This study was conducted to determine the dietary protein requirement for juvenile Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus. Six fishmeal‐based experimental diets containing various crude protein levels ranging from 300 to 500 g kg?1 were fed to triplicate groups of 20 fish each (initial weight 13.5 ± 1.1 g) for 56 days at a temperature of 28 ± 1°C (tank size 400 × 45 × 40 cm, linked to a recirculation system). Survival was not affected by dietary protein level (overall survival 71 to 90%). Weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) increased with an increasing dietary protein level up to 460 g kg?1. The feed conversion rate (FCR) generally showed a decline at higher protein levels (from 1.62 in 300 g protein kg?1 to 1.13 in 500 g protein kg?1 feed). Protein efficiency ratio (PER) showed gradual improvements with increasing dietary protein up to 460 g kg?1. A similar trend was found for the protein productive value (PPV). Among the proximate compositions of the fish, crude protein content increased significantly with increasing dietary protein levels. Based on broken‐line regression analysis of SGR against dietary protein levels, the optimal dietary protein requirement for juvenile Chinese sucker was estimated to be close to 465 g kg?1.  相似文献

The effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulated from propolis and Herba Epimedii extracts at the ratio of 3:1 (w/w) on non-specific immune response of Chinese sucker (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) was investigated. Fish were fed diets containing 0 (control), 0.1%, 0.5% or 1.0% TCM extracts for five weeks. The respiratory burst and phagocytic activities of blood leukocytes, lysozyme and natural haemolytic complement activities in plasma were measured weekly. After five weeks of feeding, fish were infected with Aeromonas hydrophila and mortalities were recorded. Results of this study showed that feeding Chinese sucker with different dosage of TCM extracts stimulated respiratory burst activity, phagocytosis of phagocytic cells in blood and lysozyme activity in plasma. They had no effect on plasma natural haemolytic complement activity. All dosage of treated groups showed reduced mortality following A. hydrophila infection. Feed containing 0.5% TCM extracts was the most effective with the mortality of the fish significantly reduced by 35% compared to the control. The results indicate that propolis and Herba Epimedii extracts in combination enhances the non-specific immune response and disease resistance of Chinese sucker against A. hydrophila.  相似文献

Otolith thermal marking was conducted in larval Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, by exposing the larvae to water with different temperature regimes ranging from heated water (28°C) to chilled water (16°C) at different time intervals. The results showed that increment patterns differed among groups; the control of duration in the heated water could produce some increments much narrower or wider than those deposited in the natural diel water temperature fluctuation; there was a significantly positive relation between increment width and the duration reared in heated water in each cycle of water temperature fluctuation. These increments with abnormal widths were thermal marks in otoliths, and would be used as bar codes to track the released individuals, and discriminate them from the wild populations in the future. The thermal marking is suitable to mass-mark the Chinese sucker larvae.  相似文献

Noise‐induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most frequent disabilities in industrialized countries. Evidence shows that hair cell loss in the auditory end organ is responsible for the majority of various ear pathological conditions. The functional roles of the receptor tyrosine kinase ROR1 have been underscored in various tumours. In this study, we evaluated the ability of ROR1 to influence cochlear hair cell loss of guinea pigs with NIHL. The NIHL model was developed in guinea pigs, with subsequent measurement of the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Gain‐of‐function experiments were employed to explore the role of ROR1 in NIHL. The interaction between ROR1 and Wnt5a and their functions in the cochlear hair cell loss were further analysed in response to alteration of ROR1 and Wnt5a. Guinea pigs with NIHL demonstrated elevated ABR threshold and down‐regulated ROR1, Wnt5a and NF‐κB p65. The up‐regulation of ROR1 was shown to decrease the cochlear hair cell loss and the expression of pro‐apoptotic gene (Bax, p53) in guinea pig cochlea, but promoted the expression of anti‐apoptotic gene (Bcl‐2) and the fluorescence intensity of cleaved‐caspase‐3. ROR1 interacted with Wnt5a to activate the NF‐κB signalling pathway through inducing phosphorylation and translocation of p65. Furthermore, Wnt5a overexpression decreased the cochlear hair cell loss. Collectively, this study suggested the protection of overexpression of ROR1 against cochlear hair cell loss in guinea pigs with NIHL via the Wnt5a‐dependent NF‐κB signalling pathway.  相似文献

Otolith development was observed and the formation of daily growth increments in otoliths of Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, was validated by monitoring known-age larvae and juveniles in the laboratory from 2003 to 2005. Otolith shape changed with larval and juvenile development, and there was an exponential relationship until a body length of 16 mm or so, and a linear relationship after a body length of 16 mm between otolith size and fish size. The first increment was identified in larvae 1 day after hatching. The regressed equations between daily age (D) and increment number in otoliths (N) were N = −0.64 + 0.96D in lapillus, and N = −0.31 + 0.98D in sagitta. The slopes were not significantly different than 1.0. This demonstrated that otolith increments in this species were formed daily and can be used for daily age determination.  相似文献

Effects of water temperature, starvation and photoperiod on otolith increment formation in larval Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, were examined in this study. The results demonstrated that otolith increments of larvae reared under diel temperature fluctuations were very clear and appeared with a high contrast, while those of larvae raised under constant water temperatures were vague or hard to identify. The increment deposition rates were less than 1.0/day in later stage of starvation period. Also, increment deposition was affected by cyclic regimes of water temperature fluctuations, the number of increments corresponded to the cycle times rather than the exact days larvae experienced. However, varying of feeding frequency and photoperiod did not result in any alterations of daily increment formation. Increment width increased obviously with higher rearing temperatures till several days after yolk absorption. However, the width presented an ontogenetic decline during period of endogenous nutrition and the first several days of exogenous nutrition stage. Starvation decoupled the relationship between somatic growth and otolith growth; otolith kept growing, and increment width of starved larvae was similar to those in fed individuals before 9–20 days old; the divergence of increment width from the fed larvae occurred in later stage of starvation period. It can be concluded that temperature regimes and food levels are the major factors affecting increment formation in terms of clarity, deposition rate and width, while photoperiod and feeding frequency have less influence on it.  相似文献

Five‐week‐old silver barb, Barbodes gonionotus, fry (initial length = 10 mm) were subjected to different salinities of 0, 3, 6 or 9 ppt for 17 days, to then assess their survival and growth. Whole body histological sections were stained with Periodic‐acid Schiff (PAS). Groups of 15 fish were triplicated in each treatment with an ambient temperature (26–28°C). Results showed that growth and condition factor significantly decreased and increased (p < .05), respectively, with the increased salinities after 17 days. While survival was similar (p > .05), between 0 and 6 ppt (at 98% and 87%, respectively), the decrease was significant at 9 ppt (22%). In addition, the fry at 9 ppt had fewer gill mucous cells as well as reduced PAS positive staining intensity within the liver and intestine. This suggests energy was becoming exhausted, leading to mortalities and lower growth. Silver barb early fry were relatively sensitive to elevated salinity, which was likely due to their young age, but short‐term exposure to 3–6 ppt can be used to decrease potential freshwater diseases in the early nursery culture.  相似文献

Abstract Geographic divergence in phenotypic traits between long‐isolated populations likely has a genetic basis, but can phenotypic plasticity generate such divergence rapidly in the initial stages of isolation? Australian tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus, Elapidae) provide a classic model system for the evolution of body size: mean adult sizes are relatively invariant in mainland populations, but many offshore islands have dwarf or giant populations. Previous work has shown a genetic basis to this divergence in long‐isolated islands (>10 000 years), but what of the initial stages of this process? Human translocation of mainland snakes to Carnac Island 90 years ago gives us a unique opportunity to assess the proximate reasons for the giant size of Carnac Island animals compared with mainland conspecifics. Our data suggest a major role for phenotypic plasticity. Feeding trials on captive snakes from both island and mainland populations showed a strong link between food intake and growth rates, similar in the two populations. Snakes given abundant food grew much larger than we have ever recorded in the wild, demonstrating that observed mean body sizes are driven by food availability rather than genetic limits to growth. In combination with earlier work showing genetic divergence in growth rates in snakes from long‐isolated islands, our data suggest that geographical divergence in mean adult body sizes in this system initially is driven by a rapid shift due to phenotypic plasticity, with the divergence later canalized by a gradual accumulation of genetic differentiation.  相似文献

A cDNA library of male Chinese seahorse (Hippocampus kuda Bleeker) was constructed to investigate the molecular profile of seahorse as one of the most famous traditional Chinese medicine materials, and to reveal immunological and physiological mechanisms of seahorse as one of the most primitive vertebrates at molecular level. A total of 3372 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) consisting of 1911 unique genes (345 clusters and 1566 singletons) were examined in the present study. Identification of the genes related to immune system, paternal brooding and physiological regulation provides not only valuable insights into the molecular mechanism of immune system in teleost fish but also plausible explanations for pharmacological activities of Chinese seahorse. Furthermore, the occurrence of high prevalent C-type lectins suggested that a lectin-complement pathway might exert a more dominant function in the innate immune system of teleost than mammal. Carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) without a collagen-like region in the lectins of seahorse was likely an ancient characteristic of lectins similar to invertebrates.  相似文献

Barbodes gonionotus (Puntius gonionotus/javanicus, Bleeker) is a cyprinid fish, endemic to South‐east Asia and is of great importance in both wild fisheries and in aquaculture in the region. It is a common to dominant species in the middle and lower stretches of medium and large rivers. Five highly polymorphic microsatellite loci are described (HO = 0.7–0.9, number of alleles per locus = 10–37), which will be of use both in population genetic studies and for the assessment of true effective breeding population sizes in aquaculture stocks.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships (LWRs) and length‐length relationships (LLRs) for two tropical fish species from Marudu Bay, Sabah were studied. Specimens were caught with the traditional ‘Bagan net’ fishing gear from October 2012 to September 2013, using the light trap method. The maximum total length for Rhabdamia gracilis (7.4 cm) reported in this study is a new record for this species. No information regarding length‐weight relationships was reported previously in FishBase for either Secutor megalolepis or Rhabdamia gracilis.  相似文献

Topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva) is one of the most invasive organisms in recent times. It can spread very quickly due to its attributes, which predetermine its success in novel environments. One source of these attributes appears to be phenotypic plasticity. The reproductive parameters of a long‐term established population from a stable habitat exposed to a strong disturbance were the subject of the present study. The results supported the prediction that such a strong disturbance will increase the absolute number of oocytes and decrease their size significantly. Of course, changes in life‐history can be observed in any species of fish, regardless of whether the disturbance occurs in a native or an introduced habitat. However, the hypothesis of alternative ontogenies and invasive potential presumes that the wider the range between the most generalized and the most specialized phenotypes that a species can generate, the wider is its invasive potential. The observed shift in reproductive traits demonstrates the high phenotypic plasticity of topmouth gudgeon.  相似文献

This study investigates length‐weight and length‐length relationships of two species of the tropical shads, Tenualosa macrura (Bleeker, 1852) and Tenualosa toli (Valenciennes, 1847) collected from the coastal waters of Sadong (1°30′59.4”N and 110°44′46.4”E) and Sebuyau (1°31′26.8”N and 110°58′05.8”E), Sarawak, Malaysia. The fish were captured using gill nets (mesh size range 5–12 cm) operated by mechanized boat along the coast of Sadong and Sebuyau, Sarawak. Relative growth coefficient (b) was 2.942 and 3.408 for males and females of T. macrura while 2.909 and 3.178 for males and females of T. toli. All LWRs were significant (p < .05) between sexes for both species with the coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from .85 to .99. This report provides the reference of length weight relationship (LWR) models for the two species in their range of distribution.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

Intraspecific trends in freshwater mussel (unionoid) shells that are consistently associated with differences in the mussels' sex and/or parasitic infestation can potentially be used to reconstruct sex ratios or parasitic levels of modern and ancient unionoid populations. In contrast to morphological patterns within mammal species, such dimorphic trends within unionoid species are, however, poorly understood. This study investigates, for the first time, to what extent sex, trematode infection and indirect habitat effects determine shell morphology in the freshwater mussel Anodonta anatina. Three of the five study populations displayed significant sexual shell width dimorphism. Here, shells of females were significantly wider than males, probably as a result of altered shell growth to accommodate marsupial gills. In two of these populations, female shells were additionally significantly thinner than those of males, which could be a result of resource depletion by offspring production. Two other A. anatina populations showed no significant dimorphic patterns, and our results indicate that this interpopulational difference in the degree of sexual dimorphism may reflect the overarching effect of habitat on morphology. Thus, populations in the most favourable habitats exhibit faster growth rates, attain larger maximum sizes and produce more offspring, which results in more swollen gills and consequently more inflated shells of gravid females compared to less fecund populations. None of the populations showed any evidence for sexual dimorphism in overall size, growth rate, sagittal shape and density of shells. In addition to sexual dimorphisms, infestation by bucephalid trematode parasites (Rhipidocotyle sp.) significantly altered sagittal and lateral shell shape of A. anatina in one of the populations, with infected specimens growing wider and more elongated. ABSTRACT

Male-biased sexual size dimorphism typically evolves via sexual selection for larger males that are favoured by choosy females or are more successful in mate competition with other males. Among marine invertebrates that broadcast their gametes into the ocean for fertilisation, this form of sexual size dimorphism is rare because such species lack direct interactions among males or between the sexes. However, the broadcast-spawning tusk shell Rhabdus rectius was recently reported to show strong male-biased sexual size dimorphism. That pattern might imply interesting and undiscovered sexual selection in this species. We found instead that the distribution of body size variation (weight, shell length) was similar between males and females of R. rectius, and mean sizes were not different between the sexes. However, we noted a male-biased sex ratio (~1:1.3) in our large sample of individuals. Many live scaphopods (and several dead shells) showed partial or complete boreholes drilled by predatory gastropods. Boreholes were observed on males and females in similar proportions. We collected scaphopods along with multiple individuals of one likely scaphopod predator, the small moon snail Euspira pallida, and in the lab we observed successful attacks by moon snails on tusk shells.  相似文献
