Summary Variation at polymorphic isozyme loci was analyzed in Nantucket pine tip moth (NPTM) populations from 5 geographic locations. At the North Carolina location, populations representing 3 generations at 3 local sites were also studied. Four of the loci investigated (LAP, MDH, -GPDH and AK), although variable, had few alleles per locus (3–5) and few differences among populations in allele frequencies. At each locus, all populations had the same allele at a high frequency.At the PGM locus, fifteen alleles were identified and allelic frequencies varied among populations. At least eight alleles were present within a population and, in most populations, two or more alleles had high frequencies that differed among populations. An excess of homozygotes over Hardy-Weinberg expectations was found for 7 out of the 10 populations studied, indicating the probable existence of some form of inbreeding structure or populational subdivision within sampled stands.Joint consideration of the results observed for PGM and the other four loci is counterindicative of neutrality at all loci and strongly indicative of genetic differentiation among locally disjunct populations.Published as Paper No. 6751 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service 相似文献

Interactions among moths, crossbills, squirrels, and lodgepole pine in a geographic selection mosaic 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Repeated patterns among biological communities suggest similar evolutionary and ecological forces are acting on the communities. Conversely, the lack of such patterns suggests that similar forces are absent or additional ones are present. Coevolution between a seed predator, the red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra complex), and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) exemplifies the ecological and evolutionary predictions for coevolving systems. In the absence of another seed predator and preemptive competitor (pine squirrels Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), natural selection by crossbills results in the evolution of larger cones with thicker distal scales, while relaxation of selection by squirrels results in the evolution of cones with more seeds and a greater ratio of seed mass to cone mass. However, in one range, the Little Rocky Mountains, distal scale thickness has diverged as expected but cone size has not. In these mountains seed predation by lodgepole pine cone borer moths (Eucosma recissoriana) was about 10 times greater than in other ranges lacking squirrels. We quantified moth predation and cone traits and found that moths select for smaller cones with fewer seeds. Thus, selection by moths in the Little Rocky Mountains counters both selection by crossbills for large cone size and relaxation of selection by squirrels favoring more seeds per cone and accounts for the relatively small and few-seeded cones in these mountains. It is also apparent that selection by crossbills changes seed defenses in a manner that favors seed predation by moths, whereas selection by squirrels likely reduces such predation. These results demonstrate the importance of considering the evolutionary consequences of community context in locally evolved (coevolved) traits and interactions. 相似文献

A study was performed to evaluate the potential of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma exiguum Pinto and Platner (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), the newly registered insect growth regulator (IGR) tebufenozide (Confirm), and a modified spray technique (top whorl only pesticide application) for suppression of Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), damage in Virginia pine, Pinus virginiana Mill., Christmas trees. Augmentative releases of T. exiguum failed to increase parasitism levels in release plots compared with controls, and significant reduction in tip moth damage did not occur. High predation levels on released T. exiguum may have contributed to the failure of parasitoid augmentations. Whole-tree and top whorl tebufenozide treatments provided significantly greater damage control than corresponding applications of acephate (Orthene), a commonly used pesticide in Christmas trees. Damage to trees receiving whole-tree chemical applications did not differ significantly from trees receiving top whorl treatments for most measurements of damage. Top whorl chemical treatments resulted in a 67% reduction in time required for application and a 70% reduction in pesticide used. 相似文献

The jack pine tip beetle, Conophthorus banksianae McPherson (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) and the red pine cone beetle, C. resinosae Hopkins, are doubtful sibling species. However, it is possible that these two taxa are valid species that maintain reproductive isolation because they accept different hosts. In a series of laboratory and field cage experiments, the host acceptance behaviours of these two species under choice and no choice conditions were compared. The field experiments demonstrated that the two species have a similar propensity to accept jack pine cones and shoots for feeding, but differ consistently in their acceptance of red pine cones, and variably in their acceptance of red pine shoots. However, the laboratory experiments did not indicate a difference between the two species in their propensity to accept red pine cones for feeding. In field cages, C. resinosae accepted significantly more red pine cones for oviposition than C. banksianae; the situation was reversed for jack pine shoots. In comparison to C. banksianae, C. resinosae is a more generalist feeder. The results from this study suggest that host acceptance behaviour is a permeable barrier unable to ensure reproductive isolation between the two species. Although there are differences in the host acceptance behaviours between C. banksianae and C. resinosae, we conclude that these differences do not necessarily support their designation as distinct species. 相似文献

A 2-year-old pine plantation was selected to receive treatments of fertilizers and herbicides to evaluate effects on Nantucket pine tip moth infestations and the tree growth parameters of height, diameter and volume increment. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, and hexazinone and sulfometuron methyl herbicides were used in creating six treatments: (i) control; (ii) phosphorus; (iii) nitrogen and phosphorus; (iv) phosphorus and herbicide; (v) nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide; and (vi) herbicide. Treatments were applied in 1987 and 1988. In 1987, trees treated with nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide had significantly greater height, diameter and volume growth than trees not receiving fertilizer treatments, but did not have significantly higher tip moth infestations than control trees. Treatments receiving phosphorus only had much lower tip moth infestation rates than other treatments except nitrogen and phosphorus. In 1988, tip moth infestations were uniformly low, with no differences in treatment effects observed. 相似文献

The chemical and temporal features of the sex-pheromone emitted by Heliothis virescens females are encoded by a diverse array of output pathways from the male-specific macroglomerular complex (MGC) in the antennal lobe. Most output neurons (29 out of 32) were activated by antennal stimulation with the principal component of the sex-pheromone blend of this species, (Z)-11-hexadecenal. Six neurons were excited solely by this component, 8 neurons also responded to the second essential blend component, (Z)-9-tetradecenal, and 14 neurons displayed equivalent responses to the two. Many neurons also effectively encoded the onset and duration of the stimulus. In one additional neuron, a prolonged excitatory response (synergism) was evoked only by the blend of the two components, indicating that some MGC neurons function as blend detectors.In contrast to the situation in Helicoverpa zea, none of the MGC neurons in H. virescens responded selectively to (Z)-9-tetradecenal, suggesting that these two noctuid species employ different neural strategies to encode information about their respective pheromone blends.Three MGC-output neurons responded selectively to (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, an odorant released by some sympatric species that disrupts normal upwind flight to pheromones. Thus, changes in the attractant and deterrent chemical signals, as well as the physical features of these odor plumes, are encoded in the MGC across a diverse parallel array of output pathways to the protocerebrum.Abbreviations

A study of fertilizer and herbicide effects on Nantucket pine tip moth (NPTM), Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock) infestations was conducted in loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) plantations in Nacogdoches Co., Texas, from 1988 to 1989. Both fertilizer and herbicide applications had effects on NPTM infestation level, pupal weight and host tree oleoresin production. Nitrogen fertilization increased infestation levels; whereas, phosphorus applications tends to decrease infestation rate. Herbicide treatment had a negative effect on NPTM infestations possibly because of decreased moisture stress and increased tree vigour. This is in contrast to general observations of increased NPTM infestations associated with reducing competing vegetation. Fertilizer application alone did not significantly improve pine growth due to competing vegetation. A combination of fertilizer and herbicide achieved the best growth. 相似文献

Pheromone biosynthesis in many species of moths requires a pheromonotropic neurosecretion, the pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN), from the brain-subesophageal ganglion-corpora cardiaca complex. Some investigators suggest that PBAN is released into the hemolymph and acts directly on sex pheromone glands (SPG) via a Ca++/calmodulin-dependent adenylate cyclase. Others suggest, however, that PBAN acts via octopamine that is released by nerves from the terminal abdominal ganglion innervating the SPG. These findings suggest that there are controversies on the mode of action of PBAN and other pheromonotropic factors, sometimes even within the same species. Mating in many insects results in temporary or permanent suppression of pheromone production and/or receptivity. Such a suppression may result from physical blockage of the gonopore or deposition of pheromonostatic factor(s) by the male during copulation that result in suppressed pheromone production and/or receptivity in females either directly or by a primer effect. In several species of insects, including moths, a pheromonostatic factor is transferred in the seminal fluid of males. Similar to the controversies associated with the pheromonotropic activity of PBAN, sometimes even within the same species, there appear to be controversies in pheromonostasis in heliothines as well. This paper reviews these conflicting findings and presents some data on pheromonostatic and pheromonotropic activity in Heliothis virescens that support and conflict with current information, raising further questions. 【目的】分析近交繁殖对小菜蛾Plutella xylostella种群的影响,为室内繁殖小菜蛾种群提供依据。【方法】在室内条件下,连续饲养6代小菜蛾种群,比较近交种群和杂交种群在交配行为、繁殖能力、蛹重、成虫寿命及形态等方面的差异。【结果】近交繁殖各代蛹重达极显著差异,尤其第3代后,蛹重显著下降;近交各代的雌雄成虫在交配次数和交配持续时间上显著减小,尤其是第4代后,下降幅度极其明显,F6代雌(雄)成虫的交配次数和交配持续时间分别是F0代的12.9%(13.8%)和8.3%(8.9%),表明自F4代后,近交小菜蛾种群已呈现出明显的衰退现象。同样,F4代后近交种群的产卵前期、产卵期、产卵量、卵孵化率、成虫寿命等均极显著下降,但世代历期显著延长。同时,近交对雌雄成虫体长有显著影响,F6代雌雄成虫体长是F0代的60%左右。【结论】自近交繁殖3代始,会导致小菜蛾种群交配行为、繁殖及形态的变化,尤其是近交繁殖4代以后变化更为明显,使种群出现明显的衰退现象。因此,在小菜蛾室内繁殖时,隔一段时间(至多3代)采集远源虫源,避免种群衰退。 相似文献

Based on previous studies of odor-modulated flight where track parameter data was lumped and averaged, the speed and orientation of the moths' movement along their flight tracks have been said to be controlled to maintain certain “preferred” values. The results from our fine-scaled analysis of this behavior show that none of the track parameters typically measured are held constant. The moths' speed along the flight track is modulated substantially and predictably: fastest along the straight legs and slowest around the turns. In addition, about half of the individuals studied progressively reduced the peak speed along the straight legs as they approached the pheromone source. While most of the track legs between the turns were directed upwind, their orientations were widely distributed, indicating no preferred direction. Small fluctuations of orientation along some straight legs suggest corrective maneuvers to stabilize flight direction about an internal set point. The visual inputs hypothesized to control steering and speed, transverse and longitudinal image flow, changed continuously during upwind flight in pheromone, but no regular relationship between them was observed. We found that the orientation of the longitudinal body axis and the direction of thrust (course angle) were only rarely coincident during upwind flight to the odor source, suggesting that moths receive sensory input which differs quantitatively from that calculated by conventional methods. Our results strongly suggest that the long-accepted hypothetical mechanisms of control for this behavior do not operate in the manner in which they have been proposed. Accepted: 11 July 1997 相似文献

In many moth species regulation of pheromone production has been attributed to the timely release of a pheromone biosynthesis
activating neuropeptide (PBAN). The gene encoding PBAN has been sequenced in two moth species. Immunochemical studies as well
asin situ hybridization and Northern analysis of PBAN encoding mRNA have localized the neuroendocrine cells responsible for the production
of PBAN and have traced the neuronal network of PBAN immunoreactivity. Release into the bloodstream has been demonstrated,
the target tissue delineated, and the signal transduction pathway and its modulation analyzed. This paper reviews the current
status of research concerning the neuroendocrine control of pheromone production in Lepidopterans and presents some recent
developments concerning the receptors involved in the pheromonotropic activity. In this study, we report on the use of a biologically
active photoaffinity-biotin-labeled derivative of PBAN N-[N-(4-azido-tetrafluorobenzoyl-biocytinyloxyl-succinimide) and show
the presence of a protein (estimated molecular weight of 50 kDa) which specifically binds to PBAN in membrane preparations
of pheromone glands.

Migration rate is often thought to be affected by species distribution, abundance, body size, and niche width, but empirical results are controversial and fragmentary. In this study we examined these relationships in a large assemblage of noctuid moths. Migration rate was measured using two approaches, directly with a mark-recapture study in a network of small islands, and indirectly on the basis of the occurrence of moths outside their breeding habitat. The effects of the factors assumed to affect migration rate were adjusted for taxonomy using a simple yet novel approach based on logistic regression. Both with and without adjusting for taxonomy, the results indicate that abundance and body size influence migration rate, that the effects of abundance and body size have a negative interaction, and that the effects of ecological specialization on migration rate are evident (monophagous species migrate less than oligophagous or polyphagous species). The incidence of island or habitat patch occupancy was not affected by body size, most likely because body size has several contrasting consequences on the processes that determine island occupancy. Migration rate appears to be an evolutionarily labile character, which can readily transform in different phylogenetical lineages of moths. 相似文献

Sperm form and function remain poorly understood despite being of fundamental biological importance. An instructive approach has been to examine evolutionary associations across comparable taxa between sperm characters and other, potentially selective reproductive traits. We adopt this approach here in a comparative study examining how sperm lengths are associated with male and female reproductive characters across moths. Primary data have revealed Lepidoptera to be an ideal order for examination: there is profound variation in the dimensions (but not organization) of the reproductive traits between closely related species which all share a monophyletic ancestry, for example, eupyrene sperm length varies from 110 to 12,675 microm. Eupyrene (normal fertilizing) and apyrene (anucleate and non-fertile) sperm lengths are positively correlated across taxa and both sperm types show positive associations with mating pattern (as measured by the residual testis size). At fertilization, eupyrene sperm must migrate down the often elongated female spermathecal duct from storage to unite with the ovum. Across taxa, the elongation of this duct is associated with increased eupyrene sperm length, suggesting a positive female influence on sperm size since longer, more powerful sperm may be selected to migrate and/or compete successfully down greater ductal lengths. Apyrene sperm length is not associated with female reproductive tract dimensions. However, we found a positive relationship between the residual testis volume and spermathecal volume, suggesting coevolution between male investment in spermatogenesis and the extent of the female sperm storage capacity. Within males, there is a positive association between the two organs which form the ejaculate-containing spermatophore: the testes and the accessory gland. The 'trade-up' in investment to these components is discussed in relation to paternal investment and mating patterns. 相似文献
