The colonisation of activated zeolites (i.e. clinoptilolites) as carriers for microorganisms involved in the biogas process was investigated. Zeolite particle sizes of 1.0-2.5 mm were introduced to anaerobic laboratory batch-cultures and to continuously operated bioreactors during biogas production from grass silage. Incubation over 5-84 days led to the colonisation of zeolite surfaces in small batch-cultures (500 ml) and even in larger scaled and flow-through disturbed bioreactors (28 l). Morphological insights were obtained by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis based on amplification of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA fragments demonstrated structurally distinct populations preferring zeolite as operational environment. via sequence analysis conspicuous bands from SSCP patterns were identified. Populations immobilised on zeolite (e.g. Ruminofilibacter xylanolyticum) showed pronounced hydrolytic enzyme activity (xylanase) shortly after re-incubation in sterilised sludge on model substrate. In addition, the presence of methanogenic archaea on zeolite particles was demonstrated. 相似文献

Dried grass silage (GS) was pre-treated at different NaOH loading rates (1%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% by volatile solids (VS) mass in grass silage) and temperatures (20 °C, 60 °C, 100 °C and 150 °C) to determine effects on its bio-degradability in terms of the hydrolysis yield and degradation of ligno-cellulosic materials for biogas production. At 100 °C and the four NaOH loadings, up to 45% of the total COD was solubilised and up to 65.6%, 36.1% and 21.2% of lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose were removed, respectively; biological methane production potentials obtained were 359.5, 401.8, 449.5 and 452.5 ml CH?/g VS added, respectively, being improved by 10-38.9% in comparison with untreated GS. VS removals following anaerobic digestion were 67.6%, 76.9%, 85.3%, 95.2% and 96.7% for untreated GS and GS treated at the four NaOH loadings, respectively. 100 °C and the NaOH loading rate of 5% is recommended as a proper GS pre-treatment condition. 相似文献

NIRS-aided monitoring and prediction of biogas yields from maize silage at a full-scale biogas plant applying lumped kinetics 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this study was to apply near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), available biogas plant data and lumped degradation kinetics to predict biogas production (BPr) of maize silage. A full-scale agricultural biogas plant was equipped with NIRS-metrology at the feeding station. Continuously NIR-spectra were collected for 520 d. Substrate samples were analyzed by means of feedstuff analysis. Biogas potential of the samples was calculated from the laboratory analysis results and for a sample-subset practically assessed by “Hohenheim biogas tests”. NIRS-regression-models for all mentioned parameters were calibrated. Continuously gathered spectra, NIRS-models, actual plant-feeding data and degradation kinetics were used to calculate time-series of theoretically expectable BPr. Results were validated against measured gas quantity. Determination coefficients between calculated and measured BPr were up to 58.2%. This outcome was mainly due to the positive correlation between BPr and input amount since the substrate was very homogeneous. The use of NIRS seems more promising for plants with stronger substrate heterogeneity. 相似文献

Comparative evaluation of biogas production from dairy manure and co‐digestion with maize silage by CSTR and new anaerobic hybrid reactor 下载免费PDF全文
This study aimed to investigate potential methane production through anaerobic digestion of dairy manure and co‐digestion with maize silage. Two different anaerobic reactor configurations (single‐stage continuously stirred tank reactor [CSTR] and hybrid anaerobic digester) were used and biogas production performances for each reactor were compared. The HR was planned to enable phase separation in order to improve process stability and biogas production under higher total solids loadings (≥4%). The systems were tested under six different organic loading rates increased steadily from 1.1 to 5.4 g VS/L.d. The CSTR exhibited lower system stability and biomass conversion efficiency than the HR. The specific biogas production of the hybrid system was between 440 and 320 mL/gVS with 81–65% volatile solids (VS) destruction. The hybrid system provided 116% increase in specific biogas production and VS destruction improved by more than 14%. When MS was co‐digested together with dairy manure, specific biogas production rates increased about 1.2‐fold. Co‐digestion was more beneficial than mono‐material digestion. The hybrid system allowed for generating methane enriched biogas (>75% methane) by enabling phase separation in the reactor. It was observed that acidogenic conditions prevailed in the first two compartments and the following two segments as methanogenic conditions were observed. The pH of the acidogenic part ranged between 4.7 and 5.5 and the methanogenic part was between 6.8 and 7.2. 相似文献

Effect of pig manure to grass silage ratio on methane production in batch anaerobic co-digestion of concentrated pig manure and grass silage 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Anaerobic co-digestion of concentrated pig manure (PM) with grass silage (GS) at five different PM to GS volatile solid (VS) ratios of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3 and 0:1 was evaluated by examining operation stability and methane (CH4) production potentials. The highest specific CH4 yields were 304.2 and 302.8 ml CH4/g VS at PM to GS ratios of 3:1 and 1:1, respectively. The digestion systems failed at the ratio of 0:1. The lag phase lasted 29.5, 28.1, 24.6 and 21.3 days at the ratios of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3, respectively. The daily methane yield was linearly correlated with the acetic acid concentration, indicating methane production was probably associated with acetoclastic methanogenesis. The hydrolysis constant linearly decreased with increasing the fraction of GS in the feedstock. This study recommends applying the PM to GS ratio of 1:1 in practice due to a high specific methane yield and a short lag phase. 相似文献

A recent review paper considers the potential of algal biomass as a source of liquid and gaseous biofuels, but there are a number of issues concerning the results and conclusions presented. These include the biomass energy values, which in some cases are unusually high; and the apparent production of more energy from processed biomass than is present in the original material. The main causes for these discrepancies include the choice of empirical formula for protein; confusion between values calculated on a total or volatile solids basis; and the lack of a mass balance approach. The choice of protein formula also affects predicted concentrations of ammonia in the digester. These and other minor errors contribute to some potentially misleading conclusions which could affect subsequent interpretations of the overall process feasibility. 相似文献

The aims of this work were to determine the specific biogas yields of steam-exploded sugarcane straw and bagasse as well as to estimate their energy potential under Brazilian conditions. Steam-explosion was carried out under different time and temperature conditions. The specific biogas yields were analyzed in batch-tests according to VDI 4630.Results have shown that steam-explosion pre-treatment increased the specific biogas yields of straw and bagasse significantly compared to the untreated material. The utilization of these by-products can contribute to 5% of the total energy consumption and thereby higher energy independence in Brazil. Further efforts in defining the optimum pretreatment conditions with steam-explosion as well as implementing this technology in large scale plants should be made. 相似文献

Effects of ensiling, silage additives and storage period on methane formation of biogas crops 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Effects of the ensiling process, storage periods of up to 1 year and several chemical and biological silage additives on biomethanation were assessed for maize, sorghum, forage rye and triticale with the aim to identify optimised conditions for silage production of crops used as feedstock in biogas plants. Ensiling, prolonged storage and biological silage additives showed positive effects on methane yield of up to 11%. These could be attributed to increases in organic acids and alcohols during ensiling. A regression model including acetic acid, butyric acid and ethanol accounts for 75-96% of the variation in methane yield. Storage periods of up to 1 year for properly ensiled crops could be possible without losses in methane production, considering the increase in methane yield and the losses of dry matter during this period. However, taking storage losses into account silage additives showed little effect on methane production. 相似文献

Improving biogas production from protein-rich distillery wastewater by decreasing ammonia inhibition
Xia Jiang Junpei Hayashi Zhao Yong Sun Lu Yang Yue Qin Tang Hiroshi Oshibe Noriko Osaka Kenji Kida 《Process Biochemistry》2013,48(11):1778-1784
A large quantity of protein-rich distillery wastewater is produced during the process of bio-ethanol production from kitchen waste. It is difficult, however, to treat protein-rich distillery wastewater by anaerobic digestion due to ammonia inhibition. In this study, a novel method was investigated to reduce ammonia inhibition during thermophilic anaerobic digestion through the recirculation of water-washed biogas into the headspace (R1 system) or liquid phase (R2 system) of the reactors. The results show that the method greatly improved biogas production from distillery wastewater. R2 system achieved stable biogas production at a higher organic loading rate (OLR) of 4.0 g VTS/L/d than R1 system at 3.0 g VTS/L/d. At the same OLR, we observed a higher biogas production rate but lower accumulation of NH4+ and volatile fatty acids in the reactor, and higher ammonia absorption rate in the water tank of R2 system than R1 system. The better performance of R2 system could be attributed to the more efficient removal of ammonia from liquid phase. In addition, adjusting the C/N ratio of distillery wastewater from 9.0 to 11.4 significantly enhanced the maximum OLR from 3.0 to 7.0 g VTS/L/d in R1 system. 相似文献

Production of electricity from samples obtained during anaerobic digestion of grass silage was examined using single-chamber air-cathode mediator-less microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The samples were obtained from anaerobic reactors at start-up conditions after 3 and 10 days of operation under psychrophilic (15 °C) and mesophilic (37 °C) temperatures. Electricity was directly produced from all samples at a concentration of 1500 mg COD L−1. Power density obtained from the samples, as a sole carbon source, ranged from 56 ± 3 W m−3 to 31 ± 1 W m−3 for the mesophilic and psychrophilic samples, respectively. Coulombic efficiencies ranged from 18 ± 1% to 12 ± 1% for the same samples. The relationship between the maximum voltage output and initial COD concentration appeared to follow saturation kinetics at the external resistance of 217 Ω. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was over 90% and total phenolics removal was in the range of 30-75% for all samples tested, with a standard amount of 60 mg L−1 total phenolics removed for every sample. Our results indicate that generating electricity from solution samples of anaerobic reactors utilizing grass silage is possible, opening the possibility for combination of anaerobic digestion with MFC technology for energy generation. 相似文献

Microbial communities involved in biogas production from wheat straw as the sole substrate were investigated. Anaerobic digestion was carried out within an up-flow anaerobic solid-state (UASS) reactor connected to an anaerobic filter (AF) by liquor recirculation. Two lab-scale reactor systems were operated simultaneously at 37 °C and 55 °C. The UASS reactors were fed at a fixed organic loading rate of 2.5 g L−1 d−1, based on volatile solids. Molecular genetic analyses of the bacterial and archaeal communities within the UASS reactors (digestate and effluent liquor) and the AFs (biofilm carrier and effluent liquor) were conducted under steady-state conditions. The thermophilic UASS reactor had a considerably higher biogas and methane yield in comparison to the mesophilic UASS, while the mesophilic AF was slightly more productive than the thermophilic AF. When the thermophilic and mesophilic community structures were compared, the thermophilic system was characterized by a higher Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio, as revealed by 16S rRNA gene (rrs) sequence analysis. The composition of the archaeal communities was phase-separated under thermophilic conditions, but rather stage-specific under mesophilic conditions. Family- and order-specific real-time PCR of methanogenic Archaea supported the taxonomic distribution obtained by rrs sequence analysis. The higher anaerobic digestion efficiency of the thermophilic compared to the mesophilic UASS reactor was accompanied by a high abundance of Firmicutes and Methanosarcina sp. in the thermophilic UASS biofilm. 相似文献

The future of anaerobic digestion and biogas utilization 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
One of the common tendencies of animal production activities in Europe and in developed countries in general is to intensify the animal production and to increase the size of the animal production units. High livestock density is always accompanied by production of a surplus of animal manure, representing a considerable pollution threat for the environment in these areas. Avoiding over-fertilization is not only important for environmental protection reasons but also for economical reasons. Intensive animal production areas need therefore suitable manure management, aiming to export and to redistribute the excess of nutrients from manure and to optimize their recycling. 相似文献

A biological pretreatment with new complex microbial agents was used to pretreat corn straw at ambient temperature (about 20°C) to improve its biodegradability and anaerobic biogas production. A complex microbial agent dose of 0.01% (w/w) and pretreatment time of 15 days were appropriate for biological pretreatment. These treatment conditions resulted in 33.07% more total biogas yield, 75.57% more methane yield, and 34.6% shorter technical digestion time compared with the untreated sample. Analyses of chemical compositions showed 5.81-25.10% reductions in total lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents, and 27.19-80.71% increases in hot-water extractives; these changes contributed to the enhancement of biogas production. Biological pretreatment could be an effective method for improving biodegradability and enhancing the highly efficient biological conversion of corn straw into bioenergy. 相似文献

Different feeding approaches were applied to a 5 l anaerobic digester in order to improve the biogas production. During operation, the reactor was fed with a mixture (9.7% w/v total solids (TS) and 7.6% w/v volatile solids (VS) in average) of pig manure with fish oil waste and waste from bentonite of edible oil filtration process, at different intervals of 24, 12 and 4 h at 15 days of hydraulic retention time. Production and quality of the biogas were practically constant at 183.7 ml (average) of biogas per gram of volatile solids available in the reactor per day, and the best biogas composition was 73.6% v/v CH4 and 26.4% v/v CO2. 相似文献

Potential errors in the quantitative evaluation of biogas production in anaerobic digestion processes 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Errors that are commonly made in the quantification of biogas from anaerobic digestion experiments were investigated. For liquid displacement gasometers where a barrier solution separates the biogas and the atmosphere, inaccuracy due to gas diffusion was examined experimentally. Acidified saturated saline solution was the most suitable barrier solution, as biogas characteristics changed least with time. Using acidified or tap water caused considerable biogas losses and should therefore be avoided where biogas is stored before measurement.Errors associated with volume calculation from three common liquid displacement gasometer types were investigated theoretically. Corrections that must be made to obtain gas volumes at standard temperature and pressure when using this equipment are discussed. Regarding experimental errors, gasometer designs where displaced liquid is weighed to determine the volume are the most versatile since errors depend mainly upon balance sensitivity. Using liquid heights to calculate volume requires appropriate sizing of the gasometer relative to the volume of gas measured. The calibration of a low flow gas meter was investigated and an approximately linear variation with flow rate was found; hence in situ calibration is advised for this type of instrument. Correction for atmospheric conditions should be performed in real time to reduce errors. 相似文献

Decoupling the retention time of easily degradable and persistent substances using ultrafiltration membranes increases biogas production yield 下载免费PDF全文
Anja Schreiber Gerd‐Rainer Vollmer Uta Breuer Michael Nelles 《Engineering in Life Science》2016,16(1):60-66
The decoupling of the retention time of easily degradable and persistent substances relieves the degradation process from inhibitors and increases the biogas yield. Anaerobic digestion of maize silage was investigated in a pilot‐scale plant with a coupled ultrafiltration membrane. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the influence of the membrane‐based relief of the degradation process and the increase of the retention time of persistent substances. For that purpose, the fermenter content was separated into solid and liquid fractions. The solid fraction was recirculated to the fermenter for longer retention time and higher substrate degradation rates. The fermentation process was improved by the removal of the liquid fraction and adding volatile fatty acids. The results showed an increase of the biogas yield by 7.2% in comparison to the anaerobic digestion without membrane filtration. 相似文献

Feasibility of biogas production from anaerobic co-digestion of herbal-extraction residues with swine manure 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this work was to examine the feasibility of biogas production from the anaerobic co-digestion of herbal-extraction residues with swine manure. Batch and semi-continuous experiments were carried out under mesophilic anaerobic conditions. Batch experiments revealed that the highest specific biogas yield was 294 mL CH4 g−1 volatile solids added, obtained at 50% of herbal-extraction residues and 3.50 g volatile solids g−1 mixed liquor suspended solids. Specific methane yield from swine manure alone was 207 mL CH4 g−1 volatile solid added d−1 at 3.50 g volatile solids g−1 mixed liquor suspended solids. Furthermore, specific methane yields were 162, 180 and 220 mL CH4 g−1 volatile solids added d−1 for the reactors co-digesting mixtures with 10%, 25% and 50% herbal-extraction residues, respectively. These results suggested that biogas production could be enhanced efficiently by the anaerobic co-digestion of herbal-extraction residues with swine manure. 相似文献

Here, we present the results of lab‐scale experiments conducted in a batch mode to determine the biogas yield of lipid‐rich waste and corn silage under the effect of stirring. Further semi‐continuous experiments were carried out for the lipid‐rich waste with/without stirring. Additionally, it was analyzed how the starter used for the batch experiment influences the digestion process. The results showed a significant stirring effect on the anaerobic digestion only when seed sludge from a biogas plant was used as a starter. In this case, the experiments without stirring yielded only about 50% of the expected biogas for the investigated substrates. The addition of manure slurry to the batch reactor as part of the starter improved the biogas production. The more diluted media in the reactor allowed a better contact between the bacteria and the substrates making stirring not necessary. 相似文献

Modelling mono-digestion of grass silage in a 2-stage CSTR anaerobic digester using ADM1 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper examines 174 days of experimental data and modelling of mono-digestion of grass silage in a two stage wet process with recirculation of liquor; the two vessels have an effective volume of 312 L each. The organic loading rate is initiated at 0.5 kg VS m−3 d−1 (first 74 days) and subsequently increased to 1 kg VS m−3 d−1. The experimental data was used to generate a mathematical model (ADM1) which was calibrated over the first 74 days of operation. Good accuracy with experimental data was found for the subsequent 100 days. Results of the model would suggest starting the process without recirculation and thus building up the solids content of the liquor. As the level of VFA increases, recirculation should be employed to control VFA. Recirculation also controls solids content and pH. Methane production was estimated at 88% of maximum theoretical production. 相似文献
