To test a new hypothesis explaining Fabaceae success in tropical dry forests, we compared seed germination of 34 species including legumes and non‐legumes. Legume seeds germinated twice as fast with higher final percentages compared to other taxa, which may afford them a competitive advantage in highly seasonal environments.  相似文献

Natural extracts are frequently adopted as a valuable alternative to antibiotics in intensive animal farming. Their diverse bioactive constituents such as phytosterols, glucosinolates, carotenoids and polyphenols have shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Tannins are the largest class of polyphenol compounds of plant extracts, which can be classified into two hydrolysable or condensed subgroups. Poultry and swine nutrition are the most important sectors in which tannins have been used, firstly adopting tannin-rich feedstuffs and more recently, using tannin extracts from different plants. Several commercial products are available containing tannins extracted from the European chestnut tree (Castanea sativa Mill.) and the American quebracho (Schinopsis spp.). Tannins extracted from these plants have been applied on intensive swine farms due to their ability to improve animal performance and health. These positive and prominent effects are frequently associated with the antinutritional effects in reducing feed palatability, digestibility and protein utilization of feed. Some criticisms and contrasting results regarding pig performance and intestinal health have been reported. This paper provides an overview of the effects of chestnut and quebracho tannins on growth performance and intestinal health of pigs in order to clarify the appropriate dosage and response in the various physiological stages.  相似文献

在种子植物-动物的互惠关系中,植物果实成熟后需要吸引种子传播者取食果实,传播其种子至适宜萌发的生境,同时又要防御种子捕食者过度消耗种子。果实内的次生物质(如:配糖生物碱、大黄素、辣椒素)在此过程中起到重要的调控作用。依赖脊椎动物传播的肉质果中往往含有与植物茎、叶内相同的次生物质,其种类繁多,主要分为含氮化合物、酚类化合物和萜类化合物。未成熟果实内富含次生物质(如:单宁、大黄素),主要保护未成熟种子不被潜在的捕食者和食果动物取食,这些次生物质的含量通常随果实成熟而降低;其它次生物质(如:脱辅基类胡萝卜素)的含量随果实成熟而增多,可能起到吸引食果动物的作用。在对脊椎动物捕食的抵御中,果实内不同类型的次生物质促使成熟果实对所有脊椎动物都有毒性(专毒性)或者仅对种子捕食者有毒性(泛毒性)。肉质果内的次生物质对植物-食果动物相互关系的调控作用,还可以通过调节动物取食频次和数量、抑制和促进种子萌发、改变种子在肠道的滞留时间、吸引传播者等生态作用而实现。某种次生物质往往集多种生态作用于一身。目前对肉质果内次生物质与脊椎动物相互关系的探讨还不够深入。未来研究需要综合考虑植物次生物质与果实生理生化、形态学等特征对食果者的综合调控机理;次生物质在种子传播后的调控作用对植物种群或群落结构和分布格局的影响;从动植物协同进化角度探讨植物次生物质的产生、防御和吸引策略与脊椎动物对果实的选择和消费之间的关系等。开展脊椎动物传播肉质果实中次生物质的研究,对完善种子传播机制、植物繁殖和更新格局,丰富动植物相互作用、协同进化理论具有重要的意义。  相似文献

After wheat, rice, maize, and barley, sorghum is the fifth most widely grown cereal on the planet. Due to its high production, drought resistance, and heat tolerance, this crop is replacing maize in some areas. Sorghum is available in a variety of colors, including cream, lemon-yellow, red, and even black. The principal grain anatomical components are pericarp, germ or embryo and endosperm. This review provides an overview of key sorghum grain components, including starches, fiber, proteins, lipids, and vitamins. Also, we summarized phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, carotenoids, vitamin E, amines, Policosanols and Phytosterols in sorghum grains. Sorghum is used to manufacture bread and porridge, and it provides a significant source of energy and nutrition for humans; sorghum is extensively farmed for animal feed. However, because the natural components in sorghum are useful in the development of healthy and functional foods, sorghum farming for both biofuel production and human consumption is gaining popularity. Pigmented sorghum grain is high in antioxidants such as polyphenols, primarily tannins, which have a variety of health benefits, including antiproliferative properties linked to the prevention of certain cancers, antioxidant activities linked to the prevention of diseases linked to oxidative stress, and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as improving glucose metabolism. Because these chemicals cannot be assimilated, their application in the food business has been limited, as sorghum is regarded as a lownutritional grain due to the presence of anti-nutritional components such as strong tannins, which form complexes with proteins and iron, limiting their digestibility. This review aims to show the utilization of sorghum as a source of bioactive chemicals and the value they bestow on human health due to the general biological potential it possesses.  相似文献

We designed seed storage proteins containing bioactive peptides based on their three-dimensional structures. Furthermore, to create crops with enhanced food qualities, we developed transgenic crops producing seed storage proteins with bioactive peptides. This strategy promises to prevent lifestyle-related diseases by simple daily food consumption. Legumes are members of the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae and include economically important grain legumes, oilseed crops, forage crops, shrubs, and tropical or subtropical trees. Legumes are a rich source of quality protein for humans and animals. They also enrich the soil by producing their own nitrogen in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. International centers and national institutes collect, maintain, distribute, and produce high-yielding legumes (grain-pulses, oilseeds, forages, nutraceuticals, medicinal shrubs, and trees). Legume breeders are confined within the primary gene pools (GP-1) in their varietal improvement programs and have not exploited secondary gene pools (GP-2), tertiary gene pools (GP-3), or quaternary gene pools (GP-4). Legumes are also an excellent source of timber, medicine, nutraceuticals, tannins, gums, insecticides, resins, varnish, paints, dyes, and eco-friendly by-products such as soy diesel. Three forage crops, Medicago truncatula, Lotus japonicus, and Trifolium pratense, are model legumes for phylogenetic studies and genome sequencing. This paper concludes that a "protein revolution" is needed to meet the protein demands of the world.  相似文献

In this review, the toxic and antinutrient compounds biosynthesized by legumes used as forage crops in the United States are described under the categories alkaloids, amino acids, cyanogens, isoflavone and coumestan estrogenic principles, nitro compounds, protease inhibitors, phytohemagglutinins, saponins, selenium compounds and tannins. The legume-related livestock conditions, bloat, locoweed poisoning and photodermatitis are also discussed. Relevant veterinary, phytochemical and toxicological literature citations are presented.  相似文献

The research focused on the changes of phenolic compounds as well as their antiradical activity and reducing power isolated from Amur grape (Vitis amurensis) seeds during germination under optimal conditions and under osmotic stress. The seeds were found to contain tannins, (+) catechin, (−) epicatechin, and gallic acid (in free, ester- and glycoside-bound forms). Extracts from the seeds were also shown to contain two other phenolic acids: caffeic and p-coumaric acids, in very low levels. During a 3-day seed germination test under osmotic stress (−0.5 MPa), the content of total phenolics, tannins and phenolic acids declined as compared to the control. However, seed germination under stress conditions led to a significant increase in the amount of catechins. Because catechin is the one of the units in condensed tannins, its dynamic increase during seed germination may be involved in metabolism of tannins under osmotic stress. It is also likely that the synthesis of catechins is greater under stress conditions and these compounds may be engaged in the process of acclimatization of grapevines to stress conditions. The content of total phenolic compounds in seed extracts is positively correlated with their antioxidant properties. The extracts from seeds germinated under optimal conditions exhibited strong antiradical properties against the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical as well as reducing power. As regards the extracts from grape seeds germinated under osmotic stress, this capability was much weaker. The research demonstrated that antioxidants could interfere with the oxidation process induced by various stresses by acting as oxygen scavengers, therefore the tolerance to drought stress might be correlated with an increase in the antioxidant potential.  相似文献

Grain legumes continue to occupy an important place in human nutrition as sources of protein, vitamins and minerals. From a nutritional point of view chickpea, pigeonpea, mung bean, urd bean, cowpea, lentil, soybean and peanut are the important grain legumes for the millions of people in semi-arid and tropical regions of many Asian and African countries. These legumes are used in various food forms after suitable processing depending on the regions of their production and consumption. Such aspects as production and consumption, processing and food uses, chemical composition, and effects of processing on the nutritive value of these legumes are the important topics of this paper. To enhance their utilization, new potential and diversified food uses have been highlighted. We studied the alterations in phenolic compounds in grape seeds during their stratification and germination under optimal conditions (+25 °C) and at low temperature (+10 °C). Biological materials in the study were seeds of Vitis riparia. Phenolic compounds were extracted from defatted seeds using 80 % methanol or 80 % acetone. The content of total phenolics was determined with the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, while the content of tannins was determined by vanillin assay and the protein (BSA) precipitation method. The RP-HPLC method was used to determine phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, catechins) in the extracts. High amounts of tannins, catechins, gallic acid and lesser amounts of p-coumaric acid were found in the seeds. The content of total phenolics in acetone extracts was higher than that obtained using methanol. The amounts of phenolic acids and tannins found in V. riparia seeds after stratification were much lower. It may confirm a possible role of these compounds in dormancy of V. riparia seeds. After 72 h of low temperature treatment, inhibition of grape root growth and biochemical changes in seeds were detected. The chilling stimulated increased accumulation of some phenolic compounds (free gallic acid and catechins) in the seeds. These substances can protect plants against some abiotic stressors.  相似文献

The basic characteristics of thiamine metabolism in germinating seeds of maize (Zea mays), oat (Avena sativa), faba bean (Vicia faba) and garden pea (Pisum sativum) are presented with a special emphasis of a possible thiamine storage function of seed thiamine-binding proteins (TBPs). Seeds were germinated for 6 d in the dark. Thiamine-binding activity in seeds decreased during germination by 50% in cereals and by 30% in legumes. The degradation of TBPs was also detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The total thiamine content decreased rapidly to 20-40% of the initial value in cereal seeds during first 3 d of germination while in legume seeds thiamine content started changing from the fourth day and dropped by 50% at the sixth day. A composite pattern was found for the changes in thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) contribution to total thiamine during seed germination. A peak of the coenzyme percentage was usually detected at the second day of germination. Another gain of TPP was often seen toward the sixth day of germination. The activity of thiamine pyrophosphokinase (EC 2.7.6.2) was high in resting legume seeds and did not significantly change during germination. In contrast, the low activity of this thiamine-activating enzyme in cereal seeds progressively increased during germination. Thiamine phosphate synthase (EC 2.5.1.3) was also detected in seeds and was shown to contribute significantly to the balance of thiamine compounds during seed germination.  相似文献

In addition to a multifactorial etiology of nutritional, social and environmental stressors, post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in pigs is often related to infection with specific pathogens such as enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). In swine farming operations, the incidence of PWD is a global concern and is associated with an unbalanced gut status, resulting in poor performance and high antimicrobial consumption via prophylaxis and metaphylaxis. Increases in antimicrobial resistance are reinforcing an already-urgent need for sustainable, alternative solutions for maintaining optimal gut health in livestock. Tannin-rich plants and extracts contain bioactive compounds that could be of great interest in this respect. This review describes how the use of tannins around weaning could be beneficial for pigs, with special emphasis on the reduction of ETEC-related PWD. An overview of the broad chemical diversity of tannins is presented together with their physicochemical and biological properties, as well as how they may be metabolized in the digestive tract. The pharmacological effects exerted by tannins are summarized; more precisely, the possible mechanisms by which tannins can disrupt the different steps of the pathogenesis of ETEC-related PWD are highlighted. The factors affecting the bioactivity of tannins are also discussed, shedding light on the importance of chemical structure among different tannins.  相似文献

Legume seeds such as common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are of major importance for human nutrition in the Mediterranean region, owing to their high protein and iron contents. Iron deficiency is a major agricultural issue limiting crop yields, especially on calcareous soils which represent more than 30% of the world’s land surface. In the present study, we compared the effect of iron deficiency on the yield and the seed quality of two common bean cultivars, contrasting in their tolerance ability to iron deficiency. Seedlings were inoculated with an efficient strain of Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899 and were grown on either non-calcareous or calcareous soil. Seed and pod numbers, seed weight and quality were evaluated. On the calcareous soil, iron deficiency decreased the plant yield, reduced the weight and the number of seeds and impaired the seed quality as expressed by seed mineral composition, protein and soluble sugar contents. The tolerant cultivar, Flamingo, grew better and produced seeds with higher protein and mineral contents than the sensitive cultivar, Coco blanc.  相似文献

Grain legumes such as pea (Pisum sativum L.) are highly valued as a staple source of protein for human and animal nutrition. However, their seeds often contain limited amounts of high-quality, sulfur (S) rich proteins, caused by a shortage of the S-amino acids cysteine and methionine. It was hypothesized that legume seed quality is directly linked to the amount of organic S transported from leaves to seeds, and imported into the growing embryo. We expressed a high-affinity yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) methionine/cysteine transporter (Methionine UPtake 1) in both the pea leaf phloem and seed cotyledons and found source-to-sink transport of methionine but not cysteine increased. Changes in methionine phloem loading triggered improvements in S uptake and assimilation and long-distance transport of the S compounds, S-methylmethionine and glutathione. In addition, nitrogen and carbon assimilation and source-to-sink allocation were upregulated, together resulting in increased plant biomass and seed yield. Further, methionine and amino acid delivery to individual seeds and uptake by the cotyledons improved, leading to increased accumulation of storage proteins by up to 23%, due to both higher levels of S-poor and, most importantly, S-rich proteins. Sulfate delivery to the embryo and S assimilation in the cotyledons were also upregulated, further contributing to the improved S-rich storage protein pools and seed quality. Overall, this work demonstrates that methionine transporter function in source and sink tissues presents a bottleneck in S allocation to seeds and that its targeted manipulation is essential for overcoming limitations in the accumulation of high-quality seed storage proteins.

Variability of secondary metabolites in edible (peel and pulp) and inedible (seeds) parts of three pitanga varieties, red, red-orange and purple, was investigated during the maturation process. Hydrolysable tannins, anthocyanins, and flavonoids were quantified by HPLC/DAD and carotenoids by absorbance. Peel/pulp showed greater complexity of constituents (carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and hydrolysable tannins), while only tannins were identified in seeds, but in quantities of 10 to 100 times greater. The red-orange variety showed the highest levels of phenolic compounds in seeds and peel/pulp, except anthocyanins. The analysis of the principal response curves showed that the pitanga biotype has greater influence on metabolite variation than ripening stages. During peel/pulp maturation, a reduction in the levels of flavonoids and tannins contrasted with an increase in carotenoids and cyanidin-3-O-glucoside in all varieties, whereas in the seeds oenothein B, the major tannin, increased up to 1.32 g/100 g fresh weight. Such marked differences between fruit parts demonstrate that the seeds in stages E3 and E4 are a source of hydrolysable tannins, compounds known for their antitumor activity, while peel/pulp of all varieties in the ripe stage provide natural antioxidants, such as carotenoids and flavonoids. Lastly, the purple biotype can be a rich source of the cyanidin-3-O-glucoside pigment a potent bioactive compound.  相似文献

种子贮藏是啮齿动物利用食物资源的一种适应性行为。同域分布的啮齿动物可能进化出不同的贮藏方式和策略。为了解同域分布的啮齿动物的贮藏策略及种子特征在动物贮藏行为决策中的作用,于2014年10-12月,通过半自然围栏实验,在秦岭南坡的佛坪国家级自然保护区内调查了同域分布社鼠、中华姬鼠和甘肃仓鼠对板栗和锐齿槲栎种子的贮藏策略差异,并探讨了2种种子特征在鼠类贮藏行为决策中的作用。结果显示:1)社鼠主要集中贮藏板栗种子,未分散贮藏任何种子;中华姬鼠未贮藏板栗种子,对锐齿槲栎种子同时表现出集中和分散贮藏行为,以集中贮藏为主;甘肃仓鼠对2种种子均表现出集中贮藏行为,未表现分散贮藏行为。2)社鼠和甘肃仓鼠均倾向于集中贮藏有较高营养价值(高蛋白和脂肪)且单宁含量较低的板栗种子;中华姬鼠倾向于分散贮藏单宁含量高的锐齿槲栎种子。3)3种鼠均喜好取食有较高营养价值且单宁含量低的板栗种子,很少取食单宁含量高的锐齿槲栎种子。结果表明同域分布鼠类对不同种子的贮藏方式有所不同,种子特征影响鼠类的取食和贮藏策略。  相似文献

In the recent years, the exploration of bioactive phytochemicals as natural feed additives has been of great interest among nutritionists and rumen microbiologists to modify the rumen fermentation favorably such as defaunation, inhibition of methanogenesis, improvement in protein metabolism, and increasing conjugated linoleic acid content in ruminant derived foods. Many phytochemicals such as saponins, essential oils, tannins and flavonoids from a wide range of plants have been identified, which have potential values for rumen manipulation and enhancing animal productivity as alternatives to chemical feed additives. However, their effectiveness in ruminant production has not been proved to be consistent and conclusive. This review discusses the effects of phytochemicals such as saponins, tannins and essential oils on the rumen microbial populations, i.e., bacteria, protozoa, fungi and archaea with highlighting molecular diversity of microbial community in the rumen. There are contrasting reports of the effects of these phytoadditives on the rumen fermentation and rumen microbes probably depending upon the interactions among the chemical structures and levels of phytochemicals used, nutrient composition of diets and microbial components in the rumen. The study of chemical structure–activity relationships is required to exploit the phytochemicals for obtaining target responses without adversely affecting beneficial microbial populations. A greater understanding of the modulatory effects of phytochemicals on the rumen microbial populations together with fermentation will allow a better management of the rumen ecosystem and a practical application of this feed additive technology in livestock production.  相似文献

The influence of optimal and contrasting temperatures on the fractional composition of proteins and respiration of germinating seeds of Gmelin larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) and Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) was revealed. The dominance of globulins (salt-soluble fraction) and insoluble proteins was noted in viable air-dry seeds of larch. Optimal and contrasting temperatures of germination of seeds caused significant changes in the content and dynamics of separate fractions of protein, the contrasting temperatures causing greater changes: increasing in the content of insoluble proteins, intense consumption of globulins at separate stages of germination. Respiration of the seeds during germination at contrasting temperatures also increased more than at an optimal temperature. Thermal regime of germination affected the character of relations between the respiration rate and contents of different protein fractions.  相似文献
