Aim

To assess whether mammalian species introduced onto islands across the globe have evolved to exhibit body size patterns consistent with the ‘island rule,’, and to test an ecological explanation for body size evolution of insular mammals.

Location

Islands worldwide.

Methods

We assembled data on body mass, geographical characteristics (latitude, maximum elevation) and ecological communities (number of mammalian competitors, predators and prey) for 385 introduced populations across 285 islands, comprising 56 species of extant, non‐volant mammals. We used linear regression, ANCOVA and regression tree analyses to test whether introduced populations of mammals exhibit the island rule pattern, whether the degree of body size change increased with time in isolation and whether residual variation about the general trend can be attributed to the geographical and ecological characteristics of the islands.

Results

Introduced populations follow the predicted island rule trend, with body size shifts more pronounced for populations with greater residence times on the islands. Small mammals evolved to larger body sizes in lower latitudes and on islands with limited topographic relief. Consistent with our hypothesis on the ecology of evolution, body size of insular introduced populations was influenced by co‐occurring species of mammalian competitors, predators and prey.

Conclusion

The island rule is a pervasive pattern, exhibited across a broad span of geographical regions, taxa, time periods and, as evidenced here, for introduced as well as native mammals. Time in isolation impacts body size evolution profoundly. Body size shift of introduced mammals was much more pronounced with increasing residence times, yet far less than that exhibited by native, palaeo‐insular mammals (residence times > 10,000 years). Given the antiquity of many species introductions, it appears that much of what we view as the natural character and ecological dynamics of recent insular communities may have been rendered artefacts of ancient colonizations by humans and commensals.  相似文献

Aim

Whether intraspecific spatial patterns in body size are generalizable across species remains contentious, as well as the mechanisms underlying these patterns. Here we test several hypotheses explaining within-species body size variation in terrestrial vertebrates including the heat balance, seasonality, resource availability and water conservation hypotheses for ectotherms, and the heat conservation, heat dissipation, starvation resistance and resource availability hypotheses for endotherms.

Location

Global.

Time period

1970–2016.

Major taxa studied

Amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Methods

We collected 235,905 body size records for 2,229 species (amphibians = 36; reptiles = 81; birds = 1,545; mammals = 567) and performed a phylogenetic meta-analysis of intraspecific correlations between body size and environmental variables. We further tested whether correlations differ between migratory and non-migratory bird and mammal species, and between thermoregulating and thermoconforming ectotherms.

Results

For bird species, smaller intraspecific body size was associated with higher mean and maximum temperatures and lower resource seasonality. Size–environment relationships followed a similar pattern in resident and migratory birds, but the effect of resource availability on body size was slightly positive only for non-migratory birds. For mammals, we found that intraspecific body size was smaller with lower resource availability and seasonality, with this pattern being more evident in sedentary than migratory species. No clear size–environment relationships were found for reptiles and amphibians.

Main conclusions

Within-species body size variation across endotherms is explained by disparate underlying mechanisms for birds and mammals. Heat conservation (Bergmann's rule) and heat dissipation are the dominant processes explaining biogeographic intraspecific body size variation in birds, whereas in mammals, body size clines are mostly explained by the starvation resistance and resource availability hypotheses. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind species adaptations to the environment across their geographic distributions.  相似文献

Background

The vertebral heart score (VHS) is a method of evaluation of cardiac size well documented in domestic mammals and in other primate species, and the aim of this study was to determine the VHS in three species of Spider monkey.

Methods

In this retrospective study, right lateral radiographs of thirty clinically well animals were reviewed and VHS determined. The species included were Ateles fusciceps (n=17), Ateles hybridus (n=8) and Ateles paniscus (n=5).

Results

The VHS was found to vary between species and was 9.73±0.81 for A. fusciceps, 10.53±0.37 for A. hybridus and 10.45±0.27 for A. paniscus.

Conclusions

The observed values appear consistent with values determined for other primate species. There was statistically significant variation noted between species, and so VHS should be considered species‐specific in this genus. The values determined may be of benefit in objectively evaluating cardiac size in the species investigated.  相似文献

Aim

We investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of diversification among colourful and flightless weevils, the Pachyrhynchus orbifer complex, to test the stepping‐stone hypothesis of colonization across the Taiwan–Luzon volcanic belt.

Location

Southeast Asia.

Methods

The phylogeny of the P. orbifer complex was reconstructed from a multi‐locus data set of mitochondrial and nuclear genes using maximum likelihood in RAxML and Bayesian inference in MRBAYES. Likelihood‐based tests in CONSEL were used to evaluate alternative tree topologies. Divergence times were estimated in beast based on a range of mutation rates. Ancestral range and biogeographical history were reconstructed using Bayesian binary MCMC (BBM) methods in RASP and in BioGeoBEARS. Demographic histories were inferred using the extended Bayesian skyline plot (EBSP). Species boundaries were tested using BPP.

Results

The phylogeny of the P. orbifer complex indicated strong support for seven reciprocally monophyletic lineages grouped by current island boundaries (Camiguin, Fuga, Dalupiri, Calayan, Babuyan, Orchid and Yaeyama Islands), except for a sister Green + Itbayat lineage. Complex and stochastic colonization of P. orbifer was inferred to have involved both northward and southward directions with short‐ and long‐distance dispersal events, which are strongly inconsistent with the strict stepping‐stone hypothesis. Divergence time estimates for all extant island lineages (<1 Myr of Middle Pleistocene) are much more recent than the geological ages (22.4–1.7 Myr) and subaerial existence (c. 3 Myr) of the islands. The statistically delimited seven cryptic species imply that the diversity of Pachyrhynchus from small peripheral islands continues to be largely under‐estimated.

Main conclusions

The non‐linear, more complex spatial and temporal settings of the archipelago and stochastic dispersal were probable key factors shaping the colonization history of the P. orbifer complex. Speciation of the P. orbifer complex may have occurred only between islands, indicating that peripatric speciation through the founders of stochastic dispersals was the major evolutionary driver.  相似文献

Aim

Describe the main geo‐physical features of the various sorts of marine islands that are associated with the continents and consider how the ontogenetic pathways of each landmass type might have shaped the hosted biotas.

Location

Global.

Methods

Review of the literature that underpins understanding of the “continental” marine islands, particularly those publications with biological, geological, geophysical, oceanographical and palaeoceanographical foci.

Results

Based on their geo‐physical settings, islands with continental basements/close connections to the continents can be assigned to one of nine categories: shelf, shelf volcano, orogenic margin, continental arc, continental fore‐arc, rifted arc‐raft, isolated raft atoll, isolated block and micro‐continental terrane. As each functions in a distinctive manner, this must have strongly imprinted the native biotas.

Main conclusions

“Continental” marine islands can be allocated to one of nine groups based on their respective geo‐physical locations. When geological time is considered, then the unique histories of each insular landmass type will have played a critical role in moulding the land‐locked faunal assemblages that have amassed and evolved atop them. Researchers investigating insular biotas, particularly those exploring biodiversity growth, may wish to accommodate these insights.  相似文献

The use of quail meat and eggs has made this animal important in recent years, with its low cost and high yields. Glutathione S‐transferases (GST, E.C.2.5.1.18) are an important enzyme family, which play a critical role in detoxification system. In our study, GST was purified from quail liver tissue with 47.88‐fold purification and 12.33% recovery by glutathione agarose affinity chromatography. The purity of enzyme was checked by SDS‐PAGE method and showed a single band. In addition, inhibition effects of (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)‐2‐(4‐((E)‐3‐(aryl)acryloyl)phenyl)‐3a,4,7,7a‐tetrahydro‐1H‐4,7methanoisoindole‐1,3(2H)‐dion derivatives ( 1a–g ) were investigated on the enzyme activity. The inhibition parameters (IC50 and Ki values) were calculated for these compounds. IC50 values of these derivatives ( 1a–e ) were found as 23.00, 15.75, 115.50, 10.00, and 28.75 μM, respectively. Ki values of these derivatives ( 1a–e ) were calculated in the range of 3.04 ± 0.50 to 131.50 ± 32.50 μM. However, for f and g compounds, the inhibition effects on the enzyme were not found.  相似文献

Aim

To demonstrate a new and more general model of the species–area relationship that builds on traditional models, but includes the provision that richness may vary independently of island area on relatively small islands (the small island effect).

Location

We analysed species–area patterns for a broad diversity of insular biotas from aquatic and terrestrial archipelagoes.

Methods

We used breakpoint or piecewise regression methods by adding an additional term (the breakpoint transformation) to traditional species–area models. The resultant, more general, species–area model has three readily interpretable, biologically relevant parameters: (1) the upper limit of the small island effect (SIE), (2) an estimate of richness for relatively small islands and (3) the slope of the species–area relationship (in semi‐log or log–log space) for relatively large islands.

Results

The SIE, albeit of varying magnitude depending on the biotas in question, appeared to be a relatively common feature of the data sets we studied. The upper limit of the SIE tended to be highest for species groups with relatively high resource requirements and low dispersal abilities, and for biotas of more isolated archipelagoes.

Main conclusions

The breakpoint species–area model can be used to test for the significance, and to explore patterns of variation in small island effects, and to estimate slopes of the species–area (semi‐log or log–log) relationship after adjusting for SIE. Moreover, the breakpoint species–area model can be expanded to investigate three fundamentally different realms of the species–area relationship: (1) small islands where species richness varies independent of area, but with idiosyncratic differences among islands and with catastrophic events such as hurricanes, (2) islands beyond the upper limit of SIE where richness varies in a more deterministic and predictable manner with island area and associated, ecological factors and (3) islands large enough to provide the internal geographical isolation (large rivers, mountains and other barriers within islands) necessary for in situ speciation.

Background

A polarized light scattering technique was used to monitor the performance of a continuously operated foam fractionation process. The S 11 and S 12 parameters, elements of the light scattering matrix, combined together (S 11 +S 12) have been correlated with the bubble size and liquid content for the case of a freely draining foam. The performance of a foam fractionation column is known to have a strong dependence on the bubble size distribution and liquid hold up in foam. In this study the enrichment is used as a metric, representative of foam properties and column performance, and correlated to the S 11 +S 12 parameter.  相似文献

Seasonal effects of environmental variables on photosynthetic activity and secondary xylem formation provide data to demonstrate how environmental factors together with leaf ageing during the season control tree growth. In this study, we assessed physiological responses in photosynthetic behaviour to seasonal climate changes, and also identified seasonal differences in vascular traits within differentiating secondary xylem tissue from three diploid species of the taxonomically complex genus Sorbus. From sampling day 150, a clear physiological segregation of S. chamaemespilus from S. torminalis and S. aria was evident. The shrubby species S. chamaemespilus could be distinguished by a higher photosynthetic capacity between days 150 and 206. This was reflected in its associations with net CO2 assimilation rate (PN), maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), variable‐to‐initial fluorescence ratio (Fv/F0), potential electron acceptor capacity (‘area’) in multivariate space, and also its associations with log‐transformed vessel area and log‐transformed relative conductivity between days 239 and 268. The maximum segregation and differentiation among the examined Sorbus species was on sampling day 206. The largest differences between S. torminalis and S. aria were found on day 115, when the latter species clearly showed closer associations with high values of vessel density and transpiration (E). Sampling day clusters were arranged along an arch‐like gradient that reflected the positioning of the entire growing season in multivariate space. This arch‐like pattern was most apparent in the case of S. chamaemespilus, but was also observed in S. torminalis and S. aria.  相似文献

Questions

Can hemiparasitic Rhinanthus major originating from a local population suppress the competitive clonal grass Calamagrostis epigejos and reverse its expansion in species‐rich semi‐natural grasslands? Does sowing seeds of R. major facilitate restoration of target meadow vegetation? Is R. major more beneficial for biodiversity restoration/conservation than increased mowing intensity, a conventional measure to suppress C. epigejos?

Location

?ertoryje National Nature Reserve, Bílé Karpaty (White Carpathians) Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic.

Methods

We conducted a before‐after‐control‐impact experiment in meadow patches heavily infested by C. epigejos: eight blocks, each containing four plots with four treatment combinations: (1) traditional management, i.e. mowing once in summer, (2) mowing in summer and autumn (3) mowing in summer and seed sowing of R. major, (4) mowing in summer and autumn and seed sowing of R. major. Above‐ground biomass of C. epigejos and vegetation composition of each of the plots were monitored every year from 2013 to 2016. To assess the effects of treatments, we analysed biomass production of C. epigejos, herb layer cover and vegetation composition.

Results

Both sowing R. major and an additional autumn meadow cut significantly suppressed C. epigejos. Their effects were additive and of comparable size. Both treatments also had significant but markedly different effects on community composition. Rhinanthus major facilitated directional community composition change towards the regional Brachypodio‐Molinetum meadows. In contrast, increased mowing intensity significantly decreased frequency of threatened species, which however may have also been influenced by R. major.

Conclusions

Sowing of autochthonous R. major seeds was demonstrated as an efficient tool to suppress C. epigejos and facilitate community restoration. It can be combined with an additional meadow cut to further accelerate decline of the grass. The additional cut should however be used as a short‐term practice (1–2 years) only to minimize potential negative effects of its long‐term application on some threatened plant species. The effects of R. major are comparable to those of Rhinanthus alectorolophus reported previously. As a species occurring naturally in species‐rich dry grasslands, R. major has a broader and longer‐term application potential than R. alectorolophus in ecological restoration and conservation of these communities.  相似文献

A series of Matijin‐Su (MTS, (2S)‐2‐{[(2S)‐2‐benzamido‐3‐phenylpropanoyl]amino}‐3‐phenylpropyl acetate) derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their anti‐HBV and cytotoxic activities in vitro. Six compounds ( 4g , 4j , 5c , 5g , 5h and 5i ) showed significant inhibition against HBV DNA replication with the IC50 values in range of 2.18 – 8.55 μm , which were much lower than that of positive control lamivudine (IC50 82.42 μm ). In particular, compounds 5h (IC50 2.18 μm ; SI 151.59) and 5j (IC50 5.65 μm ; SI 51.16) displayed relatively low cytotoxicities, resulting in high SI values. Notably, besides the anti‐HBV DNA replication activity, compound 4j also exhibited more potent in vitro cytotoxic activity than 5‐fluorouracil in two hepatocellular carcinoma cell (HCC) lines (QGY‐7701 and SMMC‐7721), indicating that 4j may be a promising lead for the exploration of drugs with dual therapeutic effects on HBV infection and HBV‐induced HCC.  相似文献

Background

The set of extreme pathways (ExPa), {p i }, defines the convex basis vectors used for the mathematical characterization of the null space of the stoichiometric matrix for biochemical reaction networks. ExPa analysis has been used for a number of studies to determine properties of metabolic networks as well as to obtain insight into their physiological and functional states in silico. However, the number of ExPas, p = |{p i }|, grows with the size and complexity of the network being studied, and this poses a computational challenge. For this study, we investigated the relationship between the number of extreme pathways and simple network properties.  相似文献

Progressive body‐size dwarfing of animal populations is predicted under chronic mortality stress, such as that inflicted by human harvesting. However, empirical support for such declines in body size due to elevated mortality is lacking. In fact, the size of three macropodid species ─ the two grey kangaroo species, Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus, and the Red‐necked Wallaby, M. rufogriseus ─ appears to have increased since European settlement in Australia, despite these species being subjected to size‐selective harvesting over this period. To test whether this unexpected trend also characterises other species, we sought evidence of human‐induced body‐size changes in the two most widely distributed kangaroo species, the Euro Macropus robustus and Red Kangaroo M. rufus, from the late 19th Century onwards. Spatial autoregressive models controlling for age, sex and island effects were first used to identify environmental predictors of body size and to evaluate multi‐causal explanations for spatial body‐size patterns. Primary productivity emerged as the key driver of body size in both species, while heat conservation was supported as a further mechanism explaining the large body size of M. robustus in cold climatic regions. After controlling for these environmental factors, we find that the size of M. rufus has been stable over time and limited support for a small increase in the size of M. robustus. Hence, there is no empirical evidence that contemporary size‐selective harvesting has reduced body size in these species. Rather, the latter result supports the possibility that pasture improvement and/or dingo control (and associated reduction in predation pressure) facilitated body‐size increases following European settlement in Australia.  相似文献

Background

Anthropogenic habitat modifications have led to the extinction of many species and have favoured the expansion of others. Nonetheless, the possible role of humans as a diversifying force in vertebrate evolution has rarely been considered, especially for species with long generation times. We examine the influence that humans have had on the colonization and phenotypic and genetic differentiation of an insular population of a long-lived raptor species, the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus).  相似文献

Abstract

Potentially bioactive N-(aminoalkyl)lactamic amino acids and esters were synthesized in satisfactory to good yields by SNAr reactions of aromatic acids with N-(3-aminopropyl)lactams followed by esterification with tertiary amino alcohols. The addition–elimination SNAr mechanism was confirmed by NMR and MS measurements.  相似文献

Others have shown that exposing oocytes to high levels of (10–20 mM) causes a paradoxical fall in intracellular pH (pHi), whereas low levels (e.g., 0.5 mM) cause little pHi change. Here we monitored pHi and extracellular surface pH (pHS) while exposing oocytes to 5 or 0.5 mM NH3/NH4 +. We confirm that 5 mM causes a paradoxical pHi fall (−ΔpHi ≅ 0.2), but also observe an abrupt pHS fall (−ΔpHS ≅ 0.2)—indicative of NH3 influx—followed by a slow decay. Reducing [NH3/NH4 +] to 0.5 mM minimizes pHi changes but maintains pHS changes at a reduced magnitude. Expressing AmtB (bacterial Rh homologue) exaggerates −ΔpHS at both levels. During removal of 0.5 or 5 mM NH3/NH4 +, failure of pHS to markedly overshoot bulk extracellular pH implies little NH3 efflux and, thus, little free cytosolic NH3/NH4 +. A new analysis of the effects of NH3 vs. NH4 + fluxes on pHS and pHi indicates that (a) NH3 rather than NH4 + fluxes dominate pHi and pHS changes and (b) oocytes dispose of most incoming NH3. NMR studies of oocytes exposed to 15N-labeled show no significant formation of glutamine but substantial accumulation in what is likely an acid intracellular compartment. In conclusion, parallel measurements of pHi and pHS demonstrate that NH3 flows across the plasma membrane and provide new insights into how a protein molecule in the plasma membrane—AmtB—enhances the flux of a gas across a biological membrane.

European Pharmacopoeia accepts two equivalent species Solidago canadensis L. and Sgigantea Aiton as goldenrod (Solidaginis herba). We compared phytochemical profile of both species from invasive populations in Poland. Further, we compared in vitro antimutagenic and antioxidant activities of solvent extracts from aerial (AP) and underground parts (UP). In Sgigantea, flavonoid profile was dominated by quercetin glycosides, with quercitrin as the major compound. In Scanadensis, quercetin and kaempferol rutinosides were two major constituents. Caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) were less diverse with 5‐CQA as a main compound. In UP, over 20 putative diterpenoids were detected, mostly unidentified. Several CQAs were present in higher amounts than in AP. Antioxidant and antimutagenic activities were different between species and organs, with the strongest inhibition of lipid peroxidation by Et2O and AcOEt fractions from AP of both species (IC50 13.33 – 16.89 μg/mL) and BuOH fraction from Sgigantea UP (IC50 = 13.32 μg/mL). Chemical mutagenesis was completely inhibited by non‐polar fractions, but oxidative mutagenesis was inhibited up to 35% only by Scanadensis. No clear relationship was found between chemical profiles and antimutagenic activity. In conclusion, both species have diverse activity and their phytochemical profiles should be considered in quality evaluation. UP of these weeds can also provide potential chemopreventive substances for further studies.  相似文献

Connections among species-abundance (i-m i ), species-frequency (i-F i ), and species-sample size (S n -n) relationships were examined on the basis of the mapping data of a natural forest in Thailand. The spatial distribution of individual trees without any discrimination of species was nearly random. Provided that the spatial distribution of each species was random, thei-m i and thei-F i relationship was reconstructed from each other in terms of the total number of species (S) and the total number of individuals (N) in the data. The number of species (S n ) in a subsample consisting ofn individuals was then obtained from thei-F i relationship. Logarithm ofS n increased with logn and showed a convex curve through the origin. The values of diversity indices based onN andS(orn andS n ) were affected by sample size. These trends were further examined on the basis of 944 data sets of biotic communities and three mathematical models of anS-N relationship. The properties of species-area relation were discussed in the light of these results.  相似文献

To establish systemic infections, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) requires Salmonella pathogenicity island 2 (SPI‐2) to survive and replicate within macrophages. High expression of many SPI‐2 genes during the entire intracellular growth period within macrophages is essential, as it contributes to the formation of Salmonella‐containing vacuole and bacterial replication. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying the sustained induction of SPI‐2 within macrophages are not fully understood. Here, we revealed a time‐dependent regulation of SPI‐2 expression mediated by a novel regulator PagR (STM2345) in response to the low Mg2+ and low phosphate (Pi) signals, which ensured the high induction of SPI‐2 during the entire intramacrophage growth period. Deletion of pagR results in reduced bacterial replication in macrophages and attenuation of systemic virulence in mice. The effects of pagR on virulence are dependent on upregulating the expression of slyA, a regulator of SPI‐2. At the early (0–4 hr) and later (after 4 hr) stage post‐infection of macrophages, pagR is induced by the low Pi via PhoB/R two‐component systems and low Mg2+ via PhoP/Q systems, respectively. Collectively, our findings revealed that the PagR‐mediated regulatory mechanism contributes to the precise and sustained activation of SPI‐2 genes within macrophages, which is essential for S. Typhimurium systemic virulence.  相似文献
