A preliminary attempt was made to quantify the alpha diversity of fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) along a short transect across the interface between an intertidal mudflat and a largely Avicennia mangrove at Ambeua on the Indonesian island of Kaledupa in Sulawesi Tenggara, by means of visual counts within 2 m2 quadrats. An astounding diversity of up to six seemingly coexisting species per quadrat—and a total of seven such species within an area of 4 m2—was revealed. Four species of the ecologically equivalent sentinel crabs (Macrophthalmus) were also present in the quadrats. Seven fiddler crab species equates to more than half those known from Wallacea, more than one-third of all those known from Indonesia, and almost one-fifth of the entire Uca fauna of the Indo-West-Pacific.  相似文献

1. The dynamics of a submerged plant community were studied for 6 years in a freshwater tidal wetland. The degree and nature of change at several spatial scales (quadrat, transect and overall community) was determined, and the implications for community stability were assessed. 2. A high degree of change was recorded in 1 m2 quadrats, and this was reflected in 10 m2 transects as well. In quadrats, mean species richness changed every year. Species richness changed in >60% of quadrats each year. Stem number changed by as many as several 100 stems per quadrat from one year to the next. 3. Richness varied more among quadrats than among transects and varied less at the community level than among either quadrats or transects. Greater stability at the spatial scale of the whole community was reflected in high scores on the Jaccard and Morasita–Horn indices and Kendall's coefficient of concordance. 4. Although most of the submerged species were perennials, persistence at the local scale was low, and 4‐year persistence exceeded 50% for only one species. Change in abundance was largely independent among the species. 5. In the face of great small‐scale changes, species remain in the community (and the community persists) because of high recruitment rates.  相似文献

The Hantam-Tanqua-Roggeveld subregion is part of the Succulent Karoo hotspot of biodiversity which stretches along the southwestern side of South Africa and Namibia. Forty Whittaker plots were surveyed in the spring of 2005, in eight vegetation associations, to gather diversity data for the Hantam, Tanqua Karoo and Roggeveld areas. Seven plot sizes were used to construct species–area curves using three different models namely: the untransformed linear function, the power function and the exponential function. In general, the power and exponential functions produced a more significant fit to the data than the untransformed linear function. Linear regressions using environmental parameters indicated that altitude, mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature were significant predictors of species richness at the 1, 10, 100 and 1000 m2 scales. To illustrate the variation in species–area curves and species richness across the landscape, a transect through the study area is discussed. The transect stretches eastwards from the Tanqua Karoo across the escarpment into the Roggeveld and crosses five different vegetation associations. Differences between associations were found in species richness in the 1000 m2 plots. Each association also produced species–area curves with their own characteristics. Slope values for the samples within an association did not differ significantly, although the intercept value often did. Comparisons between associations along the transect revealed significant differences in the slope value between the associations, except for the Dicerothamnus rhinocerotis Mountain Renosterveld which did not differ significantly from the associations bordering it on either side.  相似文献

Plant censuses are known to be significantly affected by observers’ biases. In this study, we checked whether the magnitude of observer effects (defined as the % of total variance) varied with quadrat size: we expected the census repeatability (% of the total variance that is not due to measurement errors) to be higher for small quadrats than for larger ones. Variations according to quadrat size of the repeatability of species richness, Simpson equitability and reciprocal diversity indices, Ellenberg indicator values, plant cover and plant frequency were assessed using 359 censuses of vascular plants. These were carried out independently by four professional botanists during spring 2002 on the same 18 forest plots, each comprising one 400-m2 quadrat, four 4-m2 and four 2-m2 quadrats. Time expenditure was controlled for. General Linear Models using random effects only were applied to the ecological indices to estimate variance components and magnitude of the following effects (if possible): plot, quadrat, observer, plant species and two-way interactions. High repeatability was obtained for species richness and Ellenberg indicator values. Species richness and Ellenberg indicator values were generally more accurate but also more biased in large quadrats. Simpson reciprocal diversity and equitability indices were poorly repeatable (especially equitability) probably because plant cover estimates varied widely among observers, irrespective of quadrat size. Grouping small quadrats usually increased the repeatability of the variable considered (e.g. species richness, Simpson diversity, plant cover) but the number of plant species found on those pooled 16 m2 was much lower than if large plots were sampled. We therefore recommend to use large, single quadrats for forest vegetation monitoring.  相似文献

Collecting phenological data, seasonal availability of plant resources that primates feed on, allows us to understand feeding ecology better. A number of primates are terrestrial or semiterrestrial frugivores, yet phenology is generally measured only in the canopy. I hypothesized that combining measurements of food availability on the ground with canopy measurements would more strongly correlate with diet than canopy measurements alone for a semiterrestrial frugivore, the Tana River mangabey (Cercocebus galeritus). From July 2005 until June 2006, I conducted monthly follows on a mangabey group. Phenology was measured in 105 individuals of their top seven food tree species. I measured canopy phenology on a 0–5 scale and counted fruits in three 1 m3 areas of the canopy, and measured ground phenology by counting fruits and seeds in four 1 m2 quadrats under the canopy. I calculated each tree’s canopy volume and canopy shadow, and each species’ mean fruit weight, mean seed weight, and density. Monthly biomasses were calculated as kilograms per hectare. Spearman correlations were performed between diet contribution and canopy biomass, ground biomass, and total biomass. The hypothesis was not supported for seven species individually or combined. The hypothesis was supported for 3 of 12 diet items, although canopy biomass was also significant for 2 of those items. Two diet items correlated only with ground biomass. Studies of the Tana River mangabey may benefit from measuring ground phenology only for those items eaten exclusively on the ground. Primatologists studying terrestrial or semiterrestrial frugivores should consider feeding height when deciding on phenology methods.  相似文献

In the study a comparison is made between the results of two sampling procedures, both based on the application of the same hand-held suction apparatus. Sampling was aimed at spiders, and was carried out on two alfalfa fields. In the first method suction sampling was applied to an enclosure of 0.48 m2. The enclosed area was sampled intensively, which was facilitated by the removal of the vegetation. The second method was a transect sampling procedure during which the suction apparatus with a 0.01 m2 nozzle was applied to single unenclosed sampling points 1 m apart. A linear series of 48 such subsamples comprised a transect, thus the total area covered in a transect equalled the area of the enclosure. In the transect samples three times more spiders were caught than in the enclosures. This result was consistent on different occasions and at both fields. This basic trend was found in all spider families that were present in significant numbers in the samples. Species composition in the samples collected by the two methods was similar, and species abundance ranks were highly correlated across dates. We propose that an “edge effect” can explain higher catches in transect samples. This edge effect is caused by lateral suction at the edges, which inflated the number of animals caught in the transect application.  相似文献

Macrofauna has been sampled at 30 stations, at water depths of 1018–4478 m, along a transect extending between Northern Svalbard and the Makarov Basin, as a basis for understanding aspects of the benthic ecology of the Arctic Ocean. Species numbers, abundances and biomasses were extremely low, and generally varied between 0 to 11/0.02 m2, 0 to 850 individuals/m2, and 0 to 82.65 g/m2, respectively. A total of 42 species was found. The Amphipod Jassa marmorata was the most common species. Both numbers and biomasses of suspension-feeding species increased towards the Lomonosov Ridge, probably due to lateral transport of organic material by deep currents along the ridge.  相似文献

A quantitative study, based on monthly samples taken by divers with 0.1m2 quadrats, was conducted on a benthic community settling coarse sediments in an area exposed to strong water currents.The richness of the community was high both in terms of biomass (270±107 g m–2 in ash-free dry weight) and diversity (ten zoologicals groups for a total of 98 species). Three suspension feeding species were dominant: Ophiothrix fragilis, Urticina felina and Alcyonium digitatum accounted for more than 95% of the total biomass at all sampling periods.Spatial heterogeneity analysis confirmed the role of these three dominant species. Heterogeneity revealed at a scale of 0.1 m2 by dendrograms (qualitative similarity index) or by Factor Correspondence Analysis (FCA) (on biomasses) was due to the strong dispersion of rare species.The influence of the observation scale was visualised by building Rank-Frequency Diagrams using progressively aggregated replicates. The distribution of relative biomasses and the rank of the dominant species always stabilized at scale of 0.4 or 0.5 m2.The three dominant species were overdispersed at a scale of 0.1 m2 compared with a Poisson distribution. Spatial competition among the three species was suggested by their dispersion in the plane of the FCA. Calculation of a multiple linear regression (at the scale of 0.8 m2) showed negative relationships among these dominant species.Temporal homogeneity was indicated (at a scale of 0.8 m2) by dendrograms of species similarities among samples and by FCA performed on total biomasses.  相似文献

A reliable characterization of community diversity and composition, necessary to allow inter‐site comparisons and to monitor changes, is especially difficult to reach in speciose invertebrate communities. Spatial components of the sampling design (sampling interval, extent and grain) as well as temporal variations of species density affect the measures of diversity (species richness S, Buzas and Gibson's evenness E and Shannon's heterogeneity H). Our aim was to document the small‐scale spatial distribution of leaf litter ants in a subtropical dry forest of the Argentinian Chaco and analyze how the community characterization was best achieved with a minimal sampling effort. The work was based on the recent standardized protocol for collecting ants of the leaf litter (“A.L.L.”: 20 samples at intervals of 10 m). To evaluate the consistency of the sampling method in time and space, the selected site was first subject to a preliminary transect, then submitted after a 9‐month interval to an 8‐fold oversampling campaign (160 samples at interval of 1.25 m). Leaf litter ants were extracted from elementary 1 m2 quadrats with Winkler apparatus. An increase in the number of samples collected increased S and decreased E but did not affect much H. The sampling interval and extent did not affect S and H beyond a distance of 10 m between samples. An increase of the sampling grain had a similar effect on S than a corresponding increase of the number of samples collected, but caused a proportionaly greater increase of H. The density of species m?2 varied twofold after a 9‐month interval; the effect on S could only be partially corrected by rarefaction. The measure of species numerical dominance was little affected by the season. A single standardized A.L.L. transect with Winkler samples collected <45% of the species present in the assemblage. All frequent species were included but their relative frequency was not always representative. A log series distribution of species occurrences was oberved. Fisher's α and Shannon's H were the most appropriate diversity indexes. The former was useful to rarefy or abundify S and the latter was robust against sample size effects. Both parametric and Soberón and Llorente extrapolation methods outperformed non‐parametric methods and yielded a fair estimate of total species richness along the transect, a minimum value of S for the habitat sampled.  相似文献

Abstract. This study reports on small-scale changes in the distribution of plant species in a 2.5 m2 plot of grazed, species-rich Veronica spicata - Avenula pratensis grassland on shallow, dry, nutrient-poor soil in the Great Alvar area (Stora Alvaret) of southern Öland, southeastern Sweden. Multivari-ate analysis of 0.001 m2 and 0.25 m2 quadrats within the plot showed that there is little floristic variation without any trend in the plot. Average species richness varied little throughout the study period from 1986 to 1991 with 1986 averages of 7.0 on 0.001m2, 16.3 on 0.01 m2, and 26.1 on 0.25 m2. On 0.001 m2the highest species number found was 12, on 0.01 m2, 27. However, cumulative species richness, i.e. species number in the first year plus new species appearing in later years (averaged over 40 quadrats) increased over the same period, on 0.001 m2 from 7.0 in 1986 to 14.9 in 1991, and on 0.01 m2 from 16.3 to 24.1. Cumulative frequency, i.e. number of quadrats out of 40 where a species occurred in the first year or/and in later years, increased as well; the number of cumulatively highly frequent (> 80%) species increased from 5 in 1986 to 18 in 1991. Species mobility on the scale of the small quadrats used implies both appearance and disappearance from these quadrats. Using six examples, species mobility is shown to vary individualistically, both in rate and degree. We postulate that in homogeneous, grazed, nutrient- and water-deficient environments many species can reach virtually all microsites within the plot, which we express through the idea of the ‘carousel model’. We also question the usefulness of the niche concept and re-interpret it by stating that all species of this plant community have the same habitat niche, while most of them are short-lived and have the same regeneration niche. The essential variation amongst the species is their individual ability to establish or re-establish by making use of favourable conditions appearing in microsites in an unknown, complex spatio-temporal pattern.  相似文献

Species turnover and mobility on a scale of 25 m2 was studied in a montane meadow, which had been transplanted to a location 200 m away from the initial site in the Harz Mountains. The transplantation was performed to preserve this grassland area, which otherwise would have been destroyed by a road construction project. The frequency of 18 endangered species was recorded annually from 1992 to 1996 in 122 quadrats, having a size of 5 × 5 m and being arranged in a coherent block with a total area of 3,000 m2. Many species showed considerable dynamics in settling in the quadrats.  相似文献

Patterns of plant species composition and their relationships to soil and topographic variables were investigated in tropical dry forests across the north central Yucatan, Mexico. Seven sites were studied in the oldest accessible forests along a 200–km transect oriented northwest to southeast; an eighth site was located in a little‐disturbed area located 75 km northeast of the transect. Two of the sites were on Mayan ruins. All sites were sampled using 9–24, 10m × 20m plots (<n= 132) for woody stems ≥ 3.0 cm diameter breast height. The important natural forest species were Bursera simaruba, Caesalpinia gaumeri, Gymnopodium floribundum, Piscidia piscipula, and Thouinia paucidentata. The two most important woody species in ruin woodlands were Brosimum alicastrum and Croton lundellii. Forest plots (n=108) had 17 species on average, ruin plots (n= 24) nine species. Mean basal area of stems at the forest plots (20.7 m2.ha‐1) was lower than in ruin plots (28.4 m2.ha‐1). Detrended Correspondence Analysis generally placed plots by site along the geographic transect. Natural forest plots and sites were separated from the plots on ruin sites. The five soil and topographic variables (slope, soil depth, percent surface rock, soil pH, total soil organic matter) differed significantly among sites. Plot values were correlated with DCA axe scores. Intersite floristic variation reflects an overall west to east environmental gradient affected by climate.  相似文献

 在样地面积固定条件下,采用样方设计和样带设计,探讨了样方数目与面积之间的关系,以及样方数目与面积的变化对种间联结的影响。结果表明:正负关联比、平均物种出现率、多物种间X2值、物种对间X2值与显著率以及物种间联结系数的变化范围均可作为确定样方数目与面积的参数。在实际分析中应当综合考虑这些参数,进而选择最佳样方数目及面积进行种间联结分析。在样地总面积均为1 200 m2条件下,样带设计在各项指标上规律性比较明显,样方数为50,面积为25 m2最为合适;样方设计的各项参数稍差一些,需要进一步增加样方总面积才能得到更合适的样方数。分别按选定的最适样方数进行物种对联结性分析,对比分析结果显示样带设计对联结性和关联程度的检测效果好于样方设计,它的研究结果更与实际情况相符合。因此,在总样地面积有限的情况下,样带设计是进行种间联结分析的较好选择。  相似文献

Herb and shrub layer vegetation was surveyed in the oak-pine upland forest of the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey (USA). To describe spatial distributions of individual species, 15 4 m2 quadrats were censused in each of 34 stands. At the scale of whole stands, stem densities were significantly related to several forms of historical disturbance including canopy defoliation and fire. At the scales of 1 m2 and 4 m2 quadrats, distributions of the 19 most abundant species were all aggregated to some degree, with clonal species more strongly clustered than non-clonal. Shrub stems tended to be strongly clustered, and to be distributed independently of leaf litter. By contrast, tree seedlings were only marginally clustered, and were significantly more common in quadrats with a lower litter cover. Clonal herbs exceeded shrubs in degree of aggregation, but were also sensitive to the local accumulation of leaf litter. Distributions of non-clonal herbs were sensitive to leaf litter, but were only marginally clustered, and appeared to depend upon gaps in the tree canopy. Rather than supporting a single life history, a combination of disturbance types has allowed a variety of species with different ecological requirements and growth forms to coexist in the same site. Overall species diversity can be maintained in this ecosystem without invoking community-level interactions.  相似文献

The density, distribution and population structure of Opusia indica were studied through transects method. Two transects were delimited in a mangrove area of Korangi creek (24°79′ N/67°20′ E). On each transect, three 0.25 m2 quadrats were sampled at three tidal levels on a monthly basis during low tide. A total of 1919 crabs were obtained, of which 775 were males, 945 were non-ovigerous females and 199 were ovigerous females. Density of crabs varied between 198 m−2 to 798 m−2. The density and size distribution showed significant difference from low tide level to high tide level and were positively correlated with the percent moisture, percent organic matter and sediment structure. Based on carapace width (CW) males were significantly larger than the females indicating sexual dimorphism. The monthly size frequency distribution of crabs showed recruitment of juvenile crabs (< than 4 mm) nearly throughout the year except in few months. The monthly sex ratio deviated from 1:1 throughout the year, with female bias (χ 2 = 31.633, P = 0.001 and df =11). Breeding was seasonal with peaks in SW monsoon. Size at sexual maturity based on smallest ovigerous female was CW = 4.0 mm. The average number of eggs per female were 2066 ± 479 (n = 25). Positive linear relationship was observed between the size of the female crabs and the egg numbers (r 2 = 0.554).  相似文献

Summary A plot of Poterium-dominated scrub vegetation in Lebanon was sampled by small random quadrats. The presence-absence data obtained were subjected to 2 tests of independence. The species were grouped according to their associations in a species diagram. The quadrats were classified into six homogeneous groups. These two procedures provided a clear picture of the species patterns in the community. A method which removed association due to the slope-angle of the quadrat, caused many species combinations to lose their significance, indicating that microtopography was an important factor in their relationship. Some combinations which retained significance must have other factors controlling their association. A few combinations had increased 2 values, indicating that associations are somewhat lessened by their preferences along the microtopographic gradient.  相似文献

The density and distributions of nests of the subterranean ants were studied by excavation of thirty 1‐m2 quadrats in an evergreen broadleaf forest in central Japan. A total of 20 ant species were collected and the densities of Amblyopone silvestrii and Paratrechina flavipes were highest (both 0.83 nests/m2). The distribution patterns were analyzed by the Standardized Morisita Index (Ip) for the five species that had mean densities of more than 0.5 nests/m2. Of them, A. silvestrii and Hypoponera sauteri showed random distributions, while nests of Paratrechina flavipes were significantly overdispersed and those of Carebara yamatonis and Myrmecina nipponica were weakly clumped. These distributional patterns were discussed in connection with the ecology of the ants. In particular, the social organization of A. silvestrii was investigated based on the distributional pattern and the composition of collected colonies.  相似文献

In the Central Grasslands of the United States, we hypothesized that riparian zones high in soil fertility would contain more exotic plant species than upland areas of low soil fertility. Our alternate hypothesis was that riparian zones high in native plant species richness and cover would monopolize available resources and resist invasion by exotic species. We gathered nested-scale vegetation data from 40 1 m2subplots (nested in four 1000 m2 plots) in both riparian and upland sites at four study areas in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota (a total of 320 1 m2 subplots and 32 1000 m2 plots). At the 1 m2 scale, mean foliar cover of native species was significantly greater (P<0.001) in riparian zones (36.3% ± 1.7%) compared to upland sites (28.7% ± 1.5%), but at this small scale there were no consistent patterns of native and exotic species richness among the four management areas. Mean exotic species cover was slightly higher in upland sites compared to riparian sites (9.0% ± 3.8% versus 8.2% ± 3.0% cover). However, mean exotic species richness and cover were greater in the riparian zones than upland sites in three of four management areas. At the 1000 m2 scale, mean exotic species richness was also significantly greater (P<0.05) in riparian zones (7.8 ± 1.0 species) compared to upland sites (4.8 ± 1.0 species) despite the heavy invasion of one upland site. For all 32 plots combined, 21% of the variance in exotic species richness was explained by positive relationships with soil % silt (t =1.7, P=0.09) and total foliar cover (t = 2.4, P=0.02). Likewise, 26% of the variance in exotic species cover (log10 cover) was explained by positive relationships with soil % silt (t =2.3, P=0.03) and total plant species richness (t = 2.5, P=0.02). At landscape scales (four 1000 m2 plots per type combined), total foliar cover was significantly and positively correlated with exotic species richness (r=0.73, P<0.05) and cover (r=0.74, P<0.05). Exotic species cover (log10 cover) was positively correlated with log10% N in the soil (r=0.61, P=0.11) at landscape scales. On average, we found that 85% (±5%) of the total number of exotic species in the sampling plots of a given management area could be found in riparian zones, while only 50% (±8%) were found in upland plots. We conclude that: (1) species-rich and productive riparian zones are particularly invasible in grassland ecosystems; and (2) riparian zones may act as havens, corridors, and sources of exotic plant invasions for upland sites and pose a significant challenge to land managers and conservation biologists.  相似文献

Macroalgal beds have been suggested to be an important settlement habitat for a diversity of reef fishes, yet few studies have considered how the composition or structure of macroalgal beds may influence fish settlement. The aim of this study was to investigate how the physical characteristics of Sargassum beds, a common macroalga on inshore coral reefs, influence the abundance of recently-settled rabbitfishes (Siganidae) on Orpheus Island, Great Barrier Reef. The abundance of recently-settled rabbitfish (< 3 cm total length), the density and height of Sargassum thalli, and benthic composition were quantified within replicate 1-m2 quadrats across 15 mid-reef flat sites. A total of 419 recently-settled rabbitfish from three species (Siganus doliatus, S. lineatus and S. canaliculatus) were recorded across 150 quadrats (range 0–16 individuals m−2), with S. doliatus accounting for the majority (85.2%) of individuals recorded. The abundance of S. doliatus and S. lineatus was greatest at moderate Sargassum densities (ca. 20–30 holdfasts m−2) and generally increased with Sargassum height and the cover of ‘other’ macroalgae. These findings demonstrate the potential importance of the physical characteristics of macroalgal beds to the settlement of rabbitfishes on inshore reef flats.
