Overweight among black females is almost two times as frequent as among white females. Genetics, caloric intake, and physical activity have been identified as possible explanatory factors. This study assessed the differences in physical activity and body composition in 76 white and 66 black adult females. Black women had significantly higher (p=.0001) percent body fat (32.2 ± 7.1) than white women (27.7 ± 6.5) with a similar difference in weight (4.4 kg) approaching significance (p=.055). Physical activity was assessed using a structured 24-hour recall instrument. A purposive sampling design was implemented to control for age, education and occupation. A summary physical activity value unit for the 24-hour period revealed a significantly greater mean value for white females (41.93 + 4.7) than for black females (40.01 ± 3.9) suggesting white females were more physically active (p=.02) although this was not a function of biracial differences in play/recreation and exercise/sport type of activities. Although both black and white females were found to be sedentary (MET value ± 2) over 90 percent of the time, black women were significantly more sedentary (p=.03). Biracial differences in discretionary non-exercise oriented activities may contribute to different rates of overweight observed between black and white women.  相似文献

Although the fertility decline in the black population in the Mississippi Delta between the late 1870's and early 1930's closely paralleled that of the national black population, it rose much more dramatically in the 1940's and 1950's to almost 1880 levels. Given the especially rural and oppressed conditions of blacks there, the initial decline seems puzzling. Low fertility rates in the 1930's reflected a large proportion of childless females. Investigations of changing contraceptive usage and mate exposure suggest both were minor components at most. Several physiological impairments were investigated including dietary deficiences, malaria, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Evidence suggests STD played the major role, facilitated by nutritional and other health problems. Models relying heavily on those developed by McFalls and McFalls (1984) suggest 50-80 percent of the decline could have been due to the spread of STD. Age-specific birth rates for different periods and post-World-War-II fertility increases seem consistent with this finding.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a postweaning low-calcium diet on later obesity and explore the underlying mechanisms. Ninety-six male rats were weaned at 3 weeks of age, fed standard (STD: 0.50% calcium, n=48) and low-calcium (LC: 0.15% calcium, n=48) diets for 3 weeks, and then fed the standard diet for a 3-week washout period successively. Finally, the STD rats were divided into STD control and high-fat diet (HFD) groups, and the LC ones into LC control and LC+HFD (LCHF) groups. The STD and LC rats were fed the standard diet, while the HFD control and LCFD ones were fed a high-fat diet for 6 weeks to induce obesity. During the three feeding periods, adenosine-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its responsive proteins phospho-acetyl-coA carboxylase, carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 and uncoupling protein 3 were persistently down-regulated in the LC group (decreased by 18%, 24%, 18% and 20%, respectively) versus the STD group, and these effects were significantly more pronounced in the LCHFD group (decreased by 21%, 30%, 23% and 25%, respectively) than the HFD group by a later high-fat stimuli, causing more fat and body weight in adulthood. However, lipolysis enzymes, serum leptin, insulin and lipids were not significantly affected until the body weight and fat content changed at 15 weeks of age. The results suggest that the low-calcium diet after weaning promotes rat adult-onset obesity induced by high-fat diet, which might be achieved by programming expressions of genes involved in AMPK pathway.  相似文献

The black form of the leopard is shown to be inherited as an autosomal monogenic recessive to the spotted wild type. Pairings of black animals inter se have a significantly smaller litter size than other possible pairings. Two reasons are offered for this: (1) that black animals may be slightly more inbred than the spotted or (2) black animals may be more prone to pre-natal loss than the spotted. The significance of the latter possibility is briefly discussed in relation to the persistence of the spotted/black polymorphism for areas of South-east Asia.  相似文献

Various Naegleria strains were examined to determine the possible origin and significance of membrane-bound black bodies that were found in all exponentially growing cell populations. The bodies, 40–80 nm in diameter, were distributed randomly in the cytoplasm of Naegleria with ultrastructural features typical of trophozoites. No evidence was obtained that the contents of the black bodies were synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and packaged by membranous components, which could be a primitive “Golgi complex” in these amoebae. Examination of cells in various stages of encystment indicated that at least some of the cyst wall material was synthesized and packaged by the rough ER. After condensation into amorphous granules in the cisternae, the cyst wall material appeared in vesicles of the rough ER; these were frequently seen in close proximity to the cell membrane in the vicinity of developing cyst wall. Amorphous granules (~100 nm in diameter), which had variable densities and did not appear to be membrane bound, were seen in the cytoplasm of encysting cells. The substance of these granules also seemed to be incorporated into the cyst wall. The membrane-bound black bodies appeared to be destroyed in lysosomal elements during encystment. The membrane-bound black bodies were concluded to be characteristic of trophozoites and unrelated to encytment of Naegleria.  相似文献

Flavonoids among others are found in tea. Many of them were shown to exhibit antioxidative action in vitro. We examined the effect of a 1-month consumption of 500 ml black tea containing 2.0 mg quercetin. While single tea consumption 2 h after finishing the intake did not affect any of the parameters (8-epi-PGF(2 alpha) in plasma and serum, 11-DH-TXB(2) and ADP-induced platelet aggregation) examined at all, 1-week consumption and even more than 1 month regular tea intake significantly decreased most of the parameters. The effect was somewhat more pronounced for females as compared with males, the values for 11-dehydro-thromboxane B(2) (11-DH-TXB(2)) and ADP-induced aggregation reached the level of significance in females only. These data show that regular daily black tea consumption for 1 month improves platelet function and decreases thromboxane and 8-epi-PGF(2 alpha) to a varying extent indicating a reduced in vivo oxidation injury.  相似文献

We developed a multiplex PCR (mPCR) assay to simultaneously detect Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Corynebacterium spp. and seudomona aeruginosa. This method employs a single tube and multiple specific primers which yield 200, 281, 346, 423, 542, and 1,427 bp PCR products, respectively. All the PCR products were easily detected by agarose gel electrophoresis and were sequenced to confirm the specificity of the reactions. To test this method, DNA extracted from urine samples was collected from 96 sexually transmitted disease or prostatitis patients at a local hospital clinical center, and were subjected to the mPCR assay. The resulting amplicons were cloned and sequenced to exactly match the sequences of known pathogenic isolates. N. gonorrhoeae and Corynebacterium spp. were the most frequently observed pathogens found in the STDs and prostatitis patients, respectively. Unexpectedly, P. aeruginosa was also detected in some of the STD and prostatitis samples. More than one pathogen species was found in 10% and 80.7% of STD and prostatitis samples, respectively, indicating that STD and prostatitis patients may have other undiagnosed and associates. The sensitivity of the assay was determined by sing purified DNA from six pathogenic laboratory strains and revealed that this technique could detect pathogenic DNA at concentrations ranging from 0.018 to 1.899 pg/ul. Moreover, the specificities of this assay were found to be highly efficient. Thus, this mPCR assay may be useful for the rapid diagnosis of causative infectious STDs and prostatitis. useful for the infectious STDs and prostatitis.  相似文献

目的:调查本地区5436例性病(STD)门诊患者流行病学特征,并对患者心理状况进行分析。方法:对2012年1月~2014年12月本地区3家医院性病门诊5436例患者(观察组)的5种生殖器疱疹(GH)、生殖道衣原体感染(GCI)、尖锐湿疣(CA)、淋病(GU)、梅毒(SYP)常见性传播疾病的基本情况、流行病学特征进行记录分析。采用自制心理测评量表对其中250例STD患者的心理状况进行评估,并与250例同期门诊治疗的一般感冒患者(对照组)进行比较。结果:2012~2014年门诊5种常见STD患者就诊人数呈上升趋势,以GU下降最为明显,GCI逐渐上升较为明显;STD患者发病主要集中于26~35岁,以司机、低学历及未婚人群居多。心理测评结果显示,STD患者的抑郁、焦虑、回避治疗、性欲障碍等因子分均高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P0.05);交往障碍、社会攻击等因子分与对照组比较差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。结论:本地区STD患病以性活跃年龄人群、司机、学历低及未婚人群为主,临床上治疗性病的同时,应重视STD患者的心理健康。  相似文献

Flowers that mimic carrion or faeces exhibit unusual traits, the evolution and functional significance of which remain poorly understood. Odour is an important pollinator attractant, but visual traits and interactions between visual and scent traits have seldom been considered. We studied pollination of the “carrion flowers” of Ceropegia mixta [= Orbea variegata], analysed floral traits and used manipulative experiments to explore the contributions of visual and scent traits to pollinator attraction. Flowers were pollinated primarily by Musca domestica (Muscidae), with lesser contributions by Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae flies. The floral odour (analysed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) was dominated by oligosulphides and phenol. Comparison of floral and abiotic background colours (analysed using reflectance spectrometry) using a fly colour vision model suggested that flowers would be chromatically indistinguishable from the background. Comparison of fly arrival rates at concealed (but still scented) versus exposed flowers showed that flies can locate flowers without visual cues, but visitation was higher when the flowers were visible. Experiments using model flowers with odour supplied by real flowers (to explore the significance of dark flowers and dark spots on a pale background, which both occur frequently in flowers that mimic carrion or faeces) showed that scented black flowers attracted significantly more flies than similarly scented human-yellow flowers, while the presence or size of black spots on the corolla had no effect on the attraction of flies. Our results suggest that there is a visual component to fly attraction, but some traits, such as the mottled patterning, may not have evolved to enhance pollinator attraction.  相似文献

Molecule-targeted therapies are being widely developed and deployed, but they are frequently less effective in clinical trials than predicted based upon preclinical studies. Frequently, only a single model or genetic background is utilized using diets that are not relevant to that consumed by most cancer patients, which may contribute to the lack of predictability of many preclinical therapeutic studies. Inhibition of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in colorectal cancer was used to investigate potential causes for low predictive values of many preclinical studies. The efficacy of the small molecule EGFR inhibitor AG1478 was evaluated using two mouse models, Apc(Min/+) and azoxymethane (AOM), both sexes on three genetic backgrounds, C57BL/6J (B6) and A/J (A) inbred strains and AB6F1 hybrids, and two diets, standard chow (STD) or Western-style diet (WD). AG1478 has significant anti-tumor activity in the B6-Apc(Min/+) model with STD but only moderately on the WD and in the AOM model on an A background with a WD but not STD. On the F1 hybrid background AG1478 is effective in the Apc(Min/+) model with either STD or WD, but has only moderate efficacy in the AOM model with either diet. Sex differences were also observed. Unexpectedly, the level of liver EGFR phosphorylation inhibition by AG1478 was not positively correlated with inhibition of tumor growth in the AOM model. Model-dependent interactions between genetic background and diet can dramatically impact preclinical results, and indicate that low predictive values of preclinical studies can be attributed to study designs that do not account for the heterogeneous patient population or the diets they consume. Better-designed preclinical studies should lead to more accurate predictions of therapeutic response in the clinic.  相似文献

We have recently reported that the "in situ" myocardial concentrations of the active form of the Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex (PDHa) were significantly decreased in hearts obtained from normal rats fed for 3 weeks on an isocaloric sucrose rich (63%) diet (SRD) when compared to age matched controls fed on the standard laboratory chow (STD). Since, on the one hand SRD rats present glucose intolerance and impaired "in vivo" insulin action and, on the other hand the effects of insulin on the interconversion of heart PDH remains a controversial matter, we found it relevant to study the effects of insulin on the PDH complex in the "in vitro" perfused (Langendorff technique) heart preparations obtained from SRD rats. After a 35 minute perfusion period with 5.5 mM glucose as the only nutrient in the perfusate, PDHa as a percentage of total PDH was found to remain significantly lower in SRD hearts (M +/- SEM 32.6 +/- 2.3) when compared to STD hearts (68.3 +/- 4.6, P less than 0.05) in spite of comparable total PDH activities in both groups of animals. Although the addition of insulin to the perfusate (20 mu/ml) resulted in a significant increase in the percentage of PDHa (45.8 +/- 3.4) of SRD heart, values attained still remained significantly lower than those obtained in STD controls (67.5 +/- 3.6; P less than 0.05). Simultaneously, the addition of insulin to the perfusate, significantly reduced the Acetyl-CoA/CoASH ratio in SRD hearts although this ratio remained still much higher than those observed in STD controls under the same experimental conditions.  相似文献

In a study of why a sample of women, aged 45-64 and registered with a group practice in Edinburgh, attended or did not attend the Edinburgh Breast Screening Clinic demographic, aetiological, social, and perceptual characteristics of attenders and non-attenders were compared. Similar proportions of attenders and non-attenders knew the chance of a breast lump being cancer and were aware of the benefits of early diagnosis and treatment. The study, however, suggests that non-attenders saw the screening clinic as a place of risk while the attenders saw screening in a positive light: 79% of non-attenders as compared with 36% of attenders said that they were afraid of cancer being found, and most women attended either to reassure themselves that they had not got breast cancer or to receive early treatment if they had. Furthermore, 72% of non-attenders as compared with 13% of attenders were anxious that their lives would be disrupted if cancer were found at the screening clinic. There may well be an important irreducible element to non-attendance due to attitudinal factors; the ethical implications of attempting to eliminate this require careful consideration.  相似文献

Red and black spruce and their hybrids can be determined by morphological indices; however, the criteria are somewhat subjective and increasingly difficult to use at higher elevations. Although the chromosome number is identical (2n = 24), red spruce has twice as much nuclear DNA (48 pg) than black spruce (24 pg) and thus the species and their hybrids can also be separated by cytophotometry. This is relevant to spruce decline studies because black spruce is much more resistant to high elevation environmental stresses, both natural and anthropogenic. It also has implications for the effect of climatic changes on the composition of high elevation spruce-fir forests because red spruce can outcompete black spruce under more mesic conditions. Four elevation transects sampling spruce on the east and west sides of Mount Washington (New Hampshire) and Camels Hump (Vermont) and a single transect on the southwest side of Whiteface Mountain (New York) were made to investigate the degree of hybridization and introgression between these two species. A positive correlation was found between increased elevation and increased black spruce genes on Mount Washington and Camels Hump. Pure black spruce was found on Mount Washington from 1356 m to 1582 m. No pure black or red spruce was found on Camels Hump although the proportion of red spruce alleles was significantly greater on Camels Hump. All trees sampled at all elevations on Whiteface Mountain were pure red spruce. Thus the proportion of black spruce alleles in high elevation spruce populations decreases from east to west. This closely parallels the increase in spruce decline which increases from east to west.  相似文献

Competition among males influences the distribution of copulations and should therefore influence the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). We developed a model to investigate STDs in the mating and social systems found in primates, and we tested predictions using comparative methods. In the model, groups were distributed on a square lattice in which males or females disperse and males undergo characteristic dominance trajectories at maturity (challenge vs. queuing). We investigated the impact of mating rate, mating skew, migration rate of males or females, and group size on disease spread and prevalence. The model generated several predictions: 1) STD prevalence is higher in females than males; 2) STD risk increases with copulation rate; 3) high skew is negatively associated with STD risk; 4) STD risk is higher for all individuals when females disperse and 5) when mortality rates are lower; and 6) reproductive skew and later age of male dominance (queuing) produce more strongly female-biased STD prevalence. In comparative tests, we quantified STD risk as prevalence and richness of sexually transmitted organisms at the host species level. We found positive associations between host longevity and higher STD richness, and only (nonsignificant) weak trends for females to have higher STD prevalence. Mating skew showed a weakly positive association with STD richness, contrary to predictions of our model but consistent with predictions from a previous model. In some tests, we also found that female dispersal resulted in greater STD infection risk. Collectively, these results demonstrate that mating competition and demography influence patterns of STD infection, with mortality rates having the strongest effects in comparative tests.  相似文献

When given a choice of swimming against a black background near an empty black end compartment or swimming against a white background near an empty white compartment, black morph mollies Poecilia latipinna spent significantly more time against the black background. The presence of a shoal (either white or black mollies) in the black compartment increased the preference of the test fish for the black background. However, black molly test fish spent significantly less time against a black background if a black shoal was present in the white compartment than in assays in which a white shoal was in the white compartment. In assays where test fish were given the choice between two black shoals, test fish spent significantly more time near the black shoal on the black background. Similarly, when given the choice between two white shoals, test fish spent significantly more time against the black background. The results suggest that the presence of cryptic backgrounds alter shoalmate choices in fish that assort according to body colouration.  相似文献

Integration of behaviourally relevant odours at the central nervous level of 3rd instar nymphal desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, showed phase- and (developmental) stage-dependent characteristics which correlated with differences in the number of olfactory sensilla. Antennal lobe (AL) neurons of gregarious locusts generally responded more frequently and showed a higher sensitivity to the tested stimuli. However, AL neurons of solitary locusts responded significantly more frequently to phenylacetonitril, the major component of the adult aggregation pheromone. Pheromone-specific, plant-specific and pheromone-plant generalist neurons were found in both phases. The response spectra of pheromone-specific neurons correlated with the potential behavioural significance of attractant chemical cues in the environment. Neurons of both phases responded specifically to stage-specific aggregation-pheromone components and to other chemical cues that may be involved in the location of suitable roosting and foraging sites.  相似文献

Two field studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of mosquito collection methods for species composition, species abundance, and Japanese encephalitis virus infection rates in Taiwan. Traps evaluated included John W. Hock (JH) model UD black light traps, JH model 1012 new standard miniature CDC light traps, JH model 1712 CDC gravid traps, and Taiwan‐made Pest‐O‐Lite light traps. Backpack aspirators and sweep nets were also used to collect the resting population. Culex tritaeniorhynchus in all studies and Mansonia uniformis in the Taipei areas were the two most abundance species collected. Dry ice‐baited UD black light traps were effective in regard to species diversity, species abundance, and Japanese encephalitis virus infection rates. The unbaited Pest‐O‐Lite light traps collected significantly more female mosquitoes than the UD black light traps but performed similarly with regard to species diversity and male mosquito collection. Most mosquitoes collected by Pest‐O‐Lite light traps were dried and not suitable for virus detection. Dry ice‐baited CDC light traps collected significantly fewer mosquitoes than other light traps. Although CO2‐baited UD black light traps with octenol attracted more mosquitoes, no statistical significance was found compared to CO2‐baited UD black light traps without octenol. Japanese encephalitis viruses were isolated from half of the positive pools in UD black light traps and CDC light traps.  相似文献
