Climate change treatments – winter warming, summer drought and increased summer precipitation – have been imposed on an upland grassland continuously for 7 years. The vegetation was surveyed yearly. In the seventh year, soil samples were collected on four occasions through the growing season in order to assess mycorrhizal fungal abundance. Mycorrhizal fungal colonisation of roots and extraradical mycorrhizal hyphal (EMH) density in the soil were both affected by the climatic manipulations, especially by summer drought. Both winter warming and summer drought increased the proportion of root length colonised (RLC) and decreased the density of external mycorrhizal hyphal. Much of the response of mycorrhizal fungi to climate change could be attributed to climate‐induced changes in the vegetation, especially plant species relative abundance. However, it is possible that some of the mycorrhizal response to the climatic manipulations was direct – for example, the response of the EMH density to the drought treatment. Future work should address the likely change in mycorrhizal functioning under warmer and drier conditions.

The influence of plant functional groups and moderate seasonality on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal status (root colonization and spore density) was investigated during 13 consecutive months in a chronosequence of succession in southern Brazil, consisting of grassland field, scrub vegetation, secondary forest and mature forest, in a region of transition from tropical to subtropical zones. AM root colonization and spore density decreased with advancing succession and were highest in early successional sites with grassland and scrub vegetation, intermediary in the secondary forest and lowest in the mature forest. They were little influenced by soil properties, but were sufficiently influenced by the fine root nutrient status and fine root traits among different functional plant groups. AM root colonization and spore density were higher during the favourable plant growth season (spring and summer) than during the less favourable plant growth season (autumn and winter). Spore density displayed significant seasonal variation at all sites, whilst root colonization displayed significant seasonal variation in grassland, scrub and secondary forest, but not in mature forest. The data suggest that (1) different plant functional groups display different relationships with AM fungi, influencing their abundance differentially; (2) plant species from early successional phases are more susceptible to AM root colonization and maintain higher AM sporulation than late successional species; (3) fine root traits and nutrient status influence these AM fungal attributes; and (4) higher AM spore production and root colonization is associated with the season of higher light incidence and temperature, abundant water in soil and higher plant metabolic activity.

We investigated the impact of drought and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the morphological structure and physiological function of shoots and roots of male and female seedlings of the dioecious plant Populus cathayana Rehder. Pot-grown seedlings were subjected to well watered or water-limiting conditions (drought) and were grown in soil that was either inoculated or not inoculated with the AM fungus Rhizophagus intraradices. No significant differences were found in the infection rates between the two sexes. Drought decreased root and shoot growth, biomass and root morphological characteristics, whereas superoxide radical (O2–) and hydrogen peroxide content, peroxidase (POD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and proline content were significantly enhanced in both sexes. Male plants that formed an AM fungal symbiosis showed a significant increase in shoot and root morphological growth, increased proline content of leaves and roots, and increased POD activity in roots under both watering regimes; however, MDA concentration in the roots decreased. By contrast, AM fungi either had no effect or a slight negative effect on the shoot and root growth of female plants, with lower root biomass, total biomass and root/shoot ration under drought. In females, MDA concentration increased in leaves and roots under both watering regimes, and the proline content and POD activity of roots increased under drought conditions; however, POD activity significantly decreased under well-watered conditions. These findings suggest that AM fungi enhanced the tolerance of male plants to drought by improving shoot and root growth, biomass and the antioxidant system. Further investigation is needed to unravel the complex effects of AM fungi on the growth and antioxidant system of female plants.

We studied seasonal variation in population attributes of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi over 2 years in four sites of temperate grasslands of the Argentinean Flooding Pampas. The sites represent a wide range of soil conditions, hydrologic gradients, and floristic composition. Lotus glaber, a perennial herbaceous legume naturalised in the Flooding Pampas, was dominant at the four plant community sites. Its roots were highly colonised by AM fungi. Temporal variations in spore density, spore type, AM root colonisation, floristic composition and soil chemical characteristics occurred in each site and were different among sites. The duration of flooding had no effect on spore density but depressed AM root colonisation. Eleven different types of spores were recognized and four were identified. Two species dominated at the four sites: Glomus fasciculatum and Glomus intraradices. Spore density was highest in summer (dry season) and lowest in winter (wet season) with intermediate values in autumn and spring. Colonisation of L. glaber roots was highest in summer or spring and lowest in winter or autumn. The relative density of G. fasciculatum and G. intraradices versus Glomus sp. and Acaulospora sp. had distinctive seasonal peaks. These seasonal peaks occurred at all four sites, suggesting differences among AM fungus species with respect to the seasonality of sporulation. Spore density and AM root colonisation when measured at any one time were poorly related to each other. However, spore density was significantly correlated with root colonisation 3 months before, suggesting that high colonisation in one season precedes high sporulation in the next season.

Knowledge of the changes in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi is fundamental for understanding the success of exotic plant invasions in natural ecosystems. In this study, AM fungal colonization and spore community were examined along an invasive gradient of the exotic plant Eupatorium adenophorum in a secondary forest in southwestern China. With increasing E. adenophorum invasion, the density of arbuscules in the roots of E. adenophorum significantly increased, but the AM root colonization rate and the densities of vesicles and hyphal coils in roots of E. adenophorum were not significantly different. A total of 29 AM fungi belonging to nine genera were identified based on spore morphology. Claroideoglomus etunicatum, Funneliformis geosporus, and Glomus aggregatum were the most common AM fungal species. The E. adenophorum invasion significantly decreased the AM fungal spore density in the soil. Furthermore, with increasing of E. adenophorum invasion the spore densities of C. etunicatum, G. aggregatum, and G. arenarium significantly decreased, whereas F. geosporus significantly increased. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling demonstrated that the AM fungus community composition was significantly different (P=0.003) in the different invasive levels of E. adenophorum, and significantly correlated with plant species richness, soil total P, and soil NO3 ?-N. The results suggest that the alteration in AM fungus community might be caused by E. adenophorum invasion via changing the local plant community and soil properties in a Chinese secondary forest ecosystem.

The influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on aggregate stability of a semi-arid Indian vertisol was studied in a pot experiment in which Sorghum bicolor (L.) was grown as test plant for 10 weeks. Pasteurized soil inoculated with AM fungi was studied with pasteurized and unpasteurized soils as references. A part of the soil in each pot was placed in nylon mesh bags to separate effects of roots and hyphae. The sorghum plants were planted outside the mesh bags which permitted AM hyphae to enter while excluding roots. Aggregate stability of the soil was determined by wet-sieving and turbidimetric measurements. Development of the AM fungi was quantified as colonized root length and external hyphal length. Soil exposed to growth of roots and hyphae (outside mesh bags) showed aggregates with larger geometric mean diameter (GMD) in pasteurized soil inoculated with AM fungi than in pasteurized uninoculated soil. There was no significant difference in GMD of the inoculated, pasteurized soil and the unpasteurized soil. No significant effects of inoculation or plant growth were found in pasteurized soil exposed to hyphal growth only (inside the mesh bags). However, the unpasteurized soil had significantly higher GMD than the pasteurized soil, irrespective of plants and inoculum. Turbidimetric measurements of soil exposed to roots and hyphae (outside mesh bags) showed the highest aggregate stability for the inoculated pasteurized soil. These results demonstrate that AM fungi contribute to the stabilization of soil aggregates in a vertisol, and that the effect is significant after only one growing season. The effect was associated with both AM hyphae and the stimulation of root growth by AM fungi. The contribution from plant roots and AM hyphae to aggregate stability of different size fractions is discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Colonization of roots by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in several annual crops in two consecutive seasons was compared with, in the second season, the density of fungal propagules in the soil with the use of a bioassay. Root density decreased down the soil profile in both years in all crops, and a high proportion of roots were mycorrhizal throughout the profile. AM colonization decreased down the profile in cotton and lablab in the second season only. The bioassay indicated that most propagules of AM fungi in soils under cotton were located near the surface, with virtually no propagules at 1 m. The absence of propagules at depth indicates a lack of mycelium deep in the soil, and suggests that mycorrhizas are primarily initiated in the surface soil and that the fungi colonize the root system mostly through secondary spread down the profile. The use of AM colonization in the field as an indicator of propagule density and symbiotic function should be qualified by an understanding of the depth in the soil from which roots were extracted.

How soil carbon balance will be affected by plant–mycorrhizal interactions under future climate scenarios remains a significant unknown in our ability to forecast ecosystem carbon storage and fluxes. We examined the effects of soil temperature (14, 20, 26 °C) on the structure and extent of a multispecies community of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi associated with Plantago lanceolata. To isolate fungi from roots, we used a mesh‐divided pot system with separate hyphal compartments near and away from the plant. A 13C pulse label was then used to trace the flow of recently fixed photosynthate from plants into belowground pools and respiration. Temperature significantly altered the structure and allocation of the AM hyphal network, with a switch from more vesicles (storage) in cooled soils to more extensive extraradical hyphal networks (growth) in warmed soils. As soil temperature increased, we also observed an increase in the speed at which plant photosynthate was transferred to and respired by roots and AM fungi coupled with an increase in the amount of carbon respired per unit hyphal length. These differences were largely independent of plant size and rates of photosynthesis. In a warmer world, we would therefore expect more carbon losses to the atmosphere from AM fungal respiration, which are unlikely to be balanced by increased growth of AM fungal hyphae.

Background and aims

Soil nutrients and light have major effects on the economics of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbioses. This study tests the main and interactive effects of soil fertility and light on AM fungal community.

Methods

We conducted a 3 year mesocosm experiment with a full two factorial design: light (full light or shade) and soil fertility (unfertilized or fertilized), on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Plant traits, soil characteristics and the AM fungal communities inside roots and in soils were measured.

Results

Shade reduced AM colonization of roots, fertilization reduced the hyphal abundance in the soil, and both factors reduced species richness of AM fungi inside plant roots. Fertilization exacerbated the negative impacts of shade on AM fungal abundance and diversity. We observed 15 phylotypes of AM fungi inside roots and ten morphotypes of AM fungal spores in the soil. Taxa responded differently to shade and fertilization and there was little congruence between the responses of fungi inside the roots and in the spore community.

Conclusions

Our findings indicate that both shade and fertilization reduce the abundance of AM fungi, but the two factors have different effects on the quality of plant roots as habitat for AM fungi.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant symbiosis in a saline-sodic soil

The seasonality of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi–plant symbiosis in Lotus glaber Mill. and Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) O.K. and the association with phosphorus (P) plant nutrition were studied in a saline-sodic soil at the four seasons during a year. Plant roots of both species were densely colonized by AM fungi (90 and 73%, respectively in L. glaber and S. secundatum) at high values of soil pH (9.2) and exchangeable sodium percentage (65%). The percentage of colonized root length differed between species and showed seasonality. The morphology of root colonization had a similar pattern in both species. The arbuscular colonization fraction increased at the beginning of the growing season and was positively associated with increased P concentration in both shoot and root tissue. The vesicular colonization fraction was high in summer when plants suffer from stress imposed by high temperatures and drought periods, and negatively associated with P in plant tissue. Spore and hyphal densities in soil were not associated with AM root colonization and did not show seasonality. Our results suggest that AM fungi can survive and colonize L. glaber and S. secundatum roots adapted to extreme saline-sodic soil condition. The symbiosis responds to seasonality and P uptake by the host altering the morphology of root colonization.

Forest fire can affect arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi by changing the soil conditions and by directly altering AM proliferation. We studied the effects of a severe forest fire at Margalla Hills near Islamabad on the number and viability of AM fungal propagules in the burnt soil and their role in the re-establishment of post-fire infection in colonized plants. Compared with a nearby control area, the burnt site had a similar number of total spores but a lower number of viable AM fungal propagules. The roots of the two most frequent species at the burnt site, Dodonaea viscosa and Aristida adscensionis, showed a gradual increase in percentage root length colonized by AM fungi in general and hyphal infection in particular. Our results indicate resumption of mycorrhizal activity following the fire, probably from AM hyphae in the roots of these dominant shrubs.

Seasonality of root fungal colonization in low-alpine herbs
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and dark septate endophytic (DSE) fungal colonization of Alchemilla glomerulans, Carex vaginata, Ranunculus acris ssp. pumilus and Trollius europaeus growing in low-alpine meadows in the Finnish subarctic were studied at different times during the growing season. Fungal colonization was correlated to soil soluble phosphorus (P) concentration. The influence of flower bud removal on fungal colonization was investigated in A. glomerulans, C. vaginata and R. acris and the correlation between AM and DSE colonization was studied. The fungal colonization patterns were found to be species-specific. R. acris maintained a relatively high rate of fungal colonization throughout the summer, while the rates of colonization of T. europaeus were lower and decreased towards the end of the season. A. glomerulans had constant arbuscular and vesicular colonization throughout the summer, but hyphal and DSE colonization declined towards the end of the season. C. vaginata did not form arbuscular mycorrhiza, but was colonized by DSE fungi and hyaline septate hyphae throughout the season. The soil soluble P concentration showed some seasonal variation, but was also highly variable between the study sites. Bud removal decreased arbuscular colonization of R. acris, but no unique effects were seen in any other parameters or the other species studied. The root fungal parameters correlated with soil P in some species at some sites, but no consistent trend was found. DSE colonization was positively correlated with root vesicular and hyphal colonization in some cases. The differences in fungal colonization parameters may be related to species-specific phenologies.

在菌丝室中,G.intraradices显著提高了总球囊霉素含量.

Belowground foodwebs, which dominate energy flow in temperate systems, may yield insights into general foodweb function: do consumers drive resource levels or simply respond to them? Controversy exists about the relationships among fine roots, mycorrhizal fungi and invertebrate grazers because of the difficulty of studying belowground processes. We used contrasting temporal scales to examine relationships among roots, fungi and collembola in the top 90 cm of soil in native grassland and forest over three years, with data collected from minirhizotrons. Root production was generally similar between habitats, but fungal production and collembola density were mostly significantly greater in forest than grassland. All variables decreased significantly with increasing depth, except for forest mycorrhizal fungi. This exception suggests that forest mycorrhizae are especially important for nutrient uptake at greater soil depths. Relationships among roots, mycorrhizal fungi and collembola varied with the temporal scale considered. Over the entire growing season, collembola were significantly positively correlated with root production in forest, and with both fungal and root production in grassland, reflecting the broad positive associations between these groups. In contrast, over the shortest sampling interval (i.e. two weeks), strong negative relationships suggested that collembola grazing decreased fungal and root production. Data from all dates and depths considered together revealed that both fungal and root production were significantly higher at intermediate collembola density than at low or very high density. In summary, belowground consumers appear to drive resource levels at short time scales, but respond to broad variation in resource availability at annual time scales.

Background and aims

The effect of plant species on their root-associated arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi is well studied, but how this effect operates at the cultivar level remains poorly understood. This study investigates how wheat cultivars shape their AM fungal communities.

Methods

Twenty-one new wheat cultivars were traditionally cultivated in a dryland of northwestern China, and their agronomic traits, soil characteristics and the abundance and community composition of AM fungi were measured.

Results

Both spore community in soils and AM fungal phylotypes inside roots were significantly influenced by cultivar even though hyphal abundance, spore density and AM fungal diversity were similar across cultivars. Three out of 16 AM fungal phylotypes interacted with most cultivars, whilst some phylotypes preferred to colonize cultivars with similar agronomic traits. Six wheat cultivars, all which had hosted 6 AM fungal phylotypes, seemed to be generalists. Nestedness analysis and stochastic model fitting revealed that the AM fungal communities colonizing roots were codetermined by deterministic and stochastic processes.

Conclusions

A complex pattern of cultivar-AM fungal interactions was observed in this study, and our results highlight that the host effect on the community assembly of AM fungi could be operating on the level of plant cultivar.

We investigated the influence of elevated CO2 and soil N availability on the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal fungi, and on the number of mycophagous soil microarthropods associated with the roots of Populus tremuloides . CO2 concentration did not significantly affect percentage infection of Populus roots by mycorrhizal or non-mycorrhizal fungi. However, the extra-radical hyphal network was altered both qualitatively and quantitatively, and there was a strong interaction between CO2 and soil N availability. Under N-poor soil conditions, elevated CO2 stimulated hyphal length by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, but depressed growth by non-mycorrhizal fungi. There was no CO2 effect at high N availability. High N availability stimulated growth by opportunistic saprobic/pathogenic fungi. Soil mites were not affected by any treatment, but collembolan numbers were positively correlated with the increase in non-mycorrhizal fungi. Results indicate a strong interaction between CO2 concentration and soil N availability on mycorrhizal functioning and on fungal-based soil food webs.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form mutualistic symbioses with the root systems of most plant species. These mutualisms regulate nutrient exchange in the plant–soil interface and might influence the way in which plants respond to increasing atmospheric CO2. In other experiments, mycorrhizal responses to elevated CO2 have been variable, so in this study we test the hypothesis that different genera of AM fungi differ in their response, and in turn alter the plant's response, to elevated CO2. Four species from three genera of AM fungi were tested. Artemisia tridentata Nutt. seedlings were inoculated with either Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith, Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerdemann, Acaulospora sp. or Scutellospora calospora (Nicol. & Gerd.) Walker & Sanders and grown at either ambient CO2 (350 ppm) or elevated CO2 (700 ppm). Several significant inter-specific responses were detected. Elevated CO2 caused percent arbuscular and hyphal colonization to increase for the two Glomus species, but not for Acaulospora sp. or S. calospora . Vesicular colonization was not affected by elevated CO2 for any fungal species. In the extra-radical phase, the two Glomus species produced a significantly higher number of spores in response to elevated CO2, whereas Acaulospora sp. and S. calospora developed significantly higher hyphal lengths. These data show that AM fungal taxa differ in their growth allocation strategies and in their responses to elevated CO2, and that mycorrhizal diversity should not be overlooked in global change research.

Temporal variations in the relationships among plant nutrient concentrations, soil properties and arbuscular-mycorrhizal (AM) fungal dynamics were studied along a topographic and saline gradient in a temperate grassland soil. Soil and plant ( Lotus tenuis , Paspalum vaginatum , Stenotaphrum secundatum ) samples were collected on four seasonally based occasions. The morphology of AM root colonization had a similar pattern in the plants studied. Maximum arbuscular colonization occurred at the beginning of the growing season in late winter and was minimal in late summer, but maximal vesicular colonization occurred in summer and was minimal in winter, suggesting a preferential production of these morphological phases by the fungus with respect to season. The greatest arbuscular colonization was associated with the highest N and P concentrations in plant tissue, suggesting a correspondence with increases in the rate of nutrient transfer between the symbiotic partners. Water content, salinity and sodicity in soil were positively associated with AM root colonization and arbuscule colonization in L. tenuis , but negatively so in the grasses. There were distinct seasonally related effects with respect to both spore density and AM colonization, which were independent of particular combinations of plant species and soil sites.
