A post‐hoc analysis on the decline of the European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) population in the Elbe River was performed for the end of the 19th century. A modeling approach was applied to determine the role of various factors potentially impacting the population. Using an age‐structured population model developed for European sturgeon, the estimates of fishing efficiency in the Elbe were verified. Catches reported from 1850 to 1920 were used as a basis to identify the population size, dynamics of the decline and the impacts contributing to the population decline. According to results of the model, the historic population size of the European sturgeon in the Elbe River exceeded 450 000 individuals. The population revealed a significant response in abundance of adults towards the fishery directed at spawning migrants, even at low fishery effort. Unsustainable fishery was the initial cause of the population decline, while increasing pollution and habitat degradation revealed significant impacts after 1860. The results represent a good example for the fisheries ‘hyperstability’ phenomenon. In the case of the Elbe fishery, an increasing fishery effort was masking the actual population decline while temporarily maintaining the overall yield. The results indicate that, for sturgeons and other species with similar life history patterns, the use of fishery data for the assessment of population dynamics and fishery sustainability has to be applied with due caution, as it might produce false images of the population size and dynamics.  相似文献

The Sox9 gene of Acipenser sturio, one of the most primitive vertebrates, was analyzed. No sex-specific differences were observed. Sturgeon Sox9 consists of three exons and two introns with completely conserved exon-intron boundaries showing high levels of homology to other vertebrate Sox9 sequences, especially in the N-terminus region containing the HMG box. We found strong evidence for negative (purifying) selection. In contrast to previous studies of other fishes, we observed no evidence for gene duplication in sturgeon. Phylogenetic analyses of Sox9 evolution revealed a basal position for sturgeon Sox9.  相似文献

This pilot study explored the potential of juvenile European Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio to feed on two invasive bivalve species, the Asian clam Corbicula fluminea and the Eurasian zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. Preliminary results indicate that native A. sturio were feeding on D. polymorpha at a very limited rate and their potential to prevent the establishment of invasive bivalve species, in new and previously invaded areas, is considered limited.  相似文献

Working towards a future Rhine Sturgeon Action Plan the outmigration pathways of stocked juvenile European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio L., 1758) were studied in the River Rhine in 2012 and 2015 using the NEDAP Trail system. A total of 87 sturgeon of 3 to 5 years old (n = 43 in 2012, n = 44 in 2015) were implanted with transponders and released in May and June in the river Rhine at the Dutch‐German border, approximately 160 km from the sea. In total three sturgeons (3%) were found dead on river banks within seven days after the release. Based upon their wounds these sturgeons were likely hit by ship‐propellers. Tracking results were obtained from 57 (66%) of the sturgeons, of which 39 (45%) indicated movement into the Port of Rotterdam. Here the sturgeons remained for an average of two weeks, which suggests they spent time to acclimatize to higher salinities before entering the North Sea. Of the 45 (52%) sturgeons that were confirmed to have entered the North Sea, ten (22%) were recaptured (mainly by shrimpers and gill‐nets) close to the Dutch coastline; nine were alive and were released. From the results we obtained the preferred outmigration pathways, movement speeds and an indication of impacting factors (i.e. ship propellers and bycatch). Bycatches provided also localisations information in the coastal area. A next step to complete this work would be to assess habitat selection in freshwater and downstream migration of young of the year (YOY sturgeons) in the Lower Rhine.  相似文献

Spawning by lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) in the Detroit River   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Overfishing and habitat destruction in the early 1900s devastated lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) populations in the Great Lakes. Although a comprehensive restoration strategy for this species was recently drafted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, a lack of current data on Great Lakes sturgeon stocks has hindered rehabilitation efforts. Historically, the Detroit River supported one of the largest lake sturgeon populations in the Great Lakes; however, little is known about the current population or its habitat use. The main objective of this study was to determine if lake sturgeon spawns in the Detroit River. As part of a larger study, baited setlines were used to capture lake sturgeon in the Detroit River in the spring and summer of 2000 and 2001. In each year of the study, ultrasonic transmitters were surgically implanted in 10 adult fish to track their movements, evaluate habitat use and identify possible spawning sites. Using telemetry and egg mats to verify spawning activity, one spawning site was located and verified in the Detroit River. Spawning was verified by recovering sturgeon eggs deposited on egg collection mats anchored at the site. Telemetry data suggested that several other possible spawning sites also may exist, however, spawning activity was not verified at these sites.  相似文献

Species translocations are increasingly being used as a management tool to mitigate population losses due to such factors as habitat degradation and fragmentation, but post‐introduction follow‐up is relatively sparse. Post‐translocation telemetry can assess success by identifying activity, emigrations, survival, habitat usage, and reproductive events, aiding in the continued management of translocated populations and informing future efforts. This study assessed movement of translocated adult lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) immediately post‐release and a decade later, and tested for associations between environmental variables and spawning movements. Prior to their translocation in 2002, 13 of 51 adult lake sturgeon were surgically implanted with radio telemetry tags and tracked for 1 year. In 2011 and 2013, eight additional adults were captured within the reintroduction site and implanted with radio‐tags. Six of the 13 sturgeon tagged in 2002 dispersed downstream over a dam during the early post‐release period. In spring 2014, tagged adults were tracked to the spillway at the release area's inflow, and spawning was confirmed by larval captures. Movement data for tagged adults differed between the two tracking periods, showing marked differences in behaviour over time. Water velocity was correlated with upstream and downstream spawning movements, with water temperature also correlated with downstream movement. Research regarding post‐translocation movement and dispersal provides insight on behavioural responses following translocation, and may improve outcomes by informing future efforts.  相似文献

We collected the first life history information on shortnose sturgeon ( Acipenser brevirostrum ) in any of the rivers to Chesapeake Bay, the geographic center of the species range. In the Potomac River, two telemetry-tagged adult females used 124 km of river: a saltwater/freshwater reach at river km (rkm) 63−141 was the foraging−wintering concentration area, and one female migrated to spawn at rkm 187 in Washington, DC. The spawning migration explained the life history context of an adult captured 122 years ago in Washington, DC, supporting the idea that a natal population once lived in the river. Repeated homing migrations to foraging and wintering areas suggested the adults were residents, not transient coastal migrants. All habitats that adults need to complete life history are present in the river. The Potomac River shortnose sturgeon offers a rare opportunity to learn about the natural rebuilding of a sturgeon population.  相似文献

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) are of conservation concern throughout their range. Many populations are dependent on fluvial habitats which have been increasingly impacted and fragmented by dams and human development. Although lake sturgeon were once abundant in the Ottawa River and its tributaries, historical commercial harvests and other anthropogenic factors caused severe declines and low contemporary numbers in lake sturgeon populations. Contemporary habitat fragmentation by dams may be increasing isolation among habitat patches and local rates of decline, raising concerns for persistence of local populations. We used microsatellite DNA markers to assess population structure and diversity of lake sturgeon in the Ottawa River, and analyzed samples from 10 sites that represent more than 500 km of riverine habitat. To test for evidence of anthropogenic fragmentation, patterns of genetic diversity and connectivity within and among river segments were tested for concordance with geographic location, separation by distance and obstacles to migration, considering both natural and artificial barriers as well as barrier age. Despite extensive habitat fragmentation throughout the Ottawa River, statistical analyses failed to refute panmixia of lake sturgeon in this system. Although the long generation time of lake sturgeon appears to have effectively guarded against the negative genetic impacts of habitat fragmentation and loss so far, evidence from demographic studies indicates that restoring connectivity among habitats is needed for the long-term conservation and management of this species throughout this river system.  相似文献

The utility of genetic measures for kinship reconstruction in polysomic species is not well evaluated. We developed a framework to test hypotheses about estimating breeding population size indirectly from collections of outmigrating green sturgeon juveniles. We evaluated a polysomic dataset, in allelic frequency and phenotypic formats, from green sturgeon to describe the relationship among known progeny from experimental families. The distributions of relatedness values for kin classes were used for reconstructing green sturgeon pedigrees from juveniles of unknown relationship. We compared three rarefaction functions that described the relationship between the number of kin groups and number of samples in a pedigree to estimate the annual abundance of spawners contributing to the threatened green sturgeon Southern Distinct Population Segment in the upper Sacramento River. Results suggested the estimated abundance of breeding green sturgeon remained roughly constant in the upper Sacramento River over a 5‐year period, ranging from 10 to 28 individuals depending on the year and rarefaction method. These results demonstrate an empirical understanding for the distribution of relatedness values among individuals is a benefit for assessing pedigree reconstruction methods and identifying misclassification rates. Monitoring of rare species using these indirect methods is feasible and can provide insight into breeding and ontogenetic behaviour. While this framework was developed for specific application to studying fish populations in a riverscape, the framework could be advanced to improve genetic estimation of breeding population size and to identify important breeding habitats of rare species when combined with finer‐scaled sampling of offspring.  相似文献

The shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum; SNS) is an endangered fish that thrives in large river systems along the U.S. east coast. Despite the endangered status, our understanding of this species’ ecology is limited, especially regarding the importance of smaller river systems to their recovery. In 2010, the first sighting of SNS occurred in the Saco River estuary (SRE), Maine, a proportionately smaller system to other known drainages. To investigate the habitat usage of SNS within the SRE, an on‐going acoustic tagging study was initiated in 2011. In 2016, the collection of SRE abiotic data was coupled with the acoustic tagging study in an effort to establish which environmental parameters were most influential to SNS habitat preferences using Poisson regression. Aggregations of SNS in the SRE were concentrated rkm 6–8 and regression analyses revealed that water temperature, conductivity, acidity, and dissolved oxygen content were influential to these aggregations. Furthermore, SNS prey appears to be present and abundant throughout the estuary, and thus we hypothesize that SNS use the SRE as a foraging ground, but aggregate upriver due to the physiologically preferable and energetically optimal abiotic conditions.  相似文献

Green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) and white sturgeon (A. transmontanus) are closely related, sympatric species that inhabit the San Francisco estuary. Green sturgeon have a more marine life history but both species spawn in the Sacramento River and reside for some duration in San Francisco Bay. These sturgeons are of conservation concern, yet little is known about their dietary competition when they overlap in space and time. To examine evidence of dietary differentiation, we collected whole blood and blood plasma from 26 green sturgeon and 35 white sturgeon in San Francisco Bay. Using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses, we compared their relative trophic levels and foraging locations along the freshwater to marine gradient. Sampling blood plasma and whole blood allowed comparison of dietary integration over shorter and longer time scales, respectively. Plasma and whole blood δ13C values confirmed green sturgeon had more marine dietary sources than white sturgeon. Plasma δ15N values revealed white sturgeon fed at lower trophic levels than green sturgeon recently, however, whole blood δ15N values demonstrated the two species fed at the same trophic level over longer time scales. Larger individuals of both species had higher δ13C values than smaller individuals, reflecting more marine food sources in adulthood. Length did not affect δ15N values of either species. Isotope analyses supported the more marine life history of green than white sturgeon and potentially highlight a temporary trophic differentiation of diet between species during and preceding the overlapping life stage in San Francisco Bay.  相似文献

The Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is an endemic and critically endangered species in China. In this study, a total of 24 polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized using Illumina sequencing for A. sinensis. The number of alleles (Na) per locus ranged from 2 to 6 (mean 4.04), mean expected heterozygosities (He), Shannon‐Wiener Diversity Indices (SW) and evenness (E) per locus ranged from 0.235 to 0.786 (mean 0.62), from 0.396 to 1.608 (mean 1.13), and from 0.060 to 0.213 (mean 0.13), respectively. Exact tests revealed that nine loci showed significant (P < 0.01) deviation from Hardy‐Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). Cross amplification was tested in congeneric species A. schrenskii, A. baerii, A. dabryanus and Huso dauricus. The new microsatellite markers described herein will be useful for further studies on genetic variation, parentage analysis, and conservation management.  相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a conserved component of the innate immune response in many species. In the present study, the cDNA sequences encoding two AMPs (cathelicidin and NK‐lysin, comprising 1,576 and 606 bp, respectively) were cloned from Dabry's sturgeon (Acipenser dabryanus). Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the two AMPs were clustered together with homologous protein sequences from other fish. NK‐lysin was highly expressed during early embryonic development, suggesting maternal transmission. Tissue distribution analysis showed that cathelicidin had the highest expression in the liver and NK‐lysin was most abundantly expressed in the spleen. In response to Poly I:C treatment, the expression of cathelicidin was upregulated at 12 and 24 hr post induction (hpi), but downregulated at 72 hpi. NK‐lysin mRNA expression increased after treatment with Poly I:C, reaching a peak at 24 hpi. Lipopolysaccharide treatment also induced the expression of two antimicrobial peptide genes. Lipopolysaccharide treatment significantly upregulated the expression of cathelicidin at 6, 24, and 48 hpi, and upregulated NK‐lysin expression at 6 and 12 hpi. These results suggested that two AMPs could participate in the immune response induced by poly I:C or LPS stimulation.  相似文献
