An emerging hemorrhagic fever in China caused by a novel bunyavirus SFTSV

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome(SFTS) is an emerging hemorrhagic fever in rural areas of China and is caused by a new bunyavirus,SFTSV,named after the disease.The transmission vectors and animal hosts of SFTSV are unclear.Ticks are the most likely transmission vectors and domestic animals,including goats,dogs,and cattle,are potential amplifying hosts of SFTSV.The clinical symptoms of SFTS are nonspecific,but major symptoms include fever,gastrointestinal symptoms,myalgia,dizziness,joint pain,chills,and regional lymphadenopathy.The most common abnormalities in laboratory test results are thrombocytopenia(95%),leukocytopenia(86%),and elevated levels of serum alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase,creatine kinase,and lactate dehydrogenase.The fatality rate for SFTS is 12% on average,and the annual incidence of the disease is approximately five per 100000 of the rural population.

Identification of potential cross-protective epitope between a new type of coronavirus(2019-nCoV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome virus

Recently,a new type of unknown virus causing severe acute res-piratory infection was reported in Wuhan city,Hubei province,China(WHO,2020b).Infection of this virus was first reported in December 2019,and origin of the virus was traced back to a large seafood/wide animal market in Wuhan city.The serious clinical symptoms of the viral infection,including fever,dry cough,dys-pnea,and pneumonia,may result in progressive respiratory failure and even death.Moreover,the quick spread of the virus has caused an epidemic in China,as well as infection cases worldwide.The whole-genome sequence of Wuhan new virus(WH-Human_.1)was first released on January 10,2020(Zhang,2020),followed by additional ones released in Global Initiative on Sharing All Influ-enza Data(GISAID)(Shu and McCauley,2017).Later,this new virus was determined and announced as a new type of coronavirus(CoV;2019-nCoV)by the World Health Organization(WHO,2020a).

Biophysical and biorheological studies on the precursor cells at different stages

Splenic erythroblasts were obtained from mice during the acute disease caused by anemia-inducing virus (FVA). They were cultured in a medium containing EPO, BSA and so on. We studied their biomechanical and hemorheological behavior after 12 h, 24 h and 48 h. The results showed obvious changes in their electrophoretic mobility, osmotic fragility, membrane fluidity and membrane viscoelastic properties with the development of erythroblast. The changes were associated with the interactions of the protein and lipid and the elements of the membrane.     

Interaction between Rice stripe virus Disease- Specific Protein and Host PsbP Enhances Virus Symptoms

Rice stripe virus （RSV） causes severe diseases in Oryza sativa （rice） in many Eastern Asian countries. Diseasespecific protein （SP） of RSV is a non-structural protein and its accumulation level in rice plant was shown to determine the severity of RSV symptoms. Here, we present evidence that expression of RSV SP alone in rice or Nicotiana benthamiana did not produce visible symptoms. Expression of SP in these two plants, however, enhanced RSV- or Potato virus X （PVX）- induced symptoms. Through yeast two-hybrid screening, GST pull-down, and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays, we demonstrated that RSV SP interacted with PsbP, a 23-kDa oxygen-evolving complex protein, in both rice and N. benthamiana. Furthermore, our investigation showed that silencing of PsbP expression in both plants increased disease symptom severity and virus accumulation. Confocal microscopy using N, benthamiana protoplast showed that PsbP accu- mulated predominantly in chloroplast in wild-type N. benthamiana cells. In the presence of RSV SP, most PsbP was recruited into cytoplasm of the assayed cells. In addition, accumulation of SP during RSV infection resulted in alterations of chloroplast structure and function. Our findings shed light on the molecular mechanism underlying RSV disease symptom development.
