The reaction of males of Aedes diantaeus to different auditory stimuli was studied in natural environment during swarming and under laboratory conditions. The males were attracted by 250-420 Hz that corresponds to the main frequencies of flight tones of sympatric females and the range of sensitivity of male Johnston's organs. Behavioural data show that in natural environment swarming males are attracted by flying conspecific and heterospecific females rather than by dead or immobilized females. Contact with heterospecific females always ended in parting of mosquitoes while contact with cospecific females resulted in pairing. Thus, swarming males of Aedes diantaeus localize females by their flight tones but recognize the females of their own species in contact.  相似文献

Four hypotheses that could explain the elaborate species-specific morphology of the clasping organs on the front legs of male Archisepsis diversiformis flies were tested: direct male–male combat, mechanical fit, male–female conflict of interests, and male stimulation of the female. Experimental modification of the shape of the male clasper and of the female wing base where the male clasped the female both strongly reduced the chances that a mount would result in copulation. This reduction was not predicted by the male–male combat hypothesis but was predicted by the others. Males in the field did nave to fight other males to remain mounted on females, as expected by the male–male combat hypothesis. Reduced male copulatory success was not due to inferior male ability to grasp and hold onto the female's wings, as predicted by the mechanical fit and male–female conflict hypotheses but to a reduction in the likelihood that the female would allow intromission, as predicted by the stimulation hypothesis. By a process of elimination, and in combination with data from a previous morphological study, the data support the hypothesis that the species-specific aspects of grasping organs in these flies function to stimulate females. Further behavioral data will be needed to test alternative possibilities.  相似文献

The majority of chironomid midges mate in swarms, where males find females by their flight sounds using specialized Johnston’s organs for acoustic perception. Males of Fleuria lacustris do not swarm and copulate on the ground. Both the flagellum and antennal fibrils are shortened and the pedicel is reduced in comparison with that typical of swarming midge species. Our results demonstrate that, in swarming midge species, the number of antennal fibrils and of A-type chordotonal sensilla in the male Johnston’s organ is by 1.33 and by 21 times higher, respectively, than in F. lacustris. Though Johnston’s organ of the latter species responds to female flight tones, it is significantly (about 70 times) less sensitive to these stimuli in comparison with the Johnston’s organ of swarming species. The decrease in the sensitivity of the Johnston’s organ in F. lacustris can be explained by the decrease in the size and the number of antennal structures, whereas their ability to perceive acoustic signals is determined by the presence of a relatively high number of A-type sensilla. Our results demonstrate that F. lacustris males are not able to search for conspecific females by perception of acoustic signals produced during the flight; however, it cannot be ruled out that females produce sounds during copulation on the substrate and thus affect male behavior.  相似文献

In nicrophorine beetles, genus Nicrophorus care their larva using small vertebrate carrion, whereas genus Ptomaucopusreproduce with small vertebrate carrion but show no parental care. Aggression and sexual behavior were examined in Ptomascopus morio and Nicrophorus quadripunctatus. Nicrophorus quadripunctatus had intense female–female as well as male–male contests. In Ptomascopus morio, by contrast, female–female aggression was rarely observed. Male–male aggression (pushing, biting, male–male mounting) in Ptomascopus morio was observed when a resource for breeding was present, whether or not a female was present. The lack of female–female aggression, and male–male aggression when resources but not females are present, suggest that the mating system of Ptomascopus morio is resource defense polygyny. Large males of Ptomascopus morio were also found to exhibit mate choice, preferring large females over small females.  相似文献

Male testosterone (T) levels are thought to be linked with the mating system, degree of parental care, and male–male aggression in reproductive contexts (The ‘challenge hypothesis’; Wingfield et al., 1990). In many species though, T increases associated with mating behavior cannot be separated from those associated with male–male aggression. We tested the challenge hypothesis on aseasonally breeding ursine colobus (Colobus vellerosus), where male–male competition is intense outside of mating contexts. Fecal samples (N = 109) were collected from > 27 subadult and adult males in seven groups during 13-months of research in Ghana in 2004–2005. Fecal T (fT) levels were determined by enzyme immunosorbant assays. Behavioral data was collected using focal-animal and ad libitum sampling. The number of receptive females in each group did not positively correlate with male fT. There was a trend for adult males to have higher fT than subadult males; however there was no effect of rank on fT. The level of male–male aggression experienced was positively correlated with fT and individual males showed higher mean fT during ‘challenge’ than during ‘non-challenge’ periods. The number of male incursions experienced positively correlated with fT whereas the number of between-group encounters did not. Males attempt to gain reproductive opportunities during incursions, thus these results support the ‘challenge hypothesis’ in C. vellerosus. Outside of mating contexts, higher male fT levels are associated with increased aggression. Male parental investment in the form of infant defense was associated with increased fT, rather than the decline expected from other forms of paternal care.  相似文献

In crickets Gryllus bimaculatus, flight has been shown to be able to promote aggressive encounters between males and to suppress escape behavior. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of flight on male behavior in male–female interactions. We found that flown males demonstrate enhanced courtship behavior. The latency of calling song was significantly shorter, while the relative total duration of singing as well as the duration of singing episodes longer in flown males than in the control. Mating rate was also significantly higher in the experimental group containing flown males. The results suggest that, in addition to previously reported effects on aggressiveness and escape, flying has a profound accelerating effect on male courtship behavior.  相似文献

Male cricket frogs,Acris crepitanscommunicate to males and females using advertisement calls, which are arranged into call groups. Calls at the middle and end, but not beginning of the call group, are modified in response to male–male aggressive interactions. We found in this field study of male cricket frogs in natural breeding choruses that the peptide hormone arginine vasotocin (AVT) not only increased the probability that males called after injections, but also caused modifications in middle and end calls to produce calls characteristic of less aggressive males. Moreover, AVT-injected males showed significantly greater increases in call dominant frequency than saline-injected males, again, a characteristic of less aggressive males. Cricket frog calls are used to both repel males and attract females, thus call changes may relate to male–male and/or male–female interactions. Saline-injected males also demonstrated significant changes in several call traits, including changes that occurred in the beginning and middle calls of the call groups, but not the end calls. AVT appeared to block some call changes produced through handling. These data suggest that AVT can influence acoustic communication in frogs in several ways, including effects on call characteristics and dominant frequency, as well as potentially blocking some handling effects.  相似文献

Intrasexual copulation and mate discrimination by Nodilittorina radiata (Gastropoda: Littorinidae) were studied on a concrete breakwater at Hakodate Bay, southern Hokkaido, Japan. Intrasexual (male–male) copulations were observed in 4.7–21.1% of copulating pairs on the shore. As females were relatively larger than males and males copulated with females larger than themselves, we hypothesized that males choose potential mates larger than themselves. However, two male mates showed no significant size preference in intrasexual copulations, suggesting that males do not choose relatively larger individuals as mates. In a laboratory mate-choice experiment, male N. radiata preferred to mate with females, indicating precopulatory sex identification. They copulated with males, however, at the frequency of 37%, perhaps because of sex misidentification.  相似文献

Coenagrion puella males search actively for mates and are not aggressive to other males. To study the role of visual cues in male–female discrimination, four types of models were used: (1) bodies of intact insects, (2) models of painted males, (3) models of male–female chimerae, and (4) models of female body parts. Abdomen coloration pattern and presence of wings were the most important cues for sexual recognition by males. Step-by-step elimination of male coloration pattern leads to an increase in the tandem response rate. A female model painted as a male repelled males like the intact male model. The absence of either the head or the thorax slightly decreased the number of tandem responses, but models without both the head and the thorax were not recognized as a mate. Abdomen thickness larger than that of a normal female decreased the attractiveness of the model. Models of the gynochrome female were significantly more attractive than models of the androchrome one. Female models containing male parts were less attractive than models without any structure at this place. Using principal-components analysis, it is shown that models repelling males usually were those containing an intact male abdomen or a female abdomen painted with blue. The results indicate that C. puella males can distinguish males from females visually by morphological structures and coloration pattern.  相似文献

Male hermit crabs perform precopulatory mate-guarding behavior during their reproductive season. As females generally cannot reject guarding attempts by males, male guarding prevents females from inspecting and choosing other male mates. However, as guarding males are often replaced by other males through competition for females during the guarding phase, females may be able to select males by delaying their copulation. To examine the possibility of female choice by hermit crabs, we investigated whether female Pagurus filholi that were being guarded in the field were ready to copulate and spawn. We found that about 30% of females guarded in the field were ready to spawn, indicating that guarded females delayed copulation with their current male. Our results suggest that by delaying copulation females may exploit male–male competition to choose dominant males. However, delaying copulation reduced the spawning potential of females. Hence, there is a trade-off between waiting for the opportunity to mate with a dominant male and decreased spawning success if females exploit male–male competition.  相似文献

North European Leptoceridae (Trichoptera) perform three types of swarming flight patterns: (1) swarming males of Athripsodesand Ceracleafly in horizontal zigzag patterns over the water surface, (2) the Mystacidesspp. perform vertical zigzag movements, and (3) the flight of males of Triaenodes unanimisMcLach. is a mixture of the horizontal and vertical zigzagging. Also three groups of pair formation behavior can be distinguished. In the first group, of Athripsodesand Ceraclea,the females fly into the male swarms, where they are grasped and carried to the riparian vegetation by the flying males with the females hanging upside-down in genitalia coupling. In the second group, a Mystacidesfemale is caught by a male, when approaching a swarm and both use their wings to fly in tandem to the shore where they copulate. In the third group, of Triaenodes bicolor(Curt.) and Oecetis lacustris(Curt.), the males fly searching for females sitting on aquatic plants and when a female is found the male lands and they copulate immediately while clinging to the plant. The different swarming and mating behaviors might have favored selection for three types of sexual dimorphism: (1) longer forewings in males than females in species which fly in copula, (2) larger eyes in males of the vertically zigzagging species, and (3) much smaller males in the group where males search for females sitting on aquatic plants. In the second group approaching females are detected by males before reaching the swarm and in the third group the female almost always mates with the male which is the first to find her. In conclusion, we suggest that females of Athripsodesand Ceracleahave a greater choice among swarming males than do females of Mystacides, T. bicolor,and O. Lacustris.  相似文献

The mbuna cichlids of Lake Malawi are a diverse, monophyletic, and recently derived clade. Sexual selection is thought to have accelerated their rapid diversification, though the mechanism by which this has occurred remains unknown. In this study, we examine the effect that male–male interactions have on female preference. We first used a short interaction experiment as a proxy for male dominance. We then measured female preference for (1) a single, isolated male; (2) a group of three, highly ranked males, relative to a group of lower ranked males; and (3) a group of three, mixed-ranked males against a similar group of mixed-rank males. We found that male dominance was highly correlated with male standard length. Female preference for male standard length and for dominance rank was significant in both isolated and group interactions. However, females only showed preference for groups of interacting males when males were segregated by dominance rank, not when groups were composed of both dominant and subordinate males. The results suggest that male–male contests influence female mating decisions. By investigating the rules that dictate the outcomes of such interactions we can elucidate the role that behavior plays in the diversification of this species-rich lineage.  相似文献

Male Cephalonomia tarsalis (Ashmead) compete with one another for mates. The behavioral interactions between males for mates occur both on and off females. Males winning the first copulation do not exhibit apparent postcopulatory mate-guarding behaviors, and females accept subsequent copulations with losing males soon after separation. The duration of copulation when a second male is present is shorter than when only one male is present. However, females receive sufficient sperm for their life-time female progeny production in copulations disrupted artificially at 10 s (1/5 of the regular copulation duration) under normal noncompetition situations. This suggests that shorter copulations because of male–male competition could still result in adequate sperm transfer. Larger males were not more successful in competition than small males, but male competitive ability decreased with age.  相似文献

Mosquitoes hear with their antennae, which in most species are sexually dimorphic. Johnston, who discovered the mosquito auditory organ at the base of the antenna 150 years ago, speculated that audition was involved with mating behaviour. Indeed, male mosquitoes are attracted to female flight tones. The male auditory organ has been proposed to act as an acoustic filter for female flight tones, but female auditory behavior is unknown. We show, for the first time, interactive auditory behavior between males and females that leads to sexual recognition. Individual males and females both respond to pure tones by altering wing-beat frequency. Behavioral auditory tuning curves, based on minimum threshold sound levels that elicit a change in wing-beat frequency to pure tones, are sharper than the mechanical tuning of the antennae, with males being more sensitive than females. We flew opposite-sex pairs of tethered Toxorhynchites brevipalpis and found that each mosquito alters its wing-beat frequency in response to the flight tone of the other, so that within seconds their flight-tone frequencies are closely matched, if not completely synchronized. The flight tones of same-sex pairs may converge in frequency but eventually diverge dramatically.  相似文献

Responses of male and female Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) to colors of various hues and brightness levels were compared between swarming and non-swarming behavior periods. Relative rankings of color preference were similar between males and females and between swarming and non-swarming behavior periods. Numbers of thrips were higher on blues, violets, white and somewhat less on some yellows, while lower numbers were found on greens, reds, some yellows and highly UV reflective white. The effect of UV reflection on thrips response to color depended upon the amount of UV reflectance. Highly UV reflective white (78% reflectance at 365 nm) captured very few thrips compared with low UV white (14% reflectance at 365 nm), but colors with less than 35% UV reflectance had no negative effect on numbers of thrips captured compared with their lower UV counterparts. Correlations of average preference rank of colors across all tests with relative rank of brightness of the colors (based on the area under the reflectance curve in different spectral ranges) indicated highly significant correlations of preference with the brightness in the blue-violet range (R=0.69 for females; R=0.86 for males, P<0.0021), but no significant correlation with brightness in the visible, green-yellow, or UV range. This contrasts with previous physiological research which indicates that spectral response efficiency of this species peaks in the UV and at 540 nm (green-yellow range). Several possible physiological, behavioral and color brightness explanations for this discrepancy are discussed.Significantly higher numbers of male thrips were trapped during swarming (4.5–6.3×) compared with non-swarming behavior periods. Significantly higher numbers of males were trapped than females during swarming behavior periods, but more females were trapped than males during non-swarming behavior periods. Sex ratios during non-swarming periods approximated sex ratios found in populations in plants. Based on the density change relative to sex ratio change between behavior periods, there was an indication of a greater change in male behavior than in female behavior. Since males and females responded similarly to color during both behavior periods and attractive colors were similar to flower colors, this suggests that male thrips use resource-based areas for aggregation sites.  相似文献

Based on previous research in captivity, bonobos, Pan paniscus, have been called a female-bonded species. However, genetic and behavioural data indicate that wild females migrate. Bonding between these unrelated females would then be in contradiction with socio-ecological models. It has been argued that female bonding has been overemphasized in captive bonobos. We examine patterns of proximity, grooming and support behaviour in six well established captive groups of bonobos. We find that female bonding was not a typical characteristic of all captive bonobo groups. In only two groups there was a trend for females to prefer proximity with other females over association with males. We found no evidence that following or grooming between females was more frequent than between males and unrelated females or between males. Only in coalitions, females supported each other more than male–female or male–male dyads. We also investigated five mother–son pairs. Grooming was more frequent among mothers and sons than in any other dyad, but sons did not groom their mothers more than males groomed unrelated females. Mothers groomed their sons, or provided more support to them than females groomed or supported unrelated males. Thus, while bonds between females were clearly present, intersexual relations between males and either unrelated females or their mothers are of more, or equal importance.  相似文献

Testosterone plays an important role in territorial behavior of many male vertebrates and the Challenge Hypothesis has been suggested to explain differences in testosterone concentrations between males. For socially monogamous birds, the challenge hypothesis predicts that testosterone should increase during male–male interactions. To test this, simulated territorial intrusion (STI) experiments have been conducted, but only about a third of all bird species investigated so far show the expected increase in testosterone. Previous studies have shown that male black redstarts (Phoenicurus ochruros) do not increase testosterone during STIs or short-term male–male challenges. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether black redstarts modulate testosterone in an experimentally induced longer-term unstable social situation. We created social instability by removing males from their territories and compared the behavior and testosterone concentrations of replacement males and neighbors with those of control areas. Testosterone levels did not differ among replacement males, neighbors and control males. Injections with GnRH resulted in elevation of testosterone in all groups, suggesting that all males were capable of increasing testosterone. We found no difference in the behavioral response to STIs between control and replacement males. Furthermore, there was no difference in testosterone levels between replacement males that had expanded their territory and new-coming males. In combination with prior work these data suggest that testosterone is not modulated by male–male interactions in black redstarts and that testosterone plays only a minor role in territorial behavior. We suggest that territorial behavior in species that are territorial throughout most of their annual life-cycle may be decoupled from testosterone.  相似文献

Pseudorasbora parva, a species native to western Japan, has been accidentally introduced into eastern Japan, where P. pumila is indigenous. We investigated inter- and intraspecific, male–male competition between P. parva and P. pumila for acquisition of spawning substrates in an experimental setting. Within each species, males of larger standard length and heavier body weight were more successful in acquiring a substrate. Males of the two species competed, but the outcome was determined primarily by body weight. This interspecific, size-dependent, male–male competition might be an important factor in the species replacement of P. pumila by P. parva.  相似文献

Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus (pulse-type weakly electric fish) is a gregarious species that displays reproductive behavior and agonistic encounters between males only during the breeding season. During social interactions, in addition to its basal electric organ discharge (EOD), fish emit social electric signals (SESs) in the contexts of reproduction and intrasexual aggression. We reproduced natural behavior in laboratory settings: SESs recorded in the field are indistinguishable from those observed in our experimental setup. SESs are nocturnal, change seasonally and exhibit sexual dimorphism. This study provides an exhaustive characterization and classification of SESs produced by males and females during the breeding season. In male–female dyads, males produce accelerations and chirps while females interrupt their EODs. The same SESs are observed in male–male dyads. We present a novel, thorough classification of male chirps into four independent types (A, B, C, and M) based on their duration and internal structure. The type M chirp is only observed in male–male dyads. Chirps and interruptions, both in male–female and male–male dyads, are emitted in bouts, which are also grouped throughout the night. Our data suggest the existence of a sophisticated electric dialog during reproductive and aggressive interaction whose precise timing and behavioral significance are being investigated.  相似文献

Males of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi perform precopulatory guarding behavior, and solitary males often show aggressive behavior to take away guarded females. Males behave coercively while guarding females, so direct mate choice by females seems difficult in such a situation. By performing several experiments we examined possible indirect female choice of hermit crab. Males were attached to a shell by their left cheliped to look like guarding pairs (fake guarding pairs). The shells were filled with cotton containing either seawater or pheromone water. The fake guarding pair with only seawater caused male–male combat in 60% of trials whereas with pheromone water combats occurred in 88% of trials. Mean duration of male–male combat was significantly longer in trials with drops of seawater containing pheromones than in those without pheromones. These results suggest guarding pairs themselves cause male–male combat by visual stimulation, that female sex pheromones have further significant function in the recognition of guarding pairs and intensification of male–male combat, and that females release sex pheromones while they are guarded. As a result of the combat, the larger male ended up guarding a female. This strongly suggests that females choose males indirectly by exploiting male–male competition induced by sex pheromones under male coercive behavior.  相似文献
