An integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system, with one fish cage model surrounded by an island and shellfish rafts, was used in the current study. Planktonic and sediment bacterial communities in the IMTA system were monitored over four seasons in 2019. In both plankton and sediment samples, the most dominant phyla were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Sediment bacterial samples were more similar and had higher levels of biodiversity than planktonic bacterial samples. Obvious seasonal variations were found in plankton samples, but not in sediment samples. No obvious inter-site variations in planktonic and sediment bacteria (fish cages, shellfish rafts and control sites) were found and the results suggested that no obvious impact of feeding operations in fish culture cage model on bacterial communities in the IMTA system was observed in this study. Based on the sequence data, some faecal indicator bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacterial species were detected. According to the results, the bacterial water quality in the IMTA system was acceptable. PICRUSt (Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States) analysis revealed that the primary difference in potential functional roles of planktonic and sediment bacteria was amino acid transport and metabolism, which was active in different seasons.  相似文献

The attractant betaine and the antibiotic growth promoter florfenicol are commonly used together in Chinese fresh water aquaculture, but there is no information about the effect of these two feed additive on the intestinal autochthonous bacterial community in hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis nilotica ♀ × O. aureas ♂). Hybrid tilapia (240 fish in total; 20 fish per net cage; three cages per group) were divided into four dietary groups: control group, no betaine or florfenical addition (CK); betaine group, 0.1% betaine added (B); florfenicol group, 0.002% florfenicol added (F); and combination group, 0.1% betaine and 0.002% florfenicol added together (BF). After 8 weeks of feeding, six fish from each cage were chosen randomly, the guts were sampled and pooled, and their intestinal autochthonous bacterial communities were analyzed by 16S rDNA-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Enumeration of total gut autochthonous bacteria was analyzed by quantitative PCR with rpoB as the endogenous control. The results showed that the fish intestinal bacteria of group B were more diverse than that of CK, and that of F and BF groups was reduced in the total numbers and limited to certain bacterial species or genera (P < 0.05). This study revealed that betaine can promote some intestinal autochthonous bacteria, and florfenicol play a depressor role. When combined together, florfenicol may overshadow the effect of betaine on the predominant intestinal bacteria of tilapia.  相似文献

Total bacterial counts and the number of the fish pathogenic bacterium Vibrio salmonicida have been studied in water samples collected twice a month in 12 Norwegian fish farms from October 1988 to June 1989. Total counts were determined by staining with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole followed by epifluorescence microscopy. Cells of V. salmonicida were enumerated with a fluorescent antibody technique using highly specific monoclonal antibodies. Despite the fact that no outbreak of cold-water vibriosis was reported, V. salmonicida was detected in all 12 farms, in numbers ranging from 12 to 43 bacteria/mL. The number of farms where V. salmonicida was detected was generally highest during the winter. Total bacterial counts in the water samples varied between 4 X 10(4) and 9 X 10(5) bacteria/mL and the lowest numbers occurred during the winter period. The total bacterial counts were comparable with counts in water uninfluenced by fish farming. On the basis of our results, and additional information available about cold-water vibriosis caused by the bacterium V. salmonicida, an asymptomatic carrier state of the disease is proposed.  相似文献

The role of fish predation in structuring assemblages of fish over unvegetated sand and seagrass was examined using enclosure and exclusion cages to manipulate the abundance of predatory fish from November 1998 to January 1999. In our exclusion experiment, piscivorous fish were excluded from patches of unvegetated sand and seagrass to measure how they altered abundances of small fishes, i.e., fish <10 cm in length. Habitats from which piscivorous fish were excluded contained more small fish than those with partial cages, which in turn contained more fish than uncaged areas. These patterns were consistent between unvegetated sand and seagrass areas, although the relative differences between predator treatments varied with habitat. Overall, small fish were more abundant in unvegetated sand than seagrass. Atherinids and syngnathids were the numerically dominant families of small fish and varied in complex ways amongst habitats and cage treatments. The abundance of atherinids varied inconsistently between cage treatments through time. Only during the final two sampling times did the abundance of atherinids vary significantly across cage treatments. Syngnathids were strongly associated with seagrass and were significantly more abundant in caged than uncaged habitats. In our enclosure experiment, five individuals of a single species of transient piscivorous fish, Western Australian salmon (Arripidae: Arripis truttacea Cuvier), were enclosed in cages to provide an estimate of the potential for this species to impact on small fish. The abundance of small fish varied significantly between cage treatments. Small fish were more abundant in enclosure cages and exclusion cages than uncaged areas; however, there was no difference in the abundance of small fish in enclosure cages and partial cages, and no difference between exclusion cages and partial cages. These patterns were consistent amongst habitats. Atherinids and syngnathids were again the numerically dominant families of small fish; atherinids varied more with cage structure while syngnathids did not vary statistically between cages, blocks (locations within which a single replicate of each cage treatment was applied) or habitats. Dietary analysis of caged A. truttacea demonstrated the potential for this species to influence the assemblage structure of small fish through predation - atherinids were consumed more frequently in unvegetated sand than seagrass, and syngnathids were consumed only in seagrass, where they are most abundant. Observations of significant cage or predation effects depended strongly on the time at which sampling was undertaken. In the case of the atherinids, no predation or cage effects were observed during the first two sampling times, but cage effects and predation effects strongly influenced abundances of fish during the third and fourth sampling times, respectively. Our study suggests that transient piscivorous fish may be important in structuring assemblages of small fish in seagrass and unvegetated sand, and seagrass beds may provide a refuge to fishes. But the importance of habitat complexity and predation, in relation to the potentially confounding effects of cage structure, depends strongly on the time at which treatments are sampled, and the periodicity and multiplicity of sampling should be considered in future predation studies.  相似文献

1. Manipulative experiments were carried out in four Hong Kong streams (two shaded, two unshaded) to investigate the impact of grazing by an algivorous fish, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, on benthic algal biomass and assemblage composition. Experiments were conducted and repeated during both the dry and wet seasons to determine whether spate‐induced disturbance modified any grazing effect. Treatments comprised fish exclusion and inclusion via closed and open cages, with a no‐cage treatment used as a control for the cage effect. Treatments were maintained for 4 weeks in each experimental run. 2. Grazing by P. myersi reduced benthic algal biomass and the organic matter content of periphyton in open cages and the no‐cage treatment relative to closed cages. The similarity between open‐cage and no‐cage treatments was evidence that the overall difference among treatments was caused by limiting fish access to closed cages and not merely an artifact of caging. Grazing effects were broadly similar in all streams, but there was a significant statistical interaction between treatments and seasons. 3. Analysis of dry‐season data matched the overall trend in inter‐treatment differences, confirming the effects of grazing by P. myersi on algal biomass and periphyton organic matter. Significant differences in algal assemblage composition between closed‐cage and no‐cage treatments during the dry season reflected reductions in the abundance of erect, stalked diatoms (Gomphonema) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Homeothrix). Removal of these vulnerable overstorey algae by P. myersi resulted in greater abundance of understorey diatoms (Achnanthes and Cocconeis) in the no‐cage treatment in all streams during the dry season. The composition of algal assemblages in open cages was intermediate between the other two treatments. 4. Although fish densities were greater in all streams during the wet season, spate‐induced disturbance obscured grazing effects and there were no significant differences among treatments attributable to fish grazing. Seasonal variation in impacts of P. myersi grazing provides support for the harsh‐benign hypothesis, and confirms that biotic factors are less important controls of stream algal biomass and assemblage structure during periods (i.e. the wet season in Hong Kong) when abiotic disturbances are frequent or intense.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of cultured Atlantic salmon larger than 1 kg was monitored by hydroacoustics in both a shallow (6 m) and a deep (20 m) cage. Surface light levels and fish distribution were registered for three periods throughout the year. The two fish groups were fed calculated rations twice a day. During the winter and spring (including vernal equinox), the fish were distributed at around 5 m depth in both cages when not feeding. Around summer solstice, the fish preferred deeper waters when not feeding. The light dependency of the vertical migration was pronounced, and indicates clearly that even a 20 m deep cage is not deep enough to meet the depth requirements of large Atlantic salmon during summer.  相似文献

Six floating 4-m3 cages stocked with 40 silver carp per cage (three cages) and 40 bighead carp per cage (three cages) were placed in each of the three subtropical Lakes Phewa, Begnas, and Rupa. The fish were cultured, without supplying artificial feed, from August 1994 to December 1995. Fish growth was positively correlated with water temperature, and a slight loss in weight occurred in January when water temperature fell below 16°C in all the lakes. Fish growth was better in Lake Phewa than in Lakes Begnas and Rupa, where food might not have been sufficient or of a quality to sustain fish growth. The fish fed on mostly indigestible phytoplankton, Microcystis aeruginosa in Lake Begnas and on Tabellaria fenestrata and Microcystis aeruginosa in Lake Rupa, which can lead to poor fish growth. The maximum growth rate of silver carp (5.8 g day−1) and bighead carp (4.7 g day−1) occurred in Lake Phewa when Ceratium hirundinella and Peridinium spp. were abundant from August through October. The food particles found in the gut were mostly similar in silver and bighead carp, though Cladocerans (Bosmina longirostris) were observed sparsely in the gut contents of bighead carp only. AIM: The effects of fish farming on microbial enzyme activities and heterotrophic bacterial density were investigated in three Mediterranean sites before and after the start of mariculture. METHODS AND RESULTS: Microbial activities were measured on water and sediment samples by using fluorogenic substrates specific for leucine aminopeptidase, beta-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase (AP); bacterial counts were determined by Marine agar plates. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Comparison of activity and abundance values obtained before and after the experiment showed that fish farming mainly affected the levels of microbial activities; they were significantly enhanced both in water and sediments, reaching an increase of 183.66 times for AP in Castellammare Gulf. After mariculture, no significant variations were recorded in heterotrophic bacterial density in the waters, while significant changes were observed in the sediments. Effects induced appeared to be extended not only to stations in which cages were located, but also to control sites far from the direct influence of fish farming.  相似文献

A chemical and microbiological investigation was performed to determine ecological impact in sediments below a new offshore mariculture operation on the southwest coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Sediment samples collected directly below the fish enclosures were compared with sediment collected 300 m upcurrent. Total organic carbon was 25–37% higher in the control compared with cage samples and ammonia was 30–46% higher in cage samples. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) counts were 36% higher in cage sample sediments.Genomic 16S rDNA was PCR amplified from total DNA extracted from sediments and analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Similar gradient profiles for control and cage samples were observed. Cloned 16S rDNA libraries for species sampling and determination indicate similar and diverse bacterial communities. Bacteria belonging to the γ-Proteobacteria class were frequently represented and atypical or pathogenic bacterial species were not detected.A mathematical model developed for prediction of organic material deposition suggests that while currents will reduce fecal loading and feed deposition beneath a cage, there is expected to be sufficient nutrient addition to impact those sediments. Time series or statistical information on the current field beneath the fish cages are needed to apply the model for predicting locations of high deposition. This would contribute to the development of a comprehensive monitoring program that would sample multiple locations over time to generate an accurate and comprehensive depiction of the environmental impacts of this new and expanding commercial endeavor.  相似文献

The objective of the study reported here was to investigate three factors that may affect the amounts of water consumed and urine excreted by a rat in the metabolism cage: water dilution, housing, and food. Young F344/N rats (eight per group) were used for all experiments. Food was withheld from rats before each 16-h urine collection, then rats were transferred into a metabolism cage. For trial A (water dilution), urine was collected from rats supplied with dyed water (0.05%, vol/vol). This was repeated three times over a 2-week period. Dye in water or urine was quantified, using a spectrophotometer. For trial B (housing), rats were individually housed in wire cages for 3 weeks before the first urine collection. Then they were group housed in the solid-bottom cage (four per cage). After 2 weeks of acclimation, urine collection was repeated. For trial C (food), one group of rats was provided with food, the other was not, during urine collection. About 8% of urine samples of small volume (< or = 3 ml) from trial A were contaminated with drinking water up to 13% of volume. The average urine volume associated with individual housing was approximately twice as large as that associated with group housing. When food was provided during urine collection, rats consumed similar amounts of water but excreted significantly smaller amounts of urine than did rats without food. It was concluded that water dilution of a urine sample from a sipper bottle is relatively small; rats individually housed in wire caging before urine collection can consume and excrete a larger quantity of water, compared with rats group housed in solid-bottom cages; and highly variable urine volumes are, in part, associated with lack of access to food during urine collection.  相似文献

Aims: To evaluate whether two commercial nitrifying bacterial consortia can function as biocontrol agents in ornamental fish transporting systems. Methods and Results: The consortia were applied in a simulated set‐up using zebrafish as the model organism in three trials. The efficacy of the bacterial consortia in controlling the ammonia level was validated by measuring water quality parameters such as total ammonia, nitrate and pH of the transport water. The bacterial community structure in the transport unit was studied using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. The consortia tested improved the nitrifying activity that in turn facilitated the reduction of ammonia that had accumulated during the transport. Bacterial profiles revealed the presence of both ammonia‐oxidizing and nitrite‐oxidizing bacteria in the transport bags. Conclusions: The application of the consortia during the transportation of zebrafish could profoundly improve the water quality by curbing ammonia accumulation. Significance and Impact of the Study: The potential of applying nitrifying bacteria as a bioremediation practice during the transport of ornamental fish has been demonstrated and this innovative approach contributes to the amelioration of current fish welfare in ornamental fish trade.  相似文献

A bacteriological survey of gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata from different fish farms and culture systems on the Spanish Mediterranean coast was conducted. Three different studies were performed. Study A included hatchery-reared larvae; Study B, periodic examination of randomly sampled growing fish; and Study C, growing fish sampled only during mortality/morbidity events. In Studies B and C, sea cages, earth ponds and indoor tanks were surveyed, and in both cases diseased (showing clinical signs) and non-diseased fish were included. In Study A, a shift from Vibrio spp. (30 d after hatching) to oxidative species (60 d after hatching) was detected, and no mortality events were registered. The percentage of fish yielding bacterial growth were similar in Studies B and C, reaching 57.4 and 61.3%, respectively. A statistically significant relationship between the bacterial carriage and the type of facility was only found in Study B, showing that fish from sea cages had a higher bacterial occurrence than fish from other facilities. A statistically significant relationship between bacterial carriage and signs of disease was found, although the pattern differed in each study. Thus, in Study B only 36.2% of fish yielding abundant bacterial growth were diseased, versus 68.0% in Study C. In total, 25.0% of the fish examined were diseased. Bacterial species composition was similar in asymptomatic and diseased fish, except for a group of V. ichthyoenteri-like isolates that occurred almost exclusively in asymptomatic fish. Dominant bacterial species were V. harveyi and V. splendidus, followed by V. ichthyoenteri-like isolates, Photobacterium damselae ssp. damselae and V. fisheri. Non-fermenters were less frequent but, among them, unidentified halophilic Cytophaga-Flavobacterium isolates and Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis were the most abundant. An association of individual species with disease was not clear, which suggests the involvement of mixed infections.  相似文献

The novel environment of a metabolic cage can be stressful for rodents, but few studies have attempted to quantify this stress-response. Therefore, we determined the effects on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR), of placing mice of both sexes in metabolism cages for 2 days. After surgical implantation of a carotid artery catheter mice recovered individually in standard cages for 5 days. Mice then spent 2 days in metabolism cages. MAP and HR were monitored in the standard cage on Day 5 and in metabolism cages on Days 6-7. MAP increased by 18+/-3 and 22+/-4 %, while HR increased by 27+/-4 and 27+/-6 %, in males and females, respectively, during the first hours after cage switch. MAP decreased to baseline in the fourth and eighth h following metabolism cage switch in males and females, respectively. However, HR remained significantly elevated in both sexes during the entire two-day period in metabolism cages. Females had lower MAP than males both pre- and post-metabolism cage switch, but there were no sex differences in HR. These results demonstrate sustained changes in cardiovascular function when mice are housed in metabolism cages, which could potentially affect renal function.  相似文献

Intensive culture of grass carp and hybrid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella x Aristichthys nobilis ) larvae was conducted under Florida (U.S.A.) conditions. The influence of different rearing facilities (indoor tanks, outdoor tanks and cages) and different methods of fish feeding using live zooplankton and artificial food was tested. High survival (86–100%) and satisfactory grass carp growth (47–56 mg) were obtained in the outdoor tanks and cages during the 10–day experiment. It is believed, that the technique described can be used after some improvements for commercial–scale grass carp larvae rearing. Low survival (1–3%) was obtained in the hybrid culture experiment even though satisfactory growth rates (84–212 mg) were obtained after 13 days. High mortality was attributed to genetic abnormalities caused by hybridization. The hybrid does not appear to be a promising fish for culture.  相似文献

Consumtion of woody debris was common in salmon farmed near a British Columbian pulp mill. This study of a proposed technology designed to reduce the passage of debris into rearing cages noted: Consumption of woody debris occurred in 32 % of fish in modified cages and in 21 % of fish in the regular cage. Wood chips and bark were the dominant components of the woody debris consumed. The proportion of chips to bark in fish from both the modified and regular cages was the same. The tree species composition of the consumed wood chips reflected the chip composition utilised at the pulp mill. Debris-consuming fish from modified cages, however, had a greater average mass and larger number of items in their stomachs than did fist from the regular cages. Significant histopathologic changes were noted in the stomachs of affected fish, and fish in the modified cages suffered a higher mortality rate.  相似文献

Bacterial Interactions in Early Life Stages of Marine Cold Water Fish   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Abstract The intensive rearing of various fish species in aquaculture has revealed intimate relationships between fish and bacteria that eventually may affect establishment of a ``normal' mucosal microflora or result in disease epizootics. Interactions between bacteria and mucosal surfaces play important roles both at the egg and larval stages of marine fish. Bacterial adhesion and colonization of the egg surface occur within hours after fertilization. The diverse flora which eventually develops on the egg appears to reflect the bacterial composition and load of the ambient water, but species-specific adhesion at the egg surface may also play a role in development of the egg epiflora. Proteolytic enzymes produced by members of the adherent epiflora may cause serious damage to the developing egg and may also affect further adhesion of the epiflora. Ingestion of bacteria at the yolk sac stage results in establishment of a primary intestinal microflora which seems to persist beyond first feeding. Establishment of a gut microflora is likely to undergo several stages, resulting in an ``adult' microflora weeks to months after first feeding. Ingested bacteria may serve as an exogenous supply of nutrients or essential factors at an early life stage. Early exposure to high bacterial densities is probably important for immune tolerance, and thus for the establishment of a protective intestinal microflora. Successful rearing of early life stages of several marine fish species depends on knowledge of the complex interactions among the cultured organisms and the bacterial communities which develop at the mucosal surfaces and in the ambient water and rearing systems. The routine use of antibiotics during rearing of fish larvae is not advisable, since it may increase the risk of promoting antibiotic resistance and adversely affect the indigenous microflora of the larvae. The use of probiotics has proven advantageous in domestic animal production, and the search for effective probiotics may have a great potential in aquaculture of marine organisms. Bacteria with antagonistic effects against fish pathogens have been successfully administered to several fish species, resulting in decreased mortality or increased growth rate. We employed a novel method to exercise rats: making them rise to bipedal stance for feeding using raised cages. We studied its effects on the skeletons of 6 and 10-month-old intact or orchidectomized (ORX) rats. Body and hindlimb muscle weights, tibial BMC and periosteal cortical bone formation increased after housing in raised cages, but more so in 6-month-old animals than in 10-month-old ones. In 6-month-old orchidectomized rats, raised cages partially prevented ORX-induced bone loss by stimulating periosteal cortical bone (TX) formation and decreased bone resorption next to marrow. In 10-month-old male orchidectomized rats, raised cages also decreased the endosteal and trabecular bone resorption, but not enough to prevent completely ORX-induced net bone losses. Because the osteogenic effects of raised cages alone were only partial, we also studied the interaction between raised cage and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in 10-month-old retired female breeders. When treated with combined raised cage and PGE(2), both cortical (TX) and trabecular bone mass of the proximal tibial metaphysis and lumbar vertebral body increased over either raised cages or PGE(2) treatment alone, that was accompanied by dramatic increased bone formation at periosteal and endosteal surfaces. Thus making rats rise to erect bipedal stance for feeding helps to prevent bone loss after orchidectomy; it amplifies the anabolic effects of PGE(2), and it provides an inexpensive, non-invasive and reliable way to increase mechanical loading of certain bones of the rat skeleton.  相似文献

During spring and summer 2003, we measured a variety of chemical and biological parameters in five medium-sized, Mediterranean cage farms that exploit semi-offshore conditions, and controlled the supply of fodder. The objective was to assess whether modern cage farms proliferating at semi-offshore sites exert environmental impact levels equivalent to the levels described from more traditional cage farms located in shallow, sheltered sites. In the water column, we examined the concentration of dissolved inorganic nutrients and heterotrophic bacteria in both surface and near-bottom water. At the bottom, we examined the concentrations of benthic chlorophyll a, phaeophytin and organic matter in sediments, the granulometric structure of the sediment, and the taxonomic (at the family level) abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates. For most parameters, we found no substantial differences between farm and control sites. Rather, most variation was explained as a function of depth (surface versus bottom water) or season (spring versus summer conditions). Deviations of farm values from control values, when they occurred, were small and did not indicate any significant impact on either bacterioplankton or benthic chlorophyll. Only one of the five farms studied exerted a detectable impact on the benthic macroinvertebrate community immediately under the cages. These results suggest that medium-sized fish farms located on semi-exposed western Mediterranean coasts have fewer environmental impacts than traditional fish farms located in shallow, sheltered sites. Impact characterization in these new farms may require refinement of the standard approach to deal with rapid dispersal of effluents and sub-lethal levels of environmental disturbance.  相似文献

This study examined the changes in sex ratios and sex reversal rates in pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis that occur with the progression of the spawning season in a seminatural setting. Four groups of hatchery-produced pejerrey larvae were stocked in floating cages in La Salada de Monasterio lake (Pampas region), a natural habitat of this species, and reared from hatching beyond gonadal sex determination with minimum human interference. Cage 1 was stocked at the beginning of the spring spawning season and the other cages were stocked with monthly delays until cage 4 in early summer. The genotypic (amhy+, XY/YY; amhy−, XX) and phenotypic (testis, male; ovary, female) sex ratios and proportions of genotype/phenotype mismatched individuals were estimated and their relation to water temperature and daylength during the experiment was analysed by generalized linear modelling. Water temperature varied between 11 and 30.5°C, and daylength duration between 11 h 22 min and 14 h 35 min. Sex genotyping revealed nearly balanced sex ratios of XY/YY (46%–49.1%) and XX (50.9%–54%) fish in cages 2–4 whereas the genotypic sex ratio in cage 1 was clearly biased towards XY/YY fish (60.6%). Phenotypic males ranged from 42% to 54.4% in cages 1–3. Cage 4, in turn, had significantly more phenotypic males (66%). The percentage of XX males (phenotypic male/genotypic female) was 23.1% in cage 1, decreased to a minimum of 5.4% in cage 2 and gradually increased in cages 3 and 4 to a maximum of 40.7% in the latter. The percentages of XY/YY females (phenotypic female/genotypic male) were highest in cage 1 (30%) and decreased progressively in the other cages to a significantly lower value (4.3%) in cage 4. These results generally support the findings of laboratory studies on the effect of temperature on the sex determination of this species and also provide novel evidence of a XX genotype-specific masculinizing effect of short daylength.  相似文献

Urbanization has deleterious effects on water quality and biota in stream systems. This project used caged bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) to assess metazoan fish parasite communities in 2 urbanizing streams of the upper San Antonio River Basin, Bexar County, Texas. Field studies on Leon and Salado creeks were conducted during late summer in 1999 and 2000. Juvenile bluegill, obtained from a local aquaculturist, were held in cages for 10-22 days at middle and lower watershed sites to expose them to in-stream conditions and to allow parasite communities to establish. After removal from cages, fish were examined for metazoan parasites. In 2000, wild Lepomis spp. also were collected at study sites for parasite assessment. In both years, physical and chemical water properties were monitored at each site. Of the 120 fish examined for parasites, 96.7% were infected by at least 1 organism from among the 11 parasitic taxa observed. For caged fish, both diversity and equitability of parasite communities tended to be lower at the more eutrophic downstream sites; accordingly, parasite diversity and equitability were inversely correlated with nitrate concentrations. Ectoparasites were more prevalent in caged fish and endoparasites were more abundant in wild fish. An Ergasilus sp. copepod and a Posthodiplostomum sp. trematode dominated the ecto- and endoparasite faunas, respectively. This study suggests that assessment of watershed health can benefit from comparative cage studies of parasite community development involving sentinel fish species.  相似文献
