The sandy-beach isopod Tylos granulatus Krauss burrows at the high tide mark, and has rhythms of nocturnal emergence coincident with the low tide period. Measurements of the respiration rate show that a low rate of oxygen consumption is maintained throughout the day but there is a circatidal rhythmic increase of between 300 and 700% during the nocturnal low tide. The height of this peak and the percentage of animals displaying a peak both increase from spring tide to neap tide suggesting a semi-lunar rhythm. The respiratory peaks have a 24.8 h periodicity, being later each night until low tide falls in the dawn, when there is a ‘switch-back’ so that peaks are then during the subsequent evening low tide. These respiratory rhythms are persistent under constant light and coincide with previously described activity rhythms. The respiratory rhythms considerably reduce metabolic energy losses, particularly as the activity rhythms ensure avoidance of high diurnal temperatures and activity during the cooler nocturnal period.  相似文献

Melanerita atramentosa Reeve is active during high water and for a period after the ebb, until the substratum dries. A circatidal rhythm with an endogenous inequality between the diurnal and nocturnal high water activity is present in freshly collected snails placed under constant conditions (LL, 30 lux, temperature 21 °C, water level constant). The free-running period of the circatidal rhythm was approximately 24.3 h, slightly less than the tidal period of 24.8 h. This rhythm faded out after 4–6 days of constant conditions. Snails acclimated to non-tidal conditions were active at night. This rhythm persisted under constant conditions for 5–10 days, after which it too faded out. Shock-freezing re-initiated the circatidal rhythm, supporting a ‘multiple-clock’ hypothesis of control. Its limits entrainment are probably narrow, but an entrained periodicity persists for a number of cycles. A model of clock interaction and environmental influence is advanced.  相似文献

Extracts of crevice sediment volatiles were attractive to the intertidal carabid beetle Thalassotrechus barbarae (Horn) suggesting that these compounds serve as chemical cues to adults selecting crevices to enter after their nocturnal excursions on nearby rock surfaces. In this respect, T. barbarae resembles saline lakeshore carabid beetles that recognize their habitats by perceiving volatiles emitted by microorganisms. Analyses of the crevice sediments showed that they were predominantly sand with enough clay (mean 2.7%) and organic matter (mean 1.7%) to have a mean cation exchange capacity of 9.13 cmol(+)·kg−1. Sodium adsorption ratios (mean 40.3), exchangeable sodium percentages (mean 35.9), and electrical conductivities (mean 18.8 dS·m−1) of the sediment solution, as well as cation exchange capacity, were similar to those of sediments collected from nine carabid beetle habitats on the shores of saline lakes and ponds, indicating close ecological affinities between marine and non-marine littoral carabids.  相似文献

Although changes to interspecific relationships can significantly alter the composition of insect assemblages, they are often ignored when assessing impacts of environmental change. Long-term ground beetle data were used in this study to analyse ecological networks from three habitats at two sites in Scotland. A Bayesian Network inference algorithm was used to reveal interspecific relationships. The significance and strength of relationships between species (nodes) were estimated along with other network properties. Links were identified as positive relationships if co-occurrences of beetles correlated positively, and as negatives relationships if there was a negative correlation between the occurrences of the species. Most of the species had few links and only 10% of the nodes were connected with several links. Calathus fuscipes, a common carabid in the samples, was the most connected, with nine links to other species. More interspecific relationships were found to be positive than negative, with 48 and 23 links, respectively. The modular structure of the network was assessed and eight separate sub-networks were found. Habitat preferences of the species were clearly represented in the structure of the sets of those five sub-networks containing more than one species and were in line with the findings of the indicator species analysis. In our study, we showed that generated Bayesian networks can model interspecific relationships between carabid species. Due to the relative ease of the collection of field data and the high information content of the results, this method could be incorporated into everyday ecological analysis.  相似文献

An overview of carabid beetles in the New Zealand conservation context is provided. Processes for threatened species recovery within the New Zealand Department of Conservation are outlined, and the Department’s two major beetle-related recovery documents (The Conservation Requirements for New Zealand’s Nationally Threatened Invertebrates, and The Carabid Beetle Recovery Plan) are discussed. A subjective consideration of the merits and drawbacks of both the documents, and the systems that support them, is presented, along with an option for the way forward for threatened species conservation in New Zealand.  相似文献

小毛足鼠(Phodopus roborovskii)是分布在内蒙古草原沙地的一种小型哺乳动物,关于其生物学和生态学特征,尤其是生理学特征还知之甚少。似昼夜节律是动物行为学和生理生态学中备受关注的一个领域。在室内条件下通过体内埋置无线电传感器连续监测小毛足鼠的体温、用自动监测系统连续监测活动性和TSE LabMaster呼吸代谢测定系统连续测定了其代谢率的昼夜节律性。结果发现:小毛足鼠在夜间的平均体温是(37.27±0.39)℃,昼间的平均体温是(36.11±0.18)℃;在夜间的平均代谢率是(4.65±1.10)mLO2·g-1·h-1,昼间的平均代谢率是(3.09±0.42)mLO2·g-1·h-1;在夜间的平均活动率为(237±145)次/0.1h,昼间的平均活动率为(38±5)次/0.1h。小毛足鼠的代谢率、活动性和体温的峰值相位主要集中在夜间,属典型的夜行性动物。实验结果从行为学特性和生理学特征等新的角度支持了野外观察小毛足鼠是夜行性动物的推断。综合活动性、代谢率和体温三方面同步变化的特征,为小毛足鼠的似昼夜节律变化提供了新的机理性解释。研究也表明小毛足鼠是研究野生动物似昼夜节律变化机理的好模型。  相似文献

Summary Genetic variability and similarity were examined in eight populations of the Kentucky cave beetle Neaphaenops tellkampfii (Coleoptera: Carabidae) using the technique of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Results indicate that N. tellkampfii has high genetic variation within and high genetic similarity among local populations. These results are in sharp contrast to the patterns of low variability and similarity reported for other cave dwelling species in the same region. It is concluded that the differences in genetical population structure among cave species in the Central Kentucky Karst are related to ecological differences among the species.  相似文献

The daily cycle of activity was investigated in a number of species of Carabidae. Most were either nocturnal or diurnal, but some were plastic and responded to environmental conditions.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) are associated with strictly entomochoric and mutualistic fungi. We studied the mycobiota associated with Scolytodes unipunctatus, ambrosia beetles that infest Cecropia trees in Central America. Isolates were characterized using morphology and rDNA sequences (ITS region, LSU, and SSU rDNA). Four species are described here: Raffaelea scolytodis sp. nov. (Ophiostomatales), Gondwanamyces scolytodis sp. nov., Custingophora cecropiae sp. nov., and Graphium sp. (Microascales). The genus Custingophora is emended to include Knoxdaviesia anamorphs of Gondwanamyces based on uniformity of DNA sequences and phenotype.  相似文献

Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are important in agro-ecosystems as generalist predators of invertebrate pests and weed seeds and as prey for larger animals. However, it is not well understood how cropping systems affect ground beetles. Over a 2-yr period, carabids were monitored two times per month using pitfall traps in a conventional chemical input, 2-yr, corn/soybean rotation system and a low input, 4-yr, corn/soybean/triticale-alfalfa/alfalfa rotation system. Carabid assemblages were largely dominated by a few species across all cropping treatments with Poecilus chalcites Say comprising >70% of pitfall catches in both years of study. Overall carabid activity density and species richness were higher in the low input, 4-yr rotation compared with the conventionally managed, 2-yr rotation. There were greater differences in the temporal activity density and species richness of carabids among crops than within corn and soybean treatments managed with different agrichemical inputs and soil disturbance regimes. Detrended correspondence analysis showed strong yearly variation in carabid assemblages in all cropping treatments. The increase in carabid activity density and species richness observed in the 4-yr crop rotation highlights the potential benefits of diverse crop habitats for carabids and the possibility for managing natural enemies by manipulating crop rotations.  相似文献

When removed into the laboratory, the intertidal snailPolinices incei, retains a tidal rhythm in activity for several days when maintained under conditions of constant light. There is, in addition, a gradual decline in activity following collection and a batch to batch effect of some note. When a 12∶12 light regime is maintained there is apparent also a c. 24 h rhythm in activity which may supercede the tidal one under some circumstances. The simplest explanation of the results is that there exist both tidal and diel rhythms. These results are compared with those observed by others for a variety of marine organisms, the adaptiveness of the behaviour pattern is discussed, and the implications of the work for further behavioural studies is explored.  相似文献

The diel activity rhythm shown by Paranephrops is usually unimodal with most activity occurring at night. In constant darkness, locomotor activity is expressed for up to 60 days as a free-running circadian rhythm. The period varies from 18 to 38 hours following a seasonal cycle (summer mean period 24 hours, winter mean 30 hours). No adaptive significance can be attached to either seasonal or individual variations in period and it is suggested that such variations are a consequence of the way in which the clock mechanism operates, the period being linked to the overall activity level following Aschoff's ( 1960 ) "Circadian Rule". Accurately measuring biodiversity is essential for successful conservation planning. Due to biodiversity’s complexity, specific taxa are often chosen as indicators of patterns of diversity as a whole. Such taxa can include vegetation which can inform conservation decisions by demarcating land units for management strategies. For land units to be useful, they must be accurate spatial representations of the species assemblages present on the landscape. In this study, we determined whether land units classified by vegetative communities predicted the community structure of a diverse group of invertebrates—the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Specifically, that (1) land units of the same classification contained similar carabid species assemblages and that (2) differences in species structure were correlated with variation in land unit characteristics, including canopy and ground cover, vegetation structure, tree density, leaf litter depth, and soil moisture. The study site, the Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve in Will County, Illinois is a mosaic of differing land units. Carabid beetles were sampled continuously with pitfall trapping for 1 year (excluding winter) from September 2011 to November 2011 and from March 2012 to September 2012. Land unit characteristics were measured in July 2012. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinated the land units by their carabid species assemblages into five ecologically meaningful clusters: disturbed, marsh, prairie, restoration, and savanna. The subset of land unit characteristics with the highest rank correlation with the NMDS ordination included soil moisture, leaf litter depth, percentage of canopy cover, and percentage of grass ground cover. Land units classified by vegetative communities effectively represented carabid species assemblages.  相似文献

Individuals of the shore crab Carcinus maenas were exposed to artificial cycles, applied in tidal antiphase, of pairs of the three major environmental variables that entrain circatidal rhythmicity in this species: salinity, temperature, and hydrostatic pressure. During entrainment, the observed locomotor activity patterns were dominated by exogenous responses to high pressure, low temperature, or low salinity. In subsequent constant conditions, many of the crabs showed bimodal circatidal rhythms, with peaks phased to the times of expected high-tide characteristics of high pressure, low temperature, or high salinity. Similar bimodal rhythms were induced by exposing freshly captured crabs, with free-running circatidal rhythms, to tidal antiphase cycles of each of the three environmental variables applied individually. The hypothesis that circatidal rhythmicity in this species is controlled by at least two separate circatidal oscillators, with differential sensitivities to specific cyclical environmental variables, is discussed.  相似文献
