The large-scale green tides, consisting mainly of Ulva prolifera, have invaded the coastal zones of western Yellow Sea each year since 2008, resulting in tremendous impacts on the local environment and economy. A large number of studies have been conducted to investigate the physiological traits of U. prolifera to explain its dominance in the green tides. However, little has been reported regarding the response of U. prolifera to changing environmental factors via morphological variation. In our experiments, we found remarkable morphological acclimation of U. prolifera to various temperature (20 and 25 °C) and salinity (10, 20, and 30) conditions. U. prolifera had more, but shorter branches when they were cultured at lower temperature and salinity conditions. To investigate the significance of these morphological variations in its acclimation to changes of environmental factors, physiological and biochemical traits of U. prolifera grown under different conditions were measured. Higher temperature increased the relative growth rate while salinity did not affect it. On the other hand, higher temperature did not enhance the net photosynthetic rate whilst lower salinity did. The increased net photosynthetic rate at lower salinity conditions could be attributed to more photosynthetic pigments—chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids—in thalli due to there being more branches at lower salinity conditions. Increased numbers of branches and thus an increased intensity of thalli may be helpful to protect thalli from increased osmotic pressure caused by lower salinity, but it led to more shading. In order to capture enough light when being shaded, thalli of U. prolifera synthesized more photosynthetic pigments at lower salinity levels. In addition, higher temperature increased nitrate reductase activity and soluble protein content but variations in salinity did not impose any effect on them. Our results demonstrate conclusively that U. prolifera can acclimatize in the laboratory to the changes of environmental factors (salinity and temperature) by morphology-driven physiological and biochemical variation. We suggest that the morphological plasticity of U. prolifera may be an important factor for it to outcompete other algal species in a changing ocean.  相似文献

Transgenerational phenotypic plasticity under future atmospheric conditions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Organisms often exhibit transgenerational phenotypic changes in response to an increased risk of parasitism or predation. Shifts in global atmospheric composition could modify these phenotypic effects through changes in either nutrient quantity/quality or altered interactions with higher trophic levels. Here we show that future atmospheric conditions alter a natural enemy‐induced wing polyphenism in aphids. Winged offspring production by Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum aphids on goldenrod (Solidago canadensis var. scabra) does not differ in enriched CO2 and/or O3 atmospheres. However, proportionally more winged offspring are produced in response to search cues from both coccinellid predators (Coccinella septempunctata) and hymenopteran parasitoids (Aphidius polygonaphis) relative to plants not searched by natural enemies. Moreover, the magnitude of this response differs under enriched CO2 and O3 environments. Aphids produce more winged offspring in response to predators under elevated CO2, but produce more winged offspring in response to parasitoids under elevated O3. Thus, global atmospheric changes influence natural enemy‐mediated phenotypic expression, with potentially far‐reaching consequences for trophic dynamics.  相似文献

Tree-ring widths (RW), earlywood (EW) and latewood (LW) widths, the transition from early to latewood (T) and the occurrence of intra-annual density fluctuations in EW (E-ring) and in LW (L-ring), as well as the presence of resin canals in EW and LW, were analyzed in Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) from three sites in Spain and one in Slovenia to find out if the anatomical characteristics can provide additional seasonal climate–growth information from contrasted environmental conditions. Principal component analysis was applied to elucidate the relationship between the measured parameters and climate. Principal component factor PC1 proved to be related to parameters of EW and the climatic variables of winter-spring; PC2 to parameters of LW and climatic variables of summer–autumn; PC3 to conditions during transitions from humid to dry periods. The three PCs vary between sites and are determined by the climatic conditions during their formation. The study demonstrates that wood anatomical features may provide complementary information to that contained in tree-ring widths. Since such results are obtained on contrasting sites, it is likely that it may be generalized over the wide range of P. halepensis distribution representing a useful proxy for studies on a regional scale.  相似文献

Neuronal networks are balanced by mechanisms of homeostatic plasticity, which adjusts synaptic strength via molecular and morphological changes in the pre- and post-synapse. Here, we wondered whether the hyaluronic acid-based extracellular matrix (ECM) of the brain is involved in mechanisms of homeostatic plasticity. We hypothesized that the ECM, being rich in chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans such as brevican, which are suggested to stabilize synapses by their inhibitory effect on structural plasticity, must be remodelled to allow for structural and molecular changes during conditions of homeostatic plasticity. We found a high abundance of cleaved brevican fragments throughout the hippocampus and cortex and in neuronal cultures, with the strongest labelling in perineuronal nets on parvalbumin-positive interneurons. Using an antibody specific for a brevican fragment cleaved by the matrix metalloprotease ADAMTS4, we identified the enzyme as the main brevican-processing protease. Interestingly, we found ADAMTS4 largely associated with synapses. After inducing homeostatic plasticity in neuronal cell cultures by prolonged network inactivation, we found increased brevican processing at inhibitory as well as excitatory synapses, which is in line with the ADAMTS4 subcellular localization. Thus, the ECM is remodelled in conditions of homeostatic plasticity, which may liberate synapses to allow for a higher degree of structural plasticity.  相似文献

McNamara, K.J. 1994 10 15: Diversity of Cenozoic marsupiate echinoids as an environmental indicator. Marsupiate echinoids are today largely confined to the seas around Antarctica. Consequently, it has often been inferred that the presence of marsupiate echinoids in the fossil record is indicative of the former existence of low oceanic temperatures. In this study the distribution of marsupiate echinoids through the Cenozoic succession of southern Australia is compared with palaeo-temperature data to test this assumption. The analysis reveals that there is no positive correlation between high marsupiate echinoid diversity during the Cenozoic and low oceanic temperatures. An alternative hypothesis, based on life-history strategies, is investigated. This reveals that marsupiate echinoids show many characteristics typical of organisms with slow growth, long life spans and production of few, large offspring. It is suggested that the northward migration of Australia during the Cenozoic from an original high-latitude location in the early Cenozoic was accompanied by an increase in environmental instability in the southern Australian region in the late Cenozoic. This led to a consequent decrease in marsupiate echinoid diversity. During the Pliocene these direct brooding echinoids were replaced by non-brooders with pelagic lecithotrophic larvae, which dominate the southern coastal echinoid fauna of Australia today. The environmental stability experienced in southern Australia in the early Cenozoic persisted throughout the Cenozoic in the Antarctic region, particularly with regard to predictability of nutrient supply. The result has been the dominance of marsupiate echinoids in that region today. Temporal changes in the diversity of marsupiate echinoids in southern Australia therefore supports the view that their spatial and temporal distribution may be more closely correlated with aspects of their life-history strategy and environmental stability than with low temperature. A wind tunnel and an external microwave energy source formed the basis of an experimental technique to investigate many complex functional relationships between climatic parameters and leaf temperatures. The results of preliminary experimental plant-environment interactions are compared with published theoretical results obtained by solving the energy balance equation for a single leaf.  相似文献

Ocean acidification (OA) and the accompanying changes to carbonate concentrations are predicted to have especially negative impacts in the Southern Ocean where, as a result of colder temperatures, there will be shallowing of both the aragonite (ASH) and calcite saturation horizons (CSH). Echinoids are a dominant group of the Antarctic macrofauna which, because of their high‐Mg calcite skeleton, are particularly susceptible to changes in the ASH. Using published information on the bathymetric distributions of Antarctic echinoids, we show that the majority of heavily calcified echinoids have their lower bathymetric limit above a depth of ca. 3000 m, approximately the current depth of the CSH. Echinoids whose depth range extends below 3000 m generally have thin, weakly calcified tests and include species from the Order Holasteroida, and the Families Cidaridae and Schizasteridae. Examination of the reproductive mode of Antarctic echinoids shows that brooding, where calcification of the young occurs in the same CaCO3 environment as the mother, is primarily found at a depth above 3000 m. The predicted shallowing of the ASH and CSH under OA conditions is likely to negatively impact growth and reproduction of heavily calcified brooders in the Family Cidaridae, which may result in changes to bathymetric ranges, local population extinction, and associated losses in macrofaunal biodiversity. As with other calcified deep sea invertebrates, echinoids may be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of increased CO2 and OA in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Background

As Earth warms, temperate and subpolar marine species will increasingly shift their geographic ranges poleward. The endemic shelf fauna of Antarctica is especially vulnerable to climate-mediated biological invasions because cold temperatures currently exclude the durophagous (shell-breaking) predators that structure shallow-benthic communities elsewhere.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We used the Eocene fossil record from Seymour Island, Antarctic Peninsula, to project specifically how global warming will reorganize the nearshore benthos of Antarctica. A long-term cooling trend, which began with a sharp temperature drop ∼41 Ma (million years ago), eliminated durophagous predators—teleosts (modern bony fish), decapod crustaceans (crabs and lobsters) and almost all neoselachian elasmobranchs (modern sharks and rays)—from Antarctic nearshore waters after the Eocene. Even prior to those extinctions, durophagous predators became less active as coastal sea temperatures declined from 41 Ma to the end of the Eocene, ∼33.5 Ma. In response, dense populations of suspension-feeding ophiuroids and crinoids abruptly appeared. Dense aggregations of brachiopods transcended the cooling event with no apparent change in predation pressure, nor were there changes in the frequency of shell-drilling predation on venerid bivalves.

Conclusions/Significance

Rapid warming in the Southern Ocean is now removing the physiological barriers to shell-breaking predators, and crabs are returning to the Antarctic Peninsula. Over the coming decades to centuries, we predict a rapid reversal of the Eocene trends. Increasing predation will reduce or eliminate extant dense populations of suspension-feeding echinoderms from nearshore habitats along the Peninsula while brachiopods will continue to form large populations, and the intensity of shell-drilling predation on infaunal bivalves will not change appreciably. In time the ecological effects of global warming could spread to other portions of the Antarctic coast. The differential responses of faunal components will reduce the endemic character of Antarctic subtidal communities, homogenizing them with nearshore communities at lower latitudes.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity may allow organisms to cope with variation in the environmental conditions they encounter in their natural habitats. Salt adaptation appears to be an excellent example of such a plastic response. Many plant species accumulate organic solutes in response to saline conditions. Comparative and molecular studies suggest that this is an adaptation to osmotic stress. However, evidence relating the physiological responses to fitness parameters is rare and requires assessing the potential costs and benefits of plasticity. We studied the response of thirty families derived from plants collected in three populations of Plantago coronopus in a greenhouse experiment under saline and non-saline conditions. We indeed found a positive selection gradient for the sorbitol percentage under saline conditions: plant families with a higher proportion of sorbitol produced more spikes. No effects of sorbitol on fitness parameters were found under non-saline conditions.Populations also differed genetically in leaf number, spike number, sorbitol concentration and percentages of different soluble sugars. Salt treatment led to a reduction of vegetative biomass and spike production but increased leaf dry matter percentage and leaf thickness. Both under saline and non-saline conditions there was a negative trade-off between vegetative growth and reproduction. Families with a high plasticity in leaf thickness had a lower total spike length under non-saline conditions. This would imply that natural selection under predominantly non-saline conditions would lead to a decrease in the ability to change leaf morphology in response to exposure to salt. All other tests revealed no indication for any costs of plasticity to saline conditions.  相似文献

Species can adapt to new environmental conditions either through individual phenotypic plasticity, intraspecific genetic differentiation in adaptive traits, or both. Wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, an annual grass with major distribution in Eastern Mediterranean region, is predicted to experience in the near future, as a result of global climate change, conditions more arid than in any part of the current species distribution. To understand the role of the above two means of adaptation, and the effect of population range position, we analyzed reaction norms, extent of plasticity, and phenotypic selection across two experimental environments of high and low water availability in two core and two peripheral populations of this species. We studied 12 quantitative traits, but focused primarily on the onset of reproduction and maternal investment, which are traits that are closely related to fitness and presumably involved in local adaptation in the studied species. We hypothesized that the population showing superior performance under novel environmental conditions will either be genetically differentiated in quantitative traits or exhibit higher phenotypic plasticity than the less successful populations. We found the core population K to be the most plastic in all three trait categories (phenology, reproductive traits, and fitness) and most successful among populations studied, in both experimental environments; at the same time, the core K population was clearly genetically differentiated from the two edge populations. Our results suggest that (1) two means of successful adaptation to new environmental conditions, phenotypic plasticity and adaptive genetic differentiation, are not mutually exclusive ways of achieving high adaptive ability; and (2) colonists from some core populations can be more successful in establishing beyond the current species range than colonists from the range extreme periphery with conditions seemingly closest to those in the new environment.  相似文献

The diets and trophic interactions among Weddell, crabeater, Ross, and leopard seals in the eastern Ross Sea, Antarctica, were investigated by the use of stable isotope techniques during the 1999–2000 summer seasons. The 13C and 15N values in seal serum clearly distinguished the three Antarctic pack-ice seal species at different trophic positions (Weddell>Ross>crabeater). These patterns appeared to reflect a close linkage to their known foraging ecology and diving behaviors, and agreed well with their presumed dietary diversity. The more enriched 13C and 15N values in male Weddell seals than those in females suggested differences in foraging preferences between them. Significant differences in 15N were also found among different age groups of Weddell seals. A strong correlation between the C:N ratios and serum cholesterol was probably due to extremely high cholesterol levels in phocids. Comparisons of isotope data with harbor seals revealed distinct differences between Antarctic phocids and the northern seal species.  相似文献

Secondary metabolites are widespread among lower phyla and understandingtheir functional role(s) in the producing organism has beenunder study in recent decades. Considerable progress has beenmade in understanding chemical ecological interactions amongterrestrial organisms, and similar research in the marine realmhas been initiated in recent years. Polar regions are more difficultto access and thus progress has been slower. Nevertheless, theextreme and often unique marine environments surrounding Antarcticaas well as the many unusual trophic interactions in antarcticmarine communities might well be expected to select for novelsecondary metabolites and/or novel functional roles for secondarymetabolites. Indeed, recent studies have documented novel, chemically-mediatedinteractions between molluscs and amphipods, between algae, urchins and anemones, and between sponges and their predators. The Porifera are the dominant phylum on the McMurdo Sound benthos, and representatives of this phylum have been shown to elaboratesea star feeding deterrents, inhibitors of fouling or infectiousorganisms, and metabolites which mediate predation via moltinhibition. As a result of studies on Antarctic sponges, newinsights into functional roles of pigments and the ability ofsponges to sequester metabolites have been gained, and a newmechanism of chemical defense has been described. Herein wedescribe recent results of our studies of trophic interactionsbetween sponges and their predators that are mediated by specificsponge secondary metabolites. Moreover, we highlight unusualchemically-mediated interactions in antarctic marine invertebratesother than sponges.  相似文献
