Prominent international and national ethics commissions such as the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee rarely achieve anything remotely resembling gender equality, although local research and clinical ethics committees are somewhat more egalitarian. Under‐representation of women is particularly troubling when the subject matter of modern bioethics so disproportionately concerns women’s bodies, and when such committees claim to derive ‘universal’ standards. Are women missing from many ethics committees because of relatively straightforward, if discriminatory, demographic factors? Or are the methods of analysis and styles of ethics to which these bodies are committed somehow ‘anti‐female’? It has been argued, for example, that there is a ‘different voice’ in ethical reasoning, not confined to women but more representative of female experience. Similarly, some feminist writers, such as Evelyn Fox Keller and Donna Haraway, have asked difficult epistemological questions about the dominant ‘masculine paradigm’ in science. Perhaps the dominant paradigm in ethics committee deliberation is similarly gendered? This article provides a preliminary survey of women’s representation on ethics committees in eastern and western Europe, a critical analysis of the supposed ‘masculinism’ of the principlist approach, and a case example in which a ‘different voice’ did indeed make a difference.  相似文献

In 2004, the first ever multi‐sited clinical trials studied the prospect of HIV biomedical prevention (referred to as pre‐exposure prophylaxis—‘PrEP’). The trials were implemented at several international sites, but many officially closed down before they completed. At most sites, both scientists and community AIDS advocates raised concerns over the ethics and scientific rationales of the trial. Focusing on the Nigerian trial site, we detail the controversy that emerged among mostly Nigerian research scientists who scrutinized the research design and protocol. While some of the disputes, especially those pertaining to community engagement mechanisms, were ultimately resolved in international fora and implemented in later PrEP trials, concerns over science rationales and assumptions were never addressed. We argue that scientific rationales should be treated as ethical concerns and suggest that such concerns should be deliberated at host sites before the trial protocol is finalized.  相似文献

This paper explores whether we can interpret the notion of ‘forensic culture’ as something akin to what Knorr-Cetina called an ‘epistemic culture’. Can we speak of a ‘forensic culture’, and, if so, how is it similar to, or different from, other epistemic cultures that exist in what is conventionally called ‘science’? This question has important policy implications given the National Academy Science’s (NAS) recent identification of ‘culture’ as one of the problems at the root of what it identified as ‘serious deficiencies’ in U.S. forensic science and ‘scientific culture’ as an antidote to those problems. Finding the NAS’s characterisation of ‘scientific culture’ overly general and naïve, this paper offers a preliminary exploration of what might be called a ‘forensic culture’. Specifically, the paper explores the way in which few of the empirical findings accumulated by sociologists of science about research science seem to apply to forensic science. Instead, forensic science seems to have developed a distinct culture for which a sociological analysis will require new explanatory tools. Faithful sociological analysis of ‘forensic culture’ will be a necessary prerequisite for the kind of culture change prescribed by external reformist bodies like the NAS.  相似文献

在大田条件下研究了两种品质类型花生(Arachis hypogaea)品质形成的动态差异及其子叶细胞超微结构的差异。结果表明, 高蛋白品种‘XB023’的蛋白质含量在籽仁发育前期较高油品种‘鲁花9号’低, 后期显著高于‘鲁花9号’, 且成熟期籽仁8种必需氨基酸组分含量均高于‘鲁花9号’, 其中谷氨酸、赖氨酸和亮氨酸含量差异极显著; ‘XB023’脂肪含量在籽仁发育期一直低于‘鲁花9号’。‘XB023’各时期的籽仁可溶性糖含量和油酸/亚油酸(O/L)值均显著低于‘鲁花9号’。两品种在果针入土10天时子叶细胞即形成淀粉粒、脂体和蛋白体, 随后脂体、蛋白体的数量不断增加, 淀粉粒先增大后逐渐缩小解体。‘XB023’的脂体达到最大的时间早于‘鲁花9号’, 而‘鲁花9号’的脂体快速积累的时间比‘XB023’长。两品种蛋白体大小都在果针入土40天时达到最大值, ‘XB023’的蛋白体在籽仁发育后期数量增加较快。高蛋白品种较高的蛋白质含量由其子叶细胞中较大蛋白体的大小和较多的蛋白体数量决定, 而高油品种较高的脂肪含量是由其较多的脂体数量决定。  相似文献

In the past 30 years enormous progress was made in plant membrane biology and transport physiology, a fact reflected in the appearance of textbooks. The first book dedicated to ‘Membrane Transport in Plants’ was published on the occasion of the ‘International Workshop on Membrane Transport in Plants’ held at the Nuclear Research Center, Jülich, Germany [Zimmermann and Dainty (eds) 1974] and was followed in 1976 by a related volume ‘Transport in plants II’ in the ‘Encyclopedia of plant physiology’ [Lüttge and Pitman (eds) 1976]. A broad spectrum of topics including thermodynamics of transport processes, water relations, primary reactions of photosynthesis, as well as more conventional aspects of membrane transport was presented. The aim of the editors of the first book was to bring advanced thermodynamical concepts to the attention of biologists and to show physical chemists and biophysicist what the more complex biological systems were like. To bundle known data on membrane transport in plants and relevant fields for mutual understanding, interdisciplinary research and clarification of problems were considered highly important for further progress in this scientific area of plant physiology. The present review will critically evaluate the progress in research in membrane transport in plants that was achieved during the past. How did ‘Membrane Transport in Plants’ progress within the 30 years between the publication of the first book about this topic (Zimmermann and Dainty 1974), a recent one with the same title (Blatt 2004), and today?  相似文献

To comprehend the state of the art of sponge reproduction science (SRS), we quantified and analyzed the trends in SRS in the last decade, aiming to answer three questions: (i) Were there fewer SRS works presented during the last sponge conference? (ii) Did the number of SRS publications decline in the last decade? (iii) Does the number of abstracts at sponge conferences influence overall SRS publications? In addition, we checked whether the SRS community has answered Ereskovsky’s ‘five important questions’, enabling us to advance SRS enough to be considered as a fourth period of this scientific field. We found that SRS was less represented at the last sponge conference, despite an increase in the number of publications during the last decade. Moreover, the number of abstracts presented at sponge conferences contributed to a small portion (25%) of the published works in this area during the last decade. In addition, we found that two of the five Ereskovsky’s questions are still mostly not answered. Thus, we conclude that SRS is healthy and advancing steadily, especially in some subareas (e.g. developmental biology and life history). There are still much to advance, but this is still a strong field of biological science research.  相似文献

This paper illustrates how cultural logics of desire are being transformed in the context of the global economy refashioning intimate lives. Exploring the experiences of Euro‐American female professionals in Jakarta, it suggests that they become uncomfortably visible as ‘white bodies’; their desirability appears compromised, especially given Orientalist discourses which valorise Asian women's bodies. At the same time, women's position as well‐paid employees generates a contradictory logic of desire: the ‘ego‐boost’ they experience at work may intensify their demands on the masculinity and enlightened views of potential partners, thus rendering Indonesian men, with their perceived bodily effeminacy and ‘traditional values’ unattractive. As one response to the lack of desirability, some women engage in a moral discourse that casts Indonesian women whom they consider ‘bargirls’, as well as the Euro‐American men they attract, as morally deficient. The paper thus provides an alternative perspective on reconfigurations of desire in the context of global gendered mobility.  相似文献

Nine indigenous Greek olive cultivars (‘Aetonicholia Kynourias’, ‘Arvanitolia Serron’, ‘Ntopia Atsicholou’, ‘Koroneiki’, ‘Lefkolia Serron’, ‘Ntopia Pierias’, ‘Petrolia Serron’, ‘Smertolia’ and ‘Chryssophylli’) were evaluated for their tolerance to salinity stress (four levels of sodium chloride salt, i.e., 0, 50, 100 and 200 mM) under hydroponic conditions. Their photosynthetic performance, leaf carbohydrates (mannitol, glucose, fructose and sucrose) and nutrients (nitrogen, potassium, calcium, sodium and chloride) were assessed. Photosynthetic performance was reduced under salt stress and this was mostly evident in ‘Koroneiki’ and ‘Ntopia Atsicholou’ (approximately 20% of the corresponding controls), while ‘Ntopia Pierias’, ‘Smertolia’ and ‘Petrolia Serron’ did not exhibit significant changes with salinity level. Photosynthesis (A) was reduced mainly due to severe stomatal limitations. A weak correlation was detected between A and intercellular CO2 (Ci) indicating a minor role of non-stomatal limitations. Carbohydrates in the leaves did not seem to undergo significant changes. Mannitol accumulated in ‘Chryssophylli’ leaves and glucose in ‘Arvanitolia Serron’ leaves under the highest salinity level. Potassium concentration per leaf water volume was significantly reduced (especially under the highest salinity level ?45 to 60% of control). Calcium was not significantly affected although Ca/Na ratio was reduced, due to the great increase of sodium concentration. ‘Lefkolia Serron’ and ‘Arvanitolia Serron’ accumulated the least sodium in their leaves, exhibiting high K/Na ratio under the highest salinity level, indicating a better regulation of potassium influx under high sodium concentration. Based on the present data and on previous research ‘Lefkolia Serron’ and ‘Arvanitolia Serron’ are the two cultivars with the highest tolerance against salinity stress.  相似文献

This study was aimed to investigate the possibility of regulating free proline content and ethylene production in the resistant to abiotic stress cv. ‘Hornet H’ and the tolerant to stress cv. ‘Sunday’ of winter rapeseed seedlings by pretreatment with exogenous L-proline and L-glutamine in non-acclimated and cold-acclimated seedlings in relation to freezing tolerance. The ratio of proline content in acclimated (at 4°C) versus non-acclimated (18°C) ‘Hornet H’ seedlings increased 2.12-fold and in ‘Sunday’ seedlings 1.95-fold. Exogenously applied, proline and glutamine produced a positive effect on free proline content in both cold-acclimated and non-acclimated seedlings. At a temperature of -1°C the proline content significantly increased in non-acclimated and especially in cold-acclimated seedlings. At an intensified freezing temperature (?3°C, ?5°C, ?7°C), the proline content decreased in comparison with that at ?1°C, but glutamine, especially proline, in cold-acclimated seedlings takes part in free proline level increase and in seedlings’ resistance to freezing. Ethylene production increased in cold-acclimated conditions and under the effect of exogenous proline and glutamine. In freezing conditions, ethylene production decreased, but in cold-acclimated seedlings and under pretreatment of proline and glutamine the ethylene synthesis was intensive. Thus, free proline content and ethylene production increase in cold-acclimated winter rapeseed seedlings and under pretreatment with glutamine and especially with proline. Free proline is involved in the response to cold stress, and its level may be an indicator of cold-hardening and freezing tolerance, but the role of ethylene in the regulation of cold tolerance remains not quite clear.  相似文献

During the past two decades, Iran has experienced a noteworthy growth in its biomedical research sector. At the same time, ethical concerns and debates resulting from this burgeoning enterprise has led to increasing attention paid to biomedical ethics. In Iran, Biomedical research ethics and research oversight passed through major periods during the past decades, separated by a paradigm shift. Period 1, starting from the early 1970s, is characterized by research paternalism and complete reliance on researchers as virtuous and caring physicians. This approach was in concordance with the paternalistic clinical practice of physicians outside of research settings during the same period. Period 2, starting from the late 1990s, was partly due to revealing of ethical flaws that occurred in biomedical research in Iran. The regulatory and funding bodies concluded that it was not sufficient to rely solely on the personal and professional virtues of researchers to safeguard human subjects' rights and welfare. The necessity for independent oversight, emphasized by international declarations, became obvious and undeniable. This paradigm shift led to the establishment of research ethics committees throughout the country, the establishment of academic research centers focusing on medical ethics (MEHR) and the compilation of the first set of national ethical guidelines on biomedical research–one of the first and most important projects conducted by and in the MEHR. Although not yet arrived, ‘period 3’ is on its way. It is predictable from the obvious trends toward performance of high‐quality clinical research and the appearance of a highly educated new generation, especially among women.  相似文献

This paper examines the US Atomic Energy Commission’s radioisotope distribution program, established in 1946, which employed the uranium piles built for the wartime bomb project to produce specific radioisotopes for use in scientific investigation and medical therapy. As soon as the program was announced, requests from researchers began pouring into the Commission’s office. During the first year of the program alone over 1000 radioisotope shipments were sent out. The numerous requests that came from scientists outside the United States, however, sparked a political debate about whether the Commission should or even could export radioisotopes. This controversy manifested the tension between the aims of the Marshall Plan and growing US national security concerns after World War II. Proponents of international circulation of radioisotopes emphasized the political and scientific value of collaborating with European scientists, especially biomedical researchers. In the end, radioisotopes were shipped from the Commission’s Oak Ridge facility to many laboratories in England and continental Europe, where they were used in biochemical research on animals, plants, and microbes. However, the issue of radioisotope export continued to draw political fire in the United States, even after the establishment of national atomic energy facilities elsewhere.  相似文献

‘Immunocompetence’ is a term used in avian immunological ecology to refer to the ability of an individual to overcome potential parasite infections. However, there are multiple ecological definitions of this term currently used and all of them are rather liberal in immunological terms. This prevents much of the potential intellectual interchange between avian ecologists and immunologists, which decelerates the development of immunological ecology as a scientific discipline. We therefore highlight that the term should be handled with care. In any individual host‐parasite interrelationship the demands on host immunity are distinct and thus also the measurements of immunity in any particular case should be aimed differently. Although ornithologists often aspire to obtain a single variable for immunity in their research, due to the enormous diversity of parasites possessing the ability to infect the host, there is no single value for anti‐parasite resistance, i.e. no overall ‘immunocompetence’ per se exists. We propose to use more rigorous terminology, consistent with the one used in classical immunology. The term ‘immunocompetence’ (defined as the ability to produce anti‐parasite or anti‐antigen immune response) should be used as 0/1 character. The magnitude of a particular immune response (i.e. a continuous quantitative trait) should be referred to as ‘immune responsiveness’. Most importantly, both terms should always be used only with respect to a certain parasite taxon or antigen studied as otherwise they lose their explanatory value.  相似文献

Cochin estuary, one of the largest tropical estuaries of India, supports high levels of human pressure throughout the year and natural stress during monsoon season. Six stations were monitored between 2002 and 2004 covering the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons. Ecological status of macrobenthos was assessed using the AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) and the multivariate-AMBI (M-AMBI). The overall ‘moderate’ disturbance classification (according to AMBI) and ‘moderate-poor’ ecological status (according to M-AMBI) indicate that the macrobenthos in the estuary experiences stress. There was a gradient of increasing quality from the most degraded northern site to the main estuary, downstream. Monsoon caused further reductions in quality of macrobenthos in the main estuary, while the degraded northern station showed improvement in 2003, when the monsoon was strong. The assessment of the Cochin Estuary using AMBI and M-AMBI indicates where this water body stands in comparison to European and other water bodies, which may be useful for developing required protective measures in tropical systems and to design monitoring strategies.  相似文献

The need for a solid knowledge base to inform conservation activity is now universally recognised. We critically scrutinised the scientific knowledge of large felids in India located in peer-reviewed research papers to assess the information available to make landscape-level management decisions that aid conservation, which is a stated goal of both the Indian government and the international community. We found two striking patterns: the biological sciences dominate in the published literature, and nearly all the research has been carried out in protected areas, though a substantial number of large felids also live outside protected areas. We argue that these patterns are not incidental, but the result of the dualistic ontology of science that uses processes of ‘purification’ and ‘translation’ to fit complex realities into disciplinary prerogatives organised around creating dichotomies (like nature–culture). In addition, since this body of scientific knowledge locates large felids in ‘pure’ biological landscapes, there is little or no insight from multi-use landscapes. These findings, we believe, highlight important knowledge gaps in our present research-based knowledge of large felids in India, which urgently need to be addressed if progress is to be made in conservation.  相似文献

For several years now, the World Wide Web (WWW) has left the realm of information technology and represents a fundamental everyday working tool for a wide variety of disciplines. Aerobiology, though a newcomer in this virtual space, is proceeding at a fast pace towards the creation of an easily accessible and effective information network. The web gives access to text, imagery, movie and sound with relatively low-cost and user-friendly interfaces conceived as graphical magazines. A practical way to start navigating and looking for information is to operate a ‘search engine’ which is a large database containing addresses on a wide spectrum of subjects. As an alternative, a few selected sites exist that can initialize your search by providing a thematic list of addresses. After leaving the entry ‘port’ you are directed from site to site and eventually end up with a lot more information than you initially thought. Excerpts: information on public and private institutions, access to databases and image catalogs, bibliographical information, overview of monitoring networks, directions on national and international research programs, news (calendar of meetings, courses, etc.). Information is provided for the non-expert user who asks himself the key questions: ‘Where do I start to browse the net?’ or ‘Can I become a provider of information on the net and, if so, is it terribly difficult?’ The idea is that everybody can in principle become a ‘surfer’ or a ‘provider’ dedicating a reasonable amount of time and effort to the task. What one ends up with is an easy-to-use and powerful tool that is already helping the whole aerobiological community to pursue its goals and reach out for necessary interdisciplinary approaches to unsolved scientific issues. The influences of physico-chemical and biological processes on dimethylsulfide (DMS) dynamics in the most oligotrophic subtropical zones of the global ocean were investigated. As metrics for the dynamics of DMS and the so-called ‘summer DMS paradox’ of elevated summer concentrations when surface chlorophyll a (Chl) and particulate organic carbon (POC) levels are lowest, we used the DMS-to-Chl and DMS-to-POC ratios in the context of three independent and complementary approaches. Firstly, field observations of environmental variables (such as the solar radiation dose, phosphorus limitation of phytoplankton and bacterial growth) were used alongside discrete DMS, Chl and POC estimates extracted from global climatologies (i.e., a ‘station based’ approach). We then used monthly climatological data for DMS, Chl, and POC averaged over the biogeographic province wherein a given oligotrophic subtropical zone resides (i.e., a ‘province based’ approach). Finally we employed sensitivity experiments with a new DMS module coupled to the ocean general circulation and biogeochemistry model PISCES to examine the influence of various processes in governing DMS dynamics in oligotrophic regions (i.e., a ‘model based’ approach). We find that the ‘station based’ and ‘province based’ approaches yield markedly different results. Interestingly, the ‘province based’ approach suggests the presence of a ‘summer DMS paradox’ in most all of the oligotrophic regions we studied. In contrast, the ‘station based’ approach suggests that the ‘summer DMS paradox’ is only present in the Sargasso Sea and eastern Mediterranean. Overall, we found the regional differences in the absolute and relative concentrations of DMS between 5 of the most oligotrophic regions of the world’s oceans were better accounted for by their nutrient dynamics (specifically phosphorus limitation) than by physical factors often invoked, e.g., the solar radiation dose. Our ‘model based’ experiments suggest that it is the limitation of phytoplankton/bacterial production and bacterial consumption of DMS by pervasive phosphorus limitation that is responsible for the ‘summer DMS paradox’.  相似文献

Background and aims

Rice plants alternately experience anaerobic and aerobic conditions during their life cycle in rainfed lowlands. Each condition affects root growth differently. Our objective was to clarify the specific rice root response to aerobic conditions in rainfed lowlands.

Methods

At the Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center in northeastern Thailand, we obtained root samples from 17 ‘Surin1’ (Thai variety) BC3-derived lines and 7 CT9993-5-10-1-M × IR62266-42-6-2 doubled-haploid lines from flooded and non-flooded paddy fields at the reproductive stage in 2010 and 2011.

Results

In the non-flooded trial, rice was grown aerobically by draining the perched water; soil moisture at a depth of 20 cm fluctuated between ?10 and ?30 kPa. Deep rooting was likely promoted under aerobic conditions, but slightly drier soils under longer dry spells seemed to restrict root penetration, as the topsoil rapidly hardened during dry spells of only a few days. Fine-root development in the topsoil was inhibited under aerobic conditions.

Conclusions

Even without drought stress, rice roots respond significantly to the disappearance of standing water in rainfed lowlands via deep rooting and root branching. We identified one promising ‘Surin1’ BC3-derived line showing an adaptive response of deep rooting under aerobic conditions, which can be used as a breeding material for rainfed lowland rice in Thailand.  相似文献

The Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias taurus) is a popular attraction for shark eco-tourism using SCUBA. The species is also ‘globally Vulnerable’ (IUCN 2008. List of Threatened Species. www.iucnredlist.org/). Magic Point (off Maroubra) in Sydney is favoured by recreational SCUBA divers wishing to observe these sharks. The objective of this study was to experimentally test the level of the activities of recreational SCUBA divers on shark behaviour. This study assessed the shark responses to diver group size (4, 8 and 12), time of day (am, noon and pm) and diver distance from the sharks (3?m and 6?m). The study found that diver activity does affect the aggregation, swimming and respiratory behaviour of sharks at this site, albeit at short-term levels. Diver group size had no significant effect on shark aggregation, but the proximity of divers to the sharks was crucial. Shark distribution in the cave changed significantly in the presence of divers at 3?m distance from the cave, but stayed unchanged at 6?m. This was particularly apparent in the presence of large groups of 12 divers at 3?m distance when sharks increased their swim speed and ventilation mechanism from ‘active’ to ‘RAM’ ventilation. Such change coincided with a sudden decrease in ventilation frequency. Our research suggests that these effects are short-term and that sharks resume their behaviour once the divers retreat. If divers abide by the current code of practice for diving at this site, it is unlikely that their activities will substantially impact Grey Nurse Sharks in the long term.  相似文献
