Competition between two congeneric gobies, Rhinogobius sp. LD (large-dark type) and CB (cross-band type), for habitat was studied in a tributary of the Shimanto River, southwestern Shikoku, Japan. Habitat use by CB, measured by water depth, current velocity, and substrate, was compared between before and after the removal of LD. After the removal of LD, CB shifted their habitat use to coarser substrates than previously, suggesting a release from effects of LD. This result supports a hypothesis from our previous study that habitat partitioning between CB and LD is a consequence of interference effects of LD on CB.  相似文献

The importance of interspecific competition to habitat use by two congeneric stream gobies, Rhinogobius sp. LD (large-dark type) and CB (cross-band type), was studied by: (i) examining differences in habitat use by each species along the course of the stream; and (ii) comparing microhabitat use and the diet of each species between in allopatry and in sympatry in tributaries of the Shimanto River, south-western Shikoku, Japan. Rhinogobius sp. LD mainly used riffles through the course of the stream. Although CB also mainly used riffles in the lower reaches where CB was numerically dominant, the greater use of riffles by CB was not observed in upper reaches where LD was dominant. Microhabitat analysis revealed that both LD and CB preferred lower bottom velocity in faster current in both allopatry and sympatry. In sympatry, however, LD used coarser substrate and faster current than CB, and both LD and CB used narrower ranges of microhabitat conditions than in allopatry. Dietary analysis indicated that both allopatric and sympatric LD preferred baetids, which are apt to drift, suggesting they adopted ambush foraging. Allopatric CB preferred leptophlebiids and chironomids, which are also apt to drift, whereas sympatric CB did not prefer such invertebrates. Overall results of this study suggest that LD and CB compete for better feeding habitats, CB shift their habitat use and foraging mode under the influence of LD, and current velocity and substrate coarseness are key factors in their habitat segregation.

Habitat use and foraging behavior of two benthic insectivorous gobies, Rhinogobius sp. CO (cobalt type) and Rhinogobius sp. DA (dark type), were examined in relation to their predation effects on local prey density in a small coastal stream in southwestern Shikoku, Japan. Correlations among the foraging range, frequency of foraging attempts and current velocity indicated that individuals using fast-current habitats had small foraging ranges and infrequently made foraging attempts while those in slow currents frequently foraged over large areas. The former and the latter were recognized as ambush and wandering foragers, respectively. Interspecific comparisons of habitat use, foraging behavior and prey preference suggested that Rhinogobius sp. CO selectively forage mobile prey by ambushing in fast currents, whereas Rhinogobius sp. DA randomly forage available prey by wandering in slow-current habitats. A cage experiment was conducted to assess prey immigration rate and the degree of predation effects on local prey density in relation to current velocity. The results of the experiment support, at least in part, our initial predictions: (1) prey immigration rates increase with current velocity and (2) the effects of fish predation on local prey density are reduced as current velocity increases. Overall results illustrated a link between the foraging modes of the stream gobies and their predation effects on local prey density: fish adopt ambush foraging in fast currents, where the decrease in prey density tends to be less, whereas fish actively forage over large areas in slow currents, where the decrease in prey is relatively large.  相似文献

During the past decade, a bottom-dwelling, aggressive, multiple-spawning fish, the round goby (Gobiidae: Neogobius melanostomus), has spread from its native region in the Ponto-Caspian throughout Europe and to the Laurentian Great Lakes in North America. An international workshop, held at the Hel Marine Station, Poland, was organized to summarize population features of the round goby. Common fish predators of round gobies in the Great Lakes and in native regions are obligate and facultative benthic fishes and occasionally, pelagic fishes. In contrast, the main predator of the round goby in the Gulf of Gdansk is the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). In the Great Lakes, round gobies have lead to the decline of mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi) and logperch (Percina caprodes) and reduced the hatching success of native fishes by feeding on their eggs. In the Gulf of Gdansk, round gobies have increased in abundance, while three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) have declined. Round gobies have a broad diet throughout their range; larger specimens are molluscivores. There are fewer species of parasites and lower infection rates of round gobies in recently colonized areas than in native areas. Overall, newly colonized round gobies in brackish waters and lakes are smaller, mature earlier, have a male biased operational sex ratio and are more short-lived compared with round gobies from marine (native) habitats.  相似文献

Upstream-migration of juvenileRhinogobius sp. OR was studied along the Ado River, a tributary of Lake Biwa. Juvenile gobies, mainly 18–21 mm in standard length, migrated from the lake in a belt of about 3 m wide in lower reaches and about 10–20 cm wide in middler reaches. Their upstream-migration was restricted to places shallower than 20 cm with bottom current velocities less than 20 cm/sec. Individual migration speed varied between 4.2–8.9 m/min at places with bottom current velocity of 8.8–20.0 cm/sec, slowing down with increasing current velocity. Most active migration occurred between 14:00 and 16:00, number of upstream-migrating juveniles decreasing with distance from the river mouth. Riffles in the mid-and upper reaches, having few slow current areas, probably present barriers to upstream-migration of the juvenile gobies, although both adults and subadults of the species are distributed in more upper reaches.  相似文献

The lipid, fatty acid and fatty alcohol compositions were determined for muscle samples from six species of deep-sea oreo collected from Australian waters; namely Neocyttus rhomboidalis, Neocyttus sp., Allocyttus verrucosus, Allocyttus niger, Pseudocyttus maculatus, and Oreosoma atlanticum. Neocyttus helgae, landed in North Atlantic waters, was also analysed. Similar analyses were also carried out on the muscle and swim bladder of the orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus from both Australian and North Atlantic waters. Orange roughy is currently a major commercial species in southern Australia and is a new-fishery in the North Atlantic; there are four species of oreo of increasing commercial significance in Australia due to orange roughy quota reductions. It is therefore necessary to determine if the oreo fishing industry is capable of supplementing the current orange roughy requirements with respect to muscle and oil demand. In the oreos, the mean lipid content ranged from 0.5 to 3% of wet weight, with a mixed lipid composition including wax ester, triacylglycerol, sterol and polar lipid. The ratio of the monounsaturated fatty alcohols 22:1 to 20:1 allowed samples from the two geographical regions to be distinguished. Total wax ester in muscle from North Atlantic male orange roughy was much higher than in Australian fish (27 vs. 8.5% wet weight, respectively); females from both locations contained similar amounts of wax ester (4.5 vs. 3.3%, respectively). Selected swim bladders from North Atlantic and Australian orange roughy show similar wax ester content (90 vs. 82%, respectively). The ratio of 22:1 to 20:1 fatty alcohols in orange roughy from the two regions was 0.5 (Australian) and 1.4 (North Atlantic). Indeed differences exist between oreos from the two locations, but not between orange roughy and this requires further investigation. With respect to the nutritional value, the oreos are more attractive than the orange roughy however lipid levels remain much lower compared with other popular species.  相似文献

Coral-dwelling gobies in the genus Gobiodon (family Gobiidae) posses toxic skin secretions. We used bioassays to investigate interspecific variation in the toxicity of skin secretions from six species of Gobiodon from Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef. We then used feeding experiments with two common species of predatory fish to test if skin secretions might act as a chemical defence against predation. The skin secretions of all species were toxic to the bioassay species, Apogon fragilis, but there were marked differences in toxicity among Gobiodon species. Feeding experiments showed that both small- and large-gaped predators avoided food items to which goby skin secretions, or a whole goby, had been added. These experiments indicate that skin toxins could function as a predator deterrent in coral-dwelling gobies.  相似文献

Parasites have deleterious effects on their hosts, often resulting in altered host behavior or increased energy expenditure. When organisms are exposed to suboptimal environments, parasite loading may increase. Microbialite pools along the warm temperate South African coastline have been hypothesized as refugia for Epaulette gobies (Coryogalops sordidus, Gobiidae) when they are outside of their previously known subtropical distribution. The aim of this study was to determine if C. sordidus individuals infected with metacercarial cysts display higher metabolic rates or different swimming behavior compared to noninfected individuals. We measured each goby's swimming performance using a critical station-holding speed (Ucrit) test (n = 60) and visually scored their swimming behavior (n = 52) during these measurements. Also, we measured the metabolic rate of gobies using an intermittent flow respirometer system to determine standard metabolic rate (SMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR) from gobies at 21°C before and after swimming trials. Metacercarial load carried by infected gobies seemingly had no impact on the host's energetics (SMR or MMR), swimming ability (as repeated Ucrit tests), or swimming behavior compared to noninfected gobies. Thus, the metacercarial intensity observed in gobies in the current study appeared to have no impact on host swimming performance or behavior. Furthermore, the swimming capacity observed for C. sordidus, in general, suggests that this goby is a poor swimmer compared to other gobiid species.  相似文献

The red-light(R)-absorbing form of phytochrome (Pr) was detected spectrophotometrically in a 20,000 g particulate fraction prepared from a 1,000 g supernatant fraction from epicotyl tissue of pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings grown in the dark and only briefly exposed to dim green light. The difference spectrum of phytochrome in this fraction was essentially the same as that of soluble phytochrome from the same tissue. When the non-irradiated 20,000 g particulate fraction was incubated in the dark at 25° C, an absorbance change (decrease) of Pr after actinic red irradiation was found only in the far-red (FR) region. When the 20,000 g particulate fraction was irradiated with R and then incubated in the dark, the FR-absorbing form of phytochrome (Pfr) disappeared spectrally at a rate about half that in the soluble fraction, and the difference spectrum of the Pr which became detectable after dark incubation of the 20,000 g particulate fraction was markedly distorted. In contrast, Pfr in a 20,000 g particulate fraction prepared from tissues irradiated with R did not change optically during dark incubation at 25° C for 60 min, while Pfr in the soluble fraction from the same tissue disappeared in the dark. The impact of four environmental parameters (water depth, type of substratum, current velocity and light intensity), on Ranunculus peltatus morphology and reproduction was tested in four 1 month semi- controlled experiments. Four development stages were underlined from April to August 2001 in R. peltatus: an elongation stage (April–June), a flowering stage (May–June), a fragmentation stage (June–July) and a potential regenerative stage (July–August). Water depth was therefore tested on R. peltatus elongation, type of substratum on R. peltatus elongation and flowering, current velocity on R. peltatus fragmentation and light intensity on its possible regeneration. The maximum development was measured for a 32 cm water depth. Current velocity did not have a significant effect on R. peltatus fragmentation. Regeneration depended strongly on light availability. This stage occurred only for unshaded or 50% shaded plants. Darkness prevented plants from regrowing.  相似文献

Lipid accumulation by Gordonia sp. DG using sodium gluconate as carbon source in comparison with Rhodococcus opacus PD630 was studied. Maximum lipid content 80% was observed at the beginning of the stationary phase for R. opacus and 72% at the end of stationary phase for Gordonia sp. Different agro-industrial wastes were used as carbon source. The cells of the two organism accumulated lipid more than 50% of the biomass with most tested agro-industrial wastes. The maximum value was in presence of sugar cane molasses (93 and 96%) for R. opacus and Gordonia sp. respectively. Maximum triacyglycerols (TAGs), 88.9 and 57.8 mg/l, was obtained using carob and orange waste by R. opacus and Gordonia sp. respectively. The use of orange waste as carbon source by R. opacus, increased lipid unsaturation with C18:3 as the major unsaturated fatty acid. On the other hand, C22:0 and C6:0 were the dominant fatty acids (54.5% of the total identified fatty acids) produced by Gordonia sp. in presence of orange waste as carbon source. Statistical optimization of the medium revealed that maximum lipid content was achieved with 60% orange waste, 0.05 g/l ammonium chloride and 0.2 g/l magnesium sulphate.  相似文献

Lemna gibba L. G-3 plants grown heterotrophically in the dark with intermittent red light (2 min every 8 h) contain a substantial amount of translatable mRNA encoding the light-harvesting chlorophyll (Chl)a/b-protein. However, very little [35S]methionine is incorporated into the apoproteins during a 1-h labeling period in the dark in these plants compared to plants grown in continuous white light. The Chla/b-protein mRNA is found to be associated with functioning polysomes in plants grown in the dark with intermittent red illumination (R plants). The small amounts of the apoproteins which are synthesized by these plants are found in the membrane fraction; neither the mature apoproteins nor their precursor(s) can be detected immunologically in the soluble fraction. The protein does not accumulate in these plants. Pulse-chase experiments with the R plants demonstrate that the newly synthesized apoproteins have a half-life of about 10 h in the dark. This turnover is not sufficient to explain the observed 20-fold difference in [35S]methionine incorporation into the apoprotein between white-light-grown and R plants. The wide range of plant responses to ammonium nutrition can be used to study the way ammonium interferes with plant metabolism and to assess some characteristics related with ammonium tolerance by plants. In this work we investigated the hypothesis of plant tolerance to ammonium being related with the plants’ capacity to maintain high levels of inorganic nitrogen assimilation in the roots. Plants of several species (Spinacia oleracea L., Lycopersicon esculentum L., Lactuca sativa L., Pisum sativum L. and Lupinus albus L.) were grown in the presence of distinct concentrations (0.5, 1.5, 3 and 6 mM) of nitrate and ammonium. The relative contributions of the activity of the key enzymes glutamine synthetase (GS; under light and dark conditions) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) were determined. The main plant organs of nitrogen assimilation (root or shoot) to plant tolerance to ammonium were assessed. The results show that only plants that are able to maintain high levels of GS activity in the dark (either in leaves or in roots) and high root GDH activities accumulate equal amounts of biomass independently of the nitrogen source available to the root medium and thus are ammonium tolerant. Plant species with high GS activities in the dark coincide with those displaying a high capacity for nitrogen metabolism in the roots. Therefore, the main location of nitrogen metabolism (shoots or roots) and the levels of GS activity in the dark are an important strategy for plant ammonium tolerance. The relative contribution of each of these parameters to species tolerance to ammonium is assessed. The efficient sequestration of ammonium in roots, presumably in the vacuoles, is considered as an additional mechanism contributing to plant tolerance to ammonium nutrition.  相似文献

Summary The photoreceptors in the compound eye of a cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae, were examined by conventional and intracellular-labeling electron microscopy by the use of the cobalt(III)-lysine complex as an ionized marker. Five types of spectral sensitivity were recorded intracellularly in electrophysiological experiments. They peaked at about 340, 380, 480, 560 and 620 nm, respectively. One of the distal retinula cells (R2) was a UV receptor, whereas the R4 distal retinula cell was a green receptor. The basal retinula cell, R9, was found to be a red receptor; it was localized near the basement membrane, having a bilobed cell body with an individual nucleus in each lobe. A small number of rhabdomere microvilli were present in a narrow cytoplasmic bridge connecting the two lobes. The axons of six retinula cells (R3–R8) in each ommatidium terminated at the cartridge in the lamina (short visual fiber), whereas those of the other three retinula cells, R1, R2 and R9, extended to the medulla (long visual fiber). The information from the UV and red receptors is therefore probably delivered directly to the medulla neurons, independent of that from the other spectral receptor types.  相似文献

Summary Accumulation of cobalt (60Co) by the estuarine microalgaChlorella salina has been characterized. At cobalt concentrations ranging over 3.125–100 M, a significant amount of cobalt was bound within 1 min. This was metabolism-independent and unaffected by incubation in light or dark conditions. This initial rapid phase of biosorption was followed by a slower phase of uptake which was apparently active and inhibited by incubation in the dark, or by the uncoupler dinitrophenol and the respiratory and photosynthetic inhibitor potassium cyanide in the light. For cells suspended in 10 mM Taps pH 8, cobalt biosorption followed a Freundlich adsorption isotherm. However, in the presence of 0.5 M NaCl, biosorption deviated from the Freundlich model because of competition by Na+. Cobalt biosorption was decreased by increasing concentrations of Na+, decreasing pH and the presence of Cs+, Li+, Rb+, Zn2+. Mn2+ and Sr2+ (added as chlorides). This was a result of competition between Co2+ and the other cations, including H+, for available binding sites on the cell wall and was confirmed by increased desorption of cobalt by solutions of low pH or high salinity. Increasing cell density resulted in increased removal of cobalt from solution but decreased the specific amount of cobalt taken up by the cells.  相似文献

Cobalt is an important element with magnetic properties used in various industrial applications, but is also needed for biological activity. Very little is known about the cellular response of living systems to cobalt stress. Towards investigating this mechanism, we isolated individual Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells resistant to high cobalt concentrations up to 8 mmol l−1, by employing four different ‘in vivo’ evolutionary engineering strategies: selection under constant or gradually increasing stress levels, and selection under continuous or pulse exposure to cobalt stress. Selection under continuous exposure to gradually increasing cobalt stress levels yielded the most resistant cell population to cobalt. However, the resistance was highly heterogeneous within the mutant populations ranging from 3- to 3700-fold survival rate of isolated individuals to 8 mmol l−1 CoCl2 in the most resistant population. Moreover, cobalt-resistant individual colonies were associated with 2–4-times lower intracellular cobalt contents as compared to wild-type, and with cross-resistance to metals such as nickel, zinc, manganese, but not to copper and chromium ions. Contrary to mutants evolved under continuous exposure to cobalt, those isolated by pulse exposure strategy also exhibited resistance to heat shock and hydrogen peroxide stress. Taken together, this study reinforced the fact that evolutionary engineering is useful in selecting strains with very specific phenotypes, and further illustrated the importance of the strategy chosen to isolate the best evolved strain.  相似文献

In this study, we present field and laboratory evidence on the preference of Iphiseiodes quadripilis (Banks) for grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfadyen) leaves compared with sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) leaves. This preference was confirmed in four orchards whether leaf samples were taken from either border trees of contiguous grapefruit or sweet orange or interior row trees with both citrus species in adjacent rows. Iphiseiodes quadripilis was most abundant in grapefruit trees in spite of the greater abundance of the Texas citrus mite, Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) in sweet orange trees. Similar preference responses were observed in laboratory tests using a Y-tube olfactometer whether I. quadripilis were collected from sweet orange or grapefruit. Iphiseiodes quadripilis collected from grapefruit trees showed significant preference for grapefruit over sweet orange leaves in contact choice tests using an arena of alternating leaf strips (12 mm long × 2 mm wide) of sweet orange and grapefruit. However, I.␣quadripilis collected from sweet orange trees did not show preference for either grapefruit or sweet orange leaves. Based on these results, grapefruit leaves foster some unknown factor or factors that retain I. quadripilis in greater numbers compared with sweet orange leaves.  相似文献

Physiological color change in camouflage and mating is widespread among fishes, but little is known about the regulation of such temporal changes in nuptial coloration and particularly concerning female coloration. To better understand regulation of nuptial coloration we investigated physiological color change in female two-spotted gobies (Gobiusculus flavescens). Females of this species develop an orange belly that acts as an ornament. The orange color is caused by the color of the gonads combined with the chromathophore based pigmentation and transparency of the skin. Often during courtship and female–female competition, a rapid increase in orange coloration, in combination with lighter sides and back that increases skin and body transparency, gives the belly an intense ‘glowing’ appearance. To understand how this increased orange coloration can be regulated we analysed chromatic and transparency effects of neurohumoral agents on abdominal skin biopsies in vitro. We found prolactin and α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) to increase orange coloration of the skin. By contrast, melatonin and noradrenaline increased skin transparency, but had a negative effect on orange coloration. However, mixtures of melatonin and MSH, or melatonin and prolactin, increased both orange coloration and transparency. This effect mimics the chromatic ‘glow’ effect that commonly takes place during courtship and intra sexual aggression. Notably, not only epidermal chromatophores but also internal chromatophores lining the peritoneum responded to hormone treatments. There were no chromatic effects of the sex steroids 17β-estradiol, testosterone or 11-ketotestosterone. We hypothesize that similar modulation of nuptial coloration by multiple hormones may be widespread in nature.  相似文献
