The grapevine cicada, Cicadatra alhageos (Kolenati) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), is a key pest of grapevine (Vitis spp., Vitaceae) in the Middle East. The main damage is caused by nymphs that feed on root sap, and adults that oviposit on branches. As males produce sound to attract females, one of the control methods can be disruption of sexual communication. Disruptive effects of acoustic playbacks on singing males were studied. Signals (0.5–10 kHz) were broadcast to disrupt male calling behavior. Playback of acoustic signals interrupted male sexual signalling. To reduce female oviposition behavior in the field, an experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design with two treatments (control vs. acoustic broadcasting) and four replications over a period of 3 years. Playback of disruption signals in the field reduced female oviposition on grapevine branches that were close to the signal source. Therefore, application of acoustic stimuli may be an effective and low‐cost control method against grapevine cicada. 相似文献

The incidence and transmissibility of Flavescence dorée phytoplasma (FDP) in populations of the vector Scaphoideus titanus Ball (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) were investigated by periodically collecting nymphs and adults of the leafhopper species in four vineyards with high incidence of Flavescence dorée (FD)‐diseased grapevines. Insects were tested individually for FDP with an ELISA procedure, after transmission assays to broadbean seedlings and further transmission to grapevine cuttings. No transmission occurred when early or middle instar nymphs were used to inoculate broadbeans, although a limited number of fifth‐instar nymphs and young adults transmitted the pathogen to broadbean seedlings. However, the same batches of insects transmitted FDP more efficiently to grapevine cuttings during prolonged inoculation periods, confirming the existence of a latent period before infected insects become infective. The proportions of ELISA‐positive individuals in the three categories of insects used for transmission assays reflected the rate of FDP transmission to grapevine cuttings. According to the data obtained by ELISA and from field sampling of first‐instar nymphs, we adapted the proportions of nymph hatching, of infected leafhoppers, and of infective leafhoppers (assuming a conservative latent period in the vector of 30 days) to logistic models as a function of degree‐days. We then discussed the possible use of the model developed for improving vector control decisions in FD‐infected vineyards. 相似文献

Survival, fecundity, and body mass of Amplicephalus curtulus influenced by ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma ulmi’ (16SrV‐A) infection 下载免费PDF全文
The leafhopper Amplicephalus curtulus Linnavuori & DeLong (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) can transmit ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma ulmi’ (16SrV‐A) from a native Chilean shrub, Ugni molinae Turcz. (Myrtaceae), to ryegrasses. A recent study showed that this phytoplasma reduced the total protein content and the activity of detoxifying enzymes in A. curtulus, which could also affect its vector fitness. This study evaluated the effect of ‘Ca. Phytoplasma ulmi’ on the longevity, fecundity, and body mass of A. curtulus. Both females and males were exposed to ‘Ca. Phytoplasma ulmi’‐infected plants for 96 h, whereas a control group remained unexposed. Quartiles from adult emergence to 75% (t75), 50% (t50), and 25% (t25) survival rates were determined for each leafhopper survival distribution. The dry weight was also established at the end of the experiment. The adult lifespan of phytoplasma‐infected males and females was significantly lower than that of the uninfected leafhoppers in quartile survival distributions t50 and t25. The phytoplasma‐infected males and females lived 3 and 4 weeks less than uninfected ones in the last quartile, respectively. Fecundity was established by number of nymphs per female (in four periods) in phytoplasma‐infected and uninfected assays. In general, the weekly pattern of the number of nymphs per phytoplasma‐infected female was lower than that of uninfected leafhoppers; it was 37% lower at the end of the experiment. Phytoplasma‐infected females weighed significantly less (11%) than uninfected individuals. Phytoplasma‐infected males weighed 8% less than uninfected ones, but this difference was not significant. Our data indicated that ‘Ca. Phytoplasma ulmi’ negatively affected the fitness of A. curtulus, and nymphs produced by phytoplasma‐infected females varied over time, which may influence the disease dynamics in nature or in field crops. 相似文献

Abstract. The stink bugs Acrosternum impicticorne, Euschistus heros, Piezodorus guildinii and Thyanta perditor (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) feed and mate on the same host plants and constitute major components of the soybean pest complex in Brazil. During mating, they communicate with species and sex-specific vibratory signals whose spectral properties are characteristic of the subfamily Pentatominae. Songs differ between species in the time structure and amplitude modulation of their units. The repertoire of A. impicticorne, E. heros and T. perditor fits into the scheme described for most investigated stink bugs: females call with a sequence of pulses that differ between species in their duration and repetition rate, and males respond with courtship songs of species-specific temporal structure and amplitude modulation of complex pulse trains. Female calling and male courtship songs are the main constituents of vibratory communication between sexes in the mating period. The other vibratory emissions appear to represent either transitional songs, support recognition during close-range courtship, or are involved in male rivalry. The first recorded vibratory emissions of P. guildinii confirm that the genus Piezodorus represents an exception within the Pentatominae. Irregularly repeated female vibratory signals of P. guildinii do not trigger typical male courtship responses as they would in the small stink bugs Holcostethus strictus and Murgantia histrionica. On the other hand, complex rivalry with extensive frequency modulation of pulses, as also described in Piezodorus lituratus, opens a new insight into the role of vibratory communication in stink bugs. 相似文献

Abstract Indian meal moths, Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), have ears which are sensitive to high‐frequency calls produced by echolocating, insectivorous bats. The influence of artificially generated, high‐intensity, ultrasound signals (25 kHz, 106 dB SPL at 1 m distance) on different parameters involved in the odour‐mediated mating behaviour of this species and its potential use in population control was investigated. All moths flying towards olfactory cues in flight tunnel experiments reacted strongly to a 1 s ultrasound pulse by cessation of flight and falling out of the odour plume. The source contact proportion of both male moths orienting towards the female‐produced sex pheromone and of mated female moths orienting towards an oviposition cue was reduced by 40%, compared to unexposed moths. Calling females responded to the sound by retraction of the ovipositor or by falling to the ground. Long‐term exposure to repetitive pulses of ultrasound suppressed female calling by up to 27%. Furthermore, mating in plastic tents was disrupted by up to 58% in ultrasound‐treated tents using different sound regimens, compared to control tents. The results are discussed in relation to the potential use of ultrasound technology for the population control of pyralid stored product pests. 相似文献

Abstract. Males of the harlequin bug, Murgantia histrionica (Hahn), produce five different vibrational songs, whereas females produce one song. Songs differ from those of other stink bugs primarily in their species‐specific temporal characteristics. The broad band male courtship songs of M. histrionica are achieved by a combination of different frequency modulated and/or narrow band subunits, with several higher harmonic frequencies. Males rather than females initiate substrate‐borne vibrational communication, and the longer‐range calling songs found typically in other pentatomid species are lacking. Interindividual differences in song temporal and spectral characteristics are discussed. Transmission of vibrational songs through a cabbage head is more efficient along veins than along lamina. Attenuation of signals transmitted through veins is low and similar to that reported previously for plant stalks. On the leaf vein, distances between peak amplitude minima and maxima are different for the dominant and subdominant frequencies. At any distance from the vibration source, a different relationship between spectral peak amplitudes can be recorded. Resolution of these differences, together with velocity differences between signals recorded on the vein and lamina, may help small stink bugs to estimate distance and to locate each other on a plant. 相似文献

Increasing intrafield plant diversity has been shown to regulate pest populations in various agroecosystems. Among the suggested mechanisms for this bottom-up pest control, the disruptive crop hypothesis states that herbivores' abilities to locate and colonize their host plants are reduced by the presence of non-host plants. Under laboratory conditions, we evaluated how intercropping wheat and legumes modifies the behaviour of apterous cereal aphids, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in terms of host plant location and population growth. We compared two intercropping systems – soft winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), associated with winter pea, Pisum sativum L., or with white clover, Trifolium repens L. (both Fabaceae) – and sole stands of soft winter wheat. Aphids needed more time to locate their wheat host plant and then spent less time on wheat when it was intercropped with clover. At the population level, and accounting for host plant biomass, only intercropping wheat with clover significantly reduced aphid densities on wheat, as this was particularly disruptive to S. avenae behaviour and population growth. Our laboratory study points out that the species used as non-host plants and their density are important parameters that should be taken into account in field studies on intercropping systems. 相似文献

Animal communication is a complex behavior that is influenced by abiotic and biotic factors of the environment. Glassy‐winged sharpshooters (GWSS), Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), primarily use vibrational signaling for courtship communication. Because GWSS is a major pest, transmitting the plant pathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al., interruption of communication is a possible avenue for control. Playback of white noise, pre‐recorded female signals, and artificial female noise (continuously overlapping female signals) significantly reduced mating of GWSS when compared to silent control mating trials. Furthermore, to begin to determine the mechanism underlying playback control, female signaling activity was recorded in the presence of stimuli. In response to playback of female signals, females signaled (duet‐like) more often than females tested in the absence of playback. After the first playback, almost two‐thirds of females signaled a response within 3 s. Additionally, one‐third of the females signaled within 1 s after cessation of white noise, and significantly more in the time periods following noise termination. Results highlight how GWSS responds to differing competitive disturbances in the environment and lays important ground work that possibly could be used to develop pesticide‐free control methods. 相似文献
