Background

While considerable scientific effort has been devoted to studying how birds navigate over long distances, relatively little is known about how targets are detected, obstacles are avoided and smooth landings are orchestrated. Here we examine how visual features in the environment, such as contrasting edges, determine where a bird will land.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Landing in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) was investigated by training them to fly from a perch to a feeder, and video-filming their landings. The feeder was placed on a grey disc that produced a contrasting edge against a uniformly blue background. We found that the birds tended to land primarily at the edge of the disc and walk to the feeder, even though the feeder was in the middle of the disc. This suggests that the birds were using the visual contrast at the boundary of the disc to target their landings. When the grey level of the disc was varied systematically, whilst keeping the blue background constant, there was one intermediate grey level at which the budgerigar''s preference for the disc boundary disappeared. The budgerigars then landed randomly all over the test surface. Even though this disc is (for humans) clearly distinguishable from the blue background, it offers very little contrast against the background, in the red and green regions of the spectrum.

Conclusions

We conclude that budgerigars use visual edges to target and guide landings. Calculations of photoreceptor excitation reveal that edge detection in landing budgerigars is performed by a color-blind luminance channel that sums the signals from the red and green photoreceptors, or, alternatively, receives input from the red double-cones. This finding has close parallels to vision in honeybees and primates, where edge detection and motion perception are also largely color-blind.  相似文献

The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is a promising model species for the study of adult vocal learning. To date, several studies have confirmed the existence of vocal plasticity and, more importantly, rapid imitation of contact calls by adult male budgerigars. Vocal learning has not been investigated in female budgerigars, however. Since one likely function of the contact call is to denote group affiliation, we tested the hypothesis that female budgerigars, when placed into groups, would develop a shared contact call. We recorded the contact call repertoires of eight adult female budgerigars that were unfamiliar with one another, then placed them into two groups. Each group was deprived of visual contact with other birds. Recording sessions continued for the subsequent 8 wks, and behavioral observations were also conducted during this time. Within 4–7 wks, females in both groups converged on a common call type. This rate of convergence is slower than that observed in prior experiments limited to male birds, and much slower than vocal imitation by male budgerigars paired with females. Therefore, while our study documents vocal plasticity in adult female budgerigars, it also suggests that female budgerigars learn new vocalizations more slowly than males do.  相似文献

The metabolism, excretory rates, and excretory patterns of carbon 14 (14C) radiolabeled estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) were studied in female budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and orange‐winged Amazon parrots (Amazona amazonica). Radiolabeled E2 and T were injected intramuscularly into six budgerigars and two orange‐winged Amazon parrots. Serial fecal/urine samples were collected for 168 h post‐radiolabel injection. Peak radiolabeled E2 excretion was observed at 4 h post‐injection, and by 24 h, 93.3 ± 6.3 and 65.9% (range, 59.1–72.7%) of the injected radiolabel was recovered in the fecal/urine matter of budgerigars and orange‐winged Amazon parrots, respectively. Similarly, peak radiolabeled T excretion was observed at 4 h post‐injection with 92.7± 3.6 and 66.2% (range, 57.5–75.2%) of the injected radiolabel recovered in the fecal/urine matter by 24 h in the budgerigars and orange‐winged Amazon parrots, respectively. High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of the fecal/urine material revealed that both parrot species excreted >80% of the radiolabel in the form of complex steroid conjugates. Immunoreactive E2 and T metabolites were detected using estrone (E1) and C‐21/C‐19 conjugate enzyme immunoassays, respectively. Hydrolysis of the E2 metabolites and HPLC analysis of the ether extracts revealed that E2 and E1 were the major steroid moieties. Hydrolysis of the T metabolites and HPLC analysis of the ether extracts revealed two and three major unconjugated peaks for the budgerigars and the orange‐winged Amazon parrots, respectively. Sarcocystis falcatula is an apicomplexan parasite with a broad range of avian intermediate hosts. The pathology and pathogenesis of infection with this parasite has been studied experimentally in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The present study quantitatively examines the pathology of this parasite in canaries (Serinus canarius) and pigeons (Columba livia) and compares it with that found in budgerigars. The general progression of merogony and cyst formation is similar qualitatively to that seen in budgerigars, but it differs quantitatively. The principal site of precystic merogony is in pulmonary endothelial cells. The magnitude of pulmonary meront burdens (at similar inoculated dosages) varies in different intermediate host species. Merogony is less persistent than in budgerigars. Among the various species of birds, the magnitude of precystic merogony correlates differently with the magnitude of skeletal muscle cyst burdens. The distribution of cyst burdens among various muscles also differs. The composition of inflammatory cells differs among various avian species' response to S. falcatula. Pathologic changes quantitatively parallel tissue meront burdens (except possibly in the liver of canaries), resulting in an interstitial pneumonitis, hepatitis, and mild inflammatory lesions of other organs.  相似文献

The susceptibility of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to graded doses of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts was studied. Sixteen budgerigars were divided into 4 groups (A-D) of 4 each. Birds in groups A-C were fed 100,000, 1,000, or 100 infective oocysts of the VEG strain of T. gondii, respectively. Budgerigars in group D were not fed oocysts and served as controls. All 4 birds in group A died (or were killed) because of acute severe enteritis 5 or 6 days after feeding oocysts (DAFO). Three of the 4 birds in group B were killed (or died) because of toxoplasmosis 9 or 14 DAFO. One budgerigar in group C and the 4 budgerigars in group D remained healthy and were killed 35 or 39 DAFO. Toxoplasma gondii was demonstrated in tissues of all budgerigars fed oocysts. The control budgerigars remained clinically normal and showed no evidence of T. gondii exposure. These results indicate that, compared to other passerines, budgerigars are relatively resistant to clinical toxoplasmosis.  相似文献

The budgerigar, a small species of parrot, can learn new vocalizations throughout life and is therefore widely used as a model system for studying various aspects of vocal learning. It is not known, however, why parrots imitate sounds. To test the hypothesis that vocal imitation in budgerigars is related to pair bonding, we recorded approximately 100 contact calls from each of nine male and nine female adult budgerigars that were unfamiliar with one another and then placed them into pairs. We sampled their contact call repertoire weekly and conducted twice-weekly behavioural observation sessions. We compared contact calls by sonagram cross-correlation and classified them by means of a hierarchical clustering algorithm. This analysis showed that all pairs developed a shared call within an average of 2.1 weeks. Further analysis revealed that eight of the nine male budgerigars imitated the contact calls of their assigned mates, while none of the females imitated the calls of their males. We conclude that contact call imitation in adult budgerigars probably contributes to pair bond formation and maintenance. Prior studies on budgerigars were limited by the lack of a behavioural paradigm to elicit vocal imitation reliably. Our study remedies this and thereby serves as a foundation for future studies on vocal learning in adult animals. Copyright 2000 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

The effects of acute (3 h), repeated acute (3 exposures each of 3 h) and chronic (72 h) normobaric hyperoxic exposure in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were evaluated by monitoring the effects on pulmonary enzymic antioxidants, and indicators of lipid peroxidation. All durations of oxygen exposure resulted in significant respiratory alkalosis and elevated pulmonary and blood glutathione peroxidase concentrations. The concentrations of other pulmonary enzymic antioxidants including glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase were not significantly altered by oxygen exposure. Pulmonary concentrations of the lipid peroxidation markers malonaldehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenal were not significantly elevated following oxygen exposure. Plasma concentrations of 8-epi isoprostane F(2alpha) were significantly elevated following both acute and repeated acute exposure. The results indicate that in budgerigars, both acute and chronic oxygen exposure can result in significant alteration in respiratory function and increased production of reactive oxygen species.  相似文献

Female budgerigars provided with nest boxes and exposed to male vocalizations were kept on light regimes involving 6 h of light and then a further 2 h of light starting 8, 12, 16, 17 or 18 h after the initial dawn. A higher proportion of females laid when the second light period started 6 h after the first one, than when it started earlier or later. That the effect was not due merely to the males vocalizing more on this light regime than on others was shown by substituting for the males taped vocalizations played during the light periods. It remains possible that females are more responsive to those vocalizations instead of/as well as to light at some points of the circadian cycle than others.  相似文献

Trap perches were utilised to quantify mite recoveries during efficacy tests of pyrethrin formulations against experimental infestations ofDermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778) in budgerigars and pigeons, and to monitor mite recoveries from untreated canaries. Pyrethrins applied topically before infestation significantly reduced the mean numbers of poultry red mites found in both budgerigar and pigeon trap perches, over those in untreated controls (P=<0.01). In untreated control budgerigars and pigeons, and in untreated canaries, the percentage recoveries after 48 h were 12.6±1.6, 4.1±1.9, and 32.6±1.6%, respectively (geometric mean±sd), and the blood engorgements rates were 71.5±1.7, 11.9±5.1, and 90.1±1.0% respectively. The recovery in trap perches of mites from canaries declined exponentially; 85% of the cumulative total recovered was collected 24 h after infestation, but small numbers were recovered daily up to 96 h (limit of observation). The use of the trap perches is discussed as a way of assessing the efficacy of acaricides, and as a laboratory tool in studies on mite aggregation behaviour or immune responses to mite infestation.  相似文献

Two isolates of Sarcocystis falcatula were obtained from the lungs of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) fed sporocysts from two naturally-infected South American opossums (Didelphis albiventris). The two isolates were designated SF-1A and SF-2A. Both isolates induced fatal infections in budgerigars. Both isolates underwent schizogony in African green monkey kidney cells. The structure of schizonts in the lungs of budgerigars was more variable than that observed in cell culture. The two isolates were identified as S. falcatula by the two species-specific Hinf 1 restriction fragments dervied from digestion of a PCR amplification using primers JNB33/JNB54. Thus, the South American opossum, D. albiventris, is a definitive host for S. falcatula.  相似文献

An unidentified isolate of a Sarcocystis falcatula-like parasite was obtained from the lungs of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) fed sporocysts from a naturally-infected South American opossum, Didelphis albiventris from Brazil. Four captive budgerigars fed sporocysts from the opossum intestine died of acute sarcocystosis 8, 10, and 12 days after oral inoculation (DAI); one budgerigar was killed 12 DAI when it was lethargic. Schizonts and merozoites found in the lungs of the budgerigars reacted mildly with polyclonal S. falcatula antibody. The parasite was isolated in equine kidney cell cultures inoculated with lung tissue from a budgerigar that was killed 12 DAI. Two budgerigars inoculated subcutaneously with 100,000 culture-derived S. falcatula merozoites developed acute sarcocystosis and S. falcatula-like schizonts were found in their lungs 15 and 16 DAI. Four budgerigars kept as unfed controls in the same environment remained free of Sarcocystis infection. The parasite underwent schizogony in African green monkey kidney cells and bovine turbinate cells. Merozoites divided by endopolygeny, often leaving a residual body. Polymerase chain reaction studies using primers JNB33/JNB54 and Hinf I and Dra I digestion indicated that the isolate was not S. falcatula. Results of this study indicated that the South American opossum, D. albiventris, is a definitive host for yet another S. falcatula-like parasite.  相似文献

Parrots comprise one of the several taxa in which life‐long learning of new vocal signals used in intraspecific communication is known to occur routinely. The functions and evolutionary bases of this ability are largely unknown. In the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), males typically imitate their partner’s contact call type during pair formation. However, a female’s initial choice among unfamiliar males is not based on their production of her call type, because birds without prior social contact rarely produce the same call type. Here, we demonstrate that female budgerigars prefer unfamiliar males with calls that are similar to their own, as measured by spectrogram cross‐correlation, but which are not imitations. This was shown by training females via operant conditioning to control access to movies of courting males and by systematically varying the audio tracks of these movies. Females learned this task easily and interacted with virtual males as if they were real. This methodology will be useful for exploring functions and mechanisms of social communication, because it eliminates the confounding impact of short‐term changes in a stimulus individual’s behavior on a test individual’s response. Our results suggest that the neuroplastic vocal abilities of budgerigars, and perhaps other parrots, have been shaped by sexual selection.  相似文献

Fluorescence has so far been found in 52 parrot species when illuminated with ultraviolet-A (UVA) 'black' lamps, and two attempts have been made to determine whether such fluorescence plays any role in sexual signalling. However, the contribution of the reflectance versus fluorescence to the total radiance from feathers, even in the most studied species to date (budgerigars), is unclear. Nor has the plumage of this study species been systematically assessed to determine the distribution of fluorescent patches. We therefore used spectrofluorometry to determine which areas of budgerigars fluoresce and the excitation and emission spectra involved; this is the first time that such a technique has been applied to avian plumage. We found that both the yellow crown and (normally hidden) white downy chest feathers exhibit strong UVA-induced fluorescence, with peak emissions at 527 nm and 436 nm, respectively. Conversely, the bright-green chest and dark-blue tail feathers do not fluoresce. When comparing reflectance spectra (400-700 nm) from the yellow crown using illuminants with a proportion of UVA comparable to daylight, and illuminants with all UVA removed, no measurable difference resulting from fluorescence was found. This suggests that under normal daylight the contribution of fluorescence to radiance is probably trivial. Furthermore, these spectra revealed that males had fluorescent crowns with substantially higher reflectance than those of females, in both the UV waveband and at longer wavelengths. Reflectance spectrophotometry was also performed on a number of live wild-type male budgerigars to investigate the chromatic contrast between the different plumage areas. This showed that many plumage regions are highly UV-reflective. Overall our results suggest that rapid surveys using UVA black lamps may overestimate the contribution of fluorescence to plumage coloration, and that any signalling role of fluorescence emissions, at least from the yellow crown of budgerigars, may not be as important as previously thought.  相似文献

SEM evidence for a new species, Giardia psittaci   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The genus Giardia has been subdivided by Filice (1952) into 3 species, G. agilis, G. muris, and G. duodenalis, based on the morphology of the median body and subtle variations in the dimensions of trophozoites. Giardia trophozoites were isolated from the small intestine of budgerigars (parakeets) and examined morphologically with light and scanning electron microscopy. These trophozoites, like other Giardia spp., possessed a flattened dorso-ventral shape, 8 flagella, and an adhesive disc on the ventral surface. The presence of a claw hammer-shaped median body suggested classification of these trophozoites as G. duodenalis. However, unlike any known members of G. duodenalis, the Giardia trophozoites from budgerigars were morphologically distinct in that they lacked the ventrolateral flange and therefore did not have a marginal groove bordering the anterior and lateral border of the adhesive disc. This distinct morphology clearly indicated that trophozoites from budgerigars should be considered as a separate species, G. psittaci. Our evidence has demonstrated that median body shape cannot serve as a sole criterion for speciation of Giardia. In addition, if other avian species of Giardia also resemble G. psittaci, then this would suggest that evolutionary divergence has occurred in the genus Giardia.  相似文献

Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and Bourke’s parrots (Neopsephotus bourkii) are closely related birds with different activity patterns. Budgerigars are strictly diurnal while Bourke’s parrots are active in dim twilight. Earlier studies show that the intensity threshold of colour vision is similar in both species while Bourke’s parrots have larger eyes with a higher density of rods than budgerigars. In this study, we investigate whether this could be an adaptation for better spatial vision in dim light. We used two alternative forced-choice experiments to determine the spatial acuity of both species at light intensities ranging from 0.08 to 73 cd/m2. We also determined the spatial contrast sensitivity function (CSF) for bright light in Bourke’s parrots and compare it to existing data for budgerigars. The spatial acuity of Bourke’s parrots was found to be similar to that of budgerigars at all light levels. Also the CSF of Bourke’s parrots is similar to that of budgerigars with a sensitivity peak located between 2.1 and 2.6 cycles/degree. Our findings do not support the hypothesis that Bourke’s parrots have superior spatial acuity in dim light compared to budgerigars and the adaptive value of the relatively rod-rich and large eyes of Bourke’s parrots remains unclear.  相似文献

Elaborate or colourful feathers are important traits in female mate choice in birds but little attention has been given to potential costs of maintaining these traits in good condition with preening behaviour. Recent studies indicate that the time and energy required to maintain ornamental plumage in good condition reinforces the honesty of plumage trait. It has been proposed that some behaviours, whose primary function is not to transfer information, can also evolve as signalling components. Here we investigate whether the preening behaviour intensity has a signalling component: we hypothesized that if only high quality males can invest a lot of time in preening, this behaviour may be used by females as a quality signal (attractive preening hypothesis). We tested this hypothesis by using female budgerigars in mate‐choice tests in captivity. We tried to experimentally manipulate the preening behaviour of two groups of budgerigar males (treatment and control group). The proportion of time in which treated males preened in front of females was statistically higher than for control males, however, females spent similar amounts of time with treated males and control males. Moreover, males did not show significant quantitative changes in preening (for both groups) when females were present, suggesting that male budgerigars did not use this behaviour to convey information. These results are inconsistent with the ‘attractive preening’ hypothesis which predicts that preening behaviour itself provides information on condition and is used in female choice.  相似文献

Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) are small Australian parrots that can imitate novel sounds in adulthood and therefore serve as a convenient model system for the study of vocal learning in adult animals. Previous anatomical studies had indicated that known auditory regions in the telencephalon of budgerigars are connected, albeit indirectly and rather sparsely, to vocal motor nuclei. Physiological evidence for connections between the auditory and vocal motor systems in budgerigars had been lacking, however. Here, we show that neurons in a telencephalic vocal motor region, i.e., the central nucleus of the lateral neostriatum (NLc), are responsive to auditory stimuli in isoflurane-anesthetized budgerigars. These responses are highly variable from trial to trial and frequently have latencies in excess of 100 ms. Neurons in NLc generally respond better to a budgerigar's own contact call than to a white noise stimulus, but the response preferences of NLc neurons in budgerigars are generally weaker and more diverse than the response preferences of neurons in the high vocal center of songbirds, which is probably analogous to NLc. These data indicate that parrots and songbirds, which have evolved the ability to learn vocalizations independently of one another, have both evolved physiologically effective connections between their auditory and vocal motor systems. Interestingly, however, the anatomical pathways by which the auditory and vocal motor systems interact, and the physiological details of how they communicate, appear to be significantly different between the two taxa.  相似文献

The perceptual organization of auditory stimuli can reveal a great deal about how the brain naturally groups events. The current study uses identification techniques to investigate the abilities of two species of birds in identifying zebra finch song as well as synthetically generated speech stimuli. Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) were trained to differentially peck keys in response to the presentation of various complex stimuli. Although there were no clear differences in performance during the training paradigm between the two species, budgerigars were far more adept at learning to identify both sets of complex stimuli than were zebra finches, requiring far less trials to reach criterion. The non-singing but vocally plastic budgerigars vastly outperformed zebra finches at identifying both zebra finch song and synthetically designed human speech despite known similarities in auditory sensitivities between the two species and seemingly equivalent learning capacity. The flexibility that budgerigars seem to have at identifying various stimuli is highlighted by their enhanced performance in these tasks. These results are discussed in the context of what is known about both general and specialized processes which may contribute to any differences or similarities in performance.  相似文献

Dietary protein deficiency is considered a major obstacle in the evolution of highly specialized nectarivorous and frugivorous birds. Proposed physiological mechanisms that enable such specialists to subsist on low‐protein diets include minimized endogenous protein losses, which contribute to reduced protein requirements. I compared these traits among nectarivorous red lories (Eos bornea), frugivorous Pesquet's parrots (Psittrichas fulgidus), and granivorous budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). My results suggest that, relative to budgerigars, red lories and Pesquet's parrots have low endogenous protein losses and reduced crude protein (CP) requirements. Based on nitrogen balance analyses, diets containing 1.0%, 3.2%, and 8.2% CP (on a dry matter (DM) basis) would meet the minimal protein requirements for maintenance for red lories, Pesquet's parrots, and budgerigars, respectively. Low endogenous protein losses and reduced protein requirements are effective physiological adaptations that allow birds such as red lories and Pesquet's parrots to specialize on low‐protein foods.
