starting with the top row of units. In the advanced version the state of a unit depends not only on that of its six nearest neighbours, but also on the state of all units preceding in sequence the one actually considered. This results in flux-like transitions. We therefore designated the advanced version as the flux model. It is shown that the flux model represents a closer approximation of physical and biological realities than the original jump model. 相似文献

Patterns of conflict and cooperation both within and between societies may be related to the degree of cultural similarity within and between the same societies. A simple model of social learning is used to predict patterns of conflict and cooperation in hypothetical societies that differ in the roles of relatives and nonrelatives in the enculturation of children. In this work, we show that a one-dimensional model of the blood flow across the lungs can reproduce the evolution of a bolus versus the time. Solving the differential equation governing the bolus concentration in the framework of this model, we determine the solution which fulfills Gaussian initial boundary conditions. An effective parameter related to the ratio of a diffusion coefficient to the square of the mean speed of the flow is defined. The determination of its numerical values following a semi-empirical approach enables us to know accurately the mean transit time and the cardiac output. The results have been compared to other methods, and were found in good agreement. Such an approach could be of interest in all studies where the knowledge of flow—including micro-circulation—is needed. 相似文献

The significance of neurogenic influences upon the distribution of systemic and coronary fraction during rise of aortic pressure by step occlusion of ascending aorta was studied in anesthetized cats. Under elevation of aortic pressure up to 60 mm Hg the increase in systemic fraction and less pronounced rise of coronary fraction were observed. When aortic pressure elevation was more than 60 mm Hg commensurable increase of both fractions occurred. Under beta-adrenoreceptor blockade elevation of aortic pressure more than 60 mm Hg evoked the significant increase in systemic fraction and reduction in coronary fraction. 相似文献

Background
Several methods have been developed for the accurate reconstruction of gene trees. Some of them use reconciliation with a species tree to correct, a posteriori, errors in gene trees inferred from multiple sequence alignments. Unfortunately the best fit to sequence information can be lost during this process.Results
We describe GATC, a new algorithm for reconstructing a binary gene tree with branch length. GATC returns optimal solutions according to a measure combining both tree likelihood (according to sequence evolution) and a reconciliation score under the Duplication-Transfer-Loss (DTL) model. It can either be used to construct a gene tree from scratch or to correct trees infered by existing reconstruction method, making it highly flexible to various input data types. The method is based on a genetic algorithm acting on a population of trees at each step. It substantially increases the efficiency of the phylogeny space exploration, reducing the risk of falling into local minima, at a reasonable computational time. We have applied GATC to a dataset of simulated cyanobacterial phylogenies, as well as to an empirical dataset of three reference gene families, and showed that it is able to improve gene tree reconstructions compared with current state-of-the-art algorithms.Conclusion
The proposed algorithm is able to accurately reconstruct gene trees and is highly suitable for the construction of reference trees. Our results also highlight the efficiency of multi-objective optimization algorithms for the gene tree reconstruction problem. GATC is available on Github at: https://github.com/UdeM-LBIT/GATC.18.
The patterns of nucleotide difference were compared at 3,473,111 codons from 9,390 aligned orthologous genes of mouse (Mus musculus), rat (Rattus norvegicus), and human (Homo sapiens). The results showed evidence of a higher frequency of both synonymous and nonsynonymous differences from human in the rat than in the mouse. However, contrary to a previous report, there was no evidence of a greater frequency of codons with multiple nonsynonymous substitutions between the two rodent species than expected under random substitution. 相似文献

Identification of kin structure among Guam rail founders: a comparison of pedigrees and DNA profiles
Kin structure among founders can have a significant effect on subsequent population structure. Here we use the correlation between DNA profile similarity and relatedness calculated from pedigrees to test hypotheses regarding kin structure among founders to the captive Guam rail (Rallus owstoni) population. Five different pedigrees were generated under the following hypotheses: (i) founders are unrelated; (ii) founders are unrelated except for same-nest chicks; (iii) founders from the same major site are siblings; (iv) founders from the same local site are siblings; and (v) founders are related as defined by a UPGMA cluster analysis of DNA similarity data. Relatedness values from pedigrees 1, 2 and 5 had the highest correlation with DNA similarity but the correlation between relatedness and similarity were not significantly different among pedigrees. Pedigree 5 resulted in the highest correlation overall when using only relatedness values that changed as a result of different founder hypotheses. Thus, founders were assigned relatedness based on pedigree 5 because it had the highest correlations with DNA similarity, was the most conservative approach, and incorporated all field data. The analyses indicated that estimating relatedness using DNA profiles remains problematic, therefore we compared mean kinship, a measure of genetic importance, with mean DNA profile similarity to determine if genetic importance among individuals could be determined via use of DNA profiles alone. The significant correlation suggests this method may provide more information about population structure than was previously thought. Thus, DNA profiles can provide a reasonable explanation for founder relatedness and mean DNA profile similarity may be helpful in determining relative genetic importance of individuals when detailed pedigrees are absent. 相似文献
