Bioassays were conducted to determine the susceptibility of egg masses of Mamestra brassicae and Spodoptera littoralis to different spore doses of Paecilomyces fumoso-roseus and Nomuraea rileyi at 20° and 25°C. P. fumoso-roseus was highly virulent against eggs, whereas N. rileyi provoked only a deferred mortality of larvae hatched from treated eggs. Nevertheless, larval mortality of S. littoralis caused by N. rileyi at 25°C was more effective after first-instar larval contamination than after egg mass treatment. The duration of the egg stage could explain differences of susceptibility between the two noctuids at 25°C. Scanning electron microscopical observations suggested two ways of contamination of newly hatched larvae. First, fungal germinations on the chorion surface suggested that newly hatched larvae might be infected by penetration of the egg integument before hatching. Second, conidia on the egg cuticle could be an entomopathogenic inoculum for newly emerging larvae which fed upon chorions. Results showed that pathogenicity of Hyphomycetes to noctuid eggs might be a promising area of investigation for biological control.  相似文献

We compared the susceptibility of five herbivores to tomato resistance induced by methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment. We tested for lethal effects against five herbivores (Spodoptera litura, Mamestra brassicae, Frankliniella occidentalis, Tetranychus urticae, and Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata) at various MeJA concentrations. The mortality of all five herbivores increased significantly with increasing MeJA concentration. The 25 % lethal concentration was 0.03 μM for both first-instar larvae of S. litura and third-instar larvae of M. brassicae, 0.51 μM for third-instar larvae of S. litura, 0.76 μM for adult T. urticae, 2.4 μM for first-instar larvae of F. occidentalis, and 5.7 μM for first-instar larvae of H. vigintioctopunctata. Thus, the degree of susceptibility to MeJA-induced resistance of tomato was first-instar larvae of S. litura = third-instar larvae of M. brassicae > third-instar larvae of S. litura ≈ adult T. urticae > first-instar larvae of F. occidentalis > first-instar larvae of H. vigintioctopunctata. Mortality of first-instar larvae of M. brassicae was >90 % at all concentrations. Mortality of fourth-instar larvae of H. vigintioctopunctata (<7 %) was similar to that of the control at all MeJA concentrations. We also detected statistically significant weight loss of the surviving lepidopteran larvae, increased larval duration of F. occidentalis and H. vigintioctopunctata, and reduced egg production by T. urticae grown on MeJA-treated tomato, suggesting that the MeJA-induced resistance can control these herbivores, but effectiveness is different on different species and growth stage. Fungi isolated from field-collected egg masses of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, were identified as Alternaria spp., A. porri, Fusarium spp., Fusarium oxysporum, Beauveria bassiana, Mucor spp., and an unidentified yeast. Most fungi were associated with predator injury to the egg mass. Bioassay of fungi on egg masses, however, showed that Alternaria spp. and A. porri reduced the hatch of both injured and uninjured egg masses, and Mucor sp. reduced the hatch only when the egg mass was injured.  相似文献

Eggs of the European skipper, Thymelicus lineola, containing pharate first-instar larvae were brought into the laboratory at the beginning of each month from September to May and maintained at 20°C, 14L:10D. No emergence was observed within 40 days of collection before December. From that time on, while total emergence was similar, the duration of the emergence period decreased over the season from > 120 days in December to < 14 days in May. There was however no marked change in the seasonal supercooling point values of diapausing larvae.The rate of emergence from eggs collected in March was influenced by photoperiod, being slower under short-day conditions. However for any given photoperiod tested, the rate of emergence increased with an increase in temperature. The possible adaptive significance of a two-phase diapause, where diapause termination is photoperiodically controlled in species that overwinter as an egg or as a pharate first-instar larva within the egg chorion in exposed habitats, is discussed.  相似文献

A survey of the parasitoids of the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), in the Mariana Islands showed that few of the borers were parasitized. Parasitoids were reared from only 30 pupae out of more than 4 500 sampled. Three species of pupal parasitoids were found:Xanthopimpla punctata (F.),Brachymeria albotibialis (Ashmead) andTetrastichus? inferens Yoshimoto. No parasitoids were reared from mature larvae. The only egg parasitoid observed wasTrichogramma chilonis Ishii. During the month prior to the sweet corn harvest, which was the peak period of moth oviposition, about 40% of the egg masses had at least one egg parasitized. An average of about 35% of the eggs within a mass were parasitized.  相似文献

Algae colonize the gelatinous egg masses of marine invertebrates. This study demonstrates a symbiotic relationship between marine algae and the invertebrate embryos in gelatinous egg masses found in Indian River Lagoon, FL, USA. The benefits to the embryos in this association differ among host species investigated. The embryos of the polychaete Axiothella mucosa graze on the diatom assemblage in their egg masses and the fitness of the crawl-away juveniles is improved by this food source. The tenuous egg masses of the polychaete Arenicola cristata and the mollusk Haminoea succinea are negatively buoyant when spawned and become buoyant when symbiotic algae are present. In addition to increased dispersal of their lecithotrophic larvae, the potential of the egg masses of A. cristata and H. succinea to float may reduce predation on the embryos by benthic predators such as the gastropod Nassarius vibex. Photosynthetically derived oxygen from the algae may benefit the embryos of the opisthobranch Haminoea elegans by increasing oxygen supply when crawl-away juveniles emerge from the egg mass. However, when mostly earlier stage larvae are hatched from egg masses of H. elegans, the additional oxygen supplied by the algae does not provide a substantial advantage. Algae were absent in the gelatinous egg mass core of only one of the five species examined, Haminoea antillarum. H. antillarum has both a short embryonic development time and denser egg mass gel than the other four species tested. What is not understood is whether invertebrate egg masses are an opportunistic space for algae to colonize or whether only a few microalgal species can exploit the gelatinous substrate.  相似文献

Trophobiotic associations between Caternaultiella rugosa (Heteroptera; Plataspidae) and two ant species, Camponotus brutus (Formicidae) and Myrmicaria opaciventris (Myrmicinae), were recorded at the base of the trunks of Bridelia micrantha (Euphorbiaceae). The bug colonies were generally sheltered in pavilions built by the ants, but during periods of proliferation, part of the colonies developed outside the pavilions. We examined the protective activity of the two associated ant species against an encyrtid parasitoid wasp that parasitized egg masses of the bug. Egg masses situated outside the pavilions were significantly less parasitized on trees occupied by either ant species than on experimental trees where ants were excluded by a sticky barrier. Egg masses were significantly less parasitized on trees occupied by C. brutus than on those occupied by M. opaciventris, both inside and outside the pavilions. Moreover, they were less parasitized inside than outside the pavilions when protected by C. brutus. Inside the pavilions, parental care of the egg masses and first-instar nymphs was abandoned to the ants. In contrast, outside the pavilions, the females of C. rugosa guarded egg masses and clusters of first-instar nymphs. Furthermore, adults and last-instar nymphs grouped around and above first-instar nymphs, forming a protective shield. These groups formed and disintegrated daily, according to the attending ant's rhythm of activity.  相似文献

The infectivity and development of four populations of Meloidogyne hapla were compared, at three temperatures, on tomato and two varieties of cucumber. A population from Canada produced few root-galls on cucumber and, except at 24 C, no larvae developed into adult females and produced egg masses. In contrast, a population with 45 chromosomes from America produced many galls on cucumber and small proportions of larvae became females and produced egg masses at 20 and 24 C. At 18 C this population produced no egg masses on cucumber, but a population from Britain and one from America with 17 chromosomes produced more egg masses at this temperature than at 20 or 24 C. Dissection of the galls showed that on cucumber many larvae died or their growth and development was slowed.  相似文献

The insecticidal activity and receptor binding properties of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1A toxins towards the forest pests Thaumetopoea pityocampa (processionary moth) and Lymantria monacha (nun moth) were investigated. Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, and Cry1Ac were highly toxic (corresponding 50% lethal concentration values: 956, 895, and 379 pg/μl, respectively) to first-instar T. pityocampa larvae. During larval development, Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac toxicity decreased with increasing age, although the loss of activity was more pronounced for Cry1Ab. Binding assays with 125I-labelled Cry1Ab and brush border membrane vesicles from T. pityocampa first- and last-instar larvae detected a remarkable decrease in the overall Cry1Ab binding affinity in last-instar larvae, although saturable Cry1Ab binding to both instars was observed. Homologous competition experiments demonstrated the loss of one of the two Cry1Ab high-affinity binding sites detected in first-instar larvae. Growth inhibition assays with sublethal doses of Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, and Cry1Ac in L. monacha showed that all three toxins were able to delay molting from second instar to third instar. Specific saturable binding of Cry1Ab was detected only in first- and second-instar larvae. Cry1Ab binding was not detected in last-instar larvae, although specific binding of Cry1Aa and Cry1Ac was observed. These results demonstrate a loss of Cry1Ab binding sites during development on the midgut epithelium of T. pityocampa and L. monacha, correlating in T. pityocampa with a decrease in Cry1Ab toxicity with increasing age.  相似文献

Insects of the family Chironomidae, also known as chironomids, are distributed worldwide in a variety of water habitats. These insects display a wide range of tolerance toward metals and organic pollutions. Bacterial species known for their ability to degrade toxicants were identified from chironomid egg masses, leading to the hypothesis that bacteria may contribute to the survival of chironomids in polluted environments. To gain a better understanding of the bacterial communities that inhabit chironomids, the endogenous bacteria of egg masses and larvae were studied by 454-pyrosequencing. The microbial community of the egg masses was distinct from that of the larval stage, most likely due to the presence of one dominant bacterial Firmicutes taxon, which consisted of 28% of the total sequence reads from the larvae. This taxon may be an insect symbiont. The bacterial communities of both the egg masses and the larvae were found to include operational taxonomic units, which were closely related to species known as toxicant degraders. Furthermore, various bacterial species with the ability to detoxify metals were isolated from egg masses and larvae. Koch-like postulates were applied to demonstrate that chironomid endogenous bacterial species protect the insect from toxic heavy metals. We conclude that chironomids, which are considered pollution tolerant, are inhabited by stable endogenous bacterial communities that have a role in protecting their hosts from toxicants. This phenomenon, in which bacteria enable the continued existence of their host in hostile environments, may not be restricted only to chironomids.  相似文献

Field-collected female goldeneyed lacewing (Chrysopa oculata) strongly avoided ovipositing on substrates exposed over 24 h to three of four lady beetle species tested, resulting in circa 3-fold higher egg deposition on control versus coccinellid-exposed substrates. The relative activities of spore-crystal complexes and thermostable exotoxin produced by six subspecies of Bacillus thuringiensis were investigated using larvae of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis. Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kenyae, subsp. galleriae, and subsp. kurstaki produced spore-cystal complexes active against the borer. Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. thuringiensis and subsp. darmstadiensis produced thermostable exotoxins active against the borer. Only one subspecies, B. thuringiensis subsp. tolworthi, produced both a spore-crystal complex and a thermostable exotoxin active against corn borer larvaer.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the protection of embryos and larvae in egg masses from reduced salinity and desiccation was investigated in the gastropod Epheria turrita, which inhabits the intertidal and upper subtidal zones. Embryos and larvae developing inside egg masses were shown not to be protected against changes in environmental salinity. Viable larvae hatched from egg masses at a salinity of 24–26. However, if free-swimming veliger larvae, rather than egg masses, were transferred to water of reduced salinity, the range of salinity tolerated by the larvae was wider, and its lower limit was 18–20. Egg masses did not protect against desiccation either. A 3-h exposure of egg masses to drying resulted in larval mortality. Larvae hatched from egg masses did not rise to the surface and displayed an early tendency towards gregarious behavior, which apparently enhances their ability to settle on a proper substrate near parental populations.  相似文献

A lepidopteran toxin gene of the entomopathogen Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-1 was introduced into a cotton leaf-colonizing Bacillus megaterium strain, RS1, by conjugal transfer. Rifampin- and nalidixic acid-resistant colonies obtained after cell mating were screened for crystal production by microscopy. A transcipient, B. megaterium RS1-43, was selected by this procedure. Southern blot hybridization with both total DNA and HindIII-digested DNA of the transcipient showed positive signals with a cryIA-specific probe, suggesting the transfer of the lepidopteran-specific cryIA(a) gene. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblot analysis confirmed the presence of the 134-kDa toxic crystal protein specific to lepidopteran larvae in the transcipient. Survival studies with cultures of the transcipient at both vegetative and postvegetative growth stages on cotton, under field conditions, suggested that the bacterium persisted on the leaf surfaces for more than 28 days, with a gradual decline in the population level with time, while the donor, B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki, disappeared completely after 7 days following inoculation. An in situ differential crystal-staining technique indicated the production of crystals by the transcipient on cotton leaf surfaces for about 30 days. Leaf bioassays of cotton plants inoculated with a single spray of the transcipient showed 75- to 96% mortality to the first-instar larvae of Heliothis armigera up to 21 days, and this single spray conferred total protection to the plants for about 30 days by causing an antifeeding effect on the remaining larvae.  相似文献

Different doses of a granulosis virus were administered to first- and fifth-instar larvae of the codling moth Laspeyresia pomonella. Virus was very pathogenic for both larval instars. The LD50 values for first- and fifth-instar larvae were 5 and 49 capsules/larva, respectively. However, fifth-instar larvae were much more variable in their response to virus than first-instar larvae. Using probit methods it was calculated that 1 capsule could cause death in about 25% of both larval instars but 1578 capsules were required to cause 70% mortality of fifth-instar larvae as compared to 12 capsules for first-instar larvae. This is the first report of a decided difference in variability of response to virus by two larval instars of the same species. A bimodal response by both larval instars was observed in time-mortality studies. Apparently, about 20% of the larvae were very resistant to virus infections.  相似文献

Larvae of the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon Hufnagel, were more susceptible to infection by A. ipsilon multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgipMNPV: Baculoviridae) after feeding on Herculex® I, a transgenic corn hybrid expressing the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-derived toxin Cry1Fa2 compared to larvae fed on isoline corn. We investigated the physiological basis for increased susceptibility to virus infection following exposure to Herculex® I by analyzing the midgut pH, gut protease activity and peritrophic matrix structure which are important factors for both Bt toxin action and baculovirus infection. No significant treatment differences were found in the pH of anterior midgut, central midgut or posterior midgut in larvae fed Herculex® I or isoline diets. Analysis of soluble and membrane-associated gut proteinase activities from larvae fed Herculex® I or isoline diets indicated that membrane-associated aminopeptidase activity and soluble chymotrypsin-like proteinase activity were significantly lower in Herculex® I -fed larvae compared to isoline-fed larvae. The number and relative molecular masses of soluble chymotrypsin-like proteinases did not differ. Baculoviruses were not susceptible to in vitro degradation by bovine chymotrypsin, suggesting that chymotrypsin degradation of baculovirus occlusion-derived virus did not result in reduced infection of larvae fed on isoline diet. Scanning electron micrographs of the peritrophic matrices of Herculex® I -fed larvae and isoline-fed larvae indicated that Herculex® I did not result in damage to the peritrophic matrix that could facilitate subsequent baculovirus infection. Additional research is required to further delineate the physiological basis for enhanced baculovirus infection following exposure to sublethal doses of Bt toxins.  相似文献

【目的】明确吉林省二代区亚洲玉米螟Ostriniafurnacalis(Guenee)发生趋势,为亚洲玉米螟的早期防治提供理论依据。【方法】2002—2013年采用田间调查的方法对吉林省二代区亚洲玉米螟的田间落卵量及为害趋势进行研究,同时分析田间落卵和为害情况的关系。【结果】亚洲玉米螟1代卵始见期在6月14日左右,高峰期在6月25日左右,末期在7月15日左右;2代卵始见期在7月25日左右,高峰期在8月15日左右,末期在9月1日左右。1代落卵量呈整体下降趋势,2代落卵量呈整体增加趋势,两代之间微弱相关(r=-0.058,P=0.857)。百株虫孔数呈整体下降趋势,虫量和被害株率在年度间呈不规则波动,整体发生趋势12年间未发生明显变化。通过对亚洲玉米螟卵量和玉米受害情况进行相关分析和通径分析,表明亚洲玉米螟为害是两代共同作用的结果,1代落卵量对越冬虫量影响很小,秋季剖杆时玉米螟的越冬虫量主要由2代落卵量决定,但1代落卵量对秋季剖杆百株虫孔数和被害株率的贡献大于2代。【结论】1代玉米螟发生重,秋季收获时虫孔数较多;2代玉米螟发生重,秋季收获时虫量较大;玉米螟秋季剖杆百株虫孔数整体下降,但被害株率没有发生显著变化,说明2代玉米螟为害呈逐年加重趋势。  相似文献

Rifampicin administered per os in artificial medium to first-instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis together with nuclear polyhedrosis virus did not affect virus infection and resulted in total larval mortality. A pharmacokinetic study of this antibiotic was carried out by means of a microbiological assay. Using Bacillus thuringiensis var. thuringiensis as the test organism for assaying the antibiotic, as little as 0.5 μg of Rifampicin could be detected in the presence of hemolymph, and no such detectable amounts could be found in the hemolymph of sixth instar larvae which had been fed the antibiotic. Most if not all of the antibiotic was in the feces, excreted in active form. When given parenterally, Rifampicin was detected in the hemolymph 30 min after injection but not 24 hr thereafter, when active antibiotic was found concentrated in the first fecal pellets evacuated after injection. This disappearance is ascribed to excretion via the Malpighian tubules. The larval responses detailed above preclude the testing of Rifampicin as an antiviral drug against nuclear polyhedrosis.  相似文献
