The temperature dependence of plant growth rate is related to the temperature dependence of respiratory metabolism. To determine how the effects of temperature on respiration rate and efficiency are transmitted to growth, this study measured the dark metabolic heat rate ( q ) and CO2 production rate ( R CO2) in excised shoots of seedlings of 14 maize cultivars ( Zea mays L.) at several temperatures. The temperature coefficients of q and R CO2 differ within a given cultivar and also differ among the cultivars. Both q and R CO2 exhibit an isokinetic temperature of 20 ± 3 °C. The measured temperature dependences of q and R CO2 were used to model the temperature dependences of both growth and substrate carbon conversion efficiency. This procedure may be useful in determining the suitability of cultivars for growth in a given climate and in understanding metabolic adaptation to climate.  相似文献

Microsclerotium formation by six isolates of Verticillium dahliae was studied at different temperatures both in vitro and in Arabidopsis thaliana . In vitro mycelial growth was optimal at 25°C, but microsclerotium formation was greatest at 20°C (two isolates) or 15–20°C (one isolate). Seedlings of A. thaliana were root-dipped in a conidial suspension, planted, and either placed at 5, 10, 15, or 25°C, or left at 20°C until the onset of senescence, after which some of the plants were placed at 5, 10, 15, or 25°C. The amount of microsclerotia per unit of shoot weight was assessed in relation to isolate and temperature. The optimal temperature for production of microsclerotia was 15–25°C. Two isolates each produced about 10 times more microsclerotia than each of the other four isolates. For these isolates, high R 2adj.-values of 0.77 and 0.66 were obtained, with temperature and its square as highly significant (P   < 0.001) independent variables. R 2adj.-values for the other isolates varied between 0.28 and 0.39. Moving plants to different temperatures at the onset of senescence led to microsclerotial densities that were intermediate between densities on plants that had grown at constantly 20°C and plants grown at other temperatures. This suggests that vascular colonization rate and rate of microsclerotium formation are similarly affected by temperature. The senescence rate of plants appeared unimportant except for plants grown at 25°C, which showed the highest amounts of microsclerotia per unit of plant weight in the most rapidly senescing plants.  相似文献

We tested the hypotheses that relative activity of the less efficient alternative oxidase (AOX) path changes with diurnal temperature changes, and thus changes carbon use efficiency with temperature. The activities of the alternative and cytochrome oxidase (COX) paths in plant tissues of three species were determined by measuring 18O/16O discrimination and total respiration from 17 to 36 °C. A new, more accurate method for calculating oxygen uptake rate from the mass spectrometry data was developed. Total carbon use efficiency was calculated from the ratio of respiratory heat and CO2 rates measured from 10 to 35 °C. Oxygen isotope discrimination (22.9 ± 0.4‰) and AOX participation were invariant with temperature in leaf tissue of Cucurbita pepo , Nicotiana sativa and Vicia faba , thus falsifying the first part of the hypothesis. Stress responses of respiration at the temperature extremes limited the range for which carbon use efficiency could be accurately measured to 15–30 °C in N. sativa , to 10–25 °C in C. pepo and to 20–30 °C in V. faba . Carbon-use efficiency was invariant at these temperatures in these species, demonstrating that changes in other pathways that would vary carbon-use efficiency were also invariant with temperature.  相似文献

Mode of high temperature injury to wheat during grain development   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
High temperature stress adversely affects wheat growth in many important production regions, but the mode of injury is unclear. Wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Newton) was grown under controlled conditions to determine the relative magnitude and sequences of responses of source and sink processes to high temperature stress during grain development. Regimes of 25°C day/15°C night, 30°C day/20°C night, and 35°C day/25°C night from 5 days after anthesis to maturity differentially affected source and sink processes. High temperatures accelerated the normal decline in viable leaf blade area and photosynthetic activities per unit leaf area. Electron transport, as measured by Hill reaction activity, declined earlier and faster than other photosynthetic processes at the optimum temperature of 25/15 °C and at elevated temperatures. Changes in RUBP carboxylase activities were similar in direction but smaller in magnitude than changes in photosynthesic rate. Increased protease activity during senscence was markedly accentuated by high temperature stress. Specific protease activity increased 4-fold at 25/15 °C and 28-fold at 35/25 °C from 0 to 21 days after initiation of temperature treatments. Grain-filling rate decreased from the lowest to the highest temperature, but the change was smaller than the decrease in grain-filling duration at the same temperatures. We concluded that a major effect of high temperature is acceleration of senescence, including cessation of vegetative and reproductive growth, deterioration of photosynthetic activities, and degradation of proteinaceous constituents.  相似文献

The rates of dry weight increase and respiration of fruits were measured throughout fruit ontogeny at 20, 25 and 30°C in cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. cv. Corona). By maintaining one or five fruits per plant, which strongly affected fruit dry weight but not ontogeny, the effects of fruit size and ontogeny on respiration could be studied separately. The respiration rate per fruit followed a sigmoid curve during fruit ontogeny, while the specific respiration rate (respiration rate per unit dry weight) declined with time after anthesis. The specific respiration rate was almost linearly related to the relative growth rate. The specific respiratory costs for both growth and maintenance were highest in young fruits, but were not affected by fruit size. The average specific respiratory costs for growth and maintenance at 25°C were 3.3–3.9 mmol CO2 g−1 and 4.0 nmol CO2 g−1 s−1, respectively. An increase in temperature had no effect on the specific respiratory costs for growth, while the costs for maintenance increased with a Q10 of about 2. The costs for growth agreed reasonably well with theoretical estimates based on the chemical composition of the fruits but not with estimates based on only the carbon and ash content. The respiratory losses as a fraction of the total carbon requirement of a fruit changed during fruit ontogeny, but were independent of temperature and were similar for slow- and fast-growing fruits. The cumulative respiratory losses accounted for 13–15% of the total carbon requirement.  相似文献

Dormancy and germination of olive embryos as affected by temperature   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Olive seeds do not germinate promptly when placed under favourable conditions, which is a problem in raising young plants for breeding or experimental purposes. In a series of experiments an investigation of the role of temperature in the germination of olive embryos was conducted. Naked, unchilled olive embryos ( Olea europaea L. cv. Chalkidikis), cultured in vitro at 20°C, had a germination capacity of 73%, whereas that of embryos which had previously been chilled at 10°C for 2 or more weeks reached 96%. Intact seeds did not germinate at 20°C unless they had previously been subjected to 10°C for 3 or 4 weeks. Embryos chilled while in the intact seed and excised just before transfer to 20°C, reacted in a similar way to naked embryos, but reached their maximum germination capacity after 4 weeks at 10°C. Under constant temperature conditions the highest germination percentage of embryos was observed at 10 and 15°C and the highest germination rate at 15°C, while a moderate capacity and rate of germination occurred at 20°C, and a very low percentage and rate at 25 and 30°C. Prechilling at 10°C did not affect germination at 15°C, but improved the percentage and the rate of germination at 20, 25 and 30°C. The germination percentages of embryos chilled for 1 or 2 weeks at 10°C and then transferred to 25°C were lower than those of similarly chilled embryos transferred to 20°C. The chilling effect could not be reversed at 25°C when the embryos had been chilled for 3 or more weeks. The results show that olive seeds exhibit a state of dormancy that is caused by factors residing partly in the endosperm and partly within the embryo.  相似文献

The influences of water temperature and feeding regime on otolith growth in Anguilla japonica glass eels and elvers were investigated using individuals reared at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30° C and in fed or unfed conditions at salinity 32 after their otoliths were marked with alizarin complexone (ALC). To eliminate the difficulty of observing the edges of otoliths with optical (OM) or scanning electron (SEM) microscopes, three to 10 individuals were sampled from each tank at 10, 20 and 30 days during the experiment and reared for an additional 10 days at 25° C after their otoliths were marked a second time. Otolith growth and the number of increments were measured using both OM and SEM. Most A. japonica commenced feeding after 10 days at 20–30° C or after 20 days at 15° C, but no feeding occurred at 5 and 10° C. No otolith growth occurred at 5 and 10° C except in two individuals with minimal increment deposition at 10° C. Otolith growth was proportional to water temperature within 15–25° C and not different between 25 and 30° C. At 15, 25 and 30° C, the mean otolith growth rate in fed conditions was higher than in unfed conditions. The number of increments per day was significantly different among water temperatures (0·00–0·01 day−1 at 5 and 10° C, 0·43–0·48 day−1 at 15° C and 0·94–1·07 day−1 at 20–30° C). These results indicated that otolith growth in A. japonica glass eels and elvers was affected by temperature and ceased at ≤10° C under experimental conditions. Hence, future studies analysing the otoliths of wild-caught A. japonica glass eels and elvers need to carefully consider the water temperatures potentially experienced by the juveniles in the wild.  相似文献

Walking speeds and walking activities (walking time divided by total time) of Trichogramma brassicae were determined at 12, 16, 20 and 25°C. Walking speed was measured during a 5-min period, and walking activity over a 4-day period. Both walking speed and walking activity were strongly influenced by temperature. Walking speed increased linearly with the temperature and was twice as high at 20 as at 12°C. At 25°C, walking activity was high during the whole day, at 20 and 16°C it decreased during the afternoon, whereas at 12°C the wasps became most active only at noon or later. At low temperatures, there was a strong individual variation in walking activity. At 25°C, T. brassicae was active most of the time, so the area searched per time unit can only increase at temperatures above 25°C if walking speed increases. At temperatures below 20°C, searching was more restricted by low walking activity than by low walking speed. Even disregarding other effects of temperature, the reduction in walking speed and walking activity at suboptimal temperatures means that T. brassicae can only search half of the area at 20°C, and only one-seventh at 15°C that it can search at 25°C.  相似文献

Reproduction and population parameters of vegetable leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard were measured on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) at seven constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40℃). No eggs were found at 10℃ and flies died after exposure to 40℃. The significantly highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), net reproductive rate (R0) and finite rate of increase (λ) ofL. sativae were obtained at 25℃ as 0.196, 52.452, and 1.216, respectively. The above-mentioned parameters decreased at 15℃ and 135℃ and this reduction at 35℃ was strong. Doubling time (DT) varied significantly with temperature. The shortest doubling time was obtained at 25℃. Mean generation time (T) decreased significantly with increasing temperature between 15℃ and 35℃. Percentage of immature ages in the stable age distribution was more than 95% at all temperatures. Female longevity was greater than male at all temperatures. Liriomyza sativae lived for a long time at 15℃, whereas at 35℃ had lower survival rates. The effect of temperature on reproduction, especially the intrinsic rate of increase of L. sativae would be useful for predicting its longterm population fluctuation over several generations.  相似文献

To model the physiological potential of marine heterotrophic bacteria, their role in the food web, and in the biogeochemical carbon cycle, we need to know their growth efficiency response within a matrix of different temperatures and degrees of organic substrate limitation. In this work, we present one part of this matrix, the carbon growth efficiencies of marine bacteria under different temperatures and nonlimiting organic and inorganic substrate supply. We ran aerobic turbidostats with glucose enriched seawater, inoculated with natural populations of heterotrophic marine bacteria at 10, 14, 18, 22, and 26°C. The average cell-specific growth rates increased with temperature from 1.17 to 2.6 h−1. At steady-state total CO2 production, biomass production [particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON)], and viruslike particle abundance was measured. CO2 production and specific growth rate increased with increasing temperature. Bacterial carbon growth efficiency (BCGE), the particulate carbon produced per dissolved carbon utilized, varied between 0.12 and 0.70. Maximum BCGE values and decreased specific respiration rates occurred at higher temperatures (22 and 26°C) and growth rates. This trend was largely attributable to an increase in POC per cell abundance; when the BCGE was recalculated, parameterizing the biomass as the product of cell concentration and a constant cellular carbon content, the opposite trend was observed.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine how respirationof soybeans may respond to potential increases in atmosphericcarbon dioxide concentration and growth temperature. Three cultivarsof soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr.), from maturity groups 00,IV, and VIII, were grown at 370, 555 and 740cm3m-3carbon dioxideconcentrations at 20/15, 25/20, and 31/26°C day/night temperatures.Rates of carbon dioxide efflux in the dark were measured forwhole plants several times during exponential growth. Thesemeasurements were made at the night temperature and the carbondioxide concentration at which the plants were grown. For thelowest and highest temperature treatments, the short term responseof respiration rate to measurement at the three growth carbondioxide concentrations was also determined. Elemental analysisof the tissue was used to estimate the growth conversion efficiency. This was combined with the observed relative growth rates toestimate growth respiration. Maintenance respiration was estimatedas the difference between growth respiration and total respiration.Respiration rates were generally sensitive to short term changesin the measurement carbon dioxide concentration for plants grownat the lowest, but not the highest carbon dioxide concentration. At all temperatures, growth at elevated carbon dioxide concentrationsdecreased total respiration measured at the growth concentration, with no significant differences among cultivars. Total respirationincreased very little with increasing growth temperature, despitean increase in relative growth rate. Growth respiration wasnot affected by carbon dioxide treatment at any temperature, but increased with temperature because of the increase in relativegrowth rate. Values calculated for maintenance respiration decreasedwith increasing carbon dioxide concentration and also decreasedwith increasing temperature. Calculated values of maintenancerespiration were sometimes zero or negative at the warmer temperatures. This suggests that respiration rates measured in the dark maynot have reflected average 24-h rates of energy use. The resultsindicate that increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrationmay reduce respiration in soybeans, and respiration may be insensitiveto climate warming. Glycine max L. Plasticity in growth rate may be driven by behavioural and physiological mechanisms. Although these underlying mechanisms have direct implications for the importance of ecological and physiological costs associated with rapid growth, the contribution of behaviour and physiology to temperature-mediated plasticity in growth rate has largely been neglected. We studied the temperature-dependence of growth rate and its underlying behavioural and physiological mechanisms in two congeneric damselfly species that differ in latitudinal distribution. Larvae were reared from the egg stage at three temperatures (17°C, 22°C and 27°C). Within each species, growth rates showed a quadratic response curve with an optimum at 22°C. Behaviour, as measured by food intake, and physiology, as measured by growth efficiency and heartbeat as proxy for metabolic rate, jointly contributed to this temperature-induced plasticity in growth rate. At each temperature, growth rates were higher in the northern species. In line with the few other studies that compared northern and southern populations, both an increased food uptake and growth efficiency caused this pattern. Together with previous studies that focused on the population level, our results tentatively suggest that not only the latitudinal patterns in growth rate but also the mechanistic basis are similar at the species and at the population level.  相似文献

The growth and activity of juvenile Japanese eels Anguilla japonica in different pigmentation stages from the glass eel to the elver stage were studied in the laboratory at 15, 20 and 25° C. The growth and activity of the eels were significantly influenced by both temperature and fish size. Growth rate generally declined with increasing fish size, and fish were least active and experienced a low growth during the pigmenting stage at all temperatures. They were nocturnal and spent significantly more time moving (swimming, feeding and moving over the substratum) at 20 and 25° C than at 15° C at night within each pigmentation stage. Accordingly, they grew significantly faster at 20 and 25° C than at 15° C throughout the study. The development of pigmentation appeared to be dependant on water temperature but not on fish size. This study suggested that the growth and activity of juvenile Japanese eels were positively correlated, because fish were least active and grew slowest at low temperature (15° C) or during the pigmenting stage at all temperatures.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and diet on the specific growth rate and food consumption of 1-summer-old Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were studied. Fish were reared singly in aquaria at six different constant temperatures (5, 9, 13, 16, 18 and 20°C). They were fed Neomysis integer or commercial pelleted food for 2 weeks and growth and food consumption were measured. In both experiments, growth rate increased to an optimum at 15°C. Growth rates were high in the range 13–18°C, with no significant ( P >0·05) differences between temperatures. No significant ( P> 0·05) differences in growth were found between fish at 9 and 20°C. There were no effects of diet on size-adjusted growth rates. The growth efficiency decreased with increasing temperature in both treatments, but the decrease was faster in the Neomysis treatment. Charr seemed to compensate for the high water content (79·5%) of Neomysis by having a higher food intake.  相似文献

Artificially fertilized eggs and yolk-sac larvae of a freshwater tropical/subtropical fish Clarias gariepinus receiving no external food were incubated at 22, 25 and 28° C until full yolk resorption. Developmental time, size and matter composition (CHNS-O Analyzer and ashing) were assessed at egg fertilization, hatching and yolk resorption; respiration was measured every 4–5 h. The course of acceleration of C. gariepinus embryonic developmental rate with temperature ( Q10 dev) was compared over the temperature range to those of Cyprinus carpio and Oncorhynchus mykiss ; they differed greatly, but were similar when compared on the basis of effective temperatures specific to each fish. Specific growth rates for energy (88, 150 and 183% per day at 22,25 and 28° C, respectively) as well as the conversion efficiencies of egg energy (64, 71 and 68%, respectively) and protein (71, 78 and 76%, respectively) in C. gariepinus larval tissues were higher than those known for the endogenous feeding period of coldwater and temperate fish species. In C. gariepinus at the end of yolk resorption, the carbon percentage and caloric values of dry weight, size (in terms of dry matter, minerals, protein and energy per larva) and transformation efficiencies were lowest at 22° C, highest at 25° C and had slightly decreased at 28° C. A tentative mechanism which leads to the positive or negative response of body size to temperature over the viable temperature range is defined.  相似文献

The influence of temperature (10°C and 25°C) on the survival and growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kloeckera apiculata was examined in mixed and pure cultures during fermentation in apple juice. The growth reached by S. cerevisiae did not seem to be affected by temperature and the presence of K. apiculata . However, the growth and survival of K. apiculata , both in single and mixed cultures, were substantially enhanced at 10°C. The highest amount of ethyl acetate was produced by K. apiculata in pure culture at 10°C. Nevertheless, this concentration was lowest when both yeasts were fermented together at 10°C and 25°C.  相似文献

Gut evacuation and absorption efficiency of walleye larvae   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Gut evacuation and absorption efficiency in zooplanktivorous walleye Stizostedion vitreum larvae (10–19 mm; 0.53–6.8 mg dry weight) were examined in the laboratory. The decline in dry weight of whole digestive tract contents was examined at 15, 20, and 25) C in discontinuous feeding larvae. The observed relationship between short-term evacuation rate and gut fullness indicated that evacuation approximated most closely an exponential decline. When gut evacuation rate, R , was calculated as the slope of loge gut fullness v . time there were significant effects of temperature and walleye size on R . Gut evacuation rate was higher at 20° C than at 15 or 25° C and declined with increasing walleye dry weight. Absorption efficiency at 20° C was examined by qualitative analysis of food and faeces. Apparent digestibility, D a, of crustacean zooplankton increased with gut retention time and declined with walleye dry weight. Maximum D a was estimated to be 79% of organic matter from food retained in the gut for 6 h.  相似文献

Episodic increases in temperature of 5°C above 20° C, over 48 h or declines in pH of 1·0 unit from pH 7·0 reduced survival of yolk-sac and feeding-stage larvae of American shad Alosa sapidissima . Over 16 days all measures of survival, growth, and production were more favourable at each higher temperature in the 15–25° C range. More favourable responses were also obtained at the higher prey level (500 v . 50 Artemia nauplii l-1) and at the higher pH (7·5 v . 6·5). Combinations of high temperature and high prey levels, at pH 7·5, led to highest larval production. Little growth or production occurred at 15° C, regardless of pH or prey level. The effect of pH was strong with respect to survival, but weak with respect to growth. In attempts to restore American shad populations by larval stocking, release times and sites can be critical to optimize survival and eventual returns. Releases of larvae potentially will be most effective when made at temperatures >20° C, pH>7·0, and prey levels >50 1-1. These conditions are most likely to occur in Maryland tributaries of Chesapeake Bay between mid-May and early June.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the growth rate, protein pattern and fatty acid composition of Yersinia enterocolitica strain W22703 pYV+, its plasmidless isogenic derivative W22703 pYV- and four recent field isolates was examined.
The growth rate was clearly influenced by presence or absence of the virulence plasmid: pYV- strains grew consistently faster than pYV+ strains. This difference in growth rate was high at 30–35°C, moderate at 1–10°C and 25°C, but hardly significant at 15–20°C.
Increasing the growth temperature above 25°C resulted in the induction of the 220 kDa virulence plasmid-encoded Yop1 protein. In the 1–20°C range no obvious temperature- or plasmid-related differences in protein patterns could be detected.
The fatty acid composition showed a clear temperature-dependent change: with all strains the degree of saturation was low at 1°C and gradually increased with raising temperatures. All strains had similar fatty acid patterns, except one of the field isolates which showed aberrant C16 : 1 and cyclic fatty acid contents in the 5–25°C and 15°C ranges respectively. With strain W22703, the presence or absence of the virulence plasmid did not significantly alter the fatty acid pattern.  相似文献

Three soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr.) cultivars (Maple Glen, Clark and CNS) were exposed to three CO2 concentrations (370, 555 and 740 μmol mol−1) and three growth temperatures (20/15°, 25/20° and 31/26°C, day/night) to determine intraspecific differences in single leaf/whole plant photosynthesis, growth and partitioning, phenology and final biomass. Based on known carboxylation kinetics, a synergistic effect between temperature and CO2 on growth and photosynthesis was predicted since elevated CO2 increases photosynthesis by reducing photorespiration and photorespiration increases with temperature. Increasing CO2 concentrations resulted in a stimulation of single leaf photosynthesis for 40–60 days after emergence (DAE) at 20/15°C in all cultivars and for Maple Glen and CNS at all temperatures. For Clark, however, the onset of flowering at warmer temperatures coincided with the loss of stimulation in single leaf photosynthesis at elevated CO2 concentrations. Despite the season-long stimulation of single leaf photosynthesis, elevated CO2 concentrations did not increase whole plant photosynthesis except at the highest growth temperature in Maple Glen and CNS, and there was no synergistic effect on final biomass. Instead, the stimulatory effect of CO2 on growth was delayed by higher temperatures. Data from this experiment suggest that: (1) intraspecific variation could be used to select for optimum soybean cultivars with future climate change; and (2) the relationship between temperature and CO2 concentration may be expressed differently at the leaf and whole plant levels and may not solely reflect known changes in carboxylation kinetics.  相似文献
