The nursery role of the Mondego estuary for marine fish species was studied between June 2003 and May 2004. The spatial and temporal distribution and abundance patterns of 0-group Dicentrarchus labrax (Linnaeus, 1758), Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758) were analyzed based on monthly sampling surveys in five stations along the estuarine gradient. Fishing took place during the night at low water of spring tides, using a 2 m beam trawl. The spatial patterns of estuarine colonization were different according to species. D. labrax showed a wider distribution, but the main nursery ground was the same as for S. solea. Highest densities of S. solea juveniles were found in oligohaline areas, with muddy bottoms and high benthic invertebrates availability, while P. flesus occurred mainly in the sandy uppermost areas. D. labrax was found in both these areas. Fish abundance in the estuary mainly reflected seasonal changes.  相似文献

Short-term temporal dynamics in a tidepool fish community were quantitatively examined through a series of direct observation at consecutive low tides in a temperate-subtropical intertidal of southwestern Japan. The visual observation was sufficiently effective compared with the capture by anaesthetics and allowed a continual, undisturbed monitoring. Species composition markedly varied between consecutive day versus night in spring-autumn, but not in winter. In contrast, species composition on consecutive days and on consecutive nights was relatively stable all through the year. The pattern of diel change in abundance varied among species and seasons. C. gulosus, Istiblennius sp. and Girella spp. showed the tendency of night-time occurrence, while B. fuscus individuals tended to occur by day. These trends of day–night differences were mainly observed in spring and summer and rarely in winter. Size differences between day and night were detected in B. fuscus, C. gulosus, Istiblennius sp. and Girella spp. This tidepool fish community demonstrated variation in abundance and body size on short time scales, which may be attributable to behavioural differences among species.  相似文献

Estuaries are particularly susceptible to climate change and drought resulting in atypical changes to freshwater flows. How such changes in flow impact on the ecology of estuarine fishes may depend on how a species moves in response to changing flow conditions. Acoustic telemetry was used to interpret fine-scale movements of two co-inhabiting estuarine fish species, black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri and estuary perch, Macquaria colonorum in relation to freshwater flows, season and moon phase. We found black bream to be highly mobile, regularly travelling the length of the estuary and into the neighbouring estuaries. In contrast, estuary perch had particular home ranges and made occasional, upstream or downstream movements. Possibly influenced by freshwater flows, estuary perch moved at greater rates in the Tambo compared to fish in the Mitchell. Black bream resided in the upper estuary during winter and spring and the lower estuary during summer and autumn, whereas estuary perch remained in the upper estuary throughout the year, with occasional downstream movements in winter and spring. This study revealed 1) significantly large increases in freshwater flows result in mass downstream movements in both species, 2) fish moved upstream during full moons and 3) there are contrasting spatio-temporal patterns in movement between species. The results from this study highlight that estuarine fishes are likely to show differential sensitivity to the impacts of drought and climate change and illustrate how acoustic telemetry methods can be used to determine the environmental needs of fishes and help efforts to conserve and manage estuaries worldwide.  相似文献

Synopsis New information regarding the ecology ofScytalina cerdale was obtained over a four year period as a consequence of a long-term marine ecological study at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP), San Luis Obispo County, California. Twenty intertidal fish surveys were conducted at approximately quarterly intervals, between March 1979 and June 1983, at three separate rocky shore locations (stations). During each survey, a total of 108 square meters (36 m2 per station) was searched for fish during periods of low tide. A total of 280S. cerdale were collected, identified, measured, and released back into the same 4 m2 area, from the same intertidal station (Diablo Cove), throughout the study period. This limited intertidal occurrence most likely reflectsS. cerdale microhabitat requirements; a combination of intertidal elevation (mean = +0.3 MLLW), substratum specificity (loose gravel, 5–10mm size range, overlying a base of sand and shell fragments), and degree of wave exposure (semi-protected). Throughout the study,S. cerdale was seasonally more abundant during summer months (June through August) and less abundant during winter months (November through February). The only exception to this abundance trend followed the 1982 winter storms, which coincided with an El Niño event, whenS. cerdale abundance uncharacteristically dropped during the subsequent 1983 spring and summer surveys. Mean total lengths did not vary greatly, reflecting the absence of early juvenile fishes, and relatively high mean fish densities (3.5 fish per m2 for 20 surveys) were recorded. Qualitative comparisons betweenS. cerdale abundance and seasonal changes in water temperature indicated an inverse relationship. Gravid females, demersal egg masses, and early juvenile individuals were never observed during the four years of the study. This suggests that unlike most other intertidal fishes, particularly other blennioids,S. cerdale may not utilize the intertidal zone for reproductive and recruitment purposes; Diablo Canyon is the most southerly reported distribution for this intertidal species, and therefore, may not entirely represent the species' biology as a whole.  相似文献

On macrotidal coasts, short- to medium term variations in feeding of intertidal fishes are influenced by several interacting time scales. To identify the driver of major variations in the feeding habits of intertidal fish, we used the pemecou sea catfish Sciades herzbergii (Ariidae), an abundant intertidal benthic second order consumer, as a model species. We analyzed the influence of the spring-neap and the day-night cycle on intertidal abundance, stomach fullness, diet composition and food consumption of S. herzbergii using block nets set at slack high tides in two mangrove creeks in north Brazil. At spring tides, intertidal abundance, stomach fullness, and total daily consumption of S. herzbergii were on average 8.8, 1.9, and 3.8 times higher than at neap tides, respectively. At spring tides, Uca spp. and Grapsidae (mostly Pachygrapsus gracilis) dominated the diet, irrespective of the time of day. Other important food items were Insecta and the semiterrestrial crab Ucides cordatus. At neap tides, Capitellidae contributed to the diet of nightly inundations while no specimens were caught at daytime. Creek location had no effect on any variable. Results from our study area and evidence from other studies suggest that the spring-neap tide pulse is likely the major driver of short- to medium term variations in feeding of intertidal fishes. This has important implications for feeding-related issues on macro- and probably also on mesotidal coasts: (i) juvenile fishes may have fortnightly growth spurts, (ii) intertidal prey populations may suffer regular fluctuations in mortality, (iii) studies of the feeding ecology of intertidal fishes should cover the combined effects of the tidal, diel, lunar and seasonal cycles, and (iv) the modeling of food webs should consider the differences between highly dynamic spring tide and quieter neap tide conditions.  相似文献

Intertidal movements of fish larvae and juveniles on a mudflat in the Tama River estuary, central Japan, were investigated by comparing the abundance and sizes of fishes caught in the intertidal zone during flood tides with those in the subtidal zone during low tides. A total of 28465 individuals, belonging to 9 families and 20 species, were collected by small purse seine. Among the abundant species, planktonic larvae and juveniles of gobiids and Konosirus punctatus were more abundant in the intertidal zone at flood tide than the subtidal zone at low tide. Similar occurrence patterns were found in juvenile Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis and Lateolabrax japonicus, having fully developed swimming abilities. In contrast to these species, much higher abundances of epibenthic juveniles of 2 gobiids (Acanthogobius flavimanus and Gymnogobius macrognathos) were found in the subtidal zone at low tide, although they also utilized the intertidal zone at flood tide.  相似文献

The possible links between river flow, zooplankton abundance and the responses of zooplanktivorous fishes to physico‐chemical and food resource changes are assessed. To this end, the seasonal abundance, distribution and diet of the estuarine round‐herring Gilchristella aestuaria and Cape silverside Atherina breviceps were studied in the Kariega Estuary. Spatio‐temporal differences were determined for selected physico‐chemical variables, zooplankton abundance and zooplanktivorous fish abundance and distribution. Results indicated that, following a river flood event in winter (>30 m3 s?1), altered physico‐chemical conditions occurred throughout the estuary and depressed zooplankton stocks. Abundance of G. aestuaria was highest in spring, with this species dominant in the upper and middle zones of the estuary, while A. breviceps was dominant in summer and preferred the middle and lower zones. The catch per unit of effort of both zooplanktivores also declined significantly following the flooding, thus suggesting that these fishes are reliant on zooplankton as a primary food source for healthy populations. Copepods dominated the stomach contents of both fish species, indicating a potential for strong interspecific competition for food, particularly in the middle reaches. Temporal differences were evident in dietary overlap between the two zooplanktivorous fish species and were correlated with river flow, zooplankton availability and fish distribution. The findings of this study emphasize the close trophic linkages between zooplankton and zooplanktivorous fishes under changing estuarine environmental conditions, particularly river flow and provide important baseline information for similar studies elsewhere in South Africa and the rest of the world.  相似文献

Movement patterns and habitat utilization by black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri (Sparidae), an estuarine resident species, were investigated using acoustic telemetry in a small estuary on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia. Thirty‐four adult A. butcheri were tracked for periods of up to 187 days between August 2005 and January 2006. Although able to tolerate a wide range of salinities, the fish spent most of the time within the upper and middle regions of the estuary, where brackish conditions dominated. The species exhibited extensive movements linked to tidal cycles, with small‐scale upstream movements during incoming tides and downstream movements during out going tides. The extent of these movements was positively correlated with the tidal height difference between consecutive tidal peaks and troughs. Freshwater inflows and resultant changes in salinity also significantly influenced distribution and movement patterns. Fish moved downstream during the periods of heavy inflows, returning upstream as salinities increased to c. >10. During the peak of spawning period (November to December) fish moved into the upper region of the estuary, where they aggregated to spawn. Periodic increases in freshwater discharge, however, resulted in fish leaving the spawning grounds and moving downstream. Towards the end of the spawning season (January), the fish became more dispersed throughout the entire estuarine system.  相似文献

The abundance and size structure of wild fishes aggregated around the sea‐cages of two commercial Thunnus thynnus farms, including control locations, were assessed and compared over a 1 year period. The T. thynnus farms were located in the eastern Adriatic Sea, offshore of the islands of Ugljan and Bra?. Fish assemblages were evaluated through visual census using scuba at 2 month intervals at two sites within each farm. The data suggest that wild fish assemblages at the study sites differed greatly; 20 species occurred at the Ugljan farm and 17 at the Bra? farm, while only seven species were observed at the control locations. The abundance and diversity of wild fish assemblages were greater at the farms in comparison to control locations. The most abundant families were Sparidae and Belonidae (>80% of aggregated fishes). At both farms, the abundance and diversity of wild fishes were highest during summer, while diversity was lowest in winter and was mainly characterized by schools of bogue Boops boops and garfish Belone belone. Variability was also detected in spatial assemblages between farms; B. boops and B. belone were the most abundant species for the overall study at the Bra? farm, while B. belone and saddled bream Oblada melanura were the most abundant at the Ugljan farm. The settlement also played a significant role in farm‐associated fish assemblages, as both juveniles and advanced juveniles were common residents at farms. The majority of species which settled at the farms belonged to the sparids. Results indicate that aggregations of wild fishes at T. thynnus farms are persistent year‐round, though the assemblage compositions and size structures of dominant species vary in respect to location and season.  相似文献

Day–night shifts in the nearshore fish fauna of a temperate microtidal estuary were assessed using a holistic suite of structural and functional community attributes. Mean fish species richness and diversity (taxonomic distinctness) were higher at night across all regions of the estuary and seasons, concurring with the findings of numerous comparable studies reviewed worldwide, while the diel period in which mean abundance was higher varied among seasons. Likewise, species and functional guild compositions (the latter based on feeding modes and habitat use) both differed significantly between day and night, with the extent of the diel shift again varying seasonally. Daytime fish communities were characterized by higher abundances of Atherinidae, Sillaginidae and Mugilidae, while Gobiidae were far more abundant at night. Marked shifts in size composition were also evident, with smaller fishes (<100 mm total length, LT) being more prevalent during the day and larger fishes (≥200 mm LT) proportionally more abundant at night. The above diel shifts were feasibly related to a range of predator–prey interactions and feeding‐related movements, namely a nocturnal decrease in top‐order avian piscivory coupled with an increase in invertebrate prey availability, resulting in changes in the presence and catchability of certain fish species in shallow estuarine waters.  相似文献

Summary Substantial numbers of predominantly O+ fish were impinged on the cooling water screens of Harculo, Gelderland, Merwedehaven and Amer power stations. Low numbers were impinged at the two stations located on the river Meuse (Maas and Claus). Two possible reasons for this difference are suggested, viz. a low fish density in the river Meuse and the deep position of the cooling water intakes. In comparison with Bergum power station situated on a lake the impingement rate at the river stations was more than ten times as low. Most fish were impinged during the summer months when large numbers of juvenile fish are present in the rivers. Dominating species impinged were roach, pikeperch, bream and perch. The abundance of pikeperch in the screensamples, points to a recent increase in the population of pikeperch in the rivers. The growth pattern of O+ pikeperch and O+ roach during summer seemed very similar for power stations located at different rivers. Thirty fish species and four crustacean species were collected, among whichOrconectus limosus was quite abundant at Maas and Claus power stations.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal dynamics of fish in tidepools on tidal mudflats in the Tama River estuary, Japan. A total of 1,156 individuals of 8 gobiid species were collected from May 2008 to April 2009. The total abundance of fishes peaked in September and October. Of three dominant species, Acanthogobius flavimanus was found only in spring and early summer, whereas Pseudogobius masago and Mugilogobius abei occurred in all seasons. The utilization patterns of tidepools with/without cobbles were different among the latter two species.  相似文献

We have conducted a preliminary study of tidal and diurnal variations in the distribution of dominant larval and juvenile fishes in the Chikugo River inlet (Ariake Bay, Kyushu, Japan) to determine whether selective tidal stream transport (STST) occurs. Larval and juvenile fish were collected from the mesohaline zone of the Chikugo River inlet during spring 2002. Temperature, salinity, depth, and current velocity were measured. Larval and juvenile abundance were compared among four tidal conditions, flooding tide, high tide, ebbing tide, and low tide, and between day and night. A total of 12 families, 15 species, and 5,577 individuals were collected. Temperature did not vary significantly with tidal conditions whereas salinity, depth, and current velocity varied significantly. Salinity also was correlated significantly and positively with depth. The abundance of most of the fishes was correlated positively and significantly with salinity and depth. Lateolabrax japonicus, Trachidermus fasciatus, Acanthogobius hasta, and other gobiid larvae (Gobiidae spp.) were significantly more abundant during high tide; in contrast, Coilia nasus and Neosalanx reganius were most abundant during low tide. The abundance of most of the fishes was higher during high tides at night than during the day, indicating the existence of STST, which may be strategically associated with ascending progress to upstream nursery areas.  相似文献

Synopsis The coastal fish assemblages of Wemindji, eastern James Bay, were studied in 1987 and 1988 to describe seasonal utilization of the Maquatua River estuary and the adjacent coastal waters by marine and anadromous fishes. Fish diversity was low (11 sp.) and experimental gill net catches were highly variable between sites in the estuary and coastal waters, and also seasonally at a given site. During summer, the estuarine fishes were numerically dominated by two marine species, the fourhorn sculpin,Myoxocephalus quadricornis, and the slender eelblenny,Lumpenus fabricii, and also by juvenile cisco,Coregonus artedii, and juvenile lake whitefish,C. clupeaformis. In coastal waters, three marine species were abundant: the shorthorn sculpin,M. scorpius, the arctic sculpin,M. scorpioides and the Greenland cod.Gadus ogac. In contrast with the estuary, large (> 270 mm) cisco and lake whitefish were abundant in coastal waters indicating extensive movements of these species in James Bay during the summer. Distribution patterns were influenced by a combination of physical conditions (salinity and temperature) and biological characteristics (habitat choice, migration and reproduction) depending on the season.  相似文献

In this study two questions concerning the structure and organisation of shallow brackish and estuarine fish assemblages are: (1) Does the species number decline with lower salinity as found for the macrofauna invertebrates? (2) Does the water temperature during the year influence the abundance of fishes along the Swedish coast? In a west coast estuary salinities were higher but fluctuated more than in the Bothnian Sea. Days with temperatures exceeding 15°C were up to twice as many in the west coast estuary as in the Bothnian Sea. In spring the species number increased, but later on in summer it declined to increase again in autumn, but declined once again as winter approached. Fish density in the west coast estuary increased gradually to a maximum in late summer and then declined, while in the Bothnian Sea there was often a decline during summer. Positive correlations were found between observed minimum salinities and average species number, and between number of days with temperatures exceeding +15°C and both yearly average and maximum fish densities. Juveniles (0+) were present for longer periods in the west coast estuary than in the Bothnian Sea and reproduction of the common species started earlier in the former area. In winter the shallow areas are devoid of fish because of ice and so are re-colonised each spring. The study demonstrates that water salinity limited the species number, and water temperature the abundance of fish.  相似文献

Since the introduction of Undaria into Nuevo Gulf, Argentina, around 1992, this alien seaweed has now colonized different sites over 700 km of coast, forming dense seasonal forests in waters from 0 to 15 meters in depth. In the spring it is common for plants of Undaria to break away from the substrate and be transported by sea currents. As Undaria gets stuck onto reefs it has the potential to reduce habitat quality for reef fish by physically obstructing refuges. This study aims to assess the impact of Undaria on the abundance of four species of rocky-reef fishes by an observational experiment. Fish abundance on reefs with and without Undaria was estimated by underwater visual census methods. Sites were classified according to their topographical relief, as this was expected to influence the effect of Undaria on the abundance of reef fishes. Fish abundance decreased markedly in low-relief reefs that had been covered by Undaria. In contrast, the drifting Undaria had no effect on the abundance of any of the fish species considered in high-relief reefs, where it tends to cover only the lowest-lying areas, leaving much of the refuges for fish unaffected. In conclusion, the presence of Undaria off the coast of Argentina results in transitory habitat loss for reef fishes inhabiting low-relief reefs during late spring and early summer. Although we do not know how much of a threat this habitat loss represents for the conservation of reef fish populations of northern Patagonia, the documented local impact of Undaria within the gulfs is strong and may affect a number of recreational and commercial activities which are centered on the reefs and their fish assemblages.  相似文献

Previous research suggested larval fishes do not exhibit a diel drift cycle in turbid rivers (transparency <30 cm). We evaluated this hypothesis in the turbid, lower Missouri River, Missouri. We also reviewed diel patterns of larval drift over a range of transparencies in rivers worldwide. Larval fishes were collected from the Missouri River primary channel every 4 h per 24‐h period during spring‐summer 2002. Water transparency was measured during this period and summarized for previous years. Diel drift patterns were analyzed at the assemblage level and lower taxonomic levels for abundant groups. Day and night larval fish catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE) was compared for the entire May through August sampling period and spring (May – June) and summer (July – August) seasons separately. There were no significant differences between day and night CPUE at the assemblage level for the entire sampling period or for the spring and summer seasons. However, Hiodon alosoides, Carpiodes/Ictiobus spp. and Macrhybopsis spp. exhibited a diel cycle of abundance within the drift. This pattern was evident although mean Secchi depth (transparency) ranged from 4 to 25 cm during the study and was <30 cm from May through August over the previous nine years. Larval diel drift studies from 48 rivers excluding the Missouri River indicated the primary drift period for larval fishes was at night in 38 rivers and during the day for five, with the remaining rivers showing no pattern. Water transparency was reported for 10 rivers with six being <30 cm or ‘low’. Two of these six turbid rivers exhibited significant diel drift patterns. The effect of water transparency on diel drift of larval fishes appears taxa‐specific and patterns of abundant taxa could mask patterns of rare taxa when analyzed only at the assemblage level.  相似文献
