Oryctes rhinoceros adults stopped feeding and flew less frequently, and the males mated less often after they became infected with the baculovirus of Oryctes. Monitoring the larval and adult population in Western Samoa over several years gave evidence that the incidence of the virus is dependent on the density of the O. rhinoceros population. Male beetles were more frequently infected than female bettles. Adding more virus-infected beetles to the O. rhinoceros populations of Nukunonu Atoll, where the virus had become established 5 years earlier, reduced the population significantly. The data indicated that the reduction was caused mainly by a decrease in the number of eggs deposited.

Rhabdionvirus oryctes multiplies in adults of Oryctes rhinoceros. Adults and larvae of O. rhinoceros showed no significant difference in their susceptibility to the virus when it was inoculated into the hemocoel. Adults, collected from the natural population in Western Samoa, were found to be frequently infected with Rhabdionvirus. In the laboratory the infected adults had a shorter life-span and laid fewer eggs than the noninfected ones. Infected adults excreted virus material into the surrounding medium. This suggests a possible means of transmission of the virus in the field.

The viral pathogen Rhabdionvirus oryctes [ROV] was found to be widespread in the population of Oryctes rhinoceros in Western Samoa. About 3% of the larvae and 35% of the adults were infected with ROV. Larval breeding sites more frequently contained ROV-infected insects if the sites were occupied by two broods instead of one and if there was a high density of breeding in the area. Females infected with ROV visited the breeding sites less frequently for egg-laying than healthy females. The male adults, as they increased in age, were found to be more frequently infected with ROV, but the young female adults were more frequently infected than very young or old females. The ROV-infections in adults apparently play a more important role in suppressing the O. rhinoceros population than those of larvae.

Abstract.
  • 1 Males and females of Oryctes rhinoceros (L.), a serious pest of coconut palms, congregate in decaying coconut trunks to mate, oviposit and prepare the wood for the young larvae. A baculovirus disease is often transmitted from beetle to beetle in this environment and transmission to and from larvae probably also occurs.
  • 2 Young beetles are mainly found feeding on palms, where they also frequently contract the virus disease, presumably through mating with diseased partners.
  • 3 Monitoring beetle populations in the Philippines with attractant traps and by collections from palms showed seasonal fluctuations which were often inversely correlated with the incidence of the virus disease. Disease prevalence matched closely the proportion of females in the population. Possible explanations for this correlation and for the seasonality of the disease prevalence are outlined.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine effects of cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus on diapausing Heliothis virescens. Most virus-infected individuals died in the larval stage. Infected pupae yielded as many moths as healthy. Females from surviving virus-infected larvae produced fewer eggs than those from healthy larvae, but there was no statistical difference in longevity of adults between healthy and infected groups. Infected moths yielded lower than normal quantities of extracted fatty acids.

1. Experiments were carried out to investigate the incidence of cannibalism throughout the larval development of the noctuid moth Spodoptera frugiperda, and to examine the risk of infection from consuming conspecifics infected with a nuclear polyhedrosis virus (SfNPV). 2. Cannibalism was observed commonly even when food was not limiting, but occurred more frequently at low food quantities and/or high rearing densities. The sex of the larvae had no effect on the incidence of cannibalistic behaviour, however the probability of cannibalism occurring was affected by larval stage. The frequency of cannibalism was significantly higher among fifth- and sixth-instar larvae than among earlier instars, and larvae were more likely to consume younger conspecifics than larvae of the same stage. 3. Fifth-instar larvae offered fourth-instar victims fed equally on healthy larvae, virus-infected larvae (2 days post-infection), uninfected corpses, and virus-killed corpses (6 days post-infection). Horizontal transmission of SfNPV was only recorded in larvae offered virus-killed corpses, however, and total mortality in this treatment was only 32%. 4. In a similar experiment, fourth-instar larvae avoided cannibalising virus-killed corpses. Horizontal transmission of SfNPV was recorded in fourth-instar larvae that consumed 2-day post-infected larvae. The low incidence of cannibalism observed in fourth-instar larvae, however, suggests that this is unlikely to provide an important route for the transmission of SfNPV.

Adults of Heliothis virescens infected with a cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV) produced healthy offspring when their eggs were surface sterilized with either 15% formaldehyde or 0.2% sodium hypochlorite solution. Larvae from infected parents (1) cultured on a vitamin-deficient medium, (2) exposed to cold treatment (5°C, 24 hr), or (3) as progeny of adults from diapaused infected pupae, produced the same number of infected individuals as larvae reared in the customary way. Field studies indicated that the percent of CPV infection in larvae originating from virus-infected parents was density dependent.

Shortly prior to death, many species of Lepidoptera infected with nucleopolyhedrovirus climb upwards on the host plant. This results in improved dissemination of viral occlusion bodies over plant foliage and an increased probability of transmission to healthy conspecific larvae. Following applications of Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus for control of Spodoptera exigua on greenhouse-grown sweet pepper crops, necrophagy was observed by healthy S. exigua larvae that fed on virus-killed conspecifics. We examined whether this risky behavior was induced by olfactory or phagostimulant compounds associated with infected cadavers. Laboratory choice tests and olfactometer studies, involving infected and non-infected cadavers placed on spinach leaf discs, revealed no evidence for greater attraction of healthy larvae to virus-killed over non-infected cadavers. Physical contact or feeding on infected cadavers resulted in a very high incidence of transmission (82–93% lethal disease). Observations on the behavior of S. exigua larvae on pepper plants revealed that infected insects died on the uppermost 10% of foliage and closer to the plant stem than healthy conspecifics of the same stage, which we considered clear evidence of baculovirus-induced climbing behavior. Healthy larvae that subsequently foraged on the plant were more frequently observed closer to the infected than the non-infected cadaver. Healthy larvae also encountered and fed on infected cadavers significantly more frequently and more rapidly than larvae that fed on non-infected cadavers. Intraspecific necrophagy on infected cadavers invariably resulted in virus transmission and death of the necrophagous insect. We conclude that, in addition to improving the dissemination of virus particles over plant foliage, baculovirus-induced climbing behavior increases the incidence of intraspecific necrophagy in S. exigua, which is the most efficient mechanism of transmission of this lethal pathogen.

在室内观察了小菜蛾颗粒体病毒PlutellaxylostellaGranulosisVirus(RxGV)在小菜蛾种群水平上可能的垂直传播途径。结果表明 :(1 )上代小菜蛾Plutellaxylostella(L .)

The effect of a nuclear polyhedrosis virus on the relationship between Trichoplusia ni and the parasite, Hyposoter exiguae, was investigated to determine if the virus could invade and multiply in the tissues of the parasites, if parasites which emerged from virus-infected T. ni larvae had normal emergence, fecundity, and longevity, and if the parasite could serve as a vector for the virus. Light microscopy revealed particles which appeared to be polyhedra within the lumen of the midgut of parasite larvae from virus-infected hosts. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of polyhedra and free virions within the midgut of the larvae. Polyhedra or free virions were never found within any parasite tissues. Parasite larvae within hosts exposed to virus before parasitization perished when their hosts died of virus infection. Parasite larvae in hosts exposed to virus after parasitization completed their development before their hosts died of virus infection. The proportion of parasites which survived increased as the time between host parasitization and host virus exposure increased. Parasite larvae which developed in hosts exposed to the virus soon after parasitization spent significantly less time in their hosts than did parasites which developed in noninfected hosts. There was no significant difference in time spent in the pupal stage, percent adult emergence, adult longevity with and without food and water, and fecundity of parasites which developed in virus-infected hosts and those which developed in noninfected hosts. Female parasites laid as many eggs in virus-infected hosts as they did in noninfected hosts. Sixty percent of the female parasites which oviposited in virus-infected hosts vectored infective doses of virus to an average of 6% of the healthy hosts subsequently exposed to them. None of the healthy host larvae exposed to male parasites which had been exposed to virus-infected host larvae became infected with the virus. Forty percent of the female parasites which developed in virus-infected hosts transmitted infective doses of the virus to an average of 65% of the healthy host larvae exposed to them. Ninety percent of the male parasites which developed in virus-infected hosts transferred infective doses of the virus to an average of 21% of the healthy host larvae exposed to them.

Tipula iridescent virus (TIV) was inoculated into Tipula oleracea larvae via different routes. It was found to be much more infective when it was injected into the hemocoel than when it was ingested by the larvae.T. oleracea embryos did not become infected when eggs were laid in agar containing TIV, and there was no evidence that larvae can become infected via the spiracles or that transovum transmission occurs. It is suggested that TIV is transmitted principally by cannibalism, including killing and ingesting infected larvae, and finding dead infected larvae and ingesting them. It is proposed that a new generation becomes infected by first-instar larvae feeding upon infected fourth-instar larvae which have survived from the previous generation.

The potential of a strain of Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Clavicipitaceae) obtained from a naturally infected Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) pupa as a biological control agent against this weevil was evaluated both in the laboratory and in semi-field assays. Laboratory results indicate that this strain of B. bassiana can infect eggs, larvae and adults of R. ferrugineus (LC50 from 6.3 × 107 to 3.0 × 109 conidia per ml). However, mortality was not the only indicator of treatment efficacy because adults of either sex inoculated with the fungus efficiently transmitted the disease to untreated adults of the opposite sex, with male-to-female and female-to-male rates of transmission of 55% and 60%, respectively. In addition, treatment with B. bassiana significantly reduced fecundity (up to 62.6%) and egg hatching (32.8%) in pairing combinations with fungus-challenged males, females or both sexes. Likewise, 30-35% increase in larval mortality was observed in larvae obtained from eggs from fungus-challenged females or from untreated females coupled with inoculated males, resulting in an overall 78% progeny reduction. Semi-field preventive assays on potted 5-year old Phoenix canariensis palms, with efficacies up to 85.7%, confirmed the potential of this strain as a biological control agent against R. ferrugineus.

The effects of Aedes Densovirus (AeDNV) infections on survival, fertility, fecundity and vertical transmission in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) were measured in laboratories in Kiev, Ukraine and Colorado, USA and incorporated into a predictive model of the effects of AeDNV on vector capacity. Adult lifespan and daily survival were reduced in AeDNV infected mosquitoes. This effect was dependent on the dose of the virus. Infected females had decreased fecundity. The oviposition rate was less in infected females and the hatch rate declined in eggs laid by infected females. The amounts of AeDNV in infected females and the infection rate of their offspring were measured with real-time PCR. The average filial transmission rate was ∼70% and larval infection rates from infected females varied between 42 and 62%. Vertically infected larvae, and individual eggs contained ∼1 × 105 AeDNV genome equivalents (geq). Modeling the effects of AeDNV infection on Ae. aegypti populations suggested a large decrease in the numbers of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults arising from infected mothers and suggested that AeDNV treatment of larvae could cause up to a 76% reduction of infectious mosquito days.

Parasites often produce large numbers of offspring within their hosts. High parasite burdens are thought to be important for parasite transmission, but can also lower host fitness. We studied the protozoan Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, a common parasite of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), to quantify the benefits of high parasite burdens for parasite transmission. This parasite is transmitted vertically when females scatter spores onto eggs and host plant leaves during oviposition; spores can also be transmitted between mating adults. Monarch larvae were experimentally infected and emerging adult females were mated and monitored in individual outdoor field cages. We provided females with fresh host plant material daily and quantified their lifespan and lifetime fecundity. Parasite transmission was measured by counting the numbers of parasite spores transferred to eggs and host plant leaves. We also quantified spores transferred from infected females to their mating partners. Infected monarchs had shorter lifespans and lower lifetime fecundity than uninfected monarchs. Among infected females, those with higher parasite loads transmitted more parasite spores to their eggs and to host plant leaves. There was also a trend for females with greater parasite loads to transmit more spores to their mating partners. These results demonstrate that high parasite loads on infected butterflies confer a strong fitness advantage to the parasite by increasing between-host transmission.

The median infectious concentration (IC50) of a nuclear-polyhedrosis virus of the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea, in soil was 7.14×107 polyhedra per gram of soil. The number of virus-killed larvae equivalent to IC50 decreased with the advance of the larval instar from 22 first-instar to 0.04 seventh-instar larvae per gram of soil. The degree of virus contamination of the surface soil in an area where the virus disease had occurred naturally in host populations was estimated to be as high as IC50 on the basis of soil bioassays. Nearly 1000 virus-killed seventh-instar larvae/m2 were necessary to obtain such extensive soil contamination. The possibility of the occurrence of so many virus-killed cadavers in the study area was discussed in relation with the past records of epizootics and host population trends. The distribution of the fallen leaves of large trees favorable to the fall webworm, such as plane and poplar trees, correlated with that of the nuclear-polyhedrosis virus in the soil.

The infestation levels of O. rhinoceros were investigated in the oil palm trunk heaps in three replanting blocks (Blocks A, B and C) at Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia. These blocks had different densities of pheromone trapping: high (11 traps per ha, Block B), normal (1 trap per 2 ha, Block C), while no pheromone trapping was conducted in (Block A. Without pheromone trapping, the infestation levels of O. rhinoceros can reach a maximum density of between 25 to 50 individuals per m2 (IPMS). The O. rhinoceros population was still detected in the heaps up to more than two years (at 26 months after replanting). With high density trapping, infestation levels were maintained below 10 IPMS and was not detected in the heaps after a period of 16 months of replanting. In the normal trapping density, the population was also maintained below 10 IPMS but had sustained itself in the heaps for up to 24 months. The mortality factors associated with the larval stages sampled within these replanting blocks was determined by visual symptoms with subsequent verification with microbial analysis. The analysis was narrowed down to detect only bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis and B. popillae), virus (Oryctes virus) and fungus (Metarhizium). In Block A, the population of O. rhinoceros in the trunks was reduced drastically at 14 months after replanting (MAR), which could be due to the high mortality (88%) of the third instar larvae, 3 months earlier. In Block B, the percentage mortality for the larval stage was always highest at the third instars (between 21–82%). In Block C however, the mortality of the third instars was low, never exceeding 35%. In these sampling blocks, the infection of Metarhizium seem to be less dominant compared to virus or bacteria The k factor analysis indicates density dependence among the third instar larvae had contributed to the change in its population density in Block A. Therefore, with proper manipulation of pheromone traps and targeted application of disease agents (i.e virus, fungus and bacteria), the population of O. rhinoceros can be managed more effectively in an oil palm replanting.

The oviposition behaviour of the water-lily beetle Galerucella nymphaeae was examined. This species is a specialist herbivore on the floating leaves of nymphaeids Nymphaeaceae and especially on the yellow water-lily, Nuphar lutea. Females lay their eggs in clutches on the leaves, and after hatching, the larvae feed on the leaves. The quality of the leaves decreases quickly after the larvae hatch, and eventually the leaves will sink below the water surface, whereupon the eggs, 1st-instar larvae and pupae are killed by drowning. The influence of conspecific eggs, larvae and feeding tracks on the oviposition preferences of the beetles was tested. Females were allowed to choose between fresh leaves and leaves with conspecific eggs and larvae as well as between leaves with larvae and leaves with feeding tracks but no larvae. An attempt was also made to determine whether eggs and larvae affect the oviposition rate of females when they are not given the opportunity to oviposit on untouched leaves. The results indicate that females tended to avoid leaves with conspecific larvae or to exhibit a decreased oviposition rate on such leaves. Females also avoided conspecific eggs, although the oviposition rate was not influenced by the presence of conspecific eggs. When females were allowed to choose between leaves with larvae and leaves with feeding tracks, possible discrimination against leaves with larvae just fails to reach the 5% level.

Previous research on predator-induced phenotypic plasticity mostly focused on responses in morphology, developmental time and/or behaviour during early life stages, but the potential significance of anticipatory parental responses has been investigated less often. In this study I examined behavioural and maternal responses of gravid female smooth newts, Lissotriton vulgaris, in the presence of chemical cues originating from invertebrate predators, Acilius sulcatus water beetles and Aeshna cyanea dragonfly larvae. More specifically, I tested the extent of oviposition preference, plasticity in egg-wrapping behaviour and plasticity in egg size when females had the possibility to lay eggs at oviposition sites with and without predator cues during overnight trials. I found that individuals did not avoid laying eggs in the environment with predator cues; however, individuals that deposited eggs into both environments adjusted the size of the laid eggs to the perceived environment. Females deposited larger eggs earlier in the season but egg size decreased with time in the absence of predator cues, whereas individuals laid eggs of average size throughout the investigated reproductive period when such cues were present. Also, egg size was found to be positively related to hatching success. Individuals did not adjust their wrapping behaviour to the presence of predator cues, but females differed in the extent of egg-wrapping between ponds. Females’ body mass and tail depth were also different between ponds, whereas their body size was positively associated with egg size. According to these results, female smooth newts have the potential to exhibit activational plasticity and invest differently into eggs depending on temporal and environmental factors. Such an anticipatory response may contribute to the success of this caudate species under a wide range of predator regimes at its natural breeding habitats.

Some properties of cocksfoot mottle virus
Cocksfoot mottle virus (CFMV) was transmitted by manual inoculation of sap to cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), wheat, oats and barley, but not to nineteen other monocotyledonous and thirteen dicotyledonous plant species. The virus was also transmitted by cereal leaf beetles (Lema melanopa L.). Adult beetles infected plants more frequently than larvae, and remained infective for up to 2 weeks after they had fed on infected plants. Seed from infected cocksfoot and oat plants produced virus-free seedlings. The infectivity of sap was lost during 10 min. at 65° C., and 2 weeks at 20° C., but survived many months at — 15° C. Purified virus preparations, made by various methods, contained numerous nearly spherical particles, about 30 mμ in diameter. In electron micrographs some of the particles were penetrated by negative stain though most appeared intact. However, all the particles migrated together in a centrifugal (sedimentation coefficient = 118 S) or electrophoretic field. The ultraviolet absorption spectrum, and the phosphorus and nitrogen contents of the virus preparations, were typical of a nucleoprotein containing about 25 % nucleic acid. Serological tests failed to show any relationship between CFMV and eleven other viruses with particles of similar shape and size.
