The anaerobic biodegradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) was investigated during the granulation process by reducing the hydraulic retention time, increasing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and CT loadings in a 2l laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Anaerobic unacclimated sludge and glucose were used as seed and primary substrate, respectively. Granules were developed 4 weeks after start-up, which grew at an accelerated rate for 8 months, and then became fully grown. The effect of operational parameters such as influent CT concentrations, COD, CT loading, food to biomass ratio and specific methanogenic activity (SMA) were also considered during granulation. The granular sludge cultivated had a maximum diameter of 2.1 mm and SMA of 1.6 g COD/g total suspended solid (TSS) day. COD and CT removal efficiencies of 92 and 88% were achieved when the reactor was firstly operating at CT and COD loading rates of 17.5 mg/l day and 12.5 g/l day, respectively. This corresponds to hydraulic retention time of 0.28 day and food to biomass ratio of 0.5 g COD/g TSS day. Kinetic coefficients of maximum specific substrate utilization rate, half velocity coefficient, growth yield coefficient and decay coefficient were determined to be 2.4 × 10–3 mg CT/TSS day–1, 1.37 mg CT/l, 0.69 mg TSS/mg CT and 0.046 day–1, respectively for CT biotransformation during granulation.  相似文献

A laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was operated at 35 °C for over 200 days to investigate the granulation mechanism during tetrachloroethylene (TCE) biodegradation. Anaerobic, unacclimated sludge and glucose were used as seed and primary substrate, respectively. TCE-degrading granules developed after 1.5 months of start-up. They grew at an accelerated pace for 7 months. The TCE-degrading granules had a maximum diameter of 2.5 mm and specific methanogenic activity of 1.32 g chemical oxygen demand (COD) g–1 total suspended solid (TSS) day–1. 94% COD and 90% TCE removal efficiencies were achieved when the reactor was operating at loading rates as high as 160 mg TCE l–1 day–1 and 14 g COD l–1 day–1, after 230 days of continuous operation.  相似文献

The C:N ratio of the pharmaceutical wastewaters is usually suitable for a combination of the anaerobic pretreatment with the high COD removal and aerobic posttreatment with the efficient biological N removal. This kind of anaerobic-aerobic process was tested in semipilot scale by using a UASB reactor and an activated sludge system with a predenitrification (total volume 100 1). It was found that at a total HRT of 2.3 days an average of 97.5% of COD and 73.5% of total N was removed. The UASB reactor was operated at 30°C with a volumetric loading rate of 8.7 kg.m-3.d-1, the efficiency of COD removal was 92.2%. The processes, which take part in the biological removal of nitrogen, especially the nitrification, were running with lower rates than usually observed in aerobic treatment systems.Abbreviations AAO anaerobic anoxic oxic configuration - AOO anaerobic oxic oxic configuration - B V volumetric organic loading rate (kg COD.m-3. d-1) - dB x specific COD removal rate (mg COD. g-1 VSS. d-1) - DNR denitrification rate (mg N–NO3. g-1 VSS. h-1) - ECOD efficiency of COD removal (%) - HRT hydraulic retention time (d) - NR nitrification rate (mg N–NO3. g-1 VSS. h-1) - R recirculation ratio (%) - SBP specific biogas production (m3.kg-1 removed COD) - SRT solids retention time; sludge age (d) - SS suspended solids (g.1-1) - UASB upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor - VSS volatile suspended solids (g.1-1)  相似文献

A fluidized-bed reactor, with sand as the carrier and ethanol as the carbon and electron source, was investigated for the biological denitrification of ground water. The paper concentrates on the reactor's kinetics, with special emphasis on nitrite as the intermediate product. Intrinsic zero-order kinetic parameters for both nitrate and nitrite were determined by batch and continuous experiments. Values for the maximum specific nitrate and nitrite removal rates of 11 g and 6 g NO inf3 sup– (g volatile suspended solids)–1 day–1, respectively, were obtained. These values were used to interpret nitrate and nitrate concentration profiles in an experimental fluidized-bed reactor operating at different conditions of hydraulic loading and retention time.  相似文献

Dairy wastewaters containing elevated fat and grease levels (868 mg l–1) were treated in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) and resulted in effluents of high turbidity (757 nephelometric turbidity units), volatile suspended solids up to 944 mg l–1 and COD removal below 50%. When the same dairy wastewater was pre-treated with 0.1% (w/v) of fermented babassu cake containing Penicillium restrictum lipases, turbidity and volatile suspended solids were decreased by 75% and 90%, respectively, and COD removal was as high as 90%.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a 20 l lab scale anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) combining sludge blanket in the lower part and filter in the upper part under varying organic loading rates (OLRs) in order to study biodegradation of olive mill effluent (OME). For this purpose, some parameters, such as total phenols, effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and pH in the influent and effluent, and removal efficiencies for those parameters (except pH) were continuously monitored throughout the experimental period of 477 days. Eleven different organic loadings between 0.45 and 32 kg COD m−3 day−1 were imposed by either varying influent COD or hydraulic retention time (HRT). The results demonstrated that the AHR reactor could tolerate high influent COD concentrations. Removal efficiencies for the studied pollution parameters were found to be as follows: COD, 50–94%; total phenol, 39–80%; color, 0–54%; and suspended solids, 19–87%. The levels of VFAs in the effluent, which was principally acetate, butyrate, iso-butyrate, and propionate, varied between 10 and 2005 mg l−1 depending upon OLRs. A COD removal efficiency of 90% could be achieved as long as OLR is kept at a level of less than 10 kg COD m−3 day−1. However, a secondary treatment unit for polishing purposes is necessary to comply with receiving media discharge standards.  相似文献

A mixed microbial culture capable of growing aerobically on tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a sole carbon and energy source was used as the inoculum in a 10 l working volume membrane bioreactor. Following start-up, the reactor was operated in batch mode for 24 h and then switched to continuous feed with 100% biomass recycle. On average, greater than 96% of THF fed to the reactor was removed during the 8-month study. THF loading rates ranged from 0.62 to 9.07 g l–1 day–1 with a hydraulic retention time of 24 h. THF concentrations as high as 800 mg/l were tolerated by the culture. Biomass production averaged 0.28 kg total suspended solids/kg chemical oxygen demand removed, i.e., comparable to a conventional wastewater treatment process. Periodic batch wasting resulted in a solids retention time of 7–14 days. Reactor biomass typically ranged from 4 to 10 g/l volatile suspended solids and the effluent contained no solids. Pure THF-degrading cultures were isolated from the mixed culture based on morphological characteristics, Gram-staining and THF degradation. Based on 16S rDNA analysis the isolates were identified as Pseudonocardia sp. M1 and Rhodococcus ruber M2.  相似文献

An upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was operated under thermophilic conditions (55° C) for 160 days by feeding a wastewater containing sucrose as the major carbon source. The reactor exhibited a satisfactory performance due to the formation of well-settling granulated sludge, achieving a total organic carbon (TOC) removal of above 80% at an organic loading rate of 30 kg total organic C m–3 day–1. Structural and microbial properties of the methanogenic granular sludge were examined using scanning electron microscope X-ray analyses and serum vial activity tests. All the thermophilic granules developed showed a double-layered structure, comprised of a black core portion and a yellowish exterior portion. The interior cope portion contained abundant crystalline precipitates of calcium carbonate. Calcium-bound phosphorus was also present more prominently in the core portion than in the exterior portion. Methanogenic activities of the thermophilic granules both from acetate and from H2 increased with increasing vial-test temperature in the range of 55–65° C [from 1.43 to 2.36 kg CH4 chemical oxygen demand (COD) kg volatile suspended solids (VSS)–1 day–1 for acetate and from 0.85 to 1.11 kg CH4 COD kg VSS–1 day–1 for H2]. On the other hand, propionate-utilizing methanogenic activity was independent of vial-test temperature, and was much lower (0.1–0.12 kg CH4 COD kg VSS–1 day–1) than that from either acetate or H2. Acetate consumption during vial tests was considerably inhibited by the presence of H2 in the headspace, indicating that a syntrophic association between acetate oxidizers and H2-utilizing methane-producing bacteria was responsible for some portion of the overall acetate elimination by the theromophilically grown sludge.  相似文献

A 20-l packed-bed reactor filled with foamed glass beads was tested for the treatment of acetonitrile HPLC wastes. Aeration was provided by recirculating a portion of the reactor liquid phase through an aeration tank, where the dissolved oxygen concentration was kept at 6 mg/l. At a feeding rate of 0.77 g acetonitrile l–1 reactor day–1, 99% of the acetonitrile was removed; and 86% of the nitrogen present in acetonitrile was released as NH3, confirming that acetonitrile volatilization was not significant. Increasing the acetonitrile loading resulted in lower removal efficiencies, but a maximum removal capacity of 1.0 g acetonitrile l–1 reactor day–1 was achieved at a feeding rate of 1.6 g acetonitrile l–1 reactor day–1. The removal capacity of the system was well correlated with the oxygenation capacity, showing that acetonitrile removal was likely to be limited by oxygen supply. Microbial characterization of the biofilm resulted in the isolation of a Comamonas sp. able to mineralize acetonitrile as sole carbon, nitrogen and energy source. This organism was closely related to C. testosteroni (91.2%) and might represent a new species in the Comamonas genus. This study confirms the potential of packed-bed reactors for the treatment of a concentrated mixture of volatile pollutants.  相似文献

The effects of liquid recirculation on a liquefaction-acidogenic reactor in an anaerobic two-phase digesting system operating with grass-clover silage was studied during 40 days after initiating recirculation of effluent from the methanogenic reactor to the liquefaction-acidogenic reactor. An increase in alkalinity and, thus, an increase in pH from 5.2 to 6.0 occurred in the liquefaction-acidogenic reactor. During the same period, a 10-fold increase (from 0.2 to 1.9 g·l–1·h–1) in the degradation rate of mannitol and an almost 9-fold increase in the activity of hydrogenotrophic methanogens was observed. The estimated number of these bacteria increased by one order of magnitude. The average degradation rate of lactate increased 3-fold, probably as a consequence of the more efficient hydrogen consumption by the hydrogenotrophic methanogens. An observed increase in net mineralization of organic nitrogen compounds was probably the main reason for an enhanced net production of organic acids (from 0.2 to 0.9 g·l–1·d–1). The liquefaction of cellulose and hemicellulose was low from the start of recirculation (3% and 20% reduction, respectively) and did not seem to be affected by the liquid recirculation. This was in accordance with the low number of cellulose degraders (4.0·102 counts·ml–1) observed. The results from this investigation show that the initiation of liquid recirculation in silage-fed two-phase biogas processes will stimulate the activity of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in the liquefaction-acidogenic reactor. This will lead to more thermodynamically favourable conditions for acidification reactions which are dependent upon interspecies transfer of reducing equivalents.Abbreviations COD chemical oxygen demand - CSTR completely stirred tank reactor - HRT hydraulic retention time - LA-reactor liquefaction-acidogenic reactor - M-reactor methanogenic reactor - MPN most probable number - OLR organic loading rate - SMA specific methanogenic activity - SRT solids retention time - TKN total Kjeldahl nitrogen - ts total solids - tss total suspended solids - vs volatile solids - vss volatile suspended solids  相似文献

Treatment of simulated acid azo dye (C.I. Acid black 210) wastewater was studied in periodic discontinuous batch mode operation employing sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with suspended growth configuration under anoxic–aerobic–anoxic microenvironment. The performance of the reactor was evaluated at two organic loading rates (0.56 kg COD/m3-day and 0.75 kg COD/m3-day) with a total cycle period of 24 h [fill phase: 30 min; react phase: 23 h; settle phase: 15 min; decant phase: 15 min] at room temperature. The performance of SBR was assessed by monitoring both COD and colour (OD-617 nm) concentrations. Periodic discontinuous batch mode operation feasibility for dye colour removal along with simultaneous substrate (COD) removal. The performance efficiency of the system was found to depend on the operating organic loading rate. Induced anoxic microenvironment during cycle operation and persistent anoxic microenvironment in the internal layer of suspended biomass may be probable reasons for dye mineralization/reduction. Rapid startup period and non-inhibited performance at higher loading rate are some of the advantages observed in the SBR operation.  相似文献

The ability of an anaerobic hybrid reactor, treating coffee wastewater, to achieve a quick start-up was tested at pilot scale. The unacclimatized seed sludge used showed a low specific methanogenic activity of 26.47 g CH4 as chemical oxygen demand (COD)/kg volatile suspended solids (VSS) x day. This strongly limited the reactor performance. After a few days of operation, a COD removal of 77.2% was obtained at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.89 kg COD/m3 x day and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 22 h. However, suddenly increasing OLR above 2.4 kg COD/m3 x day resulted in a deterioration in treatment efficiency. The reactor recovered from shock loads after shutdowns of 1 week. The hybrid design of the anaerobic reactor prevented the biomass from washing-out but gas clogging in the packing material was also observed. Wide variations in wastewater strength and flow rates prevented stable reactor operation in the short period of the study.  相似文献

Acetamide degradation was investigated in a bench-scale upflow anaerobic sludge-blanket (UASB) reactor, successively fed with acetamide, acetate and acetamide, over a period of 343 days, at different hydraulic retention times (t HR). The reactor was seeded with the sludge previously described [Guyot et al. (1994) Appl Microbiol Biotechnol, 42:452-456], in which methanogenesis from acetamide was performed through a synergistic relationship between an acetamide-degrading, aerobic rod and methanogens. When the reactor was fed acetamide, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 86% at volumetric loads less than 1.18 kg COD m–3 day –1. At higher volumetric loads, the efficiency decreased markedly, e.g. 50.9% at a volumetric organic load of 3.39 kg COD m–3 day–1 (1 day t HR) with an accumulation of both acetamide and acetate. The same reactor, when fed with acetate at t HR 1 day, reached a high COD removal (99%). Evidence of the inhibition of acetate degradation by acetamide is presented. After a long period (135 days) without feeding the reactor with acetamide, the sludge reactor was still capable of degrading acetamide when this substrate was supplied again. It seems that the synergistic degradation of acetamide by aerobes and methanogens present in the UASB reactor sludge is stable over a long period (343 days), in spite of limiting concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the feed.  相似文献

A new hybrid reactor, the upflow blanket filter (UBF), which combined on open volume in the bottom two-thirds of the reactor for a sludge blanket and submerged plastic rings (Flexiring, Koch Inc., 235 m(2)/m(3)) in the upper one-third of the reactor volume, was studied. This UBF reactor was operated at 27 degrees C at loading rates varying from 5 to 51 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L d with soluble sugar wastewater (2500 mg COD/L). Maximum removal rates of 34 g COD/L d and CH(4) production rates of 7 vol/vol d [standard temperature and pressure (STP)] were obtained. The biomass activity was about 1.2 g COD/g volatile suspended solids per day. Conversion (based on effluent soluble COD) was over 93% with loading rates up to 26 g COD/L d. At higher loading rates conversion decreased rapidly. The packing was very efficient in retaining biomass.  相似文献

Fluidized bed reactor (FBR) technology has emerged in recent years as an attractive approach for the biotreatment of chemical industry wastestreams. A laboratory-scale FBR study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of utilizing FBR technology for the biotreatment of maleic anhydride wastewater generated during manufacturing operations. The maleic anhydride wastestream contains a mixture of maleic acid, fumaric acid, phthalic acid and di-n-butylphthalate (DBP). The FBR removed >98% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) from the wastewater at a chemical loading rate of 4.86 kg of COD m–3 bed day–1. Maleic acid, fumaric acid or phthalic acid were not detected in the FBR effluent indicating removal of these diacids. Residues of DBP adsorbed to granular activated carbon (GAC) stabilized at low levels indicating that the >99% removal efficiency for DBP in the FBR resulted from microbial degradation. Solids measurements showed microbial biomass levels on the GAC ranging from 10500 to 32400 mg L–1 and effluent solids production ranged from 0.027 to 0.041 kg solids kg–1 COD treated. This laboratory-scale study demonstrated that FBR technology was highly effective for the biotreatment of the maleic anhydride wastestream and may offer several advantages over traditional activated sludge systems.  相似文献

Summary A stepped-loading start-up regime utilising variable organic influent concentrations in the range 1650–11600 mgCOD1–1 was applied to an anaerobic fluidised bed bioreactor at 37°C. The reactor was sensitive to variable influent COD concentrations, but the stepped-loading aided rapid recovery from transient organic loading shocks. Variable effluent COD levels were produced but a COD removal efficiency of 76% was obtained at a final HRT of 0.5 d and an organic loading rate of 5.3 kg COD m–3 d–1.  相似文献

Mathematical model parameters for the methanogenic degradation of propylene glycol were estimated in a sequential manner by means of an optimization technique. Model parameters determined from an initial experimental data set using one bioreactor were then verified with the results from a second bioreactor. The aim of this work was to study the influence of influent chemical oxygen demand (COD), upflow velocity of wastewater, and cationic polymer additives in inoculum, on biomass granulation and COD removal efficiency in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for treating low strength wastewater. Statistical models were formulated based on these three variables to optimize the biomass granulation and COD removal efficiency in UASB reactors using a two-level, full factorial design. For the thick inoculum used in this study, having suspended solids (SS) >80 g/l and volatile suspended solids (VSS) to SS ratio <0.3, cationic polymer additives in the inoculum showed adverse effect on biomass granulation and COD removal efficiency. It is concluded that for such thick inoculum, granulation can be obtained while treating low strength wastewaters in UASB reactor by selecting proper combination of influent COD and liquid upflow velocity so as to represent the organic loading rate (OLR) greater than 1.0 kg COD/m(3) d. Validation of model predictions for treatment of synthetic wastewater and actual sewage reveals the efficacy of these models for enhancing granulation and COD removal efficiency.  相似文献

A thermophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was combined with a mesophilic aerobic fluidized bed (AFB) reactor for treatment of a medium strength wastewater with 2,700?mg COD?l?1. The COD removal efficiency reached 75% with a removal rate of 0.2 g COD?l?1 h?1 at an overall hydraulic retention time 14 hours. The distribution of microbial activity and its change with hydraulic retention time in the two reactors were investigated by measuring ATP concentration in the reactors and specific ATP content of the biomass. In the UASB reactor, the difference in specific ATP was significant between the sludge bed and blanket solution (0.02?mg ATP g VS?1 versus 0.85?mg ATP g VS?1) even though the ATP concentrations in these two zones were similar. A great pH gradient up to 4 was developed along the UASB reactor. Since a high ATP or biological activity in the blanket solution could only be maintained in a narrow pH range from 6.5 to 7.5, the sludge granules showed a high pH tolerance and buffering capacity up to pH 11. The suspended biomass in AFB reactor had a higher specific ATP than the biomass fixed in polyurethane carriers (1.6?mg ATP g VS?1 versus 1.1?mg ATP g VS?1), which implies a starvation status of the immobilized cells due to mass transfer limitation. The aerobes had to work under starvation conditions in this polishing reactor. The anaerobic biomass brought into AFB reactor contributed to an increase in suspended solids, but not the COD removal because of its fast deactivation under aerobic conditions. A second order kinetic model was proposed for ATP decline of the anaerobes. The results on distribution of microbial activity in the two reactors as well as its change with hydraulic retention time lead to further performance improvement of the combined anaerobic/aerobic reactor system.  相似文献

Summary Novel, laboratory-scale, high solids reactors operated under mesophilic conditions were used to study the anaerobic fermentation of processed municipal solid waste (MSW) to methane. The anaerobic digestion consortium was introduced to high solids levels through gradual adaptation. The maximum sludge solids level for stable anaerobic fermentation performance was identified as approximately 36% wt/wt. Recovery of the anaerobic consortium, following dilution of inhibitory high solids levels, was swift. Reactor mixing requirements were also studied. No significant difference in fermentation performance was observed between agitator speeds of 1 and 25 rpm. Preliminary fermentation performance tests showed that solids loading rates as high as 9.5 g VS (volatile solids) feed/L sludge.d, at 32% solids within the reactor, were possible. Under these conditions, operation was stable with an average pH of 7.8–8.0, total volatile fatty acid pools of <20 mM, and a biogas composition of 55%–60% methane.  相似文献
