Summary The absence of cross-pollination in Cirsium palustre and Cirsium vulgare resulted in reduced achene production while the achenes produced were heavier than those produced after cross-pollimation. Establishment of plants from non-cross-pollinated achenes is comparatively higher, facilitating the founding of a population from isolated individuals in these wind-dispersed species.If achene weight is the result of a balance between cross-pollination and self-pollination (and/or apomixis), the first causing more and thereby lighter achenes to develop, increasing density of flowering individuals in a population may lower achene weight and consequently seedling survival. Summary The progeny of a fusion experiment involving N. sylvestris protoplasts and X-irradiated protoplasts of the cytoplasmic male sterile Line 92 (N. tabacum nucleus and alien, male-sterility inducing, cytoplasm) were analyzed. Three groups of somatic hybrid plants resulted: Type A, Type B-1 and Type B-2. These as well as their androgenic progenies and the progenies resulting from their pollination with N. tabacum or N. sylvestris were followed with respect to several nuclear and cytoplasmic traits. Those controlled by the nuclear genome were plant and flower morphologies; those controlled by genetic information in the cytoplasm were tentoxin sensitivity (affecting the coupling factor of chloroplast ATPase), the large subunit of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and the restriction endonuclease pattern of plastid DNA. A further cytoplasmic trait investigated (exact site of genetic control not known) was male sterility. The examinations of the somatic-hybrid groups and their respective progenies indicated that: Type A plants have N. sylvestris nuclei and Line 92 plastids; Type B-1 plants also have Line 92 plastids but their genome is composed of N. sylvestris and N. tabacum nuclei; Type B-2 plants with impaired male fertility had N. sylvestris plastids and N. sylvestris nuclei.  相似文献

Summary Cirsium vulgare is a plant species of disturbed sites. To understand this distribution the effect of micro-organisms on the germination in this species was investigated as the microflora of disturbed and non-disturbed sites shows differences. It was found that micro-organisms from fruitcoat and environment do influence germination. In an environment containing humus, germination is stimulated.Mortality of seedlings is higher in undisturbed sites, resulting in the observed distribution. It is hypothesized that this mortality is the result of germination, forced by microbial activity (break-down of the fruitcoat, exudation of growth-regulating substances) under conditions in which the survival chances of the seedling are low.Publication of the Meijendel-comité, Nieuwe Serie no. 55  相似文献

Barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare L. Boone) were grown at 20°C with 16 h/8 h light/dark cycle of either high (H) intensity (500 mole m-2 s-1) or low (L) intensity (55 mole m-2 s-1) white light. Plants were transferred from high to low (H L) and low to high (L H) light intensity at various times from 4 to 8 d after leaf emergence from the soil. Primary leaves were harvested at the beginning of the photoperiod. Thylakoid membranes were isolated from 3 cm apical segments and assayed for photosynthetic electron transport, Photosystem II (PS II) atrazine-binding sites (QB), cytochrome f(Cytf) and the P-700 reaction center of Photosystem I (PS I). Whole chain, PS I and PS II electron transport activities were higher in H than in L controls. QB and Cytf were elevated in H plants compared with L plants. The acclimation of H L plants to low light occurred slowly over a period of 7 days and resulted in decreased whole chain and PS II electron transport with variable effects on PS I activity. The decrease in electron transport of H L plants was associated with a decrease in both QB and Cytf. In L H plants, acclimation to high light occurred slowly over a period of 7 days with increased whole chain, PS I and PS II activities. The increase in L H electron transport was associated with increased levels of QB and Cytf. In contrast to the light intensity effects on QB levels, the P-700 content was similar in both control and transferred plants. A cell extract of Thermococcus hydrothermalis, grown for 6 h, gave -glucosidase activity at 14.9 U/l, degrading oligosaccharides and maltose. -Amylase, -glucosidase and pullulanase activities were detected at 289 U/l, 13.5 U/l and 30 U/l respectively in the culture medium after 24 h growth of the archaeum. All of three enzymes, characterised by a half-life time of 1 to 5 h at 95°C, degraded both the (14) and (16) linkages of polysaccharides and the (14) linkages of oligosaccharides. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Durch eine anaerobe Mischflora aus Ackerboden wurde -Hexachlorcyclohexan (-HCH) in 4–5 Tagen zu 90% abgebaut. Dabei erfolgte eine schnelle Abspaltung des Chlors in Form von Chloridionen und danach eine Freisetzung des C- und H-Anteiles in Form flüchtiger Verbindungen, in denen kein Chlor und auch kein CO2 nachzuweisen war.Die Verwendung von 14C/3H- und 36Cl/3H-doppelmarkiertem -HCH zeigte, daß die Cl- und H-Abspaltung nicht im Verhältnis von 1:1 erfolgte, sondern mehr Cl als H abgespalten wurde. Die flüchtigen Verbindungen enthielten andererseits höhere 14C- als 3H-Anteile. Gaschromatographische Untersuchungen zeigten ebenfalls eine rasche Verminderung des -HCH und die Bildung verschiedener Metabolite. Es wurde jedoch kein -Pentachlorcyclohexen nachgewiesen. Bei steigenden O2-Gehalten in der Gasphase verminderte sich der -HCH-Abbau. Jedoch fanden auch noch bei 5% O2 Chlorabspaltung und die Freisetzung flüchtiger Metabolite statt.-HCH wurde ebenfalls, jedoch langsamer, durch die anaerobe Mischflora abgebaut. Auch hier wurde Chlorid abgespalten, und es traten ebenfalls flüchtige Verbindungen auf, die kein Chlor enthielten.
Degradation of 14C-, 3H- and 36Cl-labelled -hexachlorocyclohexane by anaerobic soil microorganisms
Up to 90% of the -Hexachlorocyclohexane (-HCH) applied to an anaerobic mixed bacterial flora enriched from an arable soil were degraded within 4–5 days. Degradation resulted in a rapid release of chloride and in formation of chlorine-free volatile metabolites. CO2 formation from the molecule was not detected.Investigations with 14C/3H- and 36Cl/3H double-labelled -HCH indicated that the release of Cl and H did not occur in the ratio of 1:1. More Cl than H was split off. The volatile compounds contained more 14C than 3H. Gas chromatographic studies also showed the rapid decrease of -HCH and the formation of several metabolites. -Pentachlorocyclohexene was not detected. Increasing O2-contents in the gas phase of cultures resulted in decreases of the compound's degradation. Release of chloride and of volatile metabolites were observed with O2 contents in the gas phase up to 5%.-HCH was also, but more slowly as with -HCH, degraded by the anaerobic mixed flora. Chloride was released and volatile, chlorine-free metabolites were found.

With reciprocal rearing experiments, we tested the hypothesis that adaptive differences in host-use traits among soapberry bug populations have a genetic basis. These experiments were conducted with two host races from Florida, an ancestral-type one on a native host plant species and a derived one on a recently introduced plant species (colonized mainly post-1950), on whose seed crops this insect depends for growth and reproduction. Compared to the native host species, the introduced host produces larger seed crops over a much briefer annual period. Its seeds are also significantly higher in lipids and lower in nitrogen. The bug populations exhibit greater juvenile survivorship on their home hosts; that is, the derived population survives better on seeds of the introduced host than does its ancestral-type counterpart, and vice versa. Regardless of the rearing host, populations from the introduced host lay much smaller eggs, and fecundity measures show a more complex pattern than does survivorship: the ancestral-type population produces eggs at the same rate on each host, while the derived population is less fecund on the native host and exhibits enhanced fecundity on the introduced host. These results indicate that the population differences are evolved rather than host-induced. They appear to be adaptive responses to host differences in the spatial and temporal distribution of seed availability and nutritional quality, and show that increased performance on the alien host has evolved with surprising speed and magnitude, with concomitant reductions in performance on the original host.  相似文献

Summary The ratio of deuterium to hydrogen (expressed as D) in hydrogen released as water during the combustion of dried plant material was examined. The D value (metabolic hydrogen) determined on plant materials grown under controlled conditions is correlated with pathways of photosynthetic carbon metabolism. C3 plants show mean D values of-132 for shoots and -117 for roots; C4 plants show mean D values of -91 for shoots and-77 for roots and CAM plants a D value of-75 for roots and shoots. The difference between the D value of shoot material from C3 and C4 plants was confirmed in species growing under a range of glasshouse conditions. This difference in D value between C3 and C4 species does not appear to be due to differences in the D value (tissue water) in the plants as a result of physical fractionation of hydrogen isotopes during transpiration. In C3 and C4 plants the hydrogen isotope discrimination is in the same direction as the carbon isotope discrimination and factors contributing to the difference in D values are discussed. In CAM plants grown in the laboratory or collected from the field D values range from-75 to +50 and are correlated with 13C values. When deprived of water, the D value (metabolic hydrogen) in both soluble and insoluble material in leaves of Kalanchoe daigremontiana Hamet et Perr., becomes less negative. These changes may reflect the deuterium enrichment of tissue water during transpiration, or in field conditions, may reflect the different D value of available water in areas of increasing aridity. Whatever the origin of the variable D value in CAM plants, this parameter may be a useful index of the water relations of these plants under natural conditions.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine if the addition of conspecific foreign fry affects the survival of host fry in the Midas cichlid, Amphilophus xiloaensis. The study consisted of two separate experiments: (1) adoption treatments simulated by adding 75 foreign fry to a host brood containing 150 fry and parents (10 trials where host fry were larger, 10 trials where foreign fry were larger); (2) control treatments in which no foreign fry were added to a host brood containing 150 fry and parents (20 trials). Predation was imposed by introducing three bigmouth sleepers (Gobiomorus dormitor). No significant differences were found between the survival of host, foreign, and control fry after 24 h. Survival was significantly affected by fry size, leading to differential predation on smaller fry. Mean predation rate increased proportionally with brood size, therefore the addition of conspecific foreign fry did not result in dilution of the host brood.  相似文献

A brief history of the discovery of photosynthetic phosphorylation by chloroplasts and bacterial chromatophores is presented. Arnon early introduced the terminology of Cyclic and Non-cyclic photophosphorylation and Cyclic and Non-Cyclic electron transport to the processes observed in illuminated chloroplasts. He made major contributions to the elucidation of these processes and stressed their great biological significance. Investigations of the electron transport components of chromatophores have led to the isolation, purification and crystallization of bacterial reaction centers. The development of three-dimensional molecular structures, and the characterization of their electron transfer components have provided a great deal of information about the early reactions of bacterial photosynthesis. The electron transfer schemes presented clearly support the cyclic nature of light-induced electron transfer. Summary The numbers and local sequence environments of the two types of substitution mutation plus additions and deletions have been obtained directly in this study from differences between a large number of extant primate gene and pseudogene sequences. A total of 3786 mutations were scored in regions where similarities between pseudogene and corresponding gene sequences is 85%, comprising 30% of the pseudogene database of 80,584 bp. The pattern of mutations obtained in this fashion is almost identical to that obtained by Li et al. (1984) using a slightly different, more direct approach and with a smaller database. When mutations were scored, the neighbor pairs on the 5 and 3 sides were also noted, leading to a large 16 × 12 matrix of transitions and transversions. Biases of varying magnitude are found in the rates of substitution of the same base pair in different local sequence environments. The overall order for the effect of the 5 neighbor on the rates of substitution mutation of a pyrimidine is A > C T > G, and G > A > T > C for the 3 neighbor; where these results represent the average of substitution rates for the complement purine with complement neighbors of bases ordered above. The order for the 3 neighbor is essentially the same for the two transitions and most of the four transversions as well; however, the order for the 5 neighbor is more variable. The overall rate for the C · G T · A transition is not unusual, however the presence of a 3 neighboring G · C pair boosts the rate substantially, presumably due to specific cytosine methylation of the CG doublet in primate DNAs. The rate of the T · A C · G transition is also well above average when the 3 neighbor is an A · T, and to a lesser extent a G · C, pair. The latter bias is typical in that it reflects the association of alternating pyrimidine-purine sequences with increasing mutation rates. The substitution of the pyrimidine in a 5 purine-pyrimi-dine-purine3 sequence generally occurs much faster than in a pyrimidine tract and points to the local conformation as a major determining factor of the substitution rate. An apparent inverse relationship is found between starting and product doublet frequencies of base pairs undergoing mutations with specific 3 neighbors, indicating that differences in intrinsic substitution rates of base pairs with specific neighbors are a key factor in producing the familiar biases of nearest-neighbor frequencies.Offprint requests to: R. Summary An investigation was carried out into the photosynthetic pathways of the complete bromeliad flora of Trinidad (West Indies). Carbon-isotope ratios (13C values) were used to distinguish obligate C3 and crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) species. Measurements were also carried out on some species in the field to test for day-night changes in leaf titratable acidity.A wide range of 13C values was found. The obligate CAM species had values of -10 to -20 and the obligate C3 species of -23 to -35 CAM was found (a) in the majority of Tillandsia spp. (Tillandsioideae) and (b) in all species of Bromelioideae. The other genera of the Tillandsioideae appeared to be at least predominantly C3. One species, Guzmania monostachia var. monostachia, was identified as a C3-CAM intermediate, and others may well exist in the Trinidad flora. The influence of factors such as source CO2, photosynthetic photon flux density and ambient humidity in determining the 13C values is discussed.The taxonomic distribution of C3 and CAM species within the Bromeliaceae is analyzed in terms of the life-forms and ecological types recognized by Pittendrigh (1948). The most xerophytic species (the light-demanding atmospherics) all show CAM and are restricted to the drier parts of the island. Most of the species with waterstoring tanks have a wide geographic distribution: these include light-demanding C3 plants and less light-demanding CAM plants. The shade-tolerant bromeliads, which show a requirement for high ambient humidity, are all C3 plants. We discuss the phylogenetic origins of CAM and the epiphytic habit in the Bromeliaceae.  相似文献

I determined whether selection of breeding sites by thered-neckedgrebe Podiceps grisegena (Boddaert, 1783) was affectedbycompetition for food with fish. During 1987–89, ten ponds inScania, southern Sweden were investigated, five with(breedingsites) and five without breeding red-necked grebe(non-breedingsites). I quantified the biomass of fish and macrozoans(here:larger invertebrates and small vertebrates) and measured thephysical and chemical conditions of the ponds.Breeding sites had significantly lower relative fish abundancethannon-breeding sites. They were either devoid of fish or hadonly nine-spined sticklebackPungitius pungitius. The biomass (dry weight) ofmacrozoans,many of which represent a food resource for grebes, was 16timesgreater at breeding than at non-breeding sites. The physicalandchemical conditions of the ponds did not differsignificantly.These results are consistent with the hypothesis thatcompetitionfor macrozoans occurs between red-necked grebe and fish andthat adense population of many fish species caused red-necked grebestoavoid otherwise acceptable breeding sites.  相似文献

The accumulation of abscisic acid (ABA) by detached and partially dehydrated wheat leaves is known to be inherited in a quantitative manner. The location of genes having a major effect on drought-induced ABA accumulation in wheat was determined using a set of single chromosome substitution lines and populations derived from a cross between a high-ABA- and a low-ABA-producing genotype. Examination of a series of chromosome substitution lines of the high-ABA genotype Ciano 67 into the low-ABA recipient Chinese Spring showed that chromosome 5A carries gene(s) that have a major influence on ABA accumulation in a drought test with detached and partially dehydrated leaves (DLT). A similar DLT was used to examine ABA accumulation in a population of F2 plants and doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from the cross between Chinese Spring (low-ABA) and SQ1 (high-ABA) in which the F2 population (139 plants) and DH lines (96 lines) were also mapped partially with molecular markers. Analysis of variance of ABA accumulation between and within marker allele classes in the F2 confirmed the location of a gene(s) regulating ABA accumulation on the long arm of chromosome 5A. MAPMAKERQTL showed the most likely position for the ABA quantitative trait locus (QTL) to be between the loci Xpsr575 and Xpsr426, about 8 cM from Xpsr426. A similar trend for high ABA accumulation was found in DH lines having the SQ1 allele at marker loci in the same region of chromosome 5AL, but the QTL effect was not significant. It is shown that litter of flowering plants of Cirsium vulgare inhibits the growth of seedlings of the same species at concentrations as low as 0.4% (g litter/g soil). The inhibition of growth cannot be fully compensated by adding nutrients, which indicates that autotoxicity may occur. It must be concluded, however, from an analysis of the results that immobilization of nutrients by microorganisms is the main cause of growth reduction if litter is added to the soil. In a field experiment under nutrient rich conditions plant litter did not affect germination, survival or growth of seedlings. The hypothesis is put forward that under conditions of nutrient deficiency and at high population densities, immobilization of nitrogen by Cirsium vulgare litter may influence plant growth. Results are discussed in relation to those of Stachon and Zimdahl (1980) and Wilson (1981) who claimed allelopathy for the related Cirsium arvense.Publication of the Meijendel-Comité, New Series no. 74  相似文献

Summary Measurements of leaf thickness and 13C value were obtained for twenty species and three intergeneric hybrids of the Crassulaceae. The data include plants growing in their native habitats and also in greenhouse cultivation. There is a strong relationship between leaf thickness and leaf 13C values. The plants with the thickest leaves of ca. 7 to 11 mm had 13C values ranging from -11.5 to -13.8. Plants with leaves that were thinner than 2.0 mm all had 13C values that were more negative than -23. Plants having intermediate leaf thickness possessed intermediate 13C values. The leaf tissue of four genotypes spanning the range of leaf thicknesses all exhibited a two-fold or greater nocturnal increase in titratable acidity. It appears that the differences in leaf thickness and 13C values among the tested species are genetically determined.  相似文献

Summary An experimental manipulation of clutch size was carried out on a wild population of the cooperatively breeding Bell Miner (Manorina melanophrys, Meliphagidae) to assess which factor(s) limit clutch size in this species. Results provide some support for the trade-off hypothesis since there is a cost of reproduction for the breeding female in terms of loss of body mass. The breeding female performs most of the nestling care. Clutches of three eggs are also laid during the mid-breeding season which is the period most favourable for breeding (i.e. nestlings grow faster). This evidence also supports the intrabrood competition hypothesis. Clutches that have lost an egg were more likely to be deserted; this may be an antipredator strategy since partial clutch predation has been recorded in the field. Nest predation was high in this study (64.9%), suggesting that many small clutches may be a strategy to decrease the effect of nest predation on reproductive success over the whole breeding season (nest predation hypothesis). Both the trade-off hypothesis and the nest predation hypothesis may apply in this case since they are not mutually exclusive. The size of the attending group did not greatly affect reproductive success in the short term, although if both age structure and size of the group are taken into account, reproductive success can be better predicted.  相似文献

Variation in stable nitrogen isotope ratios (15N) was assessed for plants comprising two wetland communities, a bog-fen system and a flood plain, in central Japan. 15N of 12 species from the bog-fen system and six species from the flood plain were remarkably variable, ranging from –5.9 to +1.1 and from +3.1 to +8.7, respectively. Phragmites australis exhibited the highest 15N value at both sites. Rooting depth also differed greatly with plant species, ranging from 5cm to over 200cm in the bog-fen system. There was a tendency for plants having deeper root systems to exhibit higher 15N values; plant 15N was positively associated with rooting depth. Moreover, an increasing gradient of peat 15N was found along with depth. This evidence, together with the fact that inorganic nitrogen was depleted under a deep-rooted Phragmites australis stand, strongly suggests that deep-rooted plants actually absorb nitrogen from the deep peat layer. Thus, we successfully demonstrated the diverse traits of nitrogen nutrition among mire plants using stable isotope analysis. The ecological significance of deep rooting in mire plants is that it enables those plants to monopolize nutrients in deep substratum layers. This advantage should compensate for any consequential structural and/or physiological costs. Good evidence of the benefits of deep rooting is provided by the fact that Phragmites australis dominates as a tall mire grass.  相似文献

Predation by Chrysoperla plorabunda (Fitch) (Chrysopidae) first instars on Plutella xylostella (L.) (Plutellidae) neonates was measured on nine Brassica oleracea L. types with different surface wax crystal morphology. Forty-eight-hour survival of P. xylostella caged on leaves was significantly reduced by C. plorabunda on plants expressing glossy mutations that reduce surface waxbloom, but not on plants with normal waxbloom. During 5-min observations, C. plorabunda spent more time walking and less time scrambling (moving the legs with no locomotion) on glossy types than on the normal-wax types. Adhesive force produced by C. plorabunda on plant surfaces was 20 to 200-fold greater on glossy types than on normal-wax types. All the glossy types provided an advantage to C. plorabunda over normal-wax types by increasing the force of attachment to the leaf suface by the larvae, which in turn increased time allocated to walking, leading to greater predation of P. xylostella larvae. Among glossy and normal wax types together, attachment force and time allocated to walking were significantly correlated with predation by C. plorabunda. Within glossy or normal-wax types, however, these correlations were not significant. Neither time allocated to walking, nor attachment to the leaf surface was a predictor of predation by C. plorabunda within glossy or normal-wax types. Although diverse mechanisms therefore contribute to differences in predation, the results show that reduction in waxbloom can substantially affect the mobility and effectiveness of this generalist predator.  相似文献

Quantitative characters of the flowering head of a garden population ofMicroseris laciniata were scored during the second, third, and fourth season of growth. Number of achenes per head, number of phyllaries per head and the average number of pappus parts per achene in single heads show significant plant to plant variation. Achenes per head and pappus parts per achene were scored in identical plants in two subsequent seasons. The number of pappus parts per achene varies freely between five and ten. This contrasts with annual species ofMicroseris in which either five or ten pappus parts are found, depending on the species. In spite of a clear plant-specific average of pappus parts, both high and low pappus part determination can be demonstrated in all specimens. The number of pappus parts depends on the position of an achene on the receptacle, marginal achenes usually having fewer pappus parts than central ones. This gradient is not closely correlated with the position of an achene on the genetic spiral.  相似文献
