Between 1932–1947 and from 1960 onwards, elvers have been trapped near the mouth of the River Bann, Northern Ireland, and released into Lough Neagh. Each period of elver transport has been followed by a marked increase in the proportion of male silver eels migrating from the lough. Catches of silver eels were sampled on several nights each year from 1965–1974, and the lengths of a total of 20358 eels measured showed a progressive increase in the percentage of male eels from 9.3-86.0 % during this period. Various reasons for this change were examined. The different ages at which male and female eels migrate to the sea was not important. There was no evidence to support the hypothesis that male elvers normally remain in estuarine conditions, and their transport to the lough was therefore unnatural. An increasing fishing effort for yellow eels, such as occurred following the introduction of trawling in 1960, would favour males since small eels were returned to the lough. It was not thought, however, that this was a major cause of the change in sex ratio. Instead, elver transport appeared to be directly implicated, possibly by the overstocking of Lough Neagh, and the phenotypic determination of progressively more male eels, but the evidence for this suggestion was inconclusive.  相似文献

The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is an imperilled fish hypothesized to use conspecific cues, in part, to coordinate long-distance migration during their multistage life history. Here, holding water and tissue from multiple American eel life stages was collected and analysed for the presence, profile and concentration of bile acids. Distinct bile acid profiles were identified in glass, elver, yellow eel and silver eel holding waters using ultraperformance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry and principal component analysis. Taurochenodeoxycholic acid, taurodeoxycholic acid, cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, taurolithocholic acid and taurocholic acid were detected in whole tissue of American glass eels and elvers, and in liver, intestine and gallbladder samples of late-stage yellow eels. Bile acids were not a major component of silver eel washings or tissue. This study is novel because little was previously known about bile acids produced and emitted into the environment by American eels. Future behavioural studies could evaluate whether any bile acids produced by American eels influence conspecific migratory behaviour.  相似文献

Hybrids between Papio anubis and P. cynocephalus occur in nature. We have studied laboratory bred hybrids, together with their backcrossed offspring. Electrophoretic experiments on the proteins, serum enzymes and erythrocytes obtained from both hybrids and parents lead to three conclusions. First, both parents and hybrids possess proteins having identical mobilities; this case is the most frequent in the 23 loci studied. Second, individual polymorphism caused by, for example, carbonic anhydrase I or transferrin in one or both parents results in the appearance of a codominant phenotype in the hybrid, when the parental components are distinguishable. Third, when other enzymes such as albumin, alkaline phosphatase, haemoglobin and the serum esterases have particular electrophoretic mobilities in the parents, then the hybrid is again codominant; a particularly interesting case among the esterases is that of pseudocholinesterase, where the paternal component is partially repressed in the hybrid. The hybrid than exhibits the phenomenon of allelic repression of at least one gene, which confirms the taxonomic position of species of the two forms of Papio studied.  相似文献

The Shannon, Ireland’s largest river, is used for hydroelectricity generation since 1929. Subsequently, the Electricity Supply Board assumed responsibility for management of its eel stocks, due to the impact of the hydro-dam on recruitment to the commercial fishery. In order to negate a decline in juvenile recruitment resulting from the installation of hydroelectric facilities, management was focused on stocking lakes with elvers and fingerling eels. These were trapped at the hydropower facilities and in estuarine tributaries during their up-stream migrations. Due to the decline of natural recruitment in more recent times, attempts have also been made to develop an estuarine glass eel fishery. Stock levels are then monitored through annual surveys of the population trends of juvenile (glass eel, elver), growing phase (yellow eel) and downstream migrating pre-spawners (silver eels). Survey results and fishery management programmes are reviewed in this article. In addition to the long-term effects the hydroelectric facilities have had on the stock levels, there is also an annual effect on the migratory patterns of downstream migratory silver eels. In the lower reaches of the river system flow rates are regulated by the hydroelectric stations. We review previous work that had highlighted the importance of flow in determining the timing of the silver eels migrations, and assess the relationship between flow and migration in more detail through the use of hydroacoustic and telemetric studies. Current research on seaward migrating silver eel populations, suggests that spawner escapement rates can most effectively be increased by trapping migrating eels at fishing weirs located up-stream of the power station and transporting them towards the estuary. The screening of 2,735 eels from European waters and aquaculture farms was conducted using mitochondrial Cytochrome b and 16S rRNA gene fragments amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Reaction products were either sequenced directly or subjected to analysis using restriction fragment length polymorphism which resulted in species-specific restriction patterns. Beside the expected European eel, Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), the American eel, Anguilla rostrata (Le Sueur, 1817), was also identified in samples from both aquaculture (N = 40 out of 1,025) and from natural waters (N = 44 out of 1,710). The life stages of American eels identified from several German waters draining to either the Baltic Sea and the North Sea ranged from elver to silver eels. This indicates that stocking with glass eels or elvers must have occurred several times most likely in the period from 1998 to 2002. The application of a fast and precise method for species identification and genetic monitoring of eels delivered for stocking is therefore essential for maintaining the autochthonous species composition in future. In the present study, glass eels Anguilla anguilla in the Minho River estuary (41·5° N, 8·5° W) decreased in size (standard length, L S and mass, M ) from the beginning (autumn) to the end of the sampling season (summer). On the other hand elvers increased in L S and M from spring to summer and were significantly larger than glass eels in paired comparisons. Branchial Na+/K+-ATPase and vacuolar (V-type) proton ATPase ( in vitro activities), two important ion transporting pumps, did not show significant seasonal changes in either glass eels or elvers although in glass eels Na+/K+-ATPase (activity) expression was significantly higher than in elvers. In a single month comparison Na+/K+-ATPase branchial mRNA expression was also higher in glass eels as was the protein level expression of both Na+/K+-ATPase and NKCC (Na+:K+:2Cl co-transporter). Immunofluorescence microscopy indicated apical CFTR Cl channel labelling in Na+/K+-ATPase positive chloride cell in glass eels which was absent in elvers. Whole body sodium concentration and percentage water did not show significant seasonal differences in either glass eels or elvers although there were significant differences between these two groups during some months.  相似文献

Fishery sustainability and the extinction risk of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, are of global concern. The landings of the Japanese eel in Japan comprise a large part of the landings in East Asia. This study provides a compiled dataset of the annual fisheries statistics of the Japanese eel in Japan for stock assessment. The Japanese government has been recording Japanese eel statistics annually since 1984 in five series of annual reports by conducting systematic questionnaire surveys of fisheries managers and associations; however, most of these data are stored in analog format. The key variables in the dataset include the harvest weight of eels, the harvest weight and number of seeds for aquaculture, the number of eels stocked, and the number of management entities engaged in the eel fishery. The levels of spatial aggregation of the variables include the site (river and lake), prefecture, inland and coastal waters, and total in Japan. We also incorporated location data (latitude and longitude) of the site and prefecture into the dataset. Eel harvest includes primarily yellow eels (late juvenile stage) and silver eels (mature stage). Seed harvest in inland waters includes glass eels (intermediate stage between leptocephalus and elver) and elvers (early juvenile stage). Seed harvest from coastal waters comprises glass eels. This dataset provides information to assess long-term trends in the Japanese eel population.  相似文献

Synopsis The otolith length and the total fish length of 9 leptocephali, 29 elvers and 51 sub-adult eels were measured. For the 51 eels a significant correlation between otolith and fish length was found. No similar correlation was found for leptocephali and elvers because of their similar total length. It was found that the growth of the otolith from leptocephali and elvers differs from the growth of herring larvae otoliths.  相似文献

The newly recruited Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica , elvers and 1-year-old eels collected in estuaries and in rivers, respectively, were studied. The microstructure and chemical composition of the sagittal otolith of these eels were examined by SEM and wavelength-dispersive spectrometer (WDS), A transition zone or'elver mark'was observed in the otolith of the young eels. A comparison of the otoliths of elvers with those from the 1-year-old eels suggests that this transition zone was deposited during upstream migration, a change from a marine to freshwater environment. Strontium (Sr) content in the primordium of the otolith of both elvers and young eels was low, probably due to the maternal or freshwater origin of the oocyte. The concentration of Sr in the otolith increased gradually during marine life and reached a peak approximately 1 month before upstream migration. As the elvers entered the estuary, the Src concentration dramatically decreased and remained at a low level thereafter. These findings indicate that the history of the migratory environment of the eel can be reconstructed from a combined study of otolith microstructure and microchemistry analysis.  相似文献

The up-river migration of eels in the R. Thames has been studied at a number of locations since 1985. The run occurs between April and October, with the majority of eels moving over a distinct period averaging 47 days in May–June. The timing of the run varies and its commencement appears to be mainly dependent on water temperature. The number of unpigmented elvers migrating from the estuary to fresh water is variable and most appear to spend at least one year in the estuary. The average size and age of migrants increases with distance upstream. Migrants leaving the estuary were mainly 1–3 river-year (<14 cm) pigmented juveniles, though individuals of up to 45 cm were encountered. At a site 15 km from the estuary the majority of migrants were between 4 and 8 river-year eels (20–30 cm). Mark–recapture studies showed variable tendencies to display migratory behaviour among individuals, with some taking up to 2 years to reappear in a trap when released a few hundred metres below it. The implications of the results with respect to the commercial fishery in the estuary, populations in the catchment, and the contribution of Thames eels to international stocks and recruitment are discussed.  相似文献

The time elvers of the American eel, Anguilla rostrata , spend in an estuary prior to their migration into fresh water was assessed. A distinct mark was formed on elvers' otoliths during their first 2 to 3 weeks in the river estuary. This mark was used to distinguish between growth in fresh water and in salt water. Migrating eels collected at a falls 4 km from the estuary exhibited bimodal length and weight distributions. Frequency distributions showed that eels collected in the estuary were smaller and had smaller otoliths than eels collected at the falls, indicating that elvers do not reach the falls in the same year as they enter the estuary. The three modal groups most probably represent three age–classes. However, the otoliths of elvers collected in the estuary had only the mark of transition whereas eels in the first and second mode at the falls usually had two rings (1–4) and four rings (3–6) per otolith, respectively, in addition to the mark of transition, as viewed under SEM. The possibility that ring formation is not annual means that the use of otoliths for the age determination of eels in this study has not been validated.  相似文献

In glass eels (54 mm TL; 0.018 g) of the Australian shortfin eel Anguilla australis the fatty acid composition was typical of marine species, with a n-3 to n-6 ratio of 5.3, a low level of mono saturated fatty acids (monoenes) and a high level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In elvers (pigmented: 56 mm TL; 0.028 g), the n-3 to n-6 ratio was 2.6. In elvers monoenes, as per cent of all identifiable fatty acids, increased to 30.9% from that of 19.8% in glass eels. The fatty acid composition of juvenile eels, reared from the original stock of glass eels and elvers, in outdoor, fertilized ponds, with (115 mmTL; 2.2 g) and without feeding (110 mmTL; 1.9 g), had a fatty acid composition typical of freshwater species, with a n-3 to n-6 ratio 1.9 and 1.3, and 37.7 and 46.5% of monoenes in unfed and fed groups respectively. A principal component analysis summarized efficiently the progressive changes in fatty acid composition from the glass eel to juvenile eel stage. The observed changes in the fatty acid of the different developmental stages in Australian shortfin eel are discussed in relation to physiological changes associated with the diadromous habit.  相似文献

Stocks of the European eel Anguilla anguilla have been in a steep decline since the 1980s. Stocking of water bodies with juvenile eels captured in the wild to establish or enhance local populations has been a common practise in Europe for many decades. However, the degree of contribution by stocked eels to natural spawning capacity is poorly known and extensively debated. There have been suggestions that eels derived from stocking are less likely to contribute to the spawning stock due to a lack of navigational capability and lower fitness related to insufficiency of energetic resources. Results of the current study indicated that eels translocated long distances from the point of capture and released into inland waters in Lithuania are successfully undergoing the silvering process. A proportion of 23.7% (N = 27) among all migrating eels were described to be at the yellow (SI, SFII or SFIII) eel stage and downstream movements of these eels should be attributed to local movements, rather than spawning migration; 76.3% were assigned to the silver eel stage. This study suggests that 36.8% (N = 32) of downstream migrating silver eels of stocked origin had accumulated sufficient energetic resources for spawning migration and gonadal development and should be able to traverse the 7900-km distance to the presumptive spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea. The rest of migrating silver eels (63.2%, N = 55) had insufficient energetic resources; the average potential swimming range of these eels was estimated to be 6135 ± 683 km.  相似文献

The European eel Anguilla anguilla is a species of great economic importance for Egypt. Its long trans-Atlantic migrations for semelparous spawning then larval homing provides a possible way for worldwide mixing of populations. Its natural habitats in Egypt, as in other Mediterranean countries, are under heavy load of pollution due to anthropogenic activities. Hence, a major priority should be given to assess the genetic diversity within/among eels’ populations as a step towards revealing populations’ status, identification of possible conservation units, and, subsequently, implementation of proper conservation and management strategies for them. For this, A. anguilla elvers were collected from Rosetta estuary and Burullus coastal lagoon in the North of Egypt. Sequencing of the barcode region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI) was carried out for all collected elvers. The sequences were analyzed using various genetic, phylogenetic, and population analyses to assess their variability. A total of 33 haplotypes were identified, 14 of which were unique to Burullus Lake, and 11 to Rosetta estuary. Very low fixation (F st ?=?0–0.04) was found for A. anguilla populations in Egypt and worldwide, except for the Turkish and Czech ones (F st ?=?0.47–0.62 and 0.18–0.41, respectively). Both Egyptian populations showed signs of recent populations’ expansion, besides low, non-significant raggedness values. The results suggested Burullus Lake and Rosetta estuary as separate conservation units for A. anguilla in Egypt. These units require special attention for proper protection and management of the existing eel diversity and permitting sustainability in the activities dealing with eel’s fishing and aquaculture.  相似文献

Stockings of elvers (Anguilla anguilla L.) were made in 1982 and 1984 in a Swedish cooling water effluent area at the coast of the Baltic proper. The elvers were tagged using radioactive europium isotopes; recaptures were made by yearly samplings from 1983–1989. Détéction of eels tagged by this technique was found to be possible for at least 7 years after stocking. At the end of the study, 3.5 % and 1.3 %, respectively, of the stockings were recaptured in our own sampling programme. Growth of the introduced eels was faster than reported in studies on comparable populations. As high temperatures have a potential to change vital physiological functions, body condition, fat content and size distribution were studied in the stocking area, in two additional cooling water effluents, and in two reference areas along a salinity gradient from the Baltic to the northern Kattegat! where Atlantic waters have a major influence. Although there were indications of early sexual maturation in warm waters, the high survival of introduced eels, their tendency to stay in the stocking area, the fast growth and the positive effect on quality paramétérs such as fat content speaks in favour of an allocation of eel management to thermal discharge areas.  相似文献

Using histological sections, the gonads of samples of yellow and silver eels of two populations were examined. The populations were previously analysed for growth and sex ratio. The histological structures observed are similar to those described in previous publications for the European eel, Anguilla anguilla and to those indicated for the Pacific eel, A. japonica . Well differentiated gonads are present in the silver eels. In the yellow eels, ranging in age from 0 + to 2 + years and from a length of 20 cm to that at which they become silver, undif-ferentiated and both sex gonads are found. Histological evidence is presented which suggests that the ovary, found even in young and small eels, is completely differentiated at a very early stage. The testis-like gonad of the yellow eel is a more primitive, and possibly reversible, gonad which differentiates completely at the beginning of sexual maturation and the change to the silver phase.  相似文献

The patterns of infection of American eels Anguilla rostrata, with the introduced swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus, in tributaries of middle and upper Chesapeake Bay are described. A total of 423 subadult eels was collected from 8 Bay tributaries from spring 1998 to fall 1999. Also, 30 elvers were collected from Ocean City, Maryland, in spring 1998. The numbers of juvenile and adult specimens of A. crassus in the swimbladder wall and lumen were counted. No elvers were infected. In subadult eels, prevalence of adult and juvenile stages combined ranged from 13% to 82%; mean intensity ranged from 2.6 to 9.0 worms per eel. Infection levels were highest for Susquehanna River eels (northernmost river) and lowest in the southernmost sites: St. Jerome's Creek and the Pocomoke River. Although eels from these 2 localities were larger, the low infection rates there are most likely due to reduced transmission in higher salinity water and not to eel size. Eels with both adult and juvenile stages of A. crassus were more common than expected by chance. This might be explained by inhibition of juveniles migrating into the swimbladder lumen when adults are already present there.  相似文献

The growth of over a 1000 eels from three different watersheds was investigated. Because of the difficulties of sexing eels we were only able to compare the size of females with that of eels with lobulate organs (some of the latter are potential females). Generally female eels grow faster than the others. There was little difference in the growth of eels with lobulate organs even though there was a great difference in the eel population density in the three localities. But, in any one locality there was a large range of growth. It is suggested that the competition for food is most acute amongst the smaller size groups. As they grow, eels tend to become cannibalistic and find small eels and elvers an easy source of food.
The growth of some continental eels has been related to temperature but this is not confirmed by experimental work. Nevertheless eels eat little or nothing at low temperature as is shown by the large percentage of eels with empty stomachs in our samples.  相似文献
