The adult morphology of the Australian Limnadopsis shows some remarkable differences to that of other Limnadiidae. These differences are not reflected in its larval development. In Limnadopsis parvispinus, larval development comprises six stages. In stages I and II only the three naupliar appendages are present: the antennule as a small bud, the biramous antenna as the main swimming organ, and the mandible. The antennal protopod bears two endites, the proximal naupliar process and a more distal endite. In stage III a bifid naupliar process (in earlier stages not bifid) and the first signs of the carapace and trunk limb anlagen (undifferentiated rudiments) appear. In stage IV the carapace anlagen become more pronounced. The number of trunk limb anlagens increases to five, and differentiation has commenced. In stage V the first five pairs of trunk limbs are differentiated to varying degrees. The anterior-most four pairs of trunk limbs are subdivided into five endites, a small endopod, an exopod and an epipod. The bivalved carapace covers the anterior-most limbs. In larval stage VI the carapace is larger and the trunk limbs are further differentiated. A general pattern in the sequence of larval stages is the increasing number of sensilla on the antennules. From the last larval to the first postlarval stage, a significant change in morphology takes place. The trunk limbs are now used for swimming. Typical larval organs are much smaller than in the last larval stage. A comparison with other representatives of the Limnadiidae shows a high degree of correspondence, with most differences explained by the heterochronous appearance of characters during development. Five to seven stages are described for all studied Limnadiidae, including one particular stage in which four fully developed setae, a bifid naupliar process and the first signs of carapace anlagen are present. These characters are found in stage III in L. parvispinus, Limnadia stanleyana, Eulimnadia texana, and Imnadia yeyetta but in stage IV in E. braueriana and L. lenticularis. Based on a comparison of the larval stages of six limnadiid and one cyzicid species, we conclude that at least six naupliar stages belong to the limnadiid ground pattern.

According to recent literature, five of the six known Austrian conchostracan species are extinct. However, interim results of a current study on large freshwater branchiopods in Austria show that five species still occur at a restricted number of sites in the Pannonian region of Lower Austria. The clam shrimps Leptestheria dahalacensis and Eoleptestheria ticinensis were rediscovered in May 1994 in the flood plains of the river Morava near Marchegg. Imnadia yeyetta and Cyzicus tetracerus have been known to the authors in the same region since 1981, and 1992, respectively. Limnadia lenticularis occurs in the flood plains of the rivers Morava and Danube. Lynceus brachyurus, the only Austrian representative of the Laevicaudata, was not found and most probably got extinct. All Austrian clam shrimp species are considered to be endangered. Main threats are agricultural activities and artificial changes of the hydrologic conditions. Conservational measures are discussed for their effectivity.

As a part of a project to compare phylogenetically the larval or embryonic development of all major taxa of the Branchiopoda (Crustacea), the larval development of the Japanese spinicaudatan clam shrimp Eulimnadia braueriana Ishikawa, 1895, is described. Seven naupliar stages are recognized, based mainly on significant morphological differences between them, but in one case, on size alone. The seven stages range in length from 156 µm to 760 µm. Nauplius 1 is nonfeeding with incompletely developed and nonfunctional feeding structures. Nauplius 2 has apparently functional feeding structures, including a well-developed mandibular gnathobase, setulate protopodal endites of the antennae, and setules on various setae involved in swimming and food manipulation. Nauplius 3 is morphologically identical to Nauplius 2, but more than 50% larger. In nauplius 4, the coxal endite (naupliar process) of the antennae develops a bifid tip. Nauplius 5 has a lateral pair of primordial carapace lobes, and the first 4–5 pairs of trunk limb buds are weakly developed, making the anterior part of the trunk wider than the posterior. In nauplius 6, five pairs of trunk limb buds are visible externally and a small carapace has appeared, reaching approximately to trunk limbs 2; also, the pair of large buds behind the mandibles in previous stages has become divided into a large, anterior, setose bud and two smaller, posterior buds. The identities of these structures as either paragnaths or maxillules/maxillae remain uncertain. In nauplius 7, about six pairs of trunk limb buds are visible externally. The general morphology of the nauplius larvae of E. braueriana is much like those of the well-known Limnadia lenticularis (Linnaeus, 1758) and Eulimnadia texana Packard, 1871, including an elongate, lanceolate labrum; however, because of various heterochronies, the correspondence between the larval sequences of these species is not perfect. There is even less correspondence with the 5-stage larval development reported for Limnadia stanleyana King, 1855, and the spatulate labra of that species and Jmnadia spp. are different from those of other known limnadiid nauplii. The larvae of E. braueriana possess many typical (and synapomorphic) branchiopod features, such as the general morphology of the appendages involved in feeding and the mode of trunk limb development, while the small buds of the first antennae and the exact number and development of the parts of the trunk limbs are typical for the Spinicaudata.

To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality level, metazoan parasites were examined in 157 specimens of chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.), sampled in four lowland water courses (northern Italy): Ticino river (unpolluted), Naviglio Pavese Canal (slightly polluted), Lambro river near the Merone village (polluted) and near Monza (severely polluted). Dactylogyrus vistulae, Paradiplozoon ergensi, Bucephalus polymorphus, Acanthocephalus anguillae and larval stages of Tylodelphys clavata were found in all the sampled sites. The distribution of Lamproglena pulchella and Pomphorhynchus laevis was limited to the unpolluted and slightly polluted river sectors, while Asymphylodora tincae, glochidia, along with larval stages of Diplostomum spathaceum, were absent in the severely polluted site. The variability of the calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity), the degree of interactivity among parasites, as well as parameters of species richness and diversity suggest that the structure of parasite communities are affected by the water contamination level.

The sawfly, Diprion pini L., is a pest of Pinus in Europe and is mainly found on P. sylvestris L. and P. nigra laricio Poiret. The relative importance of female oviposition capacity and behaviour, egg development, and larval survival on a new host plant was measured on 11 pine species. Five were natural host plants and six non-host plants, five of which are not indigenous to Europe. Oviposition choice tests showed that females discriminated between the pine species. Egg and larval development also differed between pine species. However, the female choice was not linked with hatching rate and larval development. Results of biological tests clearly indicated that there were different response patterns of D. pini life stages in relation to pine species, and these patterns were the same with insects of four different origins. We discuss the importance of each potential barrier to colonisation of a new host.

Sensillae on the antennae of the Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata are described using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy and compared with SEM observations of antennal sensilla inL. haldemani andL. texana. In all the three species, 13 distinct sensillar types were identified with a higher density of sensilla in the more polyphagous species,L. decemlineata than in the moderately host specificL. haldemani and the highly host specificL. texana. Cuticular specializations and the predominance of olfactory sensilla are discussed in relation to host specificity in the three species.

The complete larval development (four zoeae and one megalopa) of Clibanarius aequabilis and C. erythropus, reared under laboratory conditions, is described and illustrated. The larval stages of the two northeastern Atlantic Clibanarius species cannot be easily differentiated. Their morphological characters are compared with those of other known Clibanarius larvae. The genus Clibanarius is very homogeneous with respect to larval characters. All Clibanarius zoeae display a broad and blunt rostrum, smooth abdominal segments and an antennal scale without a terminal spine. Beyond the second zoeal stage, the fourth telson process is present as a fused spine, and the uropods are biramous. In the fourth larval stage all species display a mandibular palp. The Clibanarius megalopa presents weakly developed or no ocular scales, symmetrical chelipeds, apically curved corneous dactylus in the second and third pereiopods, and 5–11 setae on the posterior margin of the telson. Apart from the number of zoeal stages, Clibanarius species may be separated, beyond the second zoeal stage, by the telson formula and the morphology of the fourth telson process.

A semi-field experiment was carried out in two peach orchards in northern Italy to assess mortality due to predators and parasitoids on the exotic coccinellid Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in comparison with the native coccinellid Adalia bipunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The experiments were conducted in cages to avoid the possible escape of the exotic ladybird (not yet established in Italy). Two kinds of cage experiments were included: ‘exclusion cages’ (access by walking predators impeded) and ‘free cages’ (walking predators free to enter). The cages, containing all the stages of the two ladybird species, were placed in two localities and left for 24 h. All ladybird stages used for the semi-field experiments came from a laboratory rearing. The eggs of H. axyridis experienced less mortality than those of A. bipunctata. The ant workers were the most frequent predators in ‘free cages’ but A. bipunctata cannibalism on eggs was also detected. Larvae of both coccinellid species were predated equally but larval predation of L1 and L2 was higher in comparison to predation of L3 and L4. Pupae and adults of both exotic and native ladybirds were never attacked by predators. Predation on younger larval stages was higher in the ‘free cages’ in comparison with ‘exclusion cages’. No ladybird parasitisation was observed. The ‘free cage’ technique seems to provide a standardised and realistic estimation of predation impact but more studies are needed to evaluate ladybird parasitisation in semi-field conditions.

When populations of native predators are subsidized by numerically dominant introduced species, the structure of food webs can be greatly altered. Surprisingly little is known, however, about the general factors that influence whether or not native predators consume introduced species. To learn more about this issue, we examined how native pit-building ant lions (Myrmeleon) are affected by Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) invasions in coastal southern California. Compared to areas without L. humile, invaded areas contained few native ant species and were deficient in medium-sized and large bodied native ants. Based on these differences, we predicted that Argentine ants would negatively affect ant lion larvae. Contrary to this expectation, observational surveys and laboratory growth rate experiments revealed that Myrmeleon were heavier, had longer mandibles, and grew more quickly when their main ant prey were Argentine ants rather than native ants. Moreover, a field transplant experiment indicated that growth rates and pupal weights were not statistically different for larval ant lions reared in invaded areas compared to those reared in uninvaded areas. Argentine ants were also highly susceptible to capture by larval Myrmeleon. The species-level traits that presumably make Argentine ant workers susceptible to capture by larval ant lions—small size and high activity levels—appear to be the same characteristics that make them unsuitable prey for vertebrate predators, such as horned lizards. These results underscore the difficulties in predicting whether or not numerically dominant introduced species serve as prey for native predators.

The larval secretions of the Chrysomelinae (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) are generally considered to be chemical defense substances against predators and parasites. The experiments presented in this paper provide evidence that the range of activity of these larval secretions also extends to interactions between different conspecific developmental stages and between competing phytophagous species. Four chrysomeline species were tested: Gastrophysa viridula De Geer, Phaedon cochleariae (F.), Plagiodera versicolora (Laich.), and Phratora vitellinae (L.). In the latter species, we did not test the intraspecific effect of the natural larval secretion, but the activity of its purchasable main component, salicylaldehyde (synthetic larval secretion). In G. viridula, Ph. cochleariae, and Ph. vitellinae the (synthetic) larval secretions act as oviposition deterrents against conspecific females. An investigation of the persistence of the oviposition-deterring activity of the larval secretion in G. viridula revealed that the deterrent effect is lost after 20 to 26 hours. In each of the four tested species the (synthetic) larval secretion deters feeding of conspecific adults. Since P. versicolora and Ph. vitellinae may occur on the same host plant (e.g. the willow Salix fragilis L.), the interspecific effect of the larval secretion between competing phytophagous species was examined in these two willow leaf beetles. The larval secretions of both species and salicylaldehyde, respectively, act as interspecific repellent and feeding deterrent against adults of the other species.

The larval stages ofAblattaria arenaria were provided with 4 different snail species:Monacha syriaca (Ehrenberg),Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki),Candidula sp., andZebrina eburnea (Pfeiffer) to determine if the prey species affected developmental time and food preference of larvae. Functional response of each larval stage ofA. arenaria was also tested for increasing density ofX. derbentina, the most common prey species found in association withA. arenaria locally. The developmental time of each larval stage did not show any statistical difference when fed with different snail species. The total developmental time from egg hatch to adult emergence was 19.0, 19.1, 18.0 and 21.4 days for prey speciesM. syriaca, X. derbentina, Candidula sp., andZ. eburnea, respectively. When prey was offered to larvae either as a single species or as combination of several species,M. syriaca was the most preferred. The prey least consumed wasCandula sp. when prey was given separately, andZ. eburnea was least preferred when other prey species were present in the arena. The 3rd larval stage did not eat anyZ. eburnea if other prey species were present. The amount of prey consumed by the 1st larval stage did not show any statistical differences with increasing density ofX. derbentina. But the response of 2nd and 3rd larval stages was very similar to each other although the amount of prey they consumed was very different. They both showed a rapid increase in consumption rate at early densities, then a negatively but slowly accelerated rise to plateaus at higher densities, a type-2 functional response curve. All larval stages were very sensitive to starvation. Mortality started after the 2nd day, and all individuals of all larval stages were dead by the 5th day.

Individual variation in two species of host plants (thistle,Cirsium kamtschaticum, and blue cohosh,Caulophyllum robustum) of the herbivorous ladybird beetleEpilachna pustulosa was examined under laboratory conditions for their acceptability to adult beetles as a food resource, for adult preference and for larval performance. When clones of these plants were subjected to non-choice tests using posthibernating female beetles, there was found to be significant intraspecific variation among clones in terms of their acceptability, but interspecific variation was not detected. Significant intraspecific as well as interspecific variation were frequently detected in the two host plants when clones of these plants were subjected to choice tests using posthibernating female beetles; the magnitude of interspecific plant variation for beetle preference is not necessarily larger than that of intraspecific plant variation. Individual variation across plant species with respect to beetle larval performance was also significant. A positive correlation between adult preference and larval performance is suggested across the two taxonomically remote host plant species, thistle and blue cohosh, although this needs further investigation.

The dynamics of the fungal symbionts in the gallery system and the mycangia of the ambrosia beetle,Xylosandrus mutilatus, were studied in relation to its life history using both isolation experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the galleries,Ambrosiella sp. was predominant during the larval stages but its relative dominance gradually decreased during the development of the larvae. In contrast, yeasts (mainlyCandida sp.) andPaecilomyces sp. dominated continuously in the galleries after eclosion.Ambrosiella sp. was consistently stored in the mycangia in all adult stages, except in the teneral and overwintering adults when the other fungi were dominant. No fungal spores occurred in the mycangia of the adult beetles reared under aseptic conditions from the pupal stage, while onlyAmbrosiella sp. was stored in those reared from the teneral-adult stage. These results suggest that: (i) Xmutilatus is associated with at least three fungal species, among whichAmbrosiella sp. is the most essential food resource for development of the broods; (ii) immediately after eclosion, new female adults may take at least four associated fungal species, with no or incomplete selection, into their mycangia from the walls of the cradles; and (iii) conditions may well be produced in the mycangia of both matured and dispersing beetles whereby only the spores ofAmbrosiella sp. can proliferate.

The biology and parasitoid complex of the lily leaf beetle (LLB), Lilioceris lilii Scopoli, and two congeneric species were investigated in Europe, as part of a biological control program against the LLB in North America. Eggs, larvae, and adults of L. lilii were collected in several countries in Europe, on both cultivated and wild Lilium spp., and reared in the laboratory and under natural conditions. Parasitoids were obtained and their biologies were studied. Similar investigations were made in Switzerland on two closely related species Lilioceris tibialis (Villa) found on wild Lilium spp., and Lilioceris merdigera (L.) on several other Liliaceae. The three species are strictly univoltine. Adults overwinter and lay eggs on leaves in early spring. The three beetle species have four instars, which were characterized by their head capsule width. Pupation occurs in a cocoon in the soil. Adults emerge in late summer and start feeding before reaching overwintering sites. Egg and larval parasitoids were obtained. Eggs of L. lilii and L. merdigera were parasitized by the mymarid Anaphes sp., a multivoltine species that needs alternate hosts for overwintering. Larvae were heavily attacked by several parasitoids, among which the most abundant were three ichneumonids, Lemophagus pulcher (Szepligeti), L. errabundus (Gravenhorst), and Diaparsis jucunda (Holmgren), and the eulophid Tetrastichus setifer Thomson. All four parasitoid species were found in the three beetles and in most European regions, but strong variations were observed in their relative abundance among hosts and geographic regions. Three of the four main larval parasitoids are strictly univoltine, whereas L. pulcher has a partial second generation. Lemophagus spp. are frequently parasitized by the ichneumonid hyperparasitoid Mesochorus lilioceriphilus Schwenke. Further details of the biology of the parasitoids are described, and their potential as biological control agents is discussed.

Larvae ofPhyllopertha horticola L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) cause increasing problems on sports fields and lawns in NW-Europe. A biological control programme using insect parasitic nematodes is being developed. This paper contains the results of bioassays with various species and isolates of the nematode generaHeterorhabditis andSteinernema. In bioassays in small pots with moist sand, most of the nematode isolates gave 30–60% mortality against each of the three larval stages. The susceptibility of the grubs for nematode infection generally increased with larval development.H. bacteriophora, H. heliothidis, H. megidis, a DutchHeterorhabditis isolate NLH-E87.3 andS. glaseri 326 showed the highest mortality rates, with nearly 100% mortality of third instar grubs. The DutchHeterorhabditis isolate NLH-E87.3 andS. glaseri 326 were selected as candidates for further studies on their potential as biological control agents forP. horticola grubs in the field.

The effects of Copper on the life-cycle of two crustacean isopods, Asellus aquaticus (L.) and Proasellus coxalis Dollf., are studied. ST50 indicates that females and males are differently sensitive in comparison with juveniles. The two species do not show differences in sensitivity in the range of 0.01–15 mg·1-1 between adults and juveniles. The effect of 0.005 mg·1-1 Copper sulphate was strongest on embryonic and larval stages. Ecological implications are discussed.

The concentration and seasonal dynamics of the major energy storage components, triglycerides and glycogen, were measured in two species of mayfly (Rhithrogena semicolorata and Ephemera danica) with contrasting life cycle strategies living in a small mountain stream. E. danica is a burrowing, semivoltine collector-gatherer; R. semicolorata is univoltine and scrapes periphyton from stones. This is the first publication which focuses on the role of metabolic energy sources during the larval life span of two mayfly species until the larvae emerge. Although triglycerides are the major energy reserve in both species (>84% of total energy storage) throughout the whole larval development their seasonal dynamic differed considerably. In R. semicolorata the triglyceride concentration declined during the last weeks prior to emergence in both sexes. The same pattern was found in female larvae of E. danica, but not in male E. danica. It is suggested that females use triglycerides in the last larval stages for egg maturation, which is completed in the last larval instar. In male E. danica the triglyceride concentrations remained high until emergence, presumably due to their high energy demands as adults for their swarming flights. Glycogen concentrations did not show such a difference between species and sexes. Its significance as a storage substrate for energy is rather low; however, concentrations decreased in both species and sexes prior to emergence.

The biology and temperature-dependent development of Laricobius kangdingensis Zilahi-Balogh and Jelínek (Coleoptera: Derodontidae), a newly described predator of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae Annand (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) were investigated and compared with a related HWA predator, L. nigrinus Fender, that has already been released. As with other Laricobius species, there are four larval instars. The female to male sex ratio was 1:1.1. Mean lifetime fecundity per female was 196.4 eggs and 97.9 eggs for the parental generation (P1) and first filial generation (F1), respectively. Developmental rates at 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18°C were studied between fall 2002 and spring 2004 and used to determine low temperature development thresholds for the egg (2.8°C), and larval (1.6°C) stages. The egg and larval thresholds are lower than those observed for L. nigrinus. Laricobius kangdingensis individuals completed development only at 12 and 15°C; however, the adults did not emerge from aestivation after pupation. Our results suggest that L. kangdingensis may be a promising addition to the complex of predators currently being reared for control of HWA. Laricobius kangdingensis is long-lived, exhibits high fecundity, and can complete development on North American HWA. However, further studies will be necessary to secure its clearance for release, and the source of high mortality in the laboratory must be identified in order to improve its survival for mass-rearing. Mud crabs, Scylla spp. , are commercially important in many Indo-Pacific countries. The larval development of mud crabs has been reported previously as five zoeal and one megalopal stages. This paper reports larval rearing experiments that revealed variability in larval developmental stages in the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, one of four mud crab species. In addition to normal five zoeal stages, an alternative pathway of developing through six zoeal stages was observed for the crab. There were evidences suggested that the appearance of the additional Zoea-VI larvae was associated with unfavourable dietary conditions, including poor quality of diet, inadequate quantity of dietary supply and a period of starvation for newly hatched larvae. Based on exuviae and larval specimens, the morphology of the additional Zoea-VI larvae was described.
