We studied the response of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) to supplementary far-red sidelight in seedlings grown in a forest soil substrate without additional nutrient supply. Our aim was to determine possible changes in the accumulation and allocation of dry weight and mineral nutrients and the presence of mycorrhizas. Half of the seedlings were grown in light conditions simulating reflected far-red light (FR) from neighbouring plants and the other half were controls not receiving additional FR. PAR irradiance was kept constant in both treatments. At the first harvest (41 d of treatment), FR+ had no effect on stem height, biomass accumulation or allocation. However, at the end of the experiment (93 d of treatment), an increase in stem extension rate and stem dry weight was observed in FR+ seedlings when compared to controls. Both control and treated plants had several morphological types of ectomycorrhizas, but no effect of FR+ on the frequency of these morphotypes was observed. Nor was the concentration of ergosterol or estimated mycorrhizal fungal biomass affected. Nutrients were more responsive to the light quality treatment: P concentration in roots and N and P contents in stems and roots were higher in FR+ plants than in control seedlings. These results are in contrast to those of a previous study in which the root system of pine seedlings, which were fertilised and had less developed mycorrhizas, was reduced by FR+. Loss of apical dominance is a well-known boron (B) deficiency symptom in trees. Recent field studies indicate that B deficiency may cause irreversible damage in emerging leader buds leading to bushy growth, and changes in developing needles in mature Norway spruce trees. We experimentally studied if timing of B application affects needles and buds of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) seedlings with low initial B levels. The treatments were: no B (B0); B supply from the beginning of the simulated summer (B1); starting soon after bud burst (B2) and starting at the occurrence of first needle primordia in new spruce buds (B3). At the end of the experiment, B concentration in B1 was 23 mg kg−1 (pine) or 17 mg kg−1 (spruce) and lower in the later applications. In B0 it was at deficiency limit. In B0, B2 and B3, there were fewer sclerenchyma cells, and cavities occurred in vascular cylinders in pine needles, and in spruce buds there were more tanniferous cells in the primordial shoots compared to B1. Furthermore, in all but B1 there was cell collapse in the bud apex of some spruce seedlings. The experimentally induced changes were the same as earlier reported in B deficient conifers in the field, and indicate, similarly as in the field that adequate B is necessary throughout the growing season for healthy growth, particularly for spruce. The differences between spruce and pines are due, at least partly, to the differences in time frame of needle development and in the differences in development of conducting tissues in the buds.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by inadequate secretion of insulin. Polyamine oxidase (PAO), a FAD-containing enzyme is involved in the biodegradation of Sp and Spd, catalyzing the oxidative deamination of Sp and Spd, resulting in production of amonia (NH3), corresponding amino aldehydes and H2O2. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and acrolein (CH2=CHCHO), potentially toxic agents, which induce oxidative stress in mammalian cells, are then spontaneously formed from aminoaldehydes. The main signs of oxidative stress in diabetic children were the values of HbA1c and MDA levels. Polyamines have an insulin-like action. Antiglycation property of spermine and spermidine has been recently confirmed. There are no data in the literature about plasma polyamine oxidase (PAO) activities in children with type 1 diabetes. The idea of this study was to evaluate the polyamine metabolism through the estimation of polyamine oxidase activity. We have study children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus (n = 35, age group of 5–16 years, as well as age-matched healthy control subjects (n = 25). The biochemical investigations were done on diabetic children who have the pathological values of glucose (9.11–17.33 mmol/l) and glycosylated Hb (7.57–14.49% HbA1c). The children in the control group have referent values of glucose and glycated hemoglobin (4.11-5.84 mmol/L and HbA1c 4.22-6.81% of the total Hb. Glucose levels in blood plasma and glycosylated hemoglobin in erythrocythes hemolysates (HbA1c) were measured by using standard laboratory methods. PAO activity in venous blood plasma and the amount of malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured by the spectrophotometric methods. PAO activity, glycemia, HbA1c and MDA were significantly increased in diabetic children compared to the control subjects. PAO activity in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus was very high. The findings of higher blood HbA1C and MDA levels confirm the presence of oxidant stress in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and demonstrate that PAO activity may participate in these circumstances.  相似文献

A central issue in our understanding of the evolution of the diversity of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) is whether or not compounds are functional, conferring an advantage to the plant, or non-functional. We examine the hypothesis that the diversity of monoterpene PSMs within a plant species (Scots pine Pinus sylvestris) may be explained by different compounds acting as defences against high-impact herbivores operating at different life stages. We also hypothesize that pairwise coevolution, with uncorrelated interactions, is more likely to result in greater PSM diversity, than diffuse coevolution. We tested whether up to 13 different monoterpenes in Scots pine were inhibitory to herbivory by slugs (Arion ater), bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), each of which attack trees at a different life stage. Plants containing more α-pinene were avoided by both slugs and capercaillie, which may act as reinforcing selective agents for this dominant defensive compound. Herbivory by red deer and capercaillie were, respectively, weakly negatively associated with δ(3)-carene, and strongly negatively correlated with the minor compound β-ocimene. Three of the four herbivores are probably contributory selective agents on some of the terpenes, and thus maintain some, but by no means all, of the phytochemical diversity in the species. The correlated defensive function of α-pinene against slugs and capercaillie is consistent with diffuse coevolutionary processes.  相似文献

Food availability during the breeding season plays a critical role in reproductive success of insectivorous birds. Given that the invasive Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) is known to alter arthropod communities, we predicted that its invasion may affect the availability of food resources for coexisting foliage-gleaning birds. With this aim we studied, for 3 years, foliage arthropods occurring on cork oaks (Quercus suber) and tree heaths (Erica arborea) in invaded and non-invaded secondary forests of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula. Our results show that Argentine ants interact with arboreal foliage arthropods in a different manner than the native ants they displace do. The invasive ant impacted the arthropod community by reducing order diversity and ant species richness and by causing extirpation of most native ant species. Arthropod availability for foliage gleaners’ nestlings diminished in invaded cork oaks, mainly responding to the abundance and biomass depletion of caterpillars. Results suggest that the reproduction of canopy-foraging foliage-gleaning species that mostly rely on caterpillars to feed their young could be compromised by the Argentine ant invasion. Thus, the Argentine ant could be promoting bottom-up effects in the trophic web through its effects on the availability of arthropod preys for insectivorous birds.  相似文献

Background and Aims Although extreme climatic events such as drought are known to modify forest dynamics by triggering tree dieback, the impact of extreme cold events, especially at the low-latitude margin (‘rear edge’) of species distributional ranges, has received little attention. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of one such extreme cold event on a population of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) along the species’ European southern rear-edge range limit and to determine how such events can be incorporated into species distribution models (SDMs).Methods A combination of dendrochronology and field observation was used to quantify how an extreme cold event in 2001 in eastern Spain affected growth, needle loss and mortality of Scots pine. Long-term European climatic data sets were used to contextualize the severity of the 2001 event, and an SDM for Scots pine in Europe was used to predict climatic range limits.Key Results The 2001 winter reached record minimum temperatures (equivalent to the maximum European-wide diurnal ranges) and, for trees already stressed by a preceding dry summer and autumn, this caused dieback and large-scale mortality. Needle loss and mortality were particularly evident in south-facing sites, where post-event recovery was greatly reduced. The SDM predicted European Scots pine distribution mainly on the basis of responses to maximum and minimum monthly temperatures, but in comparison with this the observed effects of the 2001 cold event at the southerly edge of the range limit were unforeseen.Conclusions The results suggest that in order to better forecast how anthropogenic climate change might affect future forest distributions, distribution modelling techniques such as SDMs must incorporate climatic extremes. For Scots pine, this study shows that the effects of cold extremes should be included across the entire distribution margin, including the southern ‘rear edge’, in order to avoid biased predictions based solely on warmer climatic scenarios.  相似文献

The involvement of potassium (K+)-selective, Shaker-type channels, particularly AKT1, in primary K+ acquisition in roots of higher plants has long been of interest, particularly in the context of low-affinity K+ uptake, at high K+ concentrations, as well as uptake from low-K+ media under ammonium (NH4+) stress. We recently demonstrated that K+ channels cannot mediate K+ acquisition in roots of intact barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings at low (22.5 µM) external K+ concentrations ([K+]ext) and in the presence of high (10 mM) external NH4+, while the model species Arabidopsis thaliana L. utilizes channels under comparable conditions. However, when external NH4+ was suddenly withdrawn, a thermodynamic shift to passive (channel-mediated) K+ influx was observed in barley and both species demonstrated immediate and dramatic stimulations in K+ influx, illustrating a hitherto unexplored magnitude and rapidity of K+-uptake capacity and plasticity. Here, we expand on our previous work by offering further characterization of channel-mediated K+ fluxes in intact barley, with particular focus on anion effects, root respiration and pharmacological sensitivity and highlight key additions to the current model of K+ acquisition.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression and heterosis are the two ends of phenotypic changes defined by the genome-wide homozygosity. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of genetic marker-based homozygosity estimates with 46 N-glycan features measured in human plasma. The study was based on a total of 2,341 subjects, originating from three isolated island communities in Croatia (Vis and Korcula islands) and Scotland (Orkney Islands). In species where parents repeatedly provide their offspring with food, the offspring often communicate their need to the parents. Burying beetles, which breed on a wide size range of carcasses of small vertebrates, are interesting model systems to test theories on begging, because the larvae show partial begging, that is, they obtain food through both signalling to their parents (begging) and feeding directly from the carcass. We manipulated resource availability inNicrophorus vespilloides by providing parents with mouse carcasses spanning a wide size range, and allowing them to rear the larvae that hatched, so that both the amount of resources and the number of siblings varied. Time spent begging by each larva was strongly influenced by the time parents spent near the larvae. Brood size had a nonlinear effect on larval begging, with begging increasing with brood size for relatively smaller broods and decreasing again for larger broods. Carcass size and number of parents present had no effect on begging. Time spent provisioning the larvae by the parents was strongly associated with the time spent begging by each larva. Parents spent more time provisioning under biparental care than under uniparental care, while brood size and carcass size had no significant effect. These findings suggest that the larvae adjust their begging to the behaviour of their parents and the number of siblings, but not to the amount of resources. Furthermore, parents adjust the time spent provisioning to the average amount of begging by each larva in the brood, and not to the availability of resources.  相似文献

The effects of increased exogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition were assessed in several field fertilization trials. In a jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) forest, needle litter decomposed at the same rate in control plots and in plots fertilized with urea and ammonium nitrate (1350 kg N ha-1) with or without P and K. Mixed needle litter of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), western red cedar (Thuja plicata Donn) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) incubated in plots recently amended with sewage sludge (500 kg N ha-1) lost less weight during 3 years than did litter in control plots. Forest floor material also decomposed more slowly in plots amended with sewage sludge. Paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) leaf litter placed on sewage sludge (1000 kg N ha-1), pulp sludge, or sewage-pulp sludge mixtures decomposed at the same rate as leaf litter in control plots. These experiments demonstrate little effect of exogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition.The influence of endogenous N availability on rates of litter decomposition was examined in a microcosm experiment. Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm.) needle litter collected from N-fertilized trees (525 kg N ha-1 in ammonium nitrate) were 5 times richer in N than needles from control trees (1.56% N versus 0.33% N in control trees), but decomposed at the same rate. Green needles from fertilized trees contained twice as much N as needles from control trees (1.91% N versus 0.88% N), but decomposed at the same rate. These experiments suggest that N availability alone, either exogenous or endogenous, does not control rates of litter decomposition. Increased N availability, through fertilization or deposition, in the absence of changes in vegetation composition, will not alter rates of litter decomposition in forests.  相似文献
