Calcium availability may limit the reproductive output of birds and snail shells are considered to be the main source of calcium in many passerine species. This study of collared (Ficedula albicollis) and pied (F. hypoleuca) flycatchers evaluates calcium intake of a natural diet in Central Europe, and sex differences in the utilization of experimentally supplemented sources of calcium during the entire breeding period in aviary birds. The study provides the first evidence that successful reproduction of these species depends on the availability of woodlice (Isopoda) and millipedes (Diplopoda). Each of these two components provided about 3 times more calcium than the snail shells contained in a natural nestling diet. The breeding performance of aviary birds was poor when only snail shells and the fragments of eggshells were provided in food, i.e., irregular laying, smaller clutches, eggshell defects (25 of 53 eggs), and eggs dried-up during incubation. In contrast, no defective eggshell or dried-up eggs were found and the overall breeding performance increased 2–3 times when woodlice were added to the food. Females increased their intake of woodlice during both the pre-laying and laying periods, and both sexes did so during the nestling period. Both sexes took more woodlice in the evening than in the morning, independent of the nesting stage. Intake by females was low until 4 days before laying the first egg, then increased to the highest level, dropping immediately after laying the last egg. Intake of woodlice by both sexes increased steadily from hatching until the nestling age of about 10–12 days decreasing thereafter, which corresponds with the period of rapid skeletal growth. In contrast, the intake of mealworms increased until the nestling age of 13–14 days leveling off thereafter which corresponds with the growth curve of nestling body mass.Due to an error in the citation line, this revised PDF (published in December 2003) deviates from the printed version, and is the correct and authoritative version of the paper.  相似文献

We developed a new experimental animal model of human multiple myeloma using immunodeficient NOD/SCID/gammac(null) (NOG) mice. A human myeloma cell line, U266, was intravenously inoculated into 20 NOG mice, all of which developed hind leg paralysis and distress around 6 weeks after transplantation. Pathological studies showed that only the bone marrow was infiltrated with U266 cells, and no cells were present in other organs. Osteolytic lesions in cortical bones and loss of trabecular bones were prominent in U266-transplanted NOG mice. In contrast, U266 cells were not detected in CB17scid or NOD/SCID mice 6 weeks after intravenous inoculation. Human IgE, produced by U266 cells, was detected in the serum of U266-transplanted NOG mice by ELISA. The results indicated that this hu-myeloma NOG model might be useful for studying the pathogenesis of myeloma and related osteolytic lesions, and are suggestive of its applicability to the future development of new drugs.  相似文献

Developmental constraints on limb growth in domestic and some wild canids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The domestic dog varies remarkably in limb size. Presumably, such differences in limb size stem from inequities in postnatal specific growth rate. I test this hypothesis by examining the postnatal growth of limb bones (40–250 days post-partum) in four dog breeds of dramatically different adult size; Lhasa Apso, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever and Great Dane. The results show that the limb bones of these four breeds have similar specific growth rates throughout most of postnatal development. Thus, proportionate differences in limb bone length are established during perinatal growth (0–40 days post-partum) or before birth.
Comparisons of postnatal growth in the Great Dane and two wild canids of dramatically different leg length, the Bush dog ( Speothos venaticus ) and the Maned wolf ( Chrysocyon brachyurus ) also show a near congruency of specific growth rate curves. However, despite these similarities, the adult limb proportions of small dogs and small wild canids are different. Dogs also differ from wild canids in the relative variability of gestation time. All dogs have a similar gestation period of 60–63 days which is independent of birth weight, whereas the two are directly related in wild canids. I suggest that small dogs may differ in limb proportions from small wild canids because the latter have a shorter gestation period. Thus, the relative invariability of gestation time in domestic dogs may act as a fundamental constraint on their morphologic variability.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Since GH plays an important role in bone mineralization, and several studies demonstrated the positive influence of a higher calcium intake on bone mass, we studied the effect of calcium supplementation in GHD children during GH therapy. METHODS: 28 prepubertal GHD children, 5.0-9.9 years old, were assigned to two groups: group A (n = 14; 7 females) treated with GH, and group B (n = 14; 7 females) treated with GH + calcium gluconolactate and carbonate (1 g calcium/day per os). Auxological parameters, total bone mineral content (TBMC) and density (TBMD), leg BMC and BMD, lumbar BMD, fat mass (FM) and lean tissue mass (LTM), blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), parathyroid hormone (PTH), osteocalcin (OC) and urinary N-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (NTx) were determined at the start of therapy and after 1 and 2 years of treatment. RESULTS: During the 2 years of the study, TBMC, TBMD, leg BMC and BMD (but not lumbar BMD) increased in both groups of patients, however after 2 years of treatment they were significantly higher in the calcium-supplemented group B than in group A (p < 0.05, for all parameters). At the start of therapy, in both groups of patients percentage FM was higher and total and leg LTM lower than in controls (p < 0.05 for each parameter). Thereafter, FM decreased and LTM increased and after 2 years they were both different from baseline (p < 0.05). After 2 years of treatment, leg BMC and BMD were more positively correlated with regional leg LTM in patients of group B (r = 0.834 and r = 0.827, respectively; p < 0.001) than in patients of group A (r = 0.617 and r = 0.637, respectively; p < 0.05). 25-OHD and PTH levels were in the normal range in all patients at the start and during treatment. OC levels were lower and urinary NTx levels higher in patients than in controls (p < 0.05 for both parameters), either at the start and after 1 year of treatment. After 2 years of treatment, OC levels were significantly higher than at the start of the study (p < 0.05) in both groups of patients, but they were higher in group B than in group A (p < 0.05); on the contrary, urinary Ntx levels were lower in group B than in group A (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In GHD children, treated with GH, calcium supplementation improved bone mass; it may aid in reaching better peak bone mass and in protecting weight-bearing bones, usually completed in childhood to maximum levels, from risk of osteoporosis and fractures later in life.  相似文献

Using 19 year's data from nine study areas at Ghent we investigated the effect of habitat on laying date, and found it to be quite different for Great and Blue Tits. In Great Tits we found a clear gradient in laying dates from urban over suburban to rural habitats. Blue Tits laid earliest in a suburban habitat and latest in a rural habitat. All other areas, including urban, suburban and rural ones, formed one intermediate group. The overall average laying date for the Great Tit, 18.9 April, was slightly earlier than that of the Blue Tit, 19.4 April. In urban areas Great Tits laid significantly earlier than Blue Tits, in optimal oak habitat and in one suburban area Blue Tits laid earlier, whereas in the five remaining areas no significant differences between the two species were found.
We argue that the differences in laying dates, although correlated to temperature, are probably caused by differences in the timing of food availability. We suggest that differences in laying dates of Great and Blue Tits are caused by a different response to environmental variations through differences in feeding ecology.  相似文献

In an effort to explain the rarity of fish bones in the Great Lakes sediments, the degradation of ground fresh fish bones in microcosms containing Lake Erie sediments has been studied. The rapid build-up of phosphorus in the aqueous phase points to the great instability of the bone mineral in these sediments, while the actual analysis of the sediments shows that 10–50% of the added bone was degraded in three weeks. The decomposition rate was independent of the redox conditions of the microcosm, and was biologically mediated. Also, the incongruent dissolution of the bone apatite entailed the secondary formation of vivianite (ferrous phosphate) and other calcium and aluminocalcium phosphates. Calculations suggest that fish debris account for well over 10–20% of the P flux to the sediments in some nearshore areas. Since most of this P is quickly remineralized, the contribution of carrion to the differences in the quality of nearshore and offshore waters of the Lower Great Lakes must remain an intriguing question.  相似文献

To elucidate the relationships between the decrease of mineral contents in human bones and the accumulation of minerals in the other human tissues, the relative contents (RCs) of calcium were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry among human bones, arteries, veins, and cartilages in 27 subjects (17 men and 10 women). These were resected from subjects who died in the age range from 40 to 98 yr old. Calcanei were chosen for analysis of mineral contents in contrast with femoral, popliteal and common carotid arteries, internal jugular veins, and pubic symphysis. It was found that the RCs of calcium in calcanei were agreeable to association with those in both the pubic symphysis and the femoral artery, but they were not agreeable to association with those in the popliteal and common carotid arteries, and the internal jugular veins. This suggests that calcium released from bones is accompanied by accumulations of calcium in the artery and cartilage.  相似文献

1. The metabolism of calcium and cholecalciferol in quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) and chicken (Gallus domesticus) during maturation was correlated to gonadal activity and plasma oestrogen levels. 2. Birds with undeveloped ovaries (immature), developed ovaries but not laying (mature), and after laying 3-8 eggs (laying), were used in the first series. 3. Birds in which egg production had been arrested by Nicarbazin, were used in the second series. 4. Plasma 17 beta-oestradiol and calcium were elevated in the mature bird, with no further change in the laying bird. Kidney 25-hydroxycholecalciferol-1-hydroxylase and intestinal calcium-binding protein increased slightly in the mature bird, whereas they were grossly elevated in the laying bird. 5. Calcium and phosphorus absorption were markedly elevated in the laying bird. 6. No changes were noted in plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, at any stage of maturation. 7. During the arrest of egg production by Nicarbazin, 17 beta-oestradiol level, calcium concentration of plasma, and medullary bone were maintained. Kidney 25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol-1-hydroxylase, intestinal calcium-binding protein and absorption of calcium were strikingly reduced. 8. The results suggest that changes in calcium absorption and cholecalciferol metabolism during maturation in birds are not directly affected by gonadal hormones; they appear to represent an adaptation to the increased calcium needs due to medullary bone formation and, more importantly, to the large losses of calcium imposed by shell formation.  相似文献

Cellular cation was localized with K-pyroantimonate osmium fixation in whole fetal mouse metatarsal bones and in deliberately mechanically damaged specimens. X-ray microprobe analysis of ultrathin sections showed a positive correlation between the concentration of Ca (and Sb) and the amount of electron-dense precipitate. In non-damaged osteoblasts and growth-plate chondrocytes dense precipitate had accumulated along the plasmalemma and the mitochondrial membranes, whereas damaged cells showed the precipitate on round granules in the mitochondrial matrix but not on membranes. Intermediate stages between these two patterns were also found. In a non-calcifying tissue such as liver no membrane-bound precipitate was found in intact cells. However, damaged liver cells showed precipitate-containing mitochondrial granules similar to those in damaged bone cells, but only after incubation of the damaged tissue for 1 h in a Ca-containing balanced salt solution. Freezing of fresh whole bones in liquid N2 before fixation in K-pyroantimonate osmium did not change the precipitate pattern in the damaged cells, but in intact cells it produced a random distribution of precipitate unrelated to membranes. The results are compared with those obtained in other studies on the subcellular localization of calcium and in biochemical studies on membrane versus matrix loading in calcium-accumulating isolated mitochondria.  相似文献

We examined long-term responses in the breeding performance of the Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus to climate change. The study took place in various years from 1970 to 2007. During the study period, mean temperatures in the breeding season of the species increased and precipitation decreased significantly. We found evidence for the significant advancement in both earliest and annual median first-egg-laying dates. This advancement correlated with temperature increases early in the season. The latest first-egg laying dates, however, remained unchanged. Other breeding statistics: clutch size, nest losses, and production of young per nest, did not change significantly over the study period. Precipitation did not affect any of the analysed measures. It is important to note, though, that during dry seasons, the production of young per successful nest was higher. In contrast to some woodland species, the Great Reed Warbler seems to adapt well to climate change by shifting laying dates. The reason for this is probably to optimise food resources.  相似文献

Osteonectin is a minor component of mineralized connective tissues in rat   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Osteonectin is a major glycoprotein of porcine and bovine bones and teeth that is found associated with hydroxylapatite crystal surfaces. From the ability of osteonectin to bind calcium ions, it has been proposed as a possible nucleator of hydroxylapatite crystal formation. Analysis of hydroxylapatite-bound proteins of rat bone and dentine, however, has revealed that osteonectin represents only 2.5 +/- 1.5% of the hydroxylapatite-bound protein in long bones, 0.9 +/- 0.5% in calvariae, and less than 0.1% in incisor dentine of animals of different ages. Further, in vivo pulse-chase studies carried out in young adult rats have shown osteonectin to be synthesized at low levels in these tissues. Similarly, low levels of osteonectin were synthesized by rat calvarial cells in vitro. In contrast, fibroblastic cells from periodontal ligament and gingiva synthesized significantly greater amounts of osteonectin. These studies indicate that the low quantities of osteonectin in rat mineralized tissues are a consequence of low rates of formation rather than being due to rapid turnover. The virtual absence of osteonectin in incisor dentine correlates with the lack of peritubular dentine in rat, whereas the low osteonectin content of rat bones may reflect differences in their structure and biophysical properties compared with bones of larger mammals.  相似文献

Ostriches were filmed running at maximum speed, and forces on the feet were calculated. Measurements were made of the principal structures in the legs of an ostrich. Hence peak stresses in muscles, tendons and bones were calculated. They lay within the range of stresses calculated for strenuous activities of other vertebrates. The ostrich makes substantial savings of energy in running, by elastic storage in stretched tendons. Pachyornis was a flightless bird, much heavier than ostriches and with massively thick leg bones. These bones are shorter than predicted for its estimated body mass, by extrapolation from allometric equations for flying birds. An attempt is made to calculate the stresses that acted in the leg bones in running, for all possible patterns of leg movement. The stresses were probably rather low, unless Pachyornis was capable of running fast. It is argued that the optimum factor of safety for moo leg bones may have been exceptionally high, as a consequence of the absence of predators.  相似文献

Medullary bone (MB) is a special endosteal tissue forming in the bones of female birds during egg laying to serve as a labile calcium reservoir for building the hard eggshell. Therefore, the presence of MB reported in multiple nonavian dinosaurs is currently considered as evidence that those specimens were sexually mature females in their reproductive period. This interpretation has led to further inferences on species‐specific growth strategies and related life‐history aspects of these extinct vertebrates. However, a few studies questioned the reproductive significance of fossil MB by either regarding the tissue pathological or attributing alternative functions to it. This study reviews the general inferences on extinct vertebrates and discusses the primary role, distribution, regulation and adaptive significance of avian MB to point out important but largely overlooked uncertainties and inconsistencies in this matter. Emerging discordancy is demonstrated when the presence of MB vs. trade‐off between growth and reproduction is used for interpreting dinosaurian growth curves. Synthesis of these data suggests that fossil MB was related to high calcium turnover rates but not exclusively to egg laying. Furthermore, revised application of Allosaurus growth data by modelling individual‐based growth curves implies a much higher intraspecific variability in growth strategies, including timing of sexual maturation, than usually acknowledged. New hypotheses raised here to resolve these incongruences also propose new directions of research on the origin and functional evolution of this curious bone tissue.  相似文献

A control group of geese (Anser anser) on a normal calcium diet for egg laying poultry was compared to egg laying geese on a calcium deficient diet. The ultimate compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of femoral cortical bone from each group were determined by compressing right circular cylinders which were 2.4 mm in height and 0.8 mm in diameter. The bending strength and bending modulus of elasticity of tibial cortical bone were determined by three point bend tests on rectangular prisms which were approximately 25 mm by 0.8 mm by 0.8 mm. Bone calcium content and eggshell calcium content were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Blood samples were analyzed for free calcium ion concentration. Histological observations included studies of cross-sectional microradiographs, examinations of cross sections stained by a modified Masson's technique, and a determination of fractional area of voids by quantitative microscopy. The average compressive modulus for the control birds was 12.0 GPa (S.D.: 6.2 GPa) while the ultimate compressive strength was 165 MPa (S.D.: 27 MPa). Calcium deprived birds showed slight, but not statistically significant, decreases in both the compressive modulus and compressive strength. The tibial three point bending modulus for the control birds was 16.5 GPa (S.D.: 2.6 GPa) while the ultimate bending strength was 256 MPa (S.D.: 58 MPa). Once again, slight though not statistically significant decreases in the bending modulus and strength were seen in the geese on the calcium deficient diet. The average calcium content (wt%) of the femora of the control birds was 20.5% (S.D.: 4.3%) and 20.6% (S.D.: 4.8%) for the tibiae. No significant differences were noted in the calcium deprived birds. The average fractional void area for the control bird femoral bone was 12.0% (S.D.: 2.6%) and 9.8% (S.D.: 1.8%) for the tibial bone. Significantly greater fractional void areas were noted in the calcium deficient birds as were profound changes in the macrocellular structure of these bones.  相似文献

Egg laying and shell calcification impose severe extra demands on ionic calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis; especially in birds characterized by their long clutches (series of eggs laid sequentially before a "pause day"). These demands induce vitamin D metabolism and expression. The metabolism of vitamin D is also altered indirectly, by other processes associated with increased demands for calcium, such as growth, bone formation and egg production. A series of intestinal, renal or bone proteins are consequently expressed in the target organs via mechanisms involving a vitamin D receptor. Some of these proteins (carbonic anhydrase, calbindin and calcium-ATPase) are also found in the uterus (eggshell gland) or are believed to be involved in calcium transport in the intestine or kidney (calcium channels). The present review deals with vitamin D metabolism and the expression of the above-mentioned proteins in birds, with special attention to the strongly calcifying laying bird.  相似文献

To study the influence of transplantation conditions on early stages of osteogenesis, isolated calvarial or scapular osteoblasts were injected into the leg or dorsal muscles (free transplants) or implanted after seeding on fragments of devitalized parietal bones (supported transplants) into dorsal muscles. The cross-sections of bone islands formed by calvarial osteoblasts in the different types of transplants were then compared according to their maximal breadth and length. Moreover, the same dimensions of pieces of bone formed by scapular osteoblasts in supported transplants were compared with those of bones formed in free transplants into leg muscles. Finally, comparison of the dimensions of cross-sections of supported transplants of calvarial and scapular osteoblasts was done. Calvarial osteoblasts in dorsal muscles produced a slightly higher percentage of wider and longer islands than those in leg muscles. In supported transplants of calvarial osteoblasts the percentage of narrow bone islands (breadth less than 100 microns) was considerably higher than in free transplants. Similarly, the percentage of narrow cross-sections in bones formed by scapular osteoblasts was higher in supported than in free transplants. In supported transplants of calvarial osteoblasts the percentage of narrow islands was higher than in similar transplants of scapular bone cells. It is suggested that the differences in shape of pieces of bone formed in supported and free transplants reflect the difference in mechanical conditions to which the bone cells were subjected. Furthermore, in supported transplants devitalized parietal bones could form a barrier for diffusion of nutrients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The results from two data sets show that in Great Tits Parus major and Blue Tits P. caeruleus reproduction is influenced by age. In both species, laying dates become earlier while clutch- and brood-size increase between the ages of 1 and 2, but there is no change in nesting success or post-fledging juvenile survival. Great Tits aged 5 or older are 'old' in that laying starts later and nesting success, brood-size and post-fledging juvenile survival decrease. Blue Tits become 'old' 1 year earlier than Great Tits: females aged 4 or older lay later, have a lower nesting success and smaller brood-size, and their young show a decreased post-fledging survival. The effect on laying date, in the Blue Tit, becomes apparent only for females aged 6 and older. It is concluded that ageing in small passerines is to be expected more generally, but that no extrapolations can be made as to the timing of the effect from one species to another.  相似文献

Many bird species lay eggs speckled with protoporphyrin‐based spots, however, for most of them the function of eggshell spotting is unknown. A plausible hypothesis is that protoporphyrin might have a structural function in strengthening the eggshell and is therefore deposited when calcium is scarce. In this study, we experimentally provided Great Tit Parus major females with supplemental calcium to examine its effect on the protoporphyrin‐based maculation of their eggs. In addition, we studied variation in eggshell pigmentation patterns in relation to other egg parameters and laying order. Calcium‐supplemented females laid larger eggs but shell thickness was not significantly affected by the treatment. Calcium supplementation may reduce the time and energy females devote to searching for calcium‐rich material, so that they can collect more nutrients and so lay larger eggs. Furthermore, pigment darkness was associated with egg volume and shape, which suggests that female quality and environmental food availability may also influence the shell pigmentation pattern. Within clutches, later‐laid eggs had larger and darker spots that were distributed more unevenly on the shell surface. This within‐clutch pattern could be explained by the increase in egg volume and egg shape and a decline in shell thickness with egg‐laying order, which characteristics were all related to shell‐spotting pattern. Eggs with a coronal ring had thinner shells, but pigment intensity and spot size were not related to shell thickness. Thus, our results suggest that concentrated spotting distribution may have a mechanical function, supporting the structural‐function hypothesis.  相似文献

Artificially induced cessation of egg laying caused regression of the reproductive tract in hens, as well as changes in circulating concentrations of sex steroids. Hens were bled at several stages during and after artificial moult induced by fasting or overfeeding a diet low in calcium or high in zinc. Hens received a single injection of 200 i.u. of horse LH at Day 0, 7, 21, 35 and 77 (Exp. 1) or Day 0, 8, 23, 35 and 71 (Exp. 2) after start of the treatment to induce moult. Blood samples were taken before and 20, 40 and 60 min (Exp. 1) or 15, 30 and 45 min (Exp. 2) after LH injection. Hens which were fasted or given the diet high in zinc had low plasma progesterone concentrations and the response to LH was reduced or delayed. In hens fed low calcium the reduction in plasma progesterone was less pronounced and the responsiveness to LH was more or less maintained. Conversely, there was no response of oestradiol to LH in laying hens. However, oestradiol concentrations increased in moulting hens after LH injection, due to the high oestradiol secretion from the small white follicles, since all yolky follicles were atretic.  相似文献
