The aim of this study was to determine the toxicity of niclosamide (Bayluscide (R)) on Melanoides tuberculata and Biomphalaria glabrata under laboratory conditions. The latter species is the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni (Sambon 1917). M. tuberculata was successfully used as competitor of B. glabrata in biological control programs in French West Indies. Both molluscicide and biological control using M. tuberculata have proved to be successful in reducing the population density of B. glabrata. The associated use of molluscicide in this area would be an effective measure if M. tuberculata were less susceptibility to the molluscicide than B. glabrata. Three hundreds individuals each of B. glabrata and of M. tuberculata, collected in Sumidouro, State of Rio de Janeiro, were used in the experiment. The molluscs were exposed to 14 different concentrations of niclosamide as recommended by the World Health Organization. Probit analysis was used to determine the LC 50 and LC 90. The LC 50 and LC 90 values for B. glabrata were 0.077 mg/l and 0.175 mg/l, respectively and the LC 50 and LC 90 values for M. tuberculata were 0.082 mg/l and 0.221 mg/l respectively. As the lethal concentrations of niclosamide were approximately the same to both species, this could be a disadvantage when controlling B. glabrata with niclosamide in an area of M. tuberculata occurrence. It might therefore be preferable to utilize the latex extracted from the Euphorbia splendens, which presented a much higher efficiency for B. glabrata than to M. tuberculata.  相似文献

The reproductive activity of Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii latex was evaluated. Parameters related to fecundity and fertility were observed. The snails were exposed to the LD50 (1 mg/l) of crude latex. At the first week post exposure (p.e.), the egg laying was reduced. After the fourth week p.e., an increase of the number of eggs/snail occurred. The results showed a marked reduction in the hatching of the snails, revealing an interference of latex exposure with the reproductive process of B. glabrata of E. splendens var. hislopii. The LD50 of the latex may be used as an alternative method to control the size of the populations of B. glabrata in field.  相似文献

Molluscides have been used as one of the strategies to control schistosomiasis. Many plant extracts with molluscidal effects have been tested, but the action of the latex of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii is considered the most promising because it meets the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The objective of this study was to determine the lethal dose and identify the effects of the different doses of latex of E. splendens var. hislopii on the physiology of Biomphalaria glabrata submitted to treatment for 24 h. The concentrations of glucose, uric acid and total proteins in the hemolymph and of glycogen in the digestive gland and cephalopodal mass were determined. The LD50 value was 1 mg/l. The highest escape index was found to be at a concentration of 0.6 mg/l. The results showed that the latex of E. splendens var. hislopii caused a sharp reduction in the reserves of glycogen in the digestive gland and elevation of the protein content in the hemolymph of B. glabrata.  相似文献

An aqueous solution of the latex of "coroa de cristo" (Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii) showed molluscicide action (LD90) at a concentration lower than 0.5 ppm on Biomphalaria glabrata and B. tenagophila reared in laboratory and at a concentration lower than 4.0 ppm for field B. tenagophila.  相似文献

The latex of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii, at concentrations between 5 to 12 mg/l, kills 100% of the population of Biomphalaria glabrata in a lentic habitat, after 24 h. The lyophilized latex, stocked for 18 months, killed only 34.2% of the snails, at the concentration of 5 mg/l, and 96.0% at 12 mg/l. No lethal effect was observed among Pomacea haustrum exposed to the same concentrations of the molluscicide.  相似文献

The biological control of Biomphalaria glabrata, intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, is one the accepted options to fight schistosomiasis. One of the most promising candidates to control B. glabrata is the snail Melanoides tuberculata, a potential competitor. However, the mechanisms of interaction between the two species are not clear. Our objective is to determine if M. tuberculata indeed compete with B. glabrata, using two laboratory experiments. In Experiment 1, we tested the effect of the presence of M. tuberculata on the fecundity and mortality rates of B. glabrata. In Experiment 2, we tested if there was a direct or indirect interaction between the two species. In Experiment 1, M. tuberculata was eliminated after the peak in reproductive activity of B. glabrata. In Experiment 2, B. glabrata produced more egg masses when raised with M. tuberculata. The conditions leading to this unexpected positive effect of M. tuberculata on the fecundity of B. glabrata need further clarification, but emphasize that detailed studies of the interaction between these species in the conditions of the local environment should be considered.  相似文献

The molluscicidal evaluation of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii (Crown of thorns) against Lymnaea columella snails, intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, in irrigation ditches of the Pisciculture Station at Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, was studied under limited field conditions. An aqueous solution of the latex at 5 mg/l was tested in two irrigation ditches (experimental and control ditches), after initial sampling of the snail population present. Twenty-four hours after application of the product, it was verified that 97.4% of free L. columella snails and 100% of snails of the same species captive in cages and used as sentinels at three points equidistant from the application site in the experimental ditch, died. For Biomphalaria tenagophila and Melanoides tuberculata snails, present in the experimental ditch, the mortality was 100%, for the species Pomacea spp. the mortality was 40%. No mortality was verified in the free mollusks, or in the sentinels in the ditch used as control. E. splendens var. hislopii latex is thus an efficient natural molluscicide, which may be used as an alternative control agent against L. columella.  相似文献

An aqueous solution of the latex of Euphorbia tirucalli collected at sites receiving large amounts of sunlight showed molluscicide action on Biomphalaria glabrata, with LD50 obtained at the concentration of 28,0 ppm and LD90 at the concentration of 85,0 ppm. The toxicity of the product for fish was similar to that of Bayluscide and of copper sulfate used for comparison. However, the wide distribution of the plant, its easy propagation and the simple procedure for extraction of the active substance, which is biodegradable, favor "avelós" as a promising agent in the control of schistosomiasis.  相似文献

Introductions of four species of freshwater snails occurred between 1972 and 1996 onto Guadeloupe Island. Two of them, Melanoides tuberculata and Marisa cornuarietis, were subsequently used as biological control agents against Biomphalaria glabrata, the snail intermediate host of intestinal schistosomiasis. In 1996, a general survey was carried out in 134 sites which had already been investigated in 1972. The total number of mollusc species had increased from 19 to 21. Site numbers housing B. glabrata and two other species had strongly declined. This decline may be mainly attributed to a competitive displacement by M. tuberculata and M. cornuarietis as illustrated by several biological control programmes. There were no changes in the remainder of the malacological fauna.  相似文献

Molluscicidal properties of some species of Annona.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In search for plant molluscicides for the vector control of schistosomiasis, ethanolic extracts from different parts of six species of the Annonaceae family were evaluated against adult forms and egg masses of Biomphalaria glabrata. Results from accurate experiments indicate that the majority of analyzed extracts possess properties lethal to Biomphalaria glabrata, some of them with significant LD90 values (< 20 ppm), as showed for Annona crassiflora M: [pulp and seed (LD50 = 13.21), steem (2.34), root bark (3.79)], Annona glabra L. [seed (17.02)], Annona muricata [leaf (8.75)]. Emphasis is held mainly into Annona muricata L. (leaf) and Annona squamosa Veil. (root) for presenting additional toxicity toward snail egg masses.  相似文献

Abstract-Molluscicidal bioassays and electrochemical studies (measurement of first wave reduction potential, Epcl) were performed on several synthetic nitroaromatics, in relation to possible correlation between biological activity, redox potential and structural effects. Five of them presented a significant molluscicidal activity on Biomphalaria glabrata (LD50 < 20 ppm). The Epc1 values ranged from -0.532 to -0.857 V versus Ag/AgCl (0.1 M) (-0.260 to -0.585 V versus NHE), all of them, in the favorable range for reduction in vivo. Data comparison between Epc1 and molluscicidal activity indicates that the presence of the electroactive nitro group is important for the biological activity. Correlation with redox potential, however, was not evident. Structural effects seem to be the most important parameter. Higher activity is noticeable for phenols, including the para-nitro azo or hydrazo-containing compounds. No activity was observed for compounds having the benzylic substituent in meta position to the nitro group. These results suggest that activity undoubtedly involves more than reduction characteristics and that the possible formation of electrophilic species, after nitro reduction, can play an important role in molluscicidal activity against B. glabrata.  相似文献

A buthanol extract of Phytolacca dodecandra (type 44) obtained from Ethiopia berries, was tested as molluscicide in our laboratory and in the field. The lethal dose (LD90) for adult snails, newly hatched and egg-masses of Biomphalaria glabrata, in 24 hours exposure, were of 4.5, 23.0 and 102.0 ppm respectively. The LD90 for the fish Lebistes reticulatus was of 2.0 ppm. These results are similar to those of Lemma (1984) in Ethiopia. In two water ponds treated with 10 ppm of the buthanol extract or 3 ppm of niclosamide the mortality rates of B. glabrata were of 84.6 and 100.0%, respectively. Both treatments were toxic for L. reticulatus in the field trials. The possibility of using molluscicides derived from plants is discussed as an alternative for treatment of schistosomiasis foci in Brazil.  相似文献

In a continuing search for new compounds for the control of the vectors of schistosomiasis, we have tested the activity of some Brazilian medicinal plants as sources of molluscicidal natural compounds, using two molluscicidal bioassays. Twenty-seven crude extracts, from twenty-six species belonging to nineteen families, were tested. Seven extracts showed significant molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria glabrata adults with DL50 values of less than 50 ppm, and five of them were very active in the test using egg masses. The species most active against B. glabrata adults (LD50 value = 3.65 ppm) and their egg masses (LD50 value = 0.13 ppm) was Derris sp. Annona muricata [LD50 value (adult) = 11.86 ppm and LD50 value (egg) = 49.62 ppm], Jatropha elliptica (from Goiás state) [LD50 value (adult) = 24.80 ppm and LD50 value (egg) = 3.03 ppm] and Renealmia exaltata [LD50 value (adult) = 28.03 ppm and LD50 value (egg) = 21.67 ppm], were also considered promising molluscicidal plants.  相似文献

The latex action of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii (Christ's Crown) against snails Lymnaea columella, intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, derived from irrigation ditches of the Station of Pisciculture at Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, was studied in the laboratory. Lab bioassays, using aqueous solutions of the latex, varying between 0.1 and 10 mg/l, have proven molluscicidal activity of the product collected on the same day the tests were performed, during the four seasons of the year, finding the following lethal concentrations (LC90): 1.51 mg/l in the spring; 0.55 mg/l in the summer; 0.74 mg/l in the fall and 0.93 mg/l in winter, after 24 h exposure of the snails, showing significant differences among the seasons of the year (ANOVA test, F = 11.01, G.L.= 3/33, p < 0.05), as well as among the concentrations (ANOVA test, F = 27.38, G.L.= 11/33, p < 0.05). In the summer, mortality reached 100% from concentration at 0.6 mg/l, the same during fall and in winter as of 1 mg/l, while in spring it only reached 100% mortality as of 2 mg/l. Mortality in the controls was low, reaching 5% in the summer and winter and 10% in the fall and spring. None of the samples died. During the assay, with an aqueous solution of the latex at a concentration of 5 mg/l, in order to check the time of duration of the product effect, in the laboratory, it was observed that the molluscicidal activity remained stable up to the 15th day after the beginning of the test with 100% mortality of L. columella, gradually losing its effect until the 23rd day, when we no longer observed animal mortality. In the control group, there was a random daily variation in mortality rate ranging 0-50% after 48 h of observation for 30 days.  相似文献

Leaf extracts of Euphorbia conspicua (Euphorbiaceae), together with the latex and fractions derived therefrom, were evaluated for their molluscicidal and cercaricidal activities and their toxicities to brine shrimps. Whilst the leaf extracts were inactive against Biomphalaria glabrata, the latex, its triterpenic fraction and irritant fractions I and II exhibited high activities against adult snails with LC90 values of 4.87, 10.55, 0.64 and 0.10 microg/mL, respectively. The latex and its derived fractions were considered lethal to the cercaria of Schistosoma mansoni at concentrations of 100 microg/mL. The toxicities of the latex and the irritant fractions, but not of the triterpenic fraction, against Artemia salina were high with LC50 values < 10 microg/mL. The possible application of the latex of E. conspicua as an alternative natural molluscicide is considered.  相似文献

The investigation of the response of Biomphalaria glabrata snails to Echinostoma paraensei (digenea) at 2 days post-exposure by suppression subtractive hybridization yielded a partial sequence of the anti-oxidant enzyme manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). Full-length MnSOD (669nt) from M line and BS-90 strains of B. glabrata differed by one synonymous nucleotide replacement. B. glabrata has 1-4 MnSOD loci (Southern hybridization). Both snail strains expressed MnSOD at equal baseline levels (quantitative PCR). Susceptible snails increased expression of MnSOD following infection with E. paraensei or Schistosoma mansoni, and expression was reduced in the incompatible combination (BS-90 B. glabrata and S. mansoni). Thus, MnSOD did not determine resistance or susceptibility for these parasites, but expression of MnSOD is consistent with its involvement in a stress response of B. glabrata.  相似文献

The main objective of this research is to evaluate the molluscicide activity of Physalis angulata L. Biomphalaria tenagophila specimens under laboratory conditions. Extracts and fractions were supplied by the Laborat rio de Qu mica de Produtos Naturais, Farmanguinhos-Fiocruz. Experiments were performed according to the methodology described by the World Health Organization for molluscicide tests using the concentrations from 0.1 to 500 mg/l of the extracts, fractions and of a pool of physalins modified steroids present in this species. The results show that ethyl acetate and acetone extracts from the whole plant, the ethanolic extracts of the roots and the physalins pool from stems and leaves were active. Only the whole plant extracts were available in sufficient quantity for the determination of LD50 and LD90 values.  相似文献

The molluscicidal activity of leaf and rhizome extracts of Iris germanica L. (var. alba) against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails was evaluated and the rhizome extracts were found to be the most potent. Activity-guided fractionation revealed that the chloroform extract showed the highest molluscicidal activity (LC90 = 1.26 mg/l) among the tested extracts of the rhizomes. Fraction B prepared from the chloroform extract was the most potent molluscicide (LC90 = 0.96 mg/l) in addition, it showed a significant heart rate reduction in the snail after a 6- to 24-h exposure period. It also displayed a significant level of cercaricidal potential in a time-concentration relationship pattern. Chromatographic fractionation and purification of fraction B resulted in the isolation of two novel compounds: 5,2'-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6,7-methylenedioxyflavone and 5,7,2'-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavanone. Their structures were established by one- and two-dimensional NMR methods and mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Gross and histologic studies were done on laboratory-raised Physa heterostropha, Helisoma trivolvis, and Biomphalaria glabrata snails exposed individually to 100 cercariae of Echinostoma revolutum. Cercariae showed a predisposition for the kidneys of snails. They entered the nephridiopore, migrated up the tubular kidney, and encysted in the saccular kidney within 2 hr. Considerably more cysts were in the kidney of B. glabrata at 24 hr than in H. trivolvis or P. heterostropha kidneys. Encysted metacercariae were not infective to domestic chicks at 2 hr, but were infective by 4 hr. Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to about 1,000 cercariae/snail and necropsied either 10 or 16 wk postexposure contained 300-500 cysts/kidney; about one-half the cysts were viable and infective to chicks. Biomphalaria glabrata is an excellent second intermediate host for the laboratory propagation of E. revolutum.  相似文献

In the search for new molluscicidal agents we tested the activity of lapachol and other 2-hydroxy-3-alkylnaphthoquinones possessing nitrogenated alkyl chains, against the snail Biomphalaria glabrata. Lapachol, isolapachol and nor-lapachol showed strong molluscicidal activity against the adult snail (LD(90)<10 ppm) and significant toxicity against snail egg masses (LD(90)<0.2 ppm). As lapachol is easily extracted, and the derivatives can be synthesised without any difficulty, large-scale synthesis and field tests can be conducted, with a view to large-scale molluscicidal programs.  相似文献
