In conjunction with an Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi , breeding enhancement program, fecal samples were examined for the presence of helminth parasite products (eggs, larvae, and proglottids). Eighty-two samples were examined from four island groups in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands: 38 from Kure Atoll, 32 from French Frigate Shoals, 11 from Laysan Island, and one from Lisianski Island. Identified helminth products include those of Diphyllobothrium sp., D. cameroni, Contracaecum turgidum, Anisakis sp., Corynosoma rauschi , and Trematoda. In addition, eggs from Halarachne laysanae (Atari) were found in 3 samples. Eggs of C. turgidum were present in the highest percentage (>64%) of samples from all locations. Eggs of Anisakis sp. and Trematoda are reported from this host for the first time. 相似文献

Hope has recently emerged as an important subject of inquiry in anthropology and social theory. This article examines the hope entailed in efforts to extend aspects of gift-giving to various other social and theoretical projects. I identify and contrast two different kinds of hope found in these efforts, which I will call 'hope in an end' and 'hope in the means'. The discussion focuses on two extensions of indigenous Fijian gift-giving: John D. Kelly and Martha Kaplan's recent analysis of Indo-Fijian sugar cane farmers'gift' of cane to an indigenous Fijian high chief in 1944; and the Fiji government Ministry of Tourism's efforts in the mid-1990s to train indigenous Fijian souvenir traders in a properly 'Fijian' manner of engagement with tourists. Gossypium tomentosum is the only member of the cotton genus endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago. It is morphologically distinct from other allopolyploid Gossypium species, and its phylogenetic relationships with them are uncertain. Chloroplast and ribosomal DNA restriction site variation were used to estimate the phylogeny of the allopolyploids. Gossypium mustelinum is resolved as sister to the remaining allopolyploid species, which include two species-pairs, G. barbadense-G. darwinii and G. hirsutum (including G. lanceolatum)-G. tomentosum. This indication that G. tomentosum is sister to G. hirsutum is supported by allozyme data. Gossypium tomentosum is proposed, based on biogeographic evidence and molecular data, to have originated by transoceanic dispersal from a Mesoamerican progenitor. Few restriction site variants were observed among the allopolyploids, suggesting that present lineages diverged relatively rapidly following polyploidization. Allozyme analysis of 30 G. tomentosum accessions collected from seven islands revealed relatively low levels of genetic diversity: 11 of 50 loci were polymorphic, mean number of alleles per locus was 1.24, and mean panmictic heterozygosity was 0.033. Little geographic patterning of allelic distributions was observed. Despite historical cultivation of G. barbadense and G. hirsutum in Hawaii and the existence of their naturalized derivatives, no allozyme evidence of interspecific introgression into G. tomentosum was detected. 相似文献
