A three-year multi-factorial microcosm experiment simulating fertilisation, defoliation and the composition of vascular vegetation in a dry grassland succession was used to test four hypotheses concerning the establishment and survival of bryophytes in grassland vegetation. H1: bryophyte cover may be used to predict bryophyte species richness. H2: bryophyte richness is suppressed at high nutrient levels and promoted by defoliation of vascular plants. H3: species richness of bryophytes is influenced by the species composition of the vascular vegetation. H4: bryophyte species richness is negatively correlated with vascular plant biomass.
The relationship between bryophyte richness and bryophyte cover was found to follow the classical species-area richness curve. Bryophyte species richness responded positively to defoliation and negatively to fertilisation. The species composition of vascular vegetation had no significant effect on bryophyte richness. Bryophyte species richness was lower at high vascular plant biomass and vascular plant dry weight above 400 g m−2 appeared fatal to bryophytes. At high nutrient levels, defoliation increased bryophyte richness, but defoliation did not fully compensate for the negative effect of fertilisation. The study reinforces the concern for short lived shuttle bryophytes in the agricultural landscape.  相似文献

Surface and leaf-litter arthropods in the coastal forests of Tanzania   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Surface and leaf litter arthropod assemblages of the seasonal lowland coastal forests of eastern Tanzania were investigated from eleven sites over a 3-year period (1991–93). Pit-fall trap data show that four groups comprise more than 10% of the total sample: ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, 31%), grasshoppers and crickets (Orthoptera, 22%), beetles (Coleoptera: 17.39%) and spiders (Araneae: 13.48%). Arthropod abundance varies considerably with season, with greater total numbers of arthropods in all groups found in wetter periods. Arthropod abundance also varies considerably according to habitat, with greatest numbers found in forests with the most intact canopy cover, and in valley-bottom forest as compared to ridge-top forest; the valleys are normally both wetter and with a more complete and taller canopy. Tullgren Funnel data show that over 50% of the leaf litter fauna comprises tiny arthropods of the groups Collembola and Acarina. Abundance of arthropods in the leaf litter of these forests varies from a maximum of ≈ 16,000 m–2, to a minimum of 780 m–2. Abundance is highest in wetter periods, in the forest areas with the most intact canopy cover, and in valley-bottom as opposed to ridge-top habitats.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake by the peat of two Antarctic bryophyte communities (a moss turf and a moss carpet) is converted to organic matter loss and used to derive the rate of decomposition. The decay rates obtained in this way are evaluated in two mathematical models which simulate the accumulation of dead organic matter (DOM) in the communities from the litter production and decomposition rate. Litter production, the extent of DOM accumulations at present on the sites and mean decomposition rates (i.e. fraction of standing crop lost per year) were 409 g m-2 year-1, 33.5 kg m-2 and 0.017 g g-1 year-1 in the moss turf and 392 g m-2 year-1, 29.6 kg m-2 and 0.010 g g-1 year-1 in the moss carpet respectively (all weights expressed as dry weight). Aerobic decomposition rate declined with depth in both communities. From the model's predictions it is suggested that the observed decay rate was too high in the moss turf and too low in the carpet. Possible reasons for this are discussed and suggestions made for future work.  相似文献

The amount of organic matter and phytomass is estimated on three types of shrub tundras in northern Sweden. The organic matter ranges from 23600 kg ha−1 on a dry dwarf birch tundra rich in dwarf shrubs, to 59600 kg ha−1 on a moist moss-rich dwarf birch-willow tundra. The phytomass reaches a peak of 14700 kg ha−1 on a mesic dwarf birch tundra, compared with 9230 and 8660 kg/ha−1 on the dry and moist sites. The belowground share of the phytomass decreases from 68% on the dry site to 54 and 47% on the mesic and moist tundras. Some adaptive advantages of belowground storage as well as of different life- and growthforms in different vegetational regions and local environments are discussed. Broad scale regional connections with tundra vegetation in other parts of Scandinavia and the Soviet Union are proposed, based on similarities in phytomass, distribution of plant groups, life- and growthforms. It is shown that the north Swedish tundra has many features in common with the subarctic shrub tundra in the USSR.  相似文献

Soil oxygen flux was measured polarographically in undisturbed tussock tundra and in an old vehicle track at Eagle Creek, Alaska. Because some polarograms did not show effective voltage plateaus, the polarographic method was tested for use in the tundra by experimental manipulation of soil water content and microbial oxygen demand. The response of soil oxygen flux was as predicted for artificially waterlogged systems, and the response to increased microbial demand indicated relatively high oxygen availability. Soil oxygen flux ranged from 25.9 ng O2 cm−2 min−1 in Sphagnum mats to 3.9 ng O2 cm−2 min−1 in unvegetated ruts of the vehicle track. Most sites in unvegetated ruts did not have measurable soil oxygen flux. In contrast, oxygen flux beneath Eriophorum vaginatum tussocks growing in the vehicle track averaged 10.7 ng O2 cm−2 min−1.  相似文献

Fish production was estimated at three sites on the Jarama River, a small, typical upland river in Central Spain. Population estimates were made by the successive removal method of electrofishing. The same six species were recorded at each of the sites: Chondrostoma polylepis, Barbus barbus bocagei, Leuciscus cephalus pyraenaicus, Salmo trutta m. fario, Gobio gobio and Cobitis paludicola , with the first three species always dominant. Density, biomass, production (assuming that No is the total number of eggs spawned), and available production were, respectively: 13502-85776 ind. ha−1, 178.6–221.3 kg ha−1, 221.7–583.6 kg ha−1 yr−1, 118.1–271.9 kg ha−1 yr−1. Production estimates based on mortality curves were 7.9–19.5% (mean: 13.7) lower than those based on estimated from the number of eggs laid. Production per unit of area was highest at the widest and deepest site. Brown trout production contributed only 2–4% of the total production for all sites.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess the roles of plant species, time, and site on competition for tracer 15N (without carrier) in tussock tundra ecosystems. Six experimental sites were located in northern Alaska. After one year across the experimental sites, the recovery of 15N by litter (11.3–16.3%) and mosses (5.4–16.4%) was significantly greater than for aboveground vascular plants (2.6-5.0%). 15N recoveries by tundra vascular plants (2.6–5.0%) were low when compared to forest trees (9–25%) which suggest that competition for nitrogen is particularly severe in these cold-dominated tundra ecosystems. There were no significant differences among sites in 15N recoveries by vascular plants, by mosses, or by litter. There was a statistically significant decline in 15N recovery with time for Vaccinium vitis-idaea and Eriophorum vaginatum between the second and third year. The shallow rooted Vaccinium vitis-ideae was more highly labeled than the deep rooted Eriophorum vaginatum . Nearness to the source of the applied 15N played a critical role in competition for surface applied nitrogen.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation activity was determined for Lotus tenuis. Medicago lupulina and Trifolium pratense . The three species grew in clones in grassland in an area reclaimed from brackish water in the 1940s. The N2[C2H2]-fixation was measured in soil cores throughout 1974 and 1975. From cores taken in dense and uniform stands of the species, the yearly N2[C2H2]-fixation at maximum cover was estimated. L. tenuis fixed about 4 g N m−2 yr−1 (area with max. cover 130%), i.e. 30–56% of its requirement. Both M. lupulina and T. pratense fixed about 7 g N m−2 yr−1 (maximum cover 37% and 80%) i.e. 67% of their N-requirement. Average N2[C2H2]-fixation for the whole area was 0.4 g N m−2 yr−1, considerably less than the N-addition through rainfall.  相似文献

Abstract Microbial populations, nitrogen mineralization potentials, and denitrification enzyme activities were examined in two abandoned carbolithic minesoils. Numbers and activities of bacteria and fungi were lower in nonamended than in lime and/or fly ash amended sites. Rates of aerobic NO3 production (3 to 38 μg-N kg−1 h−1) and anaerobic NO3 reduction to N2O (5 to 68 μg-N kg−1 h−1) were measured. Organisms capable of N2O production under anaerobic soil conditions were present in low numbers, and their activity was restricted in part by low soil pH. Nondenitrifying nitrate-reducing bacteria were more diverse and in greater numbers than respiratory denitrifiers and may have been responsible for N2O production in assays measuring denitrification enzyme activity.  相似文献

Addition of small amounts of Fe2+, Zn2+, Cu2+ and thiamine-HCl to the culture medium was required for promoting the galacto-oligosaccharide (Gal-OS)-producing activity of Sterigmatomyces elviae CBS8119, when the concentration of yeast extract in the medium was lowered to 0·1 g l−1. Galacto-oligosaccharide production using a recycling cell culture was performed in a medium containing 360 mg ml−1 of lactose supplemented with optimal concentrations of Fe2+ (1·5 mg l−1 of FeSO4.7H2O), Zn2+ (15 mg l−1 of ZnSO4.7H2O), Cu2+ (0·5 mg l−1 of CuSO4.5H2O) and thiamine-HCl (1 mg l−1 ) . Galacto-oligosaccharide production was maintained at high levels during six cycles of production, with the amount of Gal-OS produced in each cycle being more than 216 mg ml−1 (weight yield of more than 60%).  相似文献

1. A survey was made of denitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O) production in river sediments at fifty sites in north‐east England during one season in order to investigate the relationship between rates and environmental factors likely to influence these processes. The sites were chosen to represent a wide range of physical and chemical conditions. Denitrification rate and N2O production were measured within 5 h of sampling using the slurry acetylene blockage technique.
2. Denitrification rate ranged from less than 0.005–260 nmol N g–1 DW h–1, tending to increase in a downstream direction. N2O production ranged from negative values (net consumption) to 13 nmol N2O‐N g–1 DW h–1 and accounted for 0–115% of the N gases produced.
3. Denitrification rate and N2O concentration in the sediment were correlated positively with nitrate concentration in the water column, water content of the sediment and percentage of fine (< 100 μm) particles in the sediment.
4. The variation in denitrification rate was satisfactorily explained (64% total variance) by a model employing measurements of water nitrate and water content of sediments. No simple or multiple relationship was found for N2O production.  相似文献

The population density, age structure, biomass, growth and production of brown trout were investigated in four tributaries of the upper River Wye. The populations at each site were largely maintained by immigration from nursery areas. Abundance of separate year classes at sites on the three largest tributaries reached a peak at age 2+. On the smallest stream numbers reached a peak at 1+. Recruitment occurred throughout the year but decreased with age of year classes. Maximum O+ densities ranged from 0.04 to 0.89 m−2, and >0+ densities from 0.13 to 0.59 m−2. Average total biomass in 1975 ranged from 2.6 to 14.2 g m−2. Within the study sites annual trout production in 1975 ranged from 2.9–19.7 g m−2. Production values were dependent on age structure and population mobility at the study sites. In the three largest streams 2+ and 3+ fish contributed 66.3–88.3% of total production whilst 1+ and 2+ fish contributed 74.5–84.5 % of the total in the smallest stream. The mobile (non-resident) component of the population accounted for up to 60–70% of production at certain times of the year, but over the year (1976) accounted for =30 % of total production. The resident component of the highest annual production value (19.7 g m−2) was estimated to be between 15.0 and 18.2 g m−2.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Population dynamics (density, biomass, annual production), gut contents and feeding rates of mayflies ( Deleatidium spp.; Leptophlebiidae) were compared in two naturally acid (mean pH≃4.8). brownwater streams and two alkaline (mean pH 7.5), clearwater streams in South Westland, New Zealand.
2. Mean densities of larvae (range 234–2318 m−2) were higher in alkaline streams on most of the six bimonthly sampling dates. Mean biomass (range 0.020–0.376 g larval dry weight (LDW) m−2) was always highest at the stable, spring-fed, alkaline site and was lower at the acid sites and another alkaline site where the population was always dominated by small larvae.
3. Annual production was high at the more stable, alkaline site (10.35 gLDW m−2) but much lower at the other sites (2.49–3.77 g m−2).
4. Gut contents of larvae were dominated by fine (45–75 μm widest diameter) paniculate matter (69–99%), diatoms (up to 21%) and. at one site, filamentous algae (8–13%).
5. Grazing rates of mayflies on epilithon were significantly higher on stones taken from acid than alkaline streams and material grazed from the former contained a higher proportion of inorganic material (87–93% and 61–83% inorganics, respectively).
6. Higher grazing rates may reflect lower quality of epilithic food in acid, brownwater streams, a factor that could contribute to the lower productivity of Deleatidium populations at these sites.  相似文献

This study examined the phenology of the weed Achillea millefolium over a growing season in the Snowy Mountains. Vegetative and reproductive characteristics of plants in 1 m2 quadrats were compared among sites at four different altitudes (medium and high montane, low and high subalpine) and three types of infrastructure (primary road, secondary road and building, total 12 sites). Altitude, infrastructure and time of year did not affect percentage cover of vegetation. Flowering started earlier and lasted longer in the low montane sites compared to high subalpine sites. The type of infrastructure only affected the number of reproductive structures at the peak of flowering, with A. millefolium growing next to buildings having two to three times more inflorescences per m2 than along primary and secondary road verges. At the peak for each reproductive stage, there was an average of 1.47 developing inflorescences, 21 inflorescences in bud, 24 inflorescences in flower, 4 inflorescences setting seed, and 3 releasing seed. Based on the maximum number of inflorescences present at any time at each site, there was an average of 36 inflorescences, giving an estimate potential seed production of 51 400 seed per one m2 for A. millefolium in the Snowy Mountains. If the climate changes in the Snowy Mountains as predicted, then it is likely that yarrow will produce more inflorescences and seed in the higher altitude sites.  相似文献

The production of juvenile Atlantic salmon ( Sulmo salur L.) was investigated in 16 study sites in the upper Wye catchment during the period February 1975 to November 1976. The population structure was characterised by large numbers of 0+ fish whose abundance decreased with respect to time so that the numbers of each of the older year-classes was a function of the year-class strength of the original fry. The range of parr densities was similar to that recorded for other rivers: the estimates of 2+ smolts did not exceed about 0.04 m−2. Production ranged from 0.3 to 11.0 gm−2 a−l; Of and 1+ fish contributed over 72% and 3+ fish less than 1 % of the total annug production. The relationship between production P (gm−2 a−1) and mean biomass B (gm−2) for all yeatclasses considered separately and in combination can be expressed by the relationship P=ab . The values for a vary with age-composition and season but the values for b are not significantly different. Differences in growth rate of salmon between sites are small and differences in production result principally from differences in standing crop (biomass density). In most cases low values for salmon production can be attributed to poor spawning.  相似文献

Given their rapid growth and nutrient assimilation rates, Porphyra spp. are good candidates for bioremediation. The production potential of two northeast U.S. Porphyra species currently in culture ( P. purpurea and P. umbilicalis ) was evaluated by measuring rates of photosynthesis (as O2 evolution) of samples grown at 20° C. Gametophytes of P. umbilicalis photosynthesized at rates that were 80% higher than those of P. purpurea over 5–20° C at both sub-saturating and saturating irradiances (37 and 289 μmol photons m−2 s−1). Porphyra umbilicalis was both more efficient at low irradiances (higher alpha) and had a higher Pmax than did P. purpurea (23.0 vs. 15.6 μmol O2 g−1 DW min−1), suggesting that P. umbilicalis is a better choice for mass culture where self-shading may be severe. The photosynthesis-irradiance relationship for the Conchocelis stage of P. purpurea was also examined. Tufts of filaments, grown at 10, 15, and 20° C, were assayed at growth temperatures at irradiances ranging from 0–315 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Tufts were slightly more productive at 15° than at 10° C, but only ca. 4–6% as productive as gametophytes. Maximum rates of net photosynthesis were reduced by 66–74% in tufts grown at 20° C (only about 2% of gametophytes). The Conchocelis stage, however, need not limit mariculture operations; once Conchocelis cultures are established, they can be maintained over the long-term as ready sources of spores for net seeding.  相似文献

The distribution of microbial populations that decomposed sugar, cellulose and lignin-related substrates was examined in a beech Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. and maple Acer saccharum Marsh. dominated woodlot developed on glacial till. The topography of the woodlot, characterized by rises, depressions and more extensive level areas about 1 m in diameter with a 0.5 m vertical maximum, produced a mosaic of decomposer habitats designated as high, level and low sites.
In general, populations of sugar, cellulose and lignin decomposing organisms (based on ten estimates made from April to October) were two to four times higher in litter and soil samples from low sites than those from high sites. Sugar decomposing bacteria in litter were most abundant at all topographic sites. 135 × 106 g−1 dry litter at high sites, 396 × 106 g−1 at level sites and 456 × 106 g−1 at low sites; lignolytic fungi were least abundant, 391 × 102 g−1 dry litter at high sites. 700 × 106 g−1 at level sites and 954 × 102 g−1 at low sites. Numbers of microbial decomposers in the topographic sites were correlated with organic matter content. Distribution of fungal genera did not appear to be related to topographic site. Most populations examined showed two numerical peaks, one in late May or June and one in late September or October. It is suspected that these peaks were influenced by the coincident timing of favourable physical conditions and priming by soluble nutrients leached from litter.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The results of laboratory experiments on ciliate reproductive and respiratory rates have been combined with field data for ciliate numbers, to produce estimates of production and respiratory energy losses by communities of benthic ciliates. Annual production decreased with increasing depth, and it was estimated to be 345, 149 and 40 J cm−2 year−1 at three sites in Airthrey Loch, Scotland. A similar trend with increasing depth was recorded for annual respiratory energy losses, being 16, 11 and 4 J cm−2 year−1 at the three sites. The corresponding annual net production efficiencies (%) were 95.2, 93.1 and 91.5. When net production efficiencies were calculated for each period (the time between successive sampling occasions) as 100 (daily production/daily assimilation), the range extended from 63 to 98. The energetic efficiencies of the ciliate populations are discussed with reference to data in the literature for higher organisms.  相似文献

Adaptations to extreme low light in the fern Trichomanes speciosum   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Trichomanes speciosum is a threatened species restricted to sheltered, very humid sites. Uniquely amongst European ferns, differing ecological tolerances of the gametophyte and sporophyte generations are manifested as widely differing distributions. The perennial, vegetatively propagating gametophyte persists in drier, colder, darker habitats than the sporophyte. In sites where the gametophyte grows, light availability was found to be < 1 μmol m2 s1 for approx. 85% of daylight hours, rarely or (in some sites) never rising above 10 μmol m2 s1. Much of the time, light was < 0.01% of full sunlight. Measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence yield show that these plants have optimal photosynthesis at light intensities c . 5–10 μmol m2 s1, the highest light to which they are normally exposed to in their natural environment. The absence of any capacity for reversible nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching means that there is little or no protection of the photosynthetic apparatus from light-induced damage. We conclude that these plants are able to create what are essentially monocultures in their extreme environments only because of a combination of low metabolic rate (at low temperatures) and an ability to make efficient use of what little light is available to them by morphological and physiological means.  相似文献

The trophic basis of production of the macroinvertebrate communities at three sites on a second-order, low gradient blackwater stream in southeastern U.S.A. was determined. The sampling sites were located above, within and below a low-flow swamp system. From 47–64% of macroinvertebrate production was supported by FPOM at the three sites, with dependence on FPOM being greatest at the swamp site. Algae (filamentous species and diatoms) supported 15–31% of production, indicating that algae can be of considerable importance even in fully canopied headwater streams. The production of some collector-gatherers including Stenonema modestum (55%), Hexagenia munda (58%) and Baetis spp. (78%), was supported predominantly by algae. Algae also supported 61–79% of Hydropsychidae production and 68% of Simuliidae production. Animal material supported 16–26% of macroinvertebrate production at the three sites. CPOM was of minor direct importance to the macroinvertebrate community of this headwater stream, supporting only 1–3% of macroinvertebrate production. Shredders ingested only 1–3 g m−2 y−1 of CPOM, or about 1% of the annual direct leaf fall to this stream. Assuming a 10% assimilation efficiency for CPOM, shredders produced <3 g m−2 y−1 of FPOM through CPOM processing, this being approximately 2 orders of magnitude less than reported for high gradient headwater streams. These results indicate that low-order coastal plain streams vary somewhat from the River Continuum Concept in that they exhibit little utilization of and dependence on CPOM as a direct energy source. Only the smallest first-order streams and especially the extensive floodplains may be the functional headwaters of these stream systems.  相似文献
