Increases in sediment and drift algae accumulations have caused degradation of coastal lagoons worldwide. It is well known that these factors are stressors of seagrass beds, sediment fauna and coral reefs. However, little is known about the impacts on temperate hard-bottom assemblages within soft-bottom lagoons. To test if accumulations of sediment and drift algae (stress) affected recruitment of sessile oyster reef organisms, we constructed cages in Hog Island Bay, Virginia that trapped drifting macroalgae (≈ 2.7 kg WW m2) and facilitated sedimentation (≈ 7 mm per 2-3 month). The stress treatments and unstressed controls were placed in front, between, and behind reefs (position) to represent wave exposed (≈ 0.3 m, windy conditions), current exposed (≈ 0.2 m s 1, peak tide) and protected (≈ 0 m, 0.0 m s 1) habitats. The percentage cover of recruited taxa onto bricks was mapped 4 times during a 1-year period. There were strong significant effects of stress on the total assemblage, plant (but not animal) richness, total plant and animal cover, and cover of the most common taxa. Unstressed bricks had high plant richness, high animal and plant cover, and high cover of the oyster Crassostrea virginica, the alien algae Gracilaria vermiculophylla and Codium fragile, the alga Agardhiella subulata, and high to medium cover of the opportunistic algae Ulva curvata and Enteromorpha spp. In comparison, sediment-stressed bricks had low plant richness, low animal and plant cover, and low cover of C. virginica, G. vermiculophylla, C. fragile, A. subulata, U. curvata and Enteromorpha spp. Similarly, algae-stressed bricks also had low cover of animals, C. virginica, G. vermiculophylla, C. fragile, and A. subulata, but intermediate plant richness and plant cover and high cover of U. curvata and Enteromorpha spp. Although reef position caused significant multivariate results, this factor was clearly less important than the stress factor. Our study shows that accumulations of sediments and drift algae have an adverse impact on sessile temperate reef organisms, reducing richness and abundance, but favoring a few small opportunistic taxa. As the reef-generating oysters themselves performed poorly under these stressors, the long-term impact of the causes of these stressors, eutrophication and urbanization, is likely to be diminished reefs with cascading adverse effects on sessile reef organisms.  相似文献

The clover root weevil Sitona lepidus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) became an economically important pasture pest in New Zealand shortly after it was discovered in the Waikato region in 1996. A classical biological programme was initiated and an Irish biotype of Microctonus aethiopoides Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was released at four sites in the North Island in late summer 2006. These sites in Waikato, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu (two sites) regions were monitored monthly and parasitoid establishment confirmed at all sites within four months. In the winter of 2007, parasitism exceeded 70%. A widespread North Island drought in summer 2008 had a severe impact on S. lepidus populations at the Waikato and the two Manawatu release sites, resulting in parasitism below detection levels in the following summer. However, populations recovered by autumn. Within three years at the Hawke’s Bay site, M. aethiopoides appears to be suppressing S. lepidus populations and has dispersed naturally over 60 km.  相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) detection was carried out for adventitious rooting and associated propagation traits in a second-generation outbred Corymbia torelliana × Corymbia citriodora subspecies variegata hybrid family (n = 186). The parental species of this cross are divergent in their capacity to develop roots adventitiously on stem cuttings and their propensity to form lignotubers. For the ten traits studied, there was one or two QTL detected, with some QTL explaining large amounts of phenotypic variation (e.g. 66% for one QTL for percentage rooting), suggesting that major effects influence rooting in this cross. Collocation of QTL for many strongly genetically correlated rooting traits to a single region on linkage group 12 suggested pleiotropy. A three locus model was most parsimonious for linkage group 12, however, as differences in QTL position and lower genetic correlations suggested separate loci for each of the traits of shoot production and root initiation. Species differences were thought to be the major source of phenotypic variation for some rooting rate and root quality traits because of the major QTL effects and up to 59-fold larger homospecific deviations (attributed to species differences) relative to heterospecific deviations (attributed to standing variation within species) evident at some QTL for these traits. A large homospecific/heterospecific ratio at major QTL suggested that the gene action evident in one cross may be indicative of gene action more broadly in hybrids between these species for some traits.  相似文献

A rhizomatous growth form of Codium fragile is described for the first time. Plants were collected in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in estuaries dominated by Zostera marina. Rhizomatous plants developed from propagules of whole plants that settled horizontally. Horizontal axes of C. fragile were up to 1 m long in plants collected in situ. Plants developed several to dozens of erect axes at right angle to the base. Horizontal growth of up to 0.2 m was found in field experiments where fragments were tied to plastic mesh and left in situ for 4 months. The unconsolidated filaments at the base of C. fragile often wrapped around the rhizomes of Z. marina and up to five separate attachment sites to eelgrass were found in single plants of C. fragile. In four estuaries, 57–100% of Codium plants with identifiable substratum were attached to shoots and rhizomes of Z. marina. The rhizomatous growth form was found in plants identified as C. fragile ssp. tomentosoides (Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) and C. fragile ssp. atlanticum (Prince Edward Island), suggesting that this is a phenotypic response to growth in soft bottom environments.Communicated by K Lüning  相似文献

Columba livia is an important reservoir and carrier of Cryptococcus neoformans, Cryptococcus uniguttulatus, Cryptococcus laurentii and Cryptococcus albidus. Upper digestive tract of this species is also known as a habitat for Cryptococcus neoformans. Given the increasing clinical interest of this microorganism, 331 swabs from crop and 174 dropping samples from pigeon lofts in Grand Canary Island have been studied. The obtained results show an extensive presence samples 81 positive (24.47%) of Cryptococcus spp. in analysed crops: 32 (9.66%) for C. neoformans, 24 (7.2%) for C. uniguttulatus, 23 (6.9%) for C. albidus and 2 (0.6%) for C. laurentii. In the same way, Cryptococcus spp was also isolated in 82 (47.13%), dropping samples: C. neoformans in 59 (33.9%), C. uniguttulatus, in 9 (5.17%), C. laurentii in 8 (4.59%) and C. albidus in 6 (3.44%) of the investigated samples, respectively. The cryptococcosis produced by species of cryptococci other than C. neoformans has become more important during the last decade, supporting the study on the role of pigeon in the epidemiology of this disease.  相似文献

This review surveys whatever little is known on the influence of different environmental factors like light, temperature, nutrients, chemicals (such as plant hormones, vitamins, etc.), pH of the medium, biotic factors (such as algal extracellular substances, algal concentration, bacterial extracellular products, animal grazing and animal extracellular products), water movement, water stress, antibiotics, UV light, X-rays, γ-rays, and pollution on the spore germination in algae. The work done on the dormancy of algal spores and on the role of vegetative cells in tolerating environmental stress is also incorporated.  相似文献

Background

Red algae are primitive photosynthetic eukaryotes, whose spores are ideal subjects for studies of photosynthesis and development. Although the development of red alga spores has received considerable research attention, few studies have focused on the detailed morphological and photosynthetic changes that occur during the early development of tetraspores of Gracilaria vermiculophylla (Ohmi) Papenfuss (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta). Herein, we documented these changes in this species of red algae.  相似文献

Aquatic carnivorous plants of the genus Utricularia capture and utilise a wide range of small aquatic organisms. Most of the literature focuses on animals as prey. In this study, we investigate the occurrence of algae inside the traps of four species of bladderwort. We observed that algae of 45 genera form up to 80% of the total prey; algae were found frequently in traps without animal prey. The majority are coccal and trichal algae of the families Desmidiaceae and Zygnemataceae. The percentage of algae increases significantly with decreasing electric conductivity of the water (r S = −0.417; P = 0,000). Thus, algae are the most frequent prey in extremely soft waters. The percentage of algae did not differ significantly, not within the investigated Utricularia species or within the various study sites. However, the taxonomic composition of the algal prey showed highly significant differences between different sites. More than 90% of the trapped algae were killed and degraded by the bladders. The recent data allow for two alternative hypotheses: either algal prey supplements animal prey in oligotrophic waters, or the unprofitable trapping of algae is rather an additional stress factor for Utricularia and contributes to its limited distribution in some peat bogs.  相似文献

Red algae from the Gulf of Thailand were examined for haloperoxidatic activity. Six species, Gracilaria changii, G. edulis, G. firma, G. fisheri, G. salicornia, and G. tenuistipitata, showed bromoperoxidatic activity. Duplicate polyacrylamide electrophoretic gels showed enzyme activity patterns developed by phenol red staining for bromoperoxidatic activity and by 3,3′-diaminobenzidine staining for peroxidatic activity. All algae gave isoenzymic bromoperoxidatic activity bands and peroxidatic activity bands, but there were peroxidatic and bromoperoxidatic activity bands that did not correspond. The bromoperoxidatic activity of the crude enzyme extracts as well as previously dialyzed enzyme solutions was enhanced significantly by incubation with vanadium pentoxide. The three purified bromoperoxidases from G. fisheri contained vanadium, and their relative activities corresponded to the ratio of vanadium to enzyme. In addition, they were not inhibited by H2O2. These data confirm that the enzymes are vanadium bromoperoxidases.  相似文献

Selection on traits conferring reduced predation may be opposed by selection on other traits associated with reproduction. Here, we examined the hypothesis that traits associated with reproduction in Gammarus pulex are driven by predation. We studied G. pulex originating from ponds with two different kinds of predator regimes: (1) ponds with fish—often large, non-gap-limited predators and (2) ponds without fish where invertebrates are the dominant predators—often small, gap-limited predators with a much more restricted prey size range. We examined the body size of males and females in G. pulex amplexus pairs originating from fish and fishless ponds. We also examined, in the laboratory, their mating success, the number of offspring per female and offspring mortality under different rearing conditions, with or without fish cue. Mating success, defined as the percentage of amplexus pairs that produced live offspring, was higher for G. pulex from fishless ponds independent of rearing condition. Individuals from fish ponds were larger and they produced a higher number of offspring which tended to be related to female body size. Offspring mortality was higher in populations from fish ponds compared to populations from fishless ponds. Despite the higher offspring mortality, females from fish ponds had a higher number of offspring alive after 13 weeks, which is the approximate time it takes for G. pulex to reach maturity. Our data imply that no trade-off between reducing body size to reduce mortality caused by fish and maximising reproductive success exist in G. pulex from fish ponds. The strategy with many offspring may be the correct strategy in fishponds where predation pressure generally is higher than in fishless ponds.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rate (P N), SPAD value, specific leaf area (SLA), flag leaf area (FLA), and nitrogen content (LN) of genus Oryza were investigated and their correlation was analyzed to assess some of the main photosynthetic traits among different species in the genus Oryza. The results revealed wide variation in these traits. The species O. rufipogon and O. australiensis exhibited maximum photosynthetic rate. Comparison of different types of genomes (diploid: 2n=2x=24; tetraploid: 2n=4x=48) and growth habit (shade- or sun-grown) showed the species of diploid (with genome symbol EE; 2n=2x=24) genomes, with perennial and sun-grown species, had high apparent photosynthesis compared to others. The species with BB/BBCC, shade-grown and the tetraploids showed high SPAD value, and the flag leaf in sun-grown species and diploids were thicker (low SLA) compared with others. However, no significant difference could be noticed among the different types of genomes. Higher leaf area was noticed among the species of CC/CCDD genome, perennial shade-grown species and tetraploids than in others. The variety IR 36 exhibited highest leaf nitrogen concentration. Correlation analysis showed a strong relationship between P N and leaf nitrogen concentration while no marked relationships were observed among other characteristics. It implies that the species with thick and small leaves with high nitrogen concentration and high photosynthesis evolved better than others. O. rufipogon, with the same genome as O. sativa, could be one of the wild rice resources for elite crop improvement.  相似文献

The temnodontis variety of Caligus mauritanicus Brian, 1924 described by Brian (1924) is a valid species known only from a single host species, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus). New material of this species has been examined from the same host fish caught from Abuqir Bay, Alexandria (Egypt), from Iskenderun Bay (Turkey) and from off the coast of South Africa. Using this material, C. temnodontis Brian, 1924 is redescribed and compared with related species. It is most closely related to the Indo-Pacific species C. pagrosomi Yamaguti, 1939.  相似文献

Mammillaria species are the most numerous within Cactaceae family, and some of them are threatened with extinction as a result of human activities. In this work, results of in vitro propagation are presented for ten Mammillaria species, testing 20 combinations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and kinetin. Best results on shoot formation were obtained using kinetin at two levels: 27.9 and 46.5 μM. All IAA levels tested were able to induce de novo shoot formation in M. bocasana, M. densispina, M. hahniana, M. hutchisoniana, M. orcutii, M. pectinifera, M. perbella, M. picta, M. rhodantha, and M. zephyranthoides. Depending on the IAA level tested, four responding groups were observed concerning their highest shoot-formation number. For all species, the highest average of shoot formation was achieved with 5.7:46.5 or 11.4:46.5 μM IAA/kinetin, yielding 4.8 and 4.7 shoots per explant, respectively, in 60 d. Rooting of regenerated shoots was achieved by leaving the explants in their shoot-induction medium or transferring them to half-strength MS medium. Hardening of regenerated plants was successfully achieved by planting them in peat moss substrate after a desiccation treatment at room temperature for 3 d.  相似文献

We have recently indicated the plant growth promoting activities of Pseudomonas sp. as well as their alleviating effects on some soil stressors such as salinity. This is because in recent years, biological fertilizers have received special attention by scientists in sustainable agriculture. Accordingly, it is pertinent to specify the beneficiary level of such soil bacteria on plant growth including phosphorous (P) uptake. Hence, the objectives were to determine: (1) the plant growth promoting effects of the tested Pseudomonas sp., and (2) its combined effects with different P fertilization rates on the nutrient uptake (N, P, and K) and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under greenhouse and field conditions. The experiments were factorially arranged on the basis of a completely randomized block design with three replicates and were conducted at the Research Farm of Agriculture and Natural Resources Research Center of Khorasan, Mashhad, Iran. P was fertilized at three levels including 0, 25 and 50 kg/ha P2O5. Pseudomonas sp. including Pseudomonas fluorescens 153, P. fluorescens 169, P. putida 4, and P. putida 108 were tested. Activities such as production of ACC deaminase and IAA-like products, as well as P solubilization were among the most important activities of the tested Pseudomonas sp. Such bacterial effects greatly enhanced wheat growth and yield under greenhouse and field conditions. The results also showed that the effects of Pseudomonas sp. on wheat nutrient uptake and the effects of bacteria as well as P fertilization on wheat yield were significant. P. putida 108 was the most effective strain enhancing wheat P uptake and grain yield under greenhouse (96 and 58%) and field (80 and 37%) conditions, respectively. Hence, although Pseudomonas sp. could be a suitable replacement for high P fertilization, however, the optimum wheat yield resulted when the bioinoculants are combined with 50% (25 kg/ha P2O5) P fertilization. This finding has great agricultural and environmental implications.  相似文献

There are three most important bacterial causative agents of serious infections that could be misused for warfare purposes: Bacillus anthracis (the causative agent of anthrax) is the most frequently mentioned one; however, Fracisella tularensis (causing tularemia) and Yersinia pestis (the causative agent of plague) are further bacterial agents enlisted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into the category A of potential biological weapons. This review intends to summarize basic information about these bacterial agents. Military aspects of their pathogenesis and the detection techniques suitable for field use are discussed.  相似文献

Bacteria and diatoms are primary colonizers of marine surfaces and hence play a crucial role in the attachment and subsequent growth of macroorganisms. It has been suggested that the temperate green alga Ulva lactuca relies on the defence provided by the epiphytic bacterial community to regulate surface fouling of colonising organisms. In this study, ten resident bacterial isolates from tropical U. lactuca were tested for their antibacterial and antidiatom properties that may regulate surface colonization on the algae. Sixty percent of the epiphytic isolates expressed antibacterial properties against other resident bacteria and 80% had antidiatom activity against the pennate diatom, Cylindrotheca fusiformis. Isolates of the Pseudoalteromonas genus showed both- antibacterial and antidiatom activities, while members of the genus Bacillus, Vibrio and Shewanella mostly possessed antidiatom activity. Our results show that a high proportion of bacterial isolates from tropical U. lactuca, like that of their temperate counterparts contain antibiotic properties that might impact on the bacterial community composition and prevent fouling by diatoms.  相似文献

Both innate and evolutionarily increased ecophysiological advantages can contribute to vigorous growth, and eventually to invasiveness of alien plants. Little effort has been made to explore the roles of innate factors of alien plants in invasiveness and the effects of CO2 enrichment on alien plant invasions. To address these problems, we compared invasive Eupatorium adenophorum, its native conspecific, and a native congener (E. japonicum) under ambient and doubled atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Native E. adenophorum from Mexico grew slower than invasive E. adenophorum but faster than native E. japonicum under both CO2 concentrations. The faster growth rate of invasive E. adenophorum was associated with higher photosynthetic capacity and leaf area ratio. For invasive E. adenophorum, the higher photosynthetic capacity was associated with higher nitrogen (N) allocation to photosynthesis, which was related to lower leaf mass per area; the higher leaf area ratio was due to lower leaf mass per area and higher leaf mass fraction. Tradeoff between N allocations to photosynthesis versus defenses was found. CO2 enrichment significantly increased relative growth rate and biomass accumulation by increasing actual photosynthetic rate for all studied materials. However, the relative increase in growth was not significantly different among them. CO2 enrichment did not influence N allocation to photosynthesis, but increased N allocation to cell walls. The reduced leaf N content decreased N content in photosynthesis, explaining the down-regulation of photosynthetic capacity under prolonged elevated CO2 concentration. Our results indicate that both innate and evolutionary advantages in growth and related ecophysiological traits contribute to invasiveness of invasive E. adenophorum, and CO2 enrichment may not aggravate E. adenophroum’s invasion in the future.  相似文献

Several groups of tube-dwelling coral symbionts induce the formation of long, finger-like branches (“fingers”) on Montipora corals in the lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia. We surveyed the prevalence and taxonomic diversity of these symbionts across the northern lagoons of Moorea, and documented the length and density of the finger structures on coral colonies. We found that the symbionts, which include gammarid amphipods and chaetopterid polychaete worms that were not previously known to associate with scleractinian corals, dramatically alter coral skeletal morphology, and may alter coral biology and reef ecology.  相似文献

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are generally sensitive to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Lactobacillus sakei YSI8 is one of the very few LAB strains able to degrade H2O2 through the action of a heme-dependent catalase. Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains are very important probiotic starter cultures in meat product fermentation, but they are deficient in catalase. In this study, the effect of heterologous expression of L. sakei catalase gene katA in L. rhamnosus on its oxidative stress resistance was tested. The recombinant L. rhamnosus AS 1.2466 was able to decompose H2O2 and the catalase activity reached 2.85 μmol H2O2/min/108 c.f.u. Furthermore, the expression of the katA gene in L. rhamnosus conferred enhanced oxidative resistance on the host. The survival ratios after short-term H2O2 challenge were increased 600 and 104-fold at exponential and stationary phase, respectively. Further, viable cells were 100-fold higher in long-term aerated cultures. Simulation experiment demonstrated that both growth and catalase activity of recombinant L. rhamnosus displayed high stability under environmental conditions similar to those encountered during sausage fermentation.  相似文献
