In order to investigate the stages of oogenesis in the albacore Thunnus alalunga, 129 females (64.0?83.5 cm fork length‐FL) were captured by gill nets from April to August 2002–2008, in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Based on histological examination of the ovaries, a total of seven ovarian developmental stages were identified: perinucleolar, lipid, early vitellogenesis, late vitellogenesis, migratory nucleus, pre‐hydrated and hydrated. The monthly gonadosomatic index values and the results of the histological analysis indicated that the females mature in May. The spawning stage becomes predominant in June and reaches a maximum in July. The evidence reported here indicates that the size of females at first sexual maturity was lower for the Mediterranean albacore stock than for the Pacific and Atlantic stocks.  相似文献

The ability to accurately estimate the age of fishes is critical for conducting stock assessments and developing fishery management policies. Scales were collected from albacore, Thunnus alalunga, caught in the Mediterranean Sea during the years 1989–1995 to estimate their age and growth. Ages, which ranged from 1+ to 6+ years, were estimated from the interpretation of the concentric rings on the scales of 473 individuals that ranged in fork length from 55.5 to 89 cm. Males reached a greater size and age than females. The relatively close agreement in the mean lengths at ages estimated by scales and other techniques constituted a preliminary verification of the method. The von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted to mean lengths at estimated ages, resulting in the following growth parameters for the combined sexes: L = 86 cm, K = 0.4, to = ?0.8 years. Parameter estimates were in agreement with what is known about life history of the species in the Mediterranean. Moreover, the growth rates were consistent with length increment observations from five tag returns, which lend support to our working hypothesis that the scale‐rings are annual structures. When the Mediterranean albacore growth parameters were compared with those of Atlantic Ocean albacore using scale age estimates, there were significant differences between the two populations, and Mediterranean albacore remain significantly smaller than Atlantic Ocean albacore.  相似文献

The age and growth of North Pacific albacore Thunnus alalunga were investigated using obliquely sectioned sagittal otoliths from samples of 126 females and 148 males. Otolith edge analysis indicated that the identified annulus in a sagittal otolith is primarily formed during the period from September to February. The assessments of the fish age at first annulus formation indicated that the first annulus represents an age of <1 year. This study presents an age estimate (0·75 years) for the formation of the first annulus. The oldest fish ages observed in this study were 10 years for females and 14 years for males. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of females estimated were L(∞) = 103·5 cm in fork length (L(F) ), K = 0·340 year(-1) and t(0) = -0·53 years, and the parameters of males were L(∞) = 114·0 cm, K = 0·253 year(-1) and t(0) = -1·01 years. Sexual size dimorphism between males and females seemed to occur after reaching sexual maturity. The coefficients of the power function for expressing the L(F) -mass relationship obtained from sex-pooled data were a = 2·964 × 10(-5) and b = 2·928.  相似文献

Partitioning of protease from stomach of albacore tuna using an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) was investigated. The best ATPS conditions for protease partitioning from stomach extract (SE) and acidified counterpart (ASE) were 25% PEG1000–20% MgSO4 and 15% PEG2000–15% MgSO4, which increased the purity by 7.2-fold and 2.4-fold with the recovered activity of 85.7% and 89.1%, respectively. Electrophoretic study revealed that SE had a major protein with a molecular weight (MW) of 40.6 kDa, while protein with MW of 32.7 kDa was predominant in ASE and ATPS fractions. Pepsinogen in SE might be activated to pepsin by acidification and partitioning process. SE was quite stable at 0 and 4 °C up to 14 days. The loss in protease activity in ASE and selected ATPS fractions was more pronounced when storage time and temperature increased. Therefore, ATPS can be effectively used to recover and purify protease from albacore tuna stomach.  相似文献

Observations on haematological characteristics of albacore, Thunnus alalunga , and skipjack Katsuwonus pelamis , tunas, were made on blood samples collected from specimens immediately after they were caught and from an immobilized, restrained albacore sampled serially over a 24 h period. Results indicated eight types of blood cells in the peripheral circulation of both species. Lymphocytes were the most common leucocyte followed, in decreasing order, by neutrophils, eosinophils and monocytes in fish sampled immediately after being landed. Variations in differential and total white blood cell counts were observed in the immobilized, restrained albacore. High packed cell volumes and haemoglobin concentrations, typical for fast swimming fishes, were found in both species. Red blood cell counts were similar to those of other teleosts, and reticulocytes expressed as a percentage of mature erythrocytes were 6.1% and 5.2% for albacore and skipjack, respectively.  相似文献

The stomachs of 56 albacore (Thunnus alalunga) caught in thesouthern Adriatic Sea contained 222 cephalopods, or 29% of prey.Most cephalopod remains were from small specimens. Juvenilesand adults of Heteroteuthis dispar (61.5% of cephalopods) were morefrequently preyed upon in the `inshore' fishing area (bottomdepth: 100-700 m); early juveniles of Todarodes sagittatus (21.6%)were more abundant ` offshore' (750- 1,150 m); early juvenilesof Histioteuthis bonnellii (16.4%) were exclusive of the latterarea. Spatial variation in growth is a common feature of demersal fish populations which often exist as discrete adult sub-populations linked by a pelagic larval stage. However, it remains unclear whether variation in growth occurs at similar spatial scales for populations of highly migratory pelagic species, such as tuna. We examined spatial variation in growth of albacore Thunnus alalunga across 90° of longitude in the South Pacific Ocean from the east coast of Australia to the Pitcairn Islands. Using length-at-age data from a validated ageing method we found evidence for significant variation in length-at-age and growth parameters (L(∞) and k) between sexes and across longitudes. Growth trajectories were similar between sexes up until four years of age, after which the length-at-age for males was, on average, greater than that for females. Males reached an average maximum size more than 8 cm larger than females. Length-at-age and growth parameters were consistently greater at more easterly longitudes than at westerly longitudes for both females and males. Our results provide strong evidence that finer spatial structure exists within the South Pacific albacore stock and raises the question of whether the scale of their "highly migratory" nature should be re-assessed. Future stock assessment models for South Pacific albacore should consider sex-specific growth curves and spatial variation in growth within the stock.  相似文献

The ovaries of 501 female eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus Linnaeus, 1758) captured in the Mediterranean Sea from May to September between 1998 and 2004 were analysed histologically. Body size at median sexual maturity (L50) was 103.6 cm fork length (FL), while 100% maturity was reached above 135 cm FL. The age analysis, based on the count of the translucent zones of the first spiniform ray of the first dorsal fin, showed that most of the specimens with FL = L50 were 3 years old while 100% maturity was reached between 4 to 5 years. The reported evidence indicates that for the eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna stock, the size and age of first sexual maturity of females was lower than in the western Atlantic stock.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to look into possible relationships between climate and the inter‐annual variability of albacore (Thunnus alalunga) catch rates by age class observed during a recreational fishery tournament at the spawning grounds of S’Estanyol (Balearic Islands, Spain) in the years 2004–2009. The mean capture per unit effort (CPUE) was significantly higher when the mean of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) experienced by the albacore in winter and spring of its life history (NAOlife) was negative than when the NAOlife was positive. A statistically significant negative relationship was obtained between NAOlife and the probability of a CPUE value for an age class and year being higher than the average CPUE for all the cohorts in that age class. The results suggest that local abundance of albacore in a spawning grounds could be related to environmental factors dependent on the NAO and that there may be a cohort‐age effect. It is hypothesized that factors dependent on the NAO, such as the abundance variation of small pelagic fishes as a response to the NAO variability, could have a cumulative effect over the good biological condition (fitness) of a long‐living fish predator such as the albacore.  相似文献

This study gives relevant information on the diet composition of the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) during the spawning period in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The stomach contents of 218 bluefin tuna were sampled from 2003 to 2006 during the fishing season (May–June) aboard purse seiners operating in the northern Levantine Sea off the coast of Turkey. Stomachs were removed from the fish soon after landing and kept frozen at ?18°C until analysis. Prey items were classified into large taxonomic categories and preserved in 70% ethanol. A total of 745 different prey specimens belonging to 47 taxa were identified, including 34 species of fish, 11 of squid, and two of crustaceans. The most important fish and cephalopod prey belonged to the families Myctophidae, Carangidae, Chauliodontidae, Paralepididae, and Octopoda. This study marks the observation of myctophid fish in the stomach contents of bluefin tuna from the Mediterranean Sea. The paper offers some new information of regional importance and compares the feeding habits of the species to other regions, bringing confirmation on the opportunistic feeding ecology of the species in the enclosed Mediterranean Sea, where bluefin tuna seasonally occur as a strong cohort. New information on the diet composition of T. thynnus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea is revealed; the findings indicate that, depending on the abundance of the different prey species in the habitat, the dominant prey species can be distinctive.  相似文献

Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) has a distinctly complex life history in which juveniles and adults separate geographically but at times inhabit the same spaces sequentially. The species also migrates long distances and presumably experiences varied regimes of physical stress over a lifetime. There are, therefore, many opportunities for population structure to arise based on stochastic differences or environmental factors that promote local adaptation. However, with the extent of mobility consistently demonstrated by tagged individuals, there is also a strong argument for panmixia within an ocean basin. It is important to confirm such assumptions from a population genetics standpoint for this species in particular because albacore is one of the principal market tuna species that sustains massive global fisheries and yet is also a slow‐growing temperate tuna. Consequently, we used 1,837 neutral SNP loci and 89 loci under potential selection to analyze population genetic structure among five sample groups collected from the western and central South Pacific. We found no evidence to challenge panmixia at neutral loci, but strong indications of structuring at adaptive loci. One population sample, from French Polynesia in 2004, was particularly differentiated. Unfortunately, the current study cannot infer whether the divergence is geographic or temporal, or possibly caused by sample distribution. We encourage future studies to include potentially adaptive loci and to continue fine‐scale observations within an ocean basin, and not to assume genome‐wide panmixia.  相似文献

根据2009—2012年南太平洋长鳍金枪鱼(Thunnus alalunga)延绳钓生产统计数据及遥感获取的海表温度(sea surface temperature,SST)、叶绿素a浓度(chlorophyll a concentration,Chl-a)和海面高度距平(sea surface height anomaly,SSHA)等环境数据,分析了长鳍金枪鱼单位捕捞努力量渔获量(catch per unit of fishing effort,CPUE)的时空分布及其与环境因子的相关性。结果表明:长鳍金枪鱼作业渔场主要集中在4°S—28°S、158°E—176°E附近海域;长鳍金枪鱼渔场CPUE呈明显的季节性变化,1—3月CPUE值较低(12.5尾·千钩-1),随后逐渐增加,至7月达到最大值为18.1尾·千钩-1,而8—12月基本呈逐渐降低趋势;1月渔场重心位于16°S、168°E附近海域,2—3月向西北偏移,而在3—7月逐渐向东南方向转移,8月以后开始逐渐回撤至西北方向,在9—12月渔场重心变化幅度相对较小,主要位于15°S—16°S、168°E—169°E海域;总体来说,长鳍金枪鱼中心渔场最适SST为27.0~30.5℃,次适SST为20~24℃;最适叶绿素a浓度为0.02~0.08mg·m-3,最适海面高度距平为3~23 cm。  相似文献

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers to amplify the fourth intron of glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) gene were designed. A large length variation of amplified fragment was observed in the Atlantic albacore sample with a moderate level of heterozygosity (HE = 0.488). Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed deletion or insertion of a large nucleotide block (110 base pairs) to be responsible for the length difference. Successful amplification of single or two fragments was confirmed in the northern bluefin tuna and Pacific saury, indicating the wide cross‐species applicability.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to analyse the differences in morphometric characteristics among specimens of Atlantic juvenile bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus [12.2–46.5 cm fork length (FL)] and juvenile little tuna Euthynnus alletteratus (14.1–26.4 cm FL). A total of 353 bluefin tuna (young of the year) and 288 little tuna (young of the year) were collected from the commercial hand line fisheries in the eastern Mediterranean Sea between July and October of 2011–2013 with three round‐bent hook sizes (numbers 10, 12 and 14; Mustad 2315S). By using univariate and multivariate analysis, 11 morphometric characters were investigated. anova revealed highly significant differences (P < 0.001) for all morphometric parameters among the two species. The principal component analysis showed that the difference between the species resulted mainly from preanal length (LA), caudal fin hight (CC), snout length (SnL), eye diameter (ED) and postorbital length (PO). The stepwise discriminant analysis revealed that juveniles of the two tuna species were correctly classified, with a percentage of 99.2%. Length of pectoral fin (LP) was the strongest predictor in the discriminant functions.  相似文献

In this paper, the examination of some reproductive features and stomach contents of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, were determined by samples taken from Iranian drifting gillnets in the Oman Sea in the years 2007 to 2009. The male to female ratio in overall size was 1 : 0.93, which was not significantly different from the expected value 1 : 1. Fish lengths ranged from 37 to 152 cm, averaging 78.5 cm for females and 79.2 cm for males. At a larger size (>117 cm) males were proportionally predominant. Length at first maturity, Lm 50%, was observed when females reached 77.2 cm. Data from maturity stages indicated a single spawning period, peaking in May‐June, corresponding with a drop in the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI). Fishes were the main prey group, comprising 47.6% of total numbers among the three food item categories in the tuna stomachs. Among the 12 families identified in the stomachs, the Portunidae swimming crab crustacean was the most important prey organism (18.7% of total numbers). A wide range of prey species found in yellowfin tuna stomachs reflects an opportunistic feeding behaviour restricted by local prey availability. Considering the scarcity of available data, the results of the present paper will provide a reference for better knowledge of the biological features of Talbacares in the Oman Sea.  相似文献

Swordfish Xiphias gladius are multiple spawners with asynchronous oocyte development, which results in an indeterminate fecundity pattern. The dynamics of oocyte maturation is typified by seven bootstrapped oocyte distributions that represent the maturation process, and aids in the identification of ovaries with hydrated oocytes that have not spawned. Because of the difficulties in obtaining adequate samples for fecundity estimates in swordfish, the classification of the maturation process becomes very useful when methods for identifying ovulated or post-spawning females, such as histology, are restricted or unavailable.  相似文献

This study is the first culture-independent report on the regional variability of bacterial diversity in oxic sediments from the unexplored southern Cretan margin (SCM). Three main deep basins (water column depths: 2670–3603 m), located at the mouth of two submarine canyons (Samaria Gorge and Paximades Channel) and an adjacent slope system, as well as two shallow upper-slope stations (water column depths: 215 and 520 m), were sampled. A total of 454 clones were sequenced and the bacterial richness, estimated through five clone libraries using rarefaction analysis, ranged from 71 to 296 unique phylotypes. The average sequence identity of the retrieved Cretan margin sequences compared to the >1,000,000 known rRNA sequences was only 93.5%. A diverse range of prokaryotes was found in the sediments, which were represented by 15 different taxonomic groups at the phylum level. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that these new sequences grouped with the phyla Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria, Gamma-, Alpha- and Delta-proteobacteria. Only a few bacterial clones were affiliated with Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Verrucomicrobia, Nitrospirae, Beta-proteobacteria, Lentisphaerae and Dictyoglomi. A large fraction of the retrieved sequences (12%) did not fall into any taxonomic division previously characterized by molecular criteria, whereas four novel division-level lineages, termed candidate division SCMs, were identified. Bacterial community composition demonstrated significant differences in comparison to previous phylogenetic studies. This divergence was mainly triggered by the dominance of Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria and reflected a bacterial community different from that currently known for oxic and pristine marine sediments.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to describe the biometry of Mediterranean bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, the biology of which is not yet well understood. A total of 504 specimens was collected from 1998 to 2005 in the central part of the Mediterranean basin. They were sexed and measured; fork lengths (FL) ranged from 51.0 to 255.0 cm while body weights (W) ranged from 2.6 to 247.0 kg. The first spiniform ray (spine) of the first dorsal fin was removed and cross‐sectioned near the condyle base in order to count annuli for age estimation. The regression coefficient (b) of the female FL–W relationship was significantly higher than that of the male, and both sexes displayed a negatively allometric growth (b < 3); male regression equation: ln W = ?2.942 + 2.730 ln FL; female regression equation: ln W = ?3.660 + 2.878 ln FL. Based on counts of the translucent zones in the sections of the first ray of the first dorsal fin, estimated ages ranged from 1 to 15 years for males and 1 to 14 years for females. The correlation between the spine ray (R) and FL fit the allometric model best; the R–FL regression equations of the two sexes did not differ significantly and the overall equation was: ln FL = 3.721 + 0.851 ln R. Due to the R–FL allometric correlation, estimates of fork lengths at previous ages, FLi, were back‐calculated with a body proportional hypothesis. Von Bertalanffy growth equations were derived from both observed and back‐calculated FLs‐at‐age, which did not differ significantly. Moreover, no significant difference was found between the growth equations of the two sexes; the overall equation was FLt = 373.08 [1?e?0.07(t + 1.76)]. Weight‐at‐age values were derived from the von Bertalanffy predicted FLs‐at‐age by the FL–W correlation equations for males and females. The paper represents the first comprehensive study on the biometry, including age and growth, of bluefin tuna captured in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

The diet of juvenile bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught 2 to 8 miles off NE Sicily was investigated in order to improve knowledge of the species’ early life history. From 1998 to 2000, 107 specimens ranging from 63 to 495 mm (total length) were fished between July and November. Fishes were caught by trolling line or purse seine in a Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) area 2 to 8 miles offshore and as by‐catch of the purse‐seine sardine fishery 2 to 4 miles offshore. Most frequently found items in the T. thynnus stomachs were fishes (84.5%), crustaceans (54.6%) and cephalopods (50.5%). The largest contribution in weight was provided by cephalopods (47.3%) and fishes (46.5%), while the most abundant items were fishes (51%), cephalopods (27.2%) and crustaceans (21.1%). These results suggest that young‐of‐the‐year tuna have an essentially piscivorous diet, although invertebrate prey provide a substantial contribution to the food array. Prey show little relationship with FADs, although one prey species (blue runner, Caranx crysos) is associated with FADs in the Mediterranean.  相似文献
