Associations between different species of nematodes and stem-boring larvae were studied over two years. Howardula oscinellae was rarely found in stem-boring larvae. Usually mermithids were also uncommon, but in one Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiforum) variety trial over 12.5% of stem-boring larvae were attacked, with different levels of parasitism in larvae from the different ryegrass varieties. Panagrolaimus rigidus nematodes were also identified from stem-boring larvae and Oscinella frit larvae were the most common host. Greater infestation levels of P. rigidus were found in larvae from grazed swards than from cut swards. P. rigidus may cause the death of some stem-boring larvae.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rates were measured on light saturated, fully-expanded leaves in pure swards of Lolium perenne and Lolium multiflorum during late summer using 14-carbon dioxide. These swards were defoliated by cutting at three heights of 3, 6 and 9 cm above the ground. The photosynthetic rates of leaves on tillers in swards cut constantly 3 cm above ground level were higher than those of leaves in swards cut constantly 9 cm above ground level. Additional treatments with various sequences of cuts 3, 6 and 9 cm above ground level were designed to reduce damage to the growing points of tillers whilst ensuring satisfactory harvesting of the shoots. The photosynthetic rates of leaves on tillers cut to various heights above ground level at successive harvests were intermediate between those of similar leaves in the constantly low and high cut swards. The rates of photosynthesis of Italian ryegrass leaves were higher than those of perennial ryegrass leaves for a short time after defoliation of the constantly high cut swards. However, these perennial ryegrass leaves quickly adapted their rates of photosynthesis to the higher irradiances they received after cutting. Thus grass species differing in morphology adjust to management practices by the use of different photosynthetic strategies.  相似文献

The distance stem boring dipterous larvae e.g. Oscinella frit L. migrate in direct drilled Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) was investigated. First, adjacent contrasting swards of Italian ryegrass or Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata) were grown which were, respectively, expected to be either infected with large populations of larvae or likely to be free of larvae. Sampling revealed that these expectations were realised. Swards were then desiccated by herbicide, and subsequently direct drilled with Italian ryegrass. Over 50% of the larvae in original, infested part of the sward migrated to infest tillers of the newly sown ares. The distance larvae migrated was gauged by assessing how far they were found from the perimeter of a previously uninfested area which had been reseeded. Most larvae migrated 20 cm or less, but a small proportion appeared to migrate several metres, apparently passing many suitable host tillers as they did so.deceased September 1989  相似文献

The growth of simulated swards of Italian and perennial ryegrass, artificially infected with ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) or RMV-free, was investigated. During the build up of RMV infection, dry-matter yield was usually decreased in infected swards, and the effect was confirmed when single vegetative regrowths of swards were investigated in detail. The primary cause of lower yields in RMV-infected swards appears to be a decrease in net canopy photosynthesis (maximum decrease about 50%) and an associated increase in dark respiration (maximum increase about 50%). The decrease in net canopy photosynthesis is due primarily to a lowered rate of net photosynthesis of constituent leaves within the canopy. A secondary effect of RMV infection is to decrease tillering (maximum decrease about 30%) which results in a change in canopy structure and in particular a lower leaf area index. In the present experiments, lower light utilization by the swards is less important than the decrease in leaf photo-synthetic efficiency in lowering yield.  相似文献

Mixing the ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) resistant perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cv. Endura with the susceptible Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum) cv. RvP decreased infection of RvP wth RMV from 37% when grown alone to 22% when mixed. However, Endura yielded less than RvP and there was no yield benefit from mixing the two cultivars. Mixing red clover (Trifolium pratense) cv. Hungaropoly with RvP had no detectable effect on RMV incidence in RvP but did decrease the incidence of red clover necrotic mosaic virus in Hungaropoly from 9% to 1% and of white clover mosaic virus from 53-5% to 41%. The yield of the mixture was equal to that of RvP grown alone but given nitrogen fertiliser. The numbers of eriophyid mites, including Abacarus hystrix the vector of RMV, on ryegrass leaves were similar in pure and mixed swards. It is concluded that with herbage crops, the common practice of sowing mixtures of species may help control virus diseases.  相似文献

A perennial ryegrass sward was established in the autumn of 1989 in an enclosed 0.3 ha site and was exposed to captive wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) grazing. Rabbit numbers were varied from 16 rabbits ha-1 in winter to 55 rabbits ha-1 corresponding to natural fluctuations in the field. The original sward was grown for three seasons (1989/1990 to 1990/1991) and a range of grazing regimes imposed. In 1989/1990 four grazing regimes were arranged in a replicated split block design in the experimental area. These were ungrazed, winter grazed, spring grazed and totally grazed. In the second year of the experiment all plots were exposed to grazing with the exception of the originally protected plots. This was to examine the effects of longer-term grazing damage on a ryegrass sward. In the final year half of all treatments were protected to study recovery of a sward which had been damaged previously. The remainder of the plots were exposed to grazing. Three cuts were harvested in each year and the productivity assessed in terms of yield and botanical composition. There was a significant reduction in ryegrass proportion in grazed swards following the first winter of grazing, while clover, other grasses and weeds were enhanced. The promotion of clover content in grazed swards was a feature throughout the 3 yr of the study. In the second year, protection of grazed swards led to a restoration of yields, although the botanical composition remained altered. The exposure of previously ungrazed plots in the final year of the experiment showed that these swards were particularly attractive to rabbits and they suffered the greatest yield losses relative to the protected plots at the first cut in 1991. In this year dry weather conditions were experienced following the first cut and demonstrated that yield losses are exacerbated when rabbit grazing is compounded with adverse growing conditions. The results overall indicate that protection of ryegrass swards at the establishment phase is important, but that a degree of recovery is possible by providing protection at a later stage, although the ryegrass component is still impaired in swards which suffer early damage.  相似文献

Isolated cell envelopes from the leaf mesophyll of Italian ryegrass were examined in a transmission electron microscope equippedwith an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Silicon was detectedin these walls at an estimated concentration of 1–2 percent. Samples were also subjected to a range of techniques, for the removal of organic matter, which confirmed the presenceof silica throughout the cell walls. The amounts of organic matter in the stubble, litter, root and soil macro-organic matter fractions of two swards of perennial ryegrass that had received normal applications of either fertilizer or cattle urine were, on average for the four fractions, about 3000, 500, 11,500 and 8,800 kg ha−1. The swards had been established 8 or 15 years previously and each was sampled at intervals over a period of about one year. The amounts of N contained in the four fractions were, on average, 68, 12, 249 and 240 kg ha−1, a total of 569 kg N ha−1. With other swards, increasing rates of application of fertilizer N were found to have little effect on the amounts of organic matter in stubble and roots. Concentrations of N in the organic matter of the stubble and roots, however, increased significantly with increasing rate of fertilizer application, though, with stubble, moderate rates of application had little effect. Assessments based on these data, together with other published information, indicate that the amount of N mineralized from the combined stubble, litter, root and macro-organic matter fractions during the first year after ploughing may range from about 40 kg to at least 360 kg N ha−1 depending on the age of the sward and its recent management. The amount mineralized is likely to increase with age of sward, with increasing rate of fertilizer N and with utilisation by grazing rather than cutting.  相似文献

In a field experiment at Hurley, small areas of old ryegrass sward, known to be infected with ryegrass mosaic virus (RMV) were partially surrounded by newly-sown Italian ryegrass. The experiment was harvested by mowing on five occasions. Samples of Italian ryegrass taken when it was 11 months old showed a very marked increase in the levels of RMV close to the areas of old sward. Thus, 84% of the Italian ryegrass plants bordering the old sward to the north contained RMV, compared with 63% of plants only 2.7 m away. The corresponding values to the south were 68% and 39%. The much higher values encountered to the north are presumed to be caused by the movement of the mite vector of RMV (Abacarus hystrix) in relation to the prevailing wind. Two different mowers were used, a rotary mower and a reciprocating knife mower. We could demonstrate no increase in the level of RMV as a result of mowing from the infected sward and on to the new sowing and could demonstrate no difference in the infection levels as a result of using the different mowers. We conclude that in mown swards migration by the mite is responsible for all or nearly all of very local spread of RMV.  相似文献

The influence of P deficiency on the utilization of two sources of N, mineral N (exogenous N) and reserved N (endogenous N), for regrowth of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) was studied. P-sufficient (+P) or P-free (−P) nutrition solution was applied from 7 days before defoliation to 24 days of regrowth and the N flows derived from two different N sources within the plant were quantified by 15N pulse-chase labeling. Shoot regrowth significantly reduced by 12 days of regrowth, while root growth was more in −P plants. Inorganic P (Pi) concentration was highly reduced by P deprivation more in the stubble and regrowing shoots and less in the roots. At defoliation, P deprivation had induced a higher accumulation for all N compounds in the stubble and for amino acids in the roots. The previously incorporated 15N in stubble and roots as nitrate and amino acids was much decreased in −P plants especially for the first 6 days of regrowth. Total N content in the regrowing leaves was not significantly different between +P and −P plants, but percentage contribution of remobilized N for total leaf N formation was significantly higher in −P plants (78%) than in +P plants (69%) at 6 days of regrowth. From day 12, the utilization of both endogenous and exogenous N was apparently inhibited in −P plants.  相似文献

Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) is the most important leaf disease in forage ryegrasses (Lolium spp.). In order to evaluate the stability in space and time of crown rust resistance a multisite rust evaluation trial was established by the European breeders association Eucarpia ( Fodder Crops Section). The same seed lots of 33 perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and 18 Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) varieties were sown in April 2001, 2004 and 2007 at 27 European sites. This paper reports the temporal ranking of the ryegrass varieties for their crown rust susceptibility at the Belgian site and compares this ranking with the mean ranking over the European sites. The crown rust susceptibility was scored in September of each sowing year and of the year after. The rankings of both the perennial and the Italian ryegrass varieties were well correlated between the successive yearly observations at each sowing period. Also the rankings of the varieties of both species were similar over the 3 sowing periods. The rankings at the Belgian site corresponded very well with the mean ranking over the European sites. The crown rust resistance in ryegrass seems to be durable and consistent over a great part of Europe.  相似文献

A DRIS model for perennial ryegrass, based on data collected from a glasshouse experiment, was used to diagnose the nutrient sufficiency status of perennial ryegrass swards growing in field situations. Initially, DRIS overestimated the N and P status of these swards and underestimated their S status. However, by calibrating the model outputs on the basis of actual sward dry matter yield responses to specific fertiliser inputs, correction factors were evaluated, and the nutrient indices modified to reflect the nutritional status of swards in field situations.Modified DRIS diagnoses of the N, P, K and S status of swards were compared with those made using the critical value approach. DRIS proved to be as reliable as the critical value approach at diagnosing N deficiency (both approaches having reliability scorings of 90%), but was superior to the latter at diagnosing P, K and S deficiencies, having reliability scorings of 100% (P), 90% (K) and 70% (S), compared with scorings of only 0% (P), 80% (K) and 30% (S), for the critical value approach.

The effects of root feeding by larvae of Sitona hispidulus (F.) (a common weevil pest of white clover) on the rate of transfer of nitrogen between plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were investigated using a nutrient slant board technique. Clover plants, labelled with 15N were grown adjacent to ryegrass plants and were either infested with Sitona larvae or not infested. Ryegrass plants associated with the infested clover plants had a significantly higher dry matter yield and nitrogen content (75% and 74% respectively) than the uninvested plants, after 33 days exposure to insect herbivory. It was concluded that root feeding insects could play an important role in the cycling of nitrogen in grass/clover swards.  相似文献

Simulated swards of Lolium perenne cv. S.23 growing in the fieldwere shaded at various stages of regrowth during August andSeptember, when insolation was most likely to be limiting. Reductionof ambient illumination to 50 per cent for periods up to 24days had little effect on the current production of herbage(mainly leaf blade), which progressed at the expense of rootand stubble growth. After defoliation, however, previously shadedswards transferred to full light regrew relatively slowly. Leafarea and leaf extension were increased by shading, but leafappearance rates were only slightly affected. Shading decreasedtiller densi ties, and hence stubble yields, but did not affectmean tiller weights. The dangers of relating herbage yield tocurrent rates of insolation and photosynthesis, and the relevanceof these findings to other grass varieties are discussed.  相似文献

Regrowth after cutting and the distribution of nitrogen (N),phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in different plant organs ofwhite clover and perennial ryegrass growing in pure or mixedswards were investigated under field conditions in a soil witha low-to-moderate availability of P and K. In all treatments, white clover constituted more than 70% of the above-ground biomassin the mixed swards. The petioles were the dominant pool ofdry matter throughout regrowth and contained the greatest amountsof N, P and K. Increased supply of P and K increased the growthof ryegrass, but not that of white clover in the mixed swards. The increased competition from ryegrass led to a decline inthe yield of white clover laminae as well as in the N contentper unit of dry matter in laminae, petioles and stolons. TheP content of all white clover organs also declined followingP application to the mixed swards, whereas K application increasedtheir K contents. In the pure swards of ryegrass and white clover, yields and contents of N, P and K in the dry matter were eithernot affected or increased following P and K application. Itwas concluded that commonly-used defoliation heights may remove80% or more of the nutrient and dry matter pools located inthe petioles but the remaining quantities of dry matter andnutrients in the petioles will normally exceed the correspondingquantities in the stolons. The present two field experiments, involving plots of Italian ryegrass sown in 1976, 1980 and 1984 confirmed results of earlier work in which the yield and persistence of Italian ryegrass was greatly increased by the application of pesticide. A range of pesticide treatments were used. The responses to application of permethrin applied three times per year average 8% for the three years of the first experiment and 5% for the five years of the second experiment. Such responses appeared cost-effective, but the overall environmental impact of such applications is not known.  相似文献

Increasing plant species diversity has been proposed as a means for enhancing annual pasture productivity and decreasing seasonal variability of pasture production facing more frequent drought scenarios due to climate change. Few studies have examined how botanical complexity of sown swards affects cow performance. A 2-year experiment was conducted to determine how sward botanical complexity, from a monoculture of ryegrass to multi-species swards (MSS) (grasses-legumes-forb), affect pasture chemical composition and nutritive value, pasture dry matter (DM) intake, milk production and milk solids production of grazing dairy cows. Five sward species: perennial ryegrass (L as Lolium), white clover and red clover (both referred to as T as Trifolium because they were always sown together), chicory (C as Cichorium) and tall fescue (F as Festuca) were assigned to four grazing treatments by combining one (L), three (LT), four (LTC) or five (LTCF) species. Hereafter, the LT swards are called mixed swards as a single combination of ryegrass and clovers, whereas LTC and LTCF swards are called MSS as a combination of at least four species from three botanical families. The experimental area (8.7 ha) was divided into four block replicates with a mineral nitrogen fertilisation of 75 kg N/ha per year for each treatment. In total, 13 grazing rotations were carried out by applying the same grazing calendar and the same pasture allowance of 19 kg DM/cow per day above 4 cm for all treatments. Clover represented 20% of DM for mixed and MSS swards; chicory represented 30% of DM for MSS and tall fescue represented 10% of DM for LTCF swards. Higher milk production (+1.1 kg/day) and milk solids production (+0.08 kg/day) were observed for mixed swards than for ryegrass swards. Pasture nutritive value and pasture DM intake were unaffected by the inclusion of clover. Pasture DM, organic matter and NDF concentrations were lower for MSS than for mixed swards. Higher milk production (+0.8 kg/day), milk solids production (+0.04 kg/day) and pasture DM intake (+1.5 kg DM/day) were observed for MSS than for mixed swards. These positive effects of MSS were observed for all seasons, but particularly during summer where chicory proportion was the highest. In conclusion, advantages of grazing MSS on cow performance were due to the cumulative effect of improved pasture nutritive value and increased pasture DM intake that raised milk production and milk solids production.  相似文献

The effect of clipping height on ryegrass regrowth was investigated by examining the roles of several plant hormones. Our study consisted of three treatment conditions: (1) darkness over whole plants, (2) darkness only over stubble leaf sheaths, and (3) light over whole plants. Results showed that under darkness over whole plant, low stubble height resulted in low leaf regrowth biomass. Similar leaf regrowth biomass was observed under conditions of darkness only over stubble leaf sheaths as well as light over whole plants. Each unit weight of stubble at different clipping heights has relatively similar potential of providing stored organic substance for leaf regrowth. Therefore, regrowth index, calculated as newly grown leaf biomass divided by unit stubble weight, was used to evaluate regrowth capacity at different clipping heights under minimal influence of organic substances stored in stubbles. Under light over whole plants and single clipping, low stubble height and high stubble height with root thinning resulted in low leaf biomass and high regrowth index. On the other hand, under light over whole plants and frequent clipping high leaf biomass and regrowth index were observed in high stubble height. In addition, we found that leaf zeatin and zeatin riboside (Z + ZR) affected ryegrass regrowth and that roots regulated leaf Z + ZR concentration. Thus, our results indicate that root-derived cytokinin concentration in leaves influences ryegrass regrowth at different clipping heights.  相似文献

Effects of cutting to 3 or 6 cm stubble height at frequenciesof 1, 2 or 4 weeks were investigated in young, vegetative, spacedplants of prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth), a tetraploidWesterwolds ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Plants were grown for 8 weekson nutrient solution in a growth cabinet at day/night temperaturesof 15/10°C and in a short photoperiod. Leaf appearance, site filling and tiller numbers were all reduced by both increasedcutting frequency and a lower cutting height. The extent ofthese reductions was least in prairie grass and greatest inWesterwolds ryegrass. Relative growth rates in all species respondedin a similar manner with more frequent cutting and a lower cuttingheight. Cutting frequency had the greatest effect on growthrates, although the effect of cutting height increased withtime. Results confirm general recommendations of long intervalsbetween defoliations to achieve high yields for vegetative prairiegrass, but the relative amounts of dry matter harvested underthe different cutting regimes may be no different to that obtainedin ryegrass. Stubble height was of lesser importance in determiningyields. A typical U-shaped curve for depletion and recovery in water-solublecarbohydrates occurred after defoliation in all species, butlevels remained low at frequent cutting. Water-soluble carbohydratelevels in stubble and roots were higher in prairie grass. Regrowthat the end of the experiment was highly correlated with totalstubble and root weights (r = 0.84), while regrowth per tillershowed a good correlation with water-soluble carbohydrate content, although the response varied between species.
