The purpose of this study was to apply the session rating of perceived exertion (RPE) method, which is known to work with aerobic training, to resistance training. Ten men (26.1 +/- 10.2 years) and 10 women (22.2 +/- 1.8 years), habituated to both aerobic and resistance training, performed 3 x 30 minutes aerobic training bouts on the cycle ergometer at intensities of 56%, 71%, and 83% Vo(2) peak and then rated the global intensity using the session RPE technique (e.g., 0-10) 30 minutes after the end of the session. They also performed 3 x 30 minutes resistance exercise bouts with 2 sets of 6 exercises at 50% (15 repetitions), 70% (10 repetitions), and 90% (4 repetitions) of 1 repetition maximum (1RM). After each set the exercisers rated the intensity of that exercise using the RPE scale. Thirty minutes after the end of the bout they rated the intensity of the whole session and of only the lifting components of the session, using the session RPE method. The rated intensity of exercise increased with the %Vo(2) peak and the %1RM. There was a general correspondence between the relative intensity (%Vo(2) peak and % 1RM) and the session RPE. Between different types of resistance exercise at the same relative intensity, the average RPE after each lift varied widely. The resistance training session RPE increased as the intensity increased despite a decrease in the total work performed (p < 0.05). Mean RPE and session RPE-lifting only also grew with increased intensity (p < 0.05). In many cases, the mean RPE, session RPE, and session RPE- lifting only measurements were different at given exercise intensities (p < 0.05). The session RPE appears to be a viable method for quantitating the intensity of resistance training, generally comparable to aerobic training. However, the session RPE may meaningfully underestimate the average intensity rated immediately after each set.  相似文献

The aim of these studies was to provide reference data on intersubject variability and reproducibility of diffusion tensor imaging. Healthy volunteers underwent imaging on two occasions using the same 3T Siemens Verio magnetic resonance scanner. At each session two identical diffusion tensor sequences were obtained along with standard structural imaging. Fractional anisotropy, apparent diffusion coefficient, axial and radial diffusivity maps were created and regions of interest applied in normalised space. The baseline data from all 26 volunteers were used to calculate the intersubject variability, while within session and between session reproducibility were calculated from all the available data. The reproducibility of measurements were used to calculate the overall and within session 95% prediction interval for zero change. The within and between session reproducibility data were lower than the values for intersubject variability, and were different across the brain. The regional mean (range) coefficient of variation figures for within session reproducibility were 2.1 (0.9–5.5%), 1.2 (0.4–3.9%), 1.2 (0.4–3.8%) and 1.8 (0.4–4.3%) for fractional anisotropy, apparent diffusion coefficient, axial and radial diffusivity, and were lower than between session reproducibility measurements (2.4 (1.1–5.9%), 1.9 (0.7–5.7%), 1.7 (0.7–4.7%) and 2.4 (0.9–5.8%); p<0.001). The calculated overall and within session 95% prediction intervals for zero change were similar. This study provides additional reference data concerning intersubject variability and reproducibility of diffusion tensor imaging conducted within the same imaging session and different imaging sessions. These data can be utilised in interventional studies to quantify change within a single imaging session, or to assess the significance of change in longitudinal studies of brain injury and disease.  相似文献

Heart rate (HR), freezing score, and motor component were estimated during acoustic startle (ASR) habituation (two sessions with 24-hour interval, 10 trials in a session). It was shown that rats previously exposed to the experimental context (once for 5 min 24 h before training) demonstrated HR decrease in response to the first stimulus and tachycardia in response to the 4th-10th stimuli during the first session. The interstimulus HR declined from the 4th to the 6th trials. The same profile of cardiovascular response was observed in this group at the beginning of the second session with the following (to the 7th trial) habituation of tachycardia. These rats didn't demonstrate the intertrial HR decrease during the second session. Nonadapted rats responded by bradycardia to the 1st and 2nd trials of the first session. The response didn't change for tachycardia with continuation of stimuli presentation. Tachycardia appeared only in response to the 7th-10th trials of the second session and didn't habituate. The intertrial HR level decreased in this group only during the second session. The results are discussed in terms of contextual latent inhibition of the cardiac acoustic startle response.  相似文献

The 1-repetition maximum test (1RM) has been widely used to assess maximal strength. However, to improve accuracy in assessing maximal strength, several sessions of the 1RM test are recommended. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of previous resistance training experience on the reliability of 1RM test. Thirty men were assigned to the following 2 groups according to their previous resistance training experience: no previous resistance training experience (NOEXP) and more than 24 months of resistance training experience (EXP). All subjects performed the 1RM tests in bench press and squat in 4 sessions on distinct days. There was a significant session × group effect in bench press (F = 3.09; p < 0.03) and squat (F = 2.76; p < 0.05) showing that only the NOEXP increased maximal strength between the sessions. Significant increases (p < 0.05) in maximal strength occurred in the NOEXP between session 1 and the other sessions in bench press (session 1 vs. 2 = +3.8%; session 1 vs. 3 = +7.4%; session 1 vs. 4 = +10.1%), and squat (session 1 vs. 2 = +7.6%; session 1 vs. 3 = +10.1%; session 1 vs. 4 = +11.2%). Moreover, in bench press, maximal strength in sessions 3 and 4 were significantly higher than in session 2. The results of the present study suggest that the reliability of the 1RM test is influenced by the subject's previous experience in resistance training. Subjects without experience in resistance training require more practice and familiarization and show greater increases in maximal strength between sessions than subjects with previous experience in resistance training.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to determine whether females exhibiting the Type A behavior pattern would exert greater effort and work to higher levels of physiological fatigue in a self-motivated ergometer test. Twenty female subjects, half of them Type A and the other half Type B, were administered an incremental ergometer test to determine their peak oxygen consumption value. On the first experimental session no experimenter encouragement was given to the subjects. Consequently the test measured physical motivation levels. During a second laboratory session, each subject was continuously encouraged by the experimenter to maintain exercising until she was truly incapable of further work. The highest rate of oxygen extraction during this latter session was considered the subject's maximum oxygen consumption (i.e., VO2 max). Type A and B subjects were compared in the nonmotivated testing session (experimental session 1) to their "true" individual capacities (maximum oxygen consumption demonstrated in experimental session 2). ANOVAs indicated no significant differences in self-initiated competitive behavior during a physical stressor.  相似文献

To evaluate the heart rate response, emotion and changes in anxiety and anger levels after exposure to unpleasant pictures from the International Assessment Pictures System (IAPS) compared with neutral picture exposure in healthy individuals. Forty participants (23 women) visited the laboratory on two occasions. State anger and state anxiety levels were evaluated pre- and post-visualization of a set of IAPS pictures and heart rate was monitored during exposure. Two different picture sets were utilized—one with neutral pictures (that served as the control) and the other with unpleasant pictures. State anxiety and state anger were higher in post-unpleasant session for women than before (p?<?0.001). For men, only state anxiety was higher in the post-unpleasant session (p?<?0.001). State anxiety (p?=?0.004) and state anger (p?<?0.001) post-unpleasant session was higher for women than in men. The pleasure and dominance domains were lower in the unpleasant session for both men and women (p?<?0.001), and the arousal domain was higher for both men and women (p?<?0.001) than in the neutral session. In the unpleasant session, arousal was higher (p?=?0.004), and dominance was lower (p?<?0.001) among women than among men, but no difference in pleasure was found (p?>?0.05). For women, average heart rate was higher on unpleasant session, compared to neutral (p?=?0.01), but not for men (p?>?0.05). Women are more sensitive and react strongly to unpleasant picture exposure. The IAPS unpleasant session was not able to induce anger levels in men.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the rhythmic movements or cues enhance the anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) of gait initiation. Healthy humans initiated gait in response to an auditory start cue (third cue). A first auditory cue was given 8?s before the start cue, and a second auditory cue was given 3?s before the start cue. The participants performed the rhythmic medio-lateral weight shift (ML-WS session), rhythmic anterior-posterior weight shift (AP-WS session), or rhythmic arm swing (arm swing session) in the time between the first and second cues. In the rhythmic cues session, rhythmic auditory cues with a frequency of 1?Hz were given in this time. In the stationary session, the participants maintained stationary stance in this time. The APA and initial step movement preceded by those rhythmic movements or cues were compared with those in the stationary session. The temporal characteristics of the initial step movement of the gait initiation were not changed by the rhythmic movements or cues. The medio-lateral displacement of the APA in the ML-WS and arm swing sessions was significantly greater than that in the stationary session. The anterior–posterior displacement of the APA in the rhythmic cues and arm swing sessions was significantly greater than that in the stationary session. Taken together, the rhythmic movements and cues enhance the APA of gait initiation. The present finding may be a clue or motive for the future investigation for using rhythmic movements or cues as the preparatory activity to enlarge the small APA of gait initiation in the patients with Parkinson’s disease.  相似文献

After training under a variable-interval 60-s schedule of reinforcement, four rats were exposed to 30-min extinction tests, which occurred either at the start or at the end of the session (each session being 50-min long). Response rate in extinction decreased when the extinction test occurred at the end of the session, but first increased and then decreased when the extinction test occurred at the start of the session. Consistent with other recent results, this finding suggests that some variable, other than reinforcement, contributes to early-session increases in responding.  相似文献

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) involves exposing minimally dressed participants to very cold air (injecting liquid nitrogen with temperature −195 °C), either in a specially designed chamber (cryo-chamber) or cabin (cryo-cabin), for a short period of time. The aim of this study was to examine the actual temperature of the air in the cryo-cabin at different locations throughout the cabin by using human subjects and a manikin. Additionally, we monitored skin temperature before and for 60 min after the cryo-cabin session. Twelve subjects completed one 3 min cryo-cabin session. Temperature next to the skin was assessed during the session, while the skin temperature was monitored before, 3 min after and every 10 min for 60 min after completing the session. There was a statistically significant interaction (time×position) for temperature among the different body parts during the WBC, and for skin temperature among different body parts after the cryo-cabin session. Statistically significant time effects during and following cryo-cabin session were present for all body parts. We showed that actual temperature in the cryo-cabin is substantially different from the one reported by the manufacturer. Thermal response after cryo-cabin session is similar to response observed after cryo-chamber cold exposure reported in previously published studies. This could be of great practical value as cryo-cabins are less expensive and easier to use compared to cryo-chambers.  相似文献

There have been several studies which have tried to clarify the neural mechanisms of fatigue sensation; however fatigue sensation has multiple aspects. We hypothesized that past experience related to fatigue sensation is an important factor which contributes to future formation of fatigue sensation through the transfer to memories that are located within specific brain structures. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms of fatigue sensation related to memory. In the present study, we investigated the neural activity caused by re-experiencing the fatigue sensation that had been experienced during a fatigue-inducing session. Thirteen healthy volunteers participated in fatigue and non-fatigue experiments in a crossover fashion. In the fatigue experiment, they performed a 2-back test session for 40 min to induce fatigue sensation, a rest session for 15 min to recover from fatigue, and a magnetoencephalography (MEG) session in which they were asked to re-experience the state of their body with fatigue that they had experienced in the 2-back test session. In the non-fatigue experiment, the participants performed a free session for 15 min, a rest session for 15 min, and an MEG session in which they were asked to re-experience the state of their body without fatigue that they had experienced in the free session. Spatial filtering analyses of oscillatory brain activity showed that the delta band power in the left Brodmann’s area (BA) 39, alpha band power in the right pulvinar nucleus and the left BA 40, and beta band power in the left BA 40 were lower when they re-experienced the fatigue sensation than when they re-experienced the fatigue-free sensation, indicating that these brain regions are related to re-experiencing the fatigue sensation. Our findings may help clarify the neural mechanisms underlying fatigue sensation.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine power performance in jump squats when using the complex and contrast training methods. Eleven (n = 11) women participated in a familiarization session and in three randomly ordered testing sessions. One session involved completing sets of power exercises (jump squats) before sets of half squats (traditional method). The second session involved sets of half squats before sets of jump squats (complex method). A third session involved the alternation of sets of half squats and jump squats (contrast method). No significant difference in jump squat performance between each of the training methods was found. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the first set of each session, with the complex method having a significantly lower peak power. Further, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in performance changes between the higher and lower strength groups, with the higher strength group having a greater improvement in performance using the contrast training method compared with the traditional method. It was concluded that contrast training is advantageous for increasing power output but only for athletes with relatively high strength levels.  相似文献

The effects of the odors of lavender and cloves on three cognitiveskills—memory, affective reaction to the experiment andmood—of college students are studied in two sessions,separated by 1 week. Essential oils of lavender or cloves werediffused throughout the laboratory, or no odor was presented.In the second session, approximately the same number of subjectsfrom each odor condition of the first session influenced arithmeticreasoning in the first session (3 x 3 factorial design). Lavenderadversely influenced arithmetic reasoning in the first session.At the same time, subjects' affective reactions to the experimentwere more favorable with lavender present, though cloves decreasedwillingness-to-return. In the second session, effects on cognitivefunctioning were not evident, and effects on affect were complex:relative to no-odor controls, groups that had odor in at leastone session expressed negative affect and unwillingness-to-return.Discussion concerned implications for the claim that lavenderis physiologically relaxing, the surprising absence of an effectof an effect of odor change on memory, and possible interactionsof odor and personality factors.  相似文献

Short-term (90 s) effects of the complex acoustic signal (CAS) with ultrasonic components on the development of defensive conditioned reflex of two-way active avoidance in a shuttle-box were studied in female Wistar rats. The learning ability of rats was measured on a scale designed in our laboratory. It was shown that CAS stimulation triggered an audiogenic seizure of different strength in 59% of animals. The CAS was extremely stressful for Wistar rats: it prevented the active avoidance learning in early terms after its application (the first training session in 4 or 6 days). This effect did not depend on the presence or intensity of audiogenic seizures during CAS. In the second training session in 9 days (the first session was in 4 days), learning was impaired as compared to control without CAS. However, during repeated training procedure 1.5 months after the CAS (the first session in 6 days), rats rapidly reached the criterion of learning (10 consecutive avoidance reactions). On the other hand, if the CAS was presented with different time lags (immediately, in 3 or in 45 days) after the first training session, the ability of animals to learn during the second session was not impaired both in early and late terms after exposure to the stressor. The results suggest that exposure to CAS prevents development of short-term memory but does not affect consolidation process and long-term memory.  相似文献

It has been found that one session of intense muscle strength training decreases muscle strength temporarily and causes neuromuscular fatigue in the trained muscles, but little attention has been given to the effects of neuromuscular fatigue on the other components of motor performance. The purpose of this study was to examine in normal healthy volunteers the effects of a 1-h strength training session on the motor performance of the upper extremity, including reaction time, speed of movement, tapping speed and coordination. Group of 30 healthy female volunteers, aged 29-47 years, were randomly divided into sub-groups, (A and B, n = 15 per group). Both groups first completed a set of motor performance tests on 3 consecutive days. On the 4th day, group A carried out a 1-h muscle strength training session of the upper extremities. Isometric muscle strengths and electromyogram (EMG) data were recorded before the training session. Immediately after the training session the same recordings were repeated, and additional motor performance tests were also performed. Group B carried out only the motor performance tests. The groups exchanged programmes the following week. The 1-h strength training session decreased the isometric muscle strength of wrist flexion by 18% (P < 0.001) and extension by 18% (P < 0.001) in group A, while in group B flexion strength decreased by 19% (P < 0.001) and extension strength by 17% (P < 0.001). All the measured EMG activations also decreased in both groups. There were no statistically significant differences in the results of the motor performance tests between the mean values of the three baseline measurements and the values recorded after the training session. The result was surprising, but straightforward; neuromuscular fatigue induced by a 1-h strength training session of the upper extremities had no effect on the motor performance functions of the hand, as indicated by reaction times, speed of movement, tapping speed and coordination, in these normal healthy female volunteers.  相似文献

The aim of these studies was to provide reference data on intersubject variability and reproducibility of metabolite ratios for Choline/Creatine (Cho/Cr), N-acetyl aspartate/Choline (NAA/Cho) and N-acetyl aspartate/Creatine (NAA/Cr), and individual signal-intensity normalised metabolite concentrations of NAA, Cho and Cr. Healthy volunteers underwent imaging on two occasions using the same 3T Siemens Verio magnetic resonance scanner. At each session two identical Metabolic Imaging and Data Acquisition Software (MIDAS) sequences were obtained along with standard structural imaging. Metabolite maps were created and regions of interest applied in normalised space. The baseline data from all 32 volunteers were used to calculate the intersubject variability, while within session and between session reproducibility were calculated from all the available data. The reproducibility of measurements were used to calculate the overall and within session 95% prediction interval for zero change. The within and between session reproducibility data were lower than the values for intersubject variability, and were variable across the different brain regions. The within and between session reproducibility measurements were similar for Cho/Cr, NAA/Choline, Cho and Cr (11.8%, 11.4%, 14.3 and 10.6% vs. 11.9%, 11.4%, 13.5% and 10.5% respectively), but for NAA/Creatine and NAA between session reproducibility was lower (9.3% and 9.1% vs. 10.1% and 9.9%; p <0.05). This study provides additional reference data that can be utilised in interventional studies to quantify change within a single imaging session, or to assess the significance of change in longitudinal studies of brain injury and disease.  相似文献

We employed an associative learning paradigm to test the hypothesis that exercise hyperpnea in humans arises from learned responses forged by prior experience. Twelve subjects undertook a "conditioning" and a "nonconditioning" session on separate days, with order of performance counterbalanced among subjects. In both sessions, subjects performed repeated bouts of 6 min of treadmill exercise, each separated by 5 min of rest. The only difference between sessions was that all the second-to-penultimate runs of the conditioning session were performed with added dead space in the breathing circuit. Cardiorespiratory responses during the first and last runs (the "control" and "test" runs) were compared for each session. Steady-state exercise end-tidal PCO(2) was significantly lower (P = 0.003) during test than during control runs for both sessions (dropping by 1.8 +/- 2 and 1.4 +/- 3 Torr during conditioning and nonconditioning sessions, respectively). This and all other test-control run differences tended to be greater during the first session performed regardless of session type. Our data provide no support for the hypothesis implicating associative learning processes in the ventilatory response to exercise in humans.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to clarify how foot deformation affects the relationship between triceps surae muscle-tendon unit (MTU) length and ankle joint angle. For six women and six men a series of sagittal magnetic resonance (MR) images of the right foot were taken, and changes in MTU length (the displacement of the calcaneal tuberosity), foot arch angle, and ankle joint angle were measured. In the passive session, each subject's ankle joint was secured at 10° dorsiflexed position, neutral position (NP), and 10° and 20° plantar flexed positions while MR images were acquired. In the active session, each subject was requested to perform submaximal isometric plantar flexions (30%, 60%, and 80% of voluntary maximum) at NP. The changes in MTU length in each trial were estimated by two different formulae reported previously. The changes of the measured MTU length as a function of ankle joint angles observed in all trials of the active session were significantly (p<0.05) larger than corresponding values in the passive session and by the estimation formulae. In the passive session, MTU length changes were significantly smaller than the estimated values when the ankle was plantar flexed. The foot arch angle increased as the contraction level increased from rest (117 ± 4°) to 80% (125 ± 3°), and decreased as the ankle was positioned further into plantar flexion in the passive session (115 ± 3°). These results indicate that foot deformation profoundly affects the triceps surae MTU length-ankle joint angle relationship during plantar flexion.  相似文献

J Strength Cond Res 26(10): 2721-2728, 2012-Session ratings of perceived exertion (session RPE) are commonly used to assess global training intensity for team sports. However, there is little research quantifying the intensity of field-based training protocols for speed development. The study's aim was to determine the session RPE of popular training protocols (free sprint [FST], resisted sprint [RST], and plyometrics [PT]) designed to improve sprint acceleration over 10 m in team sport athletes. Twenty-seven men (age = 23.3 ± 4.7 years; mass = 84.5 ± 8.9 kg; height = 1.83 ± 0.07 m) were divided into 3 groups according to 10-m velocity. Training consisted of an incremental program featuring two 1-hour sessions per week for 6 weeks. Subjects recorded session RPE 30 minutes post training using the Borg category-ratio 10 scale. Repeated measures analysis of variance found significant (p < 0.05) changes in sprint velocity and session RPE over 6 weeks. All groups significantly increased 0- to 5-m velocity and 0- to 10-m velocity by 4-7%, with no differences between groups. There were no significant differences in session RPE between the groups, suggesting that protocols were matched for intensity. Session RPE significantly increased over the 6 weeks for all groups, ranging from 3.75 to 5.50. This equated to intensities of somewhat hard to hard. Post hoc testing revealed few significant weekly increases, suggesting that session RPE may not be sensitive to weekly load increases in sprint and plyometric training programs. Another explanation, however, could be that the weekly load increments used were not great enough to increase perceived exertion. Nonetheless, the progressive overload of each program was sufficient to improve 10-m sprint performance. The session RPE values from the present study could be used to assess workload for speed training periodization within a team sports conditioning program.  相似文献

The amnesic effects of excitotoxic lesions of the rat retrosplenial cortex (RS) and hippocampus (HPC) in the spontaneous object recognition (SOR) performance were investigated. The SOR test consisted of the sample-exposure session(s) and a test session. First, to test retrograde amnesia, rats received four sample-exposure sessions within a day at 4 weeks and 1 day before the surgery, respectively. In the test sessions conducted 1 week after the surgery, both lesion groups showed a temporally ungraded retrograde amnesia. Second, to test anterograde amnesia, 1- and 4-week retention intervals were inserted between the four sample-exposure sessions and the test session. The RS-lesioned rats showed a retention interval-dependent impairment in the test sessions, while the HPC-lesioned rats showed an impairment regardless of the retention interval. Finally, to test short-term recognition memory, 5- or 30-min delay was interposed between the single sample-exposure session and the test session. Both lesion groups performed normally irrespective of the delay length. These results suggest that both the RS and HPC are important for long-term object recognition memory, but these areas have different roles in it. ? 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
