The present study examined the development of bimanual interaction during the imitation of a live demonstration. To this end, children of five different age groups observed an adult model performing in an object manipulation task consisting to open a box with one hand, taking out an object with the other hand, and closing the box again, before they were asked to imitate this motor task under different imitation conditions. The children's responses were videotaped, coded in dichotomous data, and then transformed in percentage scores. The main results showed that all children were able to imitate/attain the goal of the task. However, differences were observed for the different imitation conditions, which were also reflected in some age effects, while hand dominance was a strong constraint on imitation. Also, practice did not seem to increase the likelihood of model imitation. These findings confirm that imitation is a reconstruction mechanism hierarchically organized.  相似文献

This study examined task specific effects of third-party ostracism on imitative fidelity in early childhood (N = 96, 3–6-year-olds). Start- and end-states of action sequences were manipulated to examine the effects of priming third-party ostracism versus affiliation on children's imitation of instrumental (i.e., action sequence with a different start- and end-state) versus social convention (i.e., action sequence with an identical start- and end-state) tasks. Children's performance was coded for imitative fidelity and children's explanations for their behavior. As predicted, imitative fidelity was highest and social convention explanations were most common when primed with ostracism in the social convention task. The data are consistent with our proposal that imitation serves an affiliative function in response to the threat of ostracism, a response amplified for social conventions.  相似文献

The tendency to mimic the behaviour of others is affected by a variety of social factors, and it has been argued that such “mirroring” is often unconsciously deployed as a means of increasing affiliation during interpersonal interactions. However, the relationship between automatic motor imitation and status/power is currently unclear. This paper reports five experiments that investigated whether social status (Experiments 1, 2, and 3) or power (Experiments 4 and 5) had a moderating effect on automatic imitation (AI) in finger-movement tasks, using a series of different manipulations. Experiments 1 and 2 manipulated the social status of the observed person using an associative learning task. Experiment 3 manipulated social status via perceived competence at a simple computer game. Experiment 4 manipulated participants’ power (relative to the actors) in a card-choosing task. Finally, Experiment 5 primed participants using a writing task, to induce the sense of being powerful or powerless. No significant interactions were found between congruency and social status/power in any of the studies. Additionally, Bayesian hypothesis testing indicated that the null hypothesis should be favoured over the experimental hypothesis in all five studies. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for AI tasks, social effects on mimicry, and the hypothesis of mimicry as a strategic mechanism to promote affiliation.  相似文献

Mankind is unique in her ability for observational learning, i.e. the transmission of acquired knowledge and behavioral repertoire through observation of others' actions. In the present study we used electrophysiological measures to investigate brain mechanisms of observational learning. Analysis investigated the possible functional coupling between occipital (alpha) and motor (mu) rhythms operating in the 10 Hz frequency range for translating "seeing" into "doing". Subjects observed movement sequences consisting of six consecutive left or right hand button presses directed at one of two target-buttons for subsequent imitation. Each movement sequence was presented four times, intervened by short pause intervals for sequence rehearsal. During a control task subjects observed the same movement sequences without a requirement for subsequent reproduction. Although both alpha and mu rhythms desynchronized during the imitation task relative to the control task, modulations in alpha and mu power were found to be largely independent from each other over time, arguing against a functional coupling of alpha and mu generators during observational learning. This independence was furthermore reflected in the absence of coherence between occipital and motor electrodes overlaying alpha and mu generators. Instead, coherence analysis revealed a pair of symmetric fronto-parietal networks, one over the left and one over the right hemisphere, reflecting stronger coherence during observation of movements than during pauses. Individual differences in fronto-parietal coherence were furthermore found to predict imitation accuracy. The properties of these networks, i.e. their fronto-parietal distribution, their ipsilateral organization and their sensitivity to the observation of movements, match closely with the known properties of the mirror neuron system (MNS) as studied in the macaque brain. These results indicate a functional dissociation between higher order areas for observational learning (i.e. parts of the MNS as reflected in 10 Hz coherence measures) and peripheral structures (i.e. lateral occipital gyrus for alpha; central sulcus for mu) that provide low-level support for observation and motor imagery of action sequences.  相似文献

Automatic imitation is a cornerstone of nonverbal communication that fosters rapport between interaction partners. Recent research has suggested that stable dimensions of personality are antecedents to automatic imitation, but the empirical evidence linking imitation with personality traits is restricted to a few studies with modest sample sizes. Additionally, atypical imitation has been documented in autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia, but the mechanisms underpinning these behavioural profiles remain unclear. Using a larger sample than prior studies (N=243), the current study tested whether performance on a computer-based automatic imitation task could be predicted by personality traits associated with social behaviour (extraversion and agreeableness) and with disorders of social cognition (autistic-like and schizotypal traits). Further personality traits (narcissism and empathy) were assessed in a subsample of participants (N=57). Multiple regression analyses showed that personality measures did not predict automatic imitation. In addition, using a similar analytical approach to prior studies, no differences in imitation performance emerged when only the highest and lowest 20 participants on each trait variable were compared. These data weaken support for the view that stable personality traits are antecedents to automatic imitation and that neural mechanisms thought to support automatic imitation, such as the mirror neuron system, are dysfunctional in autism spectrum disorders or schizophrenia. In sum, the impact that personality variables have on automatic imitation is less universal than initial reports suggest.  相似文献

According to the ideomotor theory, actions are represented in terms of their perceptual effects, offering a solution for the correspondence problem of imitation (how to translate the observed action into a corresponding motor output). This effect-based coding of action is assumed to be acquired through action-effect learning. Accordingly, performing an action leads to the integration of the perceptual codes of the action effects with the motor commands that brought them about. While ideomotor theory is invoked to account for imitation, the influence of action-effect learning on imitative behavior remains unexplored. In two experiments, imitative performance was measured in a reaction time task following a phase of action-effect acquisition. During action-effect acquisition, participants freely executed a finger movement (index or little finger lifting), and then observed a similar (compatible learning) or a different (incompatible learning) movement. In Experiment 1, finger movements of left and right hands were presented as action-effects during acquisition. In Experiment 2, only right-hand finger movements were presented during action-effect acquisition and in the imitation task the observed hands were oriented orthogonally to participants’ hands in order to avoid spatial congruency effects. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that imitative performance was improved after compatible learning, compared to incompatible learning. In Experiment 2, although action-effect learning involved perception of finger movements of right hand only, imitative capabilities of right- and left-hand finger movements were equally affected. These results indicate that an observed movement stimulus processed as the effect of an action can later prime execution of that action, confirming the ideomotor approach to imitation. We further discuss these findings in relation to previous studies of action-effect learning and in the framework of current ideomotor approaches to imitation.  相似文献

Imitation is crucial for proper development of social and communicative skills. Here, we argue that, based on an error analysis of a behavioral imitation task, adult Asperger and high-functioning autistic subjects suffer from an intriguing deficit of imitation: they lack the natural preference for imitation in a mirror-image fashion. The imitation task consisted of a simple movement sequence of putting a pen with the left or right hand into a green or a blue cup using one of two possible grips. The subjects were asked to imitate the experimenter's hand movements either using the crossed hand (e.g., the subject's right hand corresponding to the experimenter's right hand) for imitation or to imitate as if looking in a mirror (e.g., the subject's left hand corresponding to the experimenter's right hand). When people normally view other persons face-to-face, they prefer to imitate as in a mirror, and observation of mirror-image-like movements speeds up performance in nonimitative tasks. However, our autistic subjects, defective in social cognition, did not profit from mirror-image movements of others. These results provide a new insight into the difficulties that autistic subjects face in viewing and understanding actions of others.  相似文献

Short rotation coppice (SRC) is considered an important biomass supply option for meeting the European renewable energy targets. This paper presents an overview of existing and prospective sustainability requirements, Member State reporting obligations and parts of the methodology for calculating GHG emissions savings within the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), and shows how these RED-associated sustainability criteria may affect different stakeholders along SRC bioenergy supply chains. Existing and prospective tools are assessed on their usefulness in ensuring that SRC bioenergy is produced with sufficient consideration given to the RED-associated criteria. A sustainability framework is outlined that aims at (1) facilitating the development of SRC production systems that are attractive from the perspectives of all stakeholders, and (2) ensuring that the SRC production is RED eligible. Producer manuals, EIAs, and voluntary certification schemes can all be useful for ensuring RED eligibility. However, they are currently not sufficiently comprehensive, neither individually nor combined, and suggestions for how they can be more complementary are given. Geographical information systems offer opportunities for administrative authorities to provide stakeholders with maps or databases over areas/fields suitable for RED-eligible SRC cultivation. However, proper consideration of all relevant aspects requires that all stakeholders in the SRC supply chain become engaged in the development of SRC production systems and that a landscape perspective is used.  相似文献

1. The uptake of potassium chloride by disks of several storagetissues has been determined from solutions at alkaline pH valuesand compared with that form solutions at pH 6.5. The stimulationof cation uptake under the alkaline conditions which has previouslybeen obtained with beet tissues was observed with some of thesetissues to a greater or lesser extent. 2. It is concluded that it is the accumulation of anions present in alkaline solutions which generally promotesthe uptake of cations; tissues which do not show the ‘pHeffect’ accumulate very little in the presence of the Cl- anion. 3. In some cases the alkaline pH values also stimulated anionuptake. This was especially true in artichoke in which the absorptionof both ions was stimulated by approximately the same amount. It is concluded that this represents either a true pH effector a direct effect of anions on the overall salt sccumulation mechanism rather than an indirect effect throughorganic acid synthesis. 4. The experiments reveal a cation/anion ratio of approximatelyI:I when the uptake of ions is taken into consideration. It is suggested that this ratio may be more frequent then isgenerally accepted and that the uptake of CO2 (converted toan anion in the tissue) may take the place ions at lower pH values. 5. The deleterious effects of frequently observed on growth contrast with the stimulations of salt absorptionobtained here; the rapid increase in the concertration of cationsand/or organic acid anions associated with HCO uptake may insome way be responsible for this.  相似文献

Emotion processing has been shown to acquire priority by biasing allocation of attentional resources. Aversive images or fearful expressions are processed quickly and automatically. Many existing findings suggested that processing of emotional information was pre-attentive, largely immune from attentional control. Other studies argued that attention gated the processing of emotion. To tackle this controversy, the current study examined whether and to what degrees attention modulated processing of emotion using a stimulus-response-compatibility (SRC) paradigm. We conducted two flanker experiments using color scale faces in neutral expressions or gray scale faces in emotional expressions. We found SRC effects for all three dimensions (color, gender, and emotion) and SRC effects were larger when the conflicts were task relevant than when they were task irrelevant, suggesting that conflict processing of emotion was modulated by attention, similar to those of color and face identity (gender). However, task modulation on color SRC effect was significantly greater than that on gender or emotion SRC effect, indicating that processing of salient information was modulated by attention to a lesser degree than processing of non-emotional stimuli. We proposed that emotion processing can be influenced by attentional control, but at the same time salience of emotional information may bias toward bottom-up processing, rendering less top-down modulation than that on non-emotional stimuli.  相似文献

In this paper I consider whether traditional behaviors of animals, like traditions of humans, are transmitted by imitation learning. Review of the literature on problem solving by captive primates, and detailed consideration of two widely cited instances of purported learning by imitation and of culture in free-living primates (sweet-potato washing by Japanese macaques and termite fishing by chimpanzees), suggests that nonhuman primates do not learn to solve problems by imitation. It may, therefore, be misleading to treat animal traditions and human culture as homologous (rather than analogous) and to refer to animal traditions as cultural.  相似文献

Kinetics of oxygen uptake at the onset of exercise in boys and men   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The objective of this study was to compare theO2 uptake(O2) kinetics at the onsetof heavy exercise in boys and men. Nine boys, aged 9-12 yr, and 8 men, aged 19-27 yr, performed a continuous incremental cyclingtask to determine peak O2(O2 peak). On 2 other days, subjects performed each day four cycling tasks at 80 rpm, each consisting of 2 min of unloaded cycling followed twice bycycling at 50%O2 peak for 3.5 min,once by cycling at 100%O2 peak for 2 min,and once by cycling at 130%O2 peak for 75 s.O2 deficit was not significantlydifferent between boys and men (respectively, 50%O2 peak task: 6.6 ± 11.1 vs. 5.5 ± 7.3 ml · min1 · kg1;100% O2 peak task:28.5 ± 8.1 vs. 31.8 ± 6.3 ml · min1 · kg1;and 130%O2 peaktask: 30.1 ± 5.7 vs. 35.8 ± 5.3 ml · min1 · kg1).To assess the kinetics, phase I was excluded from analysis. Phase IIO2 kinetics could bedescribed in all cases by a monoexponential function. ANOVA revealed nodifferences in time constants between boys and men (respectively, 50%O2 peaktask: 22.8 ± 5.1 vs. 26.4 ± 4.1 s; 100%O2 peak task: 28.0 ± 6.0 vs. 28.1 ± 4.4 s; and 130%O2 peak task: 19.8 ± 4.1 vs. 20.7 ± 5.7 s). In conclusion, O2 deficit and fast-componentO2 on-transientsare similar in boys and men, even at high exercise intensities, whichis in contrast to the findings of other studies employing simplermethods of analysis. The previous interpretation that children relyless on nonoxidative energy pathways at the onset of heavy exercise isnot supported by our findings.

Avena coleoptile hemicelluloses were fractionated into water-solublehemicelluloses I and IIB and water-insoluble hemicellulose IIA.These hemicelluloses were then subjected to glycosidic linkageanalysis by methylation technique, which revealed that hemicelluloseI was predominantly composed of arabinoxylans and ß-(l4)glucans and hemicellulose IIB was composed of arabinoxylans,ß-(l4) : (l3)-mixed linked glucans, ß-(l4)-glucansand xyloglucans. Hemicellulose IIA was mainly composed of xyloglucansand probably ß-(l4)-glucans. Methylation analysisof hemicelluloses extracted from Avena coleoptile segments treatedwith auxin in the presence of mannitol (0.15 M) indicated thatauxin apparently had no effect on the structure of arabinoxylanand caused a specific decrease in the amount of ß-(l4): (l3)-mixed linked glucan. Growing evidence shows that adhesion molecules on sickle erythrocytes interact with vascular endothelium leading to vaso-occlusion. Erythrocyte intercellular adhesion molecule-4 (ICAM-4) binds V-integrins, including V3 on endothelial cells. To explore the contribution of ICAM-4 to vascular pathology of sickle cell disease, we tested the effects of synthetic peptides, V(16)PFWVRMS (FWV) and T(91)RWATSRI (ATSR), based on V-binding domains of ICAM-4 and capable of inhibiting ICAM-4 and V-binding in vitro. For these studies, we utilized an established ex vivo microvascular model system that enables intravital microscopy and quantitation of adhesion under shear flow. In this model, the use of platelet-activating factor, which causes endothelial oxidant generation and endothelial activation, mimicked physiological states known to occur in sickle cell disease. Infusion of sickle erythrocytes into platelet-activating factor-treated ex vivo rat mesocecum vasculature produced pronounced adhesion of erythrocytes; small-diameter venules were sites of maximal adhesion and frequent blockage. Both FWV and ATSR peptides markedly decreased adhesion, and no vessel blockage was observed with either of the peptides, resulting in improved hemodynamics. ATSR also inhibited adhesion in unactivated microvasculature. Although infused fluoresceinated ATSR colocalized with vascular endothelium, pretreatment with function-blocking antibody to V3-integrin markedly inhibited this interaction. Our data strengthen the thesis that ICAM-4 on sickle erythrocytes binds endothelium via V3 and that this interaction contributes to vaso-occlusion. Thus peptides or small molecule mimetics of ICAM-4 may have therapeutic potential. sickle cell disease; intercellular adhesion molecule-4; V3-integrin; peripheral resistance unit; endothelium; erythrocytes  相似文献

Although 17-estradiol (E2) administration following trauma-hemorrhage prevents the suppression in splenocyte cytokine production, it remains unknown whether the salutary effects of 17-estradiol are mediated via estrogen receptor (ER)- or ER-. Moreover, it is unknown which signaling pathways are involved in 17-estradiol's salutary effects. Utilizing an ER-- or ER--specific agonist, we examined the role of ER- and ER- in E2-mediated restoration of T-cell cytokine production following trauma-hemorrhage. Moreover, since MAPK, NF-B, and activator protein (AP)-1 are known to regulate T-cell cytokine production, we also examined the activation of MAPK, NF-B, and AP-1. Male rats underwent trauma-hemorrhage (mean arterial pressure 40 mmHg for 90 min) and fluid resuscitation. ER- agonist propyl pyrazole triol (PPT; 5 µg/kg), ER- agonist diarylpropionitrile (DPN; 5 µg/kg), 17-estradiol (50 µg/kg), or vehicle (10% DMSO) was injected subcutaneously during resuscitation. Twenty-four hours thereafter, splenic T cells were isolated, and their IL-2 and IFN- production and MAPK, NF-B, and AP-1 activation were measured. T-cell IL-2 and IFN- production was decreased following trauma-hemorrhage, and this was accompanied with a decrease in T-cell MAPK, NF-B, and AP-1 activation. PPT or 17-estradiol administration following trauma-hemorrhage normalized those parameters, while DPN administration had no effect. Since PPT, but not DPN, administration following trauma-hemorrhage was as effective as 17-estradiol in preventing the T-cell suppression, it appears that ER- plays a predominant role in mediating the salutary effects of 17-estradiol on T cells following trauma-hemorrhage, and that such effects are likely mediated via normalization of MAPK, NF-B, and AP-1 signaling pathways. shock; MAPK; NF-B; activator protein-1; propyl pyrazole triol; diarylpropionitrile  相似文献

To elucidate signaling pathways activated by IL-1 and IL-6 that contribute to increased expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), we studied human hepatoma (HepG2) cells and primary mouse hepatocytes. HepG2 cell PAI-1 mRNA increased in response to IL-1, IL-6, and IL-1 plus IL-6 as shown by real-time PCR. Activity of the transiently transfected PAI-1 promoter (–829 to +36 bp) increased as well. Systematic promoter deletion assays showed that the region from –239 to –210 bp containing a putative CCAAT-enhancer binding protein (C/EBP) binding site was critical. Point mutations in this region abolished the IL-1 and IL-6 responses. Antibody interference electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that C/EBP (but not C/EBP or C/EBP) binding and protein were increased by IL-1, IL-6, and IL-1 plus IL-6 in HepG2 cells. IL-1 and IL-6 increased expression of both PAI-1 mRNA and C/EBP mRNA in mouse primary hepatocytes as well. Downregulation of C/EBP induced with small interfering RNA (siRNA) decreased secretion of PAI-1. As judged from results obtained with inhibitors, signal transduction in all three of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways was involved in IL-1-inducible PAI-1 expression. By contrast, JAK signaling was responsible for the IL-6-induced inducible expression. Thus IL-1 and IL-6 exert directionally similar effects on PAI-1 expression, but the induction involves distinct signaling pathways with a final common mediator, C/EBP. Background

Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are frequently hampered by motor impairment, with difficulties ranging from imitation of actions to recognition of motor intentions. Such a widespread inefficiency of the motor system is likely to interfere on the ontogeny of both motor planning and understanding of the goals of actions, thus delivering its ultimate effects on the emergence of social cognition.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We investigate the organization of action representation in 15 high functioning ASD (mean age: 8.11) and in two control samples of typically developing (TD) children: the first one, from a primary school, was matched for chronological age (CA), the second one, from a kindergarten, comprised children of much younger age (CY). We used nine newly designed behavioural motor tasks, aiming at exploring three domains of motor cognition: 1) imitation of actions, 2) production of pantomimes, and 3) comprehension of pantomimes. The findings reveal that ASD children fare significantly worse than the two control samples in each of the inspected components of the motor representation of actions, be it the imitation of gestures, the self-planning of pantomimes, or the (verbal) comprehension of observed pantomimes. In the latter task, owing to its cognitive complexity, ASD children come close to the younger TD children’s level of performance; yet they fare significantly worse with respect to their age-mate controls. Overall, ASD children reveal a profound damage to the mechanisms that control both production and pre-cognitive “comprehension” of the motor representation of actions.

Conclusions/Significance

Our findings suggest that many of the social cognitive impairments manifested by ASD individuals are likely rooted in their incapacity to assemble and directly grasp the intrinsic goal-related organization of motor behaviour. Such impairment of motor cognition might be partly due to an early damage of the Mirror Neuron Mechanism (MNM).  相似文献

Effects of l, N6-ethenoadenylates (e-adenylates) were testedon phosphorylation, and electron transport under phosphorylation, arsenylation and quasi-arsenylation (stimulation of electrontransport in the presence of ATP, AMP and arsenate) conditionsin isolated spinach chloroplasts. -ATP as well as ATP partially inhibited ferricyanide reductionthrough binding to the chloroplast coupling factor 1 with anapparent dissociation constant (KDapp) of around 5µM,which was remarkably larger than that for ATP (ca. 2µM).e-ATP at below 500 µM had no effect on phosphorylationbut inhibited quasi-arsenylation in competition with ATP withan apparent inhibition constant (K1app) of around 60 µM. -ADP as well as ADP partially inhibited ferricyanide reductionwith a KDapp value close to that for -ATP. -ADP was phosphorylated(the apparent Michaelis constant, Kmapp=80µM) accompanyingstimulation of ferricyanide reduction to the magnitude predicted(P/e=l). -ADP-arsenylation was also detected by stimulationof ferricyanide reduction. -AMP alone caused little inhibition of ferricyanide reductionas AMP, but competitively depressed the electron transport inhibitionby ADP and ATP with a K1app value of around 200 µM. -AMPwas not effective for ADP phosphorylation but inhibited stimulationdue to quasi-arsenylation coupling in competition with AMP K1app=150µM Among the possible combinations of adenylates and -adenylatesfor quasiarsenylation, only [ATP+AMP] could couple with theenergy transduction mechanism. Based on the specificity of binding sites to adenylates and-adenylates, an attempt was made to distinguish at least four(two pairs) kinds of binding sites (at least six sites in toto)on the chloroplast coupling factor 1 for photosynthetic energytransduction. When one pair of sites is occupied by the designatedadenylates or -adenylates (allosteric effectors), the couplingfactor is thought to be in a conformation for coupling withthe energy transduction mechanism in the presence of phosphateor arsenate. 1Presented to the 1st Symposium of Japan Bioenergetics Group,December 19, 1975, Osaka. Leks are clusters of males that hold territories containingno special resources except for the males themselves (Höglundand Alatalo, 1995). Among hypotheses put forth to explain whysuch clusters form, the hotshot hypothesis posits that leksform by males that would otherwise receive little attentionfrom females taking up positions next to males that would receivea great deal of female attention in any case (Beehler and Foster,1988; Höglund and Alatalo, 1995). Although this ideamight well be true, we still face the task of evaluating theevidence. In this note I question the efficacy of testing forhotshots by observing the success of males at leks of different sizes. Several authors have noted that the males most successful inattracting mates on larger leks are more successful than thebest males on smaller leks (Westcott and Smith, 1997  相似文献

Previously we have shown that hyperosmolarity increasesNa+-myo-inositolcotransporter (SMIT) activity and mRNA levels in cultured endothelialcells. Because hyperosmolarity and cytokines, such as tumor necrosisfactor- (TNF-), activate similar signal transduction pathways, weexamined the effect of TNF- on SMIT mRNA levels andmyo-inositol accumulation. In contrastto the effect of hyperosmolarity, TNF- caused a time- andconcentration-dependent decrease in SMIT mRNA levels andmyo-inositol accumulation. The effectof TNF- on myo-inositolaccumulation was found in large-vessel endothelial cells (derived fromthe aorta and pulmonary artery) and cerebral microvessel endothelialcells. In bovine aorta and bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells,TNF- activated nuclear factor (NF)-B. TNF- also increasedceramide levels, and C2-ceramidemimicked the effect of TNF- on SMIT mRNA levels andmyo-inositol accumulation in bovineaorta endothelial cells. Pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate, genistein, and7-amino-1-chloro-3-tosylamido-2-hepatanone, compounds that can inhibitNF-B activation, partially prevented the TNF--induced decrease inmyo-inositol accumulation. The effectof TNF- on myo-inositolaccumulation was also partially prevented by the protein kinase Cinhibitor calphostin C but not by staurosporine. These studiesdemonstrate that TNF- causes a decrease in SMIT mRNA levels andmyo-inositol accumulation in culturedendothelial cells, which may be related to the activation of NF-B.
