Natural environmental change has produced countless opportunities for species to disperse into and persist in habitats where they previously did not exist. Introduction and stocking programmes have facilitated similar sorts of colonization opportunities across considerably greater geographical scales and often in much shorter periods of time. Even though the mechanism of colonization differs, the result can be the same: evolutionary change in the colonizing population in response to novel selection pressures. As a consequence, some human‐mediated fish transfers have unintentionally yielded novel research opportunities to study how phenotypes and genes interact with their environment and affect ecological and evolutionary change. The primary purpose here is to explore how work, directly or indirectly involved with human‐mediated transfers, has unintentionally yielded novel research and research opportunities in fish ecology and evolution. Insights have produced new knowledge or altered previously held perceptions on topics such as local adaptation, rate of evolutionary change, phenotypic plasticity, alternative reproductive strategies, population structure and colonization probability. Well‐documented stocking programmes, especially in terms of history, numbers and original population sources, can provide highly fertile ground for generating further insights on the ecology and evolution of fishes and of the factors likely to influence the success of conservation‐based, restoration programmes.  相似文献

A constant-temperature observaton chamber was developed during a project requiring data on normal, resting heartrates of newly hatched fry of closely related fish species. In the review, the life cycles and mutualistic relations within the nematode-bacteria associations are analyzed: nematodes Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (PWN) with bacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus spp., Burkholderia arboris; entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) of the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis with bacteria of the genera Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus. The life cycles of PWN and EPN show traits of the primary detrital trophism. Both cycles include invasion of the living host and are completed with death of the host, which is an obligate condition for dispersal of the nematodes and their associated bacteria. Nematodes and bacteria stimulate each other to reproduce fast; the diverse forms of their interactions are considered, including direct and indirect ones (via the plant or insect host). Bacteria of both mutualistic associations produce siderophores and antibiotics that prevent reproduction of other pathogenic and putrefactive microorganisms. Ectosymbiotic bacteria of PWN may be recruited into the association from among the inhabitants of the mucous cover of the nematode body, as well as from the pathogenic bacterial biota of local conifers; thus the PWN and bacteria are facultative synergists in the phytopathogenic process. Endosymbiotic bacteria of EPN are not capable of independent life; they have developed obligate associations with highly specific nematode hosts.  相似文献

Two major difficulties have long hindered studies of ancient permineralized micro‐organisms: (1) accurate documentation of their three‐dimensional morphology at micron‐scale resolution; and (2) direct characterization of their molecular‐structural composition. Here we introduce a technique new to palaeobiology, the three‐dimensional Raman imagery that meets both of these needs, which is a nonintrusive, nondestructive technique that can provide data by which to accurately and objectively characterize, in situ and at micron‐scale resolution, the morphology and molecular‐structural composition of permineralized micro‐organisms and their associated matrices. Application of this new technique can provide information about the morphology, taphonomy and fidelity of preservation of fossil micro‐organisms unavailable by any other means.  相似文献

Invasive insects impact forest carbon dynamics   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Invasive insects can impact ecosystem functioning by altering carbon, nutrient, and hydrologic cycles. In this study, we used eddy covariance to measure net CO2 exchange with the atmosphere (NEE), and biometric measurements to characterize net ecosystem productivity (NEP) in oak‐ and pine‐dominated forests that were defoliated by Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Three years of data were used to compare C dynamics; 2005 with minimal defoliation, 2006 with partial defoliation of the canopy and understory in a mixed stand, and 2007 with complete defoliation of an oak‐dominated stand, and partial defoliation of the mixed and pine‐dominated stands. Previous to defoliation in 2005, annual net CO2 exchange (NEEyr) was estimated at ?187, ?137 and ?204 g C m?2 yr?1 at the oak‐, mixed‐, and pine‐dominated stands, respectively. Annual NEP estimated from biometric measurements was 108%, 100%, and 98% of NEEyr in 2005 for the oak‐, mixed‐, and pine‐dominated stands, respectively. Gypsy moth defoliation strongly reduced fluxes in 2006 and 2007 compared with 2005; NEEyr was ?122, +103, and ?161 g C m?2 yr?1 in 2006, and +293, +129, and ?17 g C m?2 yr?1 in 2007 at the oak‐, mixed‐, and pine‐dominated stands, respectively. At the landscape scale, Gypsy moths defoliated 20.2% of upland forests in 2007. We calculated that defoliation in these upland forests reduced NEEyr by 41%, with a 55% reduction in the heavily impacted oak‐dominated stands. ‘Transient’ disturbances such as insect defoliation, nonstand replacing wildfires, and prescribed burns are major factors controlling NEE across this landscape, and when integrated over time, may explain much of the patterning of aboveground biomass and forest floor mass in these upland forests.  相似文献

Summary The stability of a large variety of insect populations was studied using 14 years of light-trap data collected in a relatively undisturbed tropical forest in Panama. Special emphasis was placed on trends in abundance over time. A large between-species variation was found in stability, ranging from nearly constant to violently fluctuating. Over a 14-year period 22% of the species with more than 26 individuals caught showed an average trend of more than 10% of their mean abundance per year, and 4% a trend of more than 20% per year. Even among the 78 species represented by more than 1000 individuals, 7 species, 9%, showed a trend of more than 10% of mean abundance per year. These results appear to be incompatible with the generally held tenet that natural populations in undisturbed environments fluctuate within rather narrow abundance limits, and may indicate that at least a certain proportion of natural populations are not kept within such limits by regulatory processes. Actual fluctuating patterns vary a great deal between species, suggesting the absence of some dominant environmental process affecting several species at the same time. The total number of species and individuals, and the associated value of the -diversity index remained at the same level over the 14 years.  相似文献

Tree diversity reduces herbivory by forest insects   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Biodiversity loss from plant communities is often acknowledged to affect primary production but little is known about effects on herbivores. We conducted a meta-analysis of a worldwide data set of 119 studies to compare herbivory in single-species and mixed forests. This showed a significant reduction of herbivory in more diverse forests but this varied with the host specificity of insects. In diverse forests, herbivory by oligophagous species was virtually always reduced, whereas the response of polyphagous species was variable. Further analyses revealed that the composition of tree mixtures may be more important than species richness per se because diversity effects on herbivory were greater when mixed forests comprised taxonomically more distant tree species, and when the proportion of non-host trees was greater than that of host trees. These findings provide new support for the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning across trophic levels.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy was used to evidence the aggregated structure of a forest soil as well as the presence of fungal hyphae external to soil aggregates. The supernatant of soil suspension in water mainly contained isolated bacteria, while ultrathin sections of aggregates frequently revealed groups of bacteria surrounded by a sheath of mucilage with adhering clay minerals on the outside. These results confirm the existence of two particular biotopes in the soil studied: one is located inside aggregates, and the other, in the inter-aggregate spaces.  相似文献

Altitudinal patterns in host suitability for forest insects   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Conspecific trees growing at high and low-elevations encounter different growing conditions and may vary in their suitability as hosts for herbivorous insects. Mountain tree populations may be more resistant to herbivory if low temperatures constrain growth more than they constrain photosynthesis, resulting in increased secondary metabolism (temperature hypothesis). Alternatively, mountain trees may be fertilized by atmospheric nitrogen deposition and become more palatable to insects (atmospheric deposition hypothesis). We evaluated these two hypotheses by comparing high- and low-elevation trees with insect bioassays and analyses of foliar nitrogen and condensed tannin. Contrary to the temperature hypothesis, high-elevation foliage had higher leaf nitrogen (six of six tree species) and allowed higher growth rates of Lymantria dispar larvae (five of six tree species). The nitrogen deposition hypothesis was broadly supported by measurements from two mountains showing that high-elevation trees tended to have higher leaf nitrogen, lower leaf tannins, and support higher insect growth performance than conspecific trees from lower elevations. The deposition hypothesis was further supported by fertilization studies showing that simulated atmospheric nitrogen deposition changed the foliar chemistry of valley trees to resemble that of high-elevation trees. Predictions that the altitudinal gradient in foliar chemistry and host suitability should be steepest on mountains receiving more deposition were largely not supported, but interpretations are complicated by lack of replication among mountains. In the northeastern United States, increased host suitability of high-elevation trees seems sufficient to influence the population dynamics and community composition of herbivores. Atmospheric nitrogen deposition offers a promising hypothesis to explain and predict some important spatial patterns in herbivory. Received: 21 September 1997 / Accepted: 12 June 1998  相似文献

于2004~2006年间对浙江省乐清市林木蛀干害虫种类进行调查,结果显示该辖区共有47种蛀干害虫,隶属于8科41属。重点对松墨天牛Monochamus alternatus Hope、削尾材小蠹Xyleborus mutilatus Blandford等的成虫活动期林间种群数量动态进行监测。结果表明,松墨天牛林间活动期为4月下旬至11月中旬,6月上旬为高峰期,其诱获的成虫数占监测总数的41.1%,初步显示该虫在浙南地区松林内的种群数量变化规律。同时,还初步了解到削尾材小蠹成虫的活动规律。  相似文献

Forty-eightSerratia strains associated with insects were, identified to species level and biotyped according to recent taxonomic schemes. Each strain was submitted to 36 biochemical tests, including 23 carbon source utilization tests. Twenty-eight strains were assigned to eight biotypes ofSerratia marcescens: A1a, A2a, and A6a (pigmented biotypes: 18 strains); and A3a, A3b, A4a, A5, and TCT (nonpigmented biotypes: 10 strains). However, biotypes A8a, A8b, and A8c, which are frequently involved in nosocomial infections, were not found in insects. Ninetten strains were identified asS. liquefaciens (S. proteamaculans) biotypes C1a (12 strains), C1c (4 strains), C1d (2 strains), and one atypicalS. liquefaciens strain. Only one strain was identified asS. marinorubra (a nonchitinolytic species). The recent emergence ofSerratia in human pathology calls for a reevaluation of the idea of usingSerratia to biologically control insects.  相似文献

  1. Species distribution models, or SDMs, have become important decision support tools by answering fundamental questions about where species, including invasive species, are likely to survive and thrive based on environmental conditions.
  2. For an inexperienced modeller or model reviewer, the terminology and technical aspects of SDMs can be overwhelming, and even well-trained modellers can struggle to understand the implications of various modelling choices.
  3. Here, I outline some key considerations with respect to SDMs, focusing on their application to forest insects. Foremost, I assert that a model should be developed and evaluated with attention to relationships between an insect and its hosts, as those relationships determine much about the places the insect may occupy.
  4. In my view, the most successful models are constructed carefully and incorporate honest assessments of their limitations, sources of error and uncertainty, and the degree of linkage between the model and the real-world circumstances it is meant to portray.

大叶铁线莲Clematis heracleifolia DC. 的花朵大多下垂,需要传粉昆虫为其传粉,目前尚无关于其访花昆虫研究的报道。 通过2年的野外观察研究,共观察到27种昆虫访问大叶铁线莲。 发现有盗蜜行为的昆虫7种, 其中1种同时具有初级盗蜜和次级盗蜜行为,2种具有初级盗蜜行为,4种具有次级盗蜜行为;黄胸木蜂Xylocopa appendiculata Smith是主要的盗蜜昆虫,其盗蜜行为影响了其它昆虫的访花行为,对大叶铁线莲的传粉造成一定的影响。 在其余20种访花昆虫中,双带弄蝶Lobocla bifasciata (Bremer et Grey)、贡尺蛾Gonodontis aurata Prout、熊蜂Bombus sp.和姬蜂虻Systropus sp.是优势种; 而小青花金龟Oxycetonia jucunda Faldermann和日本条螽Ducetia japonica (Thunberg)访花频率最低,且访花目的只是取食花朵。 通过对大叶铁线莲访花昆虫的调查和盗蜜昆虫行为的研究,为大叶铁线莲的传粉生物学和保护提供参考依据。  相似文献

The occurrence of collagen in the cockroach Leucophaea maderae has been demonstrated by electron optical and biochemical techniques. Electron micrographs of tissues of this and a related species (Blaberus craniifer) are presented and they show that collagenous-type fibers occur in the stroma of nonneural as well as neural organs of these insects. Hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, amino acids considered to be "markers" for collagen, have been shown to be present in proteins extracted from material rich in neuroglandular tissue (corpus cardiacum plus corpus allatum). Trimmed carcasses of Leucophaea maderae have been shown to contain a protein or proteins soluble in hot trichloroacetic acid, with compositional characteristics similar to those of collagens in general, including diagnostic proportions of glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and hydroxylysine. This collagen is not soluble in dilute acetic acid or in concentrated solutions of guanidinium chloride. It is measurably digested by bacterial collagenase.  相似文献
