CS mice, an inbred strain, showed two distinctive characteristics in the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity: (1) large variation in the freerunning period, and (2) spontaneous rhythm splitting under continuous darkness. In the splitting rhythm there was a positive correlation between the freerunning period of the evening component and the activity time of the morning component. The phase-shifting effect of a 15-min light pulse was examined on the two activity components of the splitting rhythm. There were significant differences in the amount of light-induced phase response between the two components. A light pulse during the late subjective night induced a phase advance shift only in the morning component, while a light pulse during the early subjective night induced a phase delay shift only in the evening component. These results indicate functional diversities of the two activity components in the circadian locomotor rhythm of CS mice, and suggest that the circadian system in CS mice consists of two mutually coupled oscillators which have different circadian periods and different responsiveness to light. The CS mouse is a useful model to explore a genetic background of oscillator coupling in the circadian system of nocturnal rodents. Accepted: 19 November 1998  相似文献

The lipids of the mesopelagic decapod Acanthephyra purpurea Milne Edwards have been studied in relation to its diurnal vertical migration. The total lipid content increased between midnight and early morning, and both the triglyceride and wax ester fractions showed considerable variation in amount. There was a significant increase in the phospholipid content during its period in deep water, suggesting a diurnal rhythm of lipid metabolism associated with the migratory rhythm.  相似文献

Glucocorticoid effects on the diurnal rhythm of circulating leptin levels   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
It is known that circulating leptin shows diurnal variation with a nocturnal rise; however, the mechanisms generating this rhythm have not been fully elucidated. Glucocorticoids are a potent stimulator of leptin secretion, and there is a reciprocal relationship between circulating leptin and glucocorticoid levels. We hypothesized that glucocorticoids could modulate the diurnal rhythm of circulating leptin. We therefore explored the diurnal variation of leptin under situations in which subjects showed no or some shift of glucocorticoid diurnal rhythm, such as prednisolone-administered humans, and adrenalectomized and corticosterone-replaced (ADX+B) rats. The peak level of plasma cortisol immunoreactivity was shifted from early morning to noon by prednisolone administration. The nocturnal increment of plasma leptin in prednisolone-administered patients (71.2 +/- 14.2% from 08:00 h value) was significantly greater than that in normal volunteers (12.2 +/- 7.5% from 08:00 h value), but the timing of nadir and the peak of plasma leptin was not shifted. In normal rats, the plasma concentration of leptin showed the diurnal rhythm with the bottom at 16:00 h and the top between midnight and early morning. The amplitude of leptin diurnal rhythm was significantly reduced in ADX+B rats (08:00 h: 3.0 +/- 0.2, 16:00 h: 2.7 +/- 0.2, 00:00 h; 3.7 +/- 0.2 ng/ml) compared with sham operated rats (08:00 h: 3.0 +/- 0.2, 16:00 h 2.2 +/- 0.2, 00:00 h: 4.7 +/- 0.4 ng/ml); but ADX+B rats still retained similar timing of nadir and the peak of plasma leptin as observed in sham rats. These results indicate that glucocorticoids enhance the amplitude of leptin diurnal rhythm, and are consistent with previous findings showing that glucocorticoids increase leptin secretion. Glucocorticoids appear to play modulatory, but not essential roles in generating leptin diurnal rhythm.  相似文献

A shift towards early morning biting behavior of the major malaria vector Anopheles funestus have been observed in two villages in south Benin following distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), but the impact of these changes on the personal protection efficacy of LLINs was not evaluated. Data from human and An. funestus behavioral surveys were used to measure the human exposure to An. funestus bites through previously described mathematical models. We estimated the personal protection efficacy provided by LLINs and the proportions of exposure to bite occurring indoors and/or in the early morning. Average personal protection provided by using of LLIN was high (≥80% of the total exposure to bite), but for LLIN users, a large part of remaining exposure occurred outdoors (45.1% in Tokoli-V and 68.7% in Lokohoué) and/or in the early morning (38.5% in Tokoli-V and 69.4% in Lokohoué). This study highlights the crucial role of LLIN use and the possible need to develop new vector control strategies targeting malaria vectors with outdoor and early morning biting behavior. This multidisciplinary approach that supplements entomology with social science and mathematical modeling illustrates just how important it is to assess where and when humans are actually exposed to malaria vectors before vector control program managers, policy-makers and funders conclude what entomological observations imply.  相似文献

The release rhythm of volatiles is an important physiological characteristic of plants, because the timing of release can affect the function of each particular volatile compound. However, most studies on volatiles release rhythms have been conducted using model plants, rather than crop plants. Here, we analyzed the variations in volatile compounds released from healthy and leafminer (Liriomyza huidobrensis)-infested kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), an important legume crop plant, over a 24 h period. The constituents of the volatiles mixture released from plants were analyzed every 3 h starting from 08:00. The collected volatiles were identified and quantified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Undamaged kidney bean plants released trace amounts of volatiles, with no obvious release rhythms. However, leafminer-damaged plants released large amounts of volatiles, in two main peaks. The main peak of emission was from 17:00 to 20:00, while the secondary peak was in the early morning. The terpene volatiles and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate showed similar rhythms as that of total volatiles. However, the green leaf volatile (Z)-3-hexen-ol was emitted during the night with peak emission in the early morning. These results give us a clear picture of the volatiles release rhythms of kidney bean plants damaged by leafminer. Keywords : green leaves volatiles, Liriomyza huidobrensis, rhythm, terpene, (Z)-3-hexen-ol  相似文献

Abstract 1 Egg loads from field collected pollen beetles (Meligethes aeneus Fab., Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) were determined by dissecting beetles caught at the beginning and end of the putative daily oviposition period. Field collected beetles were offered Brassica napus (L.) plants in cages for 8 (morning and early afternoon), 16 (overnight), and 24 h to ascertain the number of eggs laid during these time periods. 2 Most eggs were laid in the morning and early afternoon. The proportion of gravid females was higher at the beginning of the oviposition period than at the end. Most females in the morning carried two eggs, whereas one egg was more common in the afternoon. 3 We hypothesized that the number of eggs laid during the oviposition period would be equivalent to the difference between egg loads at the beginning and end of oviposition. This was not the case; differences in egg loads were significantly lower than number of eggs laid. However, the number of eggs laid was equivalent to the egg load at the beginning of the oviposition period, suggesting that eggs available in the morning are laid during the following day. 4 Population estimates of daily oviposition rates, approximately 0.7 eggs per beetle and day, were close to estimates from laboratory studies when the proportion of gravid females was taken into consideration.  相似文献

Summary The rhythm in melatonin production in the rat is driven by a circadian rhythm in the pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. Rats adapted to an artificial lighting regime of 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness per day were exposed to an 8-h advance of the light-dark regime accomplished by the shortening of one dark period; the effect of melatonin, triazolam and fluoxetine, together with 5-hydroxytryptophan, on the reentrainment of the NAT rhythm was studied. In control rats, the NAT rhythm was abolished during the first 3 cycles following the advance shift. It reappeared during the 4th cycle; however, the phase relationship between the evening rise in activity and the morning decline was still compressed.Melatonin accelerated the NAT rhythm reentrainment. In rats treated chronically with melatonin at the new dark onset, the rhythm had already reappeared during the 3rd cycle, in the middle of the advanced night, and during the 4th cycle, the phase relationship between the evening onset and the morning decline of the NAT activity was the same as before the advance shift. In rats treated chronically with melatonin at the old dark onset or in those treated with melatonin 8 h, 5 h and 2 h after the new dark onset during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle, respectively, following the advance shift, the NAT rhythm reappeared during the 3rd cycle as well but in the last third of the advanced night only.Neither triazolam nor fluoxetine together with 5-hydroxytryptophan administered around the new dark onset facilitated NAT rhythm reentrainment after the 8-h advance of the light-dark cycle.Abbreviations NAT N-acetyltransferase - LD cycle light-dark cycle - CT circadian time - LD xy light dark cycle comprising x h of light and y h of darkness  相似文献

Repeatable floral closure with diurnal rhythms, that is, flower opening in the morning and closing in the evening, was widely reported. However, the rhythm of flower opening in the morning but closing in the midday received much less attention. Gentianopsis paludosa, Gentianaceae, has an obvious petal movement rhythm opening in the morning and closing at noon at northeast of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we examined the effects of temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and illumination intensity (II) on G. paludosa''s flower closure. Furthermore, we monitored the environmental changes inside and outside of the flowers, aiming to test the effect of floral closure on the stability of microenvironment inside the flower. Finally, we artificially interrupted temporal petal closure and investigated its effects on reproductive fitness. The results showed that high/low temperature contributed more to the flower closure than low RH, while illumination intensity had no significant effect on it. The medium temperature, relative humidity and illumination intensity (environmental conditions at 10:00) did not delay flower closure when flowers at pre‐closing period or stimulate reopen when flowers full closed. Floral closure provided a stable temperature condition and a higher RH condition inside the flower. Meanwhile, compulsive opening and delayed closure of flowers decreased the seed‐set ratio while no effect was found when flowers were forced to close. We conclude that endogenous rhythm regulates floral closure. The rhythm of petal movement providing a stable microenvironment for G. paludosa, increasing the seed production and saving energy from flower opening maintenance, which might be an adaptive strategy to against unfavorable environmental conditions.  相似文献

Broadcast spawning corals release gametes into the oceans with extraordinarily accurate timing. While the date of spawning is set by the lunar cycle, the hour/minute of spawning is set by the solar cycle. In this report, we describe experiments that test whether the time of spawning is regulated by an entrained biological clock or whether it is directly controlled by the solar cycle. Montastraea franksi samples were collected on the morning of the predicted spawning. Fragments from colonies were kept under three different lighting conditions and spawning monitored. The three conditions were sunset times of 0, 1 or 2 h earlier than normal. Fragments from the same colony spawned differently under these three conditions, with an early sunset causing a corresponding early shift in spawning. These results indicate that spawn timing is not controlled by a circadian rhythm and that it is directly controlled by local solar light cycle.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the diurnal variation in core temperature in aluminium shift-workers exposed to hot ambient conditions. Core temperature was continuously recorded via an ingestible radio-telemetry thermistor in 29 shift-workers. Data from the morning, afternoon and night shifts were aggregated for each participant to obtain 24-h recordings during work duties. Complete data were obtained from 10 participants. Results showed that body core temperatures recorded in the afternoon (from 12:00 h to 20:00 h) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than in the late evening, night and early morning (from 21:00 h to 08:00 h). In addition, core temperature displayed a circadian variation with a mesor of 37.45 (±0.19) °C, an amplitude of 0.23 (±0.12) °C and an acrophase at 16:36 h (±3:37 h). The peak values of core temperature recorded at each hour of the day on the work site followed the same pattern with an acrophase in the early afternoon. In summary, our data showed that shift-workers present higher core temperatures in the afternoon than in the morning or during the night. In addition, it was not the work duration but the hour-of-day that triggered the variation in core temperature. This result partly explains previous observations that workers under heat stress have a higher probability of heat illness during daytime shifts than during the night shift, and suggests that special care should be given to the afternoon shift and to the end of the morning shift.  相似文献

The amplitude and phasing of circadian rhythms are under discussion as possible predictors of tolerance to night work. In a field study, subjective sleepiness and oral temperature of 147 female nurses were measured at 2-hour intervals during a period with one morning shift and two consecutive night shifts. The nurses also filled out a questionnaire. Two types of tolerance indices were constructed: The “health index” was based on questions referring to general fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and sleep disturbances, and the “sleepiness index” on the actual subjective ratings of sleepiness. According to the health index, the group with good tolerance had a larger circadian amplitude of the oral temperature rhythm on the day of the morning shift than the group with poor tolerance. However, with regard to the sleepiness index, the corresponding difference between the groups with good or poor tolerance was not significant. The data did not confirm the hypothesis that predicts a quick adjustment of the circadian rhythm when the circadian amplitude is small before the change to night work. The contradictory results found in this and in other studies do not yet permit prediction of tolerance to night work.  相似文献

The authors derived early and late populations of fruit flies showing increased incidence of emergence during morning or evening hours by imposing selection for timing of emergence under 12:12 h light/dark (LD) cycles. From previous studies, it was clear that the increased incidence of adult emergence during morning and evening hours in early and late populations was a result of evolution of divergent and characteristic emergence waveforms in these populations. Such characteristic waveforms are henceforth referred to as "evolved emergence waveforms" (EEWs). The early and late populations also evolved different circadian clocks, which is evident from the divergence in their clock period (τ) and photic phase response curve (PRC). Although correlation between emergence waveforms and clock properties suggests functional significance of circadian clocks, τ and PRCs do not satisfactorily explain the early and late emergence phenotypes. In order to understand the functional significance of the PRC for early and late emergence phenotypes, the authors investigated whether circadian clocks of these flies exhibit any difference in photosensitivity under entrained conditions. Such differences would suggest that the light requirement for circadian entrainment of the emergence rhythm in early and late populations is different. To test this, they examined if early and late flies differ in their light utilization behavior, first by assaying their emergence rhythm under complete photoperiod and then in three different skeleton photoperiods. The results showed that early and late populations require different durations of light during the morning and evening to achieve their EEWs, suggesting that for the circadian entrainment of the emergence rhythm, early and late flies utilize light from different parts of the day.  相似文献

The relationship of hunger (as measured by food consumption) to predatory behaviour in two species of falconiform birds was investigated in the laboratory. The tendency to kill prey was correlated with hunger, and only hungry birds killed prey. I suggest that there is no predatory instinct or drive which operates independently of hunger and offer other rationales for the occasional excessive killing by some vertebrate predators. Falco sparverius exhibited a circadian rhythm of hunger and killing by some vertebrate predators. Falco sparverius exhibited a circadian rhythm of hunger and killing tendency, with a peak in the late afternoon. Buteo platypterus possibly showed a slight peak in the morning.  相似文献

In the Karakum Desert (Turkmenistan) the beetles Trigonoscelis gigas are only active in the morning and evening while T. sublaevicollis are strictly nocturnal, regardless of the season and weather. The daily activity rhythm of T. gigas and T. sublaevicollis was studied in the laboratory according to the following pattern: 5 days under a light-darkness cycle of 15: 9 h (LD 15: 9), then 10 days in constant darkness (DD), and then 10 more days under alternating 1-h pulses of light and darkness (LD 1: 1). The temperature was 25°C in all the modes. At LD 15: 9, beetles of both species maintained a 24-h period and a natural pattern of the activity rhythm. In DD, the circadian rhythm ran with a period of 23.5 ± 0.3 h (n = 40) in T. gigas and 23.6 ± 0.4 h (n = 40) in T. sublaevicollis. At DD, the morning and evening activity peaks of T. gigas merged to form a rhythm with only one peak. Under LD 1: 1, both T. gigas and T. sublaevicollis recovered a 24-h period of the rhythm, while the rhythm of T. gigas regained the two-peak structure. Our research confirmed the assumption of Tshernyshev (1980) about the 24-h period of the free-running endogenous rhythm and the distorting effect of constant conditions on this rhythm.  相似文献

The effects of mating time and of LD cycles on the timing of birth and length of gestation were examined in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). Hamsters maintained on 14L:10D cycles were mated for 2 h either in the evening or in the morning, and groups of hamsters mated in the morning were subjected to either a 6-h advance shift or a 6-h delay shift of the LD cycle on Days 5-14 of gestation. For the last 2 days of gestation the hamsters were kept in constant dim light and observed every hour to determine the time of birth. Hamsters mated in the evening gave birth an average of 4.8 h before those mated in the morning, and the hamsters subjected to an advance shift gave birth an average of 8.1 h before those subjected to delay shift. The results show that 80-100% of births occur during the subjective day on Day 16 of gestation and that the minimum duration of gestation is 15 days and 2 h. The regulation of birth appears to involve two processes, an interval timer related to the time of conception and a circadian rhythm that is governed by the LD cycle.  相似文献

Summary During the 1977 and 1979 reproductive periods of the Galápagos fur seals a census taken in the mornings and evenings at Cabo Hammond, Fernandina, showed a marked, synodic lunar rhythm in numbers of animals ashore. About twice as many fur seals were ashore at full moon than at new moon. By use of two independent Fourier analysis methods, the curve of the morning counts is shown to lag 15°–20° of the lunar month behind the curve of the evening counts. The lunar effect is demonstrated for males, females, and immatures. The rhythm is also seen is demonstrated for males, females, and immatures. The rhythm is also seen in attendance data from 13 individually marked females, all but one nursing young. Reproductive events show the lunar rhythm much less markedly than do numbers ashore. This and the clear rhythm in immature numbers make it very likely that the rhythm is a year-round phenomenon, independent of reproduction. There is no reason to assume that fur seals stay on land during moonlit nights especially for social interaction. It is then hypothesized that fur seals avoid moonlight at sea. If so, the peak of numbers ashore at full moon and the negative phase angle difference of the evening curve against the morning curve can be explained with the shift, and the varying duration and brightness, of the moonlit part of the night over the lunar cycle. Two hypotheses which might account for this moonlight avoidance are discussed: (1) predator (shark) avoidance and (2) varying feeding efficiency of the fur seals due to the influence of moonlight on the vertical distribution of prey.  相似文献

The current study investigated the accident rates across morning, late, and night shifts in rotating shift-workers employed in two different shift rotations at the same steel work factory. A retrospective analysis has been performed of accident data (N = 578) over a 5-year period (2003 through 2007) of 730 male shift-workers employed in either a clockwise (mean age of the workers 38.1 ± SD 9.8 years) or counterclockwise rotation (mean age 38.0 ± SD 10.1 years) with comparable work conditions. The overall accident rate across the 24-h day was not significantly different between clockwise and counterclockwise shift rotation. In both shift-work rotations, morning shifts as opposed to night shifts exhibited a significantly higher accident rate. There was no significant difference between late shifts and morning or night shifts in either shift rotation. The increased accident rate in the morning shift at this steel factory could be related to the early starting time of the shift and to this shift being more labor intensive in both shift rotations. These findings suggest that work-related factors must be considered in addition to shift-work schedules when investigating accident rates in rotating shift-workers.  相似文献

Relationships between benthos, drift, feeding rhythm and consumption rate of brown trout were investigated in an artificial stream in late spring. There are good correlations between insects activities and feeding rhythm of the trout. There are two feeding periods, the first one, more important, occurs at dusk and the second one in early morning. Daily ration is 6% of trout dry weight.  相似文献
