Anglers' records as a tool for assessing changes in fish populations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Published anglers’ records from Polish rivers between 1966–1991 were used to show shifts in body weight of two obligatory riverine species: barbel [Barbus barbus(L.)], and chub [Leuciscus cephalus (L.)]. The body weight of barbel significantly decreased while that of chub did not. In 1966–89, the quality of inland waters continuously decreased, a result mainly from nutrient element input (domestic and agricultural). Hence, we consider two factors which were mainly responsible for reduction in fish size: overfishing and, perhaps, eutrophication.  相似文献

Rapid and dramatic change in the fish community of Loch Lomond has resulted from a series of fish introductions in recent years. A comparison of the diet of pike, Esox lucius L., in 1989–1990 with data from 1955–1967, prior to recent introductions, demonstrates a shift in prey choice. In 1955–1967 powan, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), dominated in the diet (57% of prey by number) by 1989–1990 the introduced ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus (L.), was the commonest prey species (44% by number). This shift in pike predation to an abundant population of introduced ruffe has consequences for native species. Assuming that the pike population has not increased in response to increased food availability due to the introduction of ruffe, pike predation pressure on native species will be relieved. This is likely to have the greatest effect on powan. Comparison of the predation rate in 1955–1967 with 1989–1990 supports the hypothesis that the rate of predation on powan has declined, although the effect that this may have on the powan population is unclear, as the role of predation in the regulation of population size is unknown for this species.  相似文献

Variation in the growth patterns of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), pike, Esox lucius L., and chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.) was examined along the upper Warta River, where human impact (mostly pollution) has influenced the longitudinal zonation on the fish assemblage. Significant differences were found in the exponent of weight-length relationships for roach and chub populations occupying different zones of the river, but no such variation was observed in pike. Moreover, pike growth was isometric, whereas roach and chub grew allometrically, with regression coefficients (slope) above 3. Although the length-at-age data were similar for each zone, the von Bertalanffy parameters (L inf, K and t 0) suggest that there may exist some inter-zone variation in the overall growth patterns of these species. All the species grew better in the zone where the index of relative abundance (relating dominance of a particular species to its maximum abundance in river system) achieved its highest value. The results suggest that a relative abundance index expressed in this way can be a good index of habitat quality.  相似文献

In this study we tried to develop a uniform method of sperm cryopreservation for four cyprinid fish species indigenous to Hungarian waters: the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), the bream (Abramis brama L.), the silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna L.) and the barbel (Barbus barbus L.). The sperm was frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor in the presence of five extenders (350 mm fructose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 350 mm glucose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 300 mm sucrose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 200 mm KCl, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0 and modified Kurokura's extender) and two cryoprotectants: 10% methanol (MeOH) and 10% dimethyl‐sulfoxide. The highest post‐thaw motility (roach: 77 ± 6%, bream: 77 ± 6%, silver bream: 67 ± 5%, barbel: 75 ± 6%), fertilization (roach: 84 ± 4%, bream: 83 ± 2%, silver bream: 63 ± 2%, barbel: 70 ± 4%) and hatching (roach: 74 ± 2%, bream: 67 ± 6%, silver bream: 54 ± 2%, barbel: 61 ± 4%) rates were found when either fructose or glucose extenders were used in combination with MeOH as cryoprotectant for all four investigated species. Strong correlations were found between post‐thaw motility of the sperm and fertilization or hatching rates, which indicates that motility can be used to predict fertilization success in these species.  相似文献

Sensitiveness to the overall influence of the river channel regulation, impoundment and pollution was studied for 12 non-obligatory riverine (NOR) fish species in the Warta River, Poland, over the period of 1963–1998. Their total abundance has not considerably changed unlike the structure of their aggregation, which was revealed by a self-organizing map (SOM, Kohonen unsupervised artificial neural network) almost perfectly separating 1960s samples from 1990s ones. The greatest changes in proportion were recorded for the dominant roach Rutilus rutilus (from 28.6 to 60.0%), perch Perca fluviatilis (1.9 to 9.5%), pike Esox lucius (2.9 to 4.9%), and the former codominant bleak Alburbus alburnus (22.9 to 1.8%). They resulted from highly significant (p < 0.001), reaching even one order of magnitude, differences in the abundance of these species. Such remarkable alternations in dominant NOR ichthyofauna obviously influenced the whole fish assemblage structure, which was best illustrated by a clear vertical gradient over SOM in Simpson and Shannon indices. Thus, NOR species, both studied together and separately, can supply valuable information on the fish assemblage dynamics and should not be neglected in temporal analyses, often focused only on vulnerable obligatory riverine, migratory and/or endemic species.  相似文献

The distribution, specificity and pathogenicity of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis (Müller) were studied in the River Avon, Hampshire. The parasite occurred in every fish species, but three categories of hosts could be distinguished. Using growth and maturation as criteria of specificity, only chub Leuciscus cephalus (L.) and barbel Barbus barbus (L.) were recognized as its preferred hosts. Parasites occasionally matured in trout Salmo trutta (L.) and dace Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), but none grew or matured in other host species. Changes in the abundance of P. laevis along the river were related to changes in the abundance of both the intermediate host, Gammarus pulex , and the preferred hosts, and its occurrence in fish to the importance of G. pulex in their diet. In the upper reaches of the River Avon and in other localities populations could be maintained at a low level by parasites maturing in trout, and presence and abundance at any site depended upon the presence and abundance of both intermediate and definitive hosts especially and upon the dietary preferences of the latter. The absence of P. laevis from many parts of Britain is nevertheless still inexplicable. The parasite caused local damage to the intestinal wall of fish, the extent of which varied from species to species, but did not affect host growth rate or cause direct mortality and P. laevis cannot be regarded as an important pathogen in the River Avon or any other British River.  相似文献

Immediate mortality induced by electrofishing and handling of young‐of the‐year (YOY) fish of five cyprinid species (bitterling Rhodeus amarus, chub Leuciscus cephalus, bleak Alburnus alburnus, barbel Barbus barbus, roach Rutilus rutilus) was quantified during routine YOY fish monitoring (point abundance sampling with backpack electrofisher, in situ identification and measurement). Sampled, identified and measured fish were held in screened containers immersed in the river for 5 h after electrofishing. Bleak exhibited significantly higher mortality (17%) than all other species (1–3%). Mortality decreased significantly with fish length; fish <35 mm exhibited the highest mortality. Anode size (10, 20, and 30 cm diameter) had no direct effect on mortality. Point abundance electrofishing with in situ identification and measurement is a safe method for sampling riverine YOY cyprinids.  相似文献

From March 1998 to February 1999, upstream fish passage was continuously monitored by video tape analysis at the fish lift Touvedo Dam on the Lima River, northern Portugal. A total of 1194 individuals from seven species were transferred by the lift. Cyprinids were the dominant group collected, with Iberian nase Chondrostoma polylepis (Steindachner) (31.8%) being the most abundant species, followed by Iberian barbel Barbus bocagei (Steindachner) (21.1%), Iberian dace Leuciscus carolitertii (Doadrio) (19.2%) and Iberian red roach Rutilus arcasii (Steindachner) (7.1%). Brown trout Salmo trutta fario (L.) and European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) accounted for 10.8%, whereas Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (L.) was rarely observed. Most cyprinid seasonal movements were observed in the spring and were associated with reproduction. The timing of the run varied and its beginning appeared to be mainly dependent on water temperature. Roach, dace and nase used the fish lift intensively from mid-April until the end of summer. Barbel use of the lift intensified in mid-May in association with warmer water. Salmonids migrated in June–July and autumn. Significant differences were not found in hourly activity, except for nase and barbel, in June and July, respectively. Fish passage was not related to river discharge. The relative effectiveness of the fish lift is discussed in relation to the various species.  相似文献

The impact of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus (L.)) on the trophic structure of eutrophic lakes was studied in Lake Ring, a small eutrophic Danish lake (22.5 ha, mean depth 2.9 m) in which the natural fish fauna is dominated by pike (Esox lucius L.), perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), and eel (Anguilla anguilla (L.)), roach (Rutilus rutilus (L.)) and burbot (Lota lota (L.)) being the only other fish species present. A total of 10993 0+ whitefish were stocked in the lake from October 1989 to July 1990 and the structure of the fish, zooplankton and benthic invertebrate communities studied during the period 1989–1991. Stomach contents analysis revealed that the whitefish mainly ate Daphnia and copepods in 1990–1991, the proportion of copepods decreasing with increasing size of the fish and Daphnia being the overall most important food source. The density of Daphnia in the lake decreased from 72 ind. 1-1 in 1989 to 9 ind. 1-1 in 1991; concomitantly the large species Daphnia magna and D. pulex almost disappeared and the density of cyclopoid copepods increased from 72 to 101 ind. 1-1, presumably because of improved food conditions, while that of calanoid copepods remained virtually unchanged. As a result chl-a increased from 19 to 47 µg 1-1 and Secchi depth decreased from 2.4 m to 1.7 m, despite there being no change in total P and total N (0.6 mg P 1-1 and 1.3 mg N 1-1, respectively). Changes were also observed in the benthic invertebrates; Chaoborus, oligochaetes, and chironomids all decreased, whereas Pisidium increased. It is concluded that the stocking of whitefish in eutrophic lakes for commercial purposes may delay their recovery, or even lead to enhanced eutrophication.  相似文献

To assess the effects of stocked pike (Esox lucius L.) on crucian carp (Carassius carassius L.) biomasses, the annual consumption of pike was estimated and compared with removal fishery catches. The studied lake, Lake Savijärvi, is a small (40 ha), shallow and eutrophicated lake in southern Finland with frequent algal blooms during summers and fish kills during winters. Until the 1980s, the fish fauna consisted of pike, perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), roach [Rutilus rutilus (L.)], crucian carp, and tench (Tinca tinca L.). Since 2003, when crucian carp were abundant in the extreme and with only a few roach and tench individuals, the lake has been biomanipulated by removal seining. To enhance the effects of seining, piscivorous pike were restocked in the spring of 2008. During the 3‐year study, the catch of crucian carp decreased from 243 to 136 kg while the catch of pike increased from 0.1 to 5.7 kg per seining hectare due to their spawning in the lake as of 2009. The total crucian carp consumption by captured pike was 588 kg during the 2008–2010 study period. When applying the number of pike estimated with the mark‐recapture method, consumption estimate increased to 917 kg, or 22.9 kg per lake hectare in 2010. Thus, pike consumption of crucian carp was about 17% of the removal catch in 2010.  相似文献

1. Large river floodplains are considered key nursery habitats for many species of riverine fish. The lower Volga River floodplains (Russian Federation) are still relatively undisturbed, serving as a suitable model for studying the influence of flooding and temperature on fish recruitment in floodplain rivers. 2. We examined the interannual variability in recruitment success of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) fish in the lower Volga floodplain in relation to flood pulse characteristics and rising water temperatures in the spring. We sampled four areas with different flooding regimes, in three consecutive years (2006–2008). 3. Extensive areas with a long duration of flooding accommodated high densities of young fish. This suggests that extended inundation improves the recruitment success of river fish. In areas with extensive flooding, the biomass of YOY of most fish species was about three times higher in 2006 and 2007 than in 2008. We hypothesise that low spring temperatures in 2008 may have caused this reduced recruitment and that a flood synchronised with rising temperature enhances recruitment success. 4. Extensive flooding was particularly favourable for species characterised by large body size, delayed maturation, high fecundity and low parental investment, such as pike Esox lucius, roach Rutilus rutilus and ide Leuciscus idus. Gibel carp Carassius gibelio, a species tolerant of high temperature and hypoxia, did particularly well in small waterbodies in the driest parts of the floodplain. 5. Structural characteristics of floodplain waterbodies explained much of YOY fish density. These species–environment associations varied from year to year, but some species such as common bream Abramis brama, roach and gibel carp showed consistent relationships with structural habitat characteristics in all years, despite large interannual fluctuations in flood pulse and spring temperature.  相似文献

Changes in the behaviour of cyprinids belonging to different ecology groups were observed below a weir that was restricting their upstream migrations during the spawning period May–July. Positions of chub Leuciscus cephalus (L.), Prussian carp Carrasius auratus gibelio (Bloch 1783), bream Abramis brama (L.) and white bream Blicca bjoerkna (L.) were recorded every 12 min over a 24‐h period using an automatic data logger (ALS) in the upper Elbe River, Czech Republic. For all observed species, two activity peaks occurred; however, the interspecies timing of these peaks differed. Peak times for chub, bream and white bream occurred at night and during daylight, whereas Prussian carp was active mostly at night. Specimens belonging to the rheophilous group suggested more efficient behavioural tactics in passing the weir, staying below the obstacle one month longer than did eurytopic species.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality level, metazoan parasites were examined in 157 specimens of chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.), sampled in four lowland water courses (northern Italy): Ticino river (unpolluted), Naviglio Pavese Canal (slightly polluted), Lambro river near the Merone village (polluted) and near Monza (severely polluted). Dactylogyrus vistulae, Paradiplozoon ergensi, Bucephalus polymorphus, Acanthocephalus anguillae and larval stages of Tylodelphys clavata were found in all the sampled sites. The distribution of Lamproglena pulchella and Pomphorhynchus laevis was limited to the unpolluted and slightly polluted river sectors, while Asymphylodora tincae, glochidia, along with larval stages of Diplostomum spathaceum, were absent in the severely polluted site. The variability of the calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity), the degree of interactivity among parasites, as well as parameters of species richness and diversity suggest that the structure of parasite communities are affected by the water contamination level.  相似文献

Iron-chlorosis deficiency may occur when an iron-inefficient genotype is grown on calcareous soil. One way to correct the problem is to modify the genotype by plant breeding. Cultivars have been released for oat (Avena byzantina C. Koch), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], dry bean (Phaseoulus vulgaris L.), and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Progress is being made in peanut (Arachis hypogea L.), forage species such as clovers (Trifolium sp.) and bluestems (Botriochloa sp.), and pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Summary The level of fruiting in four forest trees species (Picea sitchensis, P. abies, Pinus sylvestris and Fagus sylvatica) was monitored in Great Britain over the period 1989–1991. In addition, assessments of crown transparency were available for many of the trees for 1987 and 1988. The monitoring period encompassed severe summer droughts in 1989 and 1990, with wetter conditions in 1991. Variations in the level of fruiting in spruce and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were seen, with a marked peak in 1990. No pattern was apparent in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Coning, which was greater in trees with the least transparent crowns, had no discernible effect on the crown transparency of the conifers. Cupule production in beech was greatest in trees with the most transparent crowns, and trees with high numbers of cupules in 1990 tended to have greater crown dieback recorded in 1991.  相似文献

The diel rhythm of emergence from the gravel and displacement downstream has been studied in three salmonoid species: brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.), Atlantic salmon ( S. saiar L.) and grayling ( Thymallus thymallus L.). 1. The effect of improved water quality on fish assemblages in streams in southern Sweden was assessed by comparing species composition at 161 sites and water quality at twenty-nine sites in the 1960s and the 1990s. 2. Water quality had improved and there was an increase in the number of sites or catchments with brown trout (Salmo trutta), stone loach (Barbatula barbatula) and eel (Anguilla anguilla). The response was greatest for brown trout and was best explained by increased oxygen concentrations. 3. The number of sites with nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius), ide (Leuciscus idus) and brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) decreased between the 1960s and 1990s. The decrease was greatest for nine-spined stickleback and was related to the increase in sites with trout, suggesting that nine-spined stickleback may be sensitive to predation or competition. 4. Improved water quality has led to recolonization by brown trout, probably enabling biotic interactions to play a larger role in structuring fish assemblages. Improving water quality was an effective method for rehabilitating fish populations in streams where natural colonization was possible.  相似文献

Investigations of the erythrocyte count, haemoglobin content and M index of 7 fish species were performed under equivalent environmental conditions in the same period of the year. The species were: bighead Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (Richardson), carp Cyprinus carpio L., silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.), grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.), sheat-fish Silurus glanis L. , pike Esox Indus L., pike-perch Lucioperca lucioperca (L.). Bighead and carp are carnivorous and omnivorous, silver carp and grass carp are herbivorous and sheat-fish, pike and pike-perch are predatory. Significant differences were demonstrable between M values of fish living on different type of food, where the M index is: It is concluded that M index values are useful as one parameter differentiating between fish with distinctly different food habits.  相似文献

Airborne pollen and spore levels were monitored at seven sites in New Zealand using the Intermittent Cycling Rotorod sampler during the summer of 1988/1989. Grasses formed the major component of atmospheric pollen levels during spring and summer at every locality. Peak levels of grass and total pollen occurred during December or late November, with a slight latitudinal lag apparent at the more southern sites. Highest levels were recorded at the smaller rural centres of Gore and Kaikohe and the lowest at the larger urban centres of Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. We make a first approximation of the likely risk to hayfever and allergic asthma patients at each of the seven centres. For example, significantly higher grass pollen levels were experienced at Kaikohe on 44% and 65% of days during November and December, compared with just 15% and 8% at Auckland. By recording the flowering seasons of the principal allergenic grass species at each locality, we determined the potentially allergenic grasses contributing to peak pollen levels, the most ubiquitous being tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.,L. multiflorum Lam.), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus L.) and sweet vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum L.).
