The specific shape of the relationship between plant diversity and productivity and the causal mechanism(s) behind the observed pattern(s) are still highly debated. Recent advances suggest that the relationship depends on several environmental variables and may change with the observational scale. In this study, a multivariate, multiscale approach was used to identify the variables that determine the relationship between species richness and annual production along a forest/old field edge in southern Québec (Canada). Various relationships between richness and production were found at different distances to the edge. In the forest, most relationships were positive and linear, while in the old field the relationship shifted from positive linear to non-significant with increasing distance from the edge. In the forest or in the old field, the shape of the relationship (all distances from the edge combined) was unimodal. Path analyses showed that species richness was determined mostly by production, which was influenced by different limiting resources, depending on the community (forest or old field). An increasing range in production created by pooling across community types can confound the resources and/or conditions determining the diversity-productivity relationship.  相似文献

The genetic consequences of a genealogical relationship between two individuals can be summarised by the probabilities of the nine possible gene identity states between their four genes at an autosomal locus. However, not all regions of the eight-dimensional simplex can be attained by any genealogical relationship, The complete problem of the attainable space of gene-identity-state probabilities remains unsolved. The origin and robustness of morphogenesis are studied by dynamical system modeling of a cell society, in which cells possessing internal chemical reaction dynamics interact with each other through their mutual interaction with diffusive chemicals in a two-dimensional medium. It is found that stem-type cells differentiate into various cell types (where a cell 'type' is defined by a type of intra-cellular dynamics) due to a dynamic instability caused by cell-cell interactions in a manner described by the isologous diversification theory. The differentiations are spatially regulated by the concentration of chemicals in the medium, while the chemical concentrations are locally influenced by the intra-cell dynamics. Through this reciprocal relationship, chemical concentrations come to exhibit spatial variation as differentiated cell types begin to emerge, and as a result the regulation exercised by the chemical concentrations become spatially inhomogeneous. This reinforces the process of differentiation, through which spatial patterns of differentiated cells appear. Within this reciprocal relationship, the concentration gradients are read and interpreted by the cell as positional information. A spatial order of cells realized in this process represents a stable state of the system governed by this reciprocal relationship, and that the developmental process through which this state is realized is robust with respect to perturbations. The dependence of the morphogenesis on history and the community effect in cell differentiation are also discussed.  相似文献

The density-dependent effect of induced plant resistance on herbivore populations depends on the relationship between the amount of herbivore damage and the level of induced resistance produced by the plant. This relationship should influence the interaction of induced resistance and herbivore population dynamics, and if the relationship varies among plant genotypes, it could be subject to natural selection by herbivores. In this study the relationship between percent leaf area damaged and level of induced resistance was characterized for four genotypes of soybeans grown in a greenhouse. Damage ranging from 8 to 92% of leaf area was imposed using Mexican bean beetle larvae, and induced resistance was measured by bioassay using Mexican bean beetle adults. The level of induced resistance was significantly affected by the amount of damage, and the level of induced resistance varied significantly among the four genotypes. There was also a marginally significant interaction of damage and plant genotype, suggesting that the form of density dependence varies among these four genotypes of soybeans. These results suggest that these genotypes of plants might affect herbivore populations differently. If this variation is heritable, the form of density-dependent effects of induced resistance has the potential to evolve in this system.  相似文献

Biomechanical optimisation models applying efficiency-based objective functions often underestimate antagonist contributions. Previous work has quantified an empirical co-activation relationship in the elbow musculature, demonstrating that implementing this relationship as a constraint in an elbow muscle force prediction model improves muscle force predictions. The current study evaluated this modified model by extrapolating the co-activation relationship to 36 novel isometric unilateral, right-handed exertions, including those requiring greater intensity of effort and performed in different postures. Surface electromyography was recorded from the elbow flexors and extensors. Novel extrapolative co-activation relationships were developed and used as constraints in a muscle force prediction model. Model predictions using both constraints were compared with empirical biophysical data. Predictions by the modified model were more consistent with biophysical data than those by the original model for the novel exertions. Novel co-activation relationships did not further enhance predictions when compared with the previous relationship, suggesting that extrapolation of the previous relationship is feasible.  相似文献

Summary The kinetics for growth on phenol by a yeast identified asCandida tropicalis was investigated in batch culture and by respirometry. The culture was tolerant of an initial phenol concentration of up to 1.5 g/l. The optimum temperature for phenol oxidation was 32°C and below this the Arrhenius relationship was obeyed. This study explored a semi-parametric method built upon reproducing kernels for estimating and testing the joint effect of a set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The kernel adopted is the identity-by-state kernel that measures SNP similarity between subjects. In this article, through simulations we first assessed its statistical power under different situations. It was found that in addition to the effect of sample size, the testing power was impacted by the strength of association between SNPs and the outcome of interest, and by the SNP similarity among the subjects. A quadratic relationship between SNP similarity and testing power was identified, and this relationship was further affected by sample sizes. Next we applied the method to a SNP-lung function data set to estimate and test the joint effect of a set of SNPs on forced vital capacity, one type of lung function measure. The findings were then connected to the patterns observed in simulation studies and further explored via variable importance indices of each SNP inferred from a variable selection procedure.  相似文献

There is a definite relationship between the phyllotactic fraction and the sympodia uniting median leaf traces in a stem. The denominator of the phyllotactic fraction is the number of sympodia in the stem, and the numerator is the number of sympodia counted in passing from the sympodium of one leaf to that of an adjacent leaf on the genetic helix. This relationship holds for species with closed as well as open vascular systems. Of the 100 shoots (93 species) whose vasculature has been reviewed from the literature only one shows no apparent relationship between the phyllotactic fraction and the vasculature. Shoots for 87 species show the relationship described above while shoots of five species have both irregular phyllotaxis and vasculature. The mathematical constraints on this relationship are shown to depend on the divergence angle and the fact that sympodia do not cross one another. That there are biological controls on this relationship in addition to the purely mathematical ones is shown by the fact that sympodial connections are almost universally made along orthostichies. These controls most likely operate on factors that influence the formation of orthostichies such as the relationship between leaf-shape and size of the apical dome.  相似文献

The modulating role of age on the relationship between physical attractiveness and cooperativeness in a prisoner's dilemma game (PDG) was investigated. Previous studies have shown that physical attractiveness is negatively related to cooperative choices among young men but not young women. Following the argument that the negative relationship between physical attractiveness and cooperation is a product of short-term mating strategies among attractive men, we predicted that this relationship is unique to young men and absent among women and older men. We tested this hypothesis with 175 participants (aged 22–69 years). The results showed that physical attractiveness was negatively related to cooperative behavior among young men but not among women or older men. We further observed that the negative relationship between physical attractiveness and cooperation among young men was particularly strong when attractiveness was judged by women.  相似文献

The relationship between the amount of work (Wlim) performed at the end of constant-power exhausting exercise and exhaustion time (tlim) has been studied for supramaximal exercise [105%, 120%, 135% and 150% of the individual maximal aerobic power, (MAP)] performed on a Monark cycle ergometer in nine men. The Wlim--tlim relationship was described by a linear relationship (Wlim = a + b . tlim). Intercept a was roughly equivalent to the work produced during a 1-min exercise performed at MAP. Slope b was equal to 79% of MAP. Intercept a has been correlated with the total amount of work (AW) performed during a 30-s all-out test supposed to assess anaerobic capacity. Intercept a was significantly (p less than 0.05) correlated with AW. The anaerobic capacity was not depleted at the end of the all-out test, as the mechanical power at the 30th s of this test was approximately equal to twice MAP. However, AW was significantly higher than intercept a. It was likely that the value of intercept a was an underestimation of the maximal anaerobic capacity because of the inertia of the aerobic metabolism. Indeed, an exponential model of the Wlim--tlim relationship, which takes the interia of the aerobic metabolism into account, shows that a linear approximation of the Wlim--tlim relationship yields a systematic underestimation of the anaerobic capacity. Consequently, intercept a of the Wlim--tlim relationship is not a more accurate estimation of the anaerobic capacity than the AW performed during a 30-s all-out test.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

1.  Connell's (1978) intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH) has been proposed as one explanation of why diversity is often highest at intermediate levels of disturbance. We used a model phytoplankton responses to environmental change (PROTECH) to investigate the validity of this hypothesis.
2. In a simulated phytoplankton assemblage of eight species, we found that the relationship between the increased intensity of a single forcing event and diversity was described by a positively skewed curve.
3. A progressive increase in forcing frequency introduced a sharp decrease in diversity at a threshold frequency. However, the highest diversity values were found at an intermediate frequency of disturbance.
4. We described the shape of this breakpoint response as like a 'cliff' and reconcile it with multiple stable-point theory. It is argued that the IDH should possibly be represented by this 'cliff' relationship, which may be applied to (or encourage the re-examination of) many previous studies.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationship of the Gram-negative, filamentous gliding bacterium Filibacter limicola was analysed by 16S rRNA oligonucleotide cataloguing. In contrast to the proposed membership of this asporogenous species in the Flexibacteriaceae, Filibacter limicola clusters phylogenetically with the Gram-positive eubacteria Bacillus pasteurii, Sporosarcina ureae and the asporogenous species Planococcus citreus. The genetic relationship is supported by several common phenotypic properties.  相似文献

Abstract. Previous studies have demonstrated relationships between spatial scale and spatial pattern and developed general hypotheses of scaling effects. Few studies, however, have examined the interactive relationship between scale and pattern-driving processes such as grazing. The goal of this study is to evaluate scale-dependent patterns across three spatial scales for three grazing intensities over 45 yr and to identify some mechanisms that may be associated with scale related differences. Correlation analysis and analysis of the coefficients of variation indicate that the relationships between units are dependent upon spatial scale and treatment. Across all grazing treatments, the relationship between units of the same scale becomes stronger as the spatial scale is increased. However, the rate of increase in the correlation coefficient is different for each treatment. The coefficient of variation responded inversely across scales with the greatest variation between small-scale units and little difference between the intermediate- and large scales. In addition to different relationships between units at each scale, differences in heterogeneity within treatments over time is illustrated by the relationship between small-scale units within each treatment and their associated larger scale units. The strongest relationship occurred in the heavily grazed treatments where correlation coefficients of small-scale units with intermediate- and large-scale units were ca. 0.60, indicating similar dynamics across scales. For the moderately grazed and ungrazed treatments this relationship varied from 0.40 to 0.47. Results from this study suggest that grazing alters scaling effects. Variability between small-scale units was greatest in the ungrazed treatment which had greater heterogeneity and less predictability than grazed treatments because of the influence of grazing on plant morphology, demography and composition. At the intermediate scale, relationships between units were fairly similar with the least variation occurring in the moderately grazed treatment. Alternatively, variation between large-scale units was greatest in the moderately grazed treatment because of the relationship between rest cycles, weather patterns, and patch grazing. Therefore, grazing can have a positive, a negative, or no influence on heterogeneity between units depending upon the scale of observation. Evaluation of long-term dynamics across these treatments at the same small spatial scale results in different variances within each treatment which may violate assumptions of some statistical and experimental designs. Therefore, evaluations of temporal dynamics should consider scale relative to the relationship between plant size, density and longevity (relative scale).  相似文献

The Florida Everglades have been invaded by an exotic weed fern, Lygodium microphyllum. Across its native distribution in the Old World tropics from Africa to Australasia it was found to have multiple location-specific haplotypes. Within this distribution, the climbing fern is attacked by a phytophagous mite, Floracarus perrepae, also with multiple haplotypes. The genetic relationship between mite and fern haplotypes was matched by an overarching geographical relationship between the two. Further, mites that occur in the same location as a particular fern haplotype were better able to utilize the fern than mites from more distant locations. From a biological control context, we are able to show that the weed fern in the Everglades most likely originated in northern Queensland, Australia/Papua New Guinea and that the mite from northern Queensland offers the greatest prospect for control.  相似文献

The initiation of a coevolutionary relationship between signal and response can be explained by either the receiver taking advantage of information inadvertently provided by the sender or the sender taking advantage of a perceptual bias in the receiver. In addition, once both signal and response are present, the exchange of information may or may not be cooperative. We examined the evolution of a signal of aggressive intent (expression of vertical bars) across all the northern swordtail fishes (Xiphophorus) in a phylogenetic context. We found that the signal was present before responses evolved, which suggests that this coevolutionary relationship was initiated by the receiver taking advantage of information inadvertently provided by the signaler. In addition, we introduce a novel method for examining the cooperative nature of signaling systems and provide some evidence to suggest that in this signaling system, receivers may be exploiting an honest signal in some species.  相似文献

The role of competitive exclusion is problematic in highly diverse ant communities where exceptional species richness occurs in the face of exceptionally high levels of behavioural dominance. A possible non-niche–based explanation is that the abundance of behaviourally dominant ants is highly patchy at fine spatial scales, and subordinate species act as insinuators by preferentially occupying these gaps—we refer to this as the interstitial hypothesis. To test this hypothesis, we examined fine-scale patterns of ant abundance and richness according to a three-tiered competition hierarchy (dominants, subdominants and subordinates) in an Australian tropical savanna using pitfall traps spaced at 2 m intervals. Despite the presence of gaps in the fine-scale abundance of individual species, the combined abundance of dominant ants (species of Iridomyrmex, Papyirus and Oecophylla) was relatively uniform. There was therefore little or no opportunity for subordinate species to preferentially occupy gaps in the foraging ranges of dominant species, and we found no relationship between the abundance of dominant ants and nondominant species richness at fine spatial scales. However, we found a negative relationship between subdominant and subordinate ants, a negative relationship between dominant and subdominant ants, and a positive relationship between dominant and subordinate ants. These results suggest that dominant species actually promote species richness by neutralizing the effects of subdominant species on subordinate species. Such indirect interactions have very close parallels with three-tiered trophic cascades in food webs, and we propose a “competition cascade” where the interactions are through a competition rather than trophic hierarchy.  相似文献

The 'maternal age effect' in human reproduction, characterized by a negative relationship between maternal age and reproductive efficiency, remains a poorly understood phenomenon. Current data suggest that oocyte physiology determines this relationship. In this review, we present a hypothesis of a mitochondrial role in the physiology of ageing in human oocytes. We suggest that the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation in the ageing human oocyte is degraded by free radical attack on the primordial oocytes residing in the ovary. Although deficiencies in oxidative phosphorylation can be accounted for in the short term by anaerobic respiration, we suggest that, in the long term, the level of oxidative phosphorylation strongly influences oocyte quality.  相似文献

The role of resource subsidies across ecosystem boundaries has emerged as an important concept in contemporary ecology. For lake ecosystems, this has led to interest in quantifying the contribution of terrestrial allochthonous carbon to aquatic secondary production. An inverse relationship between habitat area and the role of allochthonous subsidies has been documented on marine islands and assumed for lakes, yet there have been no tests of this pattern among benthic (lake bottom) consumers. Here, we used carbon stable isotopes to trace terrestrial allochthonous and benthic autochthonous carbon use by the crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus over a gradient of lake area, productivity and urbanization. Consistent with findings from terrestrial islands, habitat size dictated the importance of allochthonous subsidies, as P. leniusculus transitioned from using predominantly terrestrial carbon in small lakes to an increased reliance on autochthonous production in larger lakes. However, shoreline urbanization interacted with this pattern, particularly for small lakes where greater urbanization resulted in reduced use of allochthonous resources. As such, we provide, to our knowledge, the first confirmation of the predicted relationship between habitat size and importance of allochthonous subsidies to lake benthic consumers, but found that urbanization can interfere with this pattern.  相似文献

Food web statistics showed a complex relationship with measures of habitat variability in temporary ponds. Connectance was highest in short-duration, highly variable habitats, and lowest in habitats of intermediate duration and variability. The number of links and links/taxon increased with increasing duration. Much of the variation in the food web statistics could be explained by a strong linear relationship between number of taxa and number of links/taxon and a quadratic relationship of taxa number with the number of links. However, after accounting for this variation, there remained a relationship of duration with links and links/taxon. The relationship between the food web statistics and duration corresponded to experimental evaluations of predation in these habitats that showed an increasing importance of predation in long-duration habitats. The food web statistics, however, missed threshold effects in the relationship between predation and habitat duration. Differences in food web statistics before and after a regional drought could be explained by a decrease in taxa number after the drought. Connectance was the most robust statistic in relation to taxa number, but was also the least sensitive to changes in habitat characteristics.
