Forty-eight intact and eight splenectomized cattle were used to evaluate different systems of coinfectious immunization against Babesia bigemina, Babesia argentina, and Anaplasma marginale. Coinfectious immunity was induced by two methods: (1) blood of cattle acutely infected with B. bigemina, B. argentina and A. marginale was used as the source of inoculum and the post vaccination reactions were chemotherapeutically controlled with Imidocarb, Ganaseg, Gloxazone, and Liquamycin, and (2) by artificially inducing babesiosis with the blood of carrier cattle with chronic infections of B. bigemina and B. argentina without chemotherapy. The degree of resistance was determined by bloodborne and tick-borne challenges. Ticks were collected from cattle and identified as Boophilus microplus and Dermacentor nitens. Vaccinated cattle demonstrated a high degree of resistance to babesiosis and anaplasmosis; however, cattle without coinfectious immunity were treated chemotherapeutically to prevent death losses.  相似文献

A new marsupial from the early Eocene Tingamarra Local Fauna of southeastern Queensland, Australia, is named and referred to ChulpasiaCrochet and Sigé, 1993, a genus otherwise known from early Tertiary deposits of Peru. This taxon, Chulpasia jimthorselli nov. sp., differs in upper molar morphology only in minor details from the Peruvian type species Chulpasia mattaueri and is almost identical in size. New materials referable to the Tingamarra marsupial Thylacotinga bartholomaii Archer, Godthelp and Hand are also described. Species of Chulpasia and Thylacotinga share many striking derived as well as plesiomorphic dental features that allow recognition of a new monophyletic subfamily, Chulpasiinae. Its familial relationships are in doubt, but members of the subfamily could have provided the ancestral stock for Rosendolops and other early Tertiary South American polydolopimorphian marsupials. This is the first evidence that a Gondwanan genus of therian land mammals spanned South America, Antarctica and Australia during the early Tertiary. The very close similarity between the Peruvian and Australian fossils (and suggested short time span between their stratigraphic occurrences) provides further paleontological support for a trans-Antarctic land connection between South America and Australia extending well into the early Paleogene.  相似文献

An indirect fluorescent antibody test was used to analyze the antigenic relationships between Babesia argentina, a parasite of cattle, and two human malaria parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Elevated antibody titers to P. falciparum were found in cattle infected with B. argentina. Some persons infected with P. falciparum or P. vivax were found to produce antibodies to B. argentina. Explanations for the occurrence of these cross reactions are considered.  相似文献

Samples of 31 populations of Parthenium hyserophorus from varius areas of its world distribution were examined for their sesquiterpene lactone composition. On the basis of the occurrence of sesquiterpene lactones the samples were divided into seven chemical types. The most common is a type represented by plants containing parthenin as a major sesquiterpene lactone, and coronopilin and tetraneurin-A. All samples from North and Central America, Venezuela, South Africa, India, Australia, and one sample from Jamaica belong to this type. This suggests that P. hysterophorus recently introduced to South Africa, India and Australia originates in North and (or) Central America. On the other hand, there is a great diversity among examined South American populations. Plants from these populations usually contain hymenin which is their major sesquiterpene lactone. Some populations may also contain coronopilin, hysterin, and dihydroisoparthenin. A high diversity in the sesquiterpene lactone chemistry and the morphological differences between individual South American populations of this species indicate the possible existence of several taxa.  相似文献

For parasites that require multiple hosts to complete their development, the interaction with the intermediate host may have an impact on parasite transmission and development in the definitive host. The human parasite Schistosoma mansoni needs two different hosts to complete its life cycle: the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (in South America) as intermediate host and a human or rodents as final host. To investigate the influence of the host environment on life history traits in the absence of selection, we performed experimental infections of two B. glabrata strains of different geographic origin with the same clonal population of S. mansoni. One B. glabrata strain is the sympatric host and the other one the allopatric host. We measured prevalence in the snail, the cercarial infectivity, sex-ratio, immunopathology in the final host and microsatellite frequencies of individual larvae in three successive generations.  相似文献

A crude soluble antigen obtained from a mixture of Babesia argentina parasites and infected erythrocyte stromata has been partly purified and characterized by immunological procedures and its intraerythrocytic site demonstrated by fluorescent antibody techniques. This product contained at least two distinct antigens which were species specific. One had an electrophoretic mobility. similar to serum prealbumin, had little HA activity, and was found in or on the internal rim of the erythrocytic membrane. The other had an electrophoretic mobility similar to serum β1 globulins, was highly active in HA tests, and was found in granules on the internal stromata of the infected erythrocytes. The evidence suggests that both antigens are produced either from the parasite and are associated closely with erythrocytic components or are produced by digestion of erythrocytic components and represent metabolites of the parasite. In either case the antigenic compounds detected are specific to B. argentina.  相似文献

Artemisone was evaluated, in in vitro and in vivo, for control of bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia bigemina and Babesiabovis parasites. In vitro, artemisone reduced parasitemia in a dose-dependent manner: the inhibitory effects increased gradually, reaching a maximum inhibition of 99.6% and 86.4% for B. bigemina and B. bovis, respectively 72 h after initiation of treatment with initial parasitemia of 0.5%. In calves infected with either B. bigemina or B. bovis artemisone treatment was well tolerated and prevented development of acute babesiosis in all animals except for one B. bovis-infected calf. The treatment did not eliminate all blood parasites, and recovered animals carried a persistent low-level infection. Treatment with artemisone may be useful as an alternative drug for preventing the pathology that results from babesiosis, without interfering with acquired immune protection following recovery from an acute babesiosis infection or vaccination.  相似文献

The pathology of severe Babesia argentina infections in splenectomized calves was studied. The calves were infected by intravenous inoculation of 109–1010B. argentina and given 0.1 mg/kg betamethasone to enhance the parasitemia. Hematological changes observed during detailed studies of the course of infection in eight calves, three of which subsequently died, included thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, and reduced fibrinogen levels. The prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time were prolonged in all three calves tested, and pathological levels of fibrinogen degradation products were detected in both of two calves tested. Massive pulmonary edema was a constant finding at autopsy of 24 fatal cases. Histopathological examination revealed widespread fibrin thrombi in capillaries and larger vessels of lung, in capillaries of renal glomeruli, and in hepatic sinusoids. The findings established the occurrence of disseminated intravascular coagulation in the acute infections studied.  相似文献

Biogeographic patterns of parasite diversity are useful for determining how host–parasite interactions can influence speciation. However, variation in methodologies and sampling effort can skew diversity estimates. Avian haemosporidians are vector-transmitted blood parasites represented by over 1300 unique genetic lineages spread across over 40 countries. We used a global database of lineage distributions for two avian haemosporidian genera, Plasmodium and Haemoproteus, to test for congruence of diversity among haemosporidians and their avian hosts across 13 geographic regions. We demonstrated that avian haemosporidians exhibit similar diversity patterns to their avian hosts; however, specific patterns differ between genera. Haemoproteus spp. diversity estimates were significantly higher than those of Plasmodium spp. in all areas where the genera co-occurred, apart from the Plasmodium spp.-rich region of South America. The geographic distributions of parasite genera also differed, with Haemoproteus spp. absent from the majority of oceanic regions while Plasmodium spp. were cosmopolitan. These findings suggest fundamental differences in the way avian haemosporidians diverge and colonise new communities. Nevertheless, a review of the literature suggests that accurate estimates of avian haemosporidian diversity patterns are limited by (i) a concentration of sampling towards passerines from Europe and North America, (ii) a frequent failure to include microscopic techniques together with molecular screening and (iii) a paucity of studies investigating distributions across vector hosts.  相似文献

The genus Ilex to which mate (Ilex paraguariensis) belongs, consists of more than 500 species. A wide range of metabolites including saponins and phenylpropanoids has been reported from Ilex species. However, despite the previous works on the Ilex metabolites, the metabolic similarities between species which can be used for chemotaxonomy of the species are not clear yet. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy-based metabolomics was applied to the classification of 11 South American Ilex species, namely, Ilex argentina, Ilex brasiliensis, Ilex brevicuspis, Ilex dumosa var. dumosa, I. dumosa var. guaranina, Ilex integerrima, Ilex microdonta, I. paraguariensis var. paraguariensis, Ilex pseudobuxus, Ilex taubertiana, and Ilex theezans. 1H NMR combined with principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) showed a clear separation between species and resulted in four groups based on metabolomic similarities. The signal congestion of 1H NMR spectra was overcome by the implementation of two-dimensional (2D)-J-resolved and heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC). From the results obtained by 1D- and 2D-NMR-based metabolomics it was concluded that species included in group A (I. paraguariensis) were metabolically characterized by a higher amount of xanthines, and phenolics including phenylpropanoids and flavonoids; group B (I. dumosa var. dumosa and I. dumosa var. guaranina) with oleanane type saponins; group C (I. brasiliensis, I. integerrima, I. pseudobuxus and I. theezans) with arbutin and dicaffeoylquinic acids, and group D (I. argentina, I. brevicuspis, I. microdonta and I. taubertiana) with the highest level of ursane-type saponins. Clear metabolomic discrimination of Ilex species and varieties in this study makes the chemotaxonomic classification of Ilex species possible.  相似文献

Similarities and differences between the fauna of inland saline waters in Australia and on the Altiplano are explored and explanations sought.Elements common to both continents include the calanoid copepod genus Boeckella (B. triarticulata in Australia, B. poopoensis and B. meteoris in South America) and the cladoceran genus Daphniopsis. Salinity data for Altiplano lakes are given for six species of Boeckella and for Daphniopsis.Ostracods have adapted to the open water of saline lakes in Australia but not in South America, a difference that may reflect past differences in the degree of predation by birds. In South America, diatoms are grazed by the flamingos Phoenicoparrus andinus and P. jamesi, while in Australia the main diatom grazer is probably the aquatic oniscoid isopod Haloniscus searlei. However, at least four species of flamingos were present in Australia during the late Cenozoic and one or more of these may well have grazed diatoms. The extinction of diatom-grazing or carnivorous flamingos, or both, in Australia may have been factors in the unique colonization of inland saline waters by H. searlei.  相似文献

Two fossil taxa Tubulifloridites antipodica and T. viteauensis recovered from the Eocene Knysna Lignite of South Africa were examined with scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The details of their sculpturing and wall structure are similar to the same species of fossil dispersed pollen taxa recovered from southwestern Africa and South America. Fifteen species of the woody South African taxa, Brachylaena (9 species) and Tarchonanthus (6 species) were investigated with SEM and TEM. All of the taxa are tricolporate, spherical to slightly prolate, microechinate to echinate and have a bilayered columellate infrastructure, except B.ilicifolia, which has a single columellate infrastructural level with the “granularization” of the outer portion of the infrastructural layer or the inner layer of the tectum. There is a similar distribution of plesiomorphic and derived pollen characters in a number of aster subfamilies and tribes suggesting a similar evolutionary progression of pollen, and pollen wall character evolution was occurring synchronously in a variety of aster subfamilies during the middle Tertiary and that these unique pollen features may be important to the evolution and diversification of the Asteraceae.  相似文献

Temperate species of Hypomyces and Cladobotryum that produce the red pigment aurofusarin are common on agaricoid and polyporoid basidiomata of species from five orders of Agaricomycetes. Several cause cobweb disease of commercially cultivated mushrooms resulting in serious losses. We sequenced rpb1, rpb2, tef1, and FG1093 regions in 90 wild strains and 30 strains from mushroom farms, isolated from Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Multigene analyses support the distinctness of five species but reveal Hypomyces rosellus to be paraphyletic, comprising several cryptic lineages. Hypomyces rosellus s. str. is characterised by wide dispersal and gene flow across Eurasia but does not occur in North America. Instead, the lineages from the West and the East Coast appear distinct, having given rise to species inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere. Our results reveal wide misuse of the name H. rosellus, especially for cobweb isolates. The majority of these belong to Hypomyces odoratus, including a weakly supported group of fungicide-resistant strains from Europe and North America sharing identical sequence data. New collections are presented for Cladobotryum rubrobrunnescens and Cladobotryum tenue as well as Cladobotryum multiseptatum and Hypomyces dactylarioides, all previously known only from their type material. The former species pair occurs in Europe and the latter in Australia and New Zealand. Separate lineages appear to be maintained by geographic isolation in North America and temperate Australasia but by host specialisation in the species occurring sympatrically in Europe and Asia. Both specialist and generalist host use strategies have evolved in the group. Although teleomorphs are known in most of the species and unnamed lineages, analyses of the five-gene regions suggest the prevalence of clonal reproduction in H. odoratus. This can be the reason for its success in mushroom farms, also facilitating the spread of fungicide resistance. While tef1 and rpb2 can be recommended for species delimitation, low variation, not exceeding 1 % in the whole ingroup, impeaches the use of ITS as a barcoding gene region in this group of fungi.  相似文献

An attenuated live vaccine containing Babesia bovis and B. bigemina cultured in vitro with a serum-free medium was assessed for its clinical protection conferred of naïve cattle, under natural tick-challenge in a high endemicity zone to Babesia spp. Three groups of six animals were treated as follows: group I (GI) received a vaccine derived from parasites cultured with a free-serum medium; group II (GII) were immunized with the standard vaccine, with parasites cultured in a medium supplemented with 40% (v/v) bovine serum; and a control group (GIII) inoculated with non-infected bovine erythrocytes. Inocula were administered by IM route. Experimental animals were kept during 23 days after vaccination in a cattle farm free of ticks and Babesia spp. Thereafter, cattle were moved to a high endemicity farm for natural exposure to Babesia spp. transmitted by Rhipicephalus microplus ticks. Protection against clinical babesiosis was observed in bovines belonging to GI (100%) and GII (83.33%), while the control animals (GIII) were not protected, and showed severe clinical signs, closely related to babesiosis, were observed for at least three consecutive days during the challenge. These were fever, anemia, which were measured simultaneously, and circulating parasites were detected by optic light microscopy. All cattle showed B. bovis and B. bigemina in stained blood films during the challenge; B. bovis antibody titers were higher than those to B. bigemina in GI and GII, and lower titers were determined in GIII. The protective capacity of the vaccine derived from B. bovis and B. bigemina cultured in vitro in a serum-free medium was demonstrated.  相似文献

A multiplex PCR method has been developed to detect, differentiate, and confirm the morphological identification of three root infecting Olpidium spp.: O. bornovanus, O. brassicae, and O. virulentus. Of the 132 root samples examined, 101 samples were infected by Olpidium spp.. Based on the morphology of resting spores, the presence of O. bornovanus was confirmed in 20.5 % of the samples, whereas species identity could not be determined for the remaining samples because they failed to reproduce sexually. With multiplex PCR, it was possible to determine the Olpidium identity of all the infected samples, even when resting spores were not formed. This method was also effective for detecting Olpidium spp. in water samples. In addition, the specificity and sensitivity of multiplex PCR were evaluated. The multiplex PCR method was validated with samples of 9 different crops from 11 countries of America, Europe, and Africa.  相似文献

Species of Coleosporium (Pucciniales) are rust fungi that typically alternate between pines and angiosperms. In North America, species of Coleosporium often infect Solidago (goldenrods), although their taxonomy on these hosts is unresolved. Joseph. C. Arthur and George B. Cummins regarded these as a single species, Coleosporium solidaginis (fide Arthur) or C. asterum (fide Cummins), but later inoculation studies demonstrated the presence of more than one species, distinguishable by their aecial hosts. A more recent taxonomic study of Coleosporium found that specimens on Solidago identified as C. asterum in North America were not conspecific with the type, which is from Japan, prompting the present study. Herein, we conducted a systematic study on ca. 60 collections of Coleosporium infecting species of Asteraceae from North America using regions of ribosomal DNA and morphology of teliospores and basidia. Our data indicate at least three species of Coleosporium occur on Solidago in North America, C. solidaginis, C. montanum comb. nov., which is proposed for the taxon that has commonly been identified as C. asterum in North America, and C. delicatulum, all of which can be differentiated by morphology of their basidia. In addition, the challenges of marker selection for molecular barcoding of rust fungi is discussed.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most successful protozoan parasites given its ability to manipulate the immune system and establish a chronic infection. It is a parasite with a significant impact on human health, mainly in immunocompromised patients. In Europe and North America, only a few clonal genotypes (I, II and III) seem to be responsible for the vast majority of Toxoplasma infections. Surface antigen 2 gene (SAG2) has been extensively used for genotyping T. gondii isolates. The analysis of this locus reveals that in Northern hemisphere, human disease causing isolates are mainly type II, whereas T. gondii isolated from different animals are both type II and III. Since the immune response depends on parasite genotype, it seems relevant to characterize parasites producing human toxoplasmosis in different geographical areas. The growing information about the prevalent T. gondii genotypes in South America mostly refers to domestic animals. This is the first report of genetic characterization of T. gondii isolates from clinical samples in Chile, South America. All the samples analyzed corresponded to SAG2 type I isolates, and they differ from classic SAG2 type I by genetic polymorphisms. This study contributes to the scarce available information on T. gondii at South America, and reinforces an emerging concept suggesting that SAG2 type I, rather than II, parasites are a frequent cause of clinical toxoplasmosis in this continent.  相似文献
