Respiration in fishes involves buccal pumping, which is characterized by the generation of nearly continuous water flow over the gills because of the rhythmic expansion/compression of the pharyngeal cavity. This mechanism is achieved by the functions of the vascular, skeletal, and muscular systems. However, the process by which the embryo establishes the mechanism remains a mystery. Morphological and kinematical observations on captive cloudy catsharks, Scyliorhinus torazame, have suggested that the embryo starts buccal pumping just before the respiratory slits open on the egg capsule. During the pre-opening period, the embryo acquires oxygen mainly via the external gill filaments. After slit opening, respiration of the embryo involves buccal pumping to pass water over the “internal gills.” The onset of buccal pumping accompanies four morphological changes: (1) regression of the external gill filaments, (2) development of blood vessels within the “internal gills,” (3) completion of the development of hyoid skeletal and muscular elements, and (4) development of the oral valve. A previous study showed that buccal pumping allows the embryo to actively regulate oxygen intake by changing the pumping frequency. Thus, establishment of buccal pumping in the egg capsule is probably important for embryo survival in the unstable oxygen environment of the egg capsule after slit opening.  相似文献

为了解版纳鱼螈(Ichthyophis bannanicus)胚胎和幼体鳃的退化特征,同窝卵中8枚在胚胎成熟阶段早期被随机取出剖产,随后余下的9枚卵在胚胎成熟阶段晚期时孵出或剖产,观察幼体或胚胎鳃的变化。成熟阶段早期的胚胎,初时其鳃色鲜红,鳃枝充盈,鳃丝与鳃轴近乎垂直;随后鳃色发白,鳃枝疲软,鳃丝卷曲,鳃丝与鳃轴夹角变小。成熟阶段晚期的胚胎和刚孵出的幼体,初时其鳃色纯白,鳃枝疲软,鳃丝卷曲,鳃丝与鳃轴夹角较小;随后鳃逐渐脱落。观察发现,版纳鱼螈胚胎或幼体鳃的退化模式不是重吸收,也不是重吸收加脱落,而仅为脱落。鳃退化过程经历外鳃供血减少-供血停止-鳃枝组织死亡和脱落3个阶段,每个阶段都有明显的外部形态特征。胚胎进入成熟阶段后,越早孵化,鳃枝留存越多,反之,鳃枝留存越少。发白后的鳃枝随机性脱落。  相似文献

Embryo development events were correlated with egg-case changes for the Aleutian skate Bathyraja aleutica and the Alaska skate Bathyraja parmifera . Yolk absorption underwent two phases: that of steady absorption during early development and that of rapid yolk absorption during the final development stages. Total length ( L T) for 50% of the pre-hatching embryos egg-case jelly disappearance was 92·04 mm (range 81–102 mm) and 99·36 mm (range 81–100 mm) for B. aleutica and B. parmifera , respectively, allowing the inner chamber to open to seawater flow. The tail filament underwent three phases of growth: rapid elongation during early development (<100 mm embryo L T), stasis of tail filament length during the remainder of embryo development and rapid absorption soon after hatching. Complete tail filament development coincided with the disappearance of egg-case jelly. Clasper buds first developed at embryos >70 mm L T for both species and the sex ratio was 1:1 well before hatching. Egg cases that were devoid of an ova or developing embryo were c. 5·0 and 6·5% of the egg cases examined for B. aleutica and B. parmifera , respectively. Measurements showed that egg cases containing only egg jelly were smaller in both width and length than those possessing an ova. Embryo stages were punctuated with distinct events that correlated with egg case changes controlling the internal environment of the developing embryo.  相似文献

The structure and composition of the yolk spherocrystal, a biomineral developed in the egg yolk sac during the incubation of a chicken embryo, were investigated through various modern analytical methods. Additionally, inside the yolk sac, yolk liquid crystal, a liquid crystalline phase of lipid developed during the incubation of the embryo, was found and investigated. The spherocrystal was found to be a composite composed of calcium carbonate (vaterite and calcite, primarily the former) and the yolk liquid crystal, which is believed to act as an organic template for spherocrystals mineralization, in a concentric multi-layered sphere structure. Moreover, the yolk liquid crystal was found to have a concentric multi-layered spherical structure and a composition consistent with lecithin. We believed that the spherocrystals function as a reservoir for the storage of calcium in the egg yolk sac during the development of the embryo.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of 385 male and 373 female slender smoothhounds,Gollum attenuatus, collected from New Zealand waters was examined. Size at maturity for both sexes was about 700 mm TL. Litter size was usually two. The sex ratio of embryos was 1:1. The right ovary ovulated 50–100 ova, 4–8 mm in diameter, and 30–80 ova were enclosed in each egg capsule. Only one embryo developed from the many ova in each egg capsule, the other undeveloped ova were ingested and passed to an external yolk sac which formed the yolk supply for the developing embryo.  相似文献

Respiratory constraints on the structure of single eggs andegg masses have affected the mode of amphibian reproductionin water and in air. Aquatic eggs generally require less oxygen,develop faster, and hatch earlier, but these characteristicsare related to small ovum size. A comparison of two speciesof aquatic and terrestrial breeding frogs with similarly sizedova shows no differences in hatching stage, maximum rate ofoxygen uptake, oxygen conductance of the egg capsule, or Po2difference across the capsule. However, the aquatic speciesdevelops about 2.4 times faster and tolerates lower environmentalPo2, suggesting adaptation for development in ephemeral water.Modelling of diffusive oxygen transport into a single aquaticegg shows that a large amount of jelly (or a boundary layer)around the capsule may not greatly restrict gas exchange, ifthe inner radius of the capsule is large. However, gelatinousegg masses that contain other embryos that compete for oxygenare therefore limited in size, unless the eggs are ventilatedby convection of water among them. Aquatic egg are often suspendedin masses above the substrate, promoting oxygen movement intothe mass from all directions. Terrestrial egg masses are morediffusion limited, because gravity and surface tension collapsethem, preventing convection between the eggs, and restrictingthe source for oxygen diffusion. Terrestrial embryos are oftenlarger than their aquatic counterparts and have higher demandsfor oxygen. Terrestrial conditions have selected for adaptationsthat reduce respiratory competition between embryos, for example,separating of embryos by large volumes of jelly or reducingthe number of eggs in a clutch. 对乌骨鸡胚胎发育过程中卵内各组成成分(蛋清、蛋黄、胚胎)在不同胚龄(即入孵的第0、3、6、9、12、15、18d和出壳)时蛋白质、脂肪含量变化进行测定与分析.结果表明:在不同胚龄时,蛋清中蛋白质含量显著高于蛋黄,蛋黄中脂肪含量始终高于蛋清;而胚胎中的蛋白质、脂肪逐渐增加。另外,胚胎发育过程中胚胎蛋白质的主要来源是蛋黄中的蛋白质,说明蛋黄是禽类胚胎发育过程中营养需要的主要来源。  相似文献

I examined the effects of development, hatching, and oxygen availability on external gill loss in red-eyed tree frogs, Agalychnis callidryas. Under natural conditions, the arboreal embryos maintained large external gills until hatching, which occurred from 5-8 d after oviposition. At hatching, when tadpoles entered the water, external gills began to regress. In older hatchlings this process was extremely rapid. Gill circulation was lost on average within 16 min and sometimes within 5 min. Gills often regressed completely in under 2 h. Younger hatchlings reduced gill circulation, shortened and adducted their gills, then resumed normal circulation for some time after hatching; half had completely lost external gills within 24 h. Experimentally increasing the area of egg surface exposed to the air induced loss of external gills in unhatched embryos. Older hatchlings in hypoxic water without access to air maintained their external gills. This suggests that loss of external gills is a response to increased oxygen availability, rather than a response to hatching per se. Extended maintenance of external gills by large, late-hatching embryos may facilitate continued rapid development in closely packed eggs.  相似文献

Lipid droplets are considered one of the most important energy sources in lepidopteran eggs during late embryogenesis, but the process of their incorporation into the embryo is as yet unknown. The present study focused on the process of transition of lipid droplets from the extraembryonic yolk to the embryo of the silkworm Bombyx mori, using morphological and biochemical approaches. The morphological study revealed that the incorporation of lipid droplets from the extraembryonic yolk into the embryo occurs at three points and in three different ways during the development of the embryo. Some lipid droplets were translocated directly from the extraembryonic yolk to the embryo before the blastokinesis stage. However, the majority of lipid droplets together with the other components of the extraembryonic yolk were incorporated in the embryo via both morphogenetic inclusion during dorsal closure and ingestion of the extraembyonic yolk by the developing caterpillar prior to hatching. Similar results were obtained from the biochemical study. Thus, we propose that there are three steps in the incorporation of lipid droplets from the extraembryonic yolk into the embryo. In addition, morphological and biochemical data concerning the total amount of lipid droplets in the egg suggested that lipid droplets were mainly consumed during late embryogenesis, seeming to synchronize with tracheal development.  相似文献

Histochemical and immunohistochemical study was carried out on nitrinergic innervation and neuroendocrine system in the gill epithelium of the abyssal fish Coelorhynchus coelorhynchus. The results showed that nNOS-positive nerve fibers, originating from the branchial arch were present in the subepithelial tissue of branchial primary filament. nNOS-positive neuroendocrine cells were also present in the primary filaments and secondary lamellae. Numerous mucous cells in the gill epithelium were AB/PAS-positive, while sialic acid was absent as confirmed by neuraminidase reaction and WGA lectin histochemistry. The mucus compounds in abyssal teleost fish are different from those found in pelagic species, being related to their living conditions. In abyssal species, greater numbers of chloride and neuroendocrine cells are involved in the movement of water and electrolytes. Neuroendocrine cells possess oxygen receptors which mediate the cardiovascular and ventilatory response to oxygen deficiency, as reported in teleost species. Besides, NO contributes through nervous stimulation to the regulation of vascular tone and blood circulation in the gill.  相似文献

The external gills of anuran amphibians are transient structures, covered by the development of the operculum and regressing soon afterwards. Their functional role has been regarded as equivocal. However, detailed morphological analysis has been limited. Analysis of 21 species from six families using scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed diversity at the anatomical and cellular levels in extent and length of gill filaments, numbers of surface ciliated cells, width of water‐blood barrier distance, and evidence of gill motility. The most highly developed external gills were found in species with delayed hatching, such as Phyllomedusa trinitatis, or in species in which hatchlings hang from the surface film of temporary ponds, such as Phrynohyas venulosa in which gills added 26–38% to body surface area. In one family, the bufonids, all four species examined had poorly developed gills, but in other families where we examined several species, the hylids and leptodactylids, there was considerable diversity of external gills, suggesting flexible adaptation to incubation and hatching environment. 采用扫描电镜和光学解剖镜,对黑龙江水域怀头鲇(Silirus soldatovi)成熟卵膜层次构造和受精卵胚胎发育过程中卵膜形态结构变化进行观察,并比较未脱黏和人工脱黏卵受精卵膜的表面超微结构变化.结果显示,受精卵膜的胶膜表面由一层薄而致密的物质组成,上有微孔构造.未脱黏受精卵膜表面胶膜光滑致密,多孔隙,内有小梁相连,随胚胎发育逐渐膨胀、展开、变薄,破膜期自然脱落.人工脱黏几乎全部脱去鱼卵的胶膜层,从而使卵失去黏性.脱去胶膜层的受精卵膜表面由不规则的颗粒状结构紧密嵌合而成,表面粗糙,胚胎发育过程中颗粒形状变化不大,但颗粒层逐渐变薄而且疏松,直至胚胎破膜而出:胚胎发育后期颗粒层有过早脱落和破洞出现.同时对活体鱼卵进行连续比较观察,讨论了卵膜结构及动态变化与孵化效果的关系.  相似文献

The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration. For that, the gills were analysed using a stereoscopic microscope for morphometric studies, and structural and ultrastructural studies were carried out to compare the four branchial arches. Furthermore, two immunohistochemical techniques were used to locate and identify the presence of a Na+/K+ pump. The characterization of the potential for cell proliferation of this organ was assessed using an anti-PCNA antibody. The results show that gills of C. paleatus present some characteristics related to its diet and lifestyle, such as the limited development of gill rakers and the abundance of taste buds. In addition, other special features associated with the environment and bimodal breathing were observed: scarce and absent mucous cells (MCs) in the gill filaments and branchial lamellae, respectively, and the localization of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) covering the basal third of the branchial lamellae, which reduces the gill respiratory area. A peculiar finding in the gill epithelium of this armoured catfish was the presence of mononuclear cells with sarcomeres similar to myoid cells, whose functional importance should be determined in future studies. Finally, in C. paleatus, the interlamellar space of gill filaments is an important site for cell turnover and ionoregulation; the latter function is also performed by the branchial lamellae.  相似文献

Oxygen stress can slow development, induce hatching, and kill eggs. Terrestrial anamniote embryos face a potential conflict between oxygen uptake and water loss. We measured oxygen levels within eggs to characterize the respiratory environment for embryos of the red-eyed treefrog, Agalychnis callidryas, a Neotropical frog with arboreal egg masses and plastic hatching timing. Perivitelline oxygen partial pressure (Po2) was extremely variable both within and among eggs. Po2 increased with air-exposed surface of the egg and declined over the developmental period before hatching competence. Through the plastic hatching period, however, average Po2 was stable despite continued rapid development. Development was synchronous across a wide range of perivitelline Po2 (0.5-16.5 kPa), and hatching-competent embryos tolerated Po2 as low as 0.5 kPa without hatching. The variation in Po2 measured over short periods of time within individual eggs was as great as that measured across development or surface exposure, including sharp transients associated with embryo movements. There was also a strong gradient of Po2 across the egg from superficial to deep positions. Ciliary circulation of fluid within the egg is clearly insufficient to keep it mixed. Embryos may maintain development under hypoxic conditions by strategic positioning of respiratory surfaces, particularly external gills, to exploit the patchy distribution of oxygen within their eggs.  相似文献

巨须裂腹鱼(Schizothorax macropogon)隶属裂腹鱼亚科, 裂腹鱼属, 是西藏特有经济鱼类, 因过度捕捞, 其种群数量和分布面积下降, 在2009年中国红色名录评为“濒危”等级。研究通过研究巨须裂腹鱼早期发育特征, 旨在为该鱼的科学养护提供技术支撑。结果表明: 巨须裂腹鱼受精卵直径3.0—3.2 mm, 遇水开始具有微黏性, 随后脱黏, 经过准备卵裂阶段、卵裂阶段、囊胚阶段、原肠胚阶段、神经胚阶段、器官分化阶段、 孵化阶段, 在水温10℃的条件下, 经过460.67h孵化出来。初孵仔鱼体长9.9—1.1 mm, 心率48—50次/min, 鳃盖骨清晰可见, 下颌原基、尾鳍下骨原基可见。第2天鼻凹出现; 第3天肝胰脏原基出现; 第4天鳃耙、肩带原基出现; 第6天仔鱼上下颌开始张合; 第7天心血管分化结束, 仔鱼开始进入混合营养期; 第14天鳔一室和体侧色素带形成; 第26天肋骨原基出现; 第35天鳔二室出现, 卵黄囊耗尽; 第63天背鳍分化结束; 第83天臀鳍分化结束。巨须裂腹鱼胚胎具有独特的发育时序: 体节的出现先于胚孔封闭, 是对高原环境的一种适应和进化。  相似文献

The amylases were studied in the yolk of fertilized eggs and in the pancreases of the embryos of domestic fowls. The amylase activity in the yolk increased markedly from 13 days of incubation until hatching, but the activity decreased when the embryos were taken out of the eggs. The isoamylases in the yolk and in the pancreas of the embryo were identical electrophoretically. The amylase occurs mainly in the pancreas of the embryo. We think that the increase in amylase activity in the yolk of fertilized eggs during incubation depends upon the accumulation of pancreatic amylase synthesized by the developing embryo in the egg.  相似文献

The ciliated epithelium of amphibian embryos produces a current within the perivitelline fluid of the egg that is important in the convective transfer of oxygen to the embryo's surface. The effects of convection on oxygen uptake and the immediate oxygen environment of the embryo were investigated in Pseudophryne bibronii. Gelatin was injected into the eggs, setting the perivitelline fluid and preventing convective flow. Oxygen consumption rate (M(.)o?) and the oxygen partial pressure (Po?) of the perivitelline fluid were measured in eggs with and without this treatment. M(.)o? decreased in eggs without convection at Gosner stages 17-19 under normoxia. The lack of convection also shifted embryos from regulators to conformers as environmental Po? decreased. A strong Po? gradient formed within the eggs when convection was absent, demonstrating that the loss of convection is equivalent to decreasing the inner radius of the capsule, an important factor in gas exchange, by 25%. M(.)o? also declined in stage 26-27 embryos without cilia-driven convection, although not to the extent of younger stages, because of muscular movements and a greater skin surface area in direct contact with the inner capsule wall. This study demonstrates the importance of convective flow within the perivitelline fluid to gas exchange. Convection is especially important in the middle of embryonic development, when the perivitelline space has formed, creating a barrier to gas exchange, but the embryos have yet to develop muscular movements or have a large surface area exposed directly to the jelly capsule.  相似文献

Encapsulation of developing embryos imposes potential restrictions, because the capsule wall must allow for adequate inward diffusion of oxygen and for increased diffusion of oxygen as metabolic demand increases with continued development. Samples of egg capsules from the gastropod Crepipatella dilatata were used to document surface characteristics, composition of the different capsule wall layers, and alterations in wall thickness during development. The diffusion coefficient and capsule wall permeability were determined experimentally for capsules containing embryos at different developmental stages. We also determined oxygen consumption rates for various embryonic stages and for nurse eggs, which provide food for embryos during development. The capsule wall of C. dilatata possesses 2 differentiated layers: the external capsular wall (ECW) and the internal capsular wall (ICW). The ECW is compact and fibrous, features that remain invariable during development, and lacks surface features that might make some portions of the capsule wall more permeable to oxygen than others. On the other hand, the ICW is initially spongy and thick, but significantly decreases in thickness over time, particularly before the embryos begin feeding on nurse eggs. Although the capsule wall is a serious barrier to diffusion, permeability to oxygen increases over time by 112% due to the dramatic thinning of the inner capsule wall layer. Nurse eggs consume oxygen but at very low rates, supporting the idea that they correspond to living embryonic cells that have stopped their development. Respiration measurements indicated that embryos are initially supplied with enough oxygen within the egg capsules to carry out the activities characteristic of embryogenesis, even though the capsular walls show their maximum thickness and lowest permeability at this time. However, as the embryo develops its velum and becomes more active, capsule wall thickness decreases and capsule permeability to oxygen increases. Correspondingly, the oxygen demands of metamorphosed but still encapsulated specimens are approximately 135% higher than those of pre-metamorphosed sibling embryos.  相似文献
