Studies on the live-bearing scorpaenid genus Sebastes have recently shown that embryos of one species receive nutrition in addition to that supplied in the yolk. In this large genus, however, reproductive characteristics may differ among species. Energetics of embryonic development in kurosoi, Sebastes schlegeli Hilgendorf, were analyzed to determine the patterns of embryonic nutrition. The egg of this species is larger and contains over three times the energy content of that in S. melanops, another species which has been studied. Catabolism during the 51 days of embryonic development required 88% of the original energy in the egg, but the embryo at birth contained 93% of the initial egg energy. Thus the total energy required for development from fertilization to birth requires ≈1.8 times the initial, endogenous energy supply. Histological studies demonstrate that uptake occurs through ingestion and absorption of ovarian fluid in the hindgut. Protein and nitrogen budgets during development suggest that the primary substance taken up is nitrogenous.No distinct structures are apparent in the ovarian system to supply nutrients to the developing embryos. Analysis of fecundity-at-length, however, shows that post-fertilization fecundity estimates are significantly lower than pre-fertilization values; the reduction apparently occurs through resorption of ova or early embryos. Along with catabolism, this results in an overall decrease in the energy content of the ovaries during development, but the total amounts of protein and nitrogen remain nearly static. We thus suggest that resorption of unfertilized ova or early embryos which die may enrich the ovarian fluid and supply energy to the surviving embryos. This is a primitive form of embryonic nutrition in viviparous species and may be common in the genus Sebastes.  相似文献

1. We used published data to investigate the combined influence of egg size and incubation temperature on embryonic development time for a broad assortment of aquatic insects at four different incubation temperatures (10, 15, 20 and 25 °C).
2. Embryonic development time (EDT) was positively correlated with egg size at each of the four temperatures, but with different relationships for univoltine and multivoltine aquatic insects. The relationships of embryonic development time to egg size expressed in degree-days did not significantly differ in slope ( P >0.50) or intercept ( P >0.05) for either univoltine or multivoltine aquatic insects at each of the four temperatures.
3. The relationship of embryonic development time (degree-days) to egg mass in multivoltine aquatic insects (EDT=885×0.19, P <0.0001, r 2=0.48) is similar in slope and intercept to that for other oviparous animals (i.e., zooplankton, fish, amphibians and reptiles), and to the relationship of embryonic development time to neonate mass in mammals. Univoltine species on average require 3–5 times longer to develop (EDT=14190×0.29, P <0.001, r 2=0.29) than most other animals of equivalent egg mass, but the relationship of embryonic development time to egg mass is similar in slope to that of most other animals. Together, these relationships provide a basis for evaluating differences in embryonic development time among aquatic insects.  相似文献

The embryonic development of the thecosome Desmopterus papilio is described for the first time. The mature individual produced a round-shaped egg mass containing ca. 200 fertilised eggs. First cleavage was observed 15 min after the release of the egg mass. Embryos showed typical molluscan spiral cleavage: macromeres produced the first and second quartets of micromeres in clockwise and counterclockwise directions, respectively. A trochophore larva hatched from the egg capsule 28 h after the release of the egg mass. Thereafter, the larva secreted a primary shell at the posterior part, developing into the veliger stage. These findings may be useful for future work on postembryonic development, especially on the loss of the veliger shell, in the genus Desmopterus which is the only group of thecosome species without a shell in the adult stage.  相似文献

The predaceous bug,Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) is a biological control agent used in greenhouses in the French Mediterranean region. The egg of this mirid is embedded in plant tissues and all embryonic development occurs in this environment. In order to define an artificial substrate for egg-laying, exchanges of chemical substances between the egg and the host plant were investigated by morphological and biochemical analyses. Egg wet weight doubled throughout embryonic development, while egg dry weight did not vary. The amino acid content of the egg remained stable during embryogenesis. Only aspartic acid, serine and alanine decreased during the first five days of development. It can be concluded that exchanges mainly involved uptake of water by the egg.  相似文献

The egg structure and outline of the embryonic development of Metallyticus splendidus of one of the basal Mantodea representatives, Metallyticidae, were described in the present study. The results obtained were compared with those from the previous studies, to reconstruct and discuss the groundplan of Mantodea and Dictyoptera. In M. splendidus, the egg is spheroidal, it has a convex ventral side at the center in which numerous micropyles are grouped, and it possesses a conspicuous hatching line in its anterior half. These are the groundplan features of mantodean eggs and the “grouped micropyles in the ventral side of the egg” are regarded as an apomorphic groundplan feature of Dictyoptera. A small circular embryo is formed by a simple concentration of blastoderm cells, which then undergoes embryogenesis of the typical short germ band type. Blastokinesis is of the “non-reversion type” and the embryo keeps its original superficial position and original orientation throughout embryonic development. During the middle stages of development, the embryo undergoes rotation around the egg's anteroposterior axis. These features are a part of the groundplan of Mantodea. It is uncertain whether sharing of the “non-reversion type” of blastokinesis by Mantodea and blaberoidean Blattodea can be regarded as homology or homoplasy.  相似文献

As important pollination species, honeybees play substantial impacts on the balance of global ecosystem, including two best-known honeybees Apis mellifera and Apis cerana. Embryogenesis is a fundamental stage of honeybee development and plays important roles in supporting the whole-life developmental process. However, few studies were reported on honeybee embryonic morphology using egg section, possibly due to the fragility of honeybee eggs and the difficulty of making embryonic sections. In this study, we reported a simply equipped method of frozen sectioning and PI (propidium iodide) staining to show the inner structure and cell distribution of A. cerena embryos at the different embryonic developmental stages. We found that the stages of A. cerena embryogenesis could also be typically classified into ten developmental stages, which are similar with the sister honeybee species, A. mellifera. To be noted, besides the cell distribution in the whole egg, we clearly observed the migration route of embryonic cells during the early embryonic development in A. cerena. This study provides a new insight into the whole process of honeybee embryogenesis from the perspective of egg sectioning, a histological basis for genetic manipulation using A. cerena eggs, and a reference method for egg sectioning for other insect species.  相似文献

Algae colonize the gelatinous egg masses of marine invertebrates. This study demonstrates a symbiotic relationship between marine algae and the invertebrate embryos in gelatinous egg masses found in Indian River Lagoon, FL, USA. The benefits to the embryos in this association differ among host species investigated. The embryos of the polychaete Axiothella mucosa graze on the diatom assemblage in their egg masses and the fitness of the crawl-away juveniles is improved by this food source. The tenuous egg masses of the polychaete Arenicola cristata and the mollusk Haminoea succinea are negatively buoyant when spawned and become buoyant when symbiotic algae are present. In addition to increased dispersal of their lecithotrophic larvae, the potential of the egg masses of A. cristata and H. succinea to float may reduce predation on the embryos by benthic predators such as the gastropod Nassarius vibex. Photosynthetically derived oxygen from the algae may benefit the embryos of the opisthobranch Haminoea elegans by increasing oxygen supply when crawl-away juveniles emerge from the egg mass. However, when mostly earlier stage larvae are hatched from egg masses of H. elegans, the additional oxygen supplied by the algae does not provide a substantial advantage. Algae were absent in the gelatinous egg mass core of only one of the five species examined, Haminoea antillarum. H. antillarum has both a short embryonic development time and denser egg mass gel than the other four species tested. What is not understood is whether invertebrate egg masses are an opportunistic space for algae to colonize or whether only a few microalgal species can exploit the gelatinous substrate.  相似文献

Eggs of Locusta migratoria contain remarkably high concentrations of ecdysone and several other ecdysteroids. During the time-span of embryonic development (11 days) 4 distinct peaks of ecdysone concentration (up to 8 μM) are observed in the egg, demonstrating the ecdysiosynthetic capacity of the embryo. Only during postblastokinetic development, is ecdysone efficiently hydroxylated to 20-hydroxyachieved through conjugation. On the basis of optical and electron microscopic observations, we have been able to correlate precisely each of the four peaks of ecdysone concentration in the egg with the time of deposition of a cuticle by the embryonic tissues (peak 1: serosal cuticle; peak 2: first embryonic cuticle; peak 3: second embryonic cuticle; peak 4: third embryonic cuticle).  相似文献

The intrauterine eggs of the pleurogenid trematode Brandesia turgida (Brandes, 1888), exhibiting advanced stages of miracidial differentiation and fully formed, ciliated miracidia, were examined by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Each embryonated egg is composed of a mature miracidium surrounded by a four-layered egg wall: (1) an outer, anucleate layer external to the eggshell, which forms a thick cocoon; (2) the operculate egg-shell; (3) a small remnant of the compact, granular cytoplasm of the outer embryonic envelope (sensu stricto); and (4) a relatively distinct cellular remnant of the inner embryonic envelope. Layers enveloping the egg apparently play an important role in the protection, metabolism and storage of nutritive reserves for the developing miracidium. The outer, anucleate layer, or cocoon, situated externally to the eggshell and composed of a transparent, electron-lucent substance with numerous dense, osmiophilic islands attached to its peripheral membrane, has never previously been seen in TEM studies of the eggs of parasitic platyhelminths. The origin, formation, functional ultrastructure and chemical composition of this peculiar layer remain enigmatic, although its function appears to be protective. The thick, electron-dense eggshell resembles that of other trematodes, exhibiting a characteristic fissure zone around the operculum. The very small, indistinct remnants of the outer embryonic envelope appear in the form of a very thin, compact, granular cytoplasm closely attached to the inner surface of the eggshell. Conversely, the inner embryonic envelope is frequently apparent at one or both poles of the developed egg as a syncytial envelope formed by the fusion of mesomeres. This envelope, even in eggs containing a fully formed miracidium, still has the features of a metabolically active layer with an energy storage capability. 采用扫描电镜和光学解剖镜,对黑龙江水域怀头鲇(Silirus soldatovi)成熟卵膜层次构造和受精卵胚胎发育过程中卵膜形态结构变化进行观察,并比较未脱黏和人工脱黏卵受精卵膜的表面超微结构变化.结果显示,受精卵膜的胶膜表面由一层薄而致密的物质组成,上有微孔构造.未脱黏受精卵膜表面胶膜光滑致密,多孔隙,内有小梁相连,随胚胎发育逐渐膨胀、展开、变薄,破膜期自然脱落.人工脱黏几乎全部脱去鱼卵的胶膜层,从而使卵失去黏性.脱去胶膜层的受精卵膜表面由不规则的颗粒状结构紧密嵌合而成,表面粗糙,胚胎发育过程中颗粒形状变化不大,但颗粒层逐渐变薄而且疏松,直至胚胎破膜而出:胚胎发育后期颗粒层有过早脱落和破洞出现.同时对活体鱼卵进行连续比较观察,讨论了卵膜结构及动态变化与孵化效果的关系.  相似文献

Eggs produced by homozygous mutant rudimentary (r9, 154.5) females of Drosophila melanogaster die during embryogenesis, apparently because the mutant female fails to incorporate certain substances into the egg during oogenesis. These eggs can be rescued by injecting them at the preblastoderm stage with wild-type nuclei and cytoplasm or wild-type cytoplasm alone from unfertilized eggs. Some preblastoderm eggs injected with 1.5% of egg volume of cytoplasm from unfertilized wild-type eggs were able to complete both embryonic and postembryonic development and emerged as adults, whereas not a single uninjected control egg was able to complete embryonic development. The eggs of rudimentary mothers can also be rescued by injecting each egg at the blastoderm stage with 0.01 μg of pyrimidine nucleosides. The results demonstrate that a pyrimidine deficiency is the cause of abortive embryogenesis, and confirm the previous finding that the rudimentary mutation leads to pyrimidine auxotrophy.  相似文献

利用稻田蜘蛛优势种拟环纹豹蛛为研究对象,检测Cry1Ab蛋白在拟环纹豹蛛卵囊内的含量及Cry1Ab蛋白对拟环纹豹蛛胚胎发育过程中形态特征的变化、化学物质含量和卵粒内4种保护酶活性的影响。结果表明:在胚胎发育过程中,卵粒中Cry1Ab蛋白含量随发育时间延长而减少,通过对卵粒中的化学物质的测定,发现蛋白质含量水平对照组要显著高于实验组(P〈0.05),糖和脂肪含量对照组和实验组之间无显著差异。卵粒内超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、乙酰胆碱酯酶(AchE)、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GSH-Px)和过氧化氢酶(CAT)4种酶活力除了GSH-Px酶活力实验组高于对照组外,其余3种酶活力均低于对照组。通过石蜡切片和液体石蜡透明观察,实验组较对照组胚胎发育历期延长。该研究证明在胚胎发育时期Cry1Ab蛋白影响了卵粒内SOD、AchE、GSH-Px和CAT酶的活力,且Cry1Ab蛋白对拟环纹豹蛛的胚胎发育产生了一定程度的影响。  相似文献

Although larvae of the Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica, live for more than 2 years, the adult and embryonic stages are brief and are less well known than the larvae. In this report, we provide additional details of these understudied life stages with laboratory observation on adult emergence, longevity, preoviposition period and embryonic development. Male adults emerged slightly earlier than females, and they also lived longer. More than a half (57 %) of the adults that emerged in the laboratory were males. Females produced only a single egg mass and died within a day after oviposition. Embryonic development required 16 days at 4 °C, and prior to hatching, the pharate larvae perform a distinct sequence of behaviors that include drinking and peristaltic movement. We also discuss points that need to be resolved for laboratory propagation of this species.  相似文献

The recent discovery that the unicellular green alga Oophila amblystomatis, invades embryonic tissues and cells of the salamander Ambystoma maculatum prompted us to investigate the growth and life history transformations of the algal symbionts in egg capsules. During embryonic development, symbionts were first detected microscopically as a cohesive population of swimming cells in the vicinity of the blastopore around embryonic stage 17. This population of cells grew and at embryonic stage 25, a fraction of the population began to affix to the inside of the egg capsule. Cells then underwent syngamy, lost flagella, and transformed into non-motile cells. We observed a linear increase in the accumulation of such capsule-associated cells from embryonic stage 25 to 40. The population of zoospores did not grow over this period and showed a declining trend between stage 39 and 40. We verified the population growth by measuring relative chlorophyll a content and also measured quantum yield (QY) of photosystem II (PS II) using pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry. The population, but not the cell size, of non-motile capsule membrane-bound cells increased modestly during a one-month period after hatching, and continued to contain high levels of chlorophyll a and photosynthetic capacity. We conclude that O. amblystomatis undergoes a life history transition in egg capsules and speculate that many of these symbionts become zygotes, rather than invading the embryo.  相似文献

The egg of the leafhopper Euscelis plebejus has been separated into three fragments [for nomenclature, see Sander, K. (1976). Advan. Insect Physiol.12, 125–238] by two constrictions in order to exclude the middle egg part from possible terminal influences on pattern specification. Middle fragments of freshly laid eggs (two pronuclei or one nucleus) differentiate middle segments of the embryonic pattern. The segment composition of those partial patterns varies with the position of the two constrictions. Eggs subdivided at later stages of development produce similar partial patterns in the middle fragment, but with more segments. The mode of segment expression in single and double fragmented eggs is compatible with the assumption that the metameric pattern is differentiated by a sequence of short-range inductions rather than by an extensive gradient field.  相似文献

The harvested eggs of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus are ovo-cylindrical shaped, averaged 1.09 mm in length and 0.43 mm in width, with ratio of L\W 4.42. The chorionic layer of electron dense material is seen covering the exochorion structure of the eggs. The egg main body chorion exhibits a polygonal pattern and architecture surface of the egg is supported by a system of irregular interconnecting grooves. The micropylar apparatus of the eggs of the Red Palm Weevil, R. ferrugineus is described in the present study for the first time. Two micropylar openings are found closed to the center of the posterior wide pole of the egg. Each micropylar opening presents a single small orifice and its surrounding chorion is porous and densely set with tiny projections allowing the spermatozoa to penetrate the egg. Respiratory aeropyles are distributed on the borders of reticulations in the area chorionic surface of egg capsule. The hatching region is detected on the anterior part at the opposite side of the egg. Changes in the appearance and shape of R. ferrugineus eggs as well as the incidence of embryonic development are observed.  相似文献
