The physiological responses of well-nourished rats to primary infection with the intestinal nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis were examined. Infected rats fed ad libitum were compared with uninfected control rats fed ad lib. and with uninfected rats which were pair-fed to the infected rats. Following infection with N. brasiliensis rat food intake was reduced from day 2 post infection (pi) and there were two periods of minimal food intake (days 2 to 3 and 8 to 9 pi). The water intake of infected rats was only reduced on days 2, 3 and 9 pi and not to the same extent as food intake. Muscle catabolism in infected rats was more severe than could be explained on the basis of their food intake reduction. The rectal temperature and rate of oxygen consumption per g body-weight of rats was not significantly altered by the infection. Host responses to N. brasiliensis are compared with those seen in microbial infections and some of them are found to be considerably different.  相似文献

Copper (0.21 mgl−1) caused a decrease in whole body oxygen consumption in bluegills exposed for 32 days, but no changes occurred during days 3, 4 or 9 of copper exposure. In vitro oxygen consumption of gill and brain, were not significantly altered, whereas liver Q O2, was slightly elevated which suggests that copper is acting to decrease oxygen consumption of the whole animal at a higher level of integration than these individual tissues. In fish subjected to an increase in temperature as well as sublethal copper exposure, whole body oxygen consumption was higher than controls 5 days after the temperature was increased, indicating a delay in temperature acclimation in the copper exposed fish. This difference was reflected in higher in vitro oxygen consumption in the liver and gill of these fish suggesting the metal was delaying the process of temperature acclimation by at least in part acting directly on the tissues.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess whether bacterial infection stimulates oxygen consumption and brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity. Guinea pigs infected with Legionella pneumophila showed marked fever and a significant (33%) increase in resting oxygen consumption (VO2), 24h after infection. At this time, food intake and body weight were normal and the in vitro thermogenic activity of BAT taken from infected animals was elevated by 64% above that of control guinea pigs. VO2 and BAT activity fell to control values by 48h as infected animals became moribund and over this period food intake was markedly reduced.  相似文献

Aerobic performance is affected by numerous endogenous and exogenous factors. We investigated the effects of ambient temperature and parasite infection on resting metabolism and maximal exercise-induced oxygen consumption in wild-derived house mice (Mus musculus). We also collected preliminary data for effects of lactation on these measures of aerobic performance. Mice were experimentally infected with a naturally occurring intestinal nematode (Heligmosomoides polygyrus) and then exposed to cold temperatures for 10 d or allowed to mate and reproduce. Wild-derived house mice did not change their resting metabolism with H. polygyrus infection or cold exposure, which is in stark contrast to similar studies with laboratory mice. Preliminary data also showed no effect of lactation on aerobic performance. Similarly, maximal exercise-induced oxygen consumption and hematocrit and hemoglobin were unaffected by all experimental treatments. We conclude that resting metabolism, maximal oxygen consumption, and hematology of wild-derived house mice are unaffected by exogenous (temperature) and endogenous (H. polygyrus) demands and, therefore, wild-derived mice respond to these demands without incurring potential costs associated with changes in aerobic performance.  相似文献

The effects ofE. coli endotoxin 0127 B8 on oxygen consumption, temperature, and on the activity of the proton conductance pathway in brown adipose tissue (BAT) were investigated in rats and mice. In rats an increase was observed in rectal and skin temperature, whole body oxygen consumption and GDP binding in BAT. In mice only the rise in rectal and skin temperature were significantly changed by endotoxin administration. These findings suggest that in some species BAT is involved in the production of endotoxin induced fever and increased energy expenditure.  相似文献

The photosynthetic changes evaluated by oxygen evolution, chlorophyll fluorescence, photoacoustics, and delayed fluorescence (DF) were studied in leaves of grown in vitro for 8 weeks grapevine plants (Vitis vinifera) infected by grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3). The infected leaves were characterized during the viral infection without visible disease symptoms. The symptomless infection led to a decrease in plant biomass. The non-photochemical fluorescence quenching, qN, declined, whereas the photochemical quenching, qP, and the Chl a/b ratio were not significantly affected. Photoacoustic and oxygen evolution measurements showed that the energy storage and oxygen evolution rate decreased in the infected leaves. Enhanced alternative electron sinks during the symptomless viral infection were also estimated. The changes in fluorescence and DF temperature curves demonstrated an enhanced stability of the thylakoid membranes in the infected leaves. This effect was clearly expressed at high actinic light intensities. The viral infected in vitro grown grapevine plants were used in the present study as a simplified model system that allow to avoid the involvement of different environmental factors that could interfere with the GLRaV infection and the virus-grapevine interactions. Thus, the 'pure' impact of the viral infection on photosynthesis could be investigated.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption by eggs of European pond turtle was determined at two constant incubation temperatures of 25 and 28°C during the second half of embryogenesis. During development at both temperatures, the rate of oxygen consumption initially increased to remain constant during the last quarter of embryogenesis. The difference between the rates of oxygen consumption at these temperatures decreased during the studied period. The coefficient Q10 for the rate of oxygen consumption decreased from 9 to 1.7. At an incubation temperature of 28°C, the changes in the rate of oxygen consumption in response to a short-term temperature decrease to 25°C or increase to 30°C depended on the developmental stage and were most pronounced at the beginning of the studied period. During late embryonic and first 2.5 months of postembryonic development, the rate of oxygen consumption did not significantly differ after such temperature changes. The regulatory mechanisms formed during embryonic development are proposed to maintain the level of oxygen consumption during temperature changes.  相似文献

The mammalian response to hypothermia is increased metabolic heat production, usually by way of muscular activity, such as shivering. Seals, however, have been reported to respond to diving with hypothermia, which in other mammals under other circumstances would have elicited vigorous shivering. In the diving situation, shivering could be counterproductive, because it obviously would increase oxygen consumption and therefore reduce diving capacity. We have measured the electromyographic (EMG) activity of three different muscles and the rectal and brain temperature of hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) while they were exposed to low ambient temperatures in a climatic chamber and while they performed a series of experimental dives in cold water. In air, the seals had a normal mammalian shivering response to cold. Muscles were recruited in a sequential manner until body temperature stopped dropping. Shivering was initiated when rectal temperature fell below 35.3 +/- 0.6 degrees C (n = 6). In the hypothermic diving seal, however, the EMG activity in all of the muscles that had been shivering vigorously before submergence was much reduced, or stopped altogether, whereas it increased again upon emergence but was again reduced if diving was repeated. We conclude that shivering is inhibited during diving to allow a decrease in body temperature whereby oxygen consumption is decreased and diving capacity is extended.  相似文献

Resting subjects were immersed for 30 min in water at 22 and 30 degrees C after drinking alcohol. Total ventilation, end-tidal PCO2, rectal temperature, aural temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, and oxygen consumption were recorded during the experiments. Blood samples taken before the immersion period were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. The mean blood alcohol levels were 82.50 +/- 9.93 mg.(100 ml)-1 and 100.6 +/- 12.64 mg (100 ml)-1 for the immersions at 22 and 30 degrees C, respectively. There was no significant change in body temperature measured aurally or rectally, mean surface skin temperature, or heart rate at either water temperature tested. Total expired ventilation was significantly attenuated for the last 15 min of the immersion at 22 degrees C, after alcohol consumption as compared to the ventilation change in water at 22 degrees C without ethanol. This response was not consistently significantly altered during immersion in water at 30 degrees C. It is evident that during a 30-min immersion in tepid water with a high blood alcohol level, body heat loss is not affected but some changes in ventilation do occur.  相似文献

The exposure of Wistar male rats (200±20 g) to high ambient temperature (38°C) for 20 and 60 min induced an equal decrease in hypothalamic, brain stem and hippocampal monoamine oxidase activity when compared to controls. The interscapular brown adipose tissue monoamine oxidase activity, as well as oxygen consumption and rectal temperature were increased only after a 60 min heat exposure. The adrenal function, assessed by dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity and cholesterol concentration, was enhanced both after 20 and 60 min. In conclusion, heat induced the increase in adrenal function and interscapular brown adipose tissue monoamine oxidase activity, but the decrease in that of the brain.  相似文献

Increased energy expenditure often occurs during illness or after injection of endotoxin and can contribute to the generation of fever. In laboratory rats and mice the thermogenic response has been attributed to the sympathetic activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT), although mice often fail to show pyrexia. In this study the effects of malaria on O2 consumption and BAT were studied in mice inoculated with Plasmodium berghei. Parasitemia was maximal (greater than 50% of erythrocytes showing positive Leishman staining) 72 h after inoculation. Up to this time body weight and food intake were similar to values for control mice, although colonic temperatures were slightly depressed in infected mice. Thereafter, infected mice showed marked hypophagia, loss of body weight, and severe hypothermia; colonic temperature was less than 31 degrees C at 96 h when the experiment was terminated. Resting O2 consumption (VO2) measured at 24 degrees C was slightly elevated in infected mice 12 h after inoculation and reached a peak value (31% above controls) at 48 h. VO2 returned to the same value as controls at 96 h. In vitro thermogenic activity of BAT (assessed from binding of guanosine diphosphate to isolated mitochondria) was not significantly altered in infected mice. These data demonstrate a marked thermogenic response to malarial infection, but this is not accompanied by fever in mice and is dissociated from stimulation of BAT activity.  相似文献

This study aimed to estimate reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, antioxidants activity, and biomarkers level of oxidative damage to protein and DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of C57BL/6 mice infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The mean ROS concentration in the CSF of infected mice increased gradually, and the increase in ROS in CSF became statistical significance at days 12-30 post-infection compared to that before infection (< 0.001), and then ROS returned to normal level at day 45 after infection. In parallel with the increase in ROS in the CSF, infected mice showed similar of changes in reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) as that in ROS in the CSF. GSH, GR, GPx, and GST in the CSF of infected mice were all significantly higher than they were before infection during days 12-30 post-infection. However, protein carbonyl content and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, biomarkers of oxidative damage to protein and DNA, respectively, were also significantly higher in the CSF of infected mice during this period. These results suggest that oxidative stress occur in the cells of central nervous system of mice infected with A. cantonensis during days 12-30 after infection due to ROS overproduction in CSF despite the increase in antioxidants during this period.  相似文献

1. Oxygen consumption and rectal temperature of warm and cold acclimated rats were measured after chronic and acute injections of saline or benzodiazepine (diazepam). 2. Benzodiazepine has blocked the increase in oxygen consumption of warm acclimated rats on exposure to cold. 3. After cold acclimation, the benzodiazepine did not affect the increase in oxygen consumption. 4. Benzodiazepine caused a slight hypothermia when injected chronically, but did not affect rectal temperature over a short period of time.  相似文献

Thirty-six West African Dwarf (WAD) goats were used to assess the effects of an experimental Trypanosoma congolense infection on their reproductive system. Estrous cycles were synchronised and when confirmed pregnant (n = 31), the does were randomly allocated into control and trypanosome-infected groups. After infection, the animals were carefully observed till parturition. Trypanosome infection caused an increase of rectal temperature, a significant drop in PCV (infected: 23.3 +/- 0.3%; control: 28.5 +/- 0.4%; P < 0.0001) and abortions in 27.8% of the infected does. Kids born from infected does had a lower birth weight than kids born from control goats (0.9 +/- 0.1 kg versus 1.6 +/- 0.1 kg; P < 0.0001). Eight out of 13 kids (61.5%) that were born alive from infected does died during their first week of life. Plasma pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) and progesterone concentrations were lower in the infected animals than in the controls. In general, PAG concentration in does which aborted dropped before abortion. Our results revealed that artificial T. congolense infection affected reproductive performance of WAD goats with abortions, premature births and perinatal losses being observed. Neither transplacental transmission of T. congolense nor histopathological lesions of the placenta could be demonstrated.  相似文献

Routine and post-exercise metabolic rates were measured for juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis infected with the microsporidium gill parasite Loma salmonae under laboratory conditions. Rainbow trout increased routine and post-exercise metabolic rate in response to infection compared with controls. Brook trout, on the other hand, lowered routine metabolic rate without effecting post-exercise metabolic rate compared to controls. The result of these 2 different strategies may either reflect defense of metabolic scope or a difference in the rate of recovery of the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption between the 2 species in response to the same infection.  相似文献

This study investigates the mechanisms involved in adjusting metabolic rate in response to acute changes in ambient temperature close to thermoneutrality during postnatal development. Twelve lambs were prepared for sequential studies at 4, 14, 30, 45 and 55 days of age. During each study they were maintained at ambient temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C for at least 1 h and until a slow wave sleep epoch was established. Eight lambs completed all studies. In these there was a significant fall in oxygen consumption with age which was independent of ambient temperature. This effect was closely related to a decrease in plasma triiodothyronine concentration that was greatest between 4- and 14-days old lambs and was not associated with a change in the plasma concentration of thyrotrophin or thyroxine. In 4-days old lambs oxygen consumption was increased at ambient temperatures of 5 and 10 degrees C by non-shivering thermogenesis, whilst in 14- and 30-days old lambs this effect was achieved by shivering. On the basis of significant changes in oxygen consumption and/or the occurrence of shivering (lower critical temperature) and panting (upper critical temperature) we have shown that there is a fall in both upper and lower critical temperature with age and a widening of the thermoneutral zone. This was associated with a decrease in the plasma cortisol concentration and heart rate as measured at thermoneutrality, whilst rectal temperature increased from 4 to 30 days of age. The other 4 lambs, 3 of which died between 7 and 17 days of age, had low plasma triiodothyronine concentrations when studied at 4 and/or 14 days of age and their oxygen consumption at thermoneutrality was significantly lower than the normal group at 14 days. Shivering thermogenesis occurred at an earlier age and control of body temperature was less effective. It is concluded that triiodothyronine has an important role in the control of metabolic rate in the developing lamb even to meet modest changes in ambient temperature, and possibly directly in survival.  相似文献

Eight healthy and physically well-trained male students exercised on a treadmill for 60 min while being immersed in water to the middle of the chest in a laboratory flowmill. The water velocity was adjusted so that the intensity of exercise correspond to 50% maximal oxygen uptake of each subject, and experiments were performed once at each of three water temperatures: 25, 30, 35°C, following a 30-min control period in air at 25°C, and on a treadmill in air at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Thermal states during rest and exercise were determined by measuring rectal and skin temperatures at various points, and mean skin temperatures were calculated. The intensity of exercise was monitored by measuring oxygen consumption, and heart rate was monitored as an indicator for cardiovascular function. At each water temperature, identical oxygen consumption levels were attained during exercise, indicating that no extra heat was produced by shivering at the lowest water temperature. The slight rise in rectal temperature during exercise was not influenced by the water temperature. The temperatures of skin exposed to air rose slightly during exercise at 25°C and 30°C water temperature and markedly at 35°C. The loss of body mass increased with water temperature indicating that both skin blood flow and sweating during exercise increased with the rise in water temperature. The rise in body temperature provided the thermoregulatory drive for the loss of the heat generated during exercise. Heart rate increased most during exercise in water at 35°C, most likely due to enhanced requirements for skin blood flow. Although such requirements were certainly smallest at 25°C water temperature, heart rate at this temperature was slightly higher than at 30°C suggesting reflex activation of sympathetic control by cold signals from the skin. There was a significantly greater increase in mean skin and rectal temperatures in subjects exercising on the treadmill in air, compared to those exercising in water at 25°C. Estimation of the standard metabolic rate (SMR), maximal oxygen consumption (MOC) and thermoregulation ability in males of red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, 1779) have shown that individuals infected with nematodes Heligmosomum mixtum, regardless of intensity of worm infection, had an increased level of oxygen consumption in the cold exposition, while the individuals infected with the cestodes Arostrilepis horrida, had a lover oxygen consumption than non-invaded individuals. Worm burden of A. horrida correlated negatively with MOC value in the hosts. Thermo-conductance of individuals infected with A. horrida was significantly lower than in ones infected with H. mixtum. Opposite effects of these two helminthes seems to be determined by the specificity of pathogenesis and different body mass of parasites. Total body mass of nematodes are usually less than 0.2% of the host body mass whereas the total body mass of cestodes may exceed 5% of the host body mass.  相似文献

The dog is the final host for sarcosporidia cysts from the oesophagus and diaphragm of donkeys from Sardinia. The prepatent period lasted 9 to 10 days. Sporocysts measured 12.2-13.8 X 9.2-9.9 microns. Infection of a horse with 10(5) donkey/dog sporocysts increased the rectal temperature to more than 40 degrees C on days 10 and 20 after infection. On day 138 p.i. predominantly immature cysts containing metrocytes were found, especially in the oesophagus. Infection on day 117 p.i. with 2 X 10(5) horse/dog sporocysts did not give rise to a temperature increase during the following 21 days. The final host of sarcosporidia cysts from the oesophagus and diaphragm of horses from Sardinia is the dog. The prepatent period lasted 9-10 days. Sporocysts measured 12.2-13.8 X 9.2-9.9 microns. The rise in the rectal temperature of three foals infected with horse/dog sporocysts did not differ from that of the foal infected with donkey/dog sporocysts. In both cases rectal temperature increased to more than 40 degrees C on days 10 and 20 following infection with 10(5) sporocysts. Because of the occurrence of two temperature peaks following infection, two generations of schizogony are postulated. The presence of a sarcosporidia species occurring in the donkey only is doubtful.  相似文献

Changes in oxygen consumption, body temperature and energy metabolism were studied while mice were repeatedly exposed to a sealed environment. The average tolerance limits of environmental oxygen level (vol%) and the average oxygen consumption rates (ml/g.min) were exponentially decreased and the average body rectal temperatures (°C) were linearly declined while the average tolerable times (min) to hypoxia were linearly increased as animals were repeatedly exposed to hypoxia for 5 runs. The average survival times (min) in sealed environments after administration of normal saline, iodoacetic acid, malonic acid, potassium cyanide, and potassium cyanide plus iodoacetic acid in group exposed repeatedly to hypoxia for three runs were, respectively, 3.1, 3.9, 1.4, 2.6, and 2.8 times those of the control groups that had corresponding administration of the different chemicals, but no exposure to hypoxia. The results indicate that progressive increase in hypoxia tolerance is related to progressively lower rate of oxygen consumption and heat production, and the lowered energy requirement during repetitive exposure to hypoxia is achieved mainly via pathways of the respiratory chain and glycolysis.  相似文献
