Pollen sculpture elements of four Rhododendron species from 49 populations were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The sculpture in the polar areas of the studied taxa pollen differed in type, shape, size, and distribution of individual elements. There were five sculpture types identified. The pollen of Rhododendron ledebourii from various populations in Altai revealed sculpture elements characteristic of R. dauricum, R. mucronulatum, and R. sichotense, questioning the taxonomic position of the former species. Analysis of the geographical distribution of sculpture types clarified species boundaries and zones of sympatric distribution. The northern boundary of R. mucronulatum was expanded and new populations of R. sichotense were revealed. In the sympatric zones of R. mucronulatum and R. sichotense, there were intermediate populations showing pollen sculptures typical of R. dauricum, R. mucronulatum, and R. sichotense. The sculpture diversity observed in the pollen of R. dauricum, together with its presence in sympatric zones, suggests that it is probably a hybrid of R. sichotense and R. mucronulatum or a subspecies of R. sichotense.  相似文献

The hairs at the apical end of the seeds ofHillia are pluriseriate, multicellular structures. The cells making up a hair are elongated exotesta cells and, consequently, also have secondary thickenings identical (H. parasitica) or similar (H. costanensis) to those found on the exotesta cells on the main body of the seeds. Hair formation already starts in bud stage: at and around the chalazal region of an ovule, integument epidermis cells are grouped together to form ± elongated packets of 4–7 cells. The cells of each packet undergo further elongation and anticlinal division so that a hair on a mature seed may be up to c. 30 mm long. Basally, the seeds have a tail- to ± wing-like appendage, made up of only two cell layers, the exotesta of the ab- and adaxial side of the seed. This basal appendage shows the same anatomical structure as the wings of various anemochorous rubiaceous seeds. Although seed hairs of this kind are unique in theRubiaceae and — from the point of development and structure — not homologous to exotesta wings, the presence of a basal wing-like appendage suggests thatHillia, previously often placed into a tribe of its own (Hillieae), can be accommodated in theCinchoneae, a tribe in which winged, anemochorous seeds predominate. The tufts of hairs of the comose seeds ofHillia look superficially similar to those of certainAsclepiadaceae andApocynaceae (like theRubiaceae belonging to the orderGentianales). Comparisons based on literature data, however, reveal that there are striking differences in the position, development and structure of the hairs (produced at the micropylar end, initiated after fertilization, hairs unicellular, etc.).  相似文献

Berries of steroid-bearingSolanum viarum Dunal are exploited commercially in India as raw material by steroid industries for solasodine, a glycoalkaloid, present in the mucilaginous exotesta of the seed. Comparative ontogeny of exotesta studied through histochemical studies in diploid, autotetraploid and trisomic plants indicated similarity in the histochemical changes occurring during ontogeny of the outermost seed coat layer which culminated in the transformation of this layer into the mucilage layer. The increased cell size in this layer in the autotetraploid plants probably accounts for the higher steroid content reported. Corroborative evidences for histochemical changes observed in the mucilage layer were obtained from studies of ultrastructure using transmission electron microscopy.  相似文献

The seed coat structure of all 13 species ofCrossostylis was studied to contribute to an understanding of species delimitation and relationships within the genus. The mature seed coat is relatively uniform and consistently constructed mainly by a well-developed exotesta and a well-developed fibrous exotegmen. The species differ in the thickness of the exotesta and exotegmen, the anatomy of exotestal cells, the presence and absence of persistent mesotesta, and so forth. On the basis of comparisons of these characters, close relationships are suggested in the species groups such as:Crossostylis banksiana andC. cominsii; C. biflora, C. raiateensis andC. multiflora; C. gandiflora, C. sebertii andC. imera; and five species in the Fiji Islands. These relationships except for those of Fijian five species are also supported by cladistics as their common characters are evaluated as synapomorphy. Species-level separation ofC. banksiana, C. pedunculata andC. raiateensis each from the closest species is doubted based on the results of seed coat structure.  相似文献

Using AFLP analysis, the genetic variation in four population samples of Rhododendron ledebourii, three such samples of Rh. dauricum, two samples of Rh. sichotense, and one sample of Rh. mucronulatum was examined. Application of three selective primer pairs provided genotyping of 87 accessions from the four species at 213 loci. An analysis of molecular variance revealed a high level of differences between all four species (F ST = 0.172). Populations within the species were also differentiated: for Rh. dauricum F ST = 0.245; Rh. ledebourii F ST = 0.264; Rh. sichotense F ST = 0.034. The highest Nei distance was observed for Rh. mucronulatum with Rh. dauricum and Rh. ledebourii (D = 0.057 and 0.069, respectively). Similarity was observed between the species pairs of Rh. ledebourii-Rh. dauricum (0.032) and Rh. sichotense-Rh. mucronulatum (0.034). The Far Eastern species Rh. sichotense and Rh. mucronulatum were characterized by an elevated level of intrapopulation variation. The data from the AFLP-based analysis of differentiation and variation that were thus obtained were compared with the literature data on the morphological criteria that differentiate the species of interest and those regarding the history of the formation of their ranges. Rosettes of flooding-resistant Rumex palustris plants show a submergence-induced stimulation of elongation, which is confined to the petioles of young leaves. This response increases the probability of survival. It is induced by ethylene that accumulates in submerged tissues. Flooding-intolerant Rumex acetosella plants do not show this response. We investigated whether differences in shoot elongation between the species, between old and young leaves and between the petiole and leaf blade of a R. palustris plant result from differences in internal ethylene concentration or in sensitivity to the gas. Concentrations of free and conjugated ACC in petioles and leaf blades of R. palustris indicated that ethylene is synthesized throughout the submerged shoot, although production rates varied locally. Nevertheless, no differences in ethylene concentration were found between submerged leaves of various ages. In contrast, dose-response curves showed that only elongation of young petioles of R. palustris was sensitive to ethylene. In R. acetosella, elongation of all leaves was insensitive to ethylene. We conclude that variation in ethylene sensitivity rather than content explains the differences in submergence-induced shoot elongation between the two Rumex species and between leaves of R. palustris.  相似文献

Protocols are now available for seed harvest, storage and germination of several mesohaline and polyhaline species; however, low seedling survival rates point to the need for an increased understanding of factors affecting seedling establishment. Depth of seed burial in sediments and initial seedling growth rates are shown to be limiting factors for photosynthetic competency of Ruppia maritima and Potamogeton perfoliatus. Seedling emergence is inversely proportional to planting depth on sediments ranging in grain size from coarse sands (850 μm) to silt (63 μm). Less than 6% of the seeds of either species emerged when buried to a depth of 3 cm in test sediments. Germination was greatest for seeds placed on the surface of sediments; however, these seedlings were subject to displacement because of the weak and fragile roots produced during early growth. Fine sediments may be more favorable for R. maritima seedling establishment, because seedling emergence and height decreased with increasing sediment grain size. Potamogeton perfoliatus seedlings seem to be more tolerant of a wider range of sediment grain sizes than R. maritima as indicated by the lack of an effect of sediment grain size on P. perfoliatus seed emergence, seedling height, and biomass. Increasing nutrients stimulated seedlings of both species; however, even at the highest concentrations tested, growth, as determined by shoot elongation and leaf and root formation, slowed within 7–10 days. This suggests factors other than mineral nutrients and light limit growth or that growth shifts from aboveground biomass production to belowground vegetative spread.  相似文献

The peak echolocation frequency of insectivorous bats generally declines as body size increases. However, there are notable exceptions to this rule, with some species, such as Rhinolophus clivosus, having a higher than expected peak frequency for their body size. Such deviations from allometry may be associated with partitioning of foraging habitat (the foraging habitat hypothesis) or insect prey (the prey detection hypothesis). Alternatively, the deviations may be associated with the partitioning of sonar frequency bands to allow effective communication in a social context (the acoustic communication hypothesis). We tested the predictions of these hypotheses through comparisons at the family, clade and species level, using species of rhinolophids in general and R. clivosus, a species with a wide distribution, as a specific test case. We compared the wing parameters, echolocation frequency and ecology of R. clivosus to those of the sympatric R. capensis. Rhinolophus clivosus has a much higher echolocation frequency than predicted from its wing loading or body mass. Furthermore, contrary to the predictions of the foraging habitat hypothesis, we found no difference in foraging habitat between R. clivosus and R. capensis. The size range of insect prey taken by the two species also overlapped almost completely, contrary to the prey detection hypothesis. On the other hand, the variation of echolocation frequencies around the allometric relationship for rhinolophids was smaller than that for Myotis spp., supporting the prediction of the acoustic communication hypothesis. We thus propose that the relatively high peak frequency of R. clivosus is the result of partitioning of sonar frequency bands to minimize the ambiguity of echolocation calls during social interactions.  相似文献

Soil flooding results in unusually low oxygen concentrations and high ethylene concentrations in the roots of plants. This gas composition had a strongly negative effect on root elongation of two Rumex species. The effect of low oxygen concentrations was less severe when roots contained aerenchymatous tissues, such as in R. palustris Sm. R. thyrsiflorus Fingerh., which has little root porosity, was much more affected. Ethylene had an even stronger effect on root elongation than hypoxia, since very small concentrations (0.1 cm3 m?3) reduced root extension in the two species, and higher concentrations inhibited elongation more severely than did anoxia in the culture medium. Thus, ethylene contributes strongly to the negative effects of flooding on root growth. An exception may be the highly aerenchymatous, adventitious roots of R. palustris. Aerenchyma in these roots provides a low-resistance diffusion pathway for both endogenously produced ethylene and shoot-derived oxygen. This paper shows that extension by roots of R. palustris in flooded soil depends almost completely on this shoot-derived oxygen, and that aerenchyma prevents accumulation of growth-inhibiting levels of ethylene in the root.  相似文献

Differences in the relative growth rules of the inherently slow-growing Deschampsia flexuosa L. and the inherently fast-growing Holcus lanatus L. were reflected in cell wall synthesis in the elongation zone of the leaves. Leaf elongation rates depended on the size of the plant and ranged from 6 to 14 mm d?1 in Deschampsia and from 12 to 42 mm d?1 in Holcus. Anatomical data showed that the epidermis and vascular tissue are the important tissues controlling leaf extension. The cell wall polysaccharides of fully expanded leaves of the two species were identical in sugar composition. Enzymatic hydrolysis of polymeric sugars in the cell walls of the sheath and the lamina gave glucose (85%), arabinose (3.5%), fucose (0.5%), xylose (5.0%), mannose (0.5%), galaclose (0.8%) and galacturonic acid (3–4%). This composition applied throughout the blade and the sheath and did not change with ageing. Polysaccharides in the meristems of the two species showed identical sugar compositions with 51–55% glucose, 13–15% galactoronic acid and 13–14% arabinose as the main components. The extension zone was marked by a gradual increase of driselase-digestable polymers (per mm tissue) and a concurrent shift in sugar composition. The massive increase of glucose in the cell wall polymers of the elongation zone is probably caused by cellulose synthesis. The rate of synthesis of cell wall polysaccharides in Holcus was twice as high as that in Deschampsia. The slower-growing Deschampsia has more ferulic acid esterified with cell walls, which might contribute to the slowing of leaf growth. Lignin is not significantly deposited until growth has essentially ceased and is not responsible for the difference in growth rate.  相似文献

Triazole growth retardant chemicals may inhibit stem elongation of woody ornamental species for several years after application. Potted plants of large-leaf Rhododendron catawbiense and Kalmia latifolia were treated with a single spray application of paclobutrazol or uniconazole in the 2nd year from propagation. They were transplanted into the field the next spring. The elongation of stems was measured in the year of application and in the next 2–4 years. Treatments with a wide range of doses were applied in 1991, 1992, or 1995. For all except the most dilute applications, stem elongation was retarded in the year after application. At the highest doses, stem growth was inhibited for 2 years after application. The results were fit to a model of growth regulator action which assumed that stem elongation was inversely related to the amount of growth regulator applied. For paclobutrazol, the dose per plant that inhibited stem elongation half as much as a saturating dose was tenfold that for uniconazole, about 0.5 and 0.05 mg, respectively. For both chemicals, the dose-response coefficient decreased exponentially with time after application, with an exponential time constant of about 2 year−1. A dose of growth regulator which reduced stem elongation by half immediately after application would only inhibit 12% of stem elongation the next year. However, a tenfold greater dose would result in less than half the stem elongation of untreated plants in the next year. Received February 28, 1997; accepted July 8, 1997  相似文献

Abstract

Phylogenetic relationships among European earthstars were inferred using sequence data from the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed region (ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2), partial nuclear large subunit (LSU), and partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (Tef-α). The phylogenetic analyses recovered 11 clades that correlate to 31 morphological species and species groups. A close relationship of Myriostoma coliforme and Geastrum was supported by the molecular data. The genus Radiigera was found to be polyphyletic, and the four species were recovered in different clades within Geastrum. Radiigera bushnellii, R. flexuosa, R. fuscogleba and R. taylori are therefore combined in Geastrum. One of the supported terminal clades is likely to represent an undescribed species that occurs in east central Europe. Notes on the morphology and ecology for each species are given, including a key to the 31 species of earthstars occurring in Europe.  相似文献

Variation in skull size was investigated for three species of rats (kiore –Rattus exulans Peale; ship rat –R. rattus L.; Norway rat –R. norvegicus Berkenhout) which were introduced by humans to various islands in New Zealand and other Pacific islands. Data from seventy-one islands and 882 specimens are examined for evidence of the effects of latitude, island size and interspecific competition among rats and the house mouse (Mus musculus L.) on skull size, using multiple regressions. For R. exulans, skull size increases with latitude as predicted by Bergmann's rule, but no such effect occurs for the other two rats. There was a positive relationship between island size and the number of species inhabiting it, and some species combinations were more likely to occur than others. For example, R. exulans and R. norvegicus were more likely to occur together, while R. rattus and R. exulans were rarely sympatric. R. exulans and R. rattus skull size was negatively correlated with the number of other rodents on the same island. R. exulans skull size increased on smaller islands in some island groups, perhaps because increased density and consequent increased intraspecific competition on smaller islands favours increased body size. This effect is more pronounced in tropical islands (Solomon islands), than in subtropical ones (Hawaiian islands) and less so in temperate New Zealand. Collectively the data demonstrate that rapid evolution of body size in predictable directions can follow within 150 years of the introduction of species to new receiving communities.  相似文献

The effect of body size on spatial resource competition and reproductive isolation was examined in a sister species pair of subtidal triplefin fishes (F. Tripterygiidae) in New Zealand. Ruanoho decemdigitatus and Ruanoho whero have overlapping sympatric distributions and differ in body size, attaining a total length of 12 cm and 9 cm, respectively. R. decemdigitatus was most commonly found in sheltered areas shallower than 5 m, while R. whero was frequently found in sheltered to moderately exposed areas down to 20 m. In sites where the species co-occurred, R. whero was less associated with rock substratum. The effect of body size on substratum use was investigated using laboratory trials based on the field data to test habitat preference and competitive ability in a common setting. Reproductive behaviour was assessed in courtship, mate choice and hybridisation trials. Both species exhibited similar habitat preferences, but large R. decemdigitatus were dominant in inter- and intraspecific contests for the preferred rock habitat, while small R. whero were displaced into less preferred habitats. Courtship behaviour in R. whero was a subset of that displayed by R. decemdigitatus, while no mating behaviour was observed in heterospecific trials. Female R. whero showed a strong preference for smaller males, while female R. decemdigitatus had no preference for male size. Results suggest that body size differences in the Ruanoho pair are consistent with female choice for smaller males in R. whero and competition for habitat in both species. Body size in the Ruanoho species appears to be influenced by conflicting selection pressures that may differ between the species.  相似文献

Abstract. We examined claw characteristics of mud crabs (Eurypanopeus depressus, Rhithropanopeus harrisii) to determine if one crab species was potentially more powerful than the other. We related our findings to the abilities of individuals of each species to open epifaunal mytiliform bivalves (Ischadium recurvum; Mytilopsis leucophaeata) that occur on beds of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) in mesohaline Chesapeake Bay. There were high correlations between claw width or height and claw length, and between claw length and carapace width for both mud crab species. The mechanical advantage or “grip strength’ of the crusher and cutter claws of both species did not change with crab size (carapace width) and did not differ between sexes in each species, nor did the cutter data differ between species. However, individuals of E. depressus had a significantly stronger crusher claw grip than did those of R. harrisii. Data on mechanical advantage for both species were similar to values reported in the literature for members of other xanthid crab species. These values in turn overlapped those reported for calappid, cancrid, majid, and grapsid crabs, and were greater than those of various species of portunid crabs and individual species of fiddler crab, lobster, crayfish, and ghost shrimp. When simultaneously presented with the two species of bivalves, the mud crabs E. depressus chose mussels of M. leucophaeata first and crabs of R. harrisii chose mussels of I. recurvum first about two‐thirds of the time; ultimately, the crabs ate both bivalve species in >50% of the choice experiments. The size range in E. depressus was greater than that in R. harrisii, and crabs of E. depressus opened larger bivalves than did crabs of R. harrisii, although similar‐sized individuals of the two crab species overlapped in their ability to open bivalves of both species. In Mytilopsis leucophaeata, there is probably no size refuge from predation by the mud crabs whereas the larger mussels of I. recurvum do have a refuge in size.  相似文献

The effect of different light sources on in vitro shoot development in Cariniana legalis, an endangered species from the Atlantic Forest, was evaluated. Cotyledonary and apical nodal explants were subjected to light-emitting diode (LED) lamps with different spectral combinations and fluorescent lamps (control). Shoot growth, endogenous contents of free polyamines (PAs) and proteomic profiles were analyzed at 60 days of development. Treatments consisting of white, low-blue and deep-red, with (W/lB/dR/fR) and without (W/lB/dR) far-red spectra, resulted in greater elongation of shoots from cotyledonary nodal explants, and the low-blue and deep-red spectral combination appeared to be a positive factor stimulating shade-avoidance responses. Shoots grown under the W/lB/dR LED exhibited greater elongation and higher contents of free putrescine, spermidine and total free PAs compared to those grown under the fluorescent lamp. Comparative proteomic analysis revealed 15 up- and 41 down-regulated proteins in shoots grown under the W/lB/dR LED lamp when compared to the control. The differentially up-regulated proteins in shoots grown under the LED lamp are related to cell organization and composition, as well as biological regulation processes, whereas proteins related to stress processes were down-regulated. The LED lamp consisting of white, low-blue and deep-red spectra increased shoot elongation in C. legalis, in association with differential accumulation of proteins and PAs, suggesting the relevance of source light on in vitro shoot development in this species.

The development of the ovule, fruit and seed of Xyris spp. was studied to assess the embryological characteristics of potential taxonomic usefulness. All of the studied species have (1) orthotropous, bitegmic and tenuinucellate ovules, with a micropyle formed by both the endostoma and exostoma; (2) a cuticle in the ovules and seeds between the nucellus/endosperm and the inner integument and between the inner and outer integuments; (3) helobial, starchy endosperm; (4) a reduced, campanulate and undifferentiated embryo; (5) a seed coat formed by a tanniferous endotegmen, endotesta with thick‐walled cells and exotesta with thin‐walled cells; and (6) a micropylar operculum formed from inner and outer integuments. The pericarp is composed of a mesocarp with cells containing starch grains and an endocarp and exocarp formed by cells with U‐shaped thickened walls. The studied species differ in the embryo sac development, which can be of the Polygonum or Allium type, and in the pericarp, which can have larger cells in either endocarp or exocarp. The Allium‐type embryo sac development was observed only in Xyris spp. within Xyridaceae. Xyris also differs from the other genera of Xyridaceae by the presence of orthotropous ovules and a seed coat formed by endotegmen, endotesta and exotesta, in agreement with the division of the family into Xyridoideae and Abolbodoideae. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 177 , 619–628.  相似文献

Morphometric parameters of mature leaves (area, venation density, and shape coefficient) and trunks (size and biomass) of two edificatory birch species, Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh., were characterized. These species inhabit a 1600-km transect of the Urals, from forest-tundra to forest-steppe. In both species, the highest trunk biomass was observed in the subzone of south taiga. Trunk parameters and leaf sizes of B. pendula varied in a narrower range than in B. pubescens. As distinct from leaf shape, leaf size was correlated with the average multiyear climate characteristics but not with the weather during a given growth season. In B. pubescens, which range extends wide from its climatic optimum, leaf area was positively correlated with trunk biomass. In B. pendula, growing mainly within the area of its climatic optimum, such correlation was not observed. We concluded that such parameter as mature leaf size could be used for prediction of tree productivity growing outside of the zone of their climatic optimum.  相似文献

Submergence ofRumex crispus L. andR. palustris Sm. stimulates elongation of the youngest petiole. InR. palustris this response can be mimicked partially by exposure to exogenous ethylene. In both species, petiole elongation induced by ethylene and/or submergence is distributed nearly equally over the whole petiole length and is almost completely attributable to increased cell expansion. InR. acetosa L., extension of the youngest petiole is inhibited by submergence of the whole plant. The strongest growth inhibition within the youngest petiole was observed in the most distal parts and is probably the result of reduced cell expansion.  相似文献
